12

Cassandra Espinoza and Viannett Estrada warmed up their industrial courtyard wedding at Millwick in Los Angeles with a burgundy, pink and gold palette. To add romance, candles lit up the ceremony aisle and reception hall. The couple wore similar mermaid-style gowns with scalloped trains for the ceremony, before Viannett changed into a black tux for the celebration afterward.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Before you jump into the planning, take some time to really enjoy and reflect on your engagement—because this is a huge moment. You’ve found your person. And on the journey to find them, there was likely a slew of circumstances and chance that helped you navigate the almost eight billion people in this world and bring you two together. In other words, this is big. Now take a deep breath because the hardest part is over! What’s up next? Celebrating your unique love story with all of your friends and family. If you’re not sure where to begin (trust me, I’ve been there!) then you’ve come to the right place. These pages are chock-full of tips, tricks and advice for everything from finding your perfect wedding venue to deciding on accessories to match your style. And make sure to check out our Real Wedding stories. They’re a great place to find amazing vendors in your area, as well as local-specific ideas for food, décor and more. After you’re finished reading, download The Knot Wedding Planner app to make sure your planning stays on track. You’ve got this!

COMPLETE YOUR TEAM Book any outstanding pros like hairstylists, makeup artists, day-of transportation or a photo booth for your reception.

SHOP FOR RINGS Try on and purchase your wedding rings—then insure them. (Now it’s starting to feel really real, right?)

CHOOSE A POINT PERSON If you don’t have a wedding planner or day-of coordinator, task an attendant or family member to be the go-to so you can relax and enjoy the day.

DECIDE WHAT TO WEAR Shop for your attire and schedule necessary fittings—don’t forget accessories. Choose what your wedding party will wear too.

Organizing all those details and a checklist? There’s an app for that. The Knot Wedding Planner pulls together your vision, pros and guests to put planning in the palm of your hand.

PHOTOGRAPH BY YUNHEE KIM

F I N D Y O U R W E D D I N G S T Y L E We know—you’re probably figuring out where you should even start. We’ve got you covered. Once you download the app, the first thing you’ll do is swipe on images you love in our Style Quiz. It’s a fun way to help zero in on your vibe. Once complete, you’ll have your very own Wedding Vision (more on that on the next page). K E E P O R G A N I Z E D Not sure what to do when? No sweat—we’ve put together a checklist for you, and it’s totally customizable. So if Uncle Jeff is officiating, we’ll take “find an officiant” off your list. Plus, our budgeter will help you track your overall spending and how much you’ve put toward each detail. C O M P I L E Y O U R T E A M After sharing all your info (budget, location, guest count) we’ll help you assemble your squad. And if you want to keep scrolling, we’ve got thousands of award-winning pros (located right where you are), plus reviews, on The Knot Marketplace. M A N A G E Y O U R R E G I S T R Y Now for the fun part: your registries. Your people will want to shower you with gifts from “we’re engaged” to your wedding day, so keep your wish lists fully stocked right from your phone. Our universal registry tool lets you add items from anywhere you shop—so you don’t have to choose between bespoke pottery on Etsy and the latest smart home tech at Amazon. And if you’d rather ask for money to put toward things like your honeymoon flights or a home down payment, start a cash registry on The Knot. T H I N K O F Y O U R G U E S T S Your wedding website is going to be your new best friend. Fill it with need-to-know info, like hotels and your registries, then share it with guests. You can stay on top of RSVPs too. And don’t forget to have guests download The Guest—a photo sharing app that will sync all of their photos in one place (it’s like a free wedding album you can see in real time).

G E T Y O U R D A Y - O F T I M E L I N E As you check off to-dos (so satisfying, right?) the app creates a detailed day-of timeline. Share it with your pros, wedding party and VIPs. This way, everyone knows when it’s all going down, and you can focus on enjoying some champagne and having a blast with your people.

CREATE YOUR VISION All that swiping will leave you with tons of inspo, which you can add to anytime. Plus there’s room for personalized, #MakeTradition musthaves (think: late-night taco truck, dog-friendly ceremony space or room for a sangeet).

SHARE YOUR IDEAS When you’re ready, send your vision board to your fam and the people bringing your day to life. A series of images will help convey your idea of what a “romantic garden party” looks like.

20

DISCOVER YOUR STYLE No couple is just one set style—instead, you’ll get a series of words that describe your vibe. Bonus: You can use this lingo when talking with your pros.

PERFECT YOUR COLOR PALETTE Check out the colors that match your wedding style. And not to worry—you can always change them up as you plan.

