EDITORIAL To all my Fellow Snowboarders Once the philosopher Seneca said: “The trips and the place changes renew the mind vigor”, and despite that it was said over 2.000 years ago, is more than clear that this Roman thinker knew more than good how edifying is the curiosity. When we go on a trip, we open our mind, we learn how to be more tolerant and we discover new ways of seen the world. Gloomy and grey are those who don’t propose themselves knowing the world they are surrounded by… I think everyone agree when I said: “Every snowboarder are travelers for nature” Because there are a few who had the privilege to live near to a snow mountain. Y that why, the simple fact of having to travel long distances to make what make us happy is what gives us a wide vision of how distinct our cities are, or what defect they had or what kind of people live there. What is a Snowboarder? You will know when I tell that we are synonyms of open mind, ready to know new people and their culture, of a journey and bold spirit. The hurry of find fresh snow is like the daily breath, that’s what all kind Snowboarders had in common. So what I want you to, despite the challenges and setbacks, never lose the adventurous spirit and the energy that gives living the life to the fullest.

»”Hello, how are you? Where have you been this summer? Are you already recovered from your shoulder injury? Yes, I’m in great shape! I had to finish the park Mack Dawg film (Double Decade) after getting hurt, so I had to “get high”! Summer has gone well: A little MTt Snowboarding. Hood, Skate and Surf in California. »We talked about your trip to Japan last winter. I understand that it was epic... That trip was a lot of fun! I went with my friend Pat Moore, Shaun White and Zack Leach. It was a Red Bull journey, there was snow and many friends, what else could you ask for?

»What do you like the most about Japan? Do you have a girlfriend there? No, I don’t have a girlfriend! Hehe. I feel really lucky to have the opportunity to go to Japan really often. Everything in that country is different: the food, the mountains and the snow. I like everything from there! And the people are very nice too! » Your way of practicing snowboarding has evolved and has passed the stage of the championships... What is the next step in your snowboard evolution? I think I will continue making videos and photo shoots because that’s what amuses me the most right now, I don’t really know what will be the next step I´ll take, but we’ll see…

»Will there be a Second part of Sorsa Project? What did that movie mean to you? I don’t know it yet. It would be silly to do a sequel right now, maybe in a few years, but it’s hard to say now. I wish I could do something; it was a hard but fun work!

“IN SNOWBOARDING THERE ARE NO LIMITS, YOU CAN ALWAYS LEARN AS MUCH AS YOU WANT”

»What is your role into Analog? Are you free to bring something to the design of new products?

»What’s the Trulli Clan? Tell us…

In the Analog Snowboard team there are only four Riders. I really like being part of the team! We are always talking to the owners and having meetings regarding the products. I like to help the team to develop new products and that our ideas go into the market.

It’s our Finnish Snowboard team! Lauri Heiskari and Likka Bäckström started it and now we are eight riders in the team .We are all good friends! We all come from the same part of Finland, and I really like to go surfing and have parties with them! The other members are: Ali Toppinen, Eero Niemelä, Jussi Trvainen, Harri Holmsten and Jari Tuoriniemi.

»Was your Best time: 360 No foot during the 2007 Air & Style or when you beat the world record in the Oakley Arctic Challenge?

»They say everything eventually becomes in fashions. Will we see you wearing that colored Mohawk?

Certainly, the best moment was when I beat the world record. I was young and I let myself go without really knowing what was happening ... I was just trying to jump higher than Shaun White, hahaha. It gave me an extraordinary feeling after I did it in front of my fans.

Ha-ha. I don’t know... That was kind of a bet with my friends, just for fun. Maybe I will wear it the next year. You never know.

IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, WE WONDER WHAT IS GOING ON WITH SNOWBOARDING AND WHERE IT IS GOING. WELL, THESE ARE THE RIDERS THAT GIVE US THE ANSWER.

o make a ranking has an obvious problem; we are always going to miss somebody. To Select a few riders is kind of personal choice and it is almost impossible agree with everybody. We are sure, just seeing the title make you think in some nominees, who could be or could not be on the list. These are a couple of the most important riders of a short period of snowboard, that probably is the most changing. Season by season they are trying to demonstrate that snowboarding is a constantly evolving sport. But not all of them are here for the same reason; some of them have “this particular style that everybody

can recognize on the videos, while some of them represent an attitude on board. In the beginning of their career, all of these riders had their own idols. They had somebody to be inspired by. The most of them discover the Corks seen to Peter Line in each flight, and they know what some crazy guys in Alaska were capable to do, like Johan Olofsson. They were witnesses of how Travis Parker was becoming on synonym of fun and originality on the board, or how Ingemar Backman beat the height record in Riksgransen in 1996. Therefore delay, these are the riders:

EERO ETTALA Eero Ettala represents the riders generations that renew snowboarding. This change came when the new idols were kids that grow up with the snowboard, riders that ends their High School before taking the snowboard as a real job. But apart of his perfect technique that takes him years, Eero reach skills that make him do everything easier than it looks.

