Masking the truth

irst world problems—eh, not a big deal; although, many residents in first-world countries, even in our own communities, experience a life of poverty. A substantial amount of our community’s population is considered to be living in poverty. However, a major factor that continues to contribute to the issue of poverty both in our community and across the nation are stereotypical, first-world problems that mask the truth of what the community actually deals with. This only perpetuates the stigma of the problems and causes people to turn their back on serious issues like poverty. As a matter of fact, according to NewsGeography, the Inland Empire has one of the nation’s highest poverty rates. The Inland Empire’s poverty rate has sharply risen to 20.4% between the years 2009 2015. The issue has been belittled as the overview of first-world prob(Carabez) lems are becoming more and more likened to comedic excuses, while the rate of poverty continues to increase according to LA Times. Since impoverished residents live in this kind of country, most people see our problems uncomparable to those people such as in third-world countries face; however, people in our community are struggling to live. Poverty exploded in many regions, including ours, following the recession in 2012, which showed itself early in the Inland Empire as a result of the collapse of the housing market. Aside from poverty, there has also been a rising of unemployment, which is 7.8%. (The Sun Censuses). These factors are attributed to the low education attainment levels as where 47% stopped at high school or lower. Although living in a first-world country may make complaining seem ridiculous, it has become a challenge for some to even obtain the necessities for survival such as food or shelter. The issue is not poverty itself, it is the fact that it is being overlooked because the public has not been exposed to the reality of poverty.

Democratic Socialism in America EDITORIAL STEPHANIE CARBALLO Co-Editor in Chief

M

any democrats, especially young people, are in support of Bernie Sanders becoming the next President of the United States. With all the support that Bernie Sanders has been receiving it seems that many Americans are welcoming a more socialist approach to governing. Many are concerned that if he were to win the presidency, he would eventually fight for the “deprivatization” of enterprise, meaning that corporations and businesses would no longer be free of government influence. This fear comes from a misunderstanding of what democratic- socialism means. A democratic socialist country is one that “uses both capitalist and socialist practices” (merriam-webster). America’s fundamental principles are based on liberty and individualism, so it is understandable why the idea of “deprivitazation” and allowing government to have more control over the economy is not well received by many Americans. What separates socialism from democratic-socialism is democracy. Democratic-socialists do not believe in taking away representative government or in taking away privately owned businesses and organizations. Democratic-socialists want to ensure that the people are being represented properly while trying to even out the economic ground for struggling Americans. As a democratic socialist, Bernie Sanders is not trying to eliminate privately owned business. The Democratic Socialists of America say that “Democratic-socialists do not want to create an allpowerful government bureaucracy. But we do not want big corporate bureaucracies to control our society either. Rather, we believe that social and economic decisions should be made by those whom they most affect.” Socialism and democratic-socialism are often confused with communism. During a rally in Tampa, Florida, Donald Trump called Bernie Sanders a communist (abc.news.go). Clearly, Trump has not had a refresher on government and politics because socialism is definitely not the same thing as communism. Communism is “a theory advocating elimination of private property...[where] goods are owned in common and are available to all as needed” (merriam-webster). As mentioned before, neither socialism nor democratic socialism believe in the elimination of private property or business. Democratic Socialism is not new to America. American government has adopted bits and pieces of socialism in an attempt to create a better life for the American people. Social Security and minimum wage can all be considered socialist (mises.org).

Free public school and free school lunch would not be possible without socialism. Government and AP Government teacher Ms. Ellwanger states “Some examples that high school kids might not be aware of is if you qualify for free lunch, that’s a socialistic institution because federal monies are used to feed kids”. She also states “FAFSA is socialism. The government gives kids money to go to school.” Ellwanger adds that in democratic socialist countries like Sweden, a university education is provided for free for all students. Here the government does not provide a free college education for all students, but it aids in giving students money for school. Despite American criticism for democratic-socialism, socialism has benefited and positively impacted Americans for decades. (see counterpoint argument on page 9).