GET PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS We’ll take your quiz answers and match you with vendors based on your location, style and budget—starting with your venue.

SAY “I DO” WITH EASE As you check off your to-dos, we’ll create a custom day-of timeline to help you pull off the main event.

MAKE TR ADITION THE FASHION

“We made a statement,” Charmaine says. She chose a white jumpsuit and sprays of baby’s breath, while Brandon rocked a blue suit.

THE COUPLE

Charmaine Vegas (40 and a jeweler) and Brandon Neddersen (34 and a planning manager) are Long Beach residents.

THE DETAILS “Our wedding had to exemplify us: unconventional

and intentional,” Charmaine says. With that in mind, “we made the day our own,” Brandon says. The couple planned a minimalist morning wedding with 11 guests at the Griffith Observatory. “The architecture of the building and where it sits, with the Hollywood sign and Los Angeles in view, is hard to beat,” Brandon says. Afterward, the couple headed to brunch at the 101 Coffee Shop.

Charmaine paired the wedding ring she designed with a ring from her late mom.

THE BRUNCH

Charmaine is a pancake lover, so it made sense for the pair to follow their a.m. vows with a fresh stack. “The coffee shop has a retro vibe we love,” Brandon says.

THE BLOOMS

“I spent my high school years in Hawaii, and that time was pivotal for me,” Charmaine says. “I wanted elements of Hawaii.” Charmaine carried tropical leaves, and the pair also wore ti leaf leis.

THE DETAILS

Twenty-five guests joined 24-year-old medical students Aubrey Perez and Michael Vega for a chilly waterfall ceremony, casual lunch and hot chocolate.

LOOKING BACK

“My favorite moment was when we walked up the aisle together as our family waved gold ribbons and blew bubbles,” Aubrey says. “It was perfection.”

LOCATION “When deciding

on a venue for our ceremony, we thought back to the feeling we had when we first went to Yosemite,” Aubrey says. She and Michael landed on Lower Yosemite Fall specifically because the spot had a paved path that led to the backdrop of the waterfall. “Nature has always allowed us to de-stress, disconnect from the world and reconnect with ourselves,” Aubrey says.

Right after the newlyweds walked down the aisle, they fed each other Blue Star Donuts.

SERENE SCENE

“We went with nature because it represents something pure, untouched and unedited,” Michael says. “That’s what we wanted our wedding to be: just Aubrey and me in a pure commitment.”

M A R Y C H A T M A N : A simple note on your wedding website and a small, concise sign advising guests that you’re having an unplugged wedding should suffice. Say something like, “We want our friends and family to be present at our ceremony, so we ask that you put away all cameras and cell phones. We’ve hired an amazing photographer, so don’t worry— this memory will be captured and we can’t wait to share the photos with you.” It gets the point across without cell phone shaming.

I’ve heard that, as the bride, I should get my hair and makeup done last so it’s the freshest. Is this true?

My partner’s father passed away and we’re hoping to find a few thoughtful (but not too heavy) ways to remember him on our day. Any suggestions?

B R I T T A N Y L O : Not necessarily. I actually always pick my bride as the first client for a few reasons. First, if you need your hair blown out and set for your hairstyle, then you want to be able to let it sit for the longest amount of time so it holds throughout the night. Additionally, the beginning of the day tends to be the most relaxing—it can get pretty chaotic as the morning goes on. From an emotional standpoint, you might be a bit calmer if you’re taken care of first rather than stressing that there may not be enough time for you to get ready. Plus, you’ll be able to chill before getting dressed and make sure you love your look before pictures begin.

A L Y S S A L O N G O B U C C O : Your wedding day is a celebration of you and your partner’s love, so it should be a celebration of the people you love too. Even if they’re no longer with you, their memory can be honored in incredibly special and meaningful ways. Think of how your partner’s father would have liked to commemorate you two had he been able to be there, and work that into the day. Did he always hit the dance floor when Earth, Wind & Fire came on? Play something by the band as the last song of the night. Was he a big fan of family pingpong tournaments? Set up a few tables for a showdown during cocktail hour in his honor. Giving a nod to a deceased loved one’s essence—and personality—is the greatest tribute of all. ››

ADVICE

Make a grand entrance with mom by escorting her down the aisle.

PLANNING

B R I T T N Y D R Y E : If space allows, having two aisles is a great way to showcase both parties equally with a dramatic meeting at the altar. If you go this route, make sure you have a photographer and a second shooter to capture both of your entrances and reactions. Another popular option is walking down the aisle together to symbolize unity. If you’re torn between the traditional and creating your own twist, why not combine the two? One of you can walk halfway down the aisle solo, where you can then meet in the middle and take your final steps to the altar together.

