LEO
BY JAY BOBBIN Garth Brooks may not have a lot of “firsts” left to conquer, but a new special confirms that some remain. In October, the country-music icon performed the first live concert ever staged at the stadium of Indiana’s University of Notre Dame. CBS captured the event for “Garth: Live at Notre Dame!” Sunday, Dec. 2, featuring an ample dose of his hits – and serving as the warm-up for a 3-year stadium tour that also will involve his wife, fellow country star Trisha Yearwood, who joined him on a recordsetting 2014-17 world tour. Recalling that he was “scared to death” to leave the honky-tonks where he started his career and move to arenas as his popularity soared, the genial Brooks reflects, “How do you make playing to 85,000 people warm? Well, Notre Dame opened my eyes. It’s (the fans) who make it warm. All you’ve got to do is come play the songs they want to hear, and tell them how thankful you are, and they take care of the rest. “It was pretty cool,” adds Brooks. “Granted, (the stadium at) Notre Dame was built for music whether they knew it or not then. You sit in the middle, the acoustics are amazing, and everybody sings. It was just a phenomenal night ... cold as hell, but they didn’t care. Now, the secret is out:
Notre Dame is going to have to hide behind a tree, because everyone and their dog is going to want to play there. Something’s going on in the house that (Knute) Rockne built, and it’s a fun place to play.” Brooks recently released “Part III” of his “Anthology” series (also known as “Triple Live”), including such songs as “The Thunder Rolls” and “Friends in Low Places” recorded live during his last tour. He calls putting the CD set together “so much work,” compared to compiling cuts that already had the music properly mixed. “These were all from scratch, with 390 shows we had to pick from,” Brooks explains. “We’d see when (Mike) Palmer the drummer had his best nights, and what the crowd was like. Those were the two things – anything else, you can fix – but it was a labor of love.” Long known for the enormous success of his concerts, Brooks says it was “fabulous” to launch his next tour at Notre Dame “because there were sweet people there who would bend over backward for you, and it was perfect because there was no second or third tier. You may start at the 50-yard line, but then you move it down the field to the 25 or 30 (to get closer to other attendees). You sure see what works and what doesn’t.”
You’ll be able to do a lot of your work from home. If you have young children, one of them will need some extra attention this week. You need to clear the air with certain important people in order to rest easy.
VIRGO You’ll shop for a useful gadget that will make communicating easier and guarantee that you’re easier to reach. You’ll be on the road a lot this week, so don’t forget your GPS to avoid getting lost.
LIBRA You won’t spare any expense to impress people this holiday season; you’ll replace furniture and appliances. You’ll also get rid of things that were taking up too much space.
SCORPIO You’ll show initiative in an important project. You’ll give orders to make sure that people understand the direction you want to go in. Your leadership will be sought afterwards.
SAGITTARIUS If you’ve been feeling run down lately, take time to recharge and rethink your goals. People you love have been missing you lately, so give them a call and organize a reunion.
CAPRICORN You’ll find yourself in a crowded place. It looks like an event you’re planning will draw a big group of people. Say yes to invitations from your friends and let loose to relieve some stress.
AQUARIUS Sometimes you need to take a step back to be able to see things in a new way. You’ll find the solutions you’ve been looking for if you analyze the problem with a new perspective.
PISCES You’ll have good luck professionally and in your love life. You’ll cross paths with people who will make your life easier. Your sensitivity is a superpower that you’ll use to your benefit.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Morgan Freeman’s Top 10BYMovies JAY BOBBIN “Invictus” (2009): Working again with director Clint Eastwood, Freeman is very credible as then-South African President Nelson Mandela. “The Bucket List” (2007): Freeman and Jack Nicholson do likable and effective work as cancer patients trying to fulfill their remaining wishes. “Million Dollar Baby” (2004): Freeman was directed to an Oscar by Eastwood, who also plays his fighter-training cohort, in a moving drama that also brought Hilary Swank an Academy Award. “Bruce Almighty” (2003): He may not be what you expected the Deity to be like, but Freeman is a lot of fun as the heavenly being who gives a disgruntled reporter (Jim Carrey) amazing powers. “Se7en” (1995): Freeman is the ideal ballast to Brad Pitt, playing the latter’s partner in seeking a killer who patterns his crimes after the Seven Deadly Sins.