ROMAIN DE MA

RCHI

For some of you he is the craziest rider in the world. These are the terms to describe someone that put the same energy in a Backcountry jump and in a party that kicks ass. Romain in a several years took the first place, he was an example that you can always flight more and more. But the most amazing thing that Romain did was the flight of 36 meters over a natural with Travis Rice. Just one picture took him to the cover page of 7 international magazines.

18 BACK TO THE FUTURE

SEN

TERJE HAAKON

One list would not be complete without Terje on it. Perhaps in the last couple of years has not be the most active on the board, but he already won everything in the 90’s, and when he is in competitions it is for doing something big. In the 2007, he beat the height record that belong to Heikki Sorsa since 2001. That Backside Air 360 of 9.8 meters is still the top one these days. But the best contribution he made for snowboarding was clear talking to the riders. Since 1998 he has been fighting with federations and Snowboard organizations .He is behind of Ticket To Ride (World Snowboard Tour), the most important circuit of competitions, and he is the most respectful voice in the negotiations with the International Federation of Snowboard about the Slopesltyle’s future at Olympics.

A LOT OF THESE RIDERS COME FROM A MINORITY SPORT AND IT HAS BEEN WITH THEM UNTIL WHAT THEY BECOME TODAY.

MARK FRANK M

ONTOYA

He’s the Snowboard highest exponent of XXXXL Size. He is the original gangster on the snow, the American Ghetto Attitude’s ambassador. His step on the Snowboard is mark by the style that hemade himself, one style that move in te rhythm of the hip hop and it is full of Nollies and Rails. Today he is producing lot videos that a real snowboard fan must see.

19 1st Edition [May]

DAVID BENEDEK He must be snowboarding 24/7; it is the only way that he can make all of those contributions to snowboarding. As riders, we are in his debt for all the tricks he has made, like the 990 Shifty-spins or the Double Cork 1260, and it is because of them he won a lot of competitions. But on the top of all, is that he brought the science to Snowboard and worried for create safer jumps for the riders.

JP WALKER When Peter Line called him up for being a part of the “8 De For um”, he saw a spark in him. JP Walker appear with the best Crew that has seen snowboard, in company with Devun Walsh, Bjorn Leines, Joni Malmi, Chris Dufficy…Since his first appearance, Walker and his characteristic up arms has becoming synonym of rails. The best way to define him is when Mack Dawg did it: If something defines him it is his style. He do everything his own way and he can be known from the distance.”

20 BACK TO THE FUTURE

GIGI RUFF Behind that kid’s face is one of the best riders in the Backcountry of all times. His place is between mountains, where during the years he has become in one of the riders that can make freestyle ride without any jumps. Somehow, he knows where is the place for a special trick is or do something that everyone wants to do in a Snow park.

IN THE BEGINNING OF THEIR CAREER, ALL OF THESE RIDERS HAD THEIR OWN IDOLS; THEY HAD SOMEBODY TO BE INPIRED BY.

SHAUN WHITE It is not even necessary to be a snowboard fan to know Shaun White, better known as “the flying tomato”. He is the mediatic rider for his excellence, the perfect figure for any brand team. His place is not in the videos, he is a natural born rival, always focus in victory with a ace under his sleeve. He is probably the best at the Half pipe, and always a firm candidate for the victory in the Slopestyle. Over the years has been everyone against white.

WHAT’S UP MARIE? I

i erv Int : ew ilch lW ni e Da es o Ph : tos le Co Bar ash

MARIE HAS BEEN NOMINATED TO BEST RIDER OF THE YEAR TOO MANY TIMES, PRIZE FIVE BY TRANSWORLD MEDIA AND ALSO SHE WAS NOMINATED TO SEVERAL PRIZE BY HER PARTICIPATION ON MOVIES OF ROME AND ABSINTHE.

23 1st Edition [May]

Now that you’re in the professional team Thirty Two, do you feel that you have reached the top of your career? No, I am still a beginner. I have many things to learn! Which snowboarders do think are the best ones now? Female snowboarders, I would mention Leanne Pelosi who has been sensational in every competence in the last couple of years. But I also think that Tara Dakides, Hana Beamen and Natasha Zurek have also done an incredible job. Which Snowboarders inspire you? There’s a lot. Some have better style than others. Some are more constant and innovative when it comes to tricks, and obviously, some has a better technique. I really like to see riders with personality as Laura Hadar. Certainly, I can say that this woman is wonderful. There is also a man, Andrew Hardingham, who’s not the best, but is a rider that makes extreme things, he overcomes anything. Also, he makes homemade videos that are really fun to see. Who influenced you to get to this point of your career? Tara Dakides, Barrett Christy, Nicola Thost, JP Walker. Tricks are not the ones that have influenced me, but I feel so good when I watched theirs tricks in video.

What’s new in the contests you’re participating? Look, there’s what happens with women riders and contests...It’s rare that a women do spectacular tricks, as men do, but competitions are a good place to be an exhibitionist. Men can’t be conservative in terms of tricks, many of the men land their entire super tricks; women are not at that level yet. Sometimes a Straight Air and a 360 are enough to win a contest for women. What‘s the best of Snowboard? It’s the Free-riding and recordings. You can spend an entire winter recording and learning new tricks and how to landing them, the interesting thing are that those days are always the best. In the contests, you can do simple tricks and landing them, and with that you could win. But I don’t like to win with a BACKSIDE THREE because it always feels bad. I prefer to try more difficult tricks before winning with a BACKSIDE THREE or a STRAIGHT AIR. ¿What would make evolve the Snowboard and the riders? I wish that the judges pay more attention in the exhibitions, it’s obvious when someone makes an unusual trick and doesn’t win.

