why prison reform

Under current anti-terror laws you can be locked up and repeatedly questioned by police for up to 28 days without being charged. You might not even be told why you are there. Pre-charge detention refers to the period of time that an individual can be held and questioned by police before being charged with an offence. For individuals suspected of terrorism, the maximum period is currently 28 days – seven times the limit for someone suspected of murder. On 6 December 2007 the Home Secretary announced new anti-terror proposals, which include extending this maximum limit to 42 days. The UK already has the longest period of pre-charge detention in the western world, and there is no evidence that a further extension will make us any safer. There are serious flaws in the anticipated Government proposal, including: Powers for the Home Secretary to extend pre-charge detention in individual cases beyond 28 days without any evidence of a genuine emergency situation. Weak Parliamentary oversight as MPs are not allowed to vote when powers are activated. Inadequate judicial oversight, as the courts will not be able to review the decision to extend pre-charge detention. Liberty believes that a further extension beyond 28 days is unjust, unnecessary and will not - as the Government has argued - make us any safer. In 2005, Liberty campaigned successfully to block Government proposals to raise the then limit of 14 days to 90 days. With your help, we can stop them again.

Blogging can help tell the real story of life in the public sector and contribute to the debate about the future of services, according to Tom Reynolds, the London ambulance technician behind the Random Acts of Reality blog. Reynolds, speaking at the Guardian’s Public Services Summit in St Albans, Hertfordshire, today said blogging also helped to promote understanding between employers and employees as well as between different departments in the same organisation. He said: “ The main focus [of my blog] is about my ambulance work. It’s a true account - it isn’t Casualty , it’s not an edited together documentary. It’s about what has happened when I come home after a day’s shift. It’s not political, it’s not buffered - it’s the raw truth.” Reynolds told the conference that his London Ambulance Service employers “are quite happy” about his blog and he believes that the public relations department also welcome his voice “because I can talk about things that they can’t”. He said he had used his blog to talk about the government’s “unrealistic” eight minute ambulance response times while other bloggers - most recently those from the police service - have used their blogs to highlight issues around paperwork, which they said was preventing them form doing their job properly. Bloggers also get the chance to write about the people they care for and can draw attention to flaws in services and help influence change, Reynolds explained. He told the audience of public sector managers and executives: “Blogs give individuals a voice - if a certain policy is working or not your blogging workers will tell you about it.” He added that the practice also had other workplace benefits: “Blogs help communication between groups and other groups, between me and the public and between the public and me because they get to feed back. It promotes understanding and breaks down barriers which are often put up in the workplace.”

Everything we buy has an impact on our planet. Buy Nothing Day highlights the environmental and ethical consequences of consumerism. The developed countries - only 20% of the world population are consuming over 80% of the earth’s natural resources, causing a disproportionate level of environmental damage and unfair distribution of wealth.

As consumers we need to question the products we buy and challenge the companies who produce them. What are the true risks to the environment and developing countries? The argument is infinite - while it continues we should be looking for simple solutions Buy Nothing Day is a good place to start. In our absurd consumer society we are becoming zoned out zombies, shuffling from shop to shop chanting BUY, BUY - BRANDS, BRANDS! For BND 2008 we want you to become these ZOMBIES and stalk the high street.