MAKE TRADITION

In the spirit of #MakeTradition, how can couples personalize their wedding day looks? B E C K Y M U R R A Y : Start with your favorite item. What’s your go-to accessory or signature addition when you dress for everyday life? If you feel your best in a bold lipstick, don’t feel the need to go nude and natural on your wedding day. If you’re known for rocking quirky socks in your nine-to-five, pick a new pair just for the occasion. Personalization is just that: personal. Wear what makes you feel the most “you” on your wedding day, not what you think you’re “supposed” to wear. #MakeTradition is all about being confident in the customs you inherited while staying true to what makes you unique.

FASHION

How much should my venue inform the style of my dress? M A R K I N G R A M : Aside from your own personal style, nothing influences your wedding fashion more than your venue. Obviously, an outdoor daytime garden wedding and a formal evening ballroom affair require very different looks. A clean and modern warehouse pairs well with a sleek sheath dress, while a detailed ball gown is perfect for a fairy-tale château. Let the venue be your guide and find a gown that will complement the setting.

@marigoldsf

The thing that’s most important to us as clients come to Marigold is that they feel welcome. We want the process to be fun for everyone involved, so we start by learning more about the couple, how they envision their wedding day from start to finish and their overall design aesthetic. We often find just as much design inspiration in the couple’s story as we do in the landscape or the venue itself. From there, we come up with a proposal, which serves as a guide throughout planning.

HOW MANY MONTHS IN ADVANCE SHOULD CLIENTS BOOK THEIR FLORAL DESIGNER? We’ll start working with clients as far out as one year, but we sometimes book smaller weddings with only a few months notice. It really depends on the location, venue, size and overall design vision.

HOW MUCH SHOULD COUPLES EXPECT TO SPEND ON FLOWERS? It comes down to size and scope. We see so many different approaches to flowers, from grand venue transformations to small, romantic elopements. For a typical California wedding, clients spend $10,000 to $15,000 on average.

HOW CAN COUPLES SAVE ON A BUDGET? If you’re looking to cut costs, a more minimal approach can go a long way. Using one varietal of flower clustered in a vessel—a single bloom or dried grass in a bud vase— can help you stick to a smaller budget. Also, flowers tend to cost less when they’re sourced locally and seasonally.

WHAT FLOWERS CAN CALIFORNIANS LOOK FOR LOCALLY? We’re lucky to live here because we have access to many different blooms throughout the year. In the summertime, you can find heirloom garden roses in wine country and the Central Coast. In the spring, sweet peas, foxglove, narcissus and ranunculus bloom in Healdsburg as well as Oakland. We get our dahlias from Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay during the late summer and fall.

HOW CAN COUPLES PERSONALIZE THEIR FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS? Working with flowers that have a particular meaning can instantly make an arrangement special. We also like to design with elements specific to the destination or the venue so they complement the surroundings.

HOW CAN COUPLES REPURPOSE FLOWERS FROM CEREMONY TO RECEPTION? Not all arrangements will work for different spaces. Some flowers have a short shelf life. We find that repurposing statement pieces for bars or other big moments works well.

WHAT FLOWER TRENDS ARE YOU PREDICTING? Color! Long gone are the days of ivory with a touch of blush.

D I S C OV E R TEAMHairand Makeup.com @teamhairand makeup

On average, couples book us anywhere from six months to a year in advance. From there, we schedule a hair or makeup trial around two to four months ahead of the wedding. That timing allows us to make sure your skin tone, hair length and texture will all be as close as possible for the day of. Trials can also be seen as tests, so take the opportunity to see if you click with both your artist and your look.

WHAT SHOULD COUPLES BRING TO THEIR FIRST TRIAL OR CONSULTATION? We absolutely love to see inspo photos of the hair and makeup clients like. With sites like Instagram and Pinterest, there’s no shortage of inspiration out there. I also like to view photos of the wedding flowers and attire in order to make sure we understand the client’s taste. For example, if a bride chooses a classic ball gown, she’ll probably feel her most beautiful in a swept-up hairstyle and glam makeup. Each client’s décor choices tell us a story about their tastes and what they like. One thing you shouldn’t bring: too many people. Ask yourself how many opinions you’re willing to hear. I suggest including only those people whose opinions you value highly.

