BY DAVID SAFFER Maccabi London FC won a tight Cyril Anekstein Cup first round clash against Brady FC with a 65th minute Ben Kohler penalty at Rowley Lane.

Both are struggling in the Premier Division so this was an opportunity to advance in the cup.

The hosts dominated the first half but struggled to find a cutting edge against an organised Brady side. Maccabi continued to boss play and eventually got their reward with Kohler’s spot kick.

Maccabi boss Laurence Judah was pleased with the victory and a chance to move forward in the competition.

“We were delighted to get the game on and was unaffected by poor visibility,” he said. “Despite having the majority of possession, we were pretty ineffective and didn’t create clear cut chances. We made some half time changes and while the second half performance wasn’t great, we had enough opportunities to score four or five.” He added, “Our objective for the second half of the season is to have more consistency in team selection and if we can do that we’ll move up the table.”

In other ties, Oakwood A romped into the next stage with a 9-0 drubbing against Straw Hat Pirates.

Basso hit six goals. Mike Cohen, Max Foster and an own goal completed the rout.

O’s manager Daniel Blitz commented, “It’s obviously great to win by such a big margin, but the most important thing is getting our name in the hat for the next round.” He added, “We had a really rocky start to the season but have got some momentum. We go into 2022 with a lot of