n 1959, a new toy was introduced to America that still sells out in stores today- Recently, Barbie. Now, in 2016, they introduced different body shapes. Barbie became someone to be looked up to by girls and womenportraying women with different careers that women during the late 1950s could not have. Ruth Handler, the creator of Barbie, came across the idea when she saw her daughter playing with paper dolls- witnessing the roles her daughter imagined on these paper dolls. She was inspired to create something new that would fill the product void during the difficult times of post-war. After Barbie made her way to the top of the toy industry, she kept the same image of a tall, caucasian with blue eyes. People felt there was no diversity between the barbie dolls and how women actually looked, but in 2009 a realistic Barbie with African American features was released. Now there is even more diversity with the new body shapes they introduced in January. The new body types are tall, curvy and petite. Recently a new video surfaced on Buzzfeed that recorded adults and children’s reactions of the modified dolls.

4

In the video, People review the new Barbie bodies, the adults were asked “how do you think this will affect kids growing up?” Curly Velasquez responded, “Kids should understand that you shouldn’t look at a plastic toy and think like that’s what I need to look like, that’s what I need to become.” He also stated that “It is very important that parents teach their kids not to see themselves as plastic things.” Many adults in the video admired the idea of the modified barbies but stated that, “They need to ensure the idea of different shapes, looks and skin colors and encourage young children to admire their unique bodies.” In another video called, Kids review the new Barbie dolls, they asked children “What do you think about Barbie coming out with all these different bodies?” One girl said “It is very creative.” A boy stated that “I really like the curvy one because some people don’t really look like barbies, so I like how they made them curvier.” At the end of the video a girl mentions how there is not an average body type representing the different shapes of people that can be beneficial to young children which is extremely important in today’s society. The new body shape is a step forward to reality and the diversity between different body shapes. Hopefully, this will improve how young girls perceive themselves in the future. Some girls felt that they had to look like the traditional Barbie, but now can appreciate their own body shape and look forward to being themselves.

t is generally assumed women are the victims and men are the perpetrators when speaking about domestic violence. However, that is not always the case. Males are victims from mental, physical and sexual abuse as well. According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in seven males above the age of 18 in the U.S. experience domestic abuse. The CDC also states one in ten males have experienced rape or physical violence from an intimate partner. Domestic abuse is classified as Intimate Partner Violence (IVP) by the CDC. Despite these results, society still follows the narrow definition of gender stereotypes. Males are taught not to express their emotions openly; they are taught “to be a man”, and to “suck it up.” (The National Domestic Violence Hotline). As a result, males may feel discouraged to express their experience of domestic abuse, in fear that no one may believe them. Sometimes, men do not realize that they are suffering from domestic abuse and

simply assume that they must fix the problem on their own. Domestic abuse against men is not easy to identify, but it is a serious problem, since male domestic abuse victims are not limited to heterosexual relationships (Mayoclinic.org). Domestic violence against men and women include: physical abuse, such as hitting, pushing, throwing objects; verbal abuse, which includes name calling, degradation of one’s worth and threats; and sexual abuse (forcing a partner to act in any sexual activity that they are not comfortable with) (oregoncounseling.org). Men who suffer from domestic violence have many resources to help themselves. For example they may call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800799-7233. Victims of all abuse as well may seek assistance from the Jenesse Center located in Los Angeles. Male or Female, domestic abuse is a serious problem that requires immediate assistance. IVP must be stopped before it can escalate to more fatal instances.

veryone is different, whether that be in size, weight, or nationality. Some are very people orientated. Outgoing people are often labeled as extrovert, while others like the peace and quiet of being alone, making them introverts. Surprisingly, the brains of introverts and extroverts are activated differently depending on their situation. It has a lot to do with a chemical called dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that controls the brain’s reward and pleasure system. According to medicaldaily. com, extroverts exhibit qualities such as charm, charisma and persuasion, while introverts tend to be more creative. The differences are not always black and white: we all live in a spectrum between introversion and extroversion.