WHAT SHOULD CALIFORNIA CLIENTS EXPECT TO SPEND ON WEDDING DAY GLAM? Rates may vary based on experience, but California couples can expect to spend $500 to $900 on average for hair and makeup, though this might not include a trial run.

GLAM ISN’T JUST A LADIES’ GAME: HOW CAN GROOMS GET SPIFFY TOO? Everyone wants to feel special! A clean shave, especially on-site in the privacy of a hotel room, is a luxury every groom should enjoy. Top that fresh look with concealer or translucent powder, and voilà!

WHAT WEDDING MAKEUP TRENDS ARE BIG RIGHT NOW, AND WHAT TRENDS ARE COMING THIS YEAR? Right now, most of our clients are asking for a natural, no-foundation-style look. If that’s what you’re looking for, I love the Kevyn Aucoin Etherealist Skin Illuminating Foundation. Beyond that, I’m seeing lots of simple, sweptup hairstyles. No curls, just full, textured hair. In the future, we’ll be seeing more and more color and details, particularly with eye makeup. Full, effortless styles that make guests wonder “did she or didn’t she get her hair done?” will be even more popular. I like that. Keep ’em guessing.

D O YOU

Give yourself a little buffer time in your schedule. Leave 30 to 60 extra minutes for lateness or indecisiveness.

Treat yourself to a gentle, exfoliating facial. Makeup looks best on clean, refreshed skin.

Don’t like something during the trial? Make it known and be particular. It’s fine to have multiple trials.

Above all, how you feel about your look on your wedding day is most important.

THEIR STORY It was only natural for Brianne (Bri) Kennedy (32 and an HR director) and Ryan Redfield (33 and a middle school science teacher) to say their vows on the beach. After all, it’s practically their backyard. “We picked a secret cove in our neighborhood that allowed just enough privacy,” Bri says. “We wanted it to feel local.” Afterward, the newlyweds welcomed guests to The Pearl Hotel, effectively transporting loved ones from beachfront bliss to a vintage surf party, complete with dancing, mai tais and Key lime pie. — LO U I S BAR AGO NA

CENTERPIECES Bri chose tropical blue and green bud vases for the tables, filling them with palm fronds and queen proteas. MENU Guests followed baconwrapped, blue-cheese-stuffed dates and rye whiskey mai tais with rosemary chicken, smashed Yukon Gold potatoes and grilled asparagus. CEREMONY Once Bri and Ryan staked out their spot in the cove, the only décor they needed was a Mexican blanket that they’ve had for years. A ukelele player strummed a cover of Tom Petty’s “American Girl” as Bri walked down the aisle—and ended up standing to the right. “At the time, I didn’t realize I was on the ‘wrong’ side, but it was necessary due to the layout of the beach,” she says.

RECEPTION Bri and Ryan embraced The Pearl’s mid-century modern feel, simply adding palm fronds, roses, dahlias and lilies to the tables. CAKE The tiered confection was a chocolate cake with chocolate mousse and cocoa bean brittle. CANNONBALL The couple made their grand “exit” by jumping into the hotel pool, with guests soon following. “That was our favorite moment,” Bri says. “It was the best seeing person after person work up the courage to jump in.”

Scottie and the couple’s ring bearer, Nashya’s nephew, rocked traditional brown batik garments, and Scottie used his skills to prepare a menu of classic Indonesian dishes. “We called it Indonesian desert-boho,” Nashya says. — LB

TABLE NUMBERS Nashya and a friend made the triangle-shaped wood blocks, while Scottie painted each one with a different desert-themed symbol, from coyotes to rolling hills of cacti. “We did DIY anywhere we could,” Nashya says. PLACE SETTINGS Not only did Nashya create the wood planters on the tables, but she also worked with her mom to fold each napkin atop the bamboo dinnerware and cut the colorful table runners with linens found in downtown LA.

SETTING Guests snacked on rendang, sate and nasi kuning as they looked out over the desert in the distance.

This is all about compromising and figuring out what’s going to make you and your partner the happiest. Once you have your list, move forward with booking those vendors first and spending your money accordingly.

selection, opt for a high-impact item, like a wow-worthy charger plate or patterned tablecloth. Anything else will likely go unnoticed by your guests and isn’t worth the up-charge.

GO FOR GREENERY It may sound harsh, but the best way to save money is to slim down your guest list. Each person you invite adds to your budget—you’re likely shelling out at least $100 per person between catering and entertainment—so compile your invites thoughtfully. Consider giving a plus-one only to couples that are engaged, married or living together. Then, if you still need to size down, put a few hard-and-fast rules in place, like “no coworkers.” The tighter you keep your count, the more money you’ll have to put toward other details, like a string quartet for the ceremony.

HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER This may seem counterintuitive, but hear us out. Spending up front on a knowledgeable wedding planner can pay off big time for your budget and your sanity. A skilled pro will help you navigate everything from vendor selections to contract negotiations, ensuring you’re spending smart throughout the process. Another bonus? They’ll have a handle on venues and services in your area, so they can help you score insider-only deals and achieve coveted looks for way less.

Good news—this piece of advice is totally on trend. Big blooms often up the price per arrangement, so stretch your floral budget by opting for a greenery-heavy look instead. Utilize a textural mix of greenery for larger moments at your wedding, like a hanging installation. Then, concentrate your flower usage to areas that will be center stage in photos, like your bridal bouquet.

OPT FOR A ROAMING DINNER If you’re hoping to save on catering, and a bare-bones buffet isn’t really your style, look no further than the roaming dinner. Basically an all-night cocktail hour, an up-and-at-’em dinner consisting of passed bites and serve-yourself stations is a fresh (and frugal) take on the traditional reception meal. You’ll save some money since there’s less waitstaff needed, and guests will get to mingle all night instead sitting down for a formal meal. Just make sure the variety (and amount) of food guests would expect of a traditional dinner is still there, with lots of options.

PLAY UP YOUR VENUE DÉCOR Choosing a party spot with good bones is a priority when looking to make the most of your money. Getting a great deal on a ballroom won’t matter if you have to then spend big to cover up ’80s wallpaper and flooring you hate. You want to make sure your chosen venue feels 85 percent of the way “there” without having to add anything extra. When touring potential locations, pay attention to things you can’t tweak easily (or without spending a fortune), like good lighting, an open space, inoffensive wall coverings and decent flooring. From that “blank” slate, you can then work with your vendors to come up with décor accents that fit the space’s characteristics (and your budget), instead of working hard to disguise them.

SKIP THE RENTALS Trust us, no one is going to remember whether you chose silver or gold flatware on your wedding day. When it comes to rentals, it’s best to work with what your venue has to offer. While it may be necessary to rent some items, when it comes to purely stylistic choices, avoid upgrading unnecessarily if your budget doesn’t have the wiggle room. If you must elevate your venue’s basic dinnerware

Stick with the tabletop items your venue has on hand to save big on rentals.

STYLE + PLANNING

It’s important that the photographer and the couple are on the same page about what they value in wedding pictures.

The photography industry can be complicated to navigate as a newly engaged couple, and hiring your wedding day photographer is arguably one of the biggest decisions you make throughout your entire planning journey. After all, this will be the person or team responsible for capturing all those emotional, tangible moments (not to mention all the beautiful details you’ve spent months planning) that will allow you to relive your day 10 or 20 years from now. Don’t stress—we’re here to help you out. We’ve rounded up our best advice to guide you in narrowing down your style and finding a true-to-you photography pro perfect for capturing every second of your unique celebration.

and contrast-y editorials of a favorite fashion blogger, then maybe you’ll want to seek out a photographer with a flair for the exaggerated and dramatic. By pairing your aesthetic choices (hint: you figured these out in step one) with the “vibe” you desire, you’ll end up with a photography blueprint that you can then easily articulate to potential pros to help explain your goals when it comes to your wedding pictures.

The first step to finding your dream photographer is a fun one (seriously!)—just go get inspired. Spend some time poring over any and every kind of imagery you love, such as sunny home décor shots, a fashion blogger’s Instagram feed or moody avantgarde French movie posters. Save each image that draws your eye as you go—then, once you have a good collection of inspiring photographs, take a step back and try to narrow in on what draws you to them specifically. Is it the soft pastel color palette? The offthe-cuff happy grins of the people in the picture? The interesting angles and perspectives? The more you familiarize yourself with what details you like, the easier it will be for you to eventually identify that same quality in a potential photographer’s portfolio.

