Our Vision Is...

Our Mission: To strengthen Jewish life and identity in our community, provide for Jewish people in need, and promote support for Israel. OUR MISSION The mission of The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee is to strengthen Jewish life and identity in our community, provide for Jewish people in need, and promote support for Israel. We are committed to our vision of a vibrant Jewish community. We feel that one of the best ways to build community is by collaborating with people and organizations who share our vision and values. We are so fortunate to have many partners, both religious and secular, who embrace our community and are willing to work together on new and exciting initiatives that impact the lives of individuals here in Sarasota-Manatee and around the world.

ENHANCING JEWISH LIFE Our Federation leadership understands that engagement is vital for the future of our Jewish community. To that end, we present an assortment of community events each year designed to enhance Jewish life and identity for all in Sarasota-Manatee. These programs afford all Jews with opportunities to gather, socialize, network and connect. We also sponsor a variety of programs in

partnership with synagogues, Jewish groups, and cultural arts organizations – from food festivals to lecture series to Jewish films—and so much more! We believe deeply in the importance of interfaith initiatives to help build a strong and healthy community. Our Jewish Federation is viewed as the premiere interfaith connector in the Sarasota-Manatee area. Through our Robert and Esther Heller Community Relations Committee, we have established strong partnerships with the Sarasota and Manatee Ministerial Associations, the Catholic Diocese, Sarasota Chapter of the NAACP, Unidos Now and hundreds of clergy throughout our two county area. We believe that ongoing educational opportunities are essential to combatting bigotry, racism, bullying and anti-Semitism. Our focus is on increasing the teaching of acceptance and understanding within our public schools and through our arts community; building relationships with other minority communities; and continuing to strengthen our relationships with faith-based and not-for-profit communities. Our Federation works to ensure our Jewish future by committing valuable resources to programs that build Jewish pride and

identity in our children and teens. From PJ Library for our youngest constituents to teen programs that teach leadership skills through a Jewish lens, we provide numerous opportunities for children of all ages to connect with one another and the larger community.

JEWS IN NEED Giving tzedakah (responsible philanthropy) to our Federation provides the necessary financial resources to fund the myriad of services, programs and activities to sustain, enhance and grow a strong, vibrant Jewish community. For more than a decade, The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee has been a community leader in granting funds for vital programs and initiatives. Our Federation strives to improve the human condition, especially for those in need or at risk, whether in our local community through our partnerships with JFCS of the Suncoast or All Faiths Food Bank, or in Israel and in 60 countries around the world through the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the Jewish Agency for Israel. Our Overseas Granting Committee and

the Women’s Giving Circle grant life-saving and life-changing dollars to support projects and initiatives in Israel and around the world—whenever there are Jews at-risk. Caring for the most vulnerable in our community is one of our highest priorities. Our Federation provides the bulk of the funding for the Jewish Healing Program at JFCS of the Suncoast. Through the Jewish Healing Program, we provide a full-time Community Chaplain, as well as help for Holocaust Survivors and those in need of assistance with food, rent and utility payments. Our goal is that all Jews throughout the world are able to live and age with care and dignity.

ISRAEL/OVERSEAS INITIATIVES We work together with our partners to bring Israel to our community through various events and programs; as well, we have a long-standing commitment to provide Israel travel experiences to teens and young adults, families and leadership of the Jewish and (continued on page 12)

(continued from page 11) secular community. We are proud to be an ardent supporter of Israel, through providing missions so that all ages can be exposed to the miraculous Israel experience first-hand; through Israel celebrations and programs presented locally; through education and advocacy on Israel’s behalf; and through funding of critical social and human services in Israel. Our support for Israel is fervent and enduring. We are

committed to helping individuals in our community create meaningful connections with our brothers and sisters in Israel through programming, education and travel opportunities. Those early Jewish settlers came for the same reason people of all faiths come today. Sarasota-Manatee is paradise. But Sarasota-Manatee is more than sunny weather and beautiful beaches. With help from many of the talented and generous Jewish people in Sarasota-Manatee, this area has developed a wonderful reputation for the arts, medical care, and circus tradition. FEDERATION’S ROLE For 60 years our Federation has been helping Jews locally, in Israel and around the world, promoting community every step of the way. In the late 1950s, Jews in Sarasota-Manatee, who were just beginning to have a noticeable presence in the general community, became concerned with the needs of their brothers and sisters around the world, particularly in Israel. They decided it was time to have a central organization to coordinate the activities of the community. On February 25, 1959, The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee was established as the Sarasota Jewish Community Council. At