6

Right in the middle of that spectrum is ambiversion. An ambivert is a person who shows features of both introverts and extroverts. In the 1960s, psychologist Hans Eysenck theorized that extroverts had a lower level of “arousal.” He also believed that extroverts required more stimulation from the world, in order to feel alert and awake, while introverts can be easily over-stimulated. In 2005, researchers concluded a study that linked personally to dopamine. They used a brain scanner to examine the responses from the participants. When the gambling brought positive results, extroverts exhibited stronger responses in two regions of the brain, the amygdala and the nucleus accumbens, showing that they process surprise and reward differently than introverts (medicaldaily.com). The amygdala is the integrative center for emotions, emotional behavior and motivation. The nucleus accumbens operates solely on two essential neurotransmitters:

dopamine, which promotes desire and serotonin, whose effects include gratification and ownership (karg.cbi.pku.edu.cn). A 2012 study, conducted by Randy Buckner of Harvard University discovered that introverts have larger, thicker gray matter in the prefrontal cortex, a region of the brain linked to abstract thought and decision-making. He concluded that this might be accountable for introverts’ tendencies to sit and ponder things thoroughly before making a decision and extroverts’ ability to live in the moment and take risks, without fully thinking everything through. (www.medicaldaily.com) The brain is the most complex part of the human body and far more research is required to fully understand what defines personality.

In most sports the whole team goes through the CIF process but in wrestling only the individuals that win and meet the expected criteria go on to compete in CIF. Hard work and dedication led OHS wrestlers to successfully make it to CIF this year and make history. Wrestling captain Anthony Anaya (senior) went above and beyond in his last year of wrestling, when he placed fifth in CIF. Anaya was also the first in nine years to make it to Masters, the next level up in CIF. Anaya has been in wrestling since his freshman year and made it to CIF sophomore year as an alternate.

(Villarreal) His junior year he made it to second day CIF and now has experienced the achievement of Masters. Every year he has improved, striving for better with passion and courage. “My journey so far has been great. I have made a lot of friends.” He emphasizes how wrestling was hard especially during the week of Masters, but it was staying devoted and the support of his teammates that kept him going. He states, “It felt good to make it to Masters I just wish my friends were there with me.” Now that wrestling has come to an end Anaya participates after school where his teammates practice with their coach. Anaya predicts the wrestling team next year will do well and recommends the team to stay dedicated.

Bernie vs Hillary

DAVID DANG Staff writer

t this time in writing, Hillary Clinton has won 754 delegates, while Bernie Sanders has won 540 delegates for the democratic nomination. The official number of delegates required for the nomination is 2,382. Despite Hillary Clinton’s lead, Bernie Sanders still remains an extremely competitive and ambitious rival in the democratic nomination. As demonstrated throughout Super Tuesday, Super Saturday, and the Iowa Caucus, both candidates have won and lost important states. The old idiom, “the tables have turned,” perfectly describes the intense atmosphere of this extremely close presidential primary. As a self-proclaimed socialist, Bernie Sanders is mainly appealing to debt-burdened young Americans, who are struggling to pay off college loans. Millennials, who lived through the 2008 recession and the financial struggles their parents faced are more likely to advocate for Bernie Sanders. In fact, statistics from the Iowa Caucus show “Mr. Sanders defeated Mrs. Clinton among voters ages 17 to 29 by 70 percentage points, greater than the 43-percentage-point margin by which Barack Obama won that age group in Iowa in 2008.”

8

According to the Washington Times, Bernie Sanders plans to make college debt free and reduce interest rates. Under Bernie Sanders’ plans, current interest rates on undergraduate loans would drop from 4.37% to 2.37%. Furthermore, “As President, Sen. Sanders will prevent the federal government from profiteering on the backs of college students and use this money instead to significantly lower student loan interest rates.” Clearly, Sanders is gaining a large amount of support from “students, parents of students who have shared the burden for their children’s student loans, and young families who see free college as a way to avoid one of the most expensive costs of raising a child.” In addition, Bernie Sanders has a strong history of working as a civil rights activist in the 1960’s. Time Magazine reported, “At the University of Chicago, he was a leader of the Congress of Racial Equ ity, a major civil rights group. News accounts from the time had Sand leading protests over racial inequality.” Hillary Clinton finds strong support amongst minority voters the United States for two major reasons. First, Clinton is pushing for reforms on immigration. In the d ocratic debate on February 11th, Clinton stated, "We should be depor criminals, not hard-working immigrant families," she claims. "I was o of the original sponsors of the DREAM Act.” Second, Hillary’s position as Bill Clinton’s first lady and Sec retary of State of Barack Obama, has significantly influenced African American voters. NPR (National Public Radio) states, “in the South C lina Democratic primary ... more than 8 in 10 black voters in that stat voted for Clinton.” Furthermore, Hillary Clinton also finds strong support amon women. According to a recent poll, “Women continue to have a much more positive opinion of Hillary Clinton than men do. Fifty-six perce women have a favorable opinion of Clinton, while 32% view her unfa ably.” As the race for presidential nomination continues, it is imper tive for everyone to maintain a clear and rational mind to avoid bigot amongst ourselves. Listen to the opinion of others and remain humble “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what takes to sit down and listen” - Winston Churchill.

