Zoe and Gemma wore modern white dresses with black details for their wedding at The Kimpton Brice Hotel in Savannah. “We encouraged guests to follow a Southern vintage theme but did something different ourselves,” they say. Case in point: a fanfavorite dessert. “We ate Leopold’s Ice Cream after dinner—a Savannah tradition—served from a cart outside,” the couple says.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Before you jump into the planning, take some time to really enjoy and reflect on your engagement—because this is a huge moment. You’ve found your person. And on the journey to find them, there was likely a slew of circumstances and chance that helped you navigate the almost eight billion people in this world and bring you two together. In other words, this is big. Now take a deep breath because the hardest part is over! What’s up next? Celebrating your unique love story with all of your friends and family. If you’re not sure where to begin (trust me, I’ve been there!) then you’ve come to the right place. These pages are chock-full of tips, tricks and advice for everything from finding your perfect wedding venue to deciding on accessories to match your style. And make sure to check out our Real Wedding stories. They’re a great place to find amazing vendors in your area, as well as local-specific ideas for food, décor and more. After you’re finished reading, download The Knot Wedding Planner app to make sure your planning stays on track. You’ve got this!

STAR SEARCH I’m a big believer in astrology, so if you can’t make a decision on your venue, let your sign be your guide. For all of the Sags out there (it me!), let your wanderlust take the lead and look into an exotic locale like Hawaii (p. 95).

• • ••

AND THE WINNER IS... If you’d like to jump-start a skin care routine or try a new makeup product, look no further than our Beauty Awards (p. 131).

• • •• • • •• •

TOP IT OFF

Accessories are an easy place to add a pop of personality. Even if it’s just for the reception (p. 149).

TOO PRETTY TO EAT How stunning is this handpainted cake? While these flowers are expertly crafted from sugar, you can get a similar look (and maximize your budget) by opting for real stems (p. 87).

SHOP FOR RINGS Try on and purchase your wedding rings—then insure them. (Now it’s starting to feel really real, right?)

CHOOSE A POINT PERSON If you don’t have a wedding planner or day-of coordinator, task an attendant or family member to be the go-to so you can relax and enjoy the day.

Organizing all those details and a checklist? There’s an app for that. The Knot Wedding Planner pulls together your vision, pros and guests to put planning in the palm of your hand.

22

PHOTOGRAPH BY YUNHEE KIM

F I N D Y O U R W E D D I N G S T Y L E We know—you’re probably figuring out where you should even start. We’ve got you covered. Once you download the app, the first thing you’ll do is swipe on images you love in our Style Quiz. It’s a fun way to help zero in on your vibe. Once complete, you’ll have your very own Wedding Vision (more on that on the next page). K E E P O R G A N I Z E D Not sure what to do when? No sweat—we’ve put together a checklist for you, and it’s totally customizable. So if Uncle Jeff is officiating, we’ll take “find an officiant” off your list. Plus, our budgeter will help you track your overall spending and how much you’ve put toward each detail. C O M P I L E Y O U R T E A M After sharing all your info (budget, location, guest count) we’ll help you assemble your squad. And if you want to keep scrolling, we’ve got thousands of award-winning pros (located right where you are), plus reviews, on The Knot Marketplace. M A N A G E Y O U R R E G I S T R Y Now for the fun part: your registries. Your people will want to shower you with gifts from “we’re engaged” to your wedding day, so keep your wish lists fully stocked right from your phone. Our universal registry tool lets you add items from anywhere you shop—so you don’t have to choose between bespoke pottery on Etsy and the latest smart home tech at Amazon. And if you’d rather ask for money to put toward things like your honeymoon flights or a home down payment, start a cash registry on The Knot. T H I N K O F Y O U R G U E S T S Your wedding website is going to be your new best friend. Fill it with need-to-know info, like hotels and your registries, then share it with guests. You can stay on top of RSVPs too. And don’t forget to have guests download The Guest—a photo sharing app that will sync all of their photos in one place (it’s like a free wedding album you can see in real time).

G E T Y O U R D A Y - O F T I M E L I N E As you check off to-dos (so satisfying, right?) the app creates a detailed day-of timeline. Share it with your pros, wedding party and VIPs. This way, everyone knows when it’s all going down, and you can focus on enjoying some champagne and having a blast with your people.

CREATE YOUR VISION All that swiping will leave you with tons of inspo, which you can add to anytime. Plus there’s room for personalized, #MakeTradition musthaves (think: late-night taco truck, dog-friendly ceremony space or room for a sangeet).

SHARE YOUR IDEAS When you’re ready, send your vision board to your fam and the people bringing your day to life. A series of images will help convey your idea of what a “romantic garden party” looks like.

24

DISCOVER YOUR STYLE No couple is just one set style—instead, you’ll get a series of words that describe your vibe. Bonus: You can use this lingo when talking with your pros.

PERFECT YOUR COLOR PALETTE Check out the colors that match your wedding style. And not to worry—you can always change them up as you plan.

GET PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS We’ll take your quiz answers and match you with vendors based on your location, style and budget—starting with your venue.

SAY “I DO” WITH EASE As you check off your to-dos, we’ll create a custom day-of timeline to help you pull off the main event.

M A R Y C H A T M A N : A simple note on your wedding website and a small, concise sign advising guests that you’re having an unplugged wedding should suffice. Say something like, “We want our friends and family to be present at our ceremony, so we ask that you put away all cameras and cell phones. We’ve hired an amazing photographer, so don’t worry— this memory will be captured and we can’t wait to share the photos with you.” It gets the point across without cell phone shaming.

I’ve heard that, as the bride, I should get my hair and makeup done last so it’s the freshest. Is this true?

My partner’s father passed away and we’re hoping to find a few thoughtful (but not too heavy) ways to remember him on our day. Any suggestions?

B R I T T A N Y L O : Not necessarily. I actually always pick my bride as the first client for a few reasons. First, if you need your hair blown out and set for your hairstyle, then you want to be able to let it sit for the longest amount of time so it holds throughout the night. Additionally, the beginning of the day tends to be the most relaxing—it can get pretty chaotic as the morning goes on. From an emotional standpoint, you might be a bit calmer if you’re taken care of first rather than stressing that there may not be enough time for you to get ready. Plus, you’ll be able to chill before getting dressed and make sure you love your look before pictures begin.

