id you know Underground MMA Submission is a combat sport offered at OHS? Although it is not accredited as a class, this club is made possible with special thanks to Campus officer and coach Robert Moreno who works tirelessly, training his kids to their full potential. “You know some people know about it, some people don’t, Underground MMA has been going on for nine years and it has been something that is especially unique, offered only here at Ontario High” states Moreno. This club is no joke. “We traveled to Las Vegas and fought in Mandalay Bay, we’ve fought at the MGM and at other major venues and won. I’ve had over 12 champions!” states Moreno. Former student, Andrew Walle has even brought home the title of advanced UFC champion in Submission fighting and ranked number twelve in the Nation for Jiu Jitsu Submission. Moreno comments, “You know our sport isn’t like football where the rallies recognize us, so it was kind of tough on Andrew because he was a champion but no one really knew, because it wasn’t promoted.” With such grand accomplishments it is uncanny to wonder why this club does not get the recognition they work so hard for.
In this male-dominated sport, girls in Moreno’s team have also shown they can compete just as well, if not better. When it came to former student Zanely Ramirez, Moreno Comments, “...she was so good she won all the tournaments we went to. I honestly think she could have gave Ronda Rousey a run for her money and that’s no joke.” Currently, there are only three girls on the MMA team, however, gender is not seen as a factor when it comes to the ability and willingness to compete on the team. “These are some of the most hard working and dedicated kids...the only thing I ask of the kids is they work hard and always try to be better than they were yesterday. My program is open to everybody and I mean everybody. We find a spot for them and make it happen so by the time they leave our program they feel good about themselves knowing they can accomplish anything they set their mind to.” The major achievements and competitions won by this club can no longer go unnoticed. If Underground MMA sparked an interest in you, speak to officer Moreno and be a part of the team.

t Ontario High, we have a student whose artwork is not only displayed here, but also at the Chaffey Art Museum, fairly close to home. The jag’s name is Victoria Hung, a very talented artist. Hung’s Studio Art teacher, Mrs. Biden, recommended her art to be featured at the museum. Every artist, at every level, has something that they are well known for. For Hung, that is charcoal paintings.

ohsjagwire.org
Hung’s artwork got a lot of feedback since then. Hung has even had some people offer to buy her artwork. “[I felt surprised] because people actually wanted to buy my artwork,” said Hung. Hung is shy and level-headed but does not let major events of recognition or publicity get to her head. Art affects us in different ways. For some, it is just something pretty to look at. For others, like Hung, it is their outlet for creativity.

editorial: What are they not teaching?

or 3 years, I have been playing a crucial part in my district, appointing my thoughts and ideas on how money should be distributed among all the high schools in the Chaffey Joint Union High School District. Being a part of the Local Control and Accountability Plans has helped me realize the limitation of power within schools. Money is power. There is only a certain amount of money to work with and the governing board of each school district adopts this accountability plan (LCAP) using a template adopted by the State Board which generally means there are sections of money that must go to a certain group. It became clear when data was presented to the meetings that I was never taught this and never quite grasped how intense the methods of spending money involving the students of my community was. Our district now has valuable opportunities for their rising students such as investing money in partnerships with universities, partnering with industries to offer internships with a secure spot and with our knowledge of what money the district has, it is possible that a Spanish speaking based college preparation program could make its way into our schools. Financial literacy is something we can all benefit from at all stages of our lives. From saving for your first a car to getting by
in retirement, many individuals today are feeling extreme financial anxiety, because they do not know how to manage their funds.Financial literacy is an essential skill and is necessary in our everyday lives. We may not notice it or work the numbers, but everywhere we go, we need to understand the concept of financial literacy. How do we spend our money? What knowledge do you have that will enable certain decisions? It is important to know your stance and work with budgets, bills and basically anything with a dollar sign. In today’s on-going consumer society, it is important to have financial literacy. Often, mteenagers are left to figure things out on their own. Unfortunately, Ontario High School and others in the district do not offer financial literacy in our classrooms. A well-informed consumer is critical to a stable economy. Financial literacy requires young and old minds to think. Financial literacy is not only questioning how you make money and what you spend it on but also how to spend it, which is a skill that should be taught at our schools. Most adults still do not understand how to manage money. Understanding the power of money is important.

