About The Top Companies For Graduates To Work For You probably expect a ranking of the top companies for graduates to work for to tell you who the top companies for graduates to work for are, right? That’s what we thought! So we were pretty surprised to learn a couple of years ago that existing graduate employer rankings showed which companies students thought were good employers, rather than the companies whose actual employees said they loved working there. This meant that year after year, students were just seeing lists of which companies had the best graduate marketing or even, in some cases, the best consumer brands, rather than those who actually offered the best working conditions for their new employees. We decided that this was no good and so we put together The Top Companies For Graduates To Work For. Every year we go out and survey thousands of employees who have recently graduated and who work for UK employers. We ask them to rate all of the important points about what it’s really like to work for their company – such as Work/Life Balance, Career Progression and how much Responsibility they have (see p9 ‘How The Rankings Work’ for the full details on how this works). The result is that the Top Companies For Graduates To Work For is entirely meritocratic. It ignores factors such as how well known a company is or how much they spend on their recruitment marketing – both of which have a huge effect on other employer rankings. Instead it simply provides a list of the very best companies for graduates to work for – according to the people who work there. In short if you can land a graduate job at one of these employers, you are likely to be a very content employee in a couple of years’ time. What the list shows is that a lot of well known companies are also great places to work but don’t be surprised to also find that a lot of companies that you may have never heard of are also great employers – they just may not have the same brand recognition or recruitment marketing budget.

About TheJobCrowd.com TheJobCrowd.com is the UK’s leading graduate employee review site. It’s best to think of us as being like a ‘TripAdvisor for graduate jobs’ – we are a platform on which graduate employees come and write anonymous reviews about what it is really like to do their job and work for their company. As a result, TheJobCrowd is without doubt the best place to get an inside view into what it is actually like to be a graduate employee at hundreds of UK employers, across every graduate career. We ask reviewers to answer a series of key questions, such as ‘What do you actually do on a day-to-day basis?’, ‘What are your working hours?’ and ‘What’s your salary?’, as well as to rate their satisfaction in key areas such as Responsibility, Career Progression and Work/ Life Balance. All of our reviews are anonymous so you know you are getting the most truthful insight possible – straight from people doing the job or working for the company that you might be interested in. Even better, we ask every reviewer to provide advice for someone applying to their role – so you can get insider tips from someone who has applied, interviewed for and actually landed the job in question. Every company and career has a central page where you can view the key ratings and averages, aggregated from all the responses that we have received for them – or you can dive in and choose to read any of the thousands of first hand reviews. Plus we have hundreds of graduate jobs advertised on the site – so you can read all about a role and then go straight on to apply to it! Finally, each year we go through all of the reviews that we have received in the last twelve months in order to identify who the very best employers are and we produce this guide to tell you all about them. We think that all of this makes TheJobCrowd the very best place to research a career or employer, please take a look as we really hope you will agree.

The Top Companies

How The Rankings Work Every year thousands of graduate employees write anonymous job reviews on TheJobCrowd.com. As well as providing detailed answers to questions such as “What are the best and worst things about your company, each reviewer rates their satisfaction with a series of attributes of their employer.

These include: Career Progression Colleagues Company Culture Compensation and Benefits Enjoyment of Their Role Environmental Awareness Responsibility Training and Support Work/Life Balance The Top Companies For Graduates To Work For in 2012/13 is based entirely on these ratings, collected in reviews posted between 1st October 2011 and 15th July 2012. We take an average of the marks provided and then average that score across all the reviews submitted for each company. Provided that the company has received enough reviews in the year to qualify (the number required depends on the size of the company), their average rating determines whether they made the Top 100 and if so, in what position.

How To Use The Results & Our Disclosure The Top Companies For Graduates To Work For is entirely meritocratic. If an employer receives good enough ratings from enough graduate employees, then they make it onto the list, irrespective of anything else and free of any charge.

Rankings Page

Double Page Profile

The Top Companies pages are split into 2 types – Rankings Pages and Double Page Profiles. The Rankings Pages are the same for every employer. They are presented in order of position, with each employer receiving the same sized entry (4 entries on each page). They tell you the position the employer came and what their average rating is, as well as featuring a short summary of what their reviewers said is particularly great about working there.

The Double Page Profiles are paid for by employers in the list who want more space to promote their graduate opportunities. Each Double Page Profile comes as soon after that employer’s ranking entry as possible. Double Page Profiles include a much longer write up (also written by TheJobCrowd) and a summary of the top 5 areas in which that employer rated best, as well as key information and an advert provided by the employer.