A L Y S S A L O N G O B U C C O : Your wedding day is a celebration of you and your partner’s love, so it should be a celebration of the people you love too. Even if they’re no longer with you, their memory can be honored in incredibly special and meaningful ways. Think of how your partner’s father would have liked to commemorate you two had he been able to be there, and work that into the day. Did he always hit the dance floor when Earth, Wind & Fire came on? Play something by the band as the last song of the night. Was he a big fan of family pingpong tournaments? Set up a few tables for a showdown during cocktail hour in his honor. Giving a nod to a deceased loved one’s essence—and personality—is the greatest tribute of all. ››

ADVICE

Make a grand entrance with mom by escorting her down the aisle.

PLANNING

B R I T T N Y D R Y E : If space allows, having two aisles is a great way to showcase both parties equally with a dramatic meeting at the altar. If you go this route, make sure you have a photographer and a second shooter to capture both of your entrances and reactions. Another popular option is walking down the aisle together to symbolize unity. If you’re torn between the traditional and creating your own twist, why not combine the two? One of you can walk halfway down the aisle solo, where you can then meet in the middle and take your final steps to the altar together.

MAKE TRADITION

In the spirit of #MakeTradition, how can couples personalize their wedding day looks? B E C K Y M U R R A Y : Start with your favorite item. What’s your go-to accessory or signature addition when you dress for everyday life? If you feel your best in a bold lipstick, don’t feel the need to go nude and natural on your wedding day. If you’re known for rocking quirky socks in your nine-to-five, pick a new pair just for the occasion. Personalization is just that: personal. Wear what makes you feel the most “you” on your wedding day, not what you think you’re “supposed” to wear. #MakeTradition is all about being confident in the customs you inherited while staying true to what makes you unique.

FASHION

How much should my venue inform the style of my dress? M A R K I N G R A M : Aside from your own personal style, nothing influences your wedding fashion more than your venue. Obviously, an outdoor daytime garden wedding and a formal evening ballroom affair require very different looks. A clean and modern warehouse pairs well with a sleek sheath dress, while a detailed ball gown is perfect for a fairy-tale château. Let the venue be your guide and find a gown that will complement the setting.

“It was important to us to acknowledge our respective cultures,” John (right) says. “While researching Indian culture, I was gobsmacked by the beauty of traditional menswear. I was excited to wear the sherwani.”

EXPERT ADVICE

ALL ABOUT

BEAUTY

WHAT SHOULD CLIENTS DO BEFORE BOOKING THEIR WEDDING MAKEUP ARTIST?

STYLE VIBE Kimaris, along with two other artists on her team, all go for glam that highlights natural beauty—and, of course, a good glow.

50

D I S C OV E R MakeupBy Kimaris.com @makeupbykimaris

WHEN SHOULD CLIENTS BOOK THEIR STYLIST OR GLAM SQUAD? It’s never too early. I recommend clients book their makeup artist at least six months before the wedding day to ensure they get who they want. It’s not at all uncommon for clients to book us a year in advance. Don’t hesitate to reach out early.

WHAT ARE SOME MISTAKES CLIENTS MAKE WHEN FIRMING UP HAIR AND MAKEUP? A lot of clients don’t wear this much makeup on an everyday basis, so they don’t always see the importance in weddingday glam. Usually, this leads to last-minute bookings and, sometimes, an artist who doesn’t understand your beauty vision. Keep in mind that there are going to be a ton of pictures taken on your wedding day, and photographers can capture every detail, including uneven skin tone or imperfections. Make sure you’re booking someone who wants you to both look and feel your best—and, yes, that can be done naturally to complement your individual beauty.

ANY BUDGET-SAVING HACKS WHEN IT COMES TO WEDDING DAY BEAUTY? Book a one-on-one appointment or lesson with a makeup artist and ask them plenty of questions. When you meet, this person can teach you how to do your makeup on the actual wedding day if an artist is out of your budget.

WHAT MAKEUP TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING NOW, AND WHICH ONES ARE YOU PREDICTING? Right now, I’m seeing a lot of colors reflecting the shades of the sea (think: mint green and pastel blue). This fall and winter, we’re going to see bolder lips in colors like ruby red and deep wine.

WHAT PRODUCT CAN’T YOU LIVE WITHOUT? I swear by the RCMA foundations. They really bring out that flawless, natural look. Pair that with lashes and a liquid lipstick, and you’ve got your essentials.

KIMARIS’S KIT Kimaris recommends glow-getters keep these four products on hand. L IQ U I D L I P ST I C K

EY E P RI MER

B ROW GEL

MATTE PRIME R

Kimaris’s beauty hack: using liquid lipstick as a primer for any lip products. Consider it a foundation for the lips.

All eyeshadows require a base. Not only does primer help shadows last, but also, it makes bright colors pop.

For a natural, polished look, brow gel is the key to keeping those brow hairs solidly in place.

Kimaris advises grooms to apply a matte or anti-shine primer on the wedding day in order to fight oily skin.

OUR PRO Kimaris Jones, the brains and beauty boss behind Makeup By Kimaris in Atlanta

I recommend they schedule a makeup trial a year before the wedding date. Remember: You may have to try several different artists until you find the one you love. The process can take months. As you search, bring along reference photos and inspirational images of looks you love. That will help the artist know which direction to go.

THEIR STORY Jocelyn Kuchta (29 and a physician assistant) and Bryan Murray (29 and an investment professional) mark their love in destinations. First, it was long distance with Jocelyn in Philly and Bryan in Seattle. After a stint in ATL and a West Coast proposal, the pair decided Georgia would be the best place for their wedding. “Lake Oconee has an enchanted forest feel,” Jocelyn says. Magnolias topped the stationery and greenery arches lined the aisle, all highlighting the weekend’s natural feel. — LO U I S BAR AGO NA

ESCORT CARD DISPLAY “We wanted something different, but it needed to include nature,” Jocelyn says. The solution: a tree complete with place cards attached to hanging ribbons for guests. RECEPTION Jocelyn and Bryan’s tented party combined the elegance of a ballroom, including chandeliers and jacquard linens, with nods to the rustic setting, including branches and eclectic rugs. “We wanted to use the tent and the barn,” Jocelyn says.

