COVER - Expedition’s heading towards clear water with their new video, Gone Fishin’. Frankie Heck’s part will be one everyone will want to catch.

HOMEBASE Bethlehem, PA

Photography By Mike Panic, Matt Pepe and John Shanahan

Bethlehem PA’s Homebase was started in 2002 by Andy Po. At the time there were no shops in the area that were interested in having a team or sponsoring events. Homebase filled this void and has been doing grass roots skate jams, hosting visiting teams, and were instrumental in opening the Bethlehem Skate Plaza – the area’s first concrete park. Their dedication to building the skateboarding scene in their area for over a decade is admirable to say the very least.

NOTE

Manchester, England Photography By Jim Craven and Jacob Johnson

The Reverend Jesse Jackson once said that “London is the capital of the UK, but Manchester is its Soul.” The historical city birthed the industrial revolution, two world class football teams, and also has a long standing highly influential music scene. Note is very proud of its city’s history and is honored to be the skateboard shop that serves the community. They just celebrated fifteen years in business and opened a second shop in the Manchester City Centre – their commitment to skateboarding is obvious and you can rest assured that Note will continue to build on its legacy for years to come.

Hanging in front of Note never gets old, you’ll find Tyrone O’Hanrahan there on any given day.

PRECISION Lincoln, NE

Photography By Brett Brooner

To say that Lincoln Nebraska’s Precision has deep roots in skateboarding would be an understatement that doesn’t do their legacy justice. The shop was originally founded by Scott Bouwens in 1984, but really cemented itself in 1986 when he partnered with Phil Burcher and Rich Flowerday and they moved into their first real store front. Precision has been the driving force behind the building of the scene in Nebraska through throwing contests and events and hosting numerous demos over their thirty year history. They’ve seen many eras come and go and have remained true to the sport and culture on a whole throughout it all. Their dedication to skateboarding in Nebraska is unparalleled.

POP APPAREL & THE PARK Spain

Photography By Antonio G. Hijano and Esteban Velarde

Pop Apparel was established in 2010 on the coast of Spain where skateboarding isn’t as popular as it is in other countries. They are working on building a solid local scene through cultivating a family environment through their shop. POP prides itself on supporting its skate family through highs and lows and have adopted the “keep on pushing” slogan to represent that. The Park opened in 2009 in Spain as a small but passionate epicenter of skateboarding for their local scene. Due to a very committed community of skaters, the shop grew quickly as they brought a fresh vibe to their area and were dedicated to supporting the next generation. The Park focuses on carrying top quality brands that have a personality to them that skaters can identify with.

MARCOS RUSSELL-GREER Granting Wishes By Leland Ware

Marcos Russell-Greer is a fourteen year old skater from Berkeley, CA that was born with Cystic Fibrosis. If you’re not familiar with the disease, it’s a genetic disorder that primarily affects the lungs, but also impacts other vital organs. As a result of his condition, Marcos has to do breathing treatments twice a day in order to stay healthy and avoid infections that could result in a trip to the hospital. This does not stop Marcos from skating as hard as he possibly can and pushing himself to progress on his board. Given his passion for skateboarding and DGK, when given the opportunity to get anything he wanted through the Make-A-Wish® program; Marcos made an obvious choice—on Thursday September 25th Boo Johnson, Lenny Rivas, and Dane Vaughn showed up at Berkeley High to surprise Marcos with his own custom DGK board and a box of gear. After that, everyone headed out to San Francisco’s new SOMA skatepark where Marcos was treated to a session with the team. Time flies when you’re having fun, and after a few hours it was time for the DGK squad to head out; but not before extending Marcos an invitation to get in touch if he’s ever down in LA so that he can come and hang out at The Kayo Store and go skate with everyone again.

After the amazing response to the Blood Money video, it was only right to follow up with a tour; so we packed up Marquise Henry, Boo Johnson, Dane Vaughn, Lenny Rivas, and Darius “Woogie Jackson in the Kayo van and sent them on a nine city tour over the course of fourteen days. Everyone had an amazing time traveling and skateboarding together and it was definitely a bonding experience. DGK team Manager Brad Rosado gave us the highlights of what was certainly an epic journey.

24

THEKAYOCORP.COM

TOUR MVP... Dane was definitely the MVP on this tour. During the demos it was like he needed his own filmer besides myself, hah. He would just go in circles and kill shit. That same energy was used in the streets at every spot we hit up. This dude stayed turnt up the entire time.

