WEEK OF JANUARY 27 TO FEBRUARY 2, 2019

BY GEORGE DICKIE

THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: ARIES, AQUARIUS AND PISCES

ARIES

You’ll be especially sensitive this week, which will lead to your emotions doing a number on you. You’ll uncover a fraudulent situation at work or at home.

TAURUS

Make sure your negotiating skills are honed because you’ll need them at work and in your personal life. You’ll finalize a deal that will have a big impact on your career.

GEMINI

You’ll find yourself the centre of attention this week, which will delight you. You’ll be rewarded for your work, which may come in the form of a promotion at work.

CANCER

Kellie Martin revisits ‘Death of a Cheerleader’

If you’ve been feeling under the weather lately, it’s time to take a break. With a bit of rest and relaxation, you’ll be back in shape in no time.

LEO

After a party, your house will be upside down and you’ll want to get it in order as fast as possible. You’ll find yourself getting rid of things you don’t need, which will make you feel liberated.

Bridget Moretti (left) and Kellie Martin

VIRGO

For all that she’s done on television – and she’s certainly done a lot – “Death of a Cheerleader” remains one of Kellie Martin’s most popular credits. That’s why the producers of a remake were so eager for her to participate, they let her choose any role she wanted, within reason. She settled on playing an FBI agent who investigates the murder of one high-school student by another in the factinspired drama that Lifetime presents in its new form Saturday, Feb. 2. Also known as “A Friend to Die For,” the 1994 version cast Martin (who had just come off her series run on “Life Goes On’) as a teen desperate to be accepted by a popular peer, portrayed by Tori Spelling (then starring on ”Beverly Hills, 90210“). Now, those parts belong to Aubrey Peeples (”Nashville“) and Sarah Dugdale (”Supernatural“) respectively, but Martin is pleased to be on board as well. “I think my first reaction was that I giggled,” she recalls of getting the remake offer. “First I thought, ‘How great,’ because it’s such a fascinating story that I wasn’t surprised that they wanted to revisit it. Secondly, I thought, ‘Am I this old? Is that what it is?”’ The FBI role appealed to Martin largely because she could be in the story’s big interrogation scene ...

again. However, she’s on the other side of the table this time. “It was written for a man,” Martin reports. “I remember feeling pretty gutted through the entire shooting of the (original) movie. I think I was 17, and every single day was fraught with the maximum amount of emotion. With this, I could be clear-eyed and get (the suspect) to start talking.” Martin reasons that her playing such an unexpected twist was a big factor in the mid-’90s impact “Death of a Cheerleader” had: “I feel like people were able to identify with the character on a certain level, and then she did something so horrible, that was a big surprise.” At this stage of her career and life, married mother-of-two Martin – a Hallmark Channel staple lately, encompassing love stories and the lighter “Hailey Dean” mysteries – admits that such intense drama is “not a place I like to go, and I find that I don’t really choose those parts anymore. It’s interesting to revisit this, though.” Indeed, Martin marvels at how “people love this movie” 25 years after NBC aired the original take on it. “They’re happy to watch it over and over, and people are still always coming up to me and saying that it’s their favorite television movie of all time. ‘The Face on the Milk Carton’ is another one of mine that people really love.”

You’ll speak your mind and express what those around you have only been thinking. Something you write may make its way around the world, much to your surprise and delight.

LIBRA

You’ll be preoccupied by a financial difficulty. This will probably be the result of a mistake, like a bill that wasn’t destined for you, and you’ll be back to enjoying your life in no time.

SCORPIO

There will be lots of action this week. You’ll receive invitations from friends and be persuaded to leave your home. You’ll enjoy yourself and be convinced to partake in group activities more often.

SAGITTARIUS

You’ll need that second coffee to lift your spirits and finally end your procrastination. You’ll find a new capacity to efficiently start and complete a number of jobs on your to-do list.

CAPRICORN

You’ll find yourself in the hub of a crowd, which will leave you craving some alone time. At work, clients will be unusually vague and confusing with their requests.

AQUARIUS

You’ll be offered a promotion at work. Before you accept, make sure to talk to your partner and the rest of your family to avoid misunderstandings.

