CONTENTS If you’re in northern Europe or the USA then – generally speaking – it’s not been the best few months for kiting… The wind has been pretty light and for most of us it’s not been one of ‘those’ winter and spring seasons that we’ll be talking about for years to come…

Thankfully summer is now pretty much upon us, so we can begin looking forward to those dependable thermal winds or, if they’re not a feature at your local spot, start planning THE BIG SUMMER TRIP!

There are so many options where you can guarantee good wind, and then ‘pick and mix’ what else you want from your trip. You want to party as well? Tarifa. You want to kite from dawn to dusk and then just eat and sleep? Dakhla. Time for that once-in-a-lifetime trip? Mauritius / Turks and Caicos / Brazil / Maui. The fact is you could head to somewhere different every year for the rest of your days and still not exhaust all of the options.

KITE OPTIONS? A 9 and a 12, with the 9 being the primary option.
TYPICAL DINNER Big fan of curry and rice? Good. Because it’s a staple here.
WHICH WETSUIT? Most of the time, you can forget the wetsuit, as essentially it’s the temperature of bathwater. But good sun protection is a must, so rashies/boardies/ sunscreen.
LATE NIGHT… Here it’s all about relaxing with friends in the tropical heat with a couple of bottles of Lion (the local beer of choice) to see away the evening before you get up and do it all again. And if the beer doesn’t cut it, you can always hit the ‘arrack’…
BEER €1.70 / $2 / £1.60

Bandaranaike Airport in Colombo is Sri Lanka’s main international airport, and most major European airports can get you here. It’s then a three hour drive north from there. Most kite centers can arrange your transfer. But the real adventurers arrange it themselves...
THE LOWDOWN The Puttalam Peninsula on the west coast is the area of Sri Lanka that has recently opened up to kiteboarders from around the world, due to the trade wind consistency, myriad butter-smooth lagoons, and a lifestyle that is both laid back and non-expensive. Arugam Bay on the east coast is also an old favorite that continues to draw a faithful kite contingent. And should the wind drop, this is an island with plenty of potential for adventure…
WHEN IS BEST TO GO? Summer is from May to October, the windiest bit, averaging at over 20 knots, with the peak part of the season having good winds pretty much every single day! Winter winds tend to be a little lighter and less reliable, but the odds of having some classic days are still high, as Sri Lanka is still a good year-round option. NO WIND? Famous for its national parks, tea plantations and an elephant orphanage, Sri Lanka is an island with all manner of adventure options for when the wind drops, but the savvy kiteboarder should really figure some of this into their trip no matter the conditions. But if you’re looking for a no-wind quick fix, then hit the seafood restaurants followed by a few beers – the wind will be back in no time!
KITING SET UP Lagoons aplenty with silky flat waters made just so by gentle offshore breezes makes for some pretty darn perfect (and reliable) freestyle options up and down the coast. Hook up with Kitesurfinglanka to make the most of their prime, butter-flat and crowd-free spot, or ask their advice on other nearby and highly favorable spots, many of which they can get you to via a catamaran! KITE OPTIONS? Typical kite sizes for October and November are 7 and 9 (ladies: 5 and 7), the other months you may want to consider up to 12 (ladies: 9) as well. WHICH WETSUIT? levels of riders, from beginners to hardcore freestylers. If you’re into waves simply sail out to the ocean and enjoy the chop and waves there. The best time of day for beginners is low tide, where you can launch right on the main beach.
GETTING THERE The nearest major domestic airport to Atins and the Lençóis Maranhenses is São Luís (SLZ). The closest international airports are in Fortaleza (FOR), Belem (BEL) or Natal (NAT), from where you can fly on to São Luís. Many domestic or international flights might also be routed via the capital Brasília (BSB). Many kiters choose to arrive in Atins following the downwind route from Fortaleza, along the coastlines of the states of Ceará, Piauí and finally Maranhão. There are plenty of worthwhile kite spots to be explored en route.
WHEN IS BEST TO GO? Thanks to the trade winds, Brazil’s entire northeast coast is as safe a bet as it gets when it comes to constant winds. From July to December you’re guaranteed to kite, with October and November seeing the strongest winds of up to 30 knots. The wind is a constant cross/on-shore to the beach.

anything like R$10 for a simple burger to R$90 for a large pizza (two people). Oftentimes dishes are proportioned for two people as this is a Brazilian custom, so check on that before ordering. LATE NIGHT… Atins is celebrated for its remote and natural setting and most people adapt their rhythm to a more chilled lifestyle. There are restaurants and some bars and clubs though.
THE LOWDOWN Located 600km west of Fortaleza, the legendary town of Atins offers kitesurfing perfection. Set in the delta of the River Preguiças, the rivermouth creates ever changing sandbanks and knee deep lagoons. Coupled with its consistent strong winds, kiters encounter perfect conditions day after day in this part of the world. The village sits right at the entrance of the magical Lençóis Maranhenses, a unique and surreal desert landscape that mixes white sand dunes with rich underground water supplies that form crystal clear blue and turquoise lagoons. A truly amazing place to come and kitesurf!
NO WIND? Wind is almost guaranteed from July to mid-January. In case you should come across an extremely rare weak or no-wind day, go and check out the famous Lençóis Maranhenses. It‘s an experience not to be missed! If you‘re addicted to water, there’s always SUP, fishing or just relaxing in the hammock!
KITING SET UP There are two take off spots on Atins beach which give access to a huge tidal saltwater lagoon. The ever changing sandbanks make for sublime warm flatwater conditions. Perfect conditions for all Destination Guide