GETTING MONEY… While arriving in Vegas at 3:00 AM right after doing a demo in Salt Lake, we found out that we had only one hotel room for the whole crew. Some dudes went to sleep and the rest of us kept it going in the Vegas streets. It was Boo’s first time gambling and he came up $200, Quise backed him up and won $300. While the sun was coming up Eli hit us up and told us to come through the DGK suite. We kicked it there ‘til 10:00 AM and went back to the hotel to finally get our rooms. It was a long successful day to say the least.

NEW BLOOD… Woogie automatically fit in with the crew. Usually if you’re the new blood you would get schooled or punked. In Woogie’s case he earned respect right off the bat. You can call him the silent killer. Pretty much all he said during the entire tour was “Nah I’m Good” or “DGK ALL DAY”. Other than that he killed every demo and spot we hit – A true Dirty Ghetto Kid.

28

THEKAYOCORP.COM

BEST STOP… The best stop on the tour was definitely Boise, Idaho. When we first arrived it seemed like a ghost town. We even went out looking for spots and didn’t have any luck at all. The next day at the signing there was a big skate scene at the shop all of a sudden. That definitely got us super hyped and they even had a mini table they brought to the demo. The crew ended up skating the table the entire time and put a proper street demo on for the locals. Don’t under estimate the underdogs.

FRANKIE HECK Texas Fold’em Interview By Rob Welsh

Frankie Heck is the latest addition to the Expedition team. Rob Welsh wanted the world to get a little more personal info on our new recruit, so he got Frankie on the phone to get the low down on who this guy is and a little piece of what he’s all about. Flip in, shuv out moves that would even make Ryan Gallant do a double take. Kickflip front nose 270 shuv out.

Start by introducing yourself to everyone reading this.

What’s the story with your dad taking you on skate missions?

My name’s Frankie Heck, I’m 21 years old, I’m from Hurst Texas.

Yeah, I couldn’t have really done anything without my dad taking me around. He used to film me with a little dad cam back in the day. Even to this day, I’m still down for him to come out on sessions. He loves it. He’ll go and bondo spots and run away from the cops and stuff, it’s pretty sick.

Where in the hell is Hurst Texas? It’s over by Fort Worth.

Oh, you’re from the Dallas area. Had you ever heard of Richard Angelides?

I heard that your dad brings a generator. Yeah, he has a generator and lights.

Yeah, he’s from the Garland area. A bunch of the homies skated Dallas with him back in the day.

That’s amazing!

Was Richard your favorite pro skateboarder growing up?

He’s down for it dude, he loves going out and doing all that stuff.

One of them, that dude’s sick!

Are you still living in Texas? I’m living in California now, I’ve been living in Long Beach for six months.

Do you like it? I love it. The weather and everything, the scenery is insane – there’s never a bad day.

32

THEKAYOCORP.COM

Did your dad ever build you a jump ramp? Oh yeah, I had a pyramid and everything. I had two mini ramps, they were connected to my trampoline.

So your family is super supportive. Are they proud of you? Yeah, they’re so psyched – they’re super happy for me.

I heard your whole family posts comments on the Expedition Instagram? I see it sometimes, so yeah – they’re just super psyched, they’re down for it.

What’s your day-to-day like out here in Cali? Lately it’s been going out and filming. Waking up around ten, Tim will hit me up and we’ll go skate with the Brunners and all of those dudes. Then we’ll come back at night and I’ll just kick it with the homies from Texas that I live with. I pretty much keep that routine every day, then once in awhile I’ll have a chill day and just go to Cherry Park right up the street.

Give us a list of all of your sponsors. I skate for Expedition, Supra, Altamont, Thunder, Spitfire, Index Skate Shop, and Filmbot Griptape.

Top 5 Texas skaters. Ghuru Khalsa, Jeremy Holmes, Richard Angelides, Jon Comer, and David Langston – he’s not pro, but he’s from Houston and he rips.

How dare you forget Jeff Phillips and John “Tex” Gibson! Speaking of Tex, do you have any nicknames? Frank the tank, I get that a lot – it’s pretty terrible.

So you’re living in a full-blown skate house right now?

What do you do for fun other than skateboard?

Yeah, with five dudes. There’s two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a living room. I live in the living room with curtains.

Go to the bars with the homies, I don’t even know dude – I just skate a lot.

I got some advice, don’t ever move out of the skate house.

Did you graduate High School?

Don’t ever move out of the skate house?

Yes I did, 2011 son.

Nope, look at what happens to everyone that does – it’s a slippery slippery slope.

Good for you. Frankie, good things are going to happen for you – the planets are aligning.

That’s true.

Thank you so much, I appreciate it!

