4 AUGUST 2022 Lapid launches prison abuse investigation
BY DAVID SAFFER
Prime Minister Yair Lapid has launched an investigation into the Prison Service following horrifying revelations a female prison guard was raped by a Palestinian terrorist at Gilboa Prison terrorist.
Allegations of a gagging order over this case and historic sexual abuse cases against other female guards have been made.
The IDF soldier, identified by an alias Hila, served from 2014-17 and was a guard at Gilboa.
According to reports, the perpetrator is convicted of murdering Israelis but had special privileges from prison authorities to move around the facility.
Shin Bet security agency has denied claims it was aware of sexual abuse at Gilboa but discarded evidence.
Hila has launched a NIS 200,000 crowdfunding campaign over the terrifying incident and for other female guards abused by Palestinian inmates.
Former guard's lawyer Keren Barak labelled the expose “the most shocking case of sexual assault” of an IDF soldier by a terrorist with “blood on his hands” since the inception of Israel.
Barak has called on Israeli citizens to help raise money to aid the rehabilitation
Prime Minister Yair Lapid visits Israel Prison Service of Hila’s life. A commanding officer was reportedly questioned on Monday by police over allegations female guards during his tenure at Gilboa were sexually assaulted by Palestinian inmates. Lapid visited Ofer security prison this week and ordered authorities to implement new measures following the expose. A hotline for conscript female guards has been brought forward by two weeks.
Lapid spoke with male and female prison guards about their experiences.
He said, “Were there no Prison Service it would be impossible to live in the State of Israel because it would be flooded with crime, attacks and terrorists. You are the last line of defence.”
During Lapid’s weekly cabinet meeting he said it was “unthinkable” an IDF female soldier was raped by a convicted terrorist. “The incident will be investigated,” vowed Lapid. “We will not stand aside if there is concern that a conscript female guard in the State of Israel was raped or harassed by terrorists.” He added, “We’ll make certain that the former IDF soldier receives support and brings those responsible to justice.” Israel Prisons Service Commissioner Katy Perry said there would be a “zero-tolerance” to a gag order. President Issac Herzog was sickened by the reports at Gilboa prison. "How have we come to this that women who were protecting us were deserted?" he said. "Every Israeli woman must be safe and anyone working on behalf of the country must be protected. PHOTO: AMOS BEN-GERSHOM (GPO) He added, "The scars of such injuries suffered by the soldiers can never heal. We must thoroughly investigate those cases and bring those responsible to justice.” A state commission of inquiry is investigating Gilboa Prison over a number of misconduct allegations including six Palestinian inmates escaping last year. The inmates were captured following a nationwide manhunt.
AAD backs Rangers action
Action Against Discrimination chairman Jonathan Metliss has backed Rangers FC banning a spectator from matches for performing a Nazi salute.
It comes in the wake of similar incidents involving Newcastle United and Burnley supporters. “This behaviour is clearly intolerable and unacceptable,” he said.
The fan appears to have made the salute during Rangers’ friendly match with West Ham at Ibrox Stadium. He was seen wearing the strip of Millwall, which he allegedly covered with a jacket. As the Ibrox security team ejected him from the ground he allegedly did more salutes.
A Rangers spokesperson said, “We condemn the appalling actions of this individual.”
