HISTORY ROBERT A. COOLEY RESIDENCE From the property placard: “A full - length front porch welcomed visitors to the clapboard home constructed on this lot in 1904. Robert and Edith Cooley purchased the residence from Golden Rule bookkeeper R. A. Black the following year. The couple had moved to Bozeman in 1899 after Robert, an entomologist , joined the college’s faculty... ...Over the years, this residence has evolved, with an addition built between 1912 and 1927 and major remodelling completed in 2008. “
RENOVATION 2007-2008 Narrative of the two year long renovation of the home by owner Ron Gompertz.
NARRATIVE The approach we took in the historic renovation is equally important and we rebuilt the 1904 house to bring it into the 21st century. We hope the “green renovation“ aspects of the house will be heavily emphasized.
“After its completion, we gave tours of the house to city officials, architecture students and interested parties to discuss all the energy efficient and sustainable building components used.”
The year long renovation from 2007 and 2008 was the first “extreme green” renovation of a historic home in Bozeman. We worked with Bozeman’s sustainability coordinator as well as the historic building staff. We created a website and blog - under the URL‘s BozemanHouse.com and BozemanGreen.com where we documented our research, the process and everything we learned as a tool for other builders. The website was active until 2015. It featured an extensive directory of local resources, suppliers and the companies we used in the rebuild / restoration / renovation. We spared no expense in the rebuild. After the purchase price of $520,000 in 2006 the restoration cost was $640,000. That including about ~$50k in extra cost to incorporate leadingedge energy efficiency technologies most of which won’t be visually obvious to anyone casually viewing the property.