Easy indeed. Most international airlines have Portugal on their schedule, so choose either Porto for northerly destinations, Lisbon for central, or Faro airport for all things south.
THE LOWDOWN Portugal is a popular European destination, and for good reason: it’s got it all. West coast waves and south coast butter-flat loveliness, all within easy reach on Portugal’s excellent roads, in a country that is known for its friendly, welcoming vibe and cheap accommodation options and flights, and has a historic and cultural abundance. What’s not to like! KITING SET UP You can divide Portugal up into three main areas. In the Algrave in the south, you have the choice of the Atlantic-facing coastline that gets plenty of swell and plenty of size… make a beeline for Carrapateira if that’s your thing. Otherwise you can nip around the corner and enjoy flatwater paradise, with your choice of beaches and lagoons all the way from Lagos to Faro. In the central region, west of Lisbon, you can seek your spot of choice up and down the coastline, or hit well-known spots such as Guincho, or (and this is not for the faint-hearted as we’re sure you’re aware) Destination Guide

the legendary big wave spot that is Nazaré. There is also a range of kite schools to choose from along this whole stretch. Then up in the north you have consistently good conditions that really turn on between March and October, enjoying northerly Nortada winds, and optimum freestyle conditions with a heap of good lagoons and rivermouths to choose from, as well as plenty of waveriding options too. WHEN IS BEST TO GO? From May to September you can pretty much guarantee the Nortada winds, which will pick up earlier in the day the more northerly you are, but then sits in almost all day long, and is reliable and epic. Through the wintertime, you’ll still get plenty of wind, and a whole lot of swell for the waveriders too. NO WIND? Grab a surfboard…. Portugal is well known for its optimum surfing conditions, and features world-class breaks such as Supertubes and Coxos. Beyond that, SUP is prevalent, and there’s some great exploring to be done, and fishing is popular too. Portugal is also teeming with historical culture, so it’s worth a day in one of the big cities to enjoy some of that. Deep inland are vineyards, several of which are open to visitors, or, failing all of this, you could just kick back with a warm pastel de nata or two, a big glass of port, and wait for the wind to return… 14

