Many of the names – starting with the title – and some of the theme music will be familiar to fans of a 1970s action series. Originally made by TV mega-producer Aaron Spelling and current “Blue Bloods” supplier Leonard Goldberg, the police drama “S.W.A.T.” gets a CBS reboot starting Thursday, Nov. 2. “Criminal Minds” alum Shemar Moore assumes Steve Forrest’s earlier role as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, leader of an elite Special Weapons and Tactics Team ... but the new incarnation of the character often is torn, having to play cop (literally) on the Los Angeles streets where he grew up. Those who know the original show – which inspired a Samuel L. Jackson-starring 2003 movie, too – also will recognize the names of officers Jim Street (Alex Russell, succeeding Robert Urich), “Deacon” Kay (Jay Harrington, in Rod Perry’s ’70s part) and Dom Luca (“The Shield’s” Kenny Johnson, taking over from Mark Shera). Stephanie Sigman, who shared the lengthy single-camera opening sequence of “Spectre” with Daniel Craig’s James Bond, and Lina Esco (“Kingdom”) star as well. Along with filmmaker Justin Lin (“Fast & Furious”), the executive producers of “S.W.A.T.” include Shawn Ryan, the mentor of the gritty, aforementioned “The Shield.” He maintains the way to do “S.W.A.T.” now is “honestly, and in a grounded way. I think the characters are heroes, and I think you can be pro-police and yet also be pro-truth, but there are certain instances and times and events that shouldn’t happen. They came to me. It was toward the end of Season 4 (of “Scorpion”), and I got the script and started reading it when we were shooting out in Malibu. It was very different than the script we ended up shooting with, because Yves Simoneau – the director – and myself and Daniel Gillies (who plays Durst) got together for a solid week and just tweaked the whole script. That was a really refreshing thing to do, because in TV, you usually don’t have the time to do that. There’s something really artistic and fulfilling about diving into a script and having that kind of freedom.

The image most of us have of Edgar Allan Poe is that of a wild-haired, wild-eyed, drug-addled madman who happened to be responsible for some of the most iconic poems and short stories in American literature. But the truth about Poe is quite different, and it’s explored in the “American Masters” documentary “Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive,” premiering Monday, Oct. 30, on PBS (check local listings). The 90-minute presentation tells the story of a young man who struggled with poverty, alcoholism and depression and discovered his literary bent as a teen with the collection “Tamerlane and Other Poems” and hit his stride in his 20s and 30s with such horror masterpieces as “The Raven,” “The Telltale Heart” and “The Pit and the Pendulum.” When he died under mysterious circumstances at age 40 in 1849, a writer named Rufus Griswold penned an obituary in the New York Tribune aimed at destroying the reputation of his literary rival, painting Poe as a womanizing drunk and drug addict (which was later proven to be false) and a lunatic, a caricatured image that persists to this day. Emmy-nominated actor Denis O’Hare (“This Is Us,” “Charlie Wilson’s War”) fairly disappears into the skin of Poe, depicting him as a troubled but talented writer and magazine editor who was determined to reinvent American literature. “He’s a wonderfully complicated, contradictory person,” the actor explains, “and I remember a section where he was invited to a drawing

room party in New York because he was such an amazing guest. He would come. He was courtly. He was polite. He ... wouldn’t bore anybody. He was charismatic. “People talk about the intensity in his eyes,” he continues, “and then he would get drunk and he would create a scandal and he would cause a scene and insult somebody and be barred for a year. So he was the best possible guest, you know, the best possible kind of controversial guest that you want. Kind of like Justin Bieber meets, I don’t know, somebody else ... Bret Easton Ellis.” To create Poe, O’Hare did plenty of research, although he was already very familiar with the man and his work from childhood. He also found it helpful to approximate the writer’s physicality, which he says went beyond merely donning a costume, growing a mustache and wearing a wig. “You just tweaked the eyebrows a little bit, and you get that constantly worried, anxious look that was sort of his hallmark,” he says. “He’s an extraordinary-looking person. The way he photographed was, I thought, revelatory. You can see the haunted aspect in his eyes. I think that’s just crazy. So I hoped to emulate rather than impersonate.”

Throwing a Halloween party? ‘The Property Brothers’ have a few ideas If you really want to get “Property Brothers” Jonathan and Drew Scott talking, ask them about Halloween. It’s a holiday the twin HGTV stars are passionate about, having celebrated it since childhood with elaborate parties, imaginative costumes and wellthought-out decor designed to scare the living daylights out of any who dare to visit them on Oct. 31. In fact, they’ve even built numerous haunted houses, including one on the Brooklyn Bridge at the New York-New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. “Maybe we’re Halloween snobs, I don’t know,” Jonathan Scott says. “We believe that if it’s a Halloween party, it is mandatory that you are in costume. That’s why, whenever we throw something, we say to folks, ‘Be creative, be fun, let loose.’ Last year, for example, my girlfriend and I hosted a ‘Stranger Things’ Halloween party. And it was really fun using the string lights to do like what they had in the show when they could tell when the spirits were coming. And then it’s all about a number of things. You have to have themed food, themed drinks. The décor can be quite simple.” The food needn’t be fancy, they say, but it should be bite-size and shareable. For example, if finger foods are on the menu, why not make them look like actual fingers? This can be accomplished by cooking small sausages or wieners and cutting semicircular bits out of the tips to resemble nail beds. That might earn a few double takes. For drinks, you can come up with your own themed concoctions, find plentiful ideas on the web or simply

add a few simple but spooky touches to conventional cocktails, such as dry ice to give that vodka tonic the look of an evil potion. “We’ve done dry ice,” Jonathan says. “You know, like if you have a martini where you have an olive in the glass, you basically can skin a grape or you do something so it looks like an eye. Like you have little touches that it just gives it that extra spooky flair.” The Halloween table can have different levels and textures with plenty of oranges and blacks and fake cobwebs. You can even have a separate candy table for the kids. And then there is the obligatory Halloween cake. “Always make it something fun for the kids, something visual.” Drew Scott says, “Visual is always an important part of Halloween. Like last year I did a giant spider cake but the spider broke up into miniature spiders within. And then down the side of the table, we actually had all these fake spiders that were on a web all the way down. And so it’s just creating that spooky atmosphere.” Above all, the brothers stress that you don’t have to go to great expense or trouble to put on a successful Halloween party. But they say a little imagination can go a long way in impressing your guests. “They’ll be amazed at how authentic it feels and how much work you put into it ,” Jonathan says, “but in reality it’s very, very easy to look like you’ve thrown this amazing Halloween party.”

In 1971, Kathie, a dental hygienist, is swept off her feet by Durst’s eccentric charm, but their marriage takes some disturbing turns as time passes. When Kathie vanishes in 1982, her family and friends are dismayed that police don’t seem willing to take her disappearance very seriously.