here is no pure form of any economic system in practice today. Even in America’s “free market” it is no secret that within our rich history of capitalism lies, with moderation, some socialist programs that are currently in effect. The reality to this is, America runs as a mixed economy with free market principles entwined with socialist ideals. Democratic presidential candidate, and self proclaimed democratic socialist, Bernie Sanders, is proposing various socialist programs like, expansion of social security, Medicare for all, and tuition free public colleges and universities in his 2016 campaign. Democratic socialism is said to be the middle ground in the political spectrum but as with every economic and political system there are “tradeoffs and opportunity costs” to every

for

ideology. These proposals strike as “beneficiary”, however it’s important to acknowledge that these benefits have possible drawbacks . Economics / Government teacher, Mr.DeJong states, “Democratic socialism, is the hybrid of allowing the people to choose like a democracy, but with the principle that there are certain things that the government is going to be in charge of that private businesses and individuals will not.” Much criticism has been directed towards democratic socialism because of the fact that, typically democratic socialist countries like Denmark, Sweden and Belgium pay the highest top marginal tax rates of 60.2%, 56.6% and 53.7% compared with America’s highest top marginal tax rate of 39.6% (taxfoundation.org). High tax rates in America are not historically or presently embraced, many view these percentages as unfair and are skeptical of how well the

government can make use of its capital collected from taxpayers. With government operated programs, many Americans criticize the quality of service being provided. When there is no incentive to manage and own certain things, most businesses and entrepreneurs view it as a barrier to keep them from achieving things like acquiring wealth, land or making themselves prosperous. “When you come from a country that was founded on “free market capitalism” we believe the more choices we have, the better off we are as a society. We pride ourselves in a system where we believe it’s more fair to the consumer and to the businessman to have an open market.” Ultimately, it is uncertain what will be of the 2016 election. Whichever system we decide to try and emulate, it is important to acknowledge both sides to a much scrutinized ideology.

Effects of unemployment

A

MEGAN GEORGE Staff writer

s the news constantly discusses the rise and fall of unemployment rates, high school students are learning the significance of unemployment rates in history class. With all this talk of unemployment, there still seems to be a big disconnect between students truly knowing how the unemployment rate is relevant to the rising generation. In the United States today, 4.8% of the working population is unemployed. If one hundred Americans stood in a line, almost five of those people would be unemployed. As a high school student, that may seem like a small amount of jobs being lost…how could the overall unemployment rate be such a big deal? The current population of the United States is 318.9 million people, and if 4.8% of the population was not able to work, that would mean 15.6 million Americans are unemployed. This number is not completely accurate though due to the fact that the unemployment rate is set to be based off of the number of Americans able to work based on age. In California, 6.3% working-age Californians are currently jobless. Of the 38.8 million citizens living in California, approximately 2.4 million Californians are currently unemployed. As the statistics become closer home, this unemployment rate is beginning to show major relevance to high schoolers.

10

California has the largest population in the country and also one of the highest unemployment rates. As students begin their journey outside of high school, they are entering in a very competitive job. In Ontario, California, about 10,000 out of 167,500 citizens are currently unemployed. It becomes increasingly difficult to find a job because many employers begin to question why a person was released from previous employment and whether those qualities would work for their company. With so many people unemployed, it makes the job market increasingly competitive as teenagers and young adults often compete for the same jobs. The projected unemployment rate for the United States in the year 2020 will be 5%, meaning there will be slightly more people jobless then there is now. For young people, it may seem hard to avoid this unemployment statistic when many people with work experience do not have jobs as it is. According to aboutcareers.com, the more education that person has, the easier he will have finding a job. Because of the projected employment trends, it is highly recommended that high school students graduate from high school and even go to college in order to be competitive in a country with so many unemployed.