DECIDE ON A “FEELING” Once you and your partner have figured out what inspires you image-wise, dig deeper and dissect what feels most authentic to your relationship and celebration, and how you envision your eventual wedding album looking. If you’re a timeless couple that has your heart set on formal, Vanity Fair-like family portraits, you may gravitate toward a more classic photography style. If a lot of your inspiration ended up being fly-on-the-wall images that bottle an authentic moment in time, then lifestyle photography may be the right choice for you. If you fell in love with the sharp

CaliforniaTKRSS20_Sect_11_(121_126).indd 122

DO YOUR RESEARCH Now’s the time to hit the web and find the pro who will bring your day to life. Browse The Knot Marketplace for photographers (and other vendors) in your area and price range, then peruse their portfolios and social media channels to identify if they’d be a good fit for your day. As you browse, ask yourself questions that are good indicators for a successful “match.” How do they capture the moments that are important to you? Have they shot in a venue similar to yours (bonus points if they’ve worked at your venue before)? Do they seem friendly and personable with their online audience? If available, check out reviews from past couples as well. Then, go ahead and send an introductory email with a bit of info about you and your soon-to-be spouse, your event (don’t forget to include your date!) and the vision for your day—you can even attach a few inspiration images you love from their portfolio, if you’d like. Once you’ve chatted about specifics (like whether their cal is even free to shoot your wedding), schedule some time to talk with them either on the phone or via video chat before signing on the dotted line so you can get to know each other on a personal and professional level. Why? You’ll be spending the most time with them on your wedding day, and you want to feel comfortable as they capture some of your and your family’s most emotional moments. ››

Ask about any additional fees that could add up too, like having to pay for your photographer’s travel and lodging. Finally, settle on an image delivery date and make sure it’s reflected in your contract so you know exactly when you can expect your shots.

PREP FOR THE DAY OF

124

FINESSE THE CONTRACT To get the most out of your photography investment, you’re going to want to make note of several important points when choosing your package and reviewing your contract. Most photographers offer a variety of services to suit their couples’ individual needs. This can include everything from day-of edits and digital proofs to adding a second shooter, scoring tangible prints and ordering a gorgeously assembled album. With all those options for customization, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and feel unsure about what you actually want or need. When you’re ready to make things official, present your chosen photographer with your budget and rough day-of timeline and get their opinion on the best package for you. The amount of time they spend at an event or the number of shots they provide you with may be flexible, so see if you can find a middle ground that works for both of you. Now is also the time to inquire about the cost of any add-ons you’re

Instead of putting together a detailed shot list for your photographer, pass along your final day-of timeline a few weeks ahead of your wedding and give them an idea of what images you’d like captured (like a picture with each bridesmaid or detail shots of the heirloom jewelry you’ll be wearing). Then, let them do their thing! As long as you’ve provided a schedule that you’ll (mostly) stick to, they’ll be able to budget for time spent on your details, dance floor and everything in between on their own accord. Ahead of the wedding is also the time to give them a heads-up on any familial or friendship intricacies they should be aware of, like divorced parents who may want separate family portraits, a grandmother that needs to remain seated for shots, or a groomsman and bridesmaid that don’t get along (hey, it happens). If you’re hoping to get your wedding published online or in a magazine, relay that to your photographer as well. This way, they’ll know to put a little extra emphasis on snapping shots of all your amazing details and will likely come armed with gorgeous styling accessories, like ribbons, linens and more—all with the goal of helping your wedding day aesthetic truly stand out.

BE RELAXED AND READY Guys, take a big deep breath with us now. You’ve put a lot of work into finding and working with the right photographer up until this point, so—like with all your pros—it’s time to put your total faith in them. In the week leading up to your wedding, reach out to re-confirm all the important details (like your venue location, day-of timeline and any surprises you’ve planned for your guests or partner) and answer any lingering questions they may have, then chill out. The only thing that’s left for you and your partner to do now is enjoy yourselves and go get hitched— your pros will happily take care of the rest.

KAMI OLAVARRIA PHOTOGRAPHY ABOUT THE EXPERT

HIRE THE BEST

HAVE A TRIAL RUN

TRUST YOUR PRO

KEEP IT TIMELESS

Kami Olavarria is a San Diego–based wedding photographer. Her style is rooted in journalism while also bringing lots of energy and direction to her couples on their wedding day.

Your photographer should extend beyond their obvious role to be your therapist, friend and storyteller. Find someone whose energy and vision is the perfect fit, and don’t settle.

An engagement shoot gives a couple and their photographer a chance to get to know each other. It’s good practice to see what you like and don’t like when being photographed.

Once you find a photographer that makes you feel comfortable and at ease, trust them! Don’t do too much research beforehand on poses. Just be in the moment.

I love that I’m seeing a movement away from trends and back to the root of storytelling. Let go of perfection or the production of wedding and capture it from a more authentic place.

BE TRUE TO YOU

CHOOSE WISELY

Brittany Renee, of Elite Makeup Designs, leads a stellar team of hair and makeup pros in Los Angeles, focusing on bridal beauty and editorial makeup application.

