BY DAVID SAFFER England captain Harry Kane is the second player to reach 50 goals for his country.

Kane slotted home a late VAR-awarded penalty against Germany in an entertaining Nations League 1-1 draw in Munich on Tuesday night.

Only Wayne Rooney stands ahead of him on 53 goals but it is only a matter of time before the current skipper sets a new mark. Kane was level with Boys of 66 legend Bobby Charlton.

England will be encouraged by their comeback in Germany who led early in the second half from Jonas Hofmann’s deflected 50th-minute strike. Gareth Southgate’s side withstood a lot of pressure and deserved a share of the spoils from a clash where substitute Jack Grealish was praised for his performance.

England suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Hungary in the opening Nations League game. They host group leaders Italy at the weekend.

Kane told Channel 4, “We kept going and played our best football in the last half an hour. Good to get the goal and a shame not to nick it at the end.” He added, “At 1-0 behind we showed good character to get back into the game and get a result. We are playing against a very good Germany side. We still have important matches but the World Cup will be here before we know it.”

Southgate told BBC Sport he was pleased with the reaction to the Hungary defeat.

“We’ve had some good results at Wembley but we wanted to come away from home and get a good result,” he said. “It’s so important we bounce back from a disappointing result.”

Regarding Kane he commented, “The fact he has 50 goals will be the centre part of the story but his all-round game, the way he led the line, the way he competed, the way he pressed from the front for us today was exceptional. His quality to drop deep, I know people say he drops too deep, but you need a player that can come and link the game. He gives us so many options.”

England head towards the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar in November where they will meet Wales at the group stage after an emotionally charged play off final win against Ukraine in Cardiff last Sunday.

Welsh talisman Gareth Bales’ first half deflected free kick was the pivotal moment of the game. Andriy Yarmolenko was the unlucky player to head the ball into his own net.

Wales had goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey to thank for an astonishing display to keep Ukraine out. Time and again Hennessey pulled off saves to ensure the Welsh made the finals for the first time since 1958. Wales line up in Group B with England, United States and Iran. England vs Iran and Wales vs United States is on November 21. Wales vs Iran and England vs United States takes place November 25. The final games, Wales vs England and United States vs Iran, are on November 29. Wales captain Bale told Sky Sports, “The result is the greatest in Welsh football history. It means everything, what dreams are made of, we’ve been working towards it since I first came in here. Words can’t describe how we feel at the moment.” Wayne Hennessey told Sky Sports, “It’s incredible. That’s the best game I’ve had in a Welsh shirt. Gareth is so dangerous from free-kicks, he’s an
