Maggie Lawson and Jason Biggs find themselves ‘Outmatched’ BY JAY BOBBIN
Many parents hope their children will be smarter than them, and a new sitcom runs with that notion. Premiering Thursday, Jan. 23, Fox’s “Outmatched” teams Maggie Lawson (“Psych”) and Jason Biggs (“American Pie”) as an Atlantic City, N.J., couple whose four offspring include three literal geniuses. Fox-series alums Connor Kalopsis (“The Grinder”) and Jack Stanton (“The Mick”) play two of them, who excel at math and music respectively; the third, played by Ashley Boettcher, is a language expert. And the fourth kid (Oakley Bull) is relatively ordinary, a relief to her mom and dad. Tisha Campbell (“Martin”) also stars. Series creator-producer Lon Zimmet developed “LA to Vegas” for Fox, and his work on that show helped draw Lawson – returning to Fox herself after her run on “Lethal Weapon” – to
“Outmatched.” The friendly actress says, “This is one of the first scripts I read during the last pilot season, and I was immediately like, ‘I want to do this one.’ I thought it was such a funny idea. And I read the ‘LA to Vegas’ pilot years ago, and I loved that script, so I knew this was going to be good.” Since her character Cay also is a casino pit boss, Lawson is having fun with a type of role she rarely plays ... “very tough,” she maintains. “I usually tend to be a little more genteel, and this is not that. Jason is kind of the heart and sweetness of the show, and I’m almost bullying at times. I was excited to be seen for something like this, to show another side.” “Outmatched” also is “a little bit of art imitating life,” reasons Lawson: “This generation of kids doesn’t know life without the Internet and the iPhone, and the show is called ‘Outmatched’ for a reason. We have kids who are so smart, they
are outsmarting us (older people) all the time. That’s how it is on the set, too. The kids will be talking about something and I’ll say, ‘Wait. What? What did you say? I don’t even know what that means.’ These kids not only play smart in the show, they’re incredibly smart. And professional. And good. I’m not going to lie, it’s kind of intimidating.” Also to be seen in the second “Psych” movie sequel when the streaming service Peacock launches later this year, Lawson continues her dedication to the nonprofit Tiger Frances Foundation, which she co-founded to match animals and youths in mutual need of care. “We’re working on a few different things that are really exciting, both in and outside of L.A.,” she reports. “We’re trying to expand the program, and finding a lot of positive feedback and help with that.”

Judi Dench’s Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN
“Victoria and Abdul” (2017): Twenty years after playing the part on screen, Dench (in one of
her several collaborations with director Stephen Frears) took on the role of Queen Victoria again in this tale of the royal’s close friendship with a servant.
“Philomena” (2013): This
fact-inspired comedy-drama featured a superb Dench as a woman seeking the son she gave up for adoption almost a half-century earlier.
“Skyfall” (2012): Though Dench
always acquitted herself well in her run as boss M in the James Bond movies,
she was the particular focus of this entry ... with the added pleasure of watching her in the company of fellow acting great Albert Finney in the story’s home stretch.
“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” (2011): Dench was part of a first-rate ensemble cast also including Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and Tom Wilkinson in this tale of British residents of a retirement hotel in India.
“Notes on a Scandal” (2006): A frighteningly excellent Dench plays a lonely teacher whose connection
to a new faculty member (Cate Blanchett) takes some intense turns.
“Mrs. Henderson Presents” (2005): Played by
MOVIE REVIEW
Dench, a British socialite who gave a theater somewhat scandalous revival is the subject of this biography.
“Iris” (2001): Dench and Kate
Winslet split (at different ages for the
character) the true-life role of Dame Iris Murdoch, a novelist with an indomitable spirit.
“Chocolat” (2000): Dench is
magical as a landlady who falls under the spell of the remarkable chocolates made by one of her tenants (Juliette Binoche).
“Shakespeare in Love” (1998): Switching to playing another
British ruler brought Dench an Academy Award as Queen Elizabeth I here.
“Mrs. Brown” (1997): Dench
had her first screen turn as Queen
Victoria – and earned her first Oscar nomination – by playing the monarch as a recent widow.

‘Cats’ finally claws its way to the screen The stage has long been a source of movie material, but should certain shows just stay on the stage? Certain projects call attention to that question, and after a very long journey to celluloid, “Cats” is one of them. At a safe distance in a live-performance theater, the show is utterly captivating as limber performers embody felines without camera closeups adding the concern of the actors truly looking like authentic cats. Director Tom Hooper faces that challenge in translating the show to the screen, and the fact that he’s only partially successful is a big albatross that the movie has to wear. Yes, there’s a certain kick initially in seeing such familiar talents as Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, Idris Elba, Judi Dench, Rebel Wilson, James Corden and Ian McKellen looking like cats .... but before long, the gimmick starts to wear thin, even souped up by modern movie technology.
Shoney’s World Famous
BREAKFAST BAR
With that said, technology went only so far for “Cats” early on: In a hugely unusual move, Universal Pictures called back initially released copies of the film to substitute ones with reengineered. Presumably, that will be the version seen via all avenues going forward, including home video; however, it also suggests that even with as long as it took “Cats” to reach the screen,
the picture still wasn’t quite ready when the time for its debut came. The story, such as it is, involves the felines trying to earn the chance to ascend to cat heaven and be reborn (you know, cats having nine lives and all that). Elba’s sinister character Macavity wants to remove all of his rivals for that opportunity – among them, former beauty

Grizabella, whose aging leads to the standout song “Memory” being rendered with the expected power by Hudson. And Swift performs an original tune, clearly with the intent of being an extra lure for her fan base. With its Andrew Lloyd Webber and T.S. Eliot background and its impressive cast, chosen to hold some appeal for just about every segment of the audience imaginable, it’s easy to see where the movie version of “Cats” looked good on paper. How much you like it ultimately will depend on how much you want to like it, but if you walk into it cold without any concept of what you’re about to see, it’s no stretch to predict that “Cats” may well kill your curiosity. In film form, anyway.

“ZOMBIELAND: DOUBLE TAP”
BY JAY BOBBIN
This 10-years-later sequel has a definite feel of “been there, done that” – not only thanks to its own forerunner, but also to numerous other tales of survivors fighting the undead – but there’s fun in seeing such A-list stars as Oscar winner Emma Stone and Jesse Eisenberg being willing to return to the genre. Along with fellow returnees Woody Harrelson and Abigail Breslin, their characters’ situation remains just what it was; they’re certainly more experienced in vanquishing zombies, but they’re still crossing a ravaged America after finding temporary shelter in (of all places) the White House. As they take their quest back on the road, they encounter characters played Rosario Dawson and Zoey Deutch. The daughter of actress Lea Thompson, Deutch is especially good here, getting plenty of mileage out of applying what she’s established as her offbeat sensibility to the now-quite-familiar scenario of a zombie invasion. The original director and writers also are back, giving this a nice sense of continuity even after so long. ››› (R: AS, P, GV) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

Elizabeth Lail, who was the target of obsession in the first season of “You,” makes a very watchable heroine in this melodrama about a nurse who finds that there truly is an app for everything ... including a potentially unsettling prediction of how much longer the user has left to live. She supposedly has only three days remaining, so every minute counts as she tries to figure out how to prevent her demise. Tichina Arnold, P.J. Byrne and Peter Facinelli also appear, but the engaging Lail is charged with holding the screen for most of the picture, and she fares nicely in that. ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
