WEEK OF JANUARY 20 TO 26, 2019

BY GEORGE DICKIE

THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: LIBRA, SCORPIO AND SAGITTARIUS

ARIES

You’ll find yourself in the middle of an awkward situation. This anecdote will make your colleagues laugh for years but your ego may be a little bruised as a result.

TAURUS

You spend a lot of time taking care of your home and family; don’t forget to make time for yourself too. You can always make meals in advance for your family.

GEMINI

Mennonites get pulled into drug-smuggling – and can’t get out – in WGN America’s ‘Pure’ We often think of Mennonites as devoutly religious people who live simple lives free from the less-than-desireable aspects of modern existence. But a series premiering this week on WGN America shows that they, too, are not immune to the horrors of the 21st century. In “Pure,” an hourlong drama premiering Wednesday, Jan. 23, we are introduced to the Funk family, whose patriarch Noah (Ryan Robbins, “Arrow,” “The Killing”) is a newly elected Mennonite pastor who vows to rid his rural Pennsylvania community of drugs and corruption with the help of his devoted wife Anna (Alex Paxton-Beesley, “The Strain,” “Murdoch Mysteries”). But the lure of easy money proves too great for Noah, who agrees to smuggle drugs from Mexico one time for a crime syndicate in return for a large payoff, but an unfortunate series of events ensures that getting out won’t be as easy as he thought. “What better mule than a Mennonite, a person of the cloth?” Robbins says. “I don’t think you would expect them. ... And somebody had the idea to approach a particular Mennonite and his family and offer him this opportunity. And it’s really easy to, I think, get caught up in these kinds of things when you think, ‘Oh, it’s a simple opportunity that will be better for my people for a short time and then I will just get out.’ But as we all know, the getting out is the hard part.”

Travel is on the horizon this week. Additionally, you’ll find yourself helping your friends and family by being a sounding board. You’ll be recognized and appreciated for your selflessness.

CANCER

Love brightens your week. If you’re single, you’ll meet a gem of an individual who wants to start a life with you. If you’re already in a relationship, longterm plans will solidify it.

LEO

Jeanine Mason and Nathan Parsons

“We’re sort of put into an impossible position,” Paxton-Beesley adds, “where we are forced to confront what’s going on and we’re really implicated against our wishes. And that’s where, for me, Anna became really fascinating because when you’re confronted with these really difficult decisions where it feels like there is no obvious right choice, what her priorities are is always really interesting to me. And the journey of that through Season 1, what those priorities are and then how they may grow or change through Season 2 was really interesting to be on the inside of.” Filmed in Nova Scotia, Canada, the series is based on actual events. To play their characters, the actors had access to a Mennonite consultant, who advised them on the culture, the language and the belief system. And while this story contains elements of truth, Robbins is quick to assert that the great majority of Mennonites are God-fearing, law-abiding folks. “We certainly don’t paint Mennonites in a bad light at all,” Robbins says. “It’s just the opposite. We’re trying to show these people, they’re just characters that are struggling to be good, to continue to be good in this really crazy world that’s just sort of pitting nothing but bad against them, and that’s the nature of the story. Just trying to fight through all of the trash to find the light.”

Your interpersonal skills and dynamic personality will be in full force this week. An event that you organize will be a great success and will have a considerable impact on your future.

VIRGO

There will be lots of action and a number of surprise twists this week. One of your wildest dreams is within sight but the path to get there is still unclear.

LIBRA

Fatigue will start to set in after a few stressful days. You’ll be overcome by inspiration and create a masterpiece.

SCORPIO

Time isn’t always easy to manage: you’ll find yourself with multiple tasks that can’t wait. At work, you’ll be put in charge of some important cases, which will help advance your career.

SAGITTARIUS

You’ll have to fight hard to get that promotion you’ve had your eye on. You’ll be greatly rewarded for a little extra effort.

CAPRICORN

Family events may make you think about moving closer to home. You’ll have to make an important decision that will require lots of thought.

AQUARIUS

You’ll have the urge to go back to school. At work and in your personal life, there’s a good chance you’ll need to negotiate with strangers or converse in a foreign language.