LE MORNE

3/5
With 330 kilometers of Indian Ocean-facing coastline, Mauritius offers a variety of different spots to suit any level of kitesurfer. Here are a few of the best options as investigated by Janine Avery… 16
Heading down to the kitesurf beach at Le Morne, it became clear that this little piece of kiting heaven is no longer a hidden gem. Kites lined the beach, beginners dotted the shoreline and kiter’s families and friends had set up camp under the shade of the trees. Heading out with our kites, the wind was blowing onshore at about 20 knots and we joined the throngs for a fantastic afternoon out on the water. While beginners attempted water starts, intermediates practiced new tricks and wave enthusiasts headed out to One Eye to see what all the fuss was about… The vibe was fantastic, the wind consistent, the water warm – who could ask for anything more? WHO’S IT FOR? Le Morne is a wave enthusiast’s paradise. The world-renowned One Eye attracts expert kitesurfers the world over, while a number of other waves are perfect for intermediates. You could compare it to a ski resort – with different waves offering different grades according to your skill level. THE HIGHLIGHTS Between July and September the wind in Le Morne is reliably consistent. There are also two centers to choose from – one on the beach at the lagoon and one at the hotel at St Regis which offers a VIP Prestige service. They also offer a rescue
boat service for wave sailors who want to feel more secure. The hotels are located within walking distance of the kitesurfing area and non-kiting family and friends can get an eyeful of the action right from the beach.
• TOP TIP As with many of the kiting spots in Mauritius, it is advisable to wear booties. Coral lines the seabed and while the large lagoon is shallow enough to stand in most places you don’t want to end your kitesurfing experience with sore feet.
WHERE TO STAY The St. Regis Mauritius is located right next to the main kitesurf beach. During the windy season, this fantastic 5-star luxury resort offers amazing special offers with Planet Kitesurf Holidays, including free room upgrades, free upgrades to all-inclusive, free massages and more, making it more affordable than you might think.
THE HIGHLIGHTS With a large beach and wind that blows sideshore, beginners don’t have to walk upwind after each attempt as they would at Anse La Raie or Le Morne. With fewer kiters on the water than the other spots in Mauritius, this is also a great spot if you are still learning.
BELLE MARE • TOP TIP The beginner’s lagoon can get pretty busy during the peak months of August and September. If you really want to progress quickly, away from the crowds, book the VIP Prestige service with ION Club at the St. Regis and enjoy a boat transfer out to a quiet sandbank in the lagoon where you can kitesurf without anyone else around. You will also benefit from your own private instructor and the services of a boat which will take you upwind again after a good run. Destination Guide
The wind thumps the eastern coastline of Mauritius, making me a bit nervous when I headed out for a morning kitesurf at Belle Mare. The rain was also coming in with light squalls, bringing with it some strong gusts… however I vowed not to let the weather put me off, and I am glad I did. While the bad weather meant there was no one else on the water the day I went out, I quickly discovered during the days I was there that this is not a place that ever really gets too busy. With fewer people on the water, the KiteGlobing center at Belle Mare
can really offer personalized attention and they use a boat in all their beginner’s lessons so that you can get out beyond the small fishing boats strung up near the shoreline. Being able to progress quickly in a lagoon in which I was completely on my own to enjoy really made for an fantastic kiting experience. WHO’S IT FOR? This being Mauritius’s windy coastline, the season in Belle Mare extends virtually all year round. Freestylers will love this spot, with a wide flat water lagoon where you can practice your tricks. With KiteGlobing’s boat on hand, beginners are also ensured fast progression.
WHERE TO STAY LUX Belle Mare is located within a five minute drive of the center and if you really know what you’re doing you can even kite off the beach right in front of the hotel. This gorgeous property offers an opulent atmosphere and the ideal place to kick back and be pampered. Another five minutes further up the coast, the more affordable Solana Beach resort is a laid back adults-only retreat. All their rooms are sea facing so you are guaranteed a view of that gorgeous blue ocean Mauritius is famous for!
17
MAURITIUS • TOP TIP Anse La Raie is not as busy as Le Morne but is still very popular, especially with locals who flock to the beach on the weekend. If you want to enjoy the spot without the crowds then book your lessons for early morning during the week. There is also little else around the center so be sure to pack in some drinks and snacks in case you need a break.
ANSE LA RAISE Heading to the north of the island, I was greeted at ION Club Anse La Raie by the jolly smiles and crazy hairdo of Simo, the center manager. Simo and his team run the center here with an abundance of smiles, and I could tell they were really super excited to welcome us to their little piece of paradise. The wind was blowing directly on shore which made for tiring walk-outs as I am only just attempting to go upwind and even though the 18
little lagoon was busy on the weekend, I never felt too boxed in. Kiters who had already mastered their skills headed out to the waves on the reef, however with no center close by or rescue boats to speak of, I wasn’t quite ready to take the plunge into the big blue. WHO’S IT FOR? With fewer kiters than Le Morne and a lagoon that extends almost as far as the eye can see, Anse La Raie is a great spot for independent kiters who don’t want to be hemmed in. However, as men-
tioned, the level of safety cover is lacking so you do this at your own risk. For beginners sticking close to shore, the little lagoon area for learning is just right. THE HIGHLIGHTS The small section for beginners can get a bit tight but is surrounded by rocky islets, you feel safe and secure and can stand throughout so learning is easy. The team is fun and enthusiastic and definitely adds another dimension to the experience. The vibe here is also more relaxed than Le Morne and you can really get into the chilled island way of life. WHERE TO STAY LUX Grand Gaube has just recently reopened and offers a magical, luxury experience with quirky touches just a 10 minute drive from the center. Dine in their fabulous Turkish restaurant, grab a burger on the beach, choose your flavor at their vintage ice-cream limo or taste island rums in their treehouse bar. You may never want to leave! For those looking for a more intimate stay, 20 Degrees South is one of the best boutique hotels on the island and is located just a 20 minute drive away. Definitely be sure to splash out and book one of their Austral Suites – with your own private pool this romantic room is perfect for a kiting honeymoon.
Destination Guide
BEL OMBRE Bel Ombre is only a short drive from Le Morne and gets similar wind but it feels like you are in a different place entirely. It is all pretty chilled out with less kites on the water and an altogether mellower vibe. WHO’S IT FOR? Bel Ombre is perfect for learning to kitesurf. It really doesn’t matter when the wind fills in as your
hotel is right next door so you can enjoy your facilities and just head out when it suits. The team at the center here also offer downwinders for all skill levels (including beginners) so you can discover a bit more of Mauritius with your kite – a completely unique adventure! THE HIGHLIGHTS Bel Ombre has it all. The center is located within the C Beach Club at the Heritage Hotel with all the facilities one would expect from a 5 star hotel. A stunning pool, restaurant and water sports center
• TOP TIP As the wind can be a bit fluky, be sure to pack a range of kites. If you have the right size kite you won’t be disappointed if the wind is too light or too strong during your time here. However if you did leave your stuff at home, the center does has over 120 of the latest kites in stock should you need to rent.
are located on the same site and the changing rooms and facilities easily surpass those on offer at any other center on the island. This is really a place you can spend the entire day and friends and family members can enjoy the time with you. WHERE TO STAY With the center located right within the Heritage Hotel, you don’t need to look any further to find the perfect place to stay. Heritage Le Telfair is the luxury side of this sprawling resort complex, located the closest to the kitesurfing center. For those looking for an amazing value-for-money getaway with great food, the Outrigger is just next to the Heritage and the KiteGlobing team will pick you up from their jetty if you have a lesson booked with them.

