Just as they finished planning their downtown Cleveland wedding, Erica and Sean found out that he had cancer. “As we went through treatment, we knew we wanted to make our wedding even more personal,” Erica says. Two surgeries later, Sean was declared cancer free in time for the wedding date. The couple’s modern ceremony at The Madison celebrated not only love, but life.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Before you jump into the planning, take some time to really enjoy and reflect on your engagement—because this is a huge moment. You’ve found your person. In other words, this is big. Now take a deep breath because the hardest part is over! What’s up next? Celebrating your unique love story with all of your friends and family. If you’re not sure where to begin (trust me, I’ve been there!) then you’ve come to the right place. These pages are chock-full of tips, tricks and advice for everything from finding your perfect wedding venue to deciding on accessories to match your style. And make sure to check out our Real Wedding stories. They’re a great place to find amazing vendors in your area, as well as local-specific ideas for food, décor and more. STAR SEARCH I’m a big believer in astrology, so if you can’t make a decision on your venue, let your sign be your guide. For all of the Sags out there (it me!), let your wanderlust take the lead and look into an exotic locale like Hawaii (p. 107).

AND THE WINNER IS... If you’d like to jump-start a skin care routine or try a new makeup product, look no further than our Beauty Awards (p. 177).

TOP IT OFF

Accessories are an easy place to add a pop of personality. Even if it’s just for the reception (p. 197).

HIRE YOUR TEAM Research and book pros—anyone you have to have should be locked in ASAP.

GATHER YOUR CREW Ask your besties to stand by you at the altar and in the months leading up to your day.

4

5 REGISTER + CREATE A WEBSITE TheKnot.com is the easiest place to do both! Then share the link so guests are in on the details, like room blocks.

9

COMPLETE YOUR TEAM Book any outstanding pros like hairstylists, makeup artists, day-of transportation or a photo booth for your reception.

SHOP FOR RINGS Try on and purchase your wedding rings—then insure them. (Now it’s starting to feel really real, right?)

CHOOSE A POINT PERSON If you don’t have a wedding planner or day-of coordinator, task an attendant or family member to be the go-to so you can relax and enjoy the day.

DECIDE WHAT TO WEAR Shop for your attire and schedule necessary fittings—don’t forget accessories. Choose what your wedding party will wear too.

6

Organizing all those details and a checklist? There’s an app for that. The Knot Wedding Planner pulls together your vision, pros and guests to put planning in the palm of your hand.

18

PHOTOGRAPH BY YUNHEE KIM

F I N D Y O U R W E D D I N G S T Y L E We know—you’re probably figuring out where you should even start. We’ve got you covered. Once you download the app, the first thing you’ll do is swipe on images you love in our Style Quiz. It’s a fun way to help zero in on your vibe. Once complete, you’ll have your very own Wedding Vision (more on that on the next page). K E E P O R G A N I Z E D Not sure what to do when? No sweat—we’ve put together a checklist for you, and it’s totally customizable. So if Uncle Jeff is officiating, we’ll take “find an officiant” off your list. Plus, our budgeter will help you track your overall spending and how much you’ve put toward each detail. C O M P I L E Y O U R T E A M After sharing all your info (budget, location, guest count) we’ll help you assemble your squad. And if you want to keep scrolling, we’ve got thousands of award-winning pros (located right where you are), plus reviews, on The Knot Marketplace. M A N A G E Y O U R R E G I S T R Y Now for the fun part: your registries. Your people will want to shower you with gifts from “we’re engaged” to your wedding day, so keep your wish lists fully stocked right from your phone. Our universal registry tool lets you add items from anywhere you shop—so you don’t have to choose between bespoke pottery on Etsy and the latest smart home tech at Amazon. And if you’d rather ask for money to put toward things like your honeymoon flights or a home down payment, start a cash registry on The Knot. T H I N K O F Y O U R G U E S T S Your wedding website is going to be your new best friend. Fill it with need-to-know info, like hotels and your registries, then share it with guests. You can stay on top of RSVPs too. And don’t forget to have guests download The Guest—a photo sharing app that will sync all of their photos in one place (it’s like a free wedding album you can see in real time).

