Let’s Start School Together! Your child is very important to us, and we can’t wait to meet and work with you, your child, and your family! It is a priority for us to make sure that this happens, beginning with you and your child feeling welcome and at home at your public school.

SUPPLIES

SNACKS& LUNCH

LAKEHEAD PUBLIC SCHOOLS

As you prepare your child to begin school, talk about why these school supplies are important! Ensure that all supplies are labeled clearly!

14

A medium sized backpack Not too big that your child can not carry it and not too small that it won’t hold your child’s snack, lunch, and book bag.

A pair of indoor shoes with Velcro to leave at school These shoes will be worn everyday. For reasons of cleanliness, students are not allowed to wear outside shoes in the classroom (please have Velcro on your child’s outdoor shoes as well). A change of clothes Accidents do happen.* A change of clothing should include underwear, socks, pants, and a top that your child will keep at school. This way we will not need to call you at work or at home if a change of clothing is required. Please remember to replace clothing should the need arise. * It is the expectation of Lakehead Public Schools that your child is potty trained before starting school. Considerations will be made for children who have medical conditions that interfere with regular potty training.

Each day, your child will need a lunch and snacks. We encourage healthy eating and suggest that you prepare your child’s snacks and lunch with your child to ensure all is child-approved and therefore eaten. Suggestions: • • • • • •

Fresh fruit (apple, a pre-cut orange, banana, raisins, grapes, cantaloupe, etc.) Vegetable sticks (carrots, celery, broccoli, cucumber, with or without dip, etc.) Crackers Cheese Yogurt Pudding

Please do not send beverages in glass containers since the risk of being hurt is too great if one should accidentally break. If you wish, you may place an ice-pack in your child’s lunch box in order to keep the lunch and snacks cold all day. Talk to your child about allergies and why it’s important not to share snacks or lunch. For more information about healthy living, please visit the Thunder Bay District Health Unit website at: www.tbdhu.com

ADVANCED PLACEMENT

Advanced Placement Challenge Yourself! Advanced Placement is a program that offers students the opportunity to participate in a more challenging academic program whose ultimate goal is to give students the option to take standardized Advanced Placement exams in Grade 12. Depending on the results and the university, students may receive advanced standing or university credit in first year.

LAKEHEAD PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Is AP Right for Me? Are you: • an independent and motivated learner with a strong work ethic? • an avid reader and effective communicator? • a strong critical and creative thinker who enjoys solving problems and analyzing how things work? • curious about the world around you and eager to challenge yourself to expand your learning in high school? Students interested in Advanced Placement will begin taking Pre-AP courses in Grade 9. These courses, in addition to covering The Ontario Curriculum, will be enriched academic courses with the goal of exposing students to the vocabulary and style of AP examinations. It should be noted that students will be evaluated in exactly the same way as students in the regular academic stream; the expectations are not greater. The difference is that students will encounter more sophisticated content. These courses will naturally lead to Grade 12 AP courses, at the end of which the students will have the option of writing the AP Examinations, which occur in May each year. For more information about Advanced Placement, please contact Student Services at either Westgate CVI or Hammarskjold HS.

PRESCHOOL E

Designed for the 4 to 12-month-old to learn to enjoy the water with the parent. Orientation to pool and being safe around water. This program will create a comfort level for both child and parent. Entries/exits, floats and movement.

These youngsters get more adventuresome with a forward roll entry wearing a PFD and holding their breath underwater for up to 10 sec. They’ll work on longer front and back crawl swims, interval training and get a giggle out of whip kick. Prerequisite: Completed Preschool D.

PARENT & TOT 2 Designed for the 12 to 24-month-old to learn to enjoy the water with the parent, Unassisted entries/exits. Floats with an aid, submersion in water, activities with instructor/other parents.

PRESCHOOL A We encourage the parent to participate until their child lets them know they can do it themselves (thank you very much). These preschoolers will have fun learning to get in and out of the water. We’ll help them jump into chest deep water. They’ll try floats on their front and back, and glides on their back while wearing a personal flotation device (PFD). They’ll learn to get their face wet and blow bubbles underwater.

AQUATICS

PRESCHOOL B These preschoolers learn to jump into chest deep water by themselves, and get in and get out wearing a personal flotation device. They’ll submerge and exhale underwater. While wearing a personal flotation device they’ll glide on their front and back. Prerequisite: Completed Preschool A.

PRESCHOOL C These youngsters will try both jumping and a side roll into deep water while wearing a personal flotation device. They’ll recover objects from the bottom in waist-deep water. They’ll work on kicking and gliding through the water on their front and back. Prerequisite: Completed Preschool B.

PRESCHOOL D

68

Advanced preschoolers will learn to do solo jumps into deeper water and get out by themselves. They’ll do side roll entries and open their eyes underwater. They’ll master a short (3–5 m) swim on their front and gliding and kicking on their side. Prerequisite: Completed Preschool C.

SWIMMER 1 These beginners will become comfortable jumping into water with and without a personal flotation device. They’ll learn to open their eyes, exhale and hold their breath underwater. They’ll work on floats, glides and kicking through the water on their front and back. Prerequisite: Beginner, non-swimmer or Preschool A, B or C.

SWIMMER 2 These advanced beginners will jump into deeper water, and learn to be comfortable falling sideways into the water wearing a personal flotation device. They’ll be able to support themselves at the surface without an aid, learn whip kick, swim 10–15 m on their front and back, and be introduced to flutter kick interval training (4 x 9–12 m). Prerequisite: Swimmer 1 or Preschool D or E.

SWIMMER 3 These junior swimmers will dive and do in-water front somersaults. Their new bag of tricks includes handstands and completion of the Canadian Swim to Survive® Standard. SWIMMER 4 These intermediate swimmers will swim 5 m underwater and lengths of front, back crawl, whip kick, and breaststroke arms with breathing. They’ll cap it all off with front crawl sprints over 25 m and 4 x 25 m front or back crawl interval training. Prerequisite: Swimmer 3.

SWIMMER 5 These swimmers will master shallow dives, cannonball entries, eggbeater kicks, and in-water backward somersaults. Surface dives will take them down to underwater swims. They’ll refine their front and back crawl over 50 m swims of each, and breaststroke over 15–25m. Then they’ll pick up the pace in 25 m sprints and two interval training bouts: 4 x 50 m front or back crawl; and 4 x 10–15 m breaststroke. Prerequisite: Swimmer 4.

SWIMMER 9 (STAR)

These advanced swimmers will rise to the challenge of sophisticated aquatic skills including stride entries, compact jumps and lifesaving kicks like eggbeater and scissor kick. They’ll develop strength and power in head-up breaststroke sprints over 25 m. They’ll easily swim lengths of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke, and they’ll complain about the 300 m workout. Prerequisite: Swimmer 5.

Swimmers are challenged with 600m workouts; 300m timed swims and a 25 m object carry. Strokes are refined over 100 m swims. First aid focuses on treatment of bone or joint injuries and respiratory emergencies including asthma and allergic reactions. Lifesaving skills include defence methods, victim removals and rolling over and supporting a victim face up in shallow water. Prerequisite: Range Patrol.