L.G.B.T.Q. breakdown DANIEL FLORES

mong the L.G.B.T.Q. (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning) community, global and national issues have not been resolved. In our nation, people are heading towards equality, but in other countries, that is not the case. According to infographicworld.com, “In much of Africa, homosexuality is still illegal. In fact, there are a few places where it is punishable by death, like Nigeria and Sudan.” There are more than 70 countries that have laws that make homosexuality illegal but the punishment varies depending on the country. Ever since the United States legalized same-sex marriage on June 26th, 2015, each country has created more laws to protect the people among the L.G.B.T.Q. community. Although homosexuality is illegal in some countries, hate crimes are still committed everywhere, even within the United States. “[According to the FBI], In the United States, out of the almost 6,000 hate crimes committed in 2013, 20 percent (approximately 1,200) were based on victims’ sexual orientation”(76crimes.com). Even though the L.G.B.T.Q. community has gained more support now than ever before, there are still people who believe people in the community are mentally ill. In December of 2014, Leelah Alcorn,

who was a transgender woman, posted a suicide note onto her tumblr blog and it sparked huge controversy. It became a public issue people talked about for weeks. Alcorn was a transgender woman who did not receive support from her parents because of her female-identity. She committed suicide hoping that her death would spark the discussion of what discrimination happens within the transgender community. YouTube star Miles Jai is gender fluid. According to genderdiversity.org, “Gender fluid people do not feel confined by restrictive boundaries of stereotypical expectations of women and men.” Jai’s fans have given him tremendous support regarding his sexual orientation. But despite all the fame Jai has, people constantly comment on Instagram or tweet at Jai with remarks such as“die,” “kill yourself” and more threats of all kind.. People who are part of the L.G.B.T.Q. community also struggle with getting a job. According to the Huffington Post, about 29 states can still legally fire someone for being gay. Huffington Post also reported that “A proposed federal law called the Employment Non-Discrimination Act would provide protections for all L.G.B.T. Americans working for employers with at least 15 employees. It’s been introduced in nearly every Congress since 1994, but has never passed.”

California has been one of the leading states in the United States to show support for the L.G.B.T.Q. community. In 2008, California started issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Passed by the Supreme Court of California in the re Marriage Cases, California is known to be famous for its support of the community. According to nerdwallet.com, cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego are named among the top 20 L.G.B.T.Q.-friendly U.S. cities. In our own local area, a recent bar has been opened to the public as a gay bar. Just this year, the bar “Gay 90’s” was constructed and opened. The club claims to also be heterosexual friendly and have “Beautiful People” as their slogan. According to the dailybulletin.com, as soon as the club announced that it was going to be a gay bar, it sparked controversy among some in the community. “We’ve already received a couple of complaints about the ‘in your face’ nature of the sign content and have expressed our dissatisfaction to the San Bernardino County Land Use Services Department,” states Steve Lustro, the community development director. It still plans to open as a gay bar. Compared to other countries, the United States is advancing towards treating people who identify themselves with the L.G.B.T.Q. community with equality. People’s mindsets are changing every day. But even if people who live in the United States are doing better than other countries, we have a long road ahead to make true equality possible.

