Four misfits find purpose in surreal ‘Dispatches From Elsewhere’ BY GEORGE DICKIE
Viewers who know Jason Segel from his comedic work in “How I Met Your Mother” or “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” will find him in unfamiliar and somewhat otherworldly territory in an anthology series debuting this week on AMC. In “Dispatches From Elsewhere,” a 10-hour series premiering Sunday, March 1, Segel stars as Peter, a 40-ish Philadelphian feeling like something is missing from his uber-mundane life. Answering an ad on a flier, he’s summoned to the mysterious Jejune Institute, where he encounters its imperious founder, Octavio (Richard E. Grant, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”), who exhorts to Peter that he is indeed special and destined for more. Moved to tears, Peter buys in wholeheartedly and soon meets other unfulfilled souls. Among them are Simone (Eve Lindley, “Outsiders”), a trans woman with a fear of intimacy and feelings of not belonging; Fredwynne (Andre Benjamin, “Jimi: All Is by My Side”), a man of great obsessions; and Janice (Sally Field, “Forrest
Gump”), an older woman feeling lost following her husband’s death. All are seeking direction in life and all have a belief in “the magic.” The story is the brainchild of Segel, who based it on an actual social experiment that took place in San Francisco a decade ago, in which, among other activities, participants searched for a missing fictional girl. In “Dispatches,” that girl’s name is Clara. “My starting point was: Who pulls a flier and why?” Segel explains. “And I was really interested in picking four versions of isolation, feeling separate, feeling like ‘the other,’ and slowly bringing them together until we realize that we’re all the same. And so that’s where I came up with these four characters. And at that point, I knew how to write a love story. It’s something I’m good at.” The first four episodes are dedicated to each of the characters, with the opener, “Peter,” introducing him to viewers and eventually Simone, with whom a mutual attraction quickly develops. Lindley, a trans actress, had never before seen a trans character
portrayed as a love interest and so was intrigued by that storyline and what she considered a wellrounded character. “I was so, like, moved by the fact that it was one of the best depictions of a trans character that I had ever read,” she says. “She felt so close to me and I felt like I knew her and I felt like I could tell her story. And it was really great because Jason allowed me to interject a lot of myself into her, and you know, we really worked together to bring her to life, I think.” Another character in the story is the city of Philadelphia, which Segel says he chose for its juxtaposition of urban beauty and grit. “Philly stood out because the show was about finding the beauty in unexpected places,” he says. “... But it also has more murals than any other city in the country. It’s one of the most art-laden cities that I’ve ever been to and it felt like the exact metaphor of our show. The beauty is just all around you, down every alleyway but you walk by it every day.”

Blake Lively’s Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN
“A Simple Favor” (2018):
Both Lively and Anna Kendrick do sly, enjoyable work in director Paul Feig’s genre-merging tale of a new, fast friendship that takes very unexpected turns.
“All I See Is You” (2016): Smart, sensitive work is done by Lively in this drama about a woman who regains her sight, then has to readjust every aspect of her life. “The Shallows” (2016): Doing a remarkably good job of holding the screen largely by herself, Lively plays a surfer stranded frustratingly close to shore upon being attacked and then stalked by a shark. “Cafe Society” (2016): Lively is part of a big, typically star-filled cast in Woody Allen’s story of movers and shakers – and those who aspire to be that – in 1930s Hollywood. “The Age of Adaline” (2015): The dilemma of someone
who doesn’t age is portrayed affectingly by Lively, and also by Harrison Ford as someone she loved years earlier, in this fantasy-drama.
Blake Lively in “The Rhythm Section”
“Savages” (2012): Lively
gets gritty in director Oliver Stone’s melodrama, playing the mutual girlfriend of two drug suppliers who get into big trouble with a Mexican cartel.
“Green Lantern” (2011): Besides the fact that it introduced her to her husband-to-be, Ryan Reynolds, this DC Comics adaptation also services Lively well in her role as “The Town” (2010): In director, co-writer and star Ben Affleck’s crime drama, Lively appears as the sister of one Boston-criminal-gang member (Jeremy Renner) who’s involved with another (Affleck). “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee” (2009): Lively
matches Robin Wright quite nicely as the younger incarnation of the title character, a woman who reflects on her life and times.
“The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” (2005): The movie that brought Lively her first wide notice teams her with Amber Tamblyn, Alexis Bledel and America Ferrera in the enduringly popular story of friends who hand off a very special pair of jeans among themselves.
MOVIE REVIEW
BY JAY BOBBIN
Blake Lively plays a new tune in ‘The Rhythm Section’ For fans of the James Bond movie series, it’s an event when the producers decide to invest – both figuratively and literally – in an outside project, because it doesn’t happen very often. “The Rhythm Section” would seem to be right up their alley, since it’s about an assassin-in-training ... which Bond effectively was in the version of “Casino Royale” that introduced Daniel Craig in the role. Even then, though, he was pretty sure of himself. That definitely is not the case for Stephanie Patrick, the character now played by Blake Lively and out for revenge upon finding out that her parents’ plane-crash deaths were not accidental. Stephanie’s life takes some pretty dark turns in the aftermath of her family tragedy, but after getting relevant information from a reporter (Raza Jaffrey, good to see on the big screen after turns on such television series as “Smash” and “Code Black”), she pulls herself together and seeks mentoring in the killing game a CIA veteran played by Jude Law (getting solid mileage from his gift of suggesting

