Where

New York Style

Meets

London Attitude The DC metro’s most-talked-about bridal salon brings class, style and unbeatable service, delivering a completely new bridal experience. Zoya and Amy are a mother-in-law/daughterin-law duo from New York and London, respectively, and they perfectly complement each other with their no-holds-barred honesty, on-point fashion knowledge and their impeccably stunning gowns—each handpicked for their beauty and uniqueness. Their core focus is to ensure that every bride and mother of the bride/groom has an abundance of choice regardless of their shape, size and budget. They are a one-stop shop for all bridal, special occasion and career attire. Their collection has rapidly expanded and now includes designers from the UK, US and the Middle East. Zoya’s 30 years of experience as a designer and stylist also raises her customer service to another level. “Our dresses are beautiful, classic and contemporary, but not every gown suits every bride. Our job is to work that little bit harder to not just find a dress, but find THE dress, and we love what we do.” Zoya’s Atelier opened in January 2017, and has quickly become the go-to place for the savvy bride and those looking for something truly unique for their special occasion. Along with their barrage of 5-star reviews, they have garnered a following of loyal customers worthy of a store that has been in business for decades.

Check out DC, Maryland and Virginia couples like Kelly and Zach, who turned their Bowie, Maryland, backyard into a colorful oasis. Initially set on a destination wedding, the couple knew they wanted a playful celebration. Hot-pink flowers and confetti cannons brought a quirky touch to the watercolor invites, menus and custom crest. Painted church-style window frames added structure to the outdoor space.

In other words, this is big. Now take a deep breath because the hardest part is over! What’s up next? Celebrating your unique love story with all of your friends and family. STAR SEARCH I’m a big believer in astrology, so if you can’t make a decision on your venue, let your sign be your guide. For all of the Sags out there (it me!), let your wanderlust take the lead and look into an exotic locale like Hawaii (p. 111).

3

HIRE YOUR TEAM Research and book pros—anyone you have to have should be locked in ASAP.

GATHER YOUR CREW Ask your besties to stand by you at the altar and in the months leading up to your day.

4

5 REGISTER + CREATE A WEBSITE TheKnot.com is the easiest place to do both! Then share the link so guests are in on the details, like room blocks.

8

20

PLAN THE CEREMONY Meet with your officiant to discuss the details and attend prewedding counseling if required.

9

COMPLETE YOUR TEAM Book any outstanding pros like hairstylists, makeup artists, day-of transportation or a photo booth for your reception.

SHOP FOR RINGS Try on and purchase your wedding rings—then insure them. (Now it’s starting to feel really real, right?)

CHOOSE A POINT PERSON If you don’t have a wedding planner or day-of coordinator, task an attendant or family member to be the go-to so you can relax and enjoy the day.

DECIDE WHAT TO WEAR Shop for your attire and schedule necessary fittings—don’t forget accessories. Choose what your wedding party will wear too.

6

7

DCMDVATKR20SS_(017-032).indd 20

NAIL DOWN THE BUDGET Envision your wedding and decide how much you want to spend (and who else will be contributing).

10

11

BUY YOUR WEDDING PAPER Select invites, thankyous and other stationery. If you place one order, you may snag a discount.

FINALIZE OTHER PARTY DETAILS Plan your rehearsal dinner, after-party and morning-after brunch.

GO FOR FITTINGS Have the final attire fittings and arrange for dress and/or suit pickup.

Organizing all those details and a checklist? There’s an app for that. The Knot Wedding Planner pulls together your vision, pros and guests to put planning in the palm of your hand.

