Wrestling:a winning team at OHS
o
ur wrestling team at Ontario High School is one to watch. It is no joke that these students pour their sweat and tears out on the mat. Five days a week, from four o’clock to six thirty, these students endure one of the toughest sport Ontario has to offer. This “family” of forty-four is notorious for successfully beating out their opponents and conquering in their matches. OHS wrestling team captain, Jesse Palomar, shares, “Last year for league finals, we had eight of our wrestlers go to compete for medals; seven of us won.” Palomar continues, “From those seven, we took them to CIF and three of our wrestlers competed for 1st place. Overall, this team has 13 league champions and four master qualifiers.” Even in all their glory, there is still a challenge this team has not yet been able to overcome. Unfortunately, despite all of their accomplishments, the team feels a lack of support and recognition.Varsity wrestler, Bernardo Esparza comments, “Most spirit only lasts until football season comes to an
end, so in a way I find it very hypocritical that we brag about having the most school spirit when [Ontario] can’t support one of the most hard working sports on campus. But thank you to Mr. Zendejas, who has always been one of our greatest supporters!” Regardless of recognition or support, the team and their captains understand that this sport is more than just a popularity contest. Keep in mind that this is not an accredited class, these students are not getting the course credit that comes with being in a registered sport due to a scheduling conflict this year, yet they still endure the difficulties of what it takes to be a wrestler. In spite of whether they receive the benefits or not, the team has created their own individual significance and meaning behind what it means to be a wrestler and what motivation they have to succeed. Palomar comments, “I used to walk with my head down. Ever since wrestling, I lost fifty pounds my freshman year. Wrestling gave me confidence in not only the way I looked and felt about myself, but also it gave me a reason to hold my head up high because I knew all that I was really capable of.”

Alexia Marquez, sophomore wrestler comments, “Coach Quast is really strict about grades, he always says ‘you can’t call yourself a student athlete if you don’t have the grades to show for it.’ This was honestly my motivation to do good in school. I do have a passion for wrestling. I do plan on stick to wrestling all four years so it helps that I keep on top of my school work as well.” As wrestling season continues, be sure to show up and support the team that works tirelessly to represent Ontario well, through all their victories.

American scapegoat
I
n post nine-eleven America, citizens have grown increasingly paranoid of fellow Muslim Americans. The recent acts of terror in San Bernardino, Paris, Beirut and around the globe accredited to radical Islamic terrorist organizations such as ISIS and Boko Haram, have made everyday non-radical Muslims a target for persecution. According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, there exists at least 39 different major Islamophobic groups across the United States that help instill paranoia in their followers. Such paranoia is being expressed in rallies across the country in states such as Arizona and Texas, which feature signs with degrading slurs that mock Islamic figures. Just last week in Philadelphia, a vehicle drove by and threw a pig’s head at a mosque. Open displays of prejudice towards Islam tend to derive from ignorance. In a poll conducted by Huffington Post, only seven percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of the religion, yet forty-four percent of Americans had no interest in informing themselves about the religion. There is a lack of comprehension and more discouraging, a lack of will to be informed. This is confirmed by “Islamophobes” themselves, as a sign reads, “All I need to know about Islam, I learned on 9/11” at an anti-Islam rally here in the United States. The media also plays a part in perpetuating Islamophobia. Brian Kilmeade, the television host of Fox & Friends, expressed in Oct. 2010 that “Not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims,” singling out Muslims as the only possible perpetrators of terrorism. A false generalization, as a study conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation concluded that only 6 percent of terror attacks on U.S. soil between 1980 and 2005 were committed by Muslims. Politicians have also expressed anti-Islamic sentiment. Donald Trump, a Republican frontrunner, said that he would ban all Muslim immigration to the United States. Dr. Ben Carson, a current Republican presidential candidate, recently said in an
2
interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper that he would not vote for a Muslim president. He argued that they would have to openly reject all the tenets of Islam and “American people, the majority of them, agree and they understand exactly what I am saying.” The Five Pillars (faith, prayer, charity, fasting, pilgrimage) are widely recognized as the tenets of Islam. However, Carson refers particularly to Sharia, the ideal legal system in the Qu’ran, as something that a Muslim president would have to openly reject . The extreme interpretation of Sharia has been embraced by ISIS and other extremist groups. However, these violent interpretations of Sharia put forth by terrorist organizations are overwhelmingly rejected by the Muslim community. He assumes that a Muslim President would embrace a radical interpretation of a portion of the Qur’an put forth exclusively by radical Muslims, but evidently he would not assume that a Christian counterpart embraces a portion of Bible that is only embraced by radical Christians. any domestic pets are left on the streets or in overcrowded shelters without a home. The World Health Organization estimates that there are more than 200 million stray dogs worldwide. There are 13,600 animal shelters available for these animals worldwide, but 2.7 million are still euthanized yearly (aspca.org). The problem of stray animals is a global issue, especially in Greece. Due to their economic crisis, many Greek families are uprooted from their homes and can not afford to keep their household pets. This leaves stray dogs all over the islands. A tourist visiting the islands said, “The dogs were at every turn, lying alone and tired, playing in groups in a park, or crossing extremely busy streets. Most were not too gaunt, though