that more lies beneath his surface). The catch to “The Rhythm Section” – and it’s a big one – is that Stephanie is not remotely as ready for action as she might think she is. On numerous occasions, she ends up as a deer in the headlights as she tries to face off against enemies, some of whom come very close to putting her out of business for good. Of course, that can’t be allowed to happen, since you’d have only about a 20-minute movie; still, she has to be the luckiest person still alive to escape peril after peril. To that end, Lively earns respect for obviously taking her blows here. In a good number of the action scenes, it’s very visibly her doing her own stunts, and she didn’t emerge unscathed; one mishap during filming sidelined her for a while and forced production to be paused. It’s a measure of the actress continuing to move beyond her “Gossip Girl”

association, and she can add this challenge to the ones she’s embraced in such projects as “Savages,” “The Shallows” and “A Simple Favor.” “This Is Us” Emmy winner Sterling K. Brown also is in the cast assembled for director Reed Morano, who made a mark (and also won an Emmy) by guiding early episodes of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” “The Rhythm Section” is based on one of several novels about Patrick by Mark Burnell, and while it’s far from certain that the others will be adapted, the one existing example supplies enough entertainment thanks to its expert makers and a sufficiently game star.

A fugitive story with some differences, this intense drama from director Melina Matsoukas and writer Lena Waithe (“The Chi”) pairs two people on a date that turns unforgettable for all the wrong reasons. Played by Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”) and Jodie Turner-Smith, their evening isn’t going well when it becomes much worse via the man’s self-defense killing of a police officer who stopped the couple for a traffic matter. They then go on the run, but what happened is visible to numerous people via a viral video – and as the two forge a bond that grows ever deeper, others view them as symbols of what the racial aspect of society is today. Bokeem Woodbine, Chloe Sevigny, Flea (of music’s Red Hot Chili Peppers) and country music’s Sturgill Simpson also appear. DVD extras: four “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by Matsoukas and Waithe. ››› (Also on Blu-Ray, 4K Ultra HD and On Demand)
Director Todd Haynes’ (“Far From Heaven”) fact-inspired, superbly cast drama features Mark Ruffalo (a producer of the picture as well) in the type of role he excels at, a lawyer drawn into a case alleging that a major corporation is involved in several deaths in West Virginia. His probe eventually suggests that chemical dumping has occurred at a farm, and that he and his pregnant wife (Anne Hathaway) might even be at risk from the alleged pollutants ... due to man-made chemicals that accrue in the human blood stream over years and apparently can cause cancer and other illnesses. The attorney gambles all that he has in his pursuit of justice, facing ostracism from the locals for suing the area’s major employer. Cowritten for the screen by Matthew Michael Carnahan (“World War Z”), the compelling film also stars Tim Robbins, Mare Winningham, Bill Pullman, Victor Garber and William Jackson Harper (“The Good Place”). ››› (PG-13: AS, P)
“SEVEN WORLDS, ONE PLANET”
The “worlds” actually are the continents of Earth in the case of this BBC-produced nature miniseries recently televised by BBC America (as well as its sister networks AMC, IFC and Sundance TV). Narrated by genre staple David Attenborough, the program about the various regions’ atmospheres and their roles in helping to develop animal life proved to be sadly timely, since the episode

Film crews that went to the featured areas for the series focused on capturing rare footage not only on the surface, but also in such locales as underground caves and underwater pyramids ... and though drones were used, the technology didn’t always work perfectly, as viewers are able to see. ››› (Not rated) (Also on Blu-Ray and 4K Ultra HD)
“VIENNA BLOOD”
Just after concluding its telecasts on PBS, this melodrama inspired by Frank Tallis novels – and adapted by Steve Thompson (“Sherlock”) – makes its home-video debut, teaming one of legendary psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud’s disciples (played by Matthew Beard) with a rather traditional police detective (Juergen Maurer) who isn’t particularly a fan of his new partner’s deeply cerebral approach to solving several murders in turn-of-the-century Vienna. The Austrian society of the time also has an effect on their investigations, with anti-Semitism as one of the factors they must contend with. Co-produced by Austrian and German television outlets, the series is divided into three two-part stories. (Not rated: AS, V)

Some of them are feline-inspired, and the recent reception (or lack thereof) to the movie version of “Cats” –in which Swift was featured –- might be giving her mixed feelings about that attire now, but it remains an element of the visual appearance that has contributed to her fame. A fun reminder of the days when made-for-TV movies were plentiful and offered a parade of familiar faces, this 1978 melodrama – which director Jerry Jameson and producer William Frye made soon after collaborating on “Airport ‘77” – originally was shown by ABC to tie into Super Bowl XII. In the tradition of disaster films, it enmeshes various characters in dilemmas all linked to a big game, with Ken Howard (“The White Shadow”) and a pre“Magnum, p.i.” Tom Selleck as the teams’ respective quarterbacks. Not only is a gambling operation trying to influence the outcome of the contest, a killer is loose in the crowd ... shades of the then-recent “Two-Minute Warning,” which also featured this story’s David Janssen.