22

PHOTOGRAPH BY YUNHEE KIM

F I N D Y O U R W E D D I N G S T Y L E We know—you’re probably figuring out where you should even start. We’ve got you covered. Once you download the app, the first thing you’ll do is swipe on images you love in our Style Quiz. It’s a fun way to help zero in on your vibe. Once complete, you’ll have your very own Wedding Vision (more on that on the next page). K E E P O R G A N I Z E D Not sure what to do when? No sweat—we’ve put together a checklist for you, and it’s totally customizable. So if Uncle Jeff is officiating, we’ll take “find an officiant” off your list. Plus, our budgeter will help you track your overall spending and how much you’ve put toward each detail. C O M P I L E Y O U R T E A M After sharing all your info (budget, location, guest count) we’ll help you assemble your squad. And if you want to keep scrolling, we’ve got thousands of award-winning pros (located right where you are), plus reviews, on The Knot Marketplace. M A N A G E Y O U R R E G I S T R Y Now for the fun part: your registries. Your people will want to shower you with gifts from “we’re engaged” to your wedding day, so keep your wish lists fully stocked right from your phone. Our universal registry tool lets you add items from anywhere you shop—so you don’t have to choose between bespoke pottery on Etsy and the latest smart home tech at Amazon. And if you’d rather ask for money to put toward things like your honeymoon flights or a home down payment, start a cash registry on The Knot. T H I N K O F Y O U R G U E S T S Your wedding website is going to be your new best friend. Fill it with need-to-know info, like hotels and your registries, then share it with guests. You can stay on top of RSVPs too. And don’t forget to have guests download The Guest—a photo sharing app that will sync all of their photos in one place (it’s like a free wedding album you can see in real time).

PROP STYLING: JULIE FLYNN AT HALLEY RESOURCES

Plan Your Wedding on Your Phone

G E T Y O U R D A Y - O F T I M E L I N E As you check off to-dos (so satisfying, right?) the app creates a detailed day-of timeline. Share it with your pros, wedding party and VIPs. This way, everyone knows when it’s all going down, and you can focus on enjoying some champagne and having a blast with your people.

Let’s get started on

YO U R W E D D I N G V I S I O N

CREATE YOUR VISION All that swiping will leave you with tons of inspo, which you can add to anytime. Plus there’s room for personalized, #MakeTradition musthaves (think: late-night taco truck, dog-friendly ceremony space or room for a sangeet).

SHARE YOUR IDEAS When you’re ready, send your vision board to your fam and the people bringing your day to life. A series of images will help convey your idea of what a “romantic garden party” looks like.

24

DISCOVER YOUR STYLE No couple is just one set style—instead, you’ll get a series of words that describe your vibe. Bonus: You can use this lingo when talking with your pros.

DETAILS “As a Maryland girl, I think there’s no better way to celebrate in the summer than to throw a crab feast,” Laura Kraisinger (26 and works for Amazon) says. She and Eric Shih (41 and works in business development at Teads) hosted their rehearsal dinner at The Crab Claw in St. Michaels, Maryland.

DINNER Coleslaw, potato salad, corn on the cob and hush puppies served buffet style were the perfect companions for crab. DÉCOR Cheery sunflowers complemented the restaurant’s red napkins, patterned tablecloths and instructional placemats. SOUVENIRS Guests took home crab mallets as favors.

SUNSET CRUISE

M A R Y C H A T M A N : A simple note on your wedding website and a small, concise sign advising guests that you’re having an unplugged wedding should suffice. Say something like, “We want our friends and family to be present at our ceremony, so we ask that you put away all cameras and cell phones. We’ve hired an amazing photographer, so don’t worry— this memory will be captured and we can’t wait to share the photos with you.” It gets the point across without cell phone shaming.

I’ve heard that, as the bride, I should get my hair and makeup done last so it’s the freshest. Is this true?

My partner’s father passed away and we’re hoping to find a few thoughtful (but not too heavy) ways to remember him on our day. Any suggestions?

B R I T T A N Y L O : Not necessarily. I actually always pick my bride as the first client for a few reasons. First, if you need your hair blown out and set for your hairstyle, then you want to be able to let it sit for the longest amount of time so it holds throughout the night. Additionally, the beginning of the day tends to be the most relaxing—it can get pretty chaotic as the morning goes on. From an emotional standpoint, you might be a bit calmer if you’re taken care of first rather than stressing that there may not be enough time for you to get ready. Plus, you’ll be able to chill before getting dressed and make sure you love your look before pictures begin.

A L Y S S A L O N G O B U C C O : Your wedding day is a celebration of you and your partner’s love, so it should be a celebration of the people you love too. Even if they’re no longer with you, their memory can be honored in incredibly special and meaningful ways. Think of how your partner’s father would have liked to commemorate you two had he been able to be there, and work that into the day. Did he always hit the dance floor when Earth, Wind & Fire came on? Play something by the band as the last song of the night. Was he a big fan of family pingpong tournaments? Set up a few tables for a showdown during cocktail hour in his honor. Giving a nod to a deceased loved one’s essence—and personality—is the greatest tribute of all. ››

ADVICE

Make a grand entrance with mom by escorting her down the aisle.