that time, there were approximately 2,100 Jews in the area. In 1980, when the population had grown to 6,000 Jews, the name of the organization was changed to the Sarasota Jewish Federation. In 1982, the name was amended to the Sarasota-Manatee Jewish Federation to give full recognition to the constituents who lived in the northern county and whose numbers and influence were growing. And in 2009, the name was amended to The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee. In the early years, the then Sarasota Jewish Community Council operated out of an office at 1900 Main Street until 1981 when the office moved to 2197 Ringling Boulevard. With property values increasing and the Jewish population continuing to grow, it was imperative that the Federation have its own space. The groundbreaking for the Klingenstein Jewish Center on McIntosh Road, south of Fruitville was held in 1985, with the building opening in August 1986. Over the years, Federation leadership and Jewish community donors helped to found three partner Jewish agencies: Jewish Family and Children’s Service (1984), the Sarasota-Manatee Jewish Housing Council (1988) and the Flanzer Jewish Community Center (1989-2007). For many years, the Federation’s function was to raise funds and distribute them through unrestricted allocations locally (through

1 9 85

Vigi 2018 l for Sol idatir y,

the three partner agencies) and overseas (through its parent organization, The Jewish Federations of North America; formerly known as United Jewish Appeal/Communities). The allocations were split between local and overseas needs. In recent years, the Federation moved toward a granting model. The Federation now has no unrestricted allocations – all monies are given through the granting process, ensuring that programs support and advance the Federation’s mission and priorities. In addition, all granted programs, including Federation-implemented programs, are now subject to an evaluation process to verify that programs meet stated goals. Additionally, the Federation has expanded its program offerings over the years. Our annual Women’s Day, The Jewish Film Festival, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Lion of Judah and Pomegranate Luncheon and Community Lecture, all becoming more and more popular each year. For 60 years, The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee has led the way in building a warm and welcoming community for Jews in Sarasota-Manatee. Today, in 2019, we begin a new era of Jewish life with the renovation and expansion of the campus, now named The Larry Greenspon Family Campus for Jewish Life. We look forward to serving the Jewish community for the next 60 years and beyond!

Congregation Ner Tamid In the summer of 2005, a group of Jewish friends met to discuss their idea of forming an inclusive Jewish congregation that would be member focused and member led, and that could survive on exceptionally modest dues. They named themselves Chavurah (a group of friends) Ner Tamid, dedicated to keeping alight the flame of Jewish spirituality, culture and history.

NORTH REGION DIRECTORY

The first challenge facing this core group was how to create a viable congregation that could offer a full range of services and programs to its members on dues which were set at double chai ($36) per year. It was agreed that lay leadership would officiate at services and that the Chavurah would rent space for services and religious school. Milestones piled up in rapid succession. Rena Morano agreed to serve as Rabbinic Associate; Rabbi Barbara Aiello became the Rabbinic Advisor; Miami’s Temple Beth Am donated a Torah scroll which resided in the portable Ark on wheels alongside

of Ner Tamid’s original six inch tall kosher Torah. The first Jewish Living and Learning Sunday School was inaugurated with a class of seventeen children. A book club (ChavuRead) was begun, a caring committee established, and Tikkun Olam projects proliferated. The first Bar and Bat Mitzvahs were celebrated in 2005. Several members celebrated jointly and individually as adults, followed by several teens, some of whom journeyed to Italy to have their ceremonies with Rabbi Aiello. Weddings were celebrated and funerals were observed. In those early years, Ner Tamid began several traditions that continue today, such as serving holiday dinners at Our

Daily Bread, collecting food and blankets for migrant families, and collaborating with Jewish Family and Children Service on projects to help seniors and school children. Ner Tamid also innovated several programs and activities, some of which have since become popular in the wider Jewish community, including Tu B’Shevat seders, and affiliating with Shabbat Across America and Canada. We are famous for our original Friday evening Shabbat at Table, our annual Jewish-Italian dinner and cultural celebration, our joyous Passover seders, and our moving High Holiday services. Temple Beth El Bradenton/ Lakewood Ranch Temple Beth El is the only Jewish congregation of Manatee County, serving Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Parrish and nearby communities. We are a Reform congregation. Our worship style is highly participatory. We have a full time Rabbi, Michael P. Sternfield and an exceptional Cantor, Deborah

Bard. They conduct services on Shabbat eve and Shabbat morning. There is a delicious Oneg Shabbat following services on Friday night. Shabbat morning services include the Torah reading and Torah study with the rabbi. We observe all of the Jewish festivals and Holy Days. In addition, the congregation celebrates American civic holidays such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Thanksgiving, Mother’s Day and more. Our services are held on the campus of the Braden River Presbyterian Church, 5150 Peridia Blvd, near the intersection of SR 70 and Lockwood Ridge Blvd. The sanctuary is light-filled and lovely.

