Do You Want To Work For A Great Company? If you want to work for a company that is rated by their own graduate employees as a great place to work, then you’ve picked up the right book! Most rankings of graduate employers list the employers who have the highest brand recognition among students, rather than the companies whose actual employees say that they love working there. That’s all well and good, except for the fact that it favours companies with very large marketing budgets, who take on lots and lots of graduates (and so can spend more money on advertising in total). These companies may not be so great to actually work for. Meanwhile there are hundreds of other employers who actually give their graduates a wonderful working experience with tonnes of responsibility, great career progression and an enjoyable role – these employers are the only companies that make it into the Top Companies For Graduates To Work For. TheJobCrowd is the ‘Tripadvisor’ of graduate jobs. Thousands of graduates at several hundred graduate employers write anonymous job reviews on TheJobCrowd.com every year. All of these reviews are displayed on www.TheJobCrowd.com, including crucial information such as the best & worst things about working for the company, the salary level and application & interview tips. In their reviews, graduate employees rate fourteen key aspects of their experience – such as Work/Life Balance, Career Progression and what the Training is like – so as to give a clear picture of exactly how happy they are to work for their employer. In this guide, we rank the companies in order of the overall ratings that they have been given in the last year by their graduate employees, so the rankings show you who the very best companies for graduates to work for are. And TheJobCrowd.com website will help you land a great graduate job at one of these (or many other) companies. Employers constantly tell us that they want applicants to show that they have extensively researched the company and that they really understand what the job that they are applying to involves. They frequently recommend TheJobCrowd as the perfect way to do this. So use this guide to choose some genuinely great companies to work for, read the reviews on TheJobCrowd.com to get a real understanding of exactly what it’s like to work there and then use the application and interview tips to land your dream job!

How The Rankings Work The Top Companies For Graduates To Work For Rankings, are purely based on the opinions of graduate employees. Several thousand graduate employees write anonymous job reviews on TheJobCrowd every year. As well as providing detailed answers to questions such as “What are the best and worst things about your company?”, each reviewer rates their satisfaction with fourteen key attributes of their employer.
The Key Attributes are: Benefits Career Progression Colleagues Company Culture Enjoyment of Their Role
Ethical & Environmental Awareness International Opportunities Location Management
Responsibility Salary Support Training Work/Life Balance
The results in the Top Companies For Graduates To Work For are based entirely on these ratings. Provided we receive a minimum number of reviews for a company (dependent on company size), a company is eligible for the rankings. We take an average of the marks provided in each review and then average that score across all the reviews submitted for each company. The average rating determines whether they made it into the rankings and if so, in what position.
The Rankings 2x Top 100s Company Listings There are two Top 100 Companies For Graduates To Work For lists – one for companies who hire less than 30 graduates per year, and one for those who hire 30 or more. The survey approach can favour companies with smaller intakes (and thus fewer reviewers), so we split the companies into two lists to ensure it is as fair as possible. Every one of the 200 companies in the rankings has an entry on pages 12 to 30. Those with adverts have their extra pages listed.
Sector Infographics There are 18 industry sections in the guide. Each section lists the companies from that industry who have made it into this year’s rankings, as well as providing some key data and information about the industry.

What To Look For In A Graduate Scheme
by
David Adkins, Joined National Grid in 2011
We asked David Adkins, a high-flying recent graduate at National Grid who presented to 350 graduate-employer attendees at The Top Companies Awards in June, what advice he would give to a new graduate trying to choose the right scheme – now that he has the benefit of having been through it all: Choices, choices, choices – we have so many to make during life and choosing your graduate employer is a really important decision to make. I felt overwhelmed by all the information out there: company websites, rankings and careers advice at university, it confused instead of simplifying my decision. I really wish TheJobCrowd had been around to simplify things for me: reviews are now vitally important in all walks of life, I wouldn’t even choose something simple like a hotel without looking at it’s online reviews, so why should I choose an employer without hearing about it from those who have experienced it? Having submitted reviews to TheJobCrowd myself about National Grid during my time on the scheme I can tell you it is a robust assessment.