PLANNING

B R I T T N Y D R Y E : If space allows, having two aisles is a great way to showcase both parties equally with a dramatic meeting at the altar. If you go this route, make sure you have a photographer and a second shooter to capture both of your entrances and reactions. Another popular option is walking down the aisle together to symbolize unity. If you’re torn between the traditional and creating your own twist, why not combine the two? One of you can walk halfway down the aisle solo, where you can then meet in the middle and take your final steps to the altar together.

MAKE TRADITION

In the spirit of #MakeTradition, how can couples personalize their wedding day looks? B E C K Y M U R R A Y : Start with your favorite item. What’s your go-to accessory or signature addition when you dress for everyday life? If you feel your best in a bold lipstick, don’t feel the need to go nude and natural on your wedding day. If you’re known for rocking quirky socks in your nine-to-five, pick a new pair just for the occasion. Personalization is just that: personal. Wear what makes you feel the most “you” on your wedding day, not what you think you’re “supposed” to wear. #MakeTradition is all about being confident in the customs you inherited while staying true to what makes you unique.

FASHION

How much should my venue inform the style of my dress? M A R K I N G R A M : Aside from your own personal style, nothing influences your wedding fashion more than your venue. Obviously, an outdoor daytime garden wedding and a formal evening ballroom affair require very different looks. A clean and modern warehouse pairs well with a sleek sheath dress, while a detailed ball gown is perfect for a fairy-tale château. Let the venue be your guide and find a gown that will complement the setting.

“It was important to us to acknowledge our respective cultures,” John (right) says. “While researching Indian culture, I was gobsmacked by the beauty of traditional menswear. I was excited to wear the sherwani.”

TAILOR MADE “When it comes to my everyday style, I tend to lean masculine,” Jen says. “That said, I didn’t want a traditional black suit or tie for my wedding day. Purple struck me as feminine but different, and the flower necklace was the cherry on top. It totally stole the show.”

EXPERT ADVICE

ALL ABOUT

S TAT I O N E R Y WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION WHEN DESIGNING FOR A SPECIFIC COUPLE?

TO P T I P Claudia is big on color. Her advice: Treat a pop of color like a stylish accessory—even a lil’ extra can spice up your suite.

D I S C OV E R 50

Fig2Design.com @fig2design

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS COUPLES CAN MAKE INVITATIONS THEIR OWN? Think outside the box. There are so many different ways to personalize your suite. Why limit yourself to one specific type of paper or a one-dimensional piece? For example, I recently created a save-the-date made to be shaped into paper airplanes for a couple tying the knot at an airplane hangar. The paper spoke to their sense of adventure and their love of traveling together.

SPEAKING OF PAPER, WHAT PAPER OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE, AND HOW DO THEY DIFFER? I could write a novel on the subject of paper. It really depends on what you’re looking for. For more formal weddings, a nice double-thick (or even triple) cotton card is a beautiful option. For a more casual wedding or an event for which stationery isn’t as important to the couple, a standard smooth, uncoated stock will do. Specialty paper picks like vellum are always a nice touch, and they can help elevate or personalize a design.

ANY HELPFUL HACKS FOR COUPLES HOPING TO SAVE ON PAPER GOODS? Printing techniques tend to be the easiest way to save. These days, the most common printing type is flat printing, which tends to be more affordable. Letterpress is a bit pricier. Relatedly, using a calligrapher to hand address each envelope can add up, especially when a calligrapher charges by the line. To save a bit, give your designer the chance to come up with a mailing label that’s not as expensive but still feels creative or unique.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PAPER GOOD TO DESIGN? I absolutely love designing welcome booklets, especially for couples who are expecting a lot of out-of-town guests and have a whole wedding weekend planned. The hosts are probably way too busy to reply to a slew of texts about where to go for dinner or drinks, so why not put all of that info together into a handy little booklet instead? It’s fun and still makes guests feel as though they’re getting some extra time with the couple.

The key is getting to know them. I like to learn their style preferences, including their taste in clothes or home décor. One of my favorite steps in the process is hopping on a call with a couple and going through my questionnaire with them—fun fact: Couples are much more talkative on the phone than they are when filling out forms or answering questions online. Seriously. I once learned a couple had a pet hedgehog, all thanks to a phone call! Beyond direct communication, I love when clients send over images of things they liked online or share a Pinterest board. Once we’ve got that foundation, that’s when the juices start flowing.