ERIC BAILEY Heart Of The City By Leland Ware

Eric Bailey has been a staple artist behind many amazing DGK graphics and series for years. He grew up hanging out in the skate and graffiti scene in San Francisco, which has heavily influenced his art. After attending the SF Art Institute, Bailey began a career as not only a graphic designer, but also a fine artist. Today, he’s known equally for his work on the computer and his unique oil paintings. We recently sat down with Eric to talk about what influences his work for DGK, it’s a fun and creative process to say the least. Creating A Series… “One thing that’s cool about DGK is that we always kind of pull from stuff. We use classic things from growing up, nostalgic things – we’re not really afraid to reference stuff from the past. A lot of the time it will start with something like that – a point of reference. We play off of children stories or older graphics, we like paying homage to things; which for me as a designer is a lot of fun because I get to put my spin on things that I grew up seeing.”

Favorite Graphics… “The Ghett-O-Rama was fun, I like the boards that have more layers to them, so that was cool cause you could put the stickers on it. The wood grain car series was dope, cause it was candy and wood which played off candy cars with wood grain steering wheels. I liked doing the skateboard with my dog on it a lot, that one was awesome.”

The Dog Cruiser… “We wanted to do some sort of cruiser board, and wanted it to be something creative. I saw my dog laying on the ground, and he kind of always lays like that – just flat, kind of frog style. I thought it would be

36

THEKAYOCORP.COM

rad to do that, a top and bottom pit bull cruiser cause he actually pulls me around on a skateboard too; so it kind of goes hand-in-hand.”

The FTPD Series… “Nick hit me up about doing some graphics with cops as pigs. With that series I was paying homage to Crum, that old cartoonist from Fritz The Cat. We kind of played off of that whole feel. Fritz The Cat is perfect for DGK, just that whole mentality and cartoon style. It just worked pulling the look from there and the cops from that movie.”

DGK Over Everything… “Growing up spending a lot of time in San Francisco, DGK is the perfect company to apply that influence. Skateboarding, hip hop, and the urban lifestyle goes hand-in-hand with DGK. Working with DGK is fun. I have a blast doing projects for them. I can kind of go back to just drawing cartoons and stuff – it’s like being a kid again, I don’t have to take it too serious. The company is dedicated to dirty ghetto kids, which is really free spirited. When I’m drawing a series for them, it’s like I’m just cruising. It’s super fun and low pressure.”

From drawings, to Canvas, to computer, Bailey has been behind some of your favorite DGK art.

REAL RECOGNIZE REAL DGK X Deadline By Leland Ware

Deadline’s creative director Angel NA is originally from Brooklyn and grew up skating around New York with East Coast legends including Ryan Hickey, Steven Cales, Justin Pierce, and Harold Hunter to name a few. When his best friends Joey Alvarez and Maurice Key took a bus to California, NA decided to stay put in NY and ended up putting his skateboard down and picking up a pager. By the time Joey and Mo returned to the Big Apple a year later, NA was a full-blown hustler making money in the streets. They convinced him to start skating again right around the time Supreme first opened in New York in 1994. NA got back on his board and ended up becoming an employee at the now legendary shop not long after. Working at Supreme had many perks, one of which was the casting agency next door who’s employees would often come down and invite the kids hanging out in front to come up and audition. NA got cast in everything from Calvin Klein and Stussy print advertisements to music videos and met many influential directors and photographers. In 2007, he found himself in LA working at Supreme on Fairfax. NA’s now partner Junebug

would come in and shop at the store and eventually asked NA if he ever thought about starting his own brand. The two had a meeting and a few months later Deadline was born. Now back in New York, NA serves as the face of the brand and takes the lead on graphic direction and the branding of the company, while Junebug handles the finances and runs things from behind the scenes. The DGK X Deadline collaboration came about through NA’s close ties with Stevie Williams, who he grew up skating with in New York and Philadelphia, and DGK brand manager Nick Lockman who he met during the filming of the movie Kids. The theme of the collab is “real recognize real” which NA explains as follows “We’re not out to just use people, we only mess with people that we’re homies with. We’re not just trying to do something with somebody cause they’re poppin’ at the moment. That’s where the real recognize real comes from.” With tastemakers like Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Kendrick Lamar, and the A$AP Mob wearing their clothes, Deadline is about as real as it gets.

PLA SKATE SHOP Folsom, CA By Leland Ware

PLA in Folsom California was started out of the necessity for a real skate shop in the area. When asked what makes their shop unique Ben from PLA simply stated, “We care about the culture, not the cash.” Being that Miles Silvas rides for them, Organika was excited about the opportunity to team up with PLA on a Farm League collaboration. “Miles started skating with all the homies a few years back. It’s been rad to watch him grow up and see the opportunities that skateboarding has opened up for him. He’s always been a super humble dude and doesn’t take anything for granted which is why I think skateboarding has taken him so far.” When asked about the significance of the collaboration board’s graphic, Ben commented “The graphic was easy. I just mentioned it to the PLAboys and after a few beers, they had it all laid out.” The team effort on these sort of details speaks volumes about the tight-knit family vibe of PLA’s crew – you’ll definitely want to swing by and check them out when you’re in the Folsom area.

