2X JUNO WINNER 7X JUNO NOMINEE 5 X M M VA W I N N E R 1 7 X M M VA N O M I N E E

CLASSIFIED Juno Award-winner and hit-maker, Classified, also known as Luke Boyd, has long been making waves at home and abroad with his trademark style and sound. With each release, the rapperproducer elevates his game; sharpening word play, experimenting with new sounds, and perfecting his flow.

4 | SUM M ER E V E N T S G U ID E

The secret to Classified’s success has always been his inherent ability to break down the barrier between the performer and the man. A dedicated family man, Classified’s charisma and approachability extends to both his on-stage and off-stage personas that engage even the most discerning hip-hop fans and critics alike.

LOGAN STAATS Once in a red moon, an artist emerges on the scene as if fully formed. Born on the Six Nations Reserve and raised in the small ghost town of Brantford, Ontario - Logan Staats started writing and performing music in his early teens. Logan is fresh off his win on The Launch, a new TV show that gives Canadian singers a shot at stardom.

Staats was chosen out of 10,000 applicants to be featured on the inaugural season of the series, and was mentored by Canadian country megastar Shania Twain. The song that Staats performed is called The Lucky Ones, and was written by Grammy nominated songwriter busbee.

ELIJAH WILL AERIALIST SACHIKO BRAYSHAW WITH STRING QUARTET FROM THE THUNDER BAY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Born and raised in Thunder Bay, Sachiko started dance and gymnastics around the age of 5, developing a love of movement and sequins at a young age. On a trip in 2014, she

discovered Acro yoga and Aerial Silks and decided she needed to do these things. With nowhere to learn in Thunder Bay she began to teach herself with a small group of people in Thunder Bay, and then went to the Toronto School of Circus Arts for aerial training in fall 2015. Wanting to share this passion with others, she went to Acro yoga teacher training in Montreal (2016) and Aerial teacher training in Los Angeles (2017). She loves the sense of empowerment, confidence and strength her students gain through learning these arts.

MARTIN BLANCHET JAZZ QUINTET: CAFÉ PARIS Café Paris is one of Thunder Bay’s premier jazz ensembles featuring some of the city’s most diverse and talented musicians. The band was created in November of 2015 by Martin Blanchet. It is one of his many bands that perform under the

HUNT & GATHER

Hunt & Gather is a product of the North, where long forged friendships provide an escape from the dreariness of the working week. Where uncommon visions come together, where art and inspiration intersects to create a matrix of our own design. With progressive influences pushing

at the envelope, Hunt & Gather seeks to move people through the sheer force of their intent, by creating energy so pure and intense it inherently draws focus. Ever loyal we remain to the drive within our hearts lest it become the wives tale of what we intended to be.

THE NORTHERN PIKES The Northern Pikes have been a band for over 34 years, but you’re going to have to forgive them if they’re acting like a new group. In a way, it is a fresh start. The Pikes recently completed a special 30th anniversary edition of their beloved debut album Big Blue Sky. As the crowds at their recent festival shows can attest, there’s

1 6 | SUM M E R E V E N T S G U ID E

W E S TE R N CA N A DA MUSIC HALL OF FAME a real fire on stage. “The band in many ways sounds better than it ever has,” says bass player Jay Semko. “I just feel there’s solidarity in the songs that we’re playing, I feel like there’s new life to some of the ones we have played forever. It’s the old-fashioned work ethic, dig in, work at it, rehearse, and when you play, come prepared.”

TOURIST BUREAU With a brand new album and video release under their belts, Thunder Bay’s Tourist Bureau are ready for the next big step.

Tourist Bureau’s new album, St. Patrick’s Square consists of 11 songs, the video for the band’s first single, “All Will Be”, has been well received on YouTube with well over 12000 views in its first month of play.

THE ROOSTERS The Roosters are a ‘well-seasoned’ 5-piece ensemble that performs original music as well as an eclectic mix of Blues, Classic Rock and some good ole’ Rock & Roll. Cover tunes span the alphabet from A to Z. To finish off the mix, just add in a sprinkling of The Roosters’ originals.