MAURITIUS
• TOP TIP When you’re not out kiting, be sure to enjoy some of the other activities available here. This is the ideal place to board a speedboat or catamaran cruise to discover some of Mauritius’ most picturesque points. A day spent out on a catamaran, snorkeling, enjoying an onboard barbeque and relaxing on the white sandbank of Ile aux Cerfs is an absolute must do! The uninhabited island of Ile Aux Aigrettes is also located just off the shoreline at Pointe d’Esny. This nature reserve is well worth a visit to discover the natural trees and birdlife of the island - look out for the indigenous ebony and the pink pigeon!
POINTE D’ESNY Pointe d’Esny is Mauritius’ undiscovered paradise. Here a long white stretch of beach leads to an expansive lagoon that runs for as far as the eye can see. The winds are lighter than places like Le Morne and so it’s ideal for foilers who will love the flat, deep waters found here. Beginners can also enjoy lessons off a boat and with a center that’s run by the guy that developed the click bar, you are guaranteed good instruction. The real charm of Pointe d'Esny is that it is located away from the crowds and commercial resorts found elsewhere in Mauritius. 20
WHO’S IT FOR? Located a mere 15-minute drive from the airport, Pointe d'Esny is perfect for anyone that doesn’t want to travel too far. With a large flat water lagoon and light to moderate winds, it provides a haven for foilers and those who want to learn how to kite foil. THE HIGHLIGHTS There is a small school operated here by the Mauritian kitesurfer that developed the click-bar and with few people on the water you can really enjoy the place to yourself. Just off a sparkling white beach, a deep flat water lagoon stretches
out for a long distance before the reef, providing a blue playground that is just perfect for foiling. The wind here is generally South or South-East which is cross-shore. The wind is consistent and clean but is lighter than some of the more popular kitesurf spots on the island so big kites are needed while foiling is the real highlight of this destination. The best months to kitesurf at Pointe d'Esny is between June and September, but you can find wind here all year round.
More than just a kitesurfing holiday...
WHERE TO STAY Pointe d'Esny offers a secluded, peaceful location in one of Mauritius' untouched areas and you can stay in a luxury apartment right on the beach if you want to feel like one of the locals. Those looking for the true tropical paradise just have to head to Preskil Island Resort, a newly renovated property on its own peninsula who offer boat pick ups for the kitesurf center just round the corner.

LATE NIGHT… When the sun goes down there are plenty of options to enjoy the local nightlife. Just a few minutes out of Lo Stagnone is the open air disco at Chiedilaluna, and beyond that you have the buzzing center of Marsala, where you can pick up a cocktail and enjoy live music.
THE LOWDOWN On the westernmost part of Sicily, as part of a very picturesque nature reserve, sits the resort of Lo Stagnone, perfectly positioned on the shores of a large, sandy and shallow flat-water lagoon. It’s ideal for learners, and with a multitude of little islands on the farther reaches of the lagoon, it’s ideal for advanced riders too, with plenty of exploring to be done through the salt pans and salina walls. Winds are steady all year, and the air and water temperatures are generally pretty high… KITING SET UP Lo Stagnone is situated halfway between the cities of Marsala and Trapani (the latter having the closest airport). ProKite Alby Rondina – the main kite school in Lo Stagnone – sits on the lagoon, is open all year round, and has ample space to launch and land, right on the beach. There is also a grassy, spacious beginner’s area close by too, which is perfect for those just starting out. The lagoon itself is huge,

enjoys reliable wind conditions, and has plenty of alternative accommodation options nearby. WHEN IS BEST TO GO? Lo Stagnone happens to be one of the windiest kitesurfing locations in the whole of Italy, having two opposing wind systems: the Scirocco and the Mistral, while also enjoying strong thermal winds as a result of the cooler temperatures of the open ocean, and the warm, shallow waters of the lagoon. This means that Lo Stagnone is lucky enough to get a solid 300 days of wind per year, with a summer average of 16 knots, and an air temperature of 25-30 Celsisus. Through the rest of the year, the winds are a little less reliable, but also a little stronger, creating unique and fun new spots across the lagoon. In winter, the strength tends to increase again, and wetsuits are advised. NO WIND? Rich in culture and history, you’ll never get bored when the wind drops in Sicily. Near to Lo Stagnone is Favignana island, which has an abundance of beautiful beaches to laze around on, or you can take a cable car up to the historical mountain village of Erice, not far from Trapani, which itself is also worth visiting. You can also keep it close to base, taking in the vast saltpans and windmills that are dotted around the lagoon, or you can just book yourself out an SUP or a bike and keep it nice and simple! 24

LATE NIGHT… In Tarifa you are spoilt for nightlife options. Bars are generally open until 2am, and for those who want to go later, Café Del Mar on the outskirts of town is open until 5am…
Three main options: fly into Gibraltar, which is just 45 minutes from Tarifa; fly in to Malaga, at two hours away; or hit Jerez with Ryanair, 1.5 hours away.
THE LOWDOWN It’s for good reason that Tarifa is the capital kiteboarding destination of Europe. 10k of kite-perfect beach, perfect winds, and all manner of fun to be had in the old town after dark… KITING SET UP The winds in Tarifa are either Poniente, coming from the sea, making it lighter and more consistent, or Levante which comes from the land. This is a hotter wind that can be gusty and strong. The 10k set up runs from Tarifa town to Valdavaqueros, so plenty of space and generally flat waters, with many ‘chirinquitos’ along the sands where you can pit stop and fill your belly with fine foods. Do note that in high summer, the kiting is restricted from Los Lances to Valdavaqueros, and plenty of people means that the earlybirds (i.e. those who are up before midday) will catch the most glorious and uncrowded part of the day. In winter, a lagoon appears during certain tides, increasing your range of kiteable spots, while out on the water, occasional swells bring waves to Tarifa.