Parking is abundant. The Temple has a one day a week religious school and prepares young people for bar/bat mitzvah. Temple Beth El has an active Men’s Club and Sisterhood as well as a choir and band. The congregation is highly inclusive, welcoming families and individuals of diverse religious and cultural backgrounds, as well as LGBTQ people. All who wish to participate with us are welcome. Annual dues are very affordable and we never turn anyone away for lack of ability to pay. We are definitely a ‘do-it-yourself’ congregation, keeping our operating expenses very low, thanks to the volunteer efforts of our members. High Holy Days services are open to all without charge. Sarasota Jewish Chorale An ensemble of more than 30 volunteer singers of all levels, the group is dedicated to keeping Jewish musical culture alive by sharing its rich heritage in music with the greater Sarasota community—young and old. The Chorale has a repertoire of Jewish music from the early Renaissance compositions of Salamone Rossi to the works of contemporary composers such as Nurit Hirsh, David Burger, Debbie Friedman and Michael Isaacson. The songs take the chorale on a journey around the world and back through history with Chassidic melodies, modern Israeli themes, music of the Holocaust, rhythms of African Jewish tribes, Ladino folksongs, much-loved

Yiddish tunes and the Great American Song Book. The group performs at synagogues, assisted living centers and at local events. It also presents one large concert in the spring. Rehearsals are Thursday nights at The Larry Greenspon Family Campus for Jewish Life. Congregation Kol HaNeshama Congregation Kol HaNeshama (KH) originated from the commitment of three couples who envisioned an inclusive community for prayer, learning, holidays, friendship and tikkun olam. Theirs would be a synagogue for everyone: informed by tradition; egalitarian and participatory; intellectually honest; spiritual and uplifting. Above all, warm and welcoming. KH has realized the founders’ ambitions by providing meaningful services, a wide range of enriching programs and a strong congregational family. Shortly before celebrating its 10th Anniversary year in 2017, the

Shabbat. The more contemplative Saturday morning offers a balance of prayer, song, Torah and thoughtful discussion. Both the Reconstructionist Movement’s Siddur and the Conservative Movement’s Chumash provide a framework for KH services. All activities and services at KH aim for a personal, contemporary expression of Judaism. Early on, KH established a weekly newsletter and an annual Scholar-in-Residence weekend. The congregation incrementally added more holiday observances, adult education classes, and other programs. Today, the congregation offers services on every Jewish holiday and on every Shabbat. In addition, members enjoy a wide range of programming, including Books & Bagels, a Jewish Cinema Club, weekly Torah study, a meditation group, a hesed committee, a social action committee, and a unique lunch-speaker series at which individual members introduce themselves in depth. So it is that Congregation Kol HaNeshama, proudly representing the realization of

congregation reached its most significant milestone by installing Rabbi Jennifer Singer as full-time rabbi. (One of the original members, she was named Education Director in 2010 and Co-Spiritual Director the following year, and Spiritual Leader in 2013.) Today’s KH reflects the wisdom and cooperation of the founders, the early board members, and the founding members. Together, they initiated the convivial potluck luncheons following Shabbat morning services. They decided to “alternate” Shabbat services; Friday evening one week, Saturday morning the next. The relatively short Kabbalat Shabbat service—filled with music, dancing and singing—brings KH members together for a joyful, musical start to

As people engage with TBS, they are drawn in by the activity that happens within the kehillah, both within the four walls and out in the community. Our religious services are a place where people feel at home and comfortable no matter their previous experiences. Those who have grown up in conservative communities express the memories they have with the customs, such as when they stand or sit, how they engage with the Torah or the melodies that are used. Those with other Jewish backgrounds or those who have come to Judaism as adults

are surprised by how comfortable they feel. Our rabbi, Rabbi Michael Werbow brings a warmth and welcoming spirit to all we do. He infuses our prayer services and activities with spiritual messages to connect our everyday experiences with all our tradition has to offer. The connection made within services is felt throughout other programming at the temple. Adult Education offerings elicit high level thinking about Jewish history, Jewish thought and living as a Jew in the modern world. Complicated topics are confronted and brought to the attention of the participants. Jewish Ethics and our relationship with Israel are among the topics we explore. Book reviews and movie screenings bring to the forefront current thinking on a wide range of topics. In addition, we learn about our fellow congregants when they lead the educational offerings and share stories of their interesting lives.

