What’s New NOW on February 25 “Dolphin Tale 2” This 2014 sequel to the hit 2011 family movie “Dolphin Tale” finds Dr. Clay Haskett (Harry Connick Jr.) and the rest of the team at Clearwater Marine Hospital scrambling to find a new finny companion for Winter after her surrogate dolphin mother dies. If they can’t find a replacement within 30 days, Winter will be shipped off to another aquarium. Most of the main players from the original film, including Ashley Judd, Nathan Gamble and Kris Kristofferson, rejoin Connick for this sequel. February 26 “Our Idiot Brother” Paul Rudd has the less-than-glorified title role in this 2011 comedy carried largely by the skill of its cast. Newly paroled, the not very street-wise sibling seeks shelter with each of his three sisters (Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer), invariably causing complications for them with his unaffected and relentlessly honest approach to life. At least to the ladies, such complete honesty often is not the best policy. Rashida Jones co-stars. March 1 “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” From first-time director Chiwetel Ejiofor comes this original 2019 drama about a Malawian boy who builds a wind turbine to save his village and family from famine. Agnes Kamkwamba, Maxwell Simba and Ejiofor head the cast. (ORIGINAL) Premiere “Studio 54” Matt Tyrnauer (“Citizen Jane: Battle for the City”) directed this 2018 documentary that tells the behind-the-scenes story of the iconic 1970s New York night club and how it came to symbolize the hedonism of its era, with everyone from Hollywood stars and political movers and shakers among its clients. Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Roy Cohn, Jack Benny and Walter Cronkite appear in archival footage.

Coming Soon “The Highwaymen” (March 29) John Lee Hancock (“The Blind Side”) directed this crime drama about two detectives who came out of retirement to track down Bonnie and Clyde. Woody Harrelson, Kevin Costner and Kathy Bates head a formidable cast. (ORIGINAL) “Our Planet” (April 5) From the makers of “Planet Earth” comes this eightpart series that explores the wonders of our natural world. David Attenborough narrates. (ORIGINAL) “Brotherhood” (date TBA) A lawyer is coerced into becoming an informant against her convict brother in this ‘90s-set thriller. (ORIGINAL) “Raising Dion” (date TBA) A woman notices her young son exhibiting superhero-like abilities in the wake of her husband’s death in this sci-fi/ drama series. (ORIGINAL)

WEEK OF MARCH 3 TO 9, 2019 THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: TAURUS, GEMINI AND CANCER

ARIES After a period of intense stress, it’s important to step back and relax. Take some time to rejuvenate and make a fresh start.

TAURUS You’ll work overtime this week. Luckily, you’ll also have some time off to have fun with your loved ones, who’ll invite you to join their activities.

GEMINI Whether it’s a big vacation or a short romantic getaway, you’ll have your head in the clouds planning your next trip. You’ll even consider going abroad for an adventure.

CANCER Some changes are necessary and with good reason. Cleaning up your circle of friends will relieve some stress and allow you to be happier in your life.

LEO This week could bring about some strong emotions. Don’t put yourself in the position of making all the decisions because it may lead to criticism from others.

‘Dexters’ Jennifer Carpenter now fights ‘The Enemy Within’ In her most famous role to date, “Dexter’s” Debra, Jennifer Carpenter often was hilariously profane ... but not this time. Here’s why: Her new series is for broadcast television, and her latest character doesn’t have much to be amusing about. Premiering Monday, Feb. 25, NBC’s intense “The Enemy Within” casts Carpenter as an ex-CIA agent sentenced to life in prison for treason. She’s also the only person able to solve the dilemma facing an FBI agent (Morris Chestnut), who has to manage his personal agenda against her when she’s released to help find a lethal criminal she’s very familiar with. “Everything that has led up to this certainly informs Erica Shepherd,” Carpenter confirms of her new alter ego. “She was the deputy director of the FBI, so she was the eyes and ears of the information that was going to be threaded through the most powerful players in America. It’s not a laughing matter, and it is a fight for her life – so it’s a heavy responsibility. “In a strange way, from having so much experience from eight years on a cable show, (‘The Enemy Within’) feels comparable to working in an environment like that,” Carpenter maintains. “(With) the subject matter and the caliber of actors and writers and directors that we’re working with, it really feels like it challenges an audience in

VIRGO You’ll have to elbow your way in to get where you want to be so don’t be afraid to speak up if you need to. You’ll be offered the chance to travel and discover new cultures.

a way that they deserve to be challenged, because TV has changed the way it has in the last 10 years.” “The Enemy Within” also stars Raza Jaffrey (“Smash,” “Code Black”), Kelli Garner (“The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe”), Cassandra Freeman (“Marvel’s Luke Cage”) and Noah Mills (who had the same Monday time slot on NBC last season with “The Brave”). Carpenter’s last post-“Dexter” series was CBS’ expansion of the movie “Limitless,” and reentering the weekly TV world requires certain sacrifices from her. “To be a working actor means you have to agree to live the life of a gypsy,” she reflects. “We go where the work is. And now, I have a family (including husband Seth Avett, of music’s Avett Brothers), and it meant moving once again from North Carolina to New York. And the second I was offered the opportunity, I was like, ‘Pack the kitchen. Here we go.’ “I knew it was going to be a make-or-break moment,” Carpenter says. “I mean, I wanted to attack it like an athlete. I wanted to get the win and make the show what I sensed that it could be, and what I felt like I heard it was trying to be from the pilot. I want to look back at the end of this season and think that we played a really good game.”

