The couple bought Fleece as a baby in Riverside for the purpose maintaining their large yard and “keeping the weeds down,” states Vanzant. Fleece is known to run up and down along the fence with students from Ontario Maple Head Start/State Preschool, According to Angle, Fleece “loves kids.” Vanzant used to take Fleece on walks to De Anza Park, where people would ask to pet Fleece. The couple does not “do much” anymore except visit friends, but Ray works at an antique shop, Treasures N Junk, located on San Antonio Avenue. Their neighbors, as well as people passing by, enjoy the artifacts displayed, and Ray and Vanzant hope to keep it up until it’s possible.

ts beginning to look a lot like Christmas...now that December is here! Christmas lights, Christmas songs on the radio, kisses under the mistletoe...It is that time of the year to go out and get a Christmas tree! For most families, it is a tradition to go out and buy a Christmas tree. You can choose from a variety of trees: Tall, short, different types of pine, and flocking. You can’t beat decorating the tree with colorful lights along with different kinds of vibrant ornaments, and placing the traditional star at the top. The wonderful aroma that the tree releases can give your house that nice feel for Chirstmas! Although the Christmas trees can be a little messy, it is easy to take care of the mess! Depending on the floor type of where the Christmas tree is located, there are numerous ways to clean: sweeping and vacuuming. Other than that, decorating the tree with your family is a oncein-a-year tradition to do during Christmas! However, the shortage of Christmas trees has been reported. CBS Los Angeles stated, on November 29, 2016, when interviewing the owner of Olympic Christmas Trees in Rancho Cucamonga, that there will be a shortage of trees in Southern California this year. With higher prices in mind, why do we keep buying real pine trees for the use of Christmas trees? It’s typical for a tree to be real since that is the tradition that was started. Not only is it something to be proud of when someone walks in the door and sees it, but having that fresh smell is a good feeling. Unique styles can also be provided by choosing a fresh cut tree and it can be a fun experience to pick one out. In addition, by buying a real Christmas tree, you are helping the economy by creating jobs for those who work on tree farms and those who harvest them On the other hand, buying a real tree sheds needles and is usually a bit more pricy can be seen as a drawback. These trees, are, after all, natural and therefore, they need more maintenance. Furthermore, the risk of a fire is higher and what to do with it after the holiday season is over can be a problem you might face. Natural pine trees are not the only options; artificial trees can also be purchased at stores. Usually, they tend to be a lot cheaper over the course of time and vary in size and style. Artificial trees have been around since the 1960’s and have evolved to even incorporate lights. Some trees are even scented so they smell like the natural trees. When it is Christmas, the last thing one wants to worry about is cleaning. With artificial trees, your home can be kept much more tidy. Unlike real trees, artificial trees don’t shed pine needles that can cause a mess. Also, they don’t require much

work to be put up and can be used year after year. Junior, Jazmin Robles affirms she prefers artificial trees by stating, “Natural trees are messy and can cause a fire more easily, [also] when you buy an artificial tree, you can use it the next year and, that way, save money.” Artificial trees do Artificial Christmas trees are displayed in stores have drawbacks such as Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes and though. When Kmart. Christmas first came to be, real trees were used for decoration. With the use of fake ones, that tradition breaks. Not only that but once put down, they take up space at home where they need to be stored for the next year. Also, many are made of petroleum, a non-renewal material, which harms the Earth.

At Walmart, there was a crowd surronding the freshly cut Christmas trees.

oung adults are often told that their opinions are irrelevant and they are not capable of making a difference. However, a majority of protestors consist of young adults and millennials. Youth is often viewed as people who are uninterested in the community but once they are active in intellectual movements an increase in surveillance and police restriction is present. Young activists use media to their advantage and are inspired by movements they find mainly on social media. As a result youth contribution to protests often involve political injustices. malnourished Ontario man, William Batch, was recently discovered in an abandoned law firm after three excruciating months of starvation. At the scene, investigators acquired numerous items indicating that Batch attempted to devour inedible objects. Among these objects were soil-filled plant pots, business documents indicating a decline in success, a sofa cushion, and a marble countertop. One of the investigators, Detective L. Peyton, appalled by Batch’s actions, stated “In my 19 years of working as a detective, I’ve examined murder scenes, car accidents and things that just can’t be explained, but I’ve never seen anything so vile.” A small evidence bag that contained half a slice of pineapple pizza was the source of Peyton’s disgust. The detective is already planning his retirement, stating, “as soon as this case is over I never want to see the light of day again.” At the police station, Batch was determined to be mentally unstable due to his consumption of pineapple pizza. Summarizing his condition, a psychiatric ward worker — who has chosen to remain anonymous due to the severity of