THEIR STORY For Alyssa Omlie (30 and a show and events manager) and Jacquelyn Martin (31 and a director of sales) picking their wedding venue was a no-brainer. “We chose Jacquelyn’s parents’ house because it holds such significance to us and our relationship,” Alyssa says. “When we were long distance, the house was where I’d visit Jacquelyn.” From there, the couple focused on finding the middle ground between elegance and comfort. Flutes of bubbly welcomed guests to the party, hanging greenery struck a contrast to the modern metallics of the décor and at the ceremony, Jacquelyn rocked a black jumpsuit alongside Alyssa’s classic white dress. — LO U I S BAR AGO NA

RECEPTION Guests partied in a clear-top tent filled with chandeliers, black and white Chanel chairs and a matching checkered dance floor, all on the waterfront of the Wye River. TABLE NUMBERS Black acrylic table numbers struck a modern note next to deep red ranunculus, roses and peonies. STATIONERY The pair’s elegant paper paired their black, white and burgundy color palette with mixed fonts, from classic calligraphy to bold typeface.

FIRST DANCE After seeing Crywolf at a music festival, Alyssa and Jacquelyn knew they wanted “Runaway” to be their first dance. The Michael McHenry Tribe created a romantic remix of the song just for the newlyweds. CAKE The couple cut into a nearly naked cake with two layers of chocolate with strawberries and vanilla buttercream and a layer of chocolate with coffee buttercream. Guests also grabbed slices of two local faves: banana and coconut Smith Island cakes.

THEIR STORY Alison Bunnen (30 and a math teacher) and Cem Pence (29 and a data scientist) find inspiration in nature. Once the pair saw the tree-lined driveway and gardens of the Great Marsh Estate, they knew it’d be the ideal setting for their wedding. From there, the couple let nature lead the way when decorating, from the earth-tone color palette to the local wildflowers covering the ceremony arch. Alison and Cem took part in a treeplanting service, combining the soil from their home and their parents’ homes to grow a hawthorn tree. “It represented our families joining together as one,” Cem says. — LB

STATIONERY One of Alison’s favorite parts of wedding planning was choosing the stationery. “I was very picky and I had so many ideas,” she says. In the end, an illustration of the Great Marsh Estate’s facade coordinated well with the couple’s classic invitation suite. CAKE Because Alison has a food allergy, she baked their personal cake herself. “I made Cem and I our very own lemon cake with honey frosting,” she says. “Honey is our favorite flavor, so we loved it.”

THEIR STORY Though Lindsay Dubroff (29 and a graduate student) and John Carter “J.C.” Beese III (31 and a commercial real estate agent) chose to tie the knot at The Ritz-Carlton in Washington, DC, for the sake of convenience, their wedding didn’t quite feel like it was in the Capital City. Instead, it was important to the pair that their day felt as though it was happening in a whole different place and time. “The theme was based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Lindsay says. “Our ceremony felt like sitting in a garden.” Case in point: A pair of trees held up the couple’s chuppah during the interfaith service. — LB

RECEPTION After the ceremony, guests partied in a fairy-tale-esque secret garden. Mosses, vines, ferns, dahlias, orchids and peonies on the tables and hanging from the ceiling transformed the space. “When it came to the flowers, the colors were a free-for-all,” Lindsay says. “It had to be natural, like the flowers you’d see growing in a garden.” FASHION Lindsay finished her ceremony look with a cathedral-length veil, while J.C. topped his suit with a white dinner jacket. “I knew I wanted a summer wedding specifically so I could wear a white dinner jacket,” J.C. says. He also added a playful touch with a black-and-white polka-dot pocket square.

DANCE FLOOR Lindsay and J.C. accented the botanical reception décor with an illustrated dance floor to match the blue and white calligraphy design on their envelope liner. Guests got down on the festive floor with the help of The Free’s country-tinged jams. PLACE SETTINGS Bumblebee napkin rings and butterfly-print china completed each guest’s place, adding a whimsical note to the forest-like décor. Toile-patterned bread plates mirrored the design of the dance floor and stationery.