CAKE The newlyweds cut into a towering confection made of four different flavors: lemon-scented sponge with raspberry curd, chocolate devil’s food with chocolate filling, red velvet with cream cheese and spiced pecans and, finally, pistachio sponge. Just in case, baklava, tiramisu and cannoli were at the ready on the nearby dessert table. PLACE SETTINGS Sparkling gold chargers, flatware and monogrammed menus brought even more glam to the tables.

THEIR STORY Gabrielle Greaves (29 and a kindergarten teacher) and Vance Smith’s (30 and a young adults pastor) wedding planning journey was a collaborative effort. “Ashley Charron of Boxwood Bridal Co. gifted us a fully funded wedding, so we didn’t have to worry too much,” Gabrielle says. “I sent Ashley all my ideas and she coordinated everything—though I did get thumb-heavy in Pinterest.” In the end, the team designed the day with rustic details, nods to the couple’s strong sense of faith and chic neutral touches. Ashley capped off the night with a surprise: a boxing glove cake in honor of Vance’s fave sport. — LB

SWEETHEART TABLE The newlyweds sat down to a dinner of roasted lemon-rosemary chicken at a marble table trimmed with gold, one of many modern touches juxtaposed with rustic designs throughout the day. Windows behind them looked out on a view of the mountains. CAKE Gabrielle, Vance and their guests chose from a selection of five different cakes, including strawberry, Earl Grey lavender and a vanilla bean flavor with 24-karat gold icing.

MAKE TRADITION Cate personalized her sparkly Keds with lockets containing photos of her mom, who passed away when Cate was 12.

65

THEIR STORY Cate Lightburn (29 and a member support representative) and Jess Bryant (26 and an account manager) have marked their love around the ATL, from drinks and bites at Victory Sandwich Bar to shows at Aurora Theatre. That’s not only why Jess proposed with a city-wide scavenger hunt, but also why the pair looked at 15 venues before picking The Stave Room—and put the skyline on their stationery. “Finding the right spot was a challenge, but we needed to be married in Atlanta no matter what,” Jess says. — LB

LOUD AND PROUD Cate and Jess playfully expressed their pride with signage and paper goods. A proclamation of the gay agenda welcomed guests, and the ceremony programs instructed loved ones on how to celebrate at their first gay wedding. CAKE The pair offered guests a chocolate cake with blue vanilla buttercream icing, but Cate and Jess themselves preferred snacking on doughnuts. “We’ve always wanted doughnuts as our main dessert,” Jess says.

EXIT Bubbles not only served as a sweet send-off, but also made the most sense logistically when it came to exit options. “We struggled when picking our exit, but bubbles were the best idea for a few reasons,” Jess says. “It was simple, everyone could get involved and, most importantly, there were no drunk people around fire.” SWEETHEART TABLE Cate and Jess marked their spot with an ivory tablecloth and a bouquet of anemones, peonies and ranunculus.

THEIR STORY Leah Tran (36 and an art director) and Jason Hickey (33 and works in product marketing) know what they like—and exactly how to combine those things. “We’re black and white when it comes to our tastes, so planning was a breeze,” Leah says. Together, the pair traveled to their shared home of the South (Leah’s hometown of Atlanta, specifically) and mixed their love of boho aesthetics with modern touches. “We wanted a contrast of soft and bold,” Leah says. The pair filled the industrial King Plow with lots of organic greens and glitter as well as Vietnamese and Southern eats. — LB

One exit wasn’t quite enough for Leah and Jason to leave their mark. “Our sparklers were so long, we had to do a double take,” Leah says. “It felt silly at first, but then Jason twirled me around during our second lap, and we were so giddy.”

HASHTAG The pair put a clever spin on Jason’s last name with their wedding day hashtag, #LeahGotAHickey, and played up the fun phrasing with modern signage. CAKE Another example of the couple’s ability to mix two unlike things: their cake. Sugar roses finished the dessert’s grey exterior and layers of cheescake-sponge cake. DÉCOR Leah and Jason topped tables with metallic geometric lamps, greenery and votive candles in contrasting silver.

THEIR STORY Sarah Biggers (27 and the founder and CEO of Clove + Hallow) and Tucker Stewart (26 and an operations manager) do things their own way, and their wedding is proof of that. “We broke tradition in many ways,” Sarah says. “We called it our modern gothic bohemian fairy tale—what a mouthful.” From Sarah’s black diamond engagement ring and the matching moody color palette to the mix of traditions (Jewish for Sarah, Scottish for Tucker), the pair kept things personal. Even the cakes, one in black and the other in tartan, represented the pair’s two identities. — LB

DÉCOR Moody was the name of the game when it came to design. “We prefer a darker aesthetic,” Sarah says. “We focused on angular edges, candlelight and lush arrangements of greenery and roses.” CAKE Not only did the newlyweds grab slices from their two cakes, but they also satisfied their sweet tooth with mini doughnuts, cake pops and fondue. “Of course, we had to have the ultimate dessert of champions: champagne,” Sarah says.

GATKR20SS_Sect_05_(065_080).indd 78

EXIT Sarah and Tucker headed off amid a cloud of black smoke, set off with the help of their own smoke bombs. For an extra fun touch, Sarah topped her gown with a Viking hat. “I grabbed it from the photo booth and just wore it all night,” she says. NAME GAME A neon sign bearing the couple’s married name offset the dark, bohemian vibe of the candles and blooms. “Seeing that bright neon next to all of our greenery was particularly mesmerizing,” Sarah says.

CEREMONY Clare and Bradley tied the knot in the Roving Room at Habersham Mills, adding an asymmetric pampas grass arch. “The space is surrounded by nature and maybe a little haunted,” Bradley says. “We loved it.”

THEIR STORY Clare Looney (21 and works in campus ministry at SCAD) and Bradley Knudsen’s (24 and a coffee roaster) journey hasn’t exactly been an animated miniseries—but that’s exactly what they shaped their wedding after. “Our primary inspiration was our favorite show, Over the Garden Wall,” Clare says. “It’s a cozy yet macabre walk through an environment where nothing is as it seems.” For their celebration, this translated into crawling vines of ivy on Habersham Mills’s walls, earth tones, flower rings and vintage touches. — LB

CHEERS Clare and Bradley sipped cabernet sauvignon and Athens’s own Creature Comforts beer by candlelight as they took in the sights of the reception. “My favorite moment came once we finally sat down at our head table and overlooked the rows of our friends and family,” Clare says. “The sun went down, the room grew darker and I was struck by the beauty of it all.” CAKES Clare picked a strawberry cake with buttercream, while Bradley chose mocha with chocolate ganache.