the event — said “I’ll put it lightly. Someone like this can’t be out on the streets. Who eats pizza with pineapple on it? WHO?!” In an interview, Batch explained that he had attempted to eat anything besides the pineapple pizza. “I was completely aware of the only edible object in the room...but I just couldn’t do it, man...until one day I just cracked. I had enough.” It was 6:43 a.m when Batch decided to take a bite. Moments later, his whole body convulsed violently. His horrific cries for mercy were heard by Amanda Tyler, who decided to walk her dog that day. Tyler immediately contacted the police upon hearing Batch, who had to get his stomach pumped right away. Nicholas Sciortino, a local pizzeria manager, offered his input only after a lengthy coughing fit “Pineapple? On a pizza? Come again?” He promptly adjusted his hearing aid. “That’s the worst thing I’ve ever heard of!” Batch gave a word of advice to the rest of his community on his deathbed, “Never make the same mistake I did. I’m glad I’m dying.” Mental health professionals say Batch’s health is steadily declining.

he Christmas season does not begin at a concrete time each year, but this abstract time frame for the holiday season has come earlier in the recent years. On Nov. 9th, popular radio station Kost 103.5 kicked off the holiday season by playing traditional Christmas music. Classic songs including “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” and “Let it Snow” are floating in regular rotation in homes located in the greater Los Angeles area. While these songs usually bring joy to a person’s heart, they are being played too early. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in early November even though Thanksgiving has not yet passed. The holiday season is incomplete without the famous Starbucks Red Cup. According to the Starbucks website, “the anticipation begins in October, when the cups’ arrival begins to generate buzz on social media…” While favorite holiday drinks found in the Red Cups like Peppermint Mochas and Caramel Brulée Lattes were not released until November 1st, Starbucks fans began raving about them a month early even before Halloween had passed.

Popular holiday merchandise also hits the shelves much earlier than Black Friday, even though the traditional Christmas shopping period begins the day after Thanksgiving. At Target, it is recorded Early as November 15th, stores bethat the store begins hold- gan to display Christmas decor, such ing popular holiday sweat- as this display above at Lowe’s. ers after Halloween, weeks before the stressful shopping should begin. The holiday season in the United States is not one that is respected or appreciated. After Halloween, it seems almost as if we are running past Thanksgiving in an effort to make it to Christmas as quickly as possible. Christmas has turned into a commercialized holiday where people are more concerned about receiving gifts than celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. At the rate we are headed, the holiday season will become another meaningless part of the year.

Christmas around the world ALICIA GOVEA Co-Editor in chief

C

hristmas is a holiday that is celebrated throughout the world, and many celebrate for its religious background, while others celebrate without religious intent; either way Christmas has become a global holiday where traditions vary in each country and culture. In the United States, it is common to exchange gifts, decorate a Christmas tree and attend a church service. However, the United States is full of multiple cultures who celebrate different traditions brought from their ancestors . Christmas in Mexico is celebrated from December 12th to January 6th. Beginning on December 16th to Christmas Eve, La Posada is celebrated, a religious procession that reenacts Joseph and Mary’s search for shelter before the birth of Jesus Christ. There are nine Posadas. A traditional Philippines Christmas celebration also begins on December 16th. Many people attend nine early morning masses, and the last mass occurs on Christmas Day. The celebration continues until the first Sunday of January which is Epiphany or the Feast of the Three Kings. In the Philippines, a common holiday decoration is the “parol,” a thin bamboo stick with a lighted star or lantern on top. It is covered in colorful strips of thin plastic or Japanese paper and it represents the star that lead the three wise men to find Jesus as a newborn. The Christmas season in the Czech Republic is similar to many other European countries such as the Netherlands, where children receive gifts St. Nicholas Day on December 5th, and is an entirely different holiday than Christmas. Pakistanis celebrate public holiday to honor the founder of the nation, Jinnah on December 25th. Christians make up a small percent of the population, however spiritual seminars are held in order to prepare for “Bara Din” or the big day. This expression has become very popular even among Muslims in the country.

