LETTER TO ART LOVERS
Dear Fellow Arts Supporters, Since opening its doors in 1983, The Kentucky Center has continued in its mission to enrich the artistic, educational and economic vitality of the Commonwealth and region through world-class programming and cultural events. Much more than bricks and mortar, the Center is a change agent that supports important community priorities including access, diversity and inclusion, education, cultural tourism, talent attraction and economic development. During the 2015-2016 season alone, The Kentucky Center presented and played host to hundreds of performances and events as diverse as the region we serve. This season the Center’s strategic plan included bringing the best artists in the world as well as the best artists in our region to our stages. In addition to our resident partners, Kentucky Center Presents has brought a variety of artists ranging from Harry Connick Jr. to Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and everything in between. The success of our efforts is evidenced by the number of appreciative audiences that attended our events. In the past year alone, we’ve been honored to welcome more than 500,000 visitors to The Kentucky Center, Brown Theatre, and Iroquois Amphitheater making us one of the top venues in our class in the world. Beyond performances, nearly 20,000 people attended more than 1,000 events that included conferences, festivals and a variety of private cultural and corporate functions. The Center continued to grow in reach, initiating new programs to bring the benefits of arts education and experiences to underserved parts of the city, state and region. Our signature community arts and education programs including The Kentucky Center Governor’s School for the Arts, School Programs, Arts in Healing, and ArtsReach impacted more than 25,000 people in 113 counties.

I AM ALI CELEBRATION
He made boxing into performance art. What better place to celebrate his legacy. Muhammad Ali’s life was monumental, not only through his athletic accomplishments but through his humanitarian contributions. To mark the passing of this Louisville legend, The Kentucky Center hosted the inaugural I AM ALI festival in partnership with the City of Louisville and the Muhammad Ali Center. The celebration stretched from the front steps of the Kentucky Center, echoed through the building and transformed the adjacent Belvedere lawn into a diverse performance space, as hundreds of families and children gathered to express their love and respect for Ali through the arts. The celebration is part of the Kentucky Center’s commitment to civic partnerships, and was conducted in collaboration with Jefferson County Public Schools, Kentucky Science Center, The Frazier International History Museum, Louisville Zoo, Louisville Free Public Library, Actors Theatre, Kentucky Derby Museum, American Printing House for the Blind, and many other local arts and education organizations.

OUR MEMBERS
A round of applause for the people who make this possible: Our Members.
The Kentucky Center salutes its Members. Membership is one of the pillars that upholds The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. Support from individuals throughout the Commonwealth, as well as across state lines, make the entire gamut of our artistic endeavors possible, whether within our physical space on Main Street, at our partner sites through the city, or at numerous spaces in the broader community.
As our numbers continue to grow, our members mirror the diversity of the general population and their interests. We welcome those with a passion for fine performances, arts outreach and education, and anyone who values the arts in their lives.
1,300 Kentucky Center members have enjoyed the benefits of purchasing nearly 3,200 tickets at reduced rates, received premium seats, enjoyed Members-Only VIP rooms before performances, and benefited from other Member-exclusive amenities. Our annual “Thank You event took place on the Whitney Hall stage, where we honored these donors with a party to kick off the new season.

Arts in Healing began a new endeavor to provide ongoing support from the community for area veterans. Called Warrior’s Heart Community, it brings veterans and civilians together to create healing circles that use art, ritual, storytelling, compassion and non-judgmental listening to allow veterans to undergo a return home process and civilians to learn from the veterans’ experiences. After a very successful nine-week pilot project in the spring, during which 12 veterans and 12 civilians created such a healing space, half stayed on through the winter to refine and further understand the process in order to invite new veterans and civilians into the community. It is powerful work and Arts in Healing is very happy to invite everyone into the circle!

THE KENTUCKY CENTER GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS
Putting Kentucky’s young artists at center stage. “Governor’s School for the Arts has helped to bring attention and focus on things that were once almost lost. I strongly believe that because of the Rising Artists Program, my students have a different/better attitude and outlook — we have a new sousaphone, the beginning band program is starting again. Before Rising Artists, I was beginning to really lose all hope and just knew that our music program was almost over, but now I have hope and an incredible desire to continue on!”

LOOKING FORWARD
The Kentucky Center unveils new ways to make a scene.
As part of The Kentucky Center’s ongoing efforts to create a pitch perfect patron experience, the long underutilized bar space got a new identity and expanded customer service. SCENE at the Center, formerly known as The Kentucky Center Bar and East Room, creates a more robust experience for patrons before a show. In addition to enhancements to the space, including a new bar, new furniture, and new layout, the renovated kitchen is now capable of offering theatergoers small plate seasonal menu items prior to Kentucky Center performances.
Scott Darnell, Executive Chef has 25 years of experience in the food service industry, working for several high-profile restaurants in the Louisville area, including Le Relais, Lilly’s, Fox Hollow Farms, La Peche and Cheddar Box. He most recently worked for Somewhere restaurant on Bardstown Road.
His background includes multiple facets of food service, including fine dining, catering and gourmet to go. His experience with Southern-inspired small plates plays a role in his food selections and concepts at SCENE at the Center. Patrons are already enjoying the food experience Scott has created, which blends his classical training with small-plate-focused, homegrown Southern comfort food.