This is all about compromising and figuring out what’s going to make you and your partner the happiest. Once you have your list, move forward with booking those vendors first and spending your money accordingly.

selection, opt for a high-impact item, like a wow-worthy charger plate or patterned tablecloth. Anything else will likely go unnoticed by your guests and isn’t worth the up-charge.

GO FOR GREENERY It may sound harsh, but the best way to save money is to slim down your guest list. Each person you invite adds to your budget—you’re likely shelling out at least $100 per person between catering and entertainment—so compile your invites thoughtfully. Consider giving a plus-one only to couples that are engaged, married or living together. Then, if you still need to size down, put a few hard-and-fast rules in place, like “no coworkers.” The tighter you keep your count, the more money you’ll have to put toward other details, like a string quartet for the ceremony.

HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER This may seem counterintuitive, but hear us out. Spending up front on a knowledgeable wedding planner can pay off big time for your budget and your sanity. A skilled pro will help you navigate everything from vendor selections to contract negotiations, ensuring you’re spending smart throughout the process. Another bonus? They’ll have a handle on venues and services in your area, so they can help you score insider-only deals and achieve coveted looks for way less.

Good news—this piece of advice is totally on trend. Big blooms often up the price per arrangement, so stretch your floral budget by opting for a greenery-heavy look instead. Utilize a textural mix of greenery for larger moments at your wedding, like a hanging installation. Then, concentrate your flower usage to areas that will be center stage in photos, like your bridal bouquet.

OPT FOR A ROAMING DINNER If you’re hoping to save on catering, and a bare-bones buffet isn’t really your style, look no further than the roaming dinner. Basically an all-night cocktail hour, an up-and-at-’em dinner consisting of passed bites and serve-yourself stations is a fresh (and frugal) take on the traditional reception meal. You’ll save some money since there’s less waitstaff needed, and guests will get to mingle all night instead sitting down for a formal meal. Just make sure the variety (and amount) of food guests would expect of a traditional dinner is still there, with lots of options.

PLAY UP YOUR VENUE DÉCOR Choosing a party spot with good bones is a priority when looking to make the most of your money. Getting a great deal on a ballroom won’t matter if you have to then spend big to cover up ’80s wallpaper and flooring you hate. You want to make sure your chosen venue feels 85 percent of the way “there” without having to add anything extra. When touring potential locations, pay attention to things you can’t tweak easily (or without spending a fortune), like good lighting, an open space, inoffensive wall coverings and decent flooring. From that “blank” slate, you can then work with your vendors to come up with décor accents that fit the space’s characteristics (and your budget), instead of working hard to disguise them.

SKIP THE RENTALS Trust us, no one is going to remember whether you chose silver or gold flatware on your wedding day. When it comes to rentals, it’s best to work with what your venue has to offer. While it may be necessary to rent some items, when it comes to purely stylistic choices, avoid upgrading unnecessarily if your budget doesn’t have the wiggle room. If you must elevate your venue’s basic dinnerware

Stick with the tabletop items your venue has on hand to save big on rentals.

It’s important that the photographer and the couple are on the same page about what they value in wedding pictures.

The photography industry can be complicated to navigate as a newly engaged couple, and hiring your wedding day photographer is arguably one of the biggest decisions you make throughout your entire planning journey. After all, this will be the person or team responsible for capturing all those emotional, tangible moments (not to mention all the beautiful details you’ve spent months planning) that will allow you to relive your day 10 or 20 years from now. Don’t stress—we’re here to help you out. We’ve rounded up our best advice to guide you in narrowing down your style and finding a true-to-you photography pro perfect for capturing every second of your unique celebration.

and contrast-y editorials of a favorite fashion blogger, then maybe you’ll want to seek out a photographer with a flair for the exaggerated and dramatic. By pairing your aesthetic choices (hint: you figured these out in step one) with the “vibe” you desire, you’ll end up with a photography blueprint that you can then easily articulate to potential pros to help explain your goals when it comes to your wedding pictures.

The first step to finding your dream photographer is a fun one (seriously!)—just go get inspired. Spend some time poring over any and every kind of imagery you love, such as sunny home décor shots, a fashion blogger’s Instagram feed or moody avantgarde French movie posters. Save each image that draws your eye as you go—then, once you have a good collection of inspiring photographs, take a step back and try to narrow in on what draws you to them specifically. Is it the soft pastel color palette? The offthe-cuff happy grins of the people in the picture? The interesting angles and perspectives? The more you familiarize yourself with what details you like, the easier it will be for you to eventually identify that same quality in a potential photographer’s portfolio.

DECIDE ON A “FEELING” Once you and your partner have figured out what inspires you image-wise, dig deeper and dissect what feels most authentic to your relationship and celebration, and how you envision your eventual wedding album looking. If you’re a timeless couple that has your heart set on formal, Vanity Fair-like family portraits, you may gravitate toward a more classic photography style. If a lot of your inspiration ended up being fly-on-the-wall images that bottle an authentic moment in time, then lifestyle photography may be the right choice for you. If you fell in love with the sharp

GATKR20SS_Sect_11_(113_118).indd 114

DO YOUR RESEARCH Now’s the time to hit the web and find the pro who will bring your day to life. Browse The Knot Marketplace for photographers (and other vendors) in your area and price range, then peruse their portfolios and social media channels to identify if they’d be a good fit for your day. As you browse, ask yourself questions that are good indicators for a successful “match.” How do they capture the moments that are important to you? Have they shot in a venue similar to yours (bonus points if they’ve worked at your venue before)? Do they seem friendly and personable with their online audience? If available, check out reviews from past couples as well. Then, go ahead and send an introductory email with a bit of info about you and your soon-to-be spouse, your event (don’t forget to include your date!) and the vision for your day—you can even attach a few inspiration images you love from their portfolio, if you’d like. Once you’ve chatted about specifics (like whether their cal is even free to shoot your wedding), schedule some time to talk with them either on the phone or via video chat before signing on the dotted line so you can get to know each other on a personal and professional level. Why? You’ll be spending the most time with them on your wedding day, and you want to feel comfortable as they capture some of your and your family’s most emotional moments. ››

Ask about any additional fees that could add up too, like having to pay for your photographer’s travel and lodging. Finally, settle on an image delivery date and make sure it’s reflected in your contract so you know exactly when you can expect your shots.