Temple Sinai Looking for a Jewish home? Temple Sinai welcomes you with a smile, open arms and hearts. Serving Reform and liberal Jews since 1991, Temple Sinai embraces young and old, diverse backgrounds and families of all kinds into the congregational extended family. Together members joyfully share in living Jewish life within the congregation and in the community. Temple Sinai was founded March 1991 by five families seeking an alternative to the available Jewish religious institutions in Sarasota. In early 1992, with over 300 family memberships and a growing Religious School enrollment, a building on Kenilworth Street was purchased. Temple Sinai continued to grow and a new facility was built. The dedication held September 18, 2005 had over 700 in attendance. Rabbi Geoff Huntting and Chazzan Cliff Abramson have created a participatory

worship style for Shabbat and holiday services that blend uplifting Jewish music with contemporary liturgy. The traditional Rhythm and Jews Family Erev Shabbat Services with the sounds of the Bruno Trio infuses the congregants with lively and joyous spirit. July 1, 2019 Temple Sinai is delighted to welcome Rabbi Samantha Kahn, as Rabbi Huntting steps back into retirement. Rabbi Kahn was formerly Assistant Rabbi of Congregation Emanu El in Houston, Texas and for six years served as Bay Area Director for Interfaith Family, a national resource supporting interfaith couples exploring Jewish life. She supported nearly 2,000 families, offering a complete range of rabbinic duties with the clergy team. Temple Sinai offers something for everyone, always with Jewish learning and community at the core. Accredited by The Association of Reform Jewish Educators, the religious school facilitates exceptional learning, Bar/Bat Mitzvah and Confirmation. The Gan at Temple Sinai, our early childhood program, meets all the requirements of the State of Florida and is fully accredited as a pre-school. The temple’s youth program starts with youth activities for Grades 3-5 and youth groups for Grades 6-12 that are affiliated with NFTY (The Reform Jewish Youth Movement). Lifelong learning for adults include brown-bag lunch discussions with Rabbi Huntting, the Sounds of Our Sanctuary with Chazzan Abramson, Wisdom of the Sages with Reb Ari Shapiro, as well as film and dinner series, Scholar-in-Residence, Educator-in-Residence, Lunch and Learn, to name a few. The Women of Sinai and Men’s Club sponsor a full calendar of social and meaningful events. The Social Action and

ISRAEL & ADVOCACY

Connecting With Our Roots Federation Advocacy Programs and Missions HELLER CRC Since 2009, The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee has been grateful to Robert and Esther Heller for their generosity and idea of creating the Heller Israel Advocacy Initiative, now known as the Heller Community Relations Committee (Heller CRC). The program was established to advocate for peace and security for Israel through education, information and community action; to raise awareness of and actively confront global anti-Semitism and radical Islam; and directly address anti-Israel activities in our community. Some ways in which the Heller CRC advocates for Israel and against anti-Semitism are: • Educating faith communities about Israel, Judaism; boycott, divestment and sanctions movement; and anti-Semitism • Holding events with Israeli dignitaries and experts on Israeli history and culture • Supporting Hillel and our Jewish college students • Planning community and Interfaith missions to Israel

HOLOCAUST AWARENESS In honor of those who died and those who survived, we offer educational and awareness-raising programs, and resources on the Holocaust such as: • Lectures and Events: The Federation hosts educational lectures and events themed around the Holocaust. These programs serve not only to educate, but also to enhance cultural awareness of the Jewish and general communities. • Community Outreach: Some programs are so powerful in their message that we simply must share them with the Sarasota-Manatee community at large. To do this, we work with community and business leaders to bring Holocaust education directly to the public.

86 SHALOMSRQ

• Holocaust Speakers Bureau offers teachers and community leaders a unique opportunity to have a Holocaust Survivor speak to their students or groups. Last year, nearly 2,500 community members of all ages in schools, churches and membership organizations were impacted by this program. • Resources: We provide a list of Holocaust-awareness partners and respected resources and links to their websites on our Holocaust web page, JFEDSRQ.org/Holocaust.

MISSIONS The Jewish Federation participates in, organizes, and offers grants for several exciting, educational and life-chaniging missions to Israel each year, such as: • Teen Programs: Bob Malkin Young Ambassadors (BMYA), March of the Living, Send a Kid to Israel Program (S.K.I.P.). • Adult Programs: Jewish Womens Renaissance Program missions, Women’s Giving Circle mission, Interfaith Mission, and other program-specific missions.

Missions are designed to give participants an enjoyable, exciting experience while creating awareness or fullfilling a project mission that benefits Israeli quality of life, and rejuvenates one’s own sense of Jewish spirituality by connecting with the land and its people.

