01/ Baldor and Bislkar Baldor and Bislkar is an illustrated children’s story about some creatures that live on an ‘exotic asteroid’. It relies on the phonetic properties of words – on onomatopoeia – and how the meter of a rhyme can be cut up with consonants. My treatment was to respond to the texture of the sound of the words. The story relied on this aspect of language more so than narrative, so I created textured, layered paintings, wiggly typography, and textured drawings. The project resulted in ARTWORK FOR BABIES. There are currently 4 babies who own items from this project.

02/ JUK JUK LP artwork I was asked to come up with a logo and design for the debut LP release by musician JUKJUK on Four Tet’s label ‘Text’. I was given free-reign on this project as long as I produced something that the artist could use in screen-prints at a later point. Considering this was the 12th release on the label and the title of the A-side track, ‘Winter Turns Spring’, I thought I would reference an aspect of the mayan calendar and numerology. I used a deep gold-mustard yellow with black and white for the pallet.

03/ AGURRE RECORDS LP Artwork: I was given free-range when asked to produce artwork for AGUIRRE RECORDS split release from artists Tidal and Rambutan. I drew modular geometric shapes and shadows crossed with textured illustrations of ambiguous characters responding to the ambiguity and eerie periodicity of the sounds created by Tidal and Rambutan

04/ ‘The Influencing Machine’ book cover The client, Strange Attractor Press, specified 3 things for the cover of Mike Jay’s novel, The Influencing Machine: 1) Geometry 2) Beams 3) Red and Ivory The author requested that I include an image of the infamous ‘influencing machine’ which I drew from a sculpture of ‘The Air Loom’ created by artist Rod Dickinson in collaboration with Tyne and Wear Museum and their technical team. My treatment for this job was (post-reading) to include drawn elements (lines, beams and machine) and render them ‘quasi-technical’, as the principle character is an architect. The book is full of disorientating tense experiences and ephemeral, transient moments which I tried to capture by using fades and lines to disorientate the edges of the book and to confuse a perceived horizon within the image.

05/ ‘Modis et Amminiculum’ This was a personal project exploring the relationship between form and function in design. It also served as an opportunity to start acquiring some experience of craft practice and surface design, incorporating drawing I had been carrying out in the dissecting room at Saint George’s University. It’s striking how the development of cooking (as a ‘technology’) has assisted the development and evolution of culture and anatomy - enabling us to digest proteins with greater ease, access more nutrients from our environment and kill parasites off meats. So I wanted to make work exploring domestic objects and anatomy.

06/ ‘Modis et Amminiculum’ Book I produced a book to archive all the Modis et Amminiculum works. The book served as an experiment exploring how different printing methods; digital, risograph, silk screen, etching and embossing could combine, exist and compliment each other in a single publication or object. (I’ve included some picture of the plates I used for printing.)

07/ SYMBIOSIS Symbiosis was a multi-disciplinary collaborative project based on character design. The brief was; to think of something (a concept, need or want) that is very important to you, to make that concept into a character, to make that character into a 3D costume/ maquette or effigy, and finally work in groups exploring how these characters – representing needs/wants/necessary requirements etc, might interact with each other. We decided to make costumes and a stop-motion animation based on dance; so that we could make larger more detailed models and have greater control over their movements. Here are some photos of our costumes, a few stills, a poster and flyer for an event in Brixton Village screening the animation and exhibiting the costumes.

08/ EROSION OF THE HOLDERNESS COAST Holderness is an area of the East Riding of Yorkshire, on the east coast of England. The Holderness coastline suffers the highest rate of coastal erosion in Europe: 1.5m on average or 2 million tonnes of material a year. I decided to begin making a series of prints recording the erosion of a site I have selected. Using the same plate and various methods that loose and gain details in response to what is lost as time passes.

09/WORKSHOPS Heres a page dedicated to showing some of the workshops I have run over the last year.

RECENT PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

J I G G LI N G AT O M S Imperial College/ Queen Mary’s University/ The Rag Factory, London – Funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council and the Institute of Physics Janurary – October 2012 Co-organiser, constibuting artist and presenter. Jiggling Atoms is an creative multi-disciplinary project exploring particle physics - as part of the Institute of Physics Public Engagement Grant Scheme. It investigates the use of visual metaphors in scientific literature. A unique aspect to the project is that 20 artists attended 5 lectures written and delivered by Malte Oppermann and myself, with a final lecture by Dr. Ben Still. The lectures - held at Blackett Laboratory, Imperial College London - showed how physics is done, why its difficult, why it’s important and why we should care about it - explaining mechanisms behind what Richard Feynman aptly describes as the ‘inconceivable nature of nature’. Contributing artists will be making work having been given briefs written by our resident scientists. The exhibition due to take place during the first 2 weeks of October 2012 at The Rag Factory. In partnership with the Institute of Physics and the Science and Technology Facilities Council. T E S S E L L A T I O N W O R K S H O P : Maths and Design Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls, Ealing, London, October 2011 (repeated for small groups in November) Workshop co-ordinator. Helped to devise and run a Maths and Printing workshop for 210 Year 9 students, demonstrating ways in which maths, geometry, art and design intersect.

I LLU S T RAT I O N THE JOURNAL OF PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY (JPRAS) September 2011 (Published in December 2011) Illustrator Worked closely with authors and co-authors, ensuring the illustrations were supportive and relevant to the literature. BUCKMINSTERFULLER MATHS AND ENGINEERING WORKSHOP Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls, Ealing, London, June 2011 Workshop volunteer As part of STEMNET volunteering program I helped to build a geodesic dome on the school grounds with ten 15-year-old students. The dome will remain as a permanent feature of the school, used as an alternative learning environment. MODIS & AMMINICULUM Camberwell College of Art, Saint George’s Hospital, January – June 2011 Interdisciplinary project on scientific illustration and surface design. Carried out work, drawing in St. George’s Hospital Dissecting Room, working collaboratively with medical professionals. Culminated in production of ceramic work. Gained experience in glaze mixing, transfer printing, textile design (screen and digital print), upholstery, painting, lithography, etching, inDesign, and large format digital printing and framing. T W O ’S A PA I R V&A Museum, London September 2010 Illustrator Commissioned to create work for interactive game at ‘V&A Late’ event, where two identical paintings were created independently.

‘THE WHOLE UNIVERSE IN A GLASS OF WINE’ Gallery on Redchurch Street, London June 2010 Co-organiser and Illustrator Collective exhibition about Richard Feynman. Worked to organize and curate event – making relevant work, planning lectures, related workshops, sponsorship and drink sales. Snake Pitt, with Bright FX Glastonbury festival 2009, 2010, 2011 Artist Painting set-design for the Snake Pitt venue at Shangri-La, Glastonbury Festval. Produced large-scale paintings in response to a space/brief, working in collaboration with expansive team under difficult conditions and to a tight deadline. ‘OUR WORLD ’ summer-school art workshop Dulwich College, London June 2007 Workshop co-ordinator Responsibilities included organising and running art workshops, lessons and activities for 7 - 10-year-olds, dealing with Health and Safety regulations, sourcing appropriate materials, working with children and lesson planning.
