Freeform gives ‘Party of Five’ a fresh beginning Any earlier fan of “Party of Five” will find a familiar feel to the reboot, but with a decidedly contemporary and multicultural twist. The original Golden Globe and Humanitas Prize-winning drama series about five orphaned siblings aired on Fox from 1994 to 2000, and creators and executive producers Amy Lippman and Christopher Keyser are back for the new Freeform version that premieres Wednesday, Jan. 8. Though the younger characters still get separated from their parents, the mother and father aren’t deceased (played by Fernanda Urrejola and Bruno Bichir): They’re deported back to Mexico, still leaving the children to fend for themselves. Brandon Larracuente, Emily Tosta, Niko Guardado and Elle Paris Legaspi play the elder four of the five youngsters – now with the last

name Acosta instead of the first incarnation’s Salinger. “Chris and I had lots of opportunities over the years to sort of revisit the story,” Lippman says, “and I think we waited until there was good reason to do it. As we began to see stories like this on the front page of every newspaper, we began to realize that what we had sort of imagined – which was a family of orphans 25 years ago – had sort of transmogrified into families of kids who are living without their parents. “Rather than just do a reboot,” adds Lippman, “this is a story that leaves the ‘Party of Five’ characters in a similar kind of situation, and it has the advantage of two things: One, it’s real. It’s happening every day. And one of the things that sort of excites us about doing the show now is that the parents are a factor in it. They are
dealing with issues of, ‘How do we try to parent our kids from a distance? How do the kids deal with social services?’ It’s our intention to make it different, but I think there is enough for our fans of long ago to see echoes of the original series.” Keyser notes, “This was a show about grief, and this (new) show is about grief in a slightly different way, because what is lost is not gone forever. It’s somewhere just outside your reach. The other thing that ‘Party of Five’ was about was what it means for a group of kids who, at the point in their lives, ought to be thinking about themselves ... but end up having to think about each other and the way families work. It’s different because we’re 25 years later, and because they come from a different culture and their approach how to do those things may vary, the way families work. Although, in many ways, families are the same across all cultures.”

Disney serves up another “Frozen” treat If anything was a sure bet going into the holiday movie season, it was “Frozen II.” The original animated movie was that sort of serendipity any studio wishes for ... even Disney, which doesn’t always have its expectations met. The company wanted to make sure its best foot was put forward on a “Frozen” sequel, which is why it took six years. The care shows in the storytelling, so this isn’t just a money grab – though Disney is very happily grabbing a lot of money from it. Voiced again by Idina Menzel, Elsa has turned to her kingdom (or make that queendom) after getting her power to freeze under control. She’s still haunted by elements of her past, though, and she believes she might be able to change the fates of some of her ancestors by following the trail. Thus, she and her sister Anna (again sporting Kristen Bell’s voice) set off on their new quest.

Of course, snowman Olaf also is along, with Josh Gad’s vocals giving him the now-expected dose of attitude. In fact, the entire voice cast is well-chosen, with fellow Broadway veterans Jonathan Groff and Santino Fontana also back, and “This Is Us” Emmy winner Sterling K. Brown making a significant contribution in a new role. There’s no “Let It Go” on the soundtrack this time, though that tune does get a reprise, but the new songs are appropriate and catchy enough. A second act for a movie franchise always is dicey, since history bears out that so few sequels live up to (and, indeed, don’t diminish) the original. It was particularly critical for Disney to ensure that didn’t happen with “Frozen II,” and not only for the financial health of that project itself. Its arrival in theaters roughly coincided with the launch of the streaming

Such a massive legion of fans was waiting for “Frozen II,” its makers knew there was no other option but to get it right. They have, and now, the wait is on for “Frozen III” ... and that is a movie that you just know will happen.