CREATE YOUR VISION All that swiping will leave you with tons of inspo, which you can add to anytime. Plus there’s room for personalized, #MakeTradition musthaves (think: late-night taco truck, dog-friendly ceremony space or room for a sangeet).

SHARE YOUR IDEAS When you’re ready, send your vision board to your fam and the people bringing your day to life. A series of images will help convey your idea of what a “romantic garden party” looks like.

20

DISCOVER YOUR STYLE No couple is just one set style—instead, you’ll get a series of words that describe your vibe. Bonus: You can use this lingo when talking with your pros.

PERFECT YOUR COLOR PALETTE Check out the colors that match your wedding style. And not to worry—you can always change them up as you plan.

GET PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS We’ll take your quiz answers and match you with vendors based on your location, style and budget—starting with your venue.

SAY “I DO” WITH EASE As you check off your to-dos, we’ll create a custom day-of timeline to help you pull off the main event.

M A R Y C H A T M A N : A simple note on your wedding website and a small, concise sign advising guests that you’re having an unplugged wedding should suffice. Say something like, “We want our friends and family to be present at our ceremony, so we ask that you put away all cameras and cell phones. We’ve hired an amazing photographer, so don’t worry— this memory will be captured and we can’t wait to share the photos with you.” It gets the point across without cell phone shaming.

I’ve heard that, as the bride, I should get my hair and makeup done last so it’s the freshest. Is this true?

My partner’s father passed away and we’re hoping to find a few thoughtful (but not too heavy) ways to remember him on our day. Any suggestions?

B R I T T A N Y L O : Not necessarily. I actually always pick my bride as the first client for a few reasons. First, if you need your hair blown out and set for your hairstyle, then you want to be able to let it sit for the longest amount of time so it holds throughout the night. Additionally, the beginning of the day tends to be the most relaxing—it can get pretty chaotic as the morning goes on. From an emotional standpoint, you might be a bit calmer if you’re taken care of first rather than stressing that there may not be enough time for you to get ready. Plus, you’ll be able to chill before getting dressed and make sure you love your look before pictures begin.

A L Y S S A L O N G O B U C C O : Your wedding day is a celebration of you and your partner’s love, so it should be a celebration of the people you love too. Even if they’re no longer with you, their memory can be honored in incredibly special and meaningful ways. Think of how your partner’s father would have liked to commemorate you two had he been able to be there, and work that into the day. Did he always hit the dance floor when Earth, Wind & Fire came on? Play something by the band as the last song of the night. Was he a big fan of family pingpong tournaments? Set up a few tables for a showdown during cocktail hour in his honor. Giving a nod to a deceased loved one’s essence—and personality—is the greatest tribute of all. ››

ADVICE

Make a grand entrance with mom by escorting her down the aisle.

PLANNING

B R I T T N Y D R Y E : If space allows, having two aisles is a great way to showcase both parties equally with a dramatic meeting at the altar. If you go this route, make sure you have a photographer and a second shooter to capture both of your entrances and reactions. Another popular option is walking down the aisle together to symbolize unity. If you’re torn between the traditional and creating your own twist, why not combine the two? One of you can walk halfway down the aisle solo, where you can then meet in the middle and take your final steps to the altar together.

MAKE TRADITION

In the spirit of #MakeTradition, how can couples personalize their wedding day looks? B E C K Y M U R R A Y : Start with your favorite item. What’s your go-to accessory or signature addition when you dress for everyday life? If you feel your best in a bold lipstick, don’t feel the need to go nude and natural on your wedding day. If you’re known for rocking quirky socks in your nine-to-five, pick a new pair just for the occasion. Personalization is just that: personal. Wear what makes you feel the most “you” on your wedding day, not what you think you’re “supposed” to wear. #MakeTradition is all about being confident in the customs you inherited while staying true to what makes you unique.

FASHION

How much should my venue inform the style of my dress? M A R K I N G R A M : Aside from your own personal style, nothing influences your wedding fashion more than your venue. Obviously, an outdoor daytime garden wedding and a formal evening ballroom affair require very different looks. A clean and modern warehouse pairs well with a sleek sheath dress, while a detailed ball gown is perfect for a fairy-tale château. Let the venue be your guide and find a gown that will complement the setting.

FLOWERS HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD COUPLES BOOK THEIR FLORAL DESIGNER?