You’ll be a key figure among your colleagues and circle of friends. All these people can offer a helping hand when you’re ready to make some changes.

SCORPIO If you invite loved ones into your home, don’t expect them to offer help. They may even want to be waited on. Luckily, you have lots of fun doing it.

SAGITTARIUS You’ll come across people who are all talk, no action. Don’t be fooled by those who don’t know what they’re talking about. Follow your instincts; they won’t lead you astray.

CAPRICORN You probably appreciate the stability and financial independence that your job brings you. Your salary gives you the opportunity to travel and go on adventures.

AQUARIUS You’ll be full of ideas and initiatives. It’s possible that your habit of changing plans depending on your mood could irritate the people around you.

PISCES There could be some confusion at the beginning of the week. Luckily, all it takes is a second cup of coffee to regain your focus and make small miracles happen.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January 29 and addressed to Mueller

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,

Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

“Interstellar” (2014): Director Christopher Nolan’s challenging and very emotional scifi drama casts McConaughey as a farmer turned astronaut who travels across time and space via a wormhole. “Dallas Buyers Club” (2013): McConaughey was a shoo-in for the Oscar he won for his transformational portrayal of an AIDS patient. “Magic Mike” (2012): A lot of McConaughey is on view as he plays the mentor of a male stripper portrayed by Channing Tatum, whose actual experiences the film is based on. “Mud” (2012): McConaughey gets down and dirty, in multiple ways, as a Southern fugitive who convinces two teens to help him. “The Lincoln Lawyer” (2011): An effective McConaughey plays a defense attorney representing a felony-accused playboy (Ryan Phillippe). “We Are Marshall” (2006): McConaughey is excellent in this true drama as the new football coach at a university that lost his predecessor and the team in a plane crash. “U-571” (2000): McConaughey is topbilled in a sterling ensemble in the fact-based story of Allied troops who overtake a Nazi U-boat. “Amistad” (1997): Tackling the law again, McConaughey also tackles history as an attorney involved in the trial over a slave-ship rebellion. “Contact” (1997): As an author with differing ideas, McConaughey lends solid support to Jodie Foster, who plays an astronomer certain she has located extraterrestrial life. “A Time to Kill” (1996): A John Grisham novel provided McConaughey’s breakthrough role, a lawyer representing the vengeful father (Samuel L. Jackson) of an assault victim.

McConaughey and Hathaway reunite to seek ‘Serenity’ “Serenity” already has had a movie workout, as the name of the big-screen version of the sci-fi series “Firefly.” The newer film with that title prides itself on putting forth plot twist upon plot twist – to the extent that it risks becoming a parody of itself. It also makes it challenging to say too much about story details, since a lot of what you think it is turns out to be not that at all. At least it’s fair to mention the picture’s starting point, a variation on “The Postman Always Rings Twice” and “Body Heat,” with Matthew McConaughey as a down-on-his luck charterboat operator whose ex-wife (Anne Hathaway, who also worked with McConaughey in “Interstellar”) wants to pay him a fortune to kill the man she’s married to now (Jason Clarke). A straightforward premise, right? Well, wait: Writer and director Steven Knight can’t resist the impulse to keep changing up “Serenity” (the name of the boat, as it was for the “Firefly” spaceship) – and though he obviously has a solid cast that also includes Diane Lane, Jeremy Strong and Djimon Hounsou, the actors can do only so much with material that isn’t solid enough to keep you from becoming impatient with it. That’s the very big catch with a movie like this. It can’t merely be trickery for trickery’s sake, there has to be a certain code that the characters play by and stick to ... even if it’s an amoral one. Mess with that too much, and the audience feels fooled, and not in the satisfying way that such films as “The Sting” and “The Sixth Sense” pulled off. McConaughey eases his way through the type of role that fits him like a relaxed glove – the sort he was handed more often than not before his Oscar-winning work in “Dallas Buyers Club” reaffirmed the acting depths he could go to. Hathaway has it tougher here; her screen history suggests she can do virtually anything, but the femme fatale she’s asked to play is out of her wheelhouse. She tries, but the problem is that she looks like she’s trying, rather than occupying the part as Matthew McConaughey naturally as moviegoers are used to from Michael B. Jordan her. Jamie Lee Curtis

“RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET” Voiced again by John C. Reilly, the title character from Disney’s “Wreck-It Ralph” is back to wreak havoc anew in this amusing sequel, an Oscar nominee for best animated feature. Ralph and his friend Vanellope (voiced by fellow returnee Sarah Silverman) try to restore the video game Sugar Rush to glory by traveling the World Wide Web to find a needed replacement part, but Ralph fears he may lose Vanellope when she’s drawn to a sleeker online game that she discovers. Gal Gadot (“Wonder Woman”) joins the vocal cast, as does Taraji P. Henson – with Jane Lynch, Jack McBrayer, Alan Tudyk and Ed O’Neill also heard again. DVD extras: music videos. ››› (PG: AS) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

“MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS” Week of February 24

ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL PG-13, 2 hr 2 min Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi/Fantasy

HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U PG-13, 1 hr 40 min Comedy, Horror, Suspense/Thriller

ISN’T IT ROMANTIC PG-13, 1 hr 28 min Comedy, Sci-Fi/Fantasy

COLD PURSUIT R, 1 hr 58 min Action/Adventure

Filmed previously in 1971, the true saga of two female monarchs and their rivalry gets fresh treatment and powerful acting from Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie as Mary Stuart and Queen Elizabeth I in a version written by someone who knows from political intrigue ... Beau Willimon, who developed “House of Cards” for American television. Though Elizabeth occupies the throne of England, that’s in question when her cousin Mary asserts her own power to rule Scotland and consider a coup against her British counterpart. Male principals in the cast include Guy Pearce, David Tennant, Adrian Lester and Joe Alwyn. The film has Oscar nominations for costume design, makeup and hairstyling. ››› (R: AS, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “THE POSSESSION OF HANNAH GRACE” Shay Mitchell has had a big post-“Pretty Little Liars” round in recent months, with a featured part in the first season of “You” and the principal role in this melodrama about a troubled ex-cop turned late-shift hospital-morgue worker. That set-up is just built for chills, and those arrive as she finds herself locked inside the facility with the newly arrived body of Hannah Grace (Kirby Johnson) ... which may be, as the film’s title suggests, possessed. Co-stars include Grey Damon (“Station 19”), Stana Katic (“Castle”) and Louis Herthum (“Westworld”). DVD extras: two “making-of” documentaries; deleted scene. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “DYNASTIES”

PG, 1 hr 47 min Action/Adventure, Animated, Comedy

On the heels of its telecasts on BBC America and several other corporately related networks, this nature miniseries focuses on one family in each of five species that are endangered: lions, chimpanzees, tigers, painted wolves and Emperor penguins. They use various means in their respective quests for survival, forging alliances in others in some cases, but engaging in all-out battles in others. Sir David Attenborough, a veteran of such projects, presents the program. ››› (Not rated) (Also on Blu-ray)

THE PRODIGY (2019)

“BETWEEN WORLDS”

R, 1 hr 40 min Horror, Suspense/Thriller

Since his Oscar win almost 25 years ago for “Leaving Las Vegas,” Nicolas Cage’s career has been a mixed bag, sometimes delving into science-fiction and the supernatural. He returns to those genres with this melodrama, casting him as a trucker unable to come to terms with the deaths of his wife and daughter. He gets to experience his late spouse again, but in a decidedly unusual way, since her spirit possesses a young woman who emerges from a coma. Franka Potente (“The Bourne Identity”) plays the girl’s mother, with actress-model Lydia Hearst also featured. ›› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART

WHAT MEN WANT R, 1 hr 57 min Comedy, Romance

MISS BALA (2019) PG-13, 1 hr 44 min Action/Adventure, Suspense/Thriller

GLASS (2019) PG-13, 2 hr 9 min Drama, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Suspense/Thriller

THE UPSIDE

“THE DEAD ZONE: THE COMPLETE SERIES” After inspiring a popular movie, the Stephen King best-seller also became the source of a USA Network show that had a healthy six-season run, and did much to help Anthony Michael Hall move beyond his ‘80s-teen-movie image. He plays Johnny Smith, who awakens from a car-accident-caused coma with psychic abilities – and without his fiancee (Nicole de Boer), who married the local sheriff (Chris Bruno) during Johnny’s long stretch of unconsciousness. The late David Ogden Stiers (“M›A›S›H”) appears frequently as a priest Johnny often has doubts about. Jennifer Finnigan (“Salvation”), Sean Patrick Flanery and Sarah Wynter (“24”) also have recurring roles. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V)

PG-13, 2 hr 6 min Comedy

ESCAPE ROOM (2019) PG-13, 1 hr 40 min Action/Adventure, Horror, Suspense/Thriller

AQUAMAN PG-13, 2 hr 23 min Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi/Fantasy

SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE PG, 1 hr 57 min Action/Adventure, Animated, Comedy
