Its time for Yaakov to leave home and get married as his parents have told him and he sets off for Charan. On his way he passes the site of the future Beit Hamikdash and stops to rest. He has a dream about a ladder with angels going up and down. G-d talks to him and tells him amongst other things “I am with you” reassuring him on what is going to be a fraught few decades ahead. Yaakov awakens and pledges to give tithes to G-d and continues to Charan where he meets Rochel who was his cousin. She takes her home to her father Lavan and Yaakov offers to work for Lavan in exchange for getting Rochel as his wife. Lavan tricks Yaakov and gives him Leah instead. Eventually Yaakov also marries Rochel and the 2 maidservants Bilhah and Zilpah. There are eleven boys and one girl born in this week’s Sidra with the youngest boy in next week’s. Yaakov and Lavan discuss what wage Yaakov should receive for his efforts in looking after Lavan’s flock, and Lavan cheats many times so Yaakov performs some wonderful methods to ensure he receives his due earnings. Yaakov takes his family and leaves Lavan’s house on his return journey to the Promised land. Further ups and downs to follow. W E D D I N G Q L G D W F L G O A D A O A H J D

Hadassa twirled in front of the mirror. She was practising for her audition for this year’s school play. It was her first year in high school and her first chance to be in the school play. Every year girls and their mothers from many other schools came to watch her school’s play because it was always so good.
Hadassa dreamed of playing the lead part, Nina. One of the PTA mothers had written the play of Nina and her sisters, who escaped from the evil Nazis and went on to live in a strange secular world. They had to learn how to stay Jewish in these difficult surroundings, with no Jewish family or friends to help. Hadassa absolutely loved the idea and had spent all evening learning Nina’s lines ready for her audition the next day.
Lunch break came and instead of eating, Hadassa and her friend Yocheved lined up excitedly waiting for their chance to audition for the play. One by one, each girl was called in. Some came out looking sad and some looking happy.
“I’m so nervous,” said Hadassa to Yocheved. “I can’t believe I’m doing this.”
Yocheved was about to reply, when Aviva from Year 12 waved Hadassa inside.
Hadassa was shaking with nerves, but when she was asked to deliver the lines, she tried to imagine being the real Nina. Being scared but also determined to stay alive and keep Hashem’s mitzvos.
“That was excellent.” Aviva said to Hadassa when she had finished. “I really think the part of Nina will be yours. But please don’t tell anyone as we have to finalise it first. We will put the final list up on the school notice board on Friday.”
Hadassa left the room almost skipping with excitement. Yocheved tried to ask her how it had gone, but Hadassa just smiled and ran off.
After Yocheved’s audition, they met up just before the end of lunch bell rang.
“I know we aren’t meant to talk about it,” grinned Yocheved. “But it looks like I might get to play one of Nina’s sisters!” “Wow,” said Hadassa. “That’s amazing, I am so happy for you!” Hadassa desperately wanted to share her good news from her audition also, but she decided not to. She could wait a few more days until the list went up and everyone knew.
For the next three days, Hadassa could not stop smiling. She was sure that the role of Nina was hers. She was too excited to pay much attention in class. Even when Mrs Levine talked about the story of Rochel and Leah being swapped on their wedding day, Hadassa found it hard to concentrate.
Finally, Friday arrived. The list was up! Hadassa and Yocheved pushed through the crowds of girls to see the confirmation of the parts Aviva had told them were theirs.
Hadassa’s heart sank. Next to her, Yocheved started shouting. “Oh my goodness, thank You Hashem, I can’t believe it! I am playing Nina!” Everyone around her started to cheer her.
Hadassa couldn’t believe what she was seeing. But there it was in black and white on the notice board. Next to her name was not Nina, but Ziesle, Nina’s younger sister.
Hadassa turned away. What should she do? Should she go to Aviva and explain to her the mistake? That somehow she and Yocheved’s parts had got mixed up? She really wanted the part of Nina.
She looked over at Yocheved’s glowing face. Yocheved looked so happy at all the attention and cheering she was getting from the rest of the girls there. Hadassa couldn’t take that away from her. It wasn’t Yocheved’s fault that the mix up had occurred.
Hadassa remembered what Rochel Imeinu had done for her sister Leah. There was always next year’s play, she thought as she went over to congratulate Yocheved. At least it was only a part in a school play.