PISCES

The winter blues will begin to set in, and you’ll find yourself planning a vacation somewhere warm. This will revitalize you and help you find your zest for life.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,

Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Christian Bale’s Top 10BYMovies JAY BOBBIN “The Big Short” (2015): Director and co-writer Adam McKay’s great, fact-inspired comedy-drama includes Bale as one of the investors who make financial moves based on the housingmarket crisis of 2005. “American Hustle” (2013): Bale does solid work, often in conjunction with fellow star Amy Adams, in director David O. Russell’s tale of con artists forced to do the bidding of an FBI agent (Bradley Cooper).

“The Fighter” (2010): A superb Bale rightfully won an Oscar as the world-weary half brother trainer of a boxer (Mark Wahlberg) aiming for a title in this fact-inspired drama. “Public Enemies” (2009): Bale is a stalwart Melvin Purvis, the FBI man who tracked most wanted criminal John Dillinger (Johnny Depp). “The Dark Knight” (2008): For Heath Ledger’s Joker to work so well, Bale has to get his Batman right – and he does. “I’m Not There” (2007): Bale shared billing with Ledger for the first time by playing one of the variations of music icon Bob Dylan here.

‘Vice’ spotlights Dick Cheney and other political power players Recent history can be a dicey thing to deal with in a movie if it’s not a documentary, since memories of the actual players and situations tend to be strong. Writer and director Adam McKay takes that gamble with “Vice,” and since he’s a filmmaker normally concerned with comedy, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that he takes a largely bemused view of the rise of Dick Cheney – who would make a mark as the vice president serving under George W. Bush. What’s as remarkable as the story told here is the transformation of star Christian Bale into Cheney, and it genuinely is a transformation in the truest sense of the term: If you’re at all familiar with Bale from his “Batman” turns or even “American Psycho,” you might shake your head in disbelief at

“3:10 to Yuma” (2007): In this compelling remake of a classic Western, Bale matches brains and brawn with Russell Crowe in the saga of an outlaw being transported to justice. “Batman Begins” (2005): Bale set the groundwork for his take on Bruce Wayne and the millionaire’s alter ego, the Caped Crusader, by rebooting the legend in this moody adventure. “American Psycho” (2000): In his most iconic role before he tackled Batman, Bale is Patrick Bateman, investment banker and secret serial killer. “Empire of the Sun” (1987): In the Steven Spielberg-directed drama that introduced Bale to worldwide audiences, the actor is impressive as an English youth in China during World War II. the notion that he could be turned into a believable Cheney. After seeing “Vice,” you’ll shake your head in disbelief that it’s actually achieved. Being able to convert Bale’s appearance so effectively helps “Vice” immensely, since the film also deals with Cheney’s younger years, at the start of his relationship with wife Lynne. In that part, Amy Adams also has her sessions with movie makeup, but the result isn’t quite as pronounced as it is with Bale. Still, she has to capture and maintain the essence of Lynne Cheney – who really was the woman behind the man, at least as “Vice” tells it – and the actress does that typically well. She’s also a measure of the fact that even though “Vice” is principally about Dick Cheney, more interesting characters surround him, which also appears to be a big chunk of the point McKay wants to make. Coming off his Oscar win last year for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” Sam Rockwell makes a colorful second President Bush without tipping into caricature, and Steve Carell comes very close to stealing the show as Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld ... who was something of a “character” during his years of political service. For those familiar with the U.S. history of the past two decades, “Vice” becomes a list of famous names, extending to Gen. Colin Powell (played by Tyler Perry, who knows more than a bit about sly humor himself) and Condoleezza Rice (LisaGay Hamilton). There’s fun to be had in that, and it helps a viewer to hang with a storytelling approach that not everyone might be a fan of. Still, it’s the approach that has worked for McKay before, notably in “The Big Short.” It may not be as completely successful in “Vice,” but the result is likely to keep you on your toes for just over two hours anyway.