basis of Carson’s flawed logic is discrimination. When a Christian is elected president, it is without question that they reject the part of the Bible that says a stubborn child deserves to be stoned to death, but by Carson’s logic, a double standard would have to be applied if a Muslim were elected president. How does Islamophobia affect students on our campus? “It happens all the time, friends always make jokes’” says fellow jaguar, Mohammad Dohadwala, “it doesn’t bother me, it’s just a normal thing… the more you pay attention to it, the more they do it [joke].” Dohadwala continued “It is impossible to get rid of the stereotype, the way the media portrays [us], people are misinformed, they only see the evil.” The root of Islamophobia is misinformation. The only path to breaking the stereotype is informing the public.
they were clearly hungry” (dogster.com). There is one organization in Greece that helps stray animals. The Santorini Animal Welfare Association is a non-governmental not for profit organization aimed at caring for the stray animals of Greece (SAWA). They work with any animal from cats and dogs, to donkeys and mules that wander the streets of Greece (sawasantorini. org). SAWA does what they can to help the animals by leaving out food and water for them, setting up arrangements with locals to allow for the animals to sleep in their courtyards and spaying and neutering all the strays they can, before releasing them back onto the streets. The association has limited space and can not house animals for too long. However, they can adopt out any animal in Greece to visiting tourists after a quick clean up and spay or neuter. Recently, the mayor of Santorini, Anastasios Nikolaos Zorzos, took SAWA to court, declaring them illegal. This is not the first time the mayor has caused problems for the shelter. In November of 2014, he bulldozed the organization’s main road in order to prevent food, water and other needed resources from reaching the shelter (thepetitionsite.com). There is no answer to whether or not the case has been won, but as of now, the shelter remains open, helping stray dogs find a home.

otorious for the use of violence and terrorism, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria(ISIS) is one of the biggest and most funded organizations in history. Not only are they terrorizing Syria and the European continent, but they have now threatened the United States. Many organizations and countries have attempted to stop them. ISIS, an extremist group of Muslims, who unlike the average Muslim, practice their religion under Sharia Law. Sharia Law is a list of laws, benefiting mostly men, that state punishments such as barbaric ways of execution or amputation of the hand for crimes including stealing and criticizing the words of Muhammad or the script of the Quran. The New York Times shows that so far, ISIS has declared provinces in about 10 countries not only in the Middle East but Africa and Asia as well. According to The New York Times in this past year, ISIS has “successfully” executed at least 10 terrorist attacks, from the Charlie Hebdo Shooting in Paris in January of this year, to the Mosque Bombing in Yemen which killed 130 people this past April. The most recent attack was the bombing in Paris Dec. 13, 2015, which killed roughly over 130 people. It has even been confirmed that they were responsible for the crash of the German Metrojet plane, resulting in a more “hands-on” involvement from Germany.