ntario Fury kicked off their official 2015-2016 season against Tijuana native, Atletico Baja, with over 3,302 spectators in attendance at the Citizens Business Bank Arena. Before the game started, Ontario High School junior Hugo Ramos sang the Mexican national anthem and the “Star Spangled Banner”, an incredible prologue to an intense game. Although Fury quickly scored three goals in the beginning, Baja fought back after a quarter tie, taking the lead. However, with 1:50 minutes remaining in regulation, Fury disguised Kylie Couch as a goalkeeper to score the goal to take the game to overtime. Ontario Fury won 7-6. The game ended after a goal from Tino Nunez was shot from center, ending the game with 8:17 minutes. After the game, Fury defensive player Joey Pacheco stated,“We were a little rusty but I was glad that we could pull together as a team and bottom line is that we got the victory at the end of the day.” The Ontario Fury will play away against Soles de Sonora in Mexico on November 14.

Let Girls Learn BRISA ESCARENO Staff writer
T
he First Lady, Michelle Obama, has recently announced a new multi-million dollar global program to get more girls involved in education. This campaign is a government wide effort that will bring education to young girls around the world. This campaign is propelled by successful individuals who are seeking to give back to girls in need of education all over the world. The goal of this campaign is to help girls achieve an excellent education in order to help them become intelligent and independent women who are able to succeed in the world. While in the U.S., there is an opportunity for girls to learn, unfortunately, that is not possible for many girls all over the world. Let Girls Learn helps girls around the world receive a proper education and places an importance on education equality. To educate a girl is to achieve a stronger community and a brighter future. A girl with an education can shape her own destiny, lift up her family, and transform her community; therefore, Let Girls Learn is now an opportunity for girls in poverty to take advantage of to get an education. Michelle Obama empowers young women to focus on what they are passionate about. She states, "...I'm passionate about the 62 million girls.” She encourages young girls to “start
with whatever issue moves them.” She wants these girls to have hope and to work hard to change their future. Despite the fact that some of these girls have had a past that has left them feeling heartbroken, angry and overwhelmed, they are determined to move on and build a brighter future for the world through the power of education. Sometimes, we do not realize how lucky we are to have an education. These girls want an education. They are willing to succeed, while also remaining determined to overcome any obstacles. The young women who are supported by this campaign are working hard to make a change not just in their life, but in their families. The hard work they put into their education has people wanting to volunteer to help them reach success. Although this campaign is increasing, a leverage to investments is being made to make the dreams of these young women come true. The fight to get girls around the world an education may be a challenge, but it is definitely worth fighting for. In the words of the First Lady, “We can approach this issue, one school, one village, one girl at a time...That's how you make change in this world.”

3D Bioprinting requires a 3D printer software to build a model of the organ they need to recreate. Bio-ink is then used to create the actual organ, layer by layer. Bio-ink is simply what it states, biological ink. It is made out of living cells that behave as a liquid and are used in 3D printers to create any organ anyone desires (wisegeek.com). Many companies have worked hard to make this a possibility and have made several advances. In San Diego, California, a company by the name ALICIA GOVEA of Organovo has been involved in the Editor research of this project for quite a while. Sometimes you get lucky, other times not so much. But just imagine a world where no one struggles while waiting for a compatible organ because they already have one made from their own cells. What a world it would be where failed organs are no longer an issue. It Sounds like a dream, but most dreams end when reality hits. Everything in the world costs money. So the real question is this: will we (members of the working class) be able to afford an artificial organ? Or will this dream only become a reality for the 6% that make over $150,000 a year? To put it in perspective 3ders.org states that an organ can cost anywhere between $500 and $1500 to create; however, the actual printer can vary in cost between $250,000 and $500,000, thus increasing the cost of the organ. And we cannot forget about the cost of the surgery itself! Then there is the recovery process and the medicines. An organ coming from a donor can cost anywhere between 10 to 60 thousand dollars. o, it is not a sport you play on the field. It is the sport of competitive learning and distinguished students participate in it. Academic Decathlon is an academic competition where high school students participate in seven competitive multiple choice tests, two performance events and an essay. According to the United States Academic Decathlon website, each high school enters a team of nine students: 3 Honors or “A” students, 3 Scholastic “B” students and 3 Varsity “C or below” students. These students then begin to study a new theme. This year’s theme is India, and participants compete against local high schools to win. Winning could lead to scholarships, individual and team medals, and school recognition. The perks of being on Academic decathlon are endless. For example, Junior Gabriel Sanchez states, “It gives [me] more knowledge, for example, of India, and it gives us better speaking skills since we have to do a speech portion of the competition.” Needless to say, student participants study regularly on the
subject and attend morning and after school practice sessions. The learning can range from the music of India, to the culture and Economics. As competition gets closer, the participants are prepared to win. Justin Bolanos, Junior, states “I like it, it is pretty nice. I like to know about different subjects.” The beginning of the Academic Decathlon season is soon to begin and promises bring many surprises this year.
Academic Decathlon is currently accepting new members. See Mr. McConnell in room 129.

bsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a psychological illness, anxiety disorder, characterized by obsessions (recurring and obsessive thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive and ritualized behaviors the person urges to perform). There are different categories of people with ObsessiveCompulsive Disorder: “Washers” are afraid of contamination. They usually have cleaning or hand-washing compulsions. “Checkers” repeatedly check things (oven turned off, door locked, etc.) that they associate with harm or danger. “Doubters and sinners” are afraid that if everything is not perfect or done just right something terrible will happen, or they will be punished. “Counters and arrangers” are obsessed with order and symmetry. They may have superstitions about certain numbers, colors, or arrangements. “Hoarders” fear that something bad will happen if they throw anything away. They compulsively hoard things that they do not need or use. (Help guide) While researchers have not identified the causes for OCD, there is evidence that genetics can affect the development of the disorder. Medical researchers do know that OCD is triggered by communication problems between the brain’s deeper structures and the front part of the brain. These need Serotonin to communicate, which is why an increase of levels of Serotonin in the brain
can help alleviate OCD symptoms. OCD is a disabling illness and many citizens can be impaired by it, such as social skills and many more, it is also more common than schizophrenia. OCD has a much earlier age of onset compared to depression, typical onset for OCD is in young adulthood, half of the cases of OCD start at the age 19 meanwhile half of the cases of depression start at the age of 32. But be careful of using the term OCD flippantly. “‘Obsessive’ is a personality trait. It does not get in the way of your functioning, it is something you prefer. What people are meaning to say is, ‘I am obsessive rather than OCD,’ ” says Jeff Szymanski, executive director of the International OCD Foundation. “You’re now mixing a distressing psychological disorder with a personality preference, and when you mix them, you lose the severity of the disorder.” Approximately 3.3 million people in the United States suffer from OCD. Which 0.3 to 1% of pediatric population and 2% of adult population. Almost 51 percent of the cases are critical. Patients with OCD can be treated, when they first start they enter an acute treatment stage, which is mostly focused on stopping the episode. Once treatment is successful, they enter maintenance treatment, which focuses on preventing further episodes. Therapy and medication are some of the treatments. Some people say they have OCD without thinking that it is a very severe mental illness and without getting much recognition or enough awareness as it should.