In Egypt, Christians are the only ones who celebrate the holiday as a religious one. Many Egyptian Christians belong to the Coptic Orthodox Church, where Christmas is not celebrated until January 7th. However, Advent begins on November 25th and lasts until January 6th, and Coptic Orthodox Christians fast for these 43 days. They are on a vegan diet and it is known as the The Holy Nativity Feast. Japan has only celebrated Christmas the last few decades as secular holiday. Gift exchanges are popular in Japan, especially among young couples. Children in Japan receive gifts from Hoteiosho, a Buddhist monk who acts like a Santa Claus; however he holds no connection to Christmas. The Christmas season regardless of where it is celebrated, is a time for family and joy, where their traditions bring them together.

Joel A. Poinsett brought a red and green flower from Mexico to America in 1828. The flower was fitting for the holiday season, and the plants are now known as poinsettias in honor of Poinsett.

A rare interview with Z-Money c. 2016 VINCENT ARELLANES & DANIEL VERGARA Staff writer Editor

We’re about to ask you questions that the student body is dying to know. Do you solemnly swear that you will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth? Yes. What’s your favorite dinosaur? T-rex. Why didn’t you pursue a career in the rap industry? Because education was my calling… not rap. If you did, what would your rap name be? My rap name would be…Z... Z-Dawg? *laughs* sounds good. No, Z-Money. How often do you watch Spongebob? Frequently. Really? Are you mad that they’re trying to take it of air? I didn’t know that. They think the new shows aren’t very good. I’m personally sad… Oh, you guys watch it a lot? Yeah. When you were kids? I still watch it, but it’s not as good as it used to be. I have little kids, so I try not to watch it too much, but sometimes they flip through the channel and it’s on. Which episode is your favorite? Oh gosh, I don’t know because sometimes they’re very inappropriate. I couldn’t tell you… I watch clips… I don’t watch an entire episode. Do you secretly want to wear skinny jeans? How do you know I don’t already wear skinny jeans? You’re making an assumption about me. So you just don’t wear them to school? I don’t wear them to school. I don’t want to secretly wear them, but I have definitely tried them on. They’re too tight.

6

What superstitions do you believe in? I don’t believe in any superstitions. Maybe when I was younger I would say “wear the socks if you’re in a certain sport and doing well.” Do you support “bee Live’s matter?” B-Lives matter? Like “black lives matter?” No-no, like BEE lives matter. Oh, I’ve heard this from several kids. Yes, that we can’t kill bees. Right? Because they matter? Yeah. Yeah, I’m really not one to wanna kill things in general. So as along as the bee isn’t bothering me, then I won’t bother them. Name a movie that scared you and describe the scene. The exorcist. Have you heard of it? There was a girl in it...and it was just a scary look. I don’t remember the scene. I haven’t watched horror movies since then. Do you ever want to watch it again? No, I don’t really like horror movies. Do you shave you legs? I don’t If you were to join the water polo team would you shave your legs? To help the team and help the sport and help us win, then yes. What is your favorite holiday? I would say Christmas. Is it just because of the presents? No,[its] because of family, people getting together. How do you feel about the Three Stooges? I think it’s silly. I see how people can find humor in it [or] in that mood, “let me just watch something that doesn’t make you think at all.”