THEIR STORY Though Emma Lowenstein (32) works in event management and planning, she wanted her wedding to Drew Rudnick (35 and a named accounts manager) to feel like anything but work. “I’ve been to so many different venues in DC and I love my job, but this needed to be our own,” Emma says. In that spirit, fun and playfulness reigned supreme. Known for being full of ideas and creativity, Emma brought her colorful vision to life with bright, mid-century modern décor, popsicle-scented stamps on the invites and vows under a chuppah made of fabrics that belonged to her maternal grandma, held up by the couple’s friends. — LB

RECEPTION Emma and Drew brought vibrant color to industrial Dock 5 with jewel-tone goblets, bright yellow tablecloths and tropical-inspired greenery. “We transformed the space, which was a blank slate,” Emma says. BOTTOMS UP The pair read about the Southern superstition of burying bourbon a month prior to ensure ideal wedding day weather. “After all that work, we were willing to try anything,” Emma says. One small snag: They forgot where they’d buried the bottle, so their photographer gave them a hand. It was worth it—the sun came through.

THEIR STORY Louise Anena (29 and a human resources business partner) and Nomzana Augustin’s story (28 and a social impact program manager) began in Zimbabwe. “We both wanted to perform Usher’s ‘Yeah!’ in our middle school talent show,” Nomzana says. Years later, the pair reconnected after they serendipitously moved to DC from Africa. After their engagement, the couple welcomed loved ones from all over the globe to their new home for a modern celebration with gold details, clean geometrics and a marble-painted cake. Of course, there was also plenty of dancing—it’s how they met after all. — LB

Louise + Nomzana CENTERPIECES Tall arrangements of orchids and hydrangeas and floating candles added a little glam to the couple’s sleek, modern vibe, topping marble-printed gold and white tablecloths. “We really wanted a clean feel,” Louise says. TABLE NUMBERS Louise and Nomzana named tables after a few countries in Africa, from Uganda to Zambia. SECOND LOOK The newlyweds also paid tribute to their roots with Nomzana’s second look. THEIR STORY Sophia Chien (30 and a pharmacist) and Antony “Tony” Johnson (31 and a business development manager) planned their wedding with two very different color palettes in mind. “I really wanted a lot of white, gray and lavender,” Sophia says, “but I also wanted to honor my Chinese heritage, and in Chinese culture, red and gold symbolize good fortune and prosperity.” In that spirit, minimalist stationery, white hydrangeas and the couple’s classic Western looks fulfilled Sophia’s muted vision, while a red tea ceremony and colorful traditional outfits paid tribute to Sophia’s roots. — LB

THEIR STORY Rachel O’Connor (27 and an administrative legal assistant) embraced her green thumb when planning her wedding to Kevin O’Connor (29 and an IT technician). “If I had to name our theme, it’d be botanical brunch,” Rachel says. “For us, brunch means quality time with family and friends.” To keep things botanical, Rachel propagated greenery from some of her loved ones’ gardens, including cacti from her mom and pothos from her bosses. For sustainability, Rachel and Kevin chose emailed invites, and channeled their favorite meal of the day by offering guests a spread of omelets and paninis. — LB

THEIR STORY Physicians Ismaela Teferi and Simon Atena wrote their wedding as a love letter to their Ethiopian heritage—but with a few modern Western twists. The couple, who met during their time in residency, filled their wedding with nods to their culture, starting with the ceremony. “Our ceremony was spoken almost entirely in our Ethiopian dialect,” Ismaela says. At the reception, the newlyweds paired traditional Ethiopian dishes with romantic pink décor and a wispy, artistic cake for dessert. — LB

THEIR STORY Comfort is key for Iris Shin (29 and a property manager) and Scott Kim (30 and a technology officer)—and their wedding was no exception. The couple headed to Iris’s parents’ house in Potomac for a minimalist celebration with a heavy emphasis on their loved ones. “We invited our closest family and friends, threw up a tent and had a party,” Iris says. After wearing classic looks for the tree-lined ceremony, the newlyweds rang in their party by changing into traditional Korean hanboks. — LB

PRIORITIZE YOUR TOP MUST-HAVES

Before you write a single check, figure out how much you can afford to spend. That’s where we come in—with The Knot Wedding Planner app, we’ll help you settle on the right number for your celebration and offer suggestions for how much of that budget you should put toward each part of your wedding, from catering to cake. Plus, we’ll help you turn money to action with

When it comes to wedding planning, there’s no shame in playing favorites. Before you do too much research, sit down with your partner and make a list of each of your celebration priorities. The goal? This is all about compromising and figuring out what’s going to make you and your partner the happiest. Once you have your list, move forward with booking those vendors first and spending your money accordingly.

selection, opt for a high-impact item, like a wow-worthy charger plate or patterned tablecloth. Anything else will likely go unnoticed by your guests and isn’t worth the up-charge.

