Let’s Start School Together! Your child is very important to us, and we can’t wait to meet and work with you, your child, and your family! We know that you want your child to have the best possible start to his or her school experience. It is a priority for us to make sure that this happens, beginning with you and your child feeling welcome and at home at your public school.

KINDERGARTEN

SUPPLIES

SNACKS& LUNCH

As you prepare your child to begin school, talk about why these school supplies are important! Ensure that all supplies are labeled clearly! A medium sized backpack

LAKEHEAD PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Not too big that your child can not carry it and not too small that it won’t hold your child’s snack, lunch, and book bag.

24

A pair of indoor shoes with Velcro to leave at school These shoes will be worn everyday. For reasons of cleanliness, students are not allowed to wear outside shoes in the classroom (please have Velcro on your child’s outdoor shoes as well). A change of clothes Accidents do happen.* A change of clothing should include underwear, socks, pants, and a top that your child will keep at school. This way we will not need to call you at work or at home if a change of clothing is required. Please remember to replace clothing should the need arise. * It is the expectation of Lakehead Public Schools that your child is potty trained before starting school. Considerations will be made for children who have medical conditions that interfere with regular potty training.

Each day, your child will need a lunch and snacks. We encourage healthy eating and suggest that you prepare your child’s snacks and lunch with your child to ensure all is child-approved and therefore eaten. Suggestions:

• • • • • •

Fresh fruit (apple, a pre-cut orange, banana, raisins, grapes, cantaloupe, etc.) Vegetable sticks (carrots, celery, broccoli, cucumber, with or without dip, etc.) Crackers Cheese Yogurt Pudding

Please do not send beverages in glass containers since the risk of being hurt is too great if one should accidentally break. If you wish, you may place an ice-pack in your child’s lunch box in order to keep the lunch and snacks cold all day. Talk to your child about allergies and why it’s important not to share snacks or lunch. For more information about healthy living, please visit the Thunder Bay District Health Unit website at: www.tbdhu.com

ADVANCED PLACEMENT

Advanced Placement Challenge Yourself! Advanced Placement is a program that offers students the opportunity to participate in a more challenging academic program whose ultimate goal is to give students the option to take standardized Advanced Placement exams in Grade 12. Depending on the results and the university, students may receive advanced standing or university credit in first year.

LAKEHEAD PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Is AP Right for Me? Are you: • an independent and motivated learner with a strong work ethic? • an avid reader and effective communicator? • a strong critical and creative thinker who enjoys solving problems and analyzing how things work? • curious about the world around you and eager to challenge yourself to expand your learning in high school?

28

Students interested in Advanced Placement will begin taking Pre-AP courses in Grade 9. These courses, in addition to covering The Ontario Curriculum, will be enriched academic courses with the goal of exposing students to the vocabulary and style of AP examinations. It should be noted that students will be evaluated in exactly the same way as students in the regular academic stream; the expectations are not greater. The difference is that students will encounter more sophisticated content. These courses will naturally lead to Grade 12 AP courses, at the end of which the students will have the option of writing the AP Examinations, which occur in May each year. For more information about Advanced Placement, please contact Student Services at either Westgate CVI or Hammarskjold HS.

The mask is an iconic symbol of theatre. Through mask work, students will discover new potential and depths as performers, focusing on characterization, voice, emotion and physicality. Students will also explore Commedia dell’Arte, a form of Masked theatre from 16th Century Italy that went on to inspire Shakespeare, Restoration Theatre, Melodrama, Chekhov and Vaudeville.

MASTERCLASS IN DIRECTING (Ages 16+) Thursdays, April 16th – May 21st

$299* 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Hone your skills as a director with one of Canada’s preeminent theatre practitioners. In a professional career spanning decades, Mario Crudo has directed countless productions. Prior to becoming Magnus Theatre’s longest serving Artistic Director (1992-2016), Mario was Associate Director at The Arts Club Theatre in Vancouver and directed plays across Canada. This course examines the directing process from conceptualization to rehearsal, in relation to both actors and audiences. Students will have the opportunity to take risks and apply knowledge through directing a short piece for an in-class showcase.