INDEX SKATE SHOP Dallas, TX By Leland Ware

What makes a truly great skate shop? Is it the product on the shelves? Is it who hangs out there? Is it how in the know they are about what’s going on currently in skateboarding? Sure, all of these things factor in – but what makes a truly great skate shop is the sense of community it fosters in the people that call that shop home. Index in Dallas and Hurst Texas is definitely a truly great shop, which is why they were selected for Expedition’s latest Farm League collaboration. Reading what their extended family have to say about them is a true testament to the institution that Index has built in the Lone Star State. ”Index is literally one huge family. It’s pretty rad to know that skateboarding has built and bonded so many friendships over the years. From the OG’s to the first timers, we’re all here to keep the Dallas / Fort Worth scene alive!” - John Huynh “For many of us, index is an opportunity to help our skateboard community grow. Index has helped connect so many awesome skateboarders amongst incredible skills and personalities. The shop and the family have a passion for skateboarding that helps spread the love of the thing we enjoy the most.” - Victor Villafane “Index has always been a big inspiration to my generation and a creative plateau for the ever evolving, growing skate scene in DFW.” - Jordan McCollough

Vinny Ponte’s Top 5 Kayo Store Jams By Leland Ware

One of the advantages of having Vinny Ponte manage the Kayo Store on Fairfax is that he’s an accomplished DJ who’s played parties and worked with artists on mixtapes for over a decade. Anytime that you walk into the store, you can rest assured the music is going to be on point! We linked up with Vinny to get his top five albums that he likes to play at the store, you just might want to add these to your music collection if you don’t have them already.

01.

Nas Illmatic. That one’s obvious, I grew up on that and Nas is my favorite.

02.

All the Gang Starr albums. That basically helps the mood, it’s well rounded. That keeps everything perfect.

03.

On Sundays we do Reggae and Dub day, so we play King Tubby and Augustus Pablo. That’s to keep it mellow and keep everything nice and relaxed.

04.

Group Home. That’s a classic album that gets everybody hyped as soon as they hear it.

05.

The first Beatnuts album. That one is just straight up hype and gets you fuckin’ ready to make sales!

You can tell a lot by the crates, Vinny knows music.

Aramis had to hit this 5-0 just right to escape disaster. Luckily, he’s got it like that, and grinds right where he needs too.

“ARAMIS IS MY GOD BROTHER, THAT’S MY MOM’S GODSON. ONE DAY HIM AND HIS TWO BROTHERS WERE PLAYING IN MY MOM’S DRIVEWAY AND I HAD TWO SKATEBOARDS IN MY TRUNK. I TOLD THEM THAT THEY SHOULD START SKATING AND GAVE THEM ONE BOARD FOR THE THREE OF THEM TO LEARN ON. I CAME BACK A YEAR LATER AND THEY WERE SKATING IN MY MOM’S BACKYARD DOING KICKFLIPS AND HEELFLIPS. NOW YOU CAN SEE ARAMIS’ PROGRESSION, HE’S GONNA BE ONE OF THE BEST.” – Stevie Williams

Jermaine Wright

This edition of “Pound For Pound” focusses on one of our warehouse guys that also rips super hard on a skateboard. Jermaine Wright was born in Oceanside and started skating when he was 14 years old. He came up with the infamous NS Krue, which had a huge impact on his formative years. Jermaine picked up skating quick and was already grinding handrails after only being on a board for one year. When Nick Lockman and Stevie Williams opened up L&K Skateshop in Oceanside, Maine’s good friend BB Bastidas passed them his tape and Maine got sponsored by L&K and put on DGK’s flow team. Jermaine was eventually hired to work at Kayo through Nick where he remained for a year and a half before taking a hiatus to pursue skateboarding. When Maine’s mom left California for Oklahoma to buy a house, he decided to stay in San Diego to remain close to his roots. He went through some hard times before getting rehired at Kayo where he currently packs orders. When asked what his favorite things about working at Kayo are, Maine had this to say; “the perks of working here are my huge closet that’s filled with the best gear! Also the parties that we go to are pretty insane. It’s seriously a family here, you know everybody; you party with them. There’s so much good stuff about this place.” Jermaine’s job has not slowed down his skating at all, he’s currently filming for the Gold video and will have some sick tricks in that when it releases. 80