PREP FOR THE DAY OF

116

FINESSE THE CONTRACT To get the most out of your photography investment, you’re going to want to make note of several important points when choosing your package and reviewing your contract. Most photographers offer a variety of services to suit their couples’ individual needs. This can include everything from day-of edits and digital proofs to adding a second shooter, scoring tangible prints and ordering a gorgeously assembled album. With all those options for customization, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and feel unsure about what you actually want or need. When you’re ready to make things official, present your chosen photographer with your budget and rough day-of timeline and get their opinion on the best package for you. The amount of time they spend at an event or the number of shots they provide you with may be flexible, so see if you can find a middle ground that works for both of you. Now is also the time to inquire about the cost of any add-ons you’re

Instead of putting together a detailed shot list for your photographer, pass along your final day-of timeline a few weeks ahead of your wedding and give them an idea of what images you’d like captured (like a picture with each bridesmaid or detail shots of the heirloom jewelry you’ll be wearing). Then, let them do their thing! As long as you’ve provided a schedule that you’ll (mostly) stick to, they’ll be able to budget for time spent on your details, dance floor and everything in between on their own accord. Ahead of the wedding is also the time to give them a heads-up on any familial or friendship intricacies they should be aware of, like divorced parents who may want separate family portraits, a grandmother that needs to remain seated for shots, or a groomsman and bridesmaid that don’t get along (hey, it happens). If you’re hoping to get your wedding published online or in a magazine, relay that to your photographer as well. This way, they’ll know to put a little extra emphasis on snapping shots of all your amazing details and will likely come armed with gorgeous styling accessories, like ribbons, linens and more—all with the goal of helping your wedding day aesthetic truly stand out.

BE RELAXED AND READY Guys, take a big deep breath with us now. You’ve put a lot of work into finding and working with the right photographer up until this point, so—like with all your pros—it’s time to put your total faith in them. In the week leading up to your wedding, reach out to re-confirm all the important details (like your venue location, day-of timeline and any surprises you’ve planned for your guests or partner) and answer any lingering questions they may have, then chill out. The only thing that’s left for you and your partner to do now is enjoy yourselves and go get hitched— your pros will happily take care of the rest.

Christlyn and Erik Lee are the owners of Atlanta’s Lunalee Photography. They specialize in capturing the authentic moments of a wedding day.

Things like posing and editing are important, so make yourself very familiar with a pro’s work. Look over multiple galleries to be sure their shots are consistent and you like their style.

Your photographer will be there for very intimate moments, so look at them as a friend, not just a vendor. It’s a lot easier to be yourself when you’re with someone you trust.

If your pro offers an engagement session, take advantage of it. It’s a great way to get to know each other on a personal level and get comfortable in front of the camera.

To set yourselves up for the greatest chance of success, begin convos in a gentle manner, especially if they’re around an emotionally charged topic like money or each other’s family. Focus on how you’re feeling and what you need from your partner. Use a kind tone and sit down to chat so you can both focus your attention on the issue at hand. Try kicking it off with this: I feel ___________ when ___________ happens. I need ___________ from you.

NEWS FLASH: YOUR PARTNER CANNOT READ YOUR MIND. SORRY. The human desire to be “known” can often lead to the assumption that your partner can read your mind. Um, nope. Research shows that direct communication around both your needs (also known as emotional calls) is the key to a successful relationship. Literally, ask for what you need so your partner can acknowledge and meet that need. It’s that easy.

conflict GATKR20SS_Sect_13_(123_128).indd 124

THERE ARE ALWAYS TWO VALID REALITIES AT PLAY DURING A DISAGREEMENT. It’s easy to get caught up in a win-lose battle when it comes to arguments—naturally, you want to convince your partner of your viewpoint and win them over. But don’t overlook the fact that you’re on the same team and both of your opinions are valid. Focus on understanding their take on reality—you don’t have to agree, but try to find at least one part of it to validate.

OUR BRAINS ARE GOOD AT FORMING EXPECTATIONS FOR THE FUTURE BUT BAD AT KNOWING WHAT WILL REALLY MAKE US HAPPY You probably have expectations about what marriage will be like—trust us, we’ve been there. But putting that kind of pressure on your future can be a fast track to unhappiness. Instead, create healthy (and realistic) expectations for your marriage by talking through your dreams, visions and goals for the future with your partner from the start.

Ah, the C word. When handled correctly, it can actually strengthen your marriage. When two people partner up, they often neglect their own beliefs to “keep the peace.” But instead of going away, these beliefs surface as conflict. During a fight, try to understand your partner’s story beneath their argument.

Sure, those things can play a role, but they are not directly linked to A++ intimacy. Research instead touts two main factors: maintaining a strong emotional connection (that closeness will spill over into your sex life) and having conversations around your sexual preferences, which builds trust and satisfaction.

No matter how similar you may seem on paper, you and your partner have two completely unique inner worlds. Translation: You both boast distinct views, beliefs, dreams, interests, and ways of thinking and feeling. People in successful marriages make it a priority to continually grow in their knowledge and understanding of their partner’s inner world. Keep asking your partner questions and expressing a curiosity toward them. Allow room in your marriage for both of you to grow and change.

At some point, curiosity decreases and you can become complacent—it’s easy to assume you know everything about your partner.

YOU MARRY A PERSON— AND THEIR SET OF PROBLEMS. You and your partner will likely fight over the same issues repeatedly. Typically, they’ll focus on differences relating to your personalities or lifestyle choices. Our tip? Learn how to manage those conflicts, not resolve them. This means reaching an understanding about your differences, not a resolution. You’ll grow in empathy and emotional connection while respecting your differences.

of conflict in all marriages is about perpetual problems

NEVER ALWAYS WHEN USED DURING FIGHTS, THESE WORDS ARE HARMFUL

Let’s be honest: Disagreements are inevitable. And although it can be tempting to pull out the “You never...” or “You always...” in a heated argument, those phrases are not actually factual or helpful. Furthermore, they’ll likely put your partner immediately on the defensive, because the argument is no longer about the current incident but instead about their character. You’re essentially saying to them that they can’t get it right and will never change. Yikes. Decide together to make “never” and “always” off-limits in arguments. You’ll both be better off for it.