n March 12, the Chaffey School District made girls’ dreams come true. Every year since 2011, the Cinderella Dreams Prom Dress Giveaway has been providing girls who do not have the finances to afford prom necessities such as: prom dresses, accessories and shoes. The Executive Director of Achievement for the Chaffey Joint Union High School District and an active participater in the program, Chris Hollister, is happy to be a part of the program. He works with the two individuals who started the program, Toni Quiroz and Janice Salas. Mr. Hollister said, “I am very lucky to be a part of something so uplifting for both the volunteers and girls.” Mr. Hollister has seen girls from different schools attend and each of them are unsure of what to expect but come out of the experience feeling like they are on cloud 9. “This is something they deserve and I am extremely lucky to be a part of it.” Last year, 68 girls were given dresses, 100 signed up but only 75% came to the event. It was a huge success for the program. This year, they are hoping to help 80 girls. “We want to make them feel like princesses as they walk out the door — we want them to be happy,” states Hollister. Many people volunteer and donate to the program, these people come every year and donate their time and effort to this program. Some volunteers have built a strong relationship with the girls and check on them regularly. All those involved are very grateful to have such dedicated volunteers and are excited for the turnout on March 12. Some new aspects of the program included the new connections they have with the community. They plan to have inspirational speakers come in and speak with the girls as well as many donations like food, makeup and shoes. Mr. Hollister says “Each year it has gotten bigger and better. We are even having seamstresses fit the girls and makeup artists who give them samples so they have an idea of what they want to do.” This program has been running for five years and each year they are gathering more girls and connections. Girls who attend have the opportunity to feel like a princess and go to prom without worrying about the financial needs for the prom necessities. The Cinderella Dreams Prom Dress Giveaway is giving girls a chance to have these high school memories that they will never forget.

t Ontario High School, their is a club known as Hallyu Paradise. Hallyu is Korean for “everything Korean.” But to most people, the club is known as KPop club. President Marisol Arpero, junior, and vice president Jennifer Navarro, senior, started the club this year. “We talk about Korean culture. It can be entertainment, history, games, mostly KPop and Korean dramas.” stated Arpero. The club mainly focuses on KPop. KPop stands for Korean Pop music. It originates in South Korea. Generally, KPop is produced by groups with the number of members ranging from three to 15 members. Within these groups, some of the members stand out or have a specific position: leader, main vocalist, main dancer, main rapper and the face of the group. Some popular groups in South Korea are: Girls’ Generation, EXO, BIGBANG, 2NE1 and many more, all of whom have opened a door for international acknowledgement. Hallyu Paradise does not only focus on Korean music; they also talks about anything that has to do with Korea. For example, the club plays games on Kahoot to test the members and measure their knowledge on all things Korea. Hallyu Paradise also makes Powerpoint presentations on Korea’s history and food to educate the members. Hallyu Paradise is a place for people interested in Korean culture who want to learn more. The KPop club meets every Friday after school in room Girls’ Generation 134.

pple, the world’s most well known tech giant, is locked in a legal battle with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) after the seizure of a terrorist’s iPhone 5c sparked political and moral debate regarding the issue of privacy on a digital scale. The FBI requested that Apple help extract data from the iPhone of Syed Rizwan Farook, one of the San Bernardino terrorists. Apple immediately refused, citing a violation of the First and Fifth Amendments. Many people, especially Apple customers, are compelled to support Apple, as the issue of privacy is one that affects a substantial amount of individuals. Such an issue evokes ambivalence in the public opinion; one side deals with national security, and the other advocates the necessity of digital privacy. Proponents of Apple’s decision argue that a private company with absolutely no involvement in the criminal activity should not be obligated to assist the government against its will. Supporters also make note of the Fourth Amendment, which states “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches

and seizures, shall not be violated…”, in an effort to champion individual privacy by reinforcing traditional law. Opponents firmly believe that the utmost national security is imperative in maintaining a safe society, even if it means renouncing some privacy. Increasingly sophisticated terrorist attacks have recently concerned the public and spurred a willingness to give up some privacy in exchange for safety. Both sides have generated strong opinions, but, generally, more of the public is in favor of Apple, as its customer base spans a wide demographic. In fact, Apple scored a major victory against the FBI on February 29th. If both sides persist-which is likely-the case will inevitably reach the Supreme Court.

ake accounts are one of the most common problems social media sites face. Everyday more people are victims of identity theft online and as long as more social media platforms are created the problem will only rise. Fake profiles that use the information of another person such as their full name, picture and the city the victim resides in, can harm the individual’s reputation. For example if the victim happens to be looking for a job and an employer stumbles upon the account, the victim’s reputation may be questioned. Although it may be against the policies of social media outlets, impersonating someone on any social media site is not illegal, but once it is used for purposes of harming, intimidating, threatening or defrauding another person, the creator of the account is guilty of a public offense. California penal (google.com) code 528.5(d) states that if the fake account is used to cause harm, the creator can be punished by either a fine or imprisonment in a county jail or both. The fine may be up to $1,000 and imprisonment may be up to one year. Additionally, if the victim suffers damage or loss he is able to “bring a civil action against the violator for compensatory damages and injunctive relief or other equitable relief.” Know that putting any of your information online makes you a potential target. To minimize the chances of becoming a victim of identity theft online you should keep all your social media accounts private and only allow those whom you trust to add/follow you. Also, if you choose to log into your social media on a public device, such as a library computer make sure to always log out.