For more information on any employer, remember that every company has a dedicated page on TheJobCrowd.com, including: • Aggregated data displaying their average ratings, salary, working hours and more • Pages dedicated to interview & application advice for that specific company

•E very single one of the individual reviews written about that company You can find the dedicated links for each employer at the bottom of each Rankings entry.

The Ideal Candidate

by

TheJobCrowd is all about giving you the view from the inside, so we asked Sharon Goymer, the Resourcing Manager, Development Programmes at National Grid to tell us what she looks for in the ideal candidate. “In all my 18 years recruiting for Development Programmes I’ve yet to see the ‘Ideal Candidate’ but what I have seen are some strong individuals who have that magic blend of intelligence through their academic learning, great people skills and behavioural capabilities – almost that essence of street wise confidence. These tend to be people who have pushed the boundaries outside of academia to take on leadership roles in a sporting, working or voluntary capacity. The most important message I’d like to portray is that most recruiters are not looking for a finished product. We don’t expect you to be perfect but for you to give us evidence to indicate that you have the potential to grow and develop quickly.

The Top Companies Shine, Stand out from the Crowd One of the biggest frustrations my team and I have is the volume of applications we see each year and how very similar to each other they are. We spend a huge amount of time thinking of good questions to help an individual to shine and stand out from the crowd. The most important learning is that you need to spend time constructing your answers to these questions, don’t expect to be able to do it quickly, I certainly couldn’t. Here’s a tip: once it’s done you can use it time and time again! Put yourself in the shoes of your friends and then describe yourself, do it honestly otherwise it will only trip you up later in the process. Put some weight around your answers, put it into context for us – i.e. How many were in your team? How much money did you save the company? How long did you have to do the project? What did you learn from it and what would you do differently next time? Paint the picture so that we can truly gauge who you are, what you have achieved and how driven you were to deliver results. All of this applies to CVs as well, I agonised over mine for weeks to make it as good as I could possibly get it and it has certainly opened doors for me and now I only have to update it each time with my latest experience.

The Importance of Passion Don’t underestimate enthusiasm and passion. I know interviews can be scary places but recruiters will make allowances for individuals who show real interest in the organisation and the role. When you have that person in front of you that has researched the company and can talk in general terms and not just specific facts, they really stand out. And there are no excuses now with the internet and corporate websites – in some cases your challenge is to pull only the key information from the mass available. This exercise in research should be part of your self selection process when you are deciding what organisation you want to join.

Dress for success, arrive on time and have your evidence to those all-important competency based questions ready. They are only examples of what you have achieved in the past i.e. ‘Give me an example of how you have analysed a problem?’ or ‘Tell me about the most difficult situation you have had to deal with?’ Just tell them the story – start, middle and end – in a very concise way and don’t forget to put weight to the answers! It’s good to note that the majority of companies these days are very open about the competencies they use as part of the recruitment and selection process. If you take a step back and analyse for yourself, I’m sure you can come up with a list of competencies that you think are relevant for the role. Match your examples to these and you will be away – and I guarantee you are going to be so much more confident in the interview. But make sure your examples are honest and true otherwise you’ll only be digging a very big hole for yourself.

No Magic Formula Now for the final stage of any process, an Assessment Centre. It’s a combination of different exercises contained within a day so that we get to see the real you. Now, while you can act for an hour during an interview and portray the image you think we want to see, doing that over a complete day is almost impossible. That’s not why we do Assessment Centres, it’s because recruitment is a risk. We don’t have that special formula to indicate that you are the one we need to employ and can therefore justify spending thousands on your future development. An interview only provides us with 15% confidence but an Assessment Centre, because of the combination of different exercises, moves that confidence level to 57%. Seeing you in group exercises, presentations, interviews, in-tray exercises etc. really does give us a more accurate picture of you. My best advice is, be yourself, don’t try to be something you’re not or to second guess what we are looking for. If you do, you risk masking your natural strengths which are important to us. Get fully involved in the Assessment day and make sure you communicate those great ideas. If you say nothing then how can we know? We’ve yet to develop the talent of reading minds. Pace yourself, it will be a long day and that goes for the assessors too. Just because we are on the other side, it doesn’t mean it isn’t challenging for us as well. Have confidence in your own ability, we do. After all, you have successfully passed a number of stages already. Just give us the evidence on the day we need to say yes to you. Most important of all, enjoy the day and the whole experience, don’t take it personally if you are not successful but learn where you have gone wrong, ask for feedback. Good luck.” Sharon Goymer, Resourcing Manager – Development Programmes, National Grid