STYLE + PLANNING

Whether you want a dramatic tiered confection that steals the show at your reception or a simple buttercream style to cut off to the side, our guide to everything wedding cakes (the size, the shape, the frosting) has you covered.

126

B Y A LY S S A LO N G O B U C C O PHOTOGRAPHY BY YUNHEE KIM

NAIL YOUR WEDDING VIBE FIRST Ultimately, your cake should reflect the look and feel of your celebration— which is a bit hard to do if you haven’t planned any of it yet. Consider this our permission to move your confectionery to-dos a little bit lower on your list (you’ll ideally want to know your date, your venue and possibly details on your florals or attire before you sit down with your baker to plan your dream dessert). Once you’ve nailed down the bigger stuff, head to your cake consultation prepared with visuals or inspiration, like a swatch of lace from your dress or a picture of your invitations. HAVE A GENERAL BUDGET IN MIND Fun fact: Wedding cake is typically priced by the slice, and the cost can vary from $3 to $30 per piece and beyond, depending on what you choose. It’s easy to be wooed by fancy fillings or a multiflavored cake when you’re making decisions on a

sugar high, so get a handle on your budget ahead of your tasting to more easily prioritize your choices. Things like high-end flavors (blood orange or fig, anyone?), towering tiers and exterior upgrades (we get it, those handmade sugar flowers are super stunning) will all run up your tab quickly. Be candid with your baker about your likes and how much you’re looking to spend—they’ll have a money-saving solution so you can have your cake and eat it too. MATCH THE SIZE TO YOUR SPACE It may not be top of mind right now, but you should absolutely consider the size of your venue or reception space when designing your cake. The two should feel like they “belong” together—if your reception is in a grand ballroom, consider increasing the cake’s stature with tall and narrow tiers, or opting for a faux Styrofoam layer (no one will know!) to add height.

If you’re hosting a more intimate celebration (say, in a barn), a smaller confection will be a perfect match. Just make sure you size it right for your guest count too—a three-tier cake usually serves 50 to 100 people, while you’ll need around five tiers to serve 200 or more guests. Don’t worry—if you want to keep your cake small, you can serve up slices from a sheet cake in the kitchen. CHOOSE THE FLAVOR YOU WANT TO EAT Besides adding a bit of “wow” to your wedding, your cake should also taste amazing. When you meet with your baker, try out several flavors, and don’t feel beholden to traditional “crowd pleasers” like chocolate or vanilla—many bakers love creating their cakes with dynamic (and delicious) pairings, like lemon and raspberry or hazelnut and mocha. You’ll never please everyone, so focus on choosing a flavor you and your partner love. ››

S AV E YO U R S W E E T If you’re worried about not getting to eat the cake at your reception, ask a point person to set aside two pieces for you to enjoy after the reception. Then, save the top tier for a celebration soon after, like posthoneymoon—a whole year in the freezer can ruin it, so you’re better off getting a new version for your anniversary.

TO P I T OFF Not into traditional figurines? No worries! Complete your cake with one of these charming, unique topper ideas instead.

FUN FACT Originally, pieces of a wedding cake were saved to be eaten at the christening of a couple’s first-born child, not their one-year anniversary.

FUN FACT Most couples book their cake baker six months ahead of their wedding day.

A BIT OF NATURE

A CUTE QUOTE

Have your florist set aside a few food-safe blooms that complement your bouquet or centerpieces for your baker to pile on top of your cake. Flowers don’t jive with your vibe? Totally fine! You can still work the great outdoors onto your cake. Instead, choose something that suits your wedding style, like craft birch scraps for a rustic look or cleaned mussel shells for a nautical celebration.

Immortalize a favorite quote, vow verse, sentiment or song lyric (may we suggest “all you need is love?”) onto your cake with a creative and crafty topper. You can have a laseror die-cut phrase custom made from a material that complements your existing wedding décor, like wood, metal or a colorful acrylic sheet, or opt instead for a charming piece of fabric or rustic scroll of paper. Afterward, save it to frame or display as a thoughtful reminder of your wedding day. Sweet, right?

2 A FURRY TRIBUTE

Have a beloved fur baby that can’t join you at your celebration? Pay tribute to them by finishing off your cake with their likeness. We love the idea of custom-made ceramic figurines that look like your pup or kitten (Etsy is a great source for these!), or cardboard comic-book-style drawings of their face. Really want to go all out? Have your baker re-create them using edible fondant, instead.

4 A SWEET SHOT

For a playful take on the typical figurines, incorporate silly Polaroid snapshots of you and your love onto your cake. They can be from a recent adventure (like a favorite vacation) or pics you snapped that morning all fancied up in your wedding attire. Prop ’em atop your tier using place card holders.

11/7/19 1:35 PM

STYLE + PLANNING

or buttercream, which can all melt easily (yuck!). Either opt for fool-proof fondant, which holds up much better against heat and humidity, or work with your baker and venue to ensure there’s somewhere your cake can stay safe and cool right up until its big reveal. GET THE FACTS ON FROSTING Frosting is frosting, right? Not exactly. Turns out, there’s a lot to know about the sugary stuff coating the exterior of your cake. Buttercream (made using, you guessed it, butter and cream) is more inexpensive and often much more delicious, as it can be flavored with various extracts or fruits. But if you’re looking for a pristine, smooth finish or want an especially intricate exterior, consider having the cake frosted in buttercream first, then adding a layer of fondant over the entire confection for a polished finish. Whatever type of icing you choose, stick to colors your guests will want to eat. No one wants to be rocking black or purple teeth on the dance floor, so keep bold colors for fondant or as buttercream accents only.