THUNDER BAY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA The Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra is proud to be a part of the cultural fabric of Thunder Bay, celebrating our 58th anniversary season. Though classical music performances date back to 1903 and the Port Arthur Philharmonic Society, the Lakehead Symphony (as we were once called) was not officially formed until 1961. Today, we are the largest fully professional arts group in the city and the only professional orchestra between Toronto and Winnipeg. The gifted artists of the TBSO perform nearly 50 concerts annually, a wealth of musical gems and wonderful new sounds, with flawless virtuosity and the

power that can only be experienced live. Audiences enjoy our magnificent Main Stage concerts in the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium, Canada’s finest concert hall; relaxed Northern Lights evenings in the Italian Cultural Centre; intriguing House concerts at Hilldale Lutheran Church; and delightful Family concerts at Grassroots Church. We are also committed to education programming and touring of the region. For more information about the TBSO or to ask for a brochure call 626.TBSO or visit our website at www.tbso.ca. RAINE HAMILTON STRING TRIO Resonant, acoustic chamber folk with an otherworldly edge, and a lyric presence that cuts deep. Prism-clear vocals and strings; A combination of vocal agility and power. Raine’s new album, Night Sky, tips between the earthly and the otherworldly;

it is anchored in relatable lived experience, while reaching into the space just beyond, thinning the veil between here and there, affording safe passage to the rough and beautiful places.

ZACHARY LUCKY Zachary Lucky’s Everywhere A Man Can Be is a rare album that transcends the boundaries of folk and country, simply by seeking the truth. Already hailed as a master storyteller by outlets ranging from No Depression to Exclaim!, Lucky’s new nine-song collection is his most powerful statement to date, with his sonic palette given a wide range of new colours through contributions from some notable Canadian indie rock names, led by producer and pedal steel virtuoso Aaron Goldstein.

SHRED KELLY Soaked in electric crescendos and folk tinged sing-along anthems, Shred Kelly is known for their high energy live show that ignites dance floors with their alternative folk sound. Over three albums and countless tours, the five British Columbians have developed their signature sound by taking inspiration from the mountains they hail from and the people who inhabit them. Shred Kelly has seamlessly fused traditional instrumentation with modern

rock, presenting a sound that is both unique and compelling. Shred Kelly has produced their most ambitious project yet with their fourth album Archipelago. The group has also achieved a growing list of awards and recognition; five Kootenay Music Awards, one Western Canadian Music Award, over one million spotify plays, CBC recognition and media attention in Canada, USA, and Germany.

NICK SHERMAN Nick Sherman’s songs are characterized by an uneasy, yet always fluid transition between unabashed joy and sorrow. This tension between major and minor is rooted in Nick’s distant memories of his grandfather strumming a guitar in a cabin on the trapline or back at home in the community. Hailing from Northwestern Ontario, Nick spent his childhood traveling between his birthplace of Sioux Lookout and the remote, First Nation community of

Weagamow Lake and North Caribou Lake trapline. Nick released his full-length, debut album, ‘Drag Your Words Through’, on January 20th with funding from The Ontario Arts Council. Nick’s earnest and thoughtful lyrics are carried by a contemporaryfolk sound that is bolstered by guest appearances from several Thunder Bay musicians. The end result is an eclectic mix that features a cheerful horn section, accordions, and banjos among a host of several others.

JEAN-PAUL DE ROOVER With an innovative and original approach to music, Jean-Paul De Roover is much more than just a solo artist. Live looping with guitars and a voice used as an instrument this multi-instrumentalist constructs his songs piece by piece before your eyes. Although he was born in Thunder Bay, ON, De Roover was raised overseas in Africa, Asia and South America before moving back to Canada in 2001. He has worked hard to develop his one-man-show, touring relentlessly in North America and Europe since 2007. 2018 S U MME R E VE NTS GU ID E | 25

DAN DAVIDSON Alberta’s newest up and coming country sensation Dan Davidson exploded onto the Canadian country scene in 2016 with the release of his second single “Found” (Co-written by Clayton Bellamy of The Road Hammers). THE ZOLAS Anyone who caught on to the slow-burn success of 2012’s desolately hook-laden Ancient Mars could sense that something in The Zolas was threatening to bubble over, and after a year of recording, 2015’s Swooner (Light Organ Records) shows an alternative pop collaboration at the top of their creative game.

2017 JUNO NOMINEE Swooner moves on from Ancient Mars’ lost love and nostalgia into a cross-section of conversations between a generation of friends about life in 2015; the balancing act we all reckon with between fun and dread. The album garnered a 2017 Juno nomination for Breakthrough Group of the Year.

THE TREBLE Formed in 2008, The Treble have been slowly carving out their place in the Canadian music scene with engaging songs, a passionate live show, and drive to give back to the community through their up all night fundraiser “24 Shows in 24 Hours. With a dark, casual, and confident alt-rock sound,

The Treble mix strong melodies and anthemic harmonies with lyrics about friendship, travel and staving off the real world. Songs from their first two independent EPs garnered radio airplay, and saw the band do several cross country tours and play multiple international events.

OCEAN CITY DEFENDER Ocean City Defender is the performing name of Ontario-based multi-instrumentalist K. Preston Merkley. Far from the typical sounds of a solo-performer, Ocean City Defender creates lush synthpop songs both on stage and record.