editorial: sat scores scandal CARLOS RIVERA Editor
S
tudents who plan on attending a four-year university know that they must take the SAT; therefore, they try multiple tactics of studying to get a higher score. Once they receive their scores, they are able to see how well or how poorly they did on a certain section; however, the scores the SAT provides may be inaccurate. When you take the SAT you must fill out the demographic information which includes providing your name, address, birth date, ethnicity, etc. Filling out the front page correctly alone rewards you with 100 points. Subtract 100 points from your overall score and that is the score you should have received. Also, when you bubble in your ethnicity, whether that be African-American, Hispanic/Latino or Asian-American, you are either granted more points or points are deducted from your overall score. That is very unfair to those students who stay up for hours
studying, trying to earn a high score which they can send to colleges and to represent their eligibility compared to the students who do not study for this test and just expect to get a good score. Whether you are African-American, Hispanic/Latino or Asian-American, points should not be given or taken away based on the ethnicity bubble you fill in. It is absurd to know how many points are given or taken away based on your ethnicity. According to an LA Times article, “For Asian Americans, a changing landscape on college admissions,” African-Americans are given a “bonus” of 230 points. Hispanics/ Latinos are given a “bonus” of 185 points. On the other hand, Asian-Americans are penalized with a deduction of 50 points from their overall score. Do the math and figure out what your overall original score was before they added or subtracted the points for your race.
Illegal tweets MICHAEL NGUYEN Staff writer
Y
ou have probably seen it on Twitter or on Instagram, but if you have not, there are images floating around that display humorous jokes based on information that was on the PSAT which is the prep SAT exam. It raised concerns because before the students took the test, they were required to sign a document stating that the discussion of any form of information on the test was forbidden. Students knew throughout the whole test that disclosing any of the details of the test was illegal, yet they chose to create memes or a picture that is usually meant to make fun of a subject. For the individuals who do not have the foggiest idea about the PSAT, formally known as the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and co-supported by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, it is both practice for the SAT and a chance to qualify for National Merit grants. Since the test provides a chance to grants (money that is given to students
10
for college), the College Board made it very clear that the disclosing of information was prohibited. Students were required to rewrite a statement that you had to copy in their handwriting that stated how they would not disclose information about the test, with that in mind why have students chosen to break that? According to an employee at the College Board, Agent Michael, “Unless they actually list a specific question then no, they are not breaking any rules. As long as they do not do that, they are completely fine with referencing the material since that is out of our hands.” Michael, due to College Board policy, was not able to provide his last name; however, his agent number is 1082190 if readers have further questions. From the information that was provided from the representative at the College Board, students are completely safe and have not broken any laws as long as they do not discuss the test explicitly.
ohsjagwire.org
Prejudicial assumptions are one of the main reasons for why points are added or subtracted. Asian-Americans are assumed to be very intelligent and they are assumed to have the availability of resources which will help them receive better scores, hence the 50 point deduction. African-Americans and Hispanic/Latinos, however, are assumed to not have the same resources nor the materials needed to receive a higher score, hence the “bonus” points. Points are added or subtracted from the scores to level out the playing field and give every student of every ethnicity an equal chance of getting accepted into a four-year university. But is this fair or accurate? Although the intention was to give every student an equal chance of getting into a four-year university, it is unfair to base the scores of students in any way on ethnicity.

o one knows the true origin of the burrito, but legend insists that everything began in the 1900’s with a man named Juan Mendez in Chihuahua, Mexico. Mendez had a street stand where he sold tacos. He found that his ingredients would get cold. To prevent this from happening, he wrapped the food in a big homemade flour tortilla, thus creating the burrito. Mendez began selling the item and it instantly became a success. In an attempt to expand his customer base, Mendez got a donkey cart to transport the burritos around town to sell them. It is unknown why the burrito is named what it is, but it is believed that it was named because it was sold out of a donkey cart. In Spanish, burro is donkey while burrito means little donkey.

In addition, you are offered exclusive deals with extremely low prices that do not require you to pay any shipping fees (Dealnews). However, in order to benefit from these sales you have to wake up early in the morning ready to wait in long lines at department stores. On the other hand, Cyber Monday offers more retailerwide-discounts and items that did not sell well during Black Friday are given an additional discount (RealSimple). By shopping online, it is also important to consider that you are competing for items nationwide meaning that items could be sold out before you purchase them. With this being said, both Black Friday and Cyber Monday offer great sales but it all depends on personal preferences.

ccording to U.S. Treasury Secretary, Jack Lew, a woman will be featured on the redesigned $10 bill in the year 2020. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, Alexander Hamilton will be replaced by an influential woman in history. This event is extremely important in American history because the last woman featured on US paper currency was Martha Washington on the $1 Silver Certificate from 1891 to 1896. In the entirety of United States’ history, there have only been four woman recognized in US currency. Along with Martha Washington, Pocahontas was recognized on the $1 Silver Certificate from 1865 to 1869. There were also Dollar Coins with the face of Susan B. Anthony in 1979. Lastly, Sacagawea was represented on the dollar coin in 1999.

The U.S. Treasury Department has launched a website and is asking for help via social media with the use of the hashtag #theNew10. By using this hashtag, Americans are able to give their input on who should be on the new ten dollar bill in the year 2020. Lew has provided a specific criteria for the dollar bill candidates. Firstly, the candidate must have lived an influential life for the American people. Second, the woman can no longer be alive. Lew said in an interview that the chosen woman for the new bill will be revealed by the end of the year.