“The Shawshank Redemption” (1994): One of Freeman’s most iconic performances fuels this adaptation of Stephen King’s story about a deep friendship forged in prison. “Unforgiven” (1992): In his first teaming with director and fellow star Eastwood, Freeman adds much heart to a grim Western. “Driving Miss Daisy” (1989): A new chapter in Freeman’s career was opened by the determination of producers Richard D. Zanuck and Lili Fini Zanuck as he reprised his stage role as the patient chauffeur of a feisty Southerner (Jessica Tandy). “Lean on Me” (1989): An excellent Freeman plays Joe Clark, a real-life inner-city principal determined to improve conditions at his school. “Glory” (1989): Freeman’s supportingactor phase largely ended with this superb drama about a Civil War unit.

Disney fantasy revises ‘The Nutcracker’ A big element that has kept the Tchaikovsky-scored ballet “The Nutcracker” such a holiday-season tradition is its simple pleasures, known both from live productions and past films that basically have trained cameras on the stage versions and just let them roll. Disney now tries to go several steps beyond that with “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” which takes the basic elements of the piece and expands on them in a massive way. If you’ve never seen “The Nutcracker,” you’ll probably find the result more acceptable than if you know and love the original work, since this expands on it to a fault. A Victorian youngster played by Mackenzie Sissy Spacek Foy loses her mother, then reluctantly goesand Robert Redford to a Christmas gala where her toymaker godfather – Morgan Freeman, who’s shown the touch of God on the screen before – magically sends her into those other realms, where she encounters such “Nutcracker” staples as soldiers and mice. They’re not quite as simplistic as in the classic presentation, though, which is why it’s advisable for anyone getting their first dose of “The Nutcracker” here to also seek out a staging of its inspiration. Indeed, it seems like there isn’t an opportunity for lavish special effects here that’s passed up ... the catch being that “The Nutcracker” doesn’t need them. It’s an enchanting effort all by itself, without the help of modern technicians. It’s as if Disney doesn’t trust that to be the case, so everything but the kitchen sink is thrown in visually. (Actually, come to think of it, the kitchen sink might be in there.) Sure, the
“MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT” While doing his promotional rounds for this picture, Tom Cruise said he just wanted to give the audience its money’s worth – and does he ever this time. result may well dazzle young viewers – which is exactly what Disney appears to be going for here. For that, they may as well just see “A Wrinkle in Time” or any number of other recent releases from the studio, which get the same job done without messing around with a genuinely timeless piece. Helen Mirren, Keira Knightley, Richard E. Grant and (way too briefly) ballet star Misty Copeland also turn up in “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” ... which was handled by not one but two accomplished directors, Lasse Hallstrom (“The Cider House Rules”) and Joe Johnston (“Jumanji”). However, for all the obvious effort, sometimes simpler is better. Though the movie largely achieves what it sets out to do, “The Nutcracker” without the four realms is still just fine, too.
writer-director Christopher Jamie Lee Curtis McQuarrie. The picture not only offers a jaw-dropping series of action sequences, it does a deep dive into the personhood of IMF agent Ethan Hunt, as those closest to him face threats of very bad things from an enemy. That alternately sways and doesn’t sway Hunt from his mission to stop the theft of plutonium, to be used on very specifically chosen targets. Henry Cavill also
stars as a CIA “frenemy,” and back as well are Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Alec Baldwin and others, with great additions in steely Angela Bassett and lethal Vanessa Kirby. However, this mission chiefly is owned by Cruise – and you’ll be very glad he chose to accept it. (PG-13: P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
