‘His Dark Materials’ – One girl’s quest to find a missing friend

Ruth Wilson stars in “His Dark Materials,” premiering Monday on HBO.

The

Sumter Scene November 2 - November 9, 2019

BY GEORGE DICKIE

In a fantastical world resembling Victorian England, a girl sets out in

search for her kidnapped friend. Where the quest takes her drives the storyline of a series premiering this week on HBO. From the outset of “His Dark Materials,” based on Philip Pullman’s award-winning trilogy of the same name and debuting Monday, Nov. 4, it’s clear that Lyra (Dafne Keen, “Logan”) is no average teen. She’s gutsy, determined and very intelligent, gifts that are nurtured by her instructors at the Magisterium, a Big Brother-esque boarding school, and will serve her well as she seeks her fellow orphan Roger (Lewin Lloyd, “Taboo”). Her uncle, Lord Asriel (James McAvoy, “Filth”), is also preparing for an adventure of his own to the North, where a friend’s expedition party has gone missing. It’s a turbulent, frozen place where witches whisper of a child with a great destiny. Lyra isn’t invited on this trip, much to her disappointment, but Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson, “The Affair”), a woman of considerable means and dubious motives, sees something special in the child and takes her under her wing. The girl accepts the opportunity willingly – as did Keen when first offered the role. “I feel it’s very needed right now because we don’t usually have young woman leads,” the youthful British actress explained to a recent gathering of journalists in Beverly Hills, Calif. “We have more and more, thank God, but they’re not something that we have in abundance, and especially having to portray a character who is so

strong and is so determined and who is a hero is very fun to do, and I feel very privileged to be able to do that.” One of the more whimsical elements of this story are the daemons, digitized animal companions that personify each human character’s soul and serve as their protector and adviser. Lyra’s is Pan, a shapeshifting creature that moves between ferret, bird and possum, while Coulter’s is a monkey and Asriel’s is a snow leopard, all of which prove critical to each character’s journey. “I didn’t really see myself as Lord Asriel but I definitely have an inner snow leopard in me,” McAvoy quips. “ ... And it’s just an interesting relationship with yourself because you get to look at yourself and talk to yourself and talk to your soul and you can’t really hide from who you are in the way that people in our world can. So that was pretty interesting.” For Wilson, the daemon helped her find her way into her character “That for me was a key point at which how I worked out how Mrs. Coulter was,” British actress explains, “was her relationship with herself, her daemon. And so my monkey – she’s Monkey, basically, so how to find the simian in me.” The eight-episode first season also stars Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton”), Clarke Peters (“The Wire”), James Cosmo (“Braveheart”), Anne-Marie Duff (“Nowhere Boy”) and Ariyon Bakare (“Life”).

“Movie: A.I.: Artificial Intelligence” Adapted and directed by Steven Spielberg from a concept by the late Stanley Kubrick, this 2001 fantasy proved darker than many moviegoers expected. Haley Joel Osment (“The Sixth Sense”) plays an artificially created boy brought home by a couple to take the place of their deceased child. Later abandoned by them, he’s mentored by an “older” robot (Jude Law). “Movie: Astro Boy” The classic Japanese cartoon gets an impressive stylistic update in this computer-animated retelling, featuring the voice of Freddie Highmore (“Finding Neverland”) as the title character, a robot designed in the image of its creator’s (voice of Nicolas Cage) son. While Astro Boy has great responsibility, he just wants to find his own place in the world. Charlize Theron, Samuel L. Jackson, Donald Sutherland and Kristen Bell also are heard.

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 3 TO 9, 2019

Joaquin Phoenix’s Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN

THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: TAURUS, GEMINI AND CANCER

ARIES

Your colleagues and friends will encourage you to take charge, even if you’d rather stay on the sidelines. Trust in your abilities and it will be a big success.

TAURUS

When the company you work for undergoes restructuring, you’re sure to feel some stress. Luckily, you’ll climb a few more rungs of the ladder during this chaotic period.

GEMINI

There will be talk of travel this week. You may be suddenly inspired by a training program that could lead you to a new career. You could also adopt a new spiritual practice.

CANCER

Emotions are in the air this week, and you’ll be easily moved. You may take the first steps towards buying a new home. You’ll be surprised to find that your financial situation is better than you thought.

LEO

Before reaching a decision, it’s important to gather all the information necessary and to weigh the pros with the cons. Take your time, even if others are pressuring you to decide.