MARIE FRANCE STARTED SNOWBOARDING IN 2001. SINCE THEN, SHE IS KNOWN AS ONE OF THE MOST VERSATILE SNOWBOARDERS IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY, BECAUSE SHE HAS TALENT IN TWO STYLES; URBAN AND BACKCOUNTRY.

24 DOWN TO THE LEFT

“I DON’T LIKE TO WIN WITH A BACKSIDE THREE BECAUSE IT ALWAYS MAKES ME FEEL BAD. I PREFER TO TRY MORE DIFFICULT TRICKS BEFORE WINNING WITH A BACKSIDE THREE OR A STRAIGHT AIR.”

You think: “are the judges even watching?” But sometimes you win and you felt that you don’t deserve it; we all know who should win. What contest did you find out this year? Vail Sessions, Vans Cupe, Abominable Snowboard, G.V.R. It went kind of bad Could you name a moment your were really scared? Yes, I got a lot of them. For instead, some of them are when you’re in the air and you know you’re falling. And you:’ is this the end of the season or my career?” It happened in the Super park last year, when I was doing one-fotter and I land on my neck and I rolled about half mountain on my neck, but don’t worry, I’m fine ! Where are you livinng now? Now, I’m living in Whistler Blackcomb. Where did you grow up? Actually, I grew up in a very small town, it’s an hour from Quebec. it is incredibly beautiful. It has a park in the local mountain, the Massif; I did long free-riding there. I would ride with my brothers for the trees, we are very competitive. What is the best part of Snowboarding? The best part is riding with your friends and have fun. It’s fun to go to competitions, but it’s better trying new tricks with your friends in the summer.

25 1st Edition [May]

Are you working on new tricks? I want to learn all Four Sevens. I can’t even do the Backside or the Cab Seven. Also I want to land my Front-side 1080. last year Red Bull gave me the opportunity to record my land 1080, it was only for my. The recording last a week, but I couldn’t land it. I felt very bad because the recording was for me and I couldn’t do it. I want to achieve this trick at any cost. Also I’m working on the Backside 360, it’s so difficult. How long have you started to practice Snowboard? If I remember correctly, I have been practicing snowboard twelve years ago. Why did you start practicing Snowboard? I started because of my brothers. Once my dad bought some tickets to enter to a park and my brothers went snowboarding and I went skiing with my dad. A day later, I said:” it was so boring and my brothers having fun with snowboarding! “.” I knew that I had to do it. Then the next day, I went with my brothers snowboarding, and I thought, they are going to be mean to me, but no, they were very awesome with me, they helped me a lot. What films have you been working on recently? This year, I participated on a film made by Rome, they were really nice to me because they wanted a full part about me. I loved it! I also recorded with Runway, which had good and bad things, but I still enjoyed it very much. Tell me What’s your best achievement? Being part of Any Means. I couldn’t be better, well I could, but it was real fun. It’s not always easy to record with guys and I didn’t want to be in Alaska with Jeremy Jones.

“IT’S BEEN ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO ME BE MYSELF, NOT WHAT THE INDUSTRY WANTS ME TO BE”

26 DOWN TO THE LEFT

Speaking about music, What is your favorite band? It’s just that the guys pushed me a lot, women aren’t very experienced and we think much about some things. But they also fall and learn. Besides, I left the guys speechless when I land something, but the women are so much more competitive with each other and I just want to deal with it in the competitions, especially when you do it just for feeling good with yourself.

That’s a tuff one. I can’t tell you, I change my likes all the time, but if I had to choose one, it would be Patsy Kline. Some artists that I listen now are Regina Spektor, Rage against the Machine, Antiflag, The stuff. In the school, I heard Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, and some Techno. Do You Have a hobby besides the Snowboard? I like to be with animals

Do you have any work trips planned for this year?

Are you going to Quebec this year?

There’s one and it’s probably to Russia. Red Bull and Oakley select me to the journey CAR-BOARDING and HELI-BOARDING in which I could be. Of these kind of trips, you’re always the last on find out. But, I’m sure that there will be another trips.

I went there a few times in this year to see my friends and my family. Once I went and I pass all day taking care of my nephew, he was 10 months, it was amazing. Everyone in my family are quite independent and we don’t give us much news about each other, but the truth is that, we love ourselves a lot. And obviously, we enjoyed the time and the things that we do together.

If you wouldn’t be a professional Snowboarder, what would you be? I would be a Hippie, and I would have many Sea Horses, those are my favorite animals.

“I HOPE I HAD A GOOD FUTURE IN FRONT OF ME, BUT I WOULD NEVER FORGET WHO I WAS BEFORE MY PROFESSIONAL SNOWBOARDING CAREER STARTED”