D I S C OV E R AndrewThomas Design.com

@andrewthomasdesign

WHAT CAN OHIO COUPLES EXPECT TO SPEND ON FLOWERS, AND HOW CAN THEY SAVE?

WHAT’S THE EASIEST WAY FOR COUPLES TO PERSONALIZE THEIR FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS?

Trick question! Some might have a wedding party of four, others of 24. Usually, I’ve found couples spend an average of around $10,000 to $15,000 for décor. If you’re looking to save, start with repurposing ceremony flowers. Also, for the reception, consider splitting the number of full centerpieces in half, swapping out expensive picks with more affordable ones.

Copying anything straight from Pinterest or Instagram can take away that sense of personalization, so I advise getting creative. Don’t be afraid to try something different or get conceptual, whether that’s with colors or floral pairings. Share your likes with your designer, ask questions and trust their imagination. Let your designer offer suggestions in creating something original to you as a couple. Remember, even dandelions can be beautiful when in bloom, so give the unexpected a chance. If you challenge yourself to come up with something personal, you just might end up starting a new trend of your very own.

WHAT FLOWER TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING NOW, AND WHAT ARE YOU PREDICTING FOR LATER IN 2020? Color is officially back! I’m seeing a lot of bright, textural color combinations for tables, and not just in one main centerpiece, but juxtaposed with classic garlands of greenery overhead. In the fall, I predict more pale yellows, apricots and burgundies paired with white and mustard accents. For winter, I think couples will go more refined by pairing paperwhites and garden roses with crystal accents.

BE HONEST: ANY FLOWER TRENDS OR COLOR COMBOS YOU JUST CAN’T STAND? Unless we’re signed up for a ’90s hip-hop themed party, I’m not fond of anything dyed, spray-painted or improperly colored. I don’t really love any flower trends that take away from nature’s beauty. I prefer to style nature and let that beauty speak organically for itself.

FROM LEFT: KRISTIN LEANNE PHOTOGRAPHY; BETHANY REAM PHOTOGRAPHY; LAUREN GABRIELLE PHOTOGRAPHY

OUR PRO Andrew Thomas Poulson, owner of Andrew Thomas Design in Wooster

It depends on the scale of their wedding or event. I’d recommend booking at least four months in advance if it’s just floral needs. That said, it’s ideal to have more time for largerscale events, especially if we’re working on anything custom. In that case, six to eight months is a much better time frame. Pro tip: Picking your venue before booking your floral designer is vital. Though venues may have preferred vendors they like to work with, some people pay to be on those lists and might not necessarily be a fit for you. Do a little research to make sure you choose someone you’re comfortable working with. Beyond that, knowing the specifics of the venue makes it easier for florists to envision the design and choose the flowers that will work best.

THEIR STORY Family was the focus of physicians Anodika Fatehchand (31) and Jerald Eckman’s (34) wedding. With paying tribute to their roots being top of mind, the pair planned a day-long celebration, starting with a Western-style wedding officiated by one of Jerald’s best friends during the day, followed by a traditional Sri Lankan ceremony to honor Anodika’s heritage. At the second ceremony, Anodika wore her mom’s original wedding sari, while Jerald rocked Indian attire to honor Anodika’s dad, who is Indian. “Seeing Anodika in her mom’s sari and the connection between them made me so happy,” Jerald says. — LO U I S BAR AGO NA

SIGNAGE Anodika and Jerald chose muted touches, like the minimal day-of paper with elegant calligraphy, for the sake of keeping the museum the main focus of the décor. “We wanted the venue to speak for itself,” Jerald says. BOUQUET Anodika carried a soft, neutral mix of roses, ranunculus and dahlias, but spiced things up with a pop of unexpected color: sprays of red astilbe.

DANCING A group of traditional Sri Lankan dancers marked Anodika and Jerald’s entrance and exit from the evening’s cultural ceremony. JEWELRY For the Sri Lankan ceremony, Anodika complemented her mom’s wedding sari with a gold atha mudu walalla, a hand ornament with rings. CEREMONY Guests witnessed as Anodika and Jerald completed a set of traditional vows under the cover of a gold poruwa decorated with white paper flowers and sparkling lights. “We rarely get to have all of our favorite people in one place at the same time, so it was amazing to share the happiest moment of our lives with everyone watching,” Jerald says.