VIRGO

You’ll have a lot of work to do this week and a slight cold risks slowing you down considerably. Make sure you get enough sleep and take care of your health if you don’t want to drop the ball.

LIBRA

You’ll be the focus of attention this week. You’ll use your wits to defuse a tense situation. Someone may also trust you with a secret. Make sure to keep it to yourself.

SCORPIO

With many stores getting into the Christmas spirit already, you’ll be inspired to make a list of gifts to offer those closest to you. You’ll also start to get ready for the family holiday party.

SAGITTARIUS

Don’t forget the GPS before heading somewhere new so you don’t get lost. You’ll finally get confirmation of something you’ve been waiting for at work.

CAPRICORN

You should receive a sum of money you’ve been owed for a while now, through a refund or an insurance settlement. You’ll be happy to finally loosen your belt.

AQUARIUS

You’ll have a front row seat for all sorts of events and easily bring people together. Additionally, you’ll be the first one to propose initiatives that will make things go more smoothly.

PISCES

The week will start with a little confusion. You’ll need a second coffee once you get to the office if you want to beat your procrastination. You’ll find yourself with your head in the clouds on more than one occasion.

“You Were Never Really Here” (2017): As a Gulf War veteran who freelances to recover missing teens, Phoenix superbly portrays the loss of a person’s perception between fantasy and reality. “Her” (2013): Working with “someone” who isn’t really there always is an acting challenge, and Phoenix fares quite well with it as a writer who falls for an artificial intelligence (voiced by Scarlett Johansson). “The Master” (2012): An excellent Phoenix meets the tough task of matching Philip Seymour Hoffman, who’s amazing as a social-movement leader who draws in an ex-serviceman (Phoenix). “I’m Still Here” (2010): Phoenix left many people wondering if he was abandoning his career as a direct result of this pseudo-documentary that he cowrote with director Casey Affleck.

THE SUMTER ITEM BY JAY BOBBIN

‘Joker’ is wild, thanks mainly to Joaquin Phoenix Can you be troubled and entertained by a movie at the same time? Other films have prompted that question, but “Joker” may be the ultimate example. If you’re disturbed by its promise of a violent scenario of urban decay, it’s for good reason: Director and cowriter Todd Phillips doesn’t shirk from depicting that for a minute of the two-hour running time. But the picture also wants to explain how Batman’s maniacally laughing DC Universe enemy became who he is, giving Joaquin Phoenix the means for a mesmerizing performance. While the part brought Heath Ledger a posthumous Oscar for “The Dark Knight,” Phoenix makes it his own with a physicality you won’t soon forget. His dancing on a staircase like a bizarre Fred Astaire absolutely ensures that. You might be surprised to feel empathy for the character as his earlier circumstances become clear, but eventually, he becomes the Joker that we know and fear. Someone who should fear him – but his ego won’t let him – is The Joker’s idol, a talk-show host played by Robert De Niro in a neat reverse twist on his work in “The King of Comedy.” An easy way to turn someone’s feeling for you from fondness to fury is to mock him openly, and that’s just what De Niro’s Murray Franklin does to Arthur Fleck, alias The Joker ... resulting in the cautionary note the

“Reservation Road” (2007): The title is the location of a tragedy that impacts two families, including the one headed by Phoenix’s character, in director Terry George’s gripping drama. “Walk the Line” (2005): Phoenix does a dynamic job – and his own singing – as Johnny Cash in this drama of the relationship between the countrymusic icon and June Carter (Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon). “Gladiator” (2000): Phoenix is eminently hissable as the vengeful Commodus, who makes life as rough as possible for the enslaved Maximus (Russell Crowe), in director Ridley Scott’s Oscar-winning epic. “The Yards” (2000): Director and co-writer James Gray’s crime-gang drama gives Phoenix a great role as the leader of such a group, who mulls having to turn traitor against a friend.