GO FOR GREENERY It may sound harsh, but the best way to save money is to slim down your guest list. Each person you invite adds to your budget—you’re likely shelling out at least $100 per person between catering and entertainment—so compile your invites thoughtfully. Consider giving a plus-one only to couples that are engaged, married or living together. Then, if you still need to size down, put a few hard-and-fast rules in place, like “no coworkers.” The tighter you keep your count, the more money you’ll have to put toward other details, like a string quartet for the ceremony.

HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER This may seem counterintuitive, but hear us out. Spending up front on a knowledgeable wedding planner can pay off big time for your budget and your sanity. A skilled pro will help you navigate everything from vendor selections to contract negotiations, ensuring you’re spending smart throughout the process. Another bonus? They’ll have a handle on venues and services in your area, so they can help you score insider-only deals and achieve coveted looks for way less.

Good news—this piece of advice is totally on trend. Big blooms often up the price per arrangement, so stretch your floral budget by opting for a greenery-heavy look instead. Utilize a textural mix of greenery for larger moments at your wedding, like a hanging installation. Then, concentrate your flower usage to areas that will be center stage in photos, like your bridal bouquet.

OPT FOR A ROAMING DINNER If you’re hoping to save on catering, and a bare-bones buffet isn’t really your style, look no further than the roaming dinner. Basically an all-night cocktail hour, an up-and-at-’em dinner consisting of passed bites and serve-yourself stations is a fresh (and frugal) take on the traditional reception meal. You’ll save some money since there’s less waitstaff needed, and guests will get to mingle all night instead sitting down for a formal meal. Just make sure the variety (and amount) of food guests would expect of a traditional dinner is still there, with lots of options.

PLAY UP YOUR VENUE DÉCOR Choosing a party spot with good bones is a priority when looking to make the most of your money. Getting a great deal on a ballroom won’t matter if you have to then spend big to cover up ’80s wallpaper and flooring you hate. You want to make sure your chosen venue feels 85 percent of the way “there” without having to add anything extra. When touring potential locations, pay attention to things you can’t tweak easily (or without spending a fortune), like good lighting, an open space, inoffensive wall coverings and decent flooring. From that “blank” slate, you can then work with your vendors to come up with décor accents that fit the space’s characteristics (and your budget), instead of working hard to disguise them.

SKIP THE RENTALS Trust us, no one is going to remember whether you chose silver or gold flatware on your wedding day. When it comes to rentals, it’s best to work with what your venue has to offer. While it may be necessary to rent some items, when it comes to purely stylistic choices, avoid upgrading unnecessarily if your budget doesn’t have the wiggle room. If you must elevate your venue’s basic dinnerware

Stick with the tabletop items your venue has on hand to save big on rentals.

The photography industry can be complicated to navigate as a newly engaged couple, and hiring your wedding day photographer is arguably one of the biggest decisions you make throughout your entire planning journey. After all, this will be the person or team responsible for capturing all those emotional, tangible moments (not to mention all the beautiful details you’ve spent months planning) that will allow you to relive your day 10 or 20 years from now. Don’t stress—we’re here to help you out. We’ve rounded up our best advice to guide you in narrowing down your style and finding a true-to-you photography pro perfect for capturing every second of your unique celebration.

and contrast-y editorials of a favorite fashion blogger, then maybe you’ll want to seek out a photographer with a flair for the exaggerated and dramatic. By pairing your aesthetic choices (hint: you figured these out in step one) with the “vibe” you desire, you’ll end up with a photography blueprint that you can then easily articulate to potential pros to help explain your goals when it comes to your wedding pictures.

The first step to finding your dream photographer is a fun one (seriously!)—just go get inspired. Spend some time poring over any and every kind of imagery you love, such as sunny home décor shots, a fashion blogger’s Instagram feed or moody avantgarde French movie posters. Save each image that draws your eye as you go—then, once you have a good collection of inspiring photographs, take a step back and try to narrow in on what draws you to them specifically. Is it the soft pastel color palette? The offthe-cuff happy grins of the people in the picture? The interesting angles and perspectives? The more you familiarize yourself with what details you like, the easier it will be for you to eventually identify that same quality in a potential photographer’s portfolio.