WHEN IS BEST TO GO? The season runs from Easter until late October, but June to the end of September is the optimum time to hit Tarifa, with winds 90% of the time. But you can hit this place year-round with a pretty sweet chance of scoring good conditions. June is the prime month: pre-crowds, thermic days with consistent winds, plenty of space and warm, warm weather. NO WIND? There’s surfing to be done in the winter as the swells land, but throughout the year you can SUP, mountain bike, go whale watching, ride horses, go shopping… or just smash a load of cocktails on the beach.

TYPICAL DINNER Canarians love their food. Go get some papas arrugadas, seafood, or goats cheese and delicious meats. LATE NIGHT… The Fuerte Action Bar in Costa Calma is where it’s at. Bands, burgers, cocktails and delicious ice-creams.
GETTING THERE Fuerte is a 4-5 hour flight from mainland Europe, landing at the airport near Puerto del Rosario.
THE LOWDOWN The Canary Island archipelago, in which Fuerteventura sits, is a volcanic formation of islands just off the northwest coast of Africa, with each island having its own characteristics. In comparison to some of its more tourist-loaded neighbors, Fuerte retains a more laid back and relaxed atmosphere. It’s also blessed with year round wind, waves and sunshine (approximately 3000 hours a year) and is a short hop from most European airports. The predominantly dry and desert landscape can at first seem harsh, but its charms ring through, and the lush beaches and beautiful turquoise waters are extremely beguiling indeed… KITING SET UP In the southern part of the island you’ll find the Rene Egli center, set in a palm-fringed oasis, right in the heart of Sotavento´s strong-wind zone. The wide beach allows the wind to blow strong and consistently, offering perfect conditions for accomplished kiters, while a sheltered lagoon is ideal for beginners. NO WIND? For those highly rare times when the wind isn’t playing ball, you can take your pick of a range of activities to be found on this island in the sun. Surfing is popular here, with a handful of worldclass breaks to be found in the north. You can also SUP, kayak, snorkel, or – if you’re in the north of the island – you can take dune buggy excursions, or take a ferry trip to one of the outer islands to look at some pretty crazy landscapes… Failing that, you could hit the party towns in Lanzarote, just a 30 minute ferry ride away. 29

GETTING THERE
DAKHLA 5/5
2/5
5/5
KITE OPTIONS? Bring a nice and safe 9 and a 12… WHICH WETSUIT? November to April – something long. May to October – boardies, tee and suncream, or a shortie for longer sessions. BEER €5 / $5.80 / £4.50 TYPICAL DINNER It’s all about tagines in Morocco! Load up on fish or meat and couscous. The dinner of champion kiters! 32
Royal Air Maroc is the predominant carrier into Dakhla Airport, and low cost flights are available from the UK, Germany, Switzerland and elsewhere across Europe. Flight times vary depending on transfers, but you’re generally looking at 6-8 hours from Europe. Then the drive to the lagoon is around 30 minutes.
2/5
LATE NIGHT… Dakhla is all about the kiting. All of the centers have bars which will stay open pretty late and have themed nights, but it’s no Tarifa if big nights out are on your agenda…
Safety boats from the various centers are often chugging around, and there’s always space to go play by yourself should you want to. There are also a few wave spots on the coast nearby, including the epic Pointe D’Or, which does require an off-road vehicle to access – something many of the kite camps can arrange. Although there is less in the way of wind at the wave spots, it can be chillier so a 4/3 or 3/2 wettie is advised.
THE LOWDOWN The Dakhla setup consists of an enormous, 45kmlong lagoon that runs parallel to the Atlantic Ocean, providing the perfect spot to learn how to kitesurf. The wind is super consistent, the water is warm and flat and there’s plenty of room for everyone despite the handful of kite camps that dot the edges. And with well over 300 windy, sunny days year round, it’s a pretty safe option when booking your next kiting vacation…
WHEN IS BEST TO GO? Wind is in no short supply in Dakhla, with an average of 320 days of the year hitting 15-22 knots, thanks to the trade winds that blow between the Canaries and Cape Verde. Mid-March until October is high season, with winds peaking through July and August, ranging from 19-30 knots, with the strongest winds generally around lunchtime.
KITING SET UP The Dakhla peninsula extends down the side of the lagoon, ending in the entrance to the Atlantic Ocean, over 40km to the south. During high tide, there is a shallow, standing range that extends up to 300m out into the lagoon, with very flat water, making it a very accessible and safe place to ride. Destination Guide
33
On the coast, swells kick in from the end of October and run consistently through to March. Heat-wise, and it’s warm all year round, between 20-30c. But this is of course the edge of the desert… so nights can get a little chilly. Dress for it. NO WIND? If the waves aren’t playing ball either, then there are plenty of other activities on offer, and most centers offer a wide variety of non-wind-based fun. Fishing, SUPing, a tour of Dakhla town or a desert excursion being just some of the options… Destination Guide