“How do you know I don’t already wear skinny jeans? You’re making an assumption about me.” What do you think about the mohawk? Ehh, not my thing. For me to do that...I’d do the bowl-cut way before the mohawk. Would you shave your head? Yeah, I think I would. If it was for a cause or a reason. I need to have a reason I can’t just do it to it. It doesn’t seem like you’re doing no-shave November, what’s going on with that? Cause no-shave November doesn’t look very good. I can’t really grow a beard. If I could, I might. If you were able to grow it out, would you dye your beard? No, I can’t grow it out, period. I can [get] a goatee going, but yeah… If you could pick any other mascot what would it be? I don’t know, I like cats. I like

things that are fierce in a way-Turtle? No. Turtles bite hard. Ontario Turtles would not go. It would have to flow… Ontario Jags that flows. Tell us the story of your first kiss. First kiss? You know that’s not a story most people want to share. First girlfriend? That was probably late middle school...early high school years, What I called a girlfriend, I don’t know if she would call it that. Was it cool to have a girlfriend at a young age? I think it was an experience. Good night Mr. Zaldivar

s the nation reels from the original clamor and unrest of the U.S. election results, the wish of many California residents remains crystal clear--a complete secession from the federal Union. In Southern California, the desire for separatism was most apparent on election night. Thousands marched on the streets and on university campuses to protest the election results, and the #Calexit hashtag trended on Twitter. Although the idea of a secession sounds ideal to a Democratic Californian, the entire state would be plagued by political and economic complications. For example, 27.3% of California residents identify as Republican. If they were to move out, the state’s output or gross product income (GDP) would decrease dramatically. Thus, the “6th largest economy” figure that Democrats like to highlight, would be rendered meaningless. In Texas v. White, state secessions were ruled unconstitutional. Only when a state receives two-thirds approval of both the

House and Senate and 38 state legislatures can it exit the Union. The original interest of a Calexit has died down and many have accepted the outcome of the election. But for the California National Party (CNP), who have been advocating secession since August 15, Calexit is a very real goal. The Yes California Independence Campaign has already gained considerable support for advocating a state secession by capitalizing on a Republican victory. A passage of their website reads “In the Spring of 2019, Californians will go to the polls in a historic vote to decide by referendum if California should exit the Union, a #Calexit vote.” 2019 is a long way off. By then, the desire for a Calexit will either have died down significantly as Trump’s presidency exceeds California’s expectations, or receive a resurgence of interest during the 2020 presidential campaign. Many Americans are dissatisfied right now as Donald Trump’s inauguration draws nearer. In times like these, we should be unified as a country and consolidate our position as the most powerful and influential

any Californians have been trying to split the state of California into six different states. Currently, there is only one governor to satisfy all 38 million California residents. Californians who are with this change formed the “Six Californias” Initiative, while those who opposed the initiative established the “One California” group. A Silicon Valley venture capitalist, Tim Draper, originally set a ballot initiative. This initiative would require California to split into six different states, respectfully called “Six Californias.” The ballot was first announced in December in 2013 and was supposed to be placed in both the 2014 and 2016 November ballot. However, the ballot failed to make it both times, due to the Initiative needing 1.37 million signatures The to be listed on the ballot. SixDraper poured 4.9 Calimillion dollars into the state fornia break-up effort. free country in the world. For many, #Calexit sounds comforting, but any supporters behind the movement are, simply put, forgetting about the rest of the country. Highlighting the potential issue of Democratic representation, Dylan Parisi of the Daily Nexus said “A removal of [California’s] 55 electoral votes would make it a daunting task to elect Democratic candidates [in the rest of the United States] in the future.” In protesting Donald Trump’s victory, the best decision for California Democrats to make would be to not vote for a Calexit at all.