128

CONSIDER THE FORECAST Be honest—you’re probably already stalking the weather app ahead of your day. In addition to considering the temps for things like your photos or flowers, you should also take the weather into account when choosing your cake. If you’re having an outdoor celebration in a hot climate, stay away from finicky finishes like whipped cream, meringue

BUDGET FOR THOSE EXTRA DETAILS When it comes to exterior upgrades, decorations can range in cost. The most inexpensive option is typically fresh fruit or real flowers—in most instances, they can be applied by your florist or baker on-site for a small fee. On the pricier side are things like sugar flowers, which are delicately constructed by hand in the weeks (or even months!) leading up to your wedding. The bottom line: All add-ons—including handpainting, textured exteriors, chocolate flowers and even specialty sprinkles— will increase the cost somewhat, so only work in what fits your budget (we think a little décor is worth the extra spend). HAVE A DETAILED DELIVERY PLAN Cake delivery takes skill and usually a refrigerated van, so you’re better off having yours delivered by your baker instead of picking it up yourself. Intricate cakes may not arrive in their final form, so build in time for on-site assembly, like the stacking of tiers or addition of finishing touches. Once your sweet arrives, make sure it has a designated storage place at the venue and a table or display at the reception where it can truly have its moment in the spotlight.

FRESH FINISH Try out one of these of-the-moment design trends for a standout cake.

3-D TEXTURES

PAINTED PATTERNS

SEMI-NAKED

Even basic white buttercream feels fresh when the focus is on texture. Get inspired by fabrics (like a cozy fisherman sweater) or finishes (like a concrete wall), then ask your baker to re-create that texture on your cake.

Delicate paintings (typically made on a fondant exterior using food coloring) can be pricey, but the payoff is big. Use them to mimic unique details, like the pattern on Grandma’s heirloom china, or your favorite Monet.

Totally naked cakes have had their time in the spotlight— now it’s their slightly dressed-up counterpart’s turn. With a sheer outer layer of frosting, a semi-naked cake strikes a balance between rustic and refined.

SPEAK UP

Melanie Sorrow is a hairstylist with over 20 years of experience. She has specialized in bridal hair since 2011 and is passionate about helping brides look and feel beautiful.

Hiring a hair or makeup professional takes the pressure off. There’s already a lot happening on your day, so you can relax knowing you have a trusted team to make you look your best.

Many of the hairstyle images on social media are done on wigs or using tons of extensions. Keep in mind: The style from the photo won’t necessarily look the exact same on you.

It’s a beauty myth that dirty hair is easier to style. If you usually wash your hair every day, then do that. Everyone’s hair is different, so do what works best for you.

Communication is key. When a bride is specific about what she likes and doesn’t like—but also gives me freedom to be creative within those boundaries—that’s when magic happens.

THE BASICS Start off by doing some research. In our (ahem) unbiased opinion, TheKnot.com is a great place to start— you can search thousands of dresses by color, fabric and style and find stores in your area that carry your faves. If you’re flipping through magazines or browsing Pinterest or Instagram, tear out pages and save or pin images to help zero in on what you like.

144

BEGIN BY BROWSING

ORDER THE DRES SES AT THE SAME TIME SO THEY COME FROM THE SAME DYE L O T. T H E N , S E N D AN EMAIL TO YOUR GIRLS DETAILING THE TIMELINE AND THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES. FOLLOW UP WITH THEM ABOUT A WEEK BEFORE THE DRESSES ARE DUE TO ARRIVE.

KEEP COSTS IN MIND If any of your friends have been in a wedding party before, they’ll know that bridesmaids pay for their own dresses. But a gentle reminder is never a bad idea. When it comes to price, try to be considerate of your friends’ lifestyles. If you’re concerned your wedding and the events surrounding it might be a financial burden for one or more of your bridesmaids, focus your search on more affordable dresses or select a color you like and let them pick their own style and price point.

FIND THE RIGHT FIT A bridesmaid dress is typically ordered using a person’s biggest measurements, so your friends will likely buy dresses at least a size or two larger than they normally wear. If a friend wants to buy a size smaller, let her know it’s easier to alter a bigger dress. In the same vein, don’t choose dresses from brands that don’t carry plus if your bridesmaids are not all straight size (0 to 14).

GATKR20SS_Sect_15_(143_148).indd 144

REA L TA LK

Your bridal party vision doesn’t have to be super rigid. For example, your bridesmaids don’t need to all wear the exact same dress for your wedding photos to turn out awesome. Your day is about celebrating and spending time with the people you love, so don’t get hung up on little details like forcing your friends to look matchy-matchy if it’s just not working for everyone.

EMMA CLEARY PHOTO & VIDEO

To ensure your bridesmaid dresses match your style, order your gown before making any decisions about them. Keep in mind: It takes two to three months for custom orders to arrive and an additional four to six weeks for alterations. A six-month cushion will give you and your friends ample time to find, order and tailor the dresses.

SHOP ACCORDINGLY Consider what kind of shopping experience will suit your personality best. If you tend to have strong opinions, it’s probably better to shop alone (or with just one friend or family member). If you prefer more input, take the whole gang and give them guidelines, like color or fabric. Then have them try on options and make a group decision.

A GUIDE TO COLOR

PICKING THE RIGHT PALETTE

There are several foolproof ways to pick the perfect color. One of the easiest methods is to play off of the color schemes of the venue and the season. For instance, if your wedding will be held at a rustic vineyard with burgundy décor in the middle of winter, you’ll probably want to rule out sunshineyellow dresses. Rich colors like emerald, eggplant and crimson work well in the fall and winter months, while lighter shades like sage green, lavender and blush are perfect for spring and summer. If you’re still at a loss for exactly which hue to choose, go for a general color (like blue) or color family (think: jewel tones) and let your bridesmaids pick their favorite shades from light to dark for a mismatched effect. Another thought: Toss tradition altogether and opt for chic, all-white dresses and jumpsuits in a variety of fabrics and styles.

Once you’ve chosen a dress shade you love, it’s time to figure out which accent colors work with it. Here’s what to pair with the hues of the moment:

SELECTING A SHADE

If your attendants have a diverse range of skin tones, think about choosing a universally flattering color. More muted colors like blush, gunmetal gray and dusty blue work on pretty much everyone and are also right on trend. Want an edgier feel? It’s hard to go wrong with pretty metallics like rose gold and champagne.

FINDING COMPLEMENTARY COLORS

To push the envelope even further, consider prints—floral-print bridesmaid dresses are hot right now. Just remember patterns work best in smaller parties and should be paired with simple accessories like monochromatic shoes and minimal jewelry. If you have a larger party of six or more, consider having your maid of honor wear a printed dress while your other attendants wear solid colors—it’s a fun way to give your MOH a shout-out while still maintaining a cohesive-looking group.