PISCES

At work, there will be lots of small details that take a huge amount of time to complete. The right medication or treatment finally helps solve a recurring health problem.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,

Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Emily Blunt’s Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN “A Quiet Place” (2018): Her husband, John Krasinski, directed and also stars – but Blunt does much of the heavy lifting in this hugely involving thriller, and very particularly in a scene that places her in a bathtub. “The Girl on the Train” (2016): Blunt is quite effective in this adaptation of Paula Hawkins’ best seller about a troubled commuter who believes something terrible has happened to a woman she’s watched regularly from the train. “Sicario” (2015): Blunt enjoyed some of her best reviews yet from this melodrama of an FBI agent sent to dismantle a drug cartel on the American-Mexican border. “Into the Woods” (2014): Holding her own dramatically and musically against some heavyweights, Blunt played the child-wanting wife of the baker (current CBS late-night star James Corden) in this adaptation of the stage hit. “Edge of Tomorrow” (2014): Blunt earned acclaim for playing tough as a soldier helping a battle novice (Tom Cruise) fight aliens ... over and over, in a repeating, Groundhog Day-like loop. “Your Sister’s Sister” (2011): Blunt plays the first sibling in this engaging comedy-drama that sees the character’s friend and her sister (Mark Duplass, Rosemarie DeWitt) become romantically intertwined. “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” (2011): Despite its clinical-sounding title, this romantic drama got lots of charm out of Blunt and Ewan McGregor as consultants on an improbable project in a desert. “The Young Victoria” (2009): Playing – indeed – the young Queen Victoria, in a script by Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”), Blunt proved her skill at classic roles in addition to more contemporary parts. “Sunshine Cleaning” (2008): Blunt and Amy Adams made a terrific team as dissimilar sisters making a stab at business as a crime-scene clean-up crew. “The Devil Wears Prada” (2006): She’d done other projects in her native England, but Blunt secured international name-and-face value with her memorable work as a fashion-magazine titan’s (Meryl Streep) strident assistant.

‘Mary Poppins Returns’ in very fine form The most remarkable thing about “Mary Poppins Returns” is how much it had to work against, and how well it does that. The 1964 Disney classic is one of those movies many people would prefer to be left untouched by a sequel, especially after so many years and so many generations of fans. No one else could be as purely magical as Julie Andrews, who won an Oscar for the title role, but Emily Blunt makes a logical and effective-in-her-own-way choice to succeed her among today’s top film actresses. Thanks to her ever-ready parasol, Mary floats back into the lives of the now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, played by Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw. Michael is especially at loose ends over the loss of their mother, to the degree that the bank he works for is ready to repossess the Banks’ house. Saving it rests with an inheritance from the late Banks father, provided the offspring can find the certificate that proves they have it. That’s where Mary steps in to help, dispensing more of the gentle guidance she’s so known for. Assisting her is Jack, a chimney sweep who’s more or less the successor to Dick Van Dyke’s Bert ... and he’s played by “Hamilton” wunderkund Lin-Manuel Miranda, whose energy is a very big boost to the proceedings here (and the likely springboard to a great screen career, if he can keep finding appropriate projects). Van Dyke himself makes an appearance here, and director Rob Marshall also makes use of such greats as Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury, Julie Walters and David Warner in telling the new story. “New” is something of a qualifier, though; if you put this movie beside the first one, it’s easy to see there’s a parallel element for just about everything that has kept the original “Mary Poppins” so embraced by audiences. It’s actually a smart formula, since straying too far from the initial P.L. Travers tale might have caused a backlash. “Mary Poppins” is just one of those things you don’t mess with, and the reverence toward it is very clear here. That’s also evident in the songs by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, which have just enough freshness while evoking memories of the tunes composed so many years ago by the Sherman brothers. Memories are no small factor in the case of “Mary Poppins Returns,” since more than a few viewers will see it through the prism of their experience with the mid-’60s movie. Much to its credit, just like the medicine enhanced by a spoonful of sugar, it goes down in a most delightful way. Michael B. Jordan

Jamie Lee Curtis

“FIRST MAN” Reteamed from “La La Land,” Ryan Gosling and director Damien Chazelle prove to be as skilled as partners in telling the true story of astronaut Neil Armstrong – the first man to walk on the moon – as they were on a musical. The flight sequences are as realistic as any have been on the screen, even accounting for the things that seem to go wrong, though known fact has established that Armstrong survived all his missions. Gosling also is very credible in the quieter biographical scenes, playing Armstrong as someone who wasn’t always entirely comfortable in the spotlight, if at all. Emmy winner Claire Foy (“The Crown”) is fine as the spaceman’s wife, who shares the fears of those married to people in dangerous occupations – especially since she knew that in its early stages, NASA was flying by the seat of its pants. Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler and Corey Stoll also appear in the drama, which is a touch on the lengthy side, but is everything one could want it to be for the story it tells. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