DECIDE ON A “FEELING” Once you and your partner have figured out what inspires you image-wise, dig deeper and dissect what feels most authentic to your relationship and celebration, and how you envision your eventual wedding album looking. If you’re a timeless couple that has your heart set on formal, Vanity Fair-like family portraits, you may gravitate toward a more classic photography style. If a lot of your inspiration ended up being fly-on-the-wall images that bottle an authentic moment in time, then lifestyle photography may be the right choice for you. If you fell in love with the sharp

DO YOUR RESEARCH Now’s the time to hit the web and find the pro who will bring your day to life. Browse The Knot Marketplace for photographers (and other vendors) in your area and price range, then peruse their portfolios and social media channels to identify if they’d be a good fit for your day. As you browse, ask yourself questions that are good indicators for a successful “match.” How do they capture the moments that are important to you? Have they shot in a venue similar to yours (bonus points if they’ve worked at your venue before)? Do they seem friendly and personable with their online audience? If available, check out reviews from past couples as well. Then, go ahead and send an introductory email with a bit of info about you and your soon-to-be spouse, your event (don’t forget to include your date!) and the vision for your day—you can even attach a few inspiration images you love from their portfolio, if you’d like. Once you’ve chatted about specifics (like whether their cal is even free to shoot your wedding), schedule some time to talk with them either on the phone or via video chat before signing on the dotted line so you can get to know each other on a personal and professional level. Why? You’ll be spending the most time with them on your wedding day, and you want to feel comfortable as they capture some of your and your family’s most emotional moments. ››

Tip: Skip the detailed shot list (they don’t need it!) and, instead, perfect your day-of timeline to pass off to your photographer. envisioning, like retouching services or an engagement session. Ask about any additional fees that could add up too, like having to pay for your photographer’s travel and lodging. Finally, settle on an image delivery date and make sure it’s reflected in your contract so you know exactly when you can expect your shots.

PREP FOR THE DAY OF

132

FINESSE THE CONTRACT To get the most out of your photography investment, you’re going to want to make note of several important points when choosing your package and reviewing your contract. Most photographers offer a variety of services to suit their couples’ individual needs. This can include everything from day-of edits and digital proofs to adding a second shooter, scoring tangible prints and ordering a gorgeously assembled album. With all those options for customization, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and feel unsure about what you actually want or need. When you’re ready to make things official, present your chosen photographer with your budget and rough day-of timeline and get their opinion on the best package for you. The amount of time they spend at an event or the number of shots they provide you with may be flexible, so see if you can find a middle ground that works for both of you. Now is also the time to inquire about the cost of any add-ons you’re

Instead of putting together a detailed shot list for your photographer, pass along your final day-of timeline a few weeks ahead of your wedding and give them an idea of what images you’d like captured (like a picture with each bridesmaid or detail shots of the heirloom jewelry you’ll be wearing). Then, let them do their thing! As long as you’ve provided a schedule that you’ll (mostly) stick to, they’ll be able to budget for time spent on your details, dance floor and everything in between on their own accord. Ahead of the wedding is also the time to give them a heads-up on any familial or friendship intricacies they should be aware of, like divorced parents who may want separate family portraits, a grandmother that needs to remain seated for shots, or a groomsman and bridesmaid that don’t get along (hey, it happens). If you’re hoping to get your wedding published online or in a magazine, relay that to your photographer as well. This way, they’ll know to put a little extra emphasis on snapping shots of all your amazing details and will likely come armed with gorgeous styling accessories, like ribbons, linens and more—all with the goal of helping your wedding day aesthetic truly stand out.

BE RELAXED AND READY Guys, take a big deep breath with us now. You’ve put a lot of work into finding and working with the right photographer up until this point, so—like with all your pros—it’s time to put your total faith in them. In the week leading up to your wedding, reach out to re-confirm all the important details (like your venue location, day-of timeline and any surprises you’ve planned for your guests or partner) and answer any lingering questions they may have, then chill out. The only thing that’s left for you and your partner to do now is enjoy yourselves and go get hitched— your pros will happily take care of the rest.