LATE NIGHT… Drink cocktails or beer with chilled music on the beach. On Friday and Sunday there is always a big party…
WHY CALABRIA The Calabria region of Italy is fantastic. From April until August the wind is around 17 knots every day. As well as the fantastic kiting conditions you can also expect fantastic Italian food and an exceptionally vibrant night life.
THE SEASON April-August: This is the best season for kiting with around 17 knots each day from around midday until 7pm. The air temperature is warm, around 20 degrees in April and May, 25 degrees in June, and 30 degrees in July and August. September – October: this period is good but with less predictable wind. Sometimes the Sirocco winds blow, and sometimes it’s the Mistrals.
THE SET UP
At Hang Loose there is a sandy beach with a clear launch. If you head off the front or downwind from Hang Loose Beach then you’ll find many kilometers of completely empty beach. At Hang Loose Beach there is a kite school, test center and a surf shop, as well as a beach club, kids area, restaurant, bar, disco and basketball and beach volleyball areas. Then there is also a camping area and a Volkswagen Village where you can pitch up right next to the beach.
NO WIND? SUPing, canoeing, sailing, snorkeling, fishing are all possible. You can also explore the Aeolian Islands by boat, check out the Sila Mountain, visit Pizzo and Tropea towns, or just stay at Hang Loose and practice basketball, skateboarding or beach volleyball. Destination Guide

GETTING THERE
Flights out of Europe will generally set you back around 1000 Euro, but shop around, especially if out of season.

LATE NIGHT… Cape Town is a vibrant spot, and each night you can take your pick of pubs, clubs, comedy, concerts and some amazing food options.
THE LOWDOWN Being a Southern Hemisphere destination, South Africa is a no-brainer for any ‘Northerners’ wishing to escape the chilly European winters (or summers for that matter). And Cape Town – with sublime winds and almost as many beaches as there are parties each night – is a pretty exciting place to shake off the winter blues…
If you’re looking for some real flatwater sessions, head for Shark’s Bay and Langebaan, about an hour and a half outside of Blouberg. And don’t let the name put you off… this is a really beautiful part of the Western Cape.
KITING SET UP Cape Town: Blouberg is your go-to spot if you’re fresh off the plane. Popular, and with easy access to plenty of other great spots, such as Big Bay, Dolphin Beach and Kite Beach. Big Bay is super popular with freestylers who make the most of the lulls between swells, and also has plenty of wave-action for the surf riders. Dolphin Beach is also a popular spot, and is great for beginners and intermediate riders. Then a little further on is Kite Beach, with its name leaving no guesses as to what is most popular here…
Atlantic Cape: approaching the Cape (an adventure in itself, with the amazing Chapman’s Peak Drive en route) means wind is in no short supply, nor are the pounding Antarctic swells that follow. Hit up Witsands for picturesque scenery and solid lines, while Scarborough is fast and fun, but not for the faint-of-heart or the inexperienced…

Eastern Cape: Warmer waters and gentler swells on the Indian Ocean side. Head to Muizenberg for freestyle fun in mellow waves. 39

WHEN IS BEST TO GO? It’s all about the main season in Cape Town if you want to rub shoulders with the pros and have the time of your life. Any time from mid-November through to mid-February and you’ll be in business. The rest of the year? Well that can be epic too. But don’t tell anyone… NO WIND? South Africa pretty much has it all should Mother Nature not play ball… LAND: Wine tours, climb Table Mountain, MBK or just hang out in town… SEA: Shark cage diving, seal snorkeling, freediving, surfing or SUP. AIR: Skydiving, paragliding, or smash out some airs in the Dirty Habits cable park… 40

GETTING THERE
Super easy from anywhere in the US, and most of the major European airports too. Airport shuttles to your resort of choice are often available, and you’ll find a wealth of options on Long Bay beach. THE LOWDOWN There’s a good reason that Turks and Caicos – and most notably the island of Providenciales – has become one of the most desired kiteboarding destinations on the planet of late. Cross onshore winds, almost no crowds, and plenty of square miles of perfect, shallow, clear waters. Just 1.5 hours from Miami and easily accessible from all over the US, the TCIs should definitely be high on your travel bucket list… KITING SET UP There are four main go-to spots. Long Bay is the biggy, on the south side of Providenciales. This beach is made for kiteboarding, and the main kite schools have all set up here, so it’s ideal for the learners amongst you. Grace Bay is generally for the more advanced rider, with deep water launches, strong northerlies, and there are waves to be Destination Guide

had on the reef or the sandbars. Leeward can be a fickle spot but when it’s on, it’s on! It’s a tidal spot so watch your six, but the heaven-sent flat-waters make it worth the risk. Five Cays is usually quiet, but it has great winds and shallow waters, and a choice little restaurant on the waterfront. WHEN IS BEST TO GO? Summer is from mid-June until the end of August, and these months can be some of the absolute best, with sunny conditions, consistent trade winds and warm waters. But at the end of August, the wind dies, and the season shudders to a halt for the next four months. The winter season then 44
kicks in from late November, and rolls on through to April. Stronger winds, more surf… bigger weather, but bigger rewards! NO WIND? Ever tried bonefishing? Well, when the wind dies, that’s just one of the many things you can give a whirl out here. Scuba diving is also about as good as it gets anywhere in the world, and then there are also options to snorkel, SUP, kayak, head out on a boat, jump on a horse, or take one of Big Blue’s ecotours to see places you never probably would otherwise…