A professional artist knows how to execute hair and makeup with longevity in mind. We know which products have the best staying power and what photographs well.

Even if you just test out hair or makeup and not both, that’s okay. A trial is your chance to make sure you feel connected to your artist, and that will make your day less stressful overall.

Don’t go with hair or makeup that is super different from what you would normally do. For example, if you never wear red lipstick, your wedding day is not the time to try it out.

When gathering beauty inspo, try to be as specific as possible. Look for images that are similar to your skin tone and hair type so you know how the finished product will look on you.

Accessorize in Style Found your dress? Now it’s time for the fun part: adding accessories you love. Here, the comprehensive guide to pulling off a totally personalized look. BY SHELLEY BROWN

CaliforniaTKRSS20_Sect_14_(143_145).indd 143

CLASSIC Simplicity is key to nailing timeless bridal style. For sparkle that won’t clash with a classic gown, invest in understated jewelry like pearl drop earrings, diamond studs or a thin tennis bracelet you’ll want to wear long after your wedding day. To make a more dramatic statement, consider crystal-encrusted or pearl hair clips, or a long, sheer veil with lace edging that matches the fabric of your gown. Looking to infuse a pop of color into your streamlined ensemble? Give a nod to the “something blue” tradition with a pair of baby-blue heels or a sapphire pendant. Another thought: Pair a black-velvet sash with your dress. It’s a bold accessory that creates a sophisticated contrast and accentuates your waist.

FASHION + BEAUTY

10/22/19 8:35 AM

FASHION + BEAUTY Layer on lots of different bracelets for a cool, mismatched effect.

Give a nod to your outdoor surroundings with nature-inspired details in a stonewashed palette. Lush flower crowns with a mix of blooms or sprigs of baby’s breath are a great place to start. To add some sparkle to your ensemble, go for antique gold, rose gold or pewter jewelry embellished with raw gemstones or crystals. If you’re going all in, skip the fancy heels and opt for distressed boots in leather or suede. For fall or winter nuptials, keep warm with a faux-fur coat, denim jacket or textured knit wrap.

Saying “I do” with your toes in the sand? A seaside locale calls for effortless wedding attire and fun, colorful accessories. Freshwater pearls, tropical statement earrings, cowrie shell bracelets and delicate layered necklaces are right on trend. If you’re feeling bold, a straw hat decorated with local, fresh flowers makes for a cute photo. Where footwear is concerned, less is more. Forgo shoes altogether or swap out your heels for embellished sandals. If you want the added height of a heel without any of the fuss, white or metallic grosgrain wedges or platforms offer more stability on the sand than traditional stilettos or pumps.

ROMANTIC A touch more luxe than a rustic wedding, gauzy fabrics, floral embellishments and soft, pastel hues emphasize the dreamy feel of romantic nuptials. Whether you’re wearing a sexy, curve-skimming dress or a frothy, embellished ensemble, consider wearing a long, sheer veil for a dramatic detail that won’t distract. Or, channel your inner Renaissance heroine with a boho Juliet cap veil plus floral accents. Polish off your look with lots of whimsical jewelry (we love pieces that incorporate oversize flowers, butterflies and even bees), or focus on one statement piece, like a pair of ornate chandelier earrings.

VINTAGE This style can refer to a wide range of time periods, so first narrow down the feel you’re going for. Is it the sophistication of the ’50s or the glamour of the ’20s? If the former, a birdcage veil is a totally retro option and works with a variety of dresses. If you aren’t crazy about the idea of wearing a veil, hair combs and headbands with classic touches like lace or pearls also add polish to any hairstyle. To channel the glitz of the Roaring Twenties, opt for feathery and beaded headbands, art deco statement accessories and swinging fringe details. Vintage style also lends itself to old-fashioned jewelry. Repurpose your own family heirlooms or browse local estate sales and vintage stores to find special pieces with an antique vibe.

THEIR STORY Alexis Vanni (29 and an occupational therapy master’s student) and Mike Killam’s (30 and a lead technical recruiter) romance began with a spirited greeting: “ALOHAAAA.” “As soon as Mike said that, I knew I was in trouble,” Alexis says. “His gregarious energy captured my attention.” At their wedding, the couple combined their fun, silly spirit with boho pieces, including an “aloha” sign over the seating chart, a sunny color palette and tropical touches, a nod to that first hello. — LO U I S BAR AGO NA

WEIRDOS IN LOVE “We wanted the vibe to feel light and funny—very us,” Alexis says. As Mike said in his vows, “The first thing I fell for was your sense of humor—it is beyond weird, and matches mine perfectly.” Look no further than their signature sign, which read “Mutual Weirdness Forever.” CAKE The pair’s baker topped the soft ombré cake with peonies and roses, all in shades of pastel pink and ivory. For Alexis’s family of “cake people,” it was a must.