CAKE The newlyweds sliced into a vanilla cake topped with roses. THEIR STORY Though Shawn Stierwalt (29 and a senior account manager) and Corey Calhoun (28 and a technical product manager) found inspiration in the romantic, structured gardens of France when wedding planning, substance topped style in the list of priorities. “More than anything, we wanted the day to be filled with meaningful moments,” Shawn says. Those moments included Corey’s cousin reading a poem written by his late grandpa, the pair memorizing their vows (which took daily practice) and taking a ride in a 1939 Pontiac for a little alone time. — LB

WELCOME PARTY Before tying the knot, Shawn and Corey showed outof-towners the thrill of Fifth Third Wheel. The pair chose a bold, bright theme for the party, a contrast to the airy color palette of their wedding. “We had an adultsonly reception, so the baseball game was a great opportunity to spend quality time with the little ones,” Shawn says. While looking back at photos, Shawn and Corey discovered nearly identical baseball pics—missing teeth included, so the throwback photos topped tables.

BRIDESMAIDS Shawn’s bridesmaids cheered her on in a mix of different soft-blue gowns. “I chose the fabric and the color, but let the girls choose their favorite style,” she says. “Frankly, I’m usually the one in need of fashion help. Picking specific outfits for my stylish, beautiful friends didn’t feel right—why start now?” WELCOME BAGS Shawn and Corey greeted loved ones with gifts representing some of their favorite things. Garrett Popcorn honored their current home of Chicago, and Shriver’s salt water taffy paid tribute to the Ocean City vacays of Corey’s childhood. Shawn’s mom made her legendary chocolate chip cookies, and Shawn worked with her to draft the welcome pamphlet, which detailed all of their favorite local hangouts.

THEIR STORY Ashley Southard (28 and a digital marketing specialist) and Michael “Mike” London (28 and a logistics coordinator) began wedding planning by figuring out just what they didn’t want. “It was a process of elimination,” Ashley says. “We didn’t want to be too formal or too neutral. That’s not us.” Instead, the couple channeled their personalities with fun fashion and splashes of color. Ashley designed the stationery, while Mike inspired the signature cocktail: the Philly Special, a whiskey drink named for his team, the Philadelphia Eagles. — LB

CAKE Not only did the couple offer guests slices of confetti cake topped with figs and berries, but Ashley and Mike also stacked their dessert table with tiramisu and crepe cake. Just in case that wasn’t quite enough, guests also chowed down on cinnamon rolls. CENTERPIECES Fresh fruit, including pears and plums, topped tables alongside bright greenery and gold votive candles. KETUBAH Ashley and Mike filled the day with Jewish tradition, including a ketubah signing.

THEIR STORY Accountants Brittany Danilov (29) and Lane Robilotto (29) honored age-old traditions at their wedding. Brittany is Serbian and prioritized her heritage when planning. “I wanted the same traditional Orthodox ceremony my parents had,” she says. “The more tradition, the better.” After (literally) tying the knot, a Serbian tamburitza band greeted the couple as they headed to the reception—a tented boho bash filled with wildflowers, hanging lanterns and Serbian beer. THEIR STORY Joey Lisle (above, right, 31 and an HR manager) and Scott Schwartz (33 and a pediatric dentist) value the journey as much as the destination. They met when Joey was visiting Cincy from Columbus. Though Scott wasn’t initially interested due to distance, he eventually gave in over dinner and drinks at Sotto. “Every weekend since then, we’ve been inseparable,” Joey says. “We shared our lives between Columbus and Cincinnati.” After lots of travel, they settled in Cincy for good and decided to tie the knot. THEIR STORY Columbus natives Meg Edison (25 and a librarian) and John Conlon (25 and a PhD student) took design inspo from their venue when planning all the way from Boston, their current residence. “Our color palette was inspired by the Audubon Center and sunset colors,” Meg says. “We even called our favorite shade of orange ‘Audubon orange.’ ” Most of all, though, the couple planned a day full of fun, from the palette to the tables, which they dressed with Meg’s dad’s pottery collection, and the reception dinner, which boasted a mashed potato bar. — LB

STATIONERY When it came to executing her vision of autumntoned invitations, Meg had the ultimate ally on her side: her mom. “My mom is a graphic designer, so she created all of our stationery,” Meg says. “I felt lucky to have her.” John, Meg and her mom conspired to play up the unique rotational symmetry of their wedding date, 6.1.19, and its resemblance to “Ohio” when blind embossed on paper. BOUQUETS Meg and her bridesmaids carried a mix of rust-colored flowers, including roses, ranunculus and orchids.