Fly TAP or Cabo Verde Airlines with daily flights from all the main European/US capitals (some with a stop in Lisbon).
THE LOWDOWN Cape Verde is one of the most reliable kitesurfing holidays for a European winter. The windy season runs from November to May, with an average of 22 knots. It is six hours flight from most of the main European capitals, and Sal can count on 360 days of summer, with temperatures that go from 25 to 30 degrees, and clear blue waters. KITING SET UP Contrary to what many think, Sal is not a place for experienced riders only. On the contrary, it is the perfect place to initiate your kids and girlfriend/boyfriend into kitesurfing! Thanks to its particular geography, the island can offer perfect and massive waves with side offshore wind on one side, and flat and onshore conditions – perfect for learning – just five minutes drive on the opposite coast.

KITESURF HOLIDAYS
CAN YOU SUMMARIZE WHAT YOU DO? Sure! So we recently launched and we’re a booking platform which enables kitesurfers to easily plan their next dream holiday through matching up accommodation options in classic kitesurfing destinations with kite schools, equipment rental and kitesurf guiding. So you can basically get everything set up for your next trip. WHO IS BEHIND THE PROJECT AND WHY DID YOU THINK THERE WAS A MARKET FOR IT? We are a group of passionate kitesurfers from a variety of backgrounds. Over the course of our many trips away we became frustrated with trying to find suitable accommodation in a destination and to then try to find somewhere to hire equipment or to take a lesson. Often your first morning in a new spot would be spent hunting around. With kitesurfholidays.com not only do you have fantastic ‘kite friendly’ accommodation options but you can also easily find the perfect school or place to rent your equipment. With a sport like kitesurfing where a lot of people don’t want the hassle of traveling with all of their kit this makes the platform particularly relevant. SO ANYONE CAN LIST WITH YOU? That’s right. Accommodation providers are able to sign up to the platform in 20-25 minutes and can add photos as well as full details of room types, their facilities as well as details of local beaches, towns and bars. If they provide lessons or equipment hire then
54
they are also able to set these up as packages and become a one-stop-shop for booking a kitesurf holiday. If they only provide accommodation then they will automatically become linked with local kite schools to ensure that kitesurfers who book accommodation can then easily find lessons or equipment hire. Accommodation providers then have the option to have either ‘request’ or ‘live’ booking. Registration is similar for kite schools who can easily list details of their kitesurf course and their equipment hire options. AND FOR PEOPLE LOOKING FOR A HOLIDAY? For customers, the kitesurfholidays.com site is clean, easy to navigate, and has plenty of options in all of the main kitesurfing hubs internationally, places like Cape Town, Tarifa and Greece. You pay a deposit to lock in your trip and then pay the balance either a few weeks before you travel or on arrival. It’s kind of like Booking.com or AirBnB for kiting, but you can arrange your whole trip with lessons and hire if you require. SO WHERE CAN WE GO?! We currently have multiple options in over fifteen kiting hubs all over the planet. And we are growing all the time! If you are a provider just log on and register, if you are looking for a trip then kitesurfholidays.com should be your first stop!

It is the only government-licensed kitesurfing beach on the island and is properly organized into advanced and beginner zones for safety and for a smooth and enjoyable kitesurfing experience. Established in 2008, we are the first fully equipped kitesurfing center located on the beach in Cyprus. WHERE ARE MOST OF YOUR CLIENTS FROM? We have a fantastic mix of locals and visitors. Most coming from Europe, with the United Kingdom,

Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France being the main nationalities. Due to Cyprus’ location we get a lot of visitors from Israel and Russia too. HOW LONG HAVE YOU AND YOUR TEAM BEEN KITING? We have been into the sport of kiting since 2004. We decided to open up our school in 2008 because of its increasing popularity and because nothing like it existed in Cyprus. We have grown up in the sport, with the great experience of working through the progression of the equipment technology, safety procedures and evolution of kitesurfing styles and tricks. We have invaluable experience in the water due to the amount of history we have in the sport, and by traveling all over the world to experience different spots, oceans, seas and lakes. WHAT MAKES YOU SPECIAL COMPARED TO OTHER KITING BUSINESSES? Feedback from our visitors is always about how chill and welcoming the center is. It is not at all precocious or intimidating. We speak English, Greek, Russian and German fluently and our IKO and VDWS instructors are usually either Polish or Italian, so we have a great mix of culture and nationalities. We are super family friendly – there is a big shaded and sandy play area for the kids. We do not take a charge for using the facilities or the beach, we only ask you to support our bar which has great prices. A beer is only two euros! We also have regular events and downwinder rides that you can join in on! Destination Guide