CHOOSING A PRINT

There’s a reason this light pink shade has staying power: It goes with a wide range of accent colors and is romantic without being frilly. Metallics like copper, rose gold and yellow gold pop against this stonewashed shade. For a softer palette, mix it with pastels like mint or natural tones like taupe.

BLUSH

A combination of mauve and pink, lilac has rustic associations. To play up its floral roots, pair lilac with lush shades of green (try sage, olive or hunter). Or go full-on Manic Pixie and opt for analogous colors like purple and pink.

LILAC

145

PRINTED SHIRT Patterned shirts will make even the most basic suit feel funky. You can’t go wrong with floral print, gingham or stripes.

|

RUBY This is what we call a power color. A rich shade of red, ruby can feel either earthy or regal, depending on how you work with it. For an instantly royal effect, consider an opulent accent color like gold. If you’re going for a more understated look, blush and beige create a pretty contrast.

One of the most versatile colors, this deep shade of blue jives with almost every wedding style and venue. Add red or hot-pink accents for a preppy feel, coral or lemon yellow for a more tropical vibe or lighter blues for a dreamy tone-on-tone palette.

NAVY

This color is pure sophistication. For formal nuptials, mix in glittery metallics like silver or pewter. For a more casual affair, try cooler blues or navy. The subtlety of gray also makes it ideal for experimenting with different textures like pleated chiffon, velvet or beaded embellishments. ››

ACCESSORY ADVICE Before you get into the fun stuff (hello, sparkly jewelry and shoes!), remind your girls to get the right undergarments. Depending on the type of dress (strapless, low back or one shoulder), your bridesmaids may need some special support. Trust us: The wrong bra can make even the fanciest dress look unflattering. Where more specific shapewear is concerned, let your friends call the shots. If they opt to wear a body shaper, that’s great. If they feel more comfortable without one, that’s also great.

It’s up to you whether you want head-to-toe wardrobe control, but we should warn you: By demanding that your friends wear certain footwear, you’re officially entering bridezilla territory. That said, there are occasions where the right shoes can make the outfit. A black cocktail dress paired with pink stilettos feels more flirty than classic. The same dress paired with jeweled sandals serves up black-tie glamour. If you want to win points with your bridesmaids, have them sport a style they already own. The next best thing? Pick a color and heel height and let them choose the style they feel most comfortable wearing. Lastly, before you send them shopping, specify if the wedding will be indoors. Stilettos make an outdoor photo session nearly impossible.

SIZING UP HER SHOES

If you’re buying your friends jewelry as a gift, give them a hint so they won’t splurge on any new pieces. Have a look in mind but want them to use their own jewels? Set guidelines by size and color. Small and subtle is a foolproof combo for jewelry, like studs and a pendant necklace. And let their dress color determine the metal: gold jewelry for warm tones, silver for cool shades, and diamonds and pearls for everything in between.

CLASSIC Simplicity is key to nailing timeless bridal style. For sparkle that won’t clash with a classic gown, invest in understated jewelry like pearl drop earrings, diamond studs or a thin tennis bracelet you’ll want to wear long after your wedding day. To make a more dramatic statement, consider crystal-encrusted or pearl hair clips, or a long, sheer veil with lace edging that matches the fabric of your gown. Looking to infuse a pop of color into your streamlined ensemble? Give a nod to the “something blue” tradition with a pair of baby-blue heels or a sapphire pendant. Another thought: Pair a black-velvet sash with your dress. It’s a bold accessory that creates a sophisticated contrast and accentuates your waist.

FASHION + BEAUTY Layer on lots of different bracelets for a cool, mismatched effect.

RUSTIC Give a nod to your outdoor surroundings with nature-inspired details in a stonewashed palette. Lush flower crowns with a mix of blooms or sprigs of baby’s breath are a great place to start. To add some sparkle to your ensemble, go for antique gold, rose gold or pewter jewelry embellished with raw gemstones or crystals. If you’re going all in, skip the fancy heels and opt for distressed boots in leather or suede. For fall or winter nuptials, keep warm with a faux-fur coat, denim jacket or textured knit wrap.

Saying “I do” with your toes in the sand? A seaside locale calls for effortless wedding attire and fun, colorful accessories. Freshwater pearls, tropical statement earrings, cowrie shell bracelets and delicate layered necklaces are right on trend. If you’re feeling bold, a straw hat decorated with local, fresh flowers makes for a cute photo. Where footwear is concerned, less is more. Forgo shoes altogether or swap out your heels for embellished sandals. If you want the added height of a heel without any of the fuss, white or metallic grosgrain wedges or platforms offer more stability on the sand than traditional stilettos or pumps.

ROMANTIC A touch more luxe than a rustic wedding, gauzy fabrics, floral embellishments and soft, pastel hues emphasize the dreamy feel of romantic nuptials. Whether you’re wearing a sexy, curve-skimming dress or a frothy, embellished ensemble, consider wearing a long, sheer veil for a dramatic detail that won’t distract. Or, channel your inner Renaissance heroine with a boho Juliet cap veil plus floral accents. Polish off your look with lots of whimsical jewelry (we love pieces that incorporate oversize flowers, butterflies and even bees), or focus on one statement piece, like a pair of ornate chandelier earrings.

152

VINTAGE This style can refer to a wide range of time periods, so first narrow down the feel you’re going for. Is it the sophistication of the ’50s or the glamour of the ’20s? If the former, a birdcage veil is a totally retro option and works with a variety of dresses. If you aren’t crazy about the idea of wearing a veil, hair combs and headbands with classic touches like lace or pearls also add polish to any hairstyle. To channel the glitz of the Roaring Twenties, opt for feathery and beaded headbands, art deco statement accessories and swinging fringe details. Vintage style also lends itself to old-fashioned jewelry. Repurpose your own family heirlooms or browse local estate sales and vintage stores to find special pieces with an antique vibe.

LAST LOOK

“My husband is Nigerian, so for the reception, we changed into traditional looks that honored his family,” Cristabel says. “I worked with Curtis’s mom and sister to design my dress, a modern take on the Nigerian garment, and we ordered the fabric straight from Nigeria. We love being immersed in each other’s culture.”