Pre-Application Careers Advice If you want to give yourself the very best chance of landing a great graduate job, there is a lot that you should do preapplication in order to build up the profile of the perfect candidate. Here are some great tips, based on the advice offered by our reviewers, to do just that:

Careers Fairs

Work Experience

Careers fairs offer a great opportunity for you to find out more about certain companies in a relaxed and informal setting. They also allow you to practice your networking skills. Be sure to get email addresses and follow up on any useful contacts, even just to thank them for taking the time to talk to you. And remember it’s not just about practicing – it is certainly not unheard of amongst our reviewers for a good impression at a careers fair to lead directly to an interview and beyond!

You’ve probably heard it a thousand times before, but there is no substitute for getting as much relevant experience as possible. This not only shows commitment to the field but it could provide you with priceless connections in the industry. Furthermore it will give you a hands-on understanding of the role and let you know whether it is in fact the career path for you.

“Do your research, know the products and reach out and contact someone who is doing the role already, especially at career fairs.” Associate Consultant, Consultancy Services, Microsoft

Careers Service Don’t underestimate the knowledge and experience that exist in your university’s careers service. They can offer you invaluable advice as well as being a great source of information.

“Get as much work experience as possible, not only does it look good on your CV, but you get a chance to be one step ahead by meeting the grad recruitment team.” Surveyor, Agency Team, DTZ

Get Extra-Curricular Getting involved in a number of activities will hone the different key skills and competencies that every recruiter will look for – such as leadership and teamwork.

“Make sure you fill your university time with extra-curricular activity. A degree is necessary but nowhere near sufficient.” “Go into your careers service at university… Assistant Brand Manager, Procter & Gamble there’s a huge amount of information to help you, like guides summarising each law firm. Use this information to apply to the firms that suit you and learn as much as you can about them.” Trainee Solicitor, Simmons & Simmons LLP

Research, Research, Research If you want to impress before and during an interview, you need to make sure you’ve done your homework. Taking the extra time to research the company, the role and the industry can be the difference between moving on to the next stage of the application process or not.

The Company

The Competition

First and foremost, trawl through the company’s website and get to know it inside out. As well as giving you key background to the company, the website may provide crucial tips on what type of person they are looking for and what competencies they want candidates to display.

Be sure to research the company’s rivals so that you are able to explain why you want to work for them above other firms in the industry. This will also help you to hone in on the factors that this particular company specifically emphasises.

“Go on the website, understand the company ethos and all the brands and divisions. Take time to understand the competencies they are looking for.” Management Trainee, L’Oreal

“It is very important to do your homework and make sure you know, not only about the firm you are applying for, but also what makes them different from their competitors.” Assistant Broker, Risk Solutions, Aon

The Industry

Get an Inside View

Even better, do some online digging on the wider industry and current market to get to know exactly where your prospective employer fits into it all. You’ll also want to make sure that you stay abreast of any current events that might affect your industry (e.g. by reading a decent newspaper or The Economist) as employers often use this to gauge whether you are genuinely interested in the career.

Get in touch with the company’s HR department to get as much information about the role as possible. This can help you to find out exactly what they are looking for. Try to speak to, or at least hear from, people who are at the company or who are in similar roles elsewhere. Good sources are careers fairs, your personal network and, of course, TheJobCrowd.com!

“Have a solid knowledge of current industry news, for example, what bill is being debated in the House of Commons (if relevant), what new aviation legislations might come into play...” Customer Experience Assistant, easyJet

“The best resource is someone already on the graduate scheme who can offer their advice and share their experience.” Retail Graduate Scheme, The Co-operative Group

Your CV Now that you’ve done all your research and planning, it’s time to put it all into practice. Your CV is your shop window to sell yourself and show off all that you have to offer. Here are some top tips to get your CV looking great:

Keep it Brief

Be Specific

Your CV should be no more than two sides. Employers want the facts put simply and will most likely be put off by a CV that is several pages long. You can elaborate on anything when you get to the interview – much better to get them interested in you and curious to know more than to have them switch off before you even get a chance.