CAN YOU TALK US THROUGH SOME SPECIAL MOMENTS FROM YOUR MOST RECENT TRIP/SEASON? A special moment from our last season was to see our returning clients: people that visit us every year and bring friends and family with them. Many people go on a kitesurfing holiday with only their kitesurfing buddies, but when they see the set up at Kahuna Surfhouse, they return the next year with their partners, kids and friends because we cater to everyone. We have a really fun introductory session for groups to get a taste of kitesurfing, so this is a great, no pressure, fun holiday activity. ANYTHING SPECIAL LINED UP FOR THE NEXT FEW MONTHS? Kahuna Surfhouse hosts the Cyprus Kitesurfing Championship called the King of Kite every July. This year will be our seventh competition. We have a pro kiteboarder over for the two day event to host and judge the competition. That is, a freestyle competition, a race, and a foilboard race. The pro kiteboarder crowns the King and Queen of Kite and we have a crazy awards ceremony. We have had Kevin Langeree, Hannah Whitely, Ruben Lenten, Lewis Crathern, Aaron Hadlow and Bruna Kajiya over so far. We get 800+ spectators over the weekend, an average of 60 racers and 25 freestylers competing. Competitors come from all over – England, Russia, Germany, Israel, Greece, Turkish Cypriot, Canada etc. Keep updated on our Facebook page and website. Anyone can take part in the race as long as they 62

can kite confidently upwind. It is a fantastic experience! AND WHY SHOULD OUR READERS CHOOSE TO SPEND THEIR HARD EARNED MONEY WITH YOU?! Cyprus is a hidden gem in the kitesurfing world. Kahuna Surfhouse is a quiet beach; a busy day means 20 kites in the water. The water is as warm as bath water; the sea goes from shallow to deep gradually making it easy to teach in and great for progression. We only have a very slight chop, no gust and steady thermal southwesterly winds. You can expect anything from a 16-25 knot average wind every day in the summer. There is no coral, no dangerous sea life, no shore break and no strong current. The perfect place to learn and the perfect place to progress. We are only 10 minutes drive away from the airport so you can kite right up to the minute you need to be at the airport! You will have a complete, well-rounded holiday with us – from the incomparable Cypriot cuisine, to the warm and welcoming vibe at Kahuna, you can go crazy in the nightlfe or take it easy. We have it all!

SICK DOG SURF
CAN YOU SUMMARIZE WHAT YOU DO? Sick Dog Surf organizes kitesurf trips in the Red Sea. We call it a Kite Safari: one week on a luxury yacht exploring the best lagoons and islands that Egypt has to offer. We kitesurf from dawn-till-dusk in perfect flat water and, thanks to stable and constant winds, we sleep, eat and chill on our boat. It is a very difference experience than going to kite in a kite school, we see more spots and it's definitely more intense: a great way to learn and to progress. WHERE ARE YOU BASED AND WHEN WERE YOU ESTABLISHED? We started in 2014 and we are based in Egypt. WHERE ARE MOST OF YOUR CLIENTS FROM? Europe, mostly English, Italians, Germans and Scandinavians. We have groups though from China and Asia as well, so we are getting pretty much international. HOW LONG HAVE YOU AND YOUR TEAM BEEN KITING? I started kiting in 2009, but some of our guys have been since as far back as 2004. WHAT ARE YOU DOING THAT MAKES YOU SPECIAL COMPARED TO OTHER KITING BUSINESSES? We feel we offer a unique kitesurfing experience… You live on a boat for a week and at any time you can pick you your kite and go. And when you want, you can get back on the boat. So this is literally a moving hotel, with all the comfort that a luxury

yacht can offer. And all this with the sunsets and the landscapes that only Egypt can offer, and traveling together with other kite enthusiasts. It's pretty fun! CAN YOU TALK US THROUGH YOUR MOST RECENT TRIP? We just had a group from Hong Kong that wanted something a little difference, and to experience diving and kiting in the same week. Most of them were experienced divers and kiters, while the remainder needed to learn from scratch one of the two disciplines. We arranged a new route to take in some of the best dive spots that Egypt can offer, together with our best kite spots for that week’s wind forecast. It was pretty intense and there was a lot of activity on board during the week days, but we made the most out of that week for sure! WHAT DO YOU HAVE LINED UP FOR THE NEXT FEW MONTHS? We will spend winter with our guests in Destination Guide
Cape Verde in our Surf house, collaborating with some pro riders to organize kite camps on the beautiful island of Sal. This way we are keeping fit for the summer season, where we have many more kite safaris lined up! WHY SHOULD OUR READERS CHOOSE TO SPEND THEIR HARD EARNED MONEY WITH YOU? A weekly kite safari offers perfect conditions both for learning kitesurfing from scratch and for improving your skill. Egypt is a windy country, and being in the middle of the Red Sea helps us to have even better winds (stronger and more stable). The lagoons and the sand banks are flat and wide and there is plenty of space for everyone, and we also do some downwinders. The boat is very comfortable and it's perfect to recharge your batteries between sessions. But it’s a lot of kitesurfing so you had better be ready…