So, why haven’t they been stopped? Who is helping them? How are they getting their money to keep the organization alive? According to CNN news, in 2014 ISIS made roughly half a billion dollars through robbing banks, stealing cars and trading of weapons and people in northern and western Iraq. They also heavily and unfairly tax their people for things such as driving and cashing out at an ATM which is said to earn them several million, per month. Furthermore, ISIS will not hesitate to kidnap or hold hostages for ransom. Although the U.S. policy is not to negotiate with terrorists, other countries including Europe have been willing to give the terrorists money in order to get their loved ones back. ISIS has no limits when acquiring the money they need to fund their organization. They will also stop at nothing to recruit people. They go about this through social media and it seems to be working, due to an immense amount of followers, including an American couple from Minnesota who were charged with attempting to join the forces of ISIS in August of this year. Then there is Anonymous, of course. Anonymous is a group of activist who are very tech-heavy. Most of what they do is online which is why they have acquired the title “hacktivists.”

n October 31, South Korean professional gaming team SKT T1 won the 2015 League of Legends World Championship at the Mercedes Benz Arena in Berlin. League of Legends is a free to play game defined as a MOBA; a multiplayer online battle arena. It was created by Riot Games, Inc for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. The video game pits two, 5-player teams against each other in the effort to destroy each other’s’ nexus; a unique structure located at the heart of each team’s base. Each player takes control of a “champion”, a unique character with special abilities and powers, who takes assigned roles in the game. This consist of a “mid laner,” “top laner,” “jungler,” “support,” and an “ attack damage carry (adc).” The game has an extremely large fan base; according to Riot Games, “ League of Legends by player numbers: 67 million playing

They are called “Anonymous” because they hide behind the famous Vendetta Mask. The group, a worldwide organization, is all over the Internet, including Facebook and Youtube where they update videos of their most recent news and operations. With the recent attack on Paris, France has been heavily involved. Shortly after the event, Anonymous came into the picture stating that they will go after ISIS, starting with the blockage of their recruitment technique. Fear could very well be an obstacle to helping the the Middle Easterners defend their country against the notorious group. It seems ISIS is becoming a more realistic threat to the U.S. This may be the beginning of another war. France, Germany, The United States and even Anonymous have teamed up against ISIS and they will stop at almost nothing to make sure terrorists and harmful ideology ceases to exist. The answer as to whether or not it will work is frighteningly unclear. What is clear, however, is that no one will go down without a fight.

Locations for each match vary every year. For example, the 2014 LCS finals was held in Seoul, Korea, while the 2013 LCS finals were held at the Los Angeles Staple Center. First place winners were awarded $1,000,000 dollars, second place winners were awarded $250,000, and third place winners were awarded $150,000. In this year’s League Championship Series, matches were held through 4 locations across Europe. The group stage began in Paris, France; the quarterfinals in London, England; semifinals in Brussels,

The team included mid laner Lee Sang-hyeok(Faker), support Lee Jae-wan(Wolf), top laner Jang Gyeong-Hwan(MaRin), jungler Bae Seongung(Bengi), and attack damage carry Bae Jun-sik(Bang). SKT’s win made them the world’s first two-time world champions of League of Legends. As a celebration of their victory, the entire team held the special summoner’s cup in a momentous occasion of joy and happiness. Star mid-laner Faker, widely considered to be the best player in the world stated, “Thank you [to all the fans] for cheering and always loving me”. Congratulations to SKT T1 and stay tuned to the upcoming all-star game in December.

Claremont McKenna students take action
I
CARINA HERNANDEZ Editor
n wake of racial tensions that universities are currently facing across the nation, the institution of Claremont Mckenna is currently dealing with alleged racial discrimination on its campus. Claremont Mckenna, a highly selective liberal arts college best known for educating its students in business and public affairs, has been facing pressure from college students across the Claremont Consortium, which includes: Claremont Mckenna, Pomona, Scripps, Harvey Mudd and Pitzer. Tensions began to spark when, what seemed to be an isolated incident regarding a picture of two college students from Claremont Mckenna wearing offensive Halloween costumes, began gaining an immense amount of social media attention and backlash from people of color who took offense. A group called Claremont Mckenners of Color, who are at the forefront of the situation, state this was not an isolated incident. In an official statement released by the group, they voice, “Our movement did not begin with an insensitive photo posted on Halloween. Our movement began eight
months ago, when we first presented the administration with our recommendations. The photo was a symptom of a larger problem.” The Claremont Mckenners of Color explain their movement, “...stems from the desire to rid a culture of discrimination against marginalized communities on campus.” One student, Lisette Espinosa, shared her concerns pertaining to the marginalized communities at Claremont Mckenna with the Dean of Students, Mary Spellman. Spellman’s response in trying to resolve the issue and “better serve students, especially those who don’t fit our CMC mold” was not well received by some students, igniting student-led protests and pressuring for her resignation. Upon the request of protests, some as extreme as hunger strikes, Spellman stepped down from her position as Dean of Students. Quickly after this incident, the Claremont Mckenners of Color stated, “Our movement never called for the resignation of Dean Spellman” thus not affiliating themselves with those protests. Angered by the extreme actions of some protesters, Nathaniel Tsai, a govern-
ment major at Claremont McKenna, has written a letter on behalf of the student body criticizing the tactics of fellow protesters. In part of the letter he asked, “Were Mary Spellman’s offenses so great that you would die for her resignation? You ask what the alternative is? It sits in front of you, a petition, a civil and democratic tool.” Over 260 students support the letter and have since created a petition to bring Spellman back as Dean. Claremont McKenna is in the midst of a federal investigation concerning racial discrimination. Only time will tell if the Claremont McKenna community will heal frothese events and be once again united.