“THE WIFE” Though a generation now knows her for “Guardians of the Galaxy,” earthbound parts of dramatic substance are the true sweet spots for Glenn Close – as confirmed by her current run at film awards for this picture, encompassing her Golden Globe win. Based on a novel by Meg Wolitzer, the story would seem to be at first about the husband played by Jonathan Pryce ... specifically, a newly Nobel Prize-honored author who is so celebrated in the 1990s, he surpasses thenPresident Bill Clinton as the choice for a magazine cover. The writer’s wife is everything he isn’t: classy, moderate, and a steadying force that he likely would be lost without. However, they have problems that are stoked by the questioning of another writer (Christian Slater) who’s working on a biography of the husband. Sweden’s Bjorn Runge directs from a screenplay by the esteemed Jane Anderson (“The Baby Dance”). SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE

The basic elements of the Tchaikovsky-scored ballet get a big expansion in this Disney effort, which certainly is scenic enough, though it’s still highly advisable to check out a production of the original. Here, a Victorian youngster (played by Mackenzie Foy) loses her mother, then goes to a Christmas gala where her toymaker godfather (Morgan Freeman) magically sends her into the other titular realms, where she encounters such “Nutcracker” staples as soldiers and mice ... but they’re not quite as simplistic as in the classic presentation. Helen Mirren, Keira Knightley, Richard E. Grant and celebrated dancer Misty Copeland also turn up in the film handled by two accomplished directors, Lasse Hallstrom (“The Cider House Rules”) and Joe Johnston (“Jumanji”). ››› (PG: AS) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “BOY ERASED” In his second feature-directing turn, actor Joel Edgerton (“Red Sparrow”) – who also adapted the screenplay from Garrard Conley’s memoir – draws powerful performances from a cast centered around Lucas Hedges (also noted lately for his work in “Ben Is Back”) as a minister’s (Russell Crowe) son whose lifestyle revelation makes him a subject of a conversion therapy program. Many of the scenes here are unsettling, but the efforts of Hedges, Edgerton and their colleagues are consistently riveting. Nicole Kidman and music star Troye Sivan also have major roles. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “HUNTER KILLER” This adventure wants to be another “Hunt for Red October” – or any Tom Clancy story, for that matter – but despite a good cast, it strays from the necessary course of being tight and tense. It spends considerable time aboard an American submarine commanded by Gerard Butler before we learn what its mission really is: to retrieve and protect the president of Russia, who’s been deposed in a military coup. First, though, Navy SEALS have to reach that leader and extract him. Filmed two years ago, when it clearly thought it was ahead of real-world results, the picture casts Caroline Goodall (“Schindler’s List”) as the U.S. president. Gary Oldman, actor-rapper Common, Toby Stephens (“Black Sails”), Linda Cardellini and the late Michael Nyqvist also star. DVD extras: “making-of” documentary; audio commentary by director Donovan Marsh. ››› (R: P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “KIDDING: SEASON ONE” Long after “The Duck Factory” and “In Living Color,” Jim Carrey has brought his seriocomic knack back to weekly television with this Showtime series. It reteams him with executive producer and director Michel Gondry – who called the shots on one of Carrey’s most acclaimed movies, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” – for the saga of Jeff Pickles, alias popular puppeteer “Mr. Pickles,” whose off-screen concerns penetrate his children’s show. Potential crises result for him and others including his estranged wife (Judy Greer), his executive producer (Frank Langella) and his chief puppet-maker (Catherine Keener). Carrey has scored recent award nominations for the program, created by “Weeds” alum Dave Holstein, which will be back for a second season. ››› (Not rated: AS, P) “SUSPIRIA” In an update of Dario Argento’s classic thriller, a dancer (Dakota Johnson, of “Fifty Shades” franchise fame) faces danger while working with a celebrated troupe in Berlin. She quickly impresses the company’s choreographer (Oscar winner Tilda Swinton) and advances rapidly to become the lead performer, but her predecessor alleges that the troupe’s leaders are witches – in the most literal sense. Still, the newcomer forms a strong bond with her mentor, even as horrors are discovered beneath the dance studio. Chloe Grace Moretz, who had a previous dose of terror in the title role of a “Carrie” remake, also is featured. DVD extras: three “making-of” documentaries. ››› (R: AS, N, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