Shaun Malik is a fine art photojournalistic wedding photographer based in Virginia and Colorado. He focuses on creating classic and timeless work for his clients and couples.

Hiring the right wedding photographer is about finding someone whose work exemplifies what you envision for your day. Always ask to see full galleries to really get a feeling for a pro.

It’s so important to have an engagement session, even if you don’t need the photos. You’ll get to interact with your photographer, and it will make the wedding day feel more natural.

I always tell my couples to embrace the awkwardness. When in doubt, just do you and interact as you naturally would together. Those “awkward” moments can illicit joyful shots!

Opt for photos that are true to the actual environment and vibe of your day. You don’t want to look through photos 10 years from now and say, “What were we thinking?”

Accessorize in Style Found your dress? Now it’s time for the fun part: adding accessories you love. Here, the comprehensive guide to pulling off a totally personalized look. BY SHELLEY BROWN

DCMDVATKR20SS_(151-155).indd 153

CLASSIC Simplicity is key to nailing timeless bridal style. For sparkle that won’t clash with a classic gown, invest in understated jewelry like pearl drop earrings, diamond studs or a thin tennis bracelet you’ll want to wear long after your wedding day. To make a more dramatic statement, consider crystal-encrusted or pearl hair clips, or a long, sheer veil with lace edging that matches the fabric of your gown. Looking to infuse a pop of color into your streamlined ensemble? Give a nod to the “something blue” tradition with a pair of baby-blue heels or a sapphire pendant. Another thought: Pair a black-velvet sash with your dress. It’s a bold accessory that creates a sophisticated contrast and accentuates your waist.

FASHION + BEAUTY Layer on lots of different bracelets for a cool, mismatched effect.

RUSTIC

Saying “I do” with your toes in the sand? A seaside locale calls for effortless wedding attire and fun, colorful accessories. Freshwater pearls, tropical statement earrings, cowrie shell bracelets and delicate layered necklaces are right on trend. If you’re feeling bold, a straw hat decorated with local, fresh flowers makes for a cute photo. Where footwear is concerned, less is more. Forgo shoes altogether or swap out your heels for embellished sandals. If you want the added height of a heel without any of the fuss, white or metallic grosgrain wedges or platforms offer more stability on the sand than traditional stilettos or pumps.

Give a nod to your outdoor surroundings with nature-inspired details in a stonewashed palette. Lush flower crowns with a mix of blooms or sprigs of baby’s breath are a great place to start. To add some sparkle to your ensemble, go for antique gold, rose gold or pewter jewelry embellished with raw gemstones or crystals. If you’re going all in, skip the fancy heels and opt for distressed boots in leather or suede. For fall or winter nuptials, keep warm with a faux-fur coat, denim jacket or textured knit wrap.

An embellished back dripping in crystals makes for a seriously grand exit.

ROMANTIC

VINTAGE This style can refer to a wide range of time periods, so first narrow down the feel you’re going for. Is it the sophistication of the ’50s or the glamour of the ’20s? If the former, a birdcage veil is a totally retro option and works with a variety of dresses. If you aren’t crazy about the idea of wearing a veil, hair combs and headbands with classic touches like lace or pearls also add polish to any hairstyle. To channel the glitz of the Roaring Twenties, opt for feathery and beaded headbands, art deco statement accessories and swinging fringe details. Vintage style also lends itself to old-fashioned jewelry. Repurpose your own family heirlooms or browse local estate sales and vintage stores to find special pieces with an antique vibe.

155

GIELOW/MORNING WILD PHOTOGRAPHY; KATIE HOSS PHOTO; EVE GREENDALE PHOTOGRAPHY; KATIE HOSS PHOTO; JESSI CASARA PHOTOGRAPHY; LINDSEY PANTALEO

A touch more luxe than a rustic wedding, gauzy fabrics, floral embellishments and soft, pastel hues emphasize the dreamy feel of romantic nuptials. Whether you’re wearing a sexy, curve-skimming dress or a frothy, embellished ensemble, consider wearing a long, sheer veil for a dramatic detail that won’t distract. Or, channel your inner Renaissance heroine with a boho Juliet cap veil plus floral accents. Polish off your look with lots of whimsical jewelry (we love pieces that incorporate oversize flowers, butterflies and even bees), or focus on one statement piece, like a pair of ornate chandelier earrings.