chool pride and spirit has always impacted campuses positively, but how far can students take this proud reward and steer it into the wrong direction? The final high school football game of the season depicts the intense relationship between Ontario and their longtime rival. Students from both schools were prepared for the upcoming game through spirit weeks, brightly colored school gears and even by bringing with them smoke balls to cheer. Despite the cheerful spirit before the game, the school rivalry intensified when students decided to take the competition onto social media. Junior at Ontario High School, Diana Ruiz, says “I feel like on social media it was more about trash talking to each other, attacking certain people not necessarily spirit...it was more about school shaming.”
Students from both schools trash talked about how the other school would do poorly and called out names that later became trends amongst the social media sites. The situation worsened as the victor, Ontario, beat their rivals. Sophomore Lisa Vu, who attends the rival school, urges “that although both schools talked smack about one another, Ontario was trying to defend themselves.” Both schools showed bad sportsmanship for a game that was originally an activity meant for friendly competitive purposes. In the end, however, the students claimed that they had a lot of fun. Ruiz exclaims, “Then again we showed a lot of school spirit, with our loud colors and chants!” Students from both schools hope for an event like this to happen once again.

hristmas is coming. Children on the good list await good ol’ St. Nicholas, while those on the bad list may not only get coal for Christmas, but a special visit from the horrific Christmas, devil, Krampus. Krampus is a goat-like creature with horns and claws. He is said to be the son of Hel (of Norse mythology) and shares some characteristics from Greek mythology. The legend of Krampus originated in Germany. His legend is part of a centuries-old Christmas tradition. The word Krampus in German is Krampen which means claw. He supposedly swats bad children with switches and/or rusty chains before dragging them into a basket and taking them to Hell. According to folklore, December 6 happens to be Nikolaustag or St. Nicholas Day. And Krampus shows up in towns the night before December 6, known as Krampusnacht, or Krampus night.
Children check their shoes or boots that they had left out the night before so they can determine if they made it to the good or bad list. fter a long long time ago, in a generation far far away, the new chapter to the Star Wars saga premieres on December 18th. The anticipation is building for Star Wars fans as they make plans to see the very anticipated, seventh installment of the film this coming holiday. Of course, the new film brings a new cast as well as some familiar faces such as Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill, also known Han Solo and Luke Skywalker.
New characters such as Fin (played by John Boyega) and Rey (Daisy Ridley) have to team up together to face a new galactic threat, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and his First Order Stormtroopers. In order to stay alive, they team up with Han Solo who helped defeated the Galactic Empire thirty years before. The anticipation of Luke Skywalker in the new film has made its way to create conspiracies throughout many Star Wars fans and critics. Some say the Luke is the new enemy of the film and will follow the same path as his father, Darth Vader. Others suggest that Luke Skywalker will play an Obi-Wan Kenobi type of role and train newly discovered Jedi Finn. Otherwise, the role of Luke Skywalker in the film is still unknown. The film of course has a lot of licensed products and sponsorship deals. Some being Disney’s own products that have become an instant hit like the Sphero BB-8, a toy droid that can be controlled by using an app on your phone. Also, some companies such as Verizon, have
teamed up with the film to release Google Cardboard to promote the film in a virtual reality experience. If toys or virtual reality is not your thing, the pre-sale tickets for the Star Wars movie outsold the The Hunger Games not once, but eight times! According to Variety Magazine, the film’s pre-sale tickets have sold more than The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and The Hunger Games combined. The web traffic to purchase the tickets was so tremendous that some websites crashed within 24 hours. You can still purchase your tickets before it is too late! Whether you are a new fan or an old fan, the film has risen in popularity and is to be enjoyed this holiday season around the world. The force is strong with this one. Felt it, have you?