Don’t be lazy, tailor your CV for every job and avoid clichés. Make sure the bulk of your CV is relevant to the specific role you are applying for. If you are also able to provide a cover letter or personal profile, make it just that – personal. Avoid generic phrases and relate it to the role.

“The CV should be short and to the point (I’ve never seen one that was too concise).” Developer, Yudu, Softwire

Think Hard Your CV is your chance to show off your experience, your competencies and what makes you a great candidate so take the time to really think about yourself in order to make sure you get everything that is relevant down. Work experience, extra-curricular activities, good references, your passions – it’s all good. “Know yourself – what have you done and what skills does this demonstrate?” Project Engineer, Capability Development, Rolls-Royce

18

.com

“Unless you put a lot of effort into it and demonstrate exactly why the role is right for you and why you want to work for the company, you are wasting your time.” International Graduate, Sales and Markets, Vestas

Check, Check and Check Again Imagine how frustrating it would be to go to all that trouble perfecting your CV only to miss out on an interview for spelling the employer’s name wrong. Get at least one other person to check it and make sure your contact details are correct (and that your email address and voicemail message are appropriate!). “Ensure there are NO errors on your CV. You are competing with 11,000 applicants, they need to reduce this number drastically, therefore silly mistakes will not pass their screening.” Commercial Manager Trainee, Marks and Spencer

The Top Companies

Interview So after all your hard work you’ve been invited for an interview. It’s time to show the potential employer the very best side of you. Remember, this is your chance to impress and, as one reviewer wrote on TheJobCrowd: “your interviewers won’t know anything unless you explicitly tell them” so make sure you do the best possible job of selling yourself.

Prompt and Smart

Be Prepared

Be early, but not too early! Aim to be there about five or ten minutes before the interview.

When it comes to the interview, you need to be ready to talk about anything and everything on your CV and to show how this has prepared you for the specific role, so take the time to go back over your application.

It is better to be overdressed than underdressed. Having said that, try to dress appropriately for the company. If you are applying for a trendy fashion magazine, you don’t want to turn up in a stuffy black suit.

“You cannot bluff these interviews… know your own CV like the back of your hand.” Graduate Surveyor, Savills Commercial Ltd

“Be professional but friendly. Turn up early, be smartly dressed and well presented (first impressions count).” Web & Graphic Designer, Marketing Team, FDM The interview is as much (if not more) about Group gauging what kind of person you are as it is about whether you answer the questions correctly. Remember that your skills and achievements will only take you so far – you Be sure to communicate the fact that you also need to be friendly and easy to get along have done your homework and that you with. After all, they are looking for someone have a genuine interest in the company who they will have to work with every day. and the industry. What makes a great employee? Having a think about what skills and attributes a star graduate, working for the company that you are applying to, might exhibit can really help you to focus on what the recruiters will be looking out for. All of our reviews ask the question ‘what qualifications and skills do you need to be great at this job?’ and the answers are a must-read before applying. Here are some of the common themes:

A Quick Learner

Organised and Able to Prioritise

Obviously, most roles will require specialist knowledge and abilities that you will not be expected to already show. What’s important is to show that you are constantly learning and taking in new information as this is what will give you an advantage.

It’s pretty hard to think of a role which won’t require you to be well organised and able to deal with your workload under pressure, whilst also prioritising efficiently.

“A determination to learn is the main thing – there is so much to learn and so many people to learn from!” Petroleum Engineer, Offshore Operations, BP

Get Stuck In Having a positive attitude will go a long way. Enthusiasm to get stuck in and willingness to take on extra responsibility will impress people at all levels of the company – and thus showing these attributes to the recruiter will be a big thumbs up. “It is good to be able to show independent working abilities, to show that you can take the initiative and develop a project without needing constant support.” Business Graduate, Healthcare, Siemens

20

.com

“It’s important to have good time management, with a lot of things going on at once you need to be able to prioritise.” Account Executive, GSK Account, Billington Cartmell

Be a People Person Unless you are looking to be an astronaut on a one-man space mission, chances are you will be working with others day in and day out, so good people skills are a must for almost any job in any sector. Whether it is dealing with clients or interacting well with your colleagues, you need to show that you can work with other people in a productive and professional manner. “You must be a good people person if you want to progress rapidly – you meet a lot of people, all of whom are willing to help you out.” Graduate Engineer, National Grid

I FOUND MY NEW

CHEMISTRY SET UNDER A CAR BONNET

As a chemist, I didn’t know much about engines. But after spending a day taking one apart and putting it back together, I really got to grips with how the different components influence lubricant development. Improving fuel economy means reducing friction. And one way to do that is to use thinner oil. But because that can cause engine parts to wear out more quickly, we’re always developing new molecules and formulas to get over those issues. It’s been great using my chemistry knowledge to research and help solve real-life problems like this.