EDUCATION Beyond the educational programs offered by the Heller CRC, the Jewish Federation’s advocacy web page (JFEDSRQ.org/Advocacy) is a helpful resource on advocacy programs and how to successfully advocate. For more information on Federation advocacy educational programs and missions, please visit our website at JFEDSRQ.org.

Sister Cities Association of Sarasota Sister Cities Association of Sarasota (SCAS), the official international arm of Sarasota, carries out international exchanges with Sarasota’s eight Sister Cities. Tel Mond, Israel, one of our Sister Cities, is located in the beautiful Sharon Valley, seven kilometers north of Kfar Saba and east of Netanya. Sarasota’s connection to Tel Mond began in 1982 when Tel Mond became part of a new project called Project Renewal, formed to rehabilitate distressed neighborhoods in Israel. Following exploratory visits by Jay Saphier, Linda Rosenbluth, and Jack Weintraub, the Sarasota-Manatee community took on a five-year commitment to raise funds for Tel Mond. Thus began a longterm relationship between the two cities with Tel Mond becoming an official Sister City in 1999. Tel Mond has participated in Embracing Our Differences, Florida Studio Theatre Young Playwrights and various other projects in Sarasota. Luncheons highlighting one Sister City each time generally take place the third Wednesday of the month. The Speakers Bureau and Meet & Greet take place the first Thursday of the month at Selby Library or a restaurant. SCAS is governed by a board of directors and each Sister City has a city director. Rabbi Jonathan R. Katz, our area’s Community Chaplain, is the city director for Tel Mond. Sister Cities Association of Sarasota 111 S. American Friends of Magen David Adom (AFMDA) Magen David Adom is Israel’s ambulance, blood-services and disaster-relief organization, serving as emergency medical first-responders for the state’s more than 8.5 million people. MDA is the only organization mandated by the Israeli government to serve in this role, but it’s not a government agency, so it relies on people like you for funding. Every Israeli knows someone whose life has been changed by MDA, whether as a volunteer or a patient. The people of Israel count on MDA EMTs and paramedics to rush to the scene of every emergency. In Israel, that can be anything from a terror attack to a heart attack. But they also count on the Americans who

feel the urgency of Israeli ambulance sirens from across the globe and join MDA’s rescue efforts with their generous support. The FIDF Palm Beach-Broward region has proven itself as one of the organization’s most active communities, which is no small feat considering that FIDF has over 150,000 loyal supporters across 20 chapters in the U.S. and Panama and is currently raising over $100 million a year. The commitment toward FIDF’s mission has been growing since the establishment of this 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization in 1981. It was founded by a group of Holocaust survivors who recognized the courage of the young Israeli men and women who join the IDF at age 18 to uphold the difficult task of defending the State of Israel. As the only organization working directly with the IDF to determine and fulfill the well-being needs of the soldiers, FIDF assumes the responsibility of caring for Israel’s soldiers in an effort to ease the burden they carry on behalf of the Jewish community worldwide. FIDF Palm Beach-Broward supporters have embraced Israel’s soldiers, and their truly exemplary

contributions have helped the organization carry out and expand its activities: granting college scholarships to combat veterans who could not otherwise afford higher education, supporting Lone Soldiers with no immediate family in Israel, funding advanced prosthetic devices for wounded soldiers, providing financial assistance to soldiers inneed and their families, sponsoring weeks of recreation and recuperation for entire battalions, adopting battalions and brigades, and caring for the widows, orphans and other family members of fallen Israeli soldiers. Builds Bridges Advocates through Government Affairs ^ Remembers the Holocaust ^ Supports Hillel ^ ^

Government Affairs Meetings with elected officials are increasingly important as we see support for Israel eroding around the world. Advocating for Jewish interests starts locally and often goes to Washington D.C., advocating in our local school systems and championing national bills.

Holocaust Heller CRC assists school teachers, synagogues and churches as well as local libraries to “Never Forget.” The Holocaust Speakers Bureau brings personal stories told by survivors themselves to school children and adults alike, leaving lasting memories for those who hear them. Such stories generate change, creating upstanders not bystanders.

Bridges We build bridges between people by visiting synagogues, churches and civic groups to make presentations about Israel, anti-Semitism and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS). In addition, we send clergy and community leaders on missions to Israel to experience and learn about the land while forging friendships that deepen and continue back home in Sarasota-Manatee.

Hillel Hillel is the “Jewish Home Away from Home” for Jewish students in college. Your CRC and Federation support Gulf Coast Hillel in its pursuit to create meaningful and engaging holiday and educational programs on local college campuses.