Editorial: Jails are not mental health clinics STEPHANIE CARBALLO Co-Editor in Chief

urrently, jails and prisons house the majority of the mentally ill people in the United States. 45% of California’s inmates have been diagnosed with one or multiple mental illnesses (motherjones.com). The Treatment Advocacy Center (TAC) reports that as of 2012, there are 10 times more mentally ill people in prisons and jails than in state hospitals. Thousands of dollars are spent a year to treat mentally ill inmates. Confining seriously mentally ill criminals costs about a $100,000 a year while other inmates only require $30,000 per year (motherjones.com). Unfortunately, the mental treatment that jails and prisons provide is not effective.
10
The U.S. government made major cuts to mental health facilities across the country between 2009 and 2011, totaling 1.8 billion dollars, and “States have cut vital services for tens of thousands of youth and adults living with the most serious mental illness” (nami.org). Cuts to mental health services pose a very dangerous threat to civilians. When mentally ill inmates are released from correctional facilities, they go out into unsupportive communities where they are often isolated because they cannot obtain proper medical treatment. They resort to self medication with alcohol and drugs (nami. org). Without the proper medical attention they need to function in society, mentally ill inmates spiral back down into their old ways and back into the very prisons or jails from which they were released. To make matters worse, jails and prisons release inmates without providing them with the “effective mental health facilities and programs to help released prisoners who are in desperate need of mental health treatment” (law.stanford. edu). treatment, he ended up with two felony convictions for crimes committed while incarcerated” (cnn.com). Luckily, Blough was finally able to access the treatment from a mental health facility. His mental state improved and he now dedicates his time to help “teach law enforcement officers effective ways to intervene with people with mental health needs” (cnn.com). Blough’s struggle to obtain effective mental help is a true example of jail’s ineffectiveness in treating mentally ill inmates. He proves that, with the right mental treatment, mentally ill people can contribute great things to the world. By getting the proper medical help they need, the mentally ill can have a better chance of becoming valuable factions of and contributors to society. Locking up and isolating the

Shooting the dice DANIEL VERGARA Staff Writer Recently a few students have been unknowingly breaking the law by bringing dice to Ontario high school and playing street craps; a simpler version of traditional casino craps, during first lunch. A typical play is one-on-one with only one dollar at stake. On rare occasions, side bets are placed and bets can go up to twenty dollars. Plays such as these get intense and lead to traits of aggressiveness in bettors. Players mostly likely know what they are doing is against school policy which is why they keep a low-profile when school officials are around. This has allowed them to gamble for about a month now. According to California Penal Code 330, any person who hosts, bets or is in any way involved in a game of Faro, Monte, Roulette, Lansquenet, Rouge et noire, Rondo, Tan, Fan-Tan Sevenand-a-Half, Twenty One, Hokey Pokey or any banking or percentage game played with cards or dice for money, checks, credit, or other representative of value is guilty of a misdemeanor. The culprit may be punished by either a fine or imprisonment or both. The fine may be above $200, but will be less than a $1000. Imprisonment exceeds no more than six months. Streets Craps is considered illegal because the game is unregulated and it only involves dice. California law prohibits gambling in games of chance and only allows games of skill in casinos. Players are not only violating the law but also school

(Vergara) policy. In the beginning of the year all students and their parents or guardians attested by signature that they had read the content in the CJUHSD handbook which lists “Gambling/Paraphernalia: Participating in games of chance for the purpose of exchanging money and/or other valuables” as a behavior problem that must not be committed. The handbook reads “In cases of serious and/or continued violation of school rules and regulations, a student may, after due notice to both the student and the parent/guardian, be removed from a class or from school. Short of that, a student may be put on school probation, which means that another violation of school rules would probably result in loss of class or school.” If you are tempted to gamble, remember the consequences could potentially damage your reputation in the game of life. Do not let a couple of dollars determine your future.