The Top Companies We all have very different ideas about our future careers, where we want to end up, how we want to get there, what we look for in a company etc., but now I am here working for one (I am post Grad scheme now) I have a few pearls of wisdom for you to take on board, or feel free to ignore! Development really is the most important aspect of a career. To be honest I didn’t understand what that word meant when I was at Uni, but now I know it enables everything: increased competence, opportunities and progression to name but a few. A well structured graduate programme will support you here. Take time to question and really delve into how an employer will support your development during the graduate programme and after scheme – you don’t want to have an amazing experience on the scheme and then be dropped into a company with no structure in place! So head down to careers fairs to talk to companies and try to find current or ex-graduates at the stands who will tell you like it really is. Internships or work experience are the best ways of finding out about a company from the inside. If you still have time, apply for experience/ internships in companies you’re interested in and hopefully find your dream company. Even if the experience is negative, you will have whittled down your choices! Tailor your applications – As part of generation Y, we have wide ranging skills sets, higher levels of education and high expectations of the world, we are in a privileged position, the only trouble is all the other grads applying are part of the same cohort – differentiation is more important than it has ever been. The number one tip from those in my grad year is to make sure each application is tailored to the specific company you apply for. This can be tricky when you have lots of applications and time is scarce in your final year, but it is worth finding a way to make sure each individual potential employer doesn’t get the impression you have copy/ pasted your answers. Don’t limit your options – find a few companies that you believe have what you want and apply to all of them. The process of getting a job is all part of your development, learning what employers are looking for in applications, sculpting them to make them personal. If you are lucky enough to get multiple interviews or assessments, use them to your advantage to learn more about the company and its culture – it may take the focus off them grilling you! Benefits, not just salary, are important – In Grad jobs it is vitally important to look at the overall benefits package the company offers alongside the salary. So many are focused on going for jobs with the highest headline salary figure; clearly this is important but ask about things such as share options, holiday days, accommodation support and training on offer (think development!), these are real differentiators and can easily make up for a headline salary gap. Also know what you’re signing up for – think about what type of work/life balance you want – you may get paid more and progress faster working twelve hour days, but at what price? So well done to those who have found TheJobCrowd and may this help to inform your choices. I have never looked back in my career with National Grid and hope that by putting in the time to research now, you will be in the same place in five years. David Adkins Joined National Grid as a graduate in 2011 after graduating from University of Southampton.

COMPANY: DUNNHUMBY
AVERAGE RATING:
4.03/5 By far the most common and emphatic praise of dunnhumby is that there is a “lovely atmosphere and culture”. The Company Culture was rated at a staggering 4.65/5, with employees describing it as “sociable”, “friendly” and “fun”. Much of this stems from the company’s belief in “always keeping its employees happy”, with several company-wide social events and opportunities to mix with employees from various departments in a social setting, contributing to the high score of 4.63/5 for Work/Life Balance.

Benefits 4.08 This fantastic company culture is of course driven and influenced by the people who work at dunnhumby, who one reviewer described as “incredible”, before going on to claim that “it’s fun to come into work every day.” It is due to these “genuinely passionate and great people” that the company received a rating of 4.54/5 for Colleagues. Many graduates also point to the “many great opportunities to find exactly the role that suits you” and the GP&S graduate scheme, which consists of four six-month placements, “offering graduates the chance to fully understand the company and find where your strengths and weaknesses lie”. The flexible career path offered by dunnhumby is made all the more appealing when you take into account that “responsibility will be given to you very early on in your career”. This level of autonomy and the fact that “you are given a lot of freedom with your work” explains why the company scored 4.04/5 for Responsibility. Add to this “the real sense of support and teamwork” - which saw dunnhumby receive a score of 4.00/5 for Training and 4.04/5 for Support - and it is easy to see why the company is so highly valued by those who work there. www.dunnhumby.com/yourfuture

AVERAGE RATING:
4.12/5 There is a huge focus on training and personal development at Fidessa. “There are great training and development opportunities for graduates” explains one graduate, while another points to the “loads of amazing training courses” and yet another says that “training is given on everything you don’t know or understand”. In particular there is an emphasis on the specific needs of individual graduates, rather than a ‘one-sizefits-all’ approach. This leads to lots of descriptions from reviewers that the training is “very flexible” and “develops me as an individual” and ultimately results in an outstanding score of 4.31/5 for Training.

What’s more, reviewers say that their senior co-workers “care about you and they are always ready to help you. Everyone helps each other and shares their knowledge and experience”, leading to an even higher 4.35/5 average rating for Support. “It is a fantastic place to learn” sums up one reviewer. The “brilliant work/life balance” receives an even higher average rating – 4.46/5. Reviewers note that there is “not much of a high pressure/long hours culture” and the company emphasizes that they favour performance and results over hours spent working. Unsurprisingly, this also translates into a 4.35/5 score for the Company Culture, which is bolstered by the fact that it is a “really friendly company” with many company funded social events, networking opportunities and meet-ups. Graduates also praise the “extra perks - such as free breakfast, a free starbuck-style cafe, Friday treats, daily fresh fruit, and evening socials (free drinks!)”. Finally, reviewers describe their colleagues as “really, really friendly” and “good for a laugh”. Overall, Colleagues are rated an outstanding 4.58/5. www.fidessa.com