Our ideas don’t just take off, they’re out of this world. Blue sky thinking. Why stop there? At Mars we like to boldly go… Well you know how the rest of it goes. And launching M&Ms into space as the official snack of the space shuttle is right up there when it comes to an example of what we mean. You see, we offer our associates the opportunity to think and operate in innovative ways, across all of our billion-dollar brands. Which means you won’t just have the freedom to shape our privately-owned business. You’ll have the freedom to develop and grow as an individual. Think of it an infinite space. But the final frontier? Well, that’s up to you. mars.co.uk/graduates

TOP COMPANIES for graduates to work for 2012/13 The following pages list the full rankings for this year’s Top Companies For Graduates To Work For – based solely on the reviews of actual graduate employees. Each employer has a short summary written by TheJobCrowd and based on their employee reviews. All of the “quotes” in the summaries come directly from graduate employees. Where an employer also has a Double Page Profile, those pages come as soon after the relevant employer’s ranking entry as possible. Double Page Profiles include a much longer write up (also by TheJobCrowd) and a summary of the top 5 areas in which that employer rated best, as well as key information provided by the employer. You can find more information on every employer, including average ratings, salaries, working hours, interview tips and every individual employee review by following the dedicated weblink at the bottom of each company entry.

This no doubt contributes to the 4.5/5 rating that PKF received for “excellent training and support”, something which is substantiated by the many reviews mentioning the high calibre training in a large number of different skills, ranging from leadership to tuition in the latest software and of course, the professional qualifications that you can gain. With many international associated firms (to which graduates have the opportunity to move – the most popular destination being Australia), PKF appears to achieve a perfect balance of being “large enough to work with substantial clients but small enough that you feel like you are a valued member of staff”.

“The opportunities offered at Transport for London are unrivalled and the company is willing to accommodate your development and learning needs”. This is a sentiment expressed by one of our reviewers and shared by many graduates. TfL has a “strong commitment to staff development”, whether it be personal, professional or technical and, combined with a “very supportive environment”, including an excellent graduate-scheme network that can assist graduates throughout their training (“the company does really provide you with a lot of support and training”), it is clear why the company scored a rating of 4.3/5 in the ‘Training & Support’ category.

Another common positive noted by employees at Transport for London is the opportunity to get involved with a range of “exciting, important projects” that are constantly “changing and improving London and its transport network”. On a daily basis, graduates are given influence over “fascinating” issues that affect one of the busiest, most cosmopolitan and fastestgrowing cities in the world. It is hardly surprising therefore, that TfL received a rating of 4.3/5 in the ‘Enjoyment’ category. Consider that the company also records a top 5 rating for ‘Work/Life Balance’ (4.6/5) and a top 10 rating for ‘Compensation & Benefits’ (4.4/5) and it’s pretty clear why the scheme is so popular with its graduate employees. The former is a result of the “flexible working and sympathy to personal circumstances” plus an “amazing” 30 days annual leave while the “great benefits” include a very competitive starting salary, “excellent pension”, free travel in London (“for you and a friend!”) and numerous gym and leisure discounts. Add in the fact that “the long-term career prospects are exceptional” and TfL have really delivered a winning programme.

A huge amount of comment is also reserved for the Benefits and Compensation 3.9 work environment – both for the working atmosphere but even more so, for the office itself: “the work facilities are amazing!” exclaims one graduate. These include a free gym for employees, an in-house doctor & dentist and even a beautician. There is also a “fantastic” subsidised canteen which according to several reviews, serves food that is both cheap and “great (and I’m really fussy about food)”. Another positive that many reviewers mention is the fact that “there are lots of opportunities for development and growth”. Many of these opportunities come in the form of international secondments, with the chance to work in a wide variety of locations around the world but reviewers also praise the calibre of client secondments available. There is an acknowledgement from graduates that many of these benefits stem from the fact that Linklaters is “one of the world’s top law firms” (“It is the best” says another graduate) – which also means that “you get to work on the top deals”. Overall, Linklaters’ reviewers feel that “the firm is extremely well run” with a “great infrastructure” and “a lot of support whenever you need help”.