Silicon Valley, Central California, West California, and South California. Existing counties with common characteristics, including culture, socio-economic background, legislative needs, and political affiliation, would comprise the new, individual states. The Initiative also proposed that all of California’s debt would be distributed proportionally based on the population of the newly created state. It would end all tax collections and spending by the state of California. It would also create new representative governments that would set and determine changes with a respect to taxes, spending, and other public policies; all which may lead to a regional economic recovery.

n November 9th, 2016 there were two attempts at walkout protests by students of all grade levels. These protests were in reaction to the Presidential election that took place the day before. Most people were unaware of the last minute plans to walk off the campus during school hours. Personally, I am all for peaceful protests when it comes to a common goal, but I couldn’t understand the point of this protest. Anger fuels our actions and these events were a great indication of our impulsive decisions. If we all take time to ponder what this action was to achieve, we would see that no matter how many strikes or protests we have there is only so much that we can do as a small community. Did we get some media coverage? Sure, it was talked about for a week or so, but the conversations have died down. One way to make a lasting impression and make sure disappointing election results do not occur again: educate yourself as much as possible. We are the next generation of voters, skipping class for any reason will only make us fit into the stereotypes, like Hispanic “gang bangers” and lethargic African-Americans, that linger over our heads. Education is a crucial part of life now. A high school diploma is needed for many fast food or even retail jobs. It seems that students no longer have interest in school nor do they want to grow academically. We have to take advantage of a free education while we still can. Ontario High School has an overwhelming percentage of Hispanics/Latino students, including myself. During the presidential race, there were many comments thrown

Labor unions promoted this holiday in contract negotiations. U.S. Representative John Conyers and U.S Senator Edward Brooke introduced a bill in Congress to propose that King’s birthday be a national holiday. In 1979, the bill needed five votes in order to be ratified. Arguments were made that a paid holiday for federal employees would too expensive. In addition, they also disputed that the holiday would contradict the tradition since King himself never held public office.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s most famous speech is “I Have A Dream.” The speech was delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Dr. King had a dream of a multiracial nation that was united in peace and justice. This holiday also celebrates the values of equality and tolerance that he expressed as his dream for America. Different countries such as Japan and Canada have recognized this holiday. In fact, in the city of Hiroshima, the mayor holds a banquet at his office as a message that connects the city’s call for peace with the human rights message that King originally proclaimed.

The Mandela Effect ERIK ORTIZ

N

Staff Writer

elson Mandela was an anti-apartheid revolutionary, a philanthropist, and the first President of South Africa. On December 5th, 2013, he died of a respiratory tract infection. Or did he? After the pronouncement of his death, an extensive number of people claimed to have recollection of Mandela dying in jail during the late 1980’s. Many even believe to remember news clips of his funeral, a memorial in Africa, and an emotional speech given by his widow. This confusion became serious and eventually quite frightening; however this was only the birth of something far more mysterious. As more incidents very similar to this began to unfold, it became known as the Mandela Effect, which is when someone has a clear memory of something that never actually took place in this reality. Ever since the origin of this confusion transpired, there has been a continuous line of these occurrences taking place in everyday life. One example of the Mandela Effect is the spelling of the popular chocolate-covered wafer bar, KitKat. The belief by many is that this candy bar was spelled Kit-Kat. “There has always been a dash! For as long as I can remember there has been a dash. But the other day I bought a KitKat and there was no dash! What is this??” Sandra Ortiz claims. Nevertheless, the reality is that KitKat has never been spelled with a hyphen, nor is there any existing evidence of the chocolate bar being spelled that way. Another example of a Mandela Effect that bewildered the minds of countless individuals, was the absence of a monocle on the eye of Rich Uncle Pennybags from the board game, Monopoly. Many claim to believe that he has always had a monocle.

There has been many more recent cases to which this has been believed to have taken place, in fact the situations have been gradually increasing. Incidents like these vary as people claim to notice differences in movie quotes, tv shows, names, cartoons, physical appearances, brand names, and a lot more states of being. There are many theories regarding how and why these occurrences are taking place. However, the primitive and most accepted theory is that time-travel has or will be invented, and that someone has went back in time to alter something, therefore resulting in people remembering things different from the way it is currently. Although the idea of time travel might seem unrealistic for many, with the rapid advancements in technology we’ve had over the last decades, maybe the possibility is not as far-fetched as you think. It is also important to take into consideration that the process of time travel could have taken place billions of years from today, which is also more rational and can really make one scratch their head in wonder. However, opinions and perspectives on this matter vary as there are just as many skeptics who will refuse to believe this as a possibility, and who can blame them? All in all, maybe a great deal of people are just flat-out