RECEPTION Alexis was particularly drawn to mustard when picking the day’s color palette, so the yellow shade played a starring role in the day, punctuated by pinks, peaches and white. Yellow goblets, deeper mustard runners and toffee-colored candles topped tables. SIGNATURE COCKTAILS Partygoers sipped the first date, a marg, the just Maui’d, a tropical cocktail, and Piper’s pick, named for Alexis and Mike’s pup. The couple also kept kombucha, their favorite, on tap.

THEIR STORY Amaya D’Amico (32 and an ad agency strategic director) and Gerard Pitpitan’s (33 and in consulting) wedding was a family affair. The couple wed on Amaya’s parents’ 39th wedding anniversary and her grandfather, mother and sister designed the invitations and place cards, which highlighted the roads the couple has driven on together and the songs they listened to along the way. The festivities also included the couple’s furry family members, Rex and Jolene, as a flower girl and a ring bearer. — CAITLYN MART YN

DÉCOR To play up the venue’s natural, rustic feel, the couple chose to keep the décor simple. “We added some string lights over the dance floor in front of the barn and on the trees to highlight their beauty well into the evening,” Amaya says. STYLE Gerard wanted to add a playful touch to his suit, so he added a pocket square with an embroidered dog. FLOWERS The nearby forest inspired the wild arrangements.

THEIR STORY San Francisco native Salima Taplin (32 and a food blogger) wanted a classic San Francisco wedding for her celebration with Matthew Jacobson (34 and a technology investor). “San Francisco City Hall is such an iconic part of my hometown,” she says. The couple honored Matthew’s heritage with a traditional Jewish wedding, while incorporating subtle Indian elements like henna on Salima’s hands, classic ghagra choli bridesmaid gowns and jute details on the stationery. A jute-bound book doubled as both invitations and a love story book that would become a keepsake for each guest. — CM

WEDDING PARTY Bridesmaids chose one of three custom-made, hand-dyed ghagra choli to pair with their own top. “We wanted to unify the wedding party, but also give an opportunity for people to have their own style and pull from their closet,” Salima says.

THEIR STORY For their intimate wedding weekend, Andrew Dennis (37 and a business intelligence analyst) and Darrell Cheng (40 and a head of UX/UI design and development) headed to one of their favorite getaways. “We love to visit wine country,” Darrell says. “It’s a place where we instantly knew everyone could have a good time eating, drinking and dancing.” The couple embraced the rich colors of St. Helena with their flowers, got cozy with guests under throw blankets and, of course, popped bottles. “Great wine and the outdoors made for a relaxed vibe,” Darrell says. — LB

STYLE For the most part, Andrew and Darrell took a laissez-faire approach to decorating the Farmstead. “We didn’t alter the décor too much” Darrell says. “Dinner on the lawn under bistro lights and hanging out by the bonfire were best for a crisp fall night.” Rustic wood vases of neutral roses and mums topped tables, and herb sprigs finished each place setting. FAVORS Guests took home corkscrews as a memento of their weekend partying in wine country.

THEIR STORY Meredith Carty (34 and a graphic designer and photographer) and Evan Sutherland (37 and a producer) invited guests on a trip to CartyLand, a festivalstyle celebration complete with VIP wristbands located in the invites. Guests watched the ceremony from blankets on the grass, then headed to the reception for face painting, a taco truck and slices of an ultra-colorful cake. “We wanted our loved ones to have a blast,” Meredith says. “The day reflected our story and adventures in a rainbow of colors.” — LB

FUN AHEAD Guests chose their own adventure when it came to the myriad of reception activities. Dancers could take the floor, while kids made crafts, took on the face-painting station or hopped into competitive kickball games. FIRST DANCE The newlyweds chose a mashup of two songs for their debut: first, they danced to “Saturday Love” by Cherrelle and Alexander O’Neal. Next, their two children joined them for “My Cherie Amour” by Stevie Wonder.

Stanley the giraffe is the sweetest mush, and we had so much fun with him,” Brianna says. “As Edem and I shared a kiss, Stanley felt a little left out and decided to join in—it was hilarious! The moment really spoke to our whole day: full of light, laughter and nature in our escape from the hustle of LA.”