P environmental students are learning how to grow vegetables in a sustainable way by starting a garden for the first time, here at OHS. (Alsalamy) Teacher Mrs. Ortiz states, “I’ve had this idea for a long time now. We thought we could have a little piece of land somewhere in the school or something.” This year, the AP environmental club president, Humberto Mendez, suggested planting the garden in the pond area. This was a good idea because it was close to the classroom and easier to water and maintain. This garden contains peppers, cilantro, tomatoes, lettuce, chillis, cabbage, strawberries, kale and more. Once all the vegetables are ready, they plan on using them to make salads and salsa to eat in their class. They also want to let the chemistry classes use the chillis for a lab if there are enough.

Creating Chimeras

RODOLFO VARELA

he idea of animals being used to progress in discoveries of the human body seems unearthly and surreal, but in reality, it is happening at this moment. To elaborate, some U.S research centers have been testing the growth of human tissue inside of pigs and sheep. These animals with human tissue integrated into their own are known as Chimeras. The textbook definition of a chimera is “an individual, organ, or part consisting of tissues of diverse genetic constitution.” (Dictionary.com) Chimeras are being used in the hope that we will develop the ability to grow human hearts, livers, and other organs that are difficult to find for transplants. This process is seen by many as unethical and further research would lead to blurred ethical lines.

)

Staff writer

The concern is that the animals might turn out to be too human for comfort, say ending up with human reproductive cells, patches of human hair, or just a higher level of intelligence. The chance of an animal gaining human consciousness is probably quite small; their brains are just too different and diminutive. Even so, as a precaution, researchers working with farm-animal chimeras haven’t yet permitted any to be born, but instead are collecting fetuses in order to gather preliminary information about how great the contribution of human cells is to the animals’ bodies. These experiments rely on a cutting-edge fusion of technologies, including recent discoveries in stem-cell biology and gene-editing techniques. By modifying

genes, scientists can now easily change the DNA in pig or sheep embryos so that they are genetically inept of forming a specific tissue. Then, by adding stem cells from a person, they hope the human cells will take over the job of forming the missing organ, which could then be harvested from the animal for use in a transplant procedure. As unreal as this idea sounds, it is a possibility in the near future and we can look forward to these progressions or we can try to postpone them. Regardless of what you choose to follow, it will come as quickly as you can imagine.

What happened to “Lake Ontario”? ORLANDO MAYORQUIN Staff writer

he drainage ditch between the new baseball and softball fields was removed because it failed to properly drain runoff water. It acted as a collection center and a drain for runoff, mainly from precipitation. However, the water would not percolate through the soil into the groundwater, as planned. Instead it would fill up the ditch and sit for weeks at a time, earning the nickname of “Lake Ontario”. According to school groundskeeper Jay Amaya, a layer of clay, algae and other materials 20 feet below the ditch were not allowing the runoff to percolate. This was apparent after heavy rains, as the ditch would over fill and also cause flooding of the new baseball and softball fields. Tilden Coil, the company that

built the new facilities, decided to get rid of this drainage system because of its ineffectiveness and the hazard it presented to students and children. “If a small kid were playing in there, they would slip down and we had high school kids jumping over the fence and messing in there. So it was just a safety hazard,” expressed Amaya. The construction company has since implemented its new solution to these issues. Last month, workers drained out the ditch and dug it deeper. They then laid down gravel into the hole, installed a tubing system and filled “Lake Ontario” completely in with dirt. This new concept is supposed to ensure the prevention of flooding and solve the issues of the past drainage concept. Its effectiveness, however, has not been fully tested as it has yet to face constant heavy rainfall.