A score of 4.32/5 for Training reflects this, with one employee commenting: “it is not just about the business, it is also about making sure each employee is continually developed and challenged to meet their potential.” This perhaps helps to explain the scores of 4.20/5 for Support and 4.40/5 for Management, with one employee explaining that “my job is extremely challenging but also rewarding, with a great team of people to help support my development.” At P&G, there is a “great culture of information and knowledge sharing” and “everyone is willing to go that extra step to reach the optimum result” and the company rightly scored 4.18/5 for Company Culture. Add to this a score of 4.16/5 for Enjoyment and 4.35/5 for Work/Life Balance and it is easy to see why so many employees love working at P&G. Matt Hateley I started with National Grid in 2009 and spent 18 months on the Graduate Development Programme – I’ve had lots of great training and lots of development opportunities. I’ve travelled all over the country on different courses, meeting new people and networking. I then spent a year in my first post and after two and a half years I was in a management position.
“My quick transition from graduate to managing other people and leading a team shows how much commitment National Grid has to developing its people”
Matt Hateley, Investment Planning and Performance Manager
My quick transition from graduate to managing other people and leading a team shows how much commitment National Grid has to developing its people. Every day is different and it’s always incredibly busy, but fun. I think that’s one of the key messages – it’s hard work but it’s a great place to be. The atmosphere is really good, the people are nice, and the job’s fun, interesting and challenging. National Grid’s got a really great culture. You can go up to anyone and ask them anything and they’ll help. A lot of people join as an apprentice and retire in the same company; that’s a testament to the culture of the business. It’s a really exciting place to be at the moment. National Grid is effectively rewiring the whole of the UK. To be a part of that lasting legacy is great. As an engineer, you want to leave something behind that’s better than when you started. That’s the fun bit – going home feeling that you’ve made a difference.
Vicky Young This year has given me the chance to see that National Grid is the right company for me, and that I’m the right person for it too. You never know what to expect coming into a work placement – whether you’ll be treated as a student or given real-life work to do – and I couldn’t believe how much I was treated as a permanent employee!
“I want to be developed so one day I can manage a team of my own – I know I can do that here.”
Vicky Young, IS Industrial Placement Student)
Vicky Young, IS Industrial Placement Student
I’m quite career-focused and strong minded, and to know that National Grid is going to put a lot into developing me to become stronger as a person and as a manager really appeals to me. I also appreciate the flexibility and the people I work with – everybody’s so engaging. I’ve felt part of the team and based on my placement year here, I know I’ll have a really good career with National Grid. This placement year has allowed me to look at roles and consider what I do like to do. I want to go into some kind of management role. Whether that’s project management or people management I’m not entirely sure. But that’s the beauty of the graduate programme – it will allow me to explore that in greater depth.

Graduates start with an intensive training scheme and they praise the high levels of support provided throughout their rotations – particularly the “mentor scheme which supports new graduates through their learning.” The company also supports its graduates to professional registration and overall, reviewers provided an impressive 4.20/5 average rating for Support. Graduates also say that “staff are all friendly and willing to help new people settle in and introduce you to new people”, which helps to explain the outstanding 4.55/5 rating for Colleagues. These opportunities extend far beyond the UK’s borders. International Opportunities 4.21 As one of the world leaders in speciality chemicals, with employees in 34 countries, there is “the opportunity to work in different locations across Europe and to be involved in various projects”, making it no wonder that Croda scored 4.21/5 for International Opportunities. The vast majority of employee reviews also point to the “friendly people” and the level of support available. With a score of 4.34/5 for Colleagues, it is clear to see that Croda is a company that takes pride in its people. “Everyone welcomes new members to the company and their team and there are opportunities to speak to managers from across the country,” writes one reviewer. Indeed, it is this level of approachability which sees so many positive reviews about the company structure. Employees claim that “all senior staff are hugely approachable” and “you can speak to people at any level without worry or hesitation” and time and time again we see comments about team leaders who “always make time for employees and support us in everything we do”. This is also reflected in the rating of 4.12/5 for Support, with the mentor and buddy system receiving plenty of praise. Finally, Croda’s “very well-structured training programme” gives graduates plenty of responsibility whilst also offering them all the help they require. www.croda.com/graduates

COMPANY: FIRSTGROUP
AVERAGE RATING:
3.88/5 The graduate scheme at FirstGroup “is very enjoyable”, say the Transport company’s graduate reviewers and it seems that there are two primary reasons for this – responsibility and flexibility. First the responsibility: “the company gives you the responsibility to manage projects on your own”, explains one graduate, as well as “to take on your own projects that have a tangible impact on the business”. “I have been given a significant amount of responsibility in a very short period of time” explains another. Overall, the company was given an average rating of 3.89/5 for Responsibility – a very high score for this area.

The flexibility comes through the fact that the scheme “allows you to have a wide variety of placements”, and that “the job role is very flexible and broad in scope, thus you will be performing a variety of different tasks instead of just focusing on performing a single role”. The result, say the graduates is that “no two days are the same and you get to see how every area of the business operates. It’s almost like starting a new job on a daily basis”. The company lets graduates tailor the two year scheme themselves “to give the best chance of employment in the selected interest”. In addition, many reviews highlight the quality of the training and the amount of support available for graduates. As one reviewer explains: “the company pushes you to do various training courses to develop you and your skill set, which is extremely rewarding”, perhaps explaining FirstGroup’s rating of 3.93/5 for Training. Meanwhile, Support is scored an even higher 4.29/5. As one reviewer summarises, FirstGroup “is really keen to invest in the development of its graduates and contributes a considerable amount of resources, both financial and management time, into the graduate development process”. www.firstgroupgraduaterecruitment.com