“Inventing the Abbotts” (1997): In partnership with Billy Crudup, Phoenix does affecting work as one of two siblings who woo the more-privileged daughters of the titular Abbott family. “To Die For” (1995): Phoenix really started to make a name for himself by playing one of the patsies of an aspiring newscaster (Nicole Kidman) who’s willing to do anything to get ahead.

film intends to strike. The concerns that some have voiced over “Joker” even existing obviously are understandable; since the picture does exist, taken strictly in cinematic terms, it has to be said that it achieves what it wants to. That extends to its invoking of Bruce Wayne and his family, against whom The Joker has a personal vendetta related to the treatment of his mother (the always excellent Frances Conroy), a former employee of that privileged clan. We don’t get to the Batman stage of Bruce – this is The Joker’s movie, after all – but it’s interesting to see those seeds planted for the famous mythology that we know is coming. The overall production of “Joker” is expectedly grim and handsome, but for any and every other element of the film, it has to have the right actor in the title role to work. Joaquin Phoenix very obviously is that actor, and while there is acknowledgment of the controversy surrounding the movie, don’t be surprised to see him put The Joker back on an Oscar-bound path.

rom the first families making the annual pilgrimage from plantations to “The Summer Town” to escape the Santee River’s reigning mosquitoes to its chartering on 1889’s Christmas Eve to cypress swamps, timber trades and parish populace, the Town of Summerton has retained its original appeal for hunting and outdoor recreation. Summerton, the small town southwest of Manning in Clarendon County, has capitalized on its proximity to the Lake Marion shoreline and rural South Carolina’s Santee Cooper Lake Country amenities. “We’ve claimed our own title of Duck Capital of South Carolina,” said Christina Darby, Duckfest co-chair, of Summerton’s signature event. That title rounds around the top of the logo for the festival. It is now in its fourth year, and Mayor Mac Bagnal wanted to draw people – lifelong neighbors, Midlands residents and far-away tourists – to a festival celebrating the area’s vast outdoor appeal, from hunting to fishing to camping, hiking, biking, boating, golfing, you name it. Darby said people come from all over the country for Duckfest, highlighted by an official duck-calling competition that qualifies for the national level and a well-attended beauty pageant. About 6,000 came last year for the 60-sponsor, volunteer-run festival to the town of 1,000, according to Municipal Association of South Carolina population data. New this year is a show from the Ultimate Air Dogs, a firefighter training obstacle course challenge and expanded activities for kids. Attendees can come for a specific event, but Darby said she and festival organizers encourage people to stay all day. Picnic blankets, chairs, coolers and pets are all welcome. Between all the vendors selling outdoor-focused products, such as handmade duck calls, metal crafts and other local artists’ pieces, and all the mouth-watering food, the day could be a perfect one to relax with friends and family and soak in what has appealed about Summerton for generations.

umter native Richard Davis said he’s got a “really sweet gig. He gets to do full time what he loves. Not everybody can say that.” The 28-year-old started his business, Davis Marine Management, less than a year ago and feels he’s found his niche. He also works in the family business, Extreme Sports, run by his parents. While he was an avid motocross competitor from age 4 to 21, Davis also grew up around boats, often going out with his father, a boat enthusiast. Having grown up on the water, living at Lake Marion for a few years and being around boats for his entire life convinced him he didn’t want to do anything else. Over the years, he “learned a lot about boats.” So much, in fact, that he “… always had people calling me for advice.” He decided to turn his boat expertise and 10 years’ experience in the marine industry into a boat brokerage business, which he said is going very well. Davis Marine Management, he said, makes the process of buying and selling boats much easier for his clients. When he gets a call for a consultation, Davis said, “I will come SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2019 | LAKESIDE out and36get information, do market research to see what the boat is selling for, its value and just a lot about the boat.” Most of his sales are advertised and marketed on the internet, he said, “after we agree on a listing price and commission.” He cleans the boat, and his strong interest in photography allows him to take professional-grade photos. Davis stores the boat, shows it “anytime”

and will take it out for a sea trial or “test drive.” He consults the seller regarding any offers, and if one is accepted, Davis handles all the paperwork, which can be quite complicated. He also provides financing options. In addition, Davis also works with clients interested in buying a boat, again handling all the details and paperwork. “There is a great demand for people wanting me to sell their boats this year,” he said. “People don’t have time to meet with the buyer and haggle over the price, complete all the paperwork.” He specializes in center console boats and has sold bass boats, pontoons and other boats. In fact, Davis will sell almost any kind and size boat. He prefers saltwater boating and “gets down to the coast regularly for fishing.”by Sharon Haley | Photographs Story Davis thinks he is one of very few boat brokers west of the coast, which is a great advantage of living in Sumter. “My goal is to do this full time,” he said. “Being in the center of the state gives me a hub to work out of. I can show boats and meet with people from all over. There is nobody else around doing this. Also, the paperwork can all be done electronically – you don’t even have to see me. “I take the headache out of buying and selling boats.” Contact Richard Davis 24 hours a day, at (803) 968-7878. THE SUMTER ITEM

“FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW” The repartee between Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in earlier “Fast & Furious” editions that prompted the thought of giving them their own spinoff – and even with Helen Mirren showing up as the mother of Statham’s Shaw again, this is the expected pedal-to-the-metal action fest from the first minute. Shaw’s slster, a British spy played by Vanessa Kirby, is the reason federal agent Hobbs (Johnson) and troubleshooter Shaw are in each other’s orbit again. She has failed to stop an agent turned terrorist (Idris Elba) who’s bent on unleashing a devastating virus on mankind, so Hobbs and Shaw step in to help finish the job. The picture just keeps moving for two hours-plus at a clip that rarely gives you enough time to question anything – including why some other familiar faces pop up again – thanks not only to the established “Fast & Furious” formula, but also to director David Leitch, of the similarly furious “John Wick” movies. Shakespeare this is not, but if you’re going to go along for the ride it promises, you’re assured of having fun with it. DVD extras: four “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by Leitch; deleted, extended and alternate scenes. ››› (PG-13: AS. P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

“THE KITCHEN” Based on a comic-book series, this drama is a cousin of such other movies as “Widows” and even the television series “Good Girls” to a degree, since it dispatches several ladies to continue the misdeeds in the men in their lives. The film presents an interesting starring trio in Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Elisabeth Moss – and even though two of those names connote humor, this isn’t a comedy, as its considerable violence confirms. After their mobster spouses go to jail for their activities in 1970s-era Hell’s Kitchen, the women continue their men’s business ... and a violent business, it is. The wives see value in carrying on that mission, but in doing so, they attract the attention of the FBI and other criminals. The picture marks the directing debut of Andrea Berloff, the co-writer of “Straight Outta Compton”; she plays to each of her stars’ strengths, no simple accomplishment given how diverse the performers are. Also notable in the cast is Margo Martindale (“The Americans”), typically fine as another underworld figure who shouldn’t be messed with. DVD extra: “making-of” documentary. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN” Though it also involves a dog that talks to viewers, if you’re used to Milo Ventimiglia in his “This Is Us” television mode, you’ll be right at home with his work in this tale – based in Garth Stein’s novel – of family emotions and crises. He plays an auto racing driver whose pet (voiced by Kevin Costner) offers observations while his master is away on the car circuit, thus causing him to miss significant milestones with his wife (Amanda Seyfried) ... and also causing strife between the racer and his resentful father-inlaw (Martin Donovan). Kathy Baker and Gary Cole also appear in the story, whose canine aspect is likely to appeal to animal lovers and those who have enjoyed other such movies made recently. The film also is notable as one of the first 20th Century Fox productions to be released by Disney after the merging of those

studios. DVD extras: five “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by director Simon Curtis. ››› (PG: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “YELLOWSTONE: SEASON TWO” It’s a big home-video week for Kevin Costner, since not only is he speaking the words of a dog elsewhere, he also appears in the sophomore round of his successful Paramount Network drama. Series co-creator Taylor Sheridan had a hand in writing all 10 episodes here, which continue to trace the challenges faced by John Dutton (Costner) in operating and keeping control of an enormous modern ranch, while striving to avoid conflict with National Park Service authorities and the residents of an Indian reservation. A third season of the show has been ordered; its stars also include Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser and Gil Birmingham, with Neal McDonough (“Arrow”) a notable cast addition this time. DVD extras: five “makingof” documentaries; “Behind the Story” and “Stories From the Bunkhouse” featurettes. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray) “GOOD OMENS” An angel and the devil are pals, sort of, in this Amazon series and BBC co-production based on the novel by Neil Gaiman (who adapted it for this version) and the late Terry Pratchett. Respectively played by Michael Sheen (now appearing as a sort of devil on the Fox show “Prodigal Son”) and David Tennant, the characters unite to prevent Armageddon. To do that, however, they’ll have to locate the Antichrist ... a youngster (Sam Taylor Buck) who doesn’t realize his potential impact on the world. Frances McDormand, Jon Hamm, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael McKean, Miranda Richardson, Nick Offerman and Mireille Enos also are in the cast – and though the story here is self-contained, there’s been loose talk about a possible Season 2, though Gaiman has said he wouldn’t have any involvement in it. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)aaa