THEIR STORY For their wedding, University of Dayton grads Vanessa Kessel (26 and an elementary school teacher) and Zack Valigosky (27 and an energy engineer) headed back to their old stomping grounds for a celebration that mixed the modern with the romantic. “I couldn’t just have a two-tone color palette,” Vanessa says. When it comes to wedding planning, there’s no shame in playing favorites. Before you do too much research, sit down with your partner and make a list of each of your celebration priorities. The goal? This is all about compromising and figuring out what’s going to make you and your partner the happiest. Once you have your list, move forward with booking those vendors first and spending your money accordingly.

selection, opt for a high-impact item, like a wow-worthy charger plate or patterned tablecloth. Anything else will likely go unnoticed by your guests and isn’t worth the up-charge.

GO FOR GREENERY It may sound harsh, but the best way to save money is to slim down your guest list. Each person you invite adds to your budget—you’re likely shelling out at least $100 per person between catering and entertainment—so compile your invites thoughtfully. Consider giving a plus-one only to couples that are engaged, married or living together. Then, if you still need to size down, put a few hard-and-fast rules in place, like “no coworkers.” The tighter you keep your count, the more money you’ll have to put toward other details, like a string quartet for the ceremony.

HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER This may seem counterintuitive, but hear us out. Spending up front on a knowledgeable wedding planner can pay off big time for your budget and your sanity. A skilled pro will help you navigate everything from vendor selections to contract negotiations, ensuring you’re spending smart throughout the process. Another bonus? They’ll have a handle on venues and services in your area, so they can help you score insider-only deals and achieve coveted looks for way less.

Good news—this piece of advice is totally on trend. Big blooms often up the price per arrangement, so stretch your floral budget by opting for a greenery-heavy look instead. Utilize a textural mix of greenery for larger moments at your wedding, like a hanging installation. Then, concentrate your flower usage to areas that will be center stage in photos, like your bridal bouquet.

OPT FOR A ROAMING DINNER If you’re hoping to save on catering, and a bare-bones buffet isn’t really your style, look no further than the roaming dinner. Basically an all-night cocktail hour, an up-and-at-’em dinner consisting of passed bites and serve-yourself stations is a fresh (and frugal) take on the traditional reception meal. You’ll save some money since there’s less waitstaff needed, and guests will get to mingle all night instead sitting down for a formal meal. Just make sure the variety (and amount) of food guests would expect of a traditional dinner is still there, with lots of options.

PLAY UP YOUR VENUE DÉCOR Choosing a party spot with good bones is a priority when looking to make the most of your money. Getting a great deal on a ballroom won’t matter if you have to then spend big to cover up ’80s wallpaper and flooring you hate. You want to make sure your chosen venue feels 85 percent of the way “there” without having to add anything extra. When touring potential locations, pay attention to things you can’t tweak easily (or without spending a fortune), like good lighting, an open space, inoffensive wall coverings and decent flooring. From that “blank” slate, you can then work with your vendors to come up with décor accents that fit the space’s characteristics (and your budget), instead of working hard to disguise them.

SKIP THE RENTALS Trust us, no one is going to remember whether you chose silver or gold flatware on your wedding day. When it comes to rentals, it’s best to work with what your venue has to offer. While it may be necessary to rent some items, when it comes to purely stylistic choices, avoid upgrading unnecessarily if your budget doesn’t have the wiggle room. If you must elevate your venue’s basic dinnerware

Stick with the tabletop items your venue has on hand to save big on rentals.

It’s important that the photographer and the couple are on the same page about what they value in wedding pictures.

The photography industry can be complicated to navigate as a newly engaged couple, and hiring your wedding day photographer is arguably one of the biggest decisions you make throughout your entire planning journey. After all, this will be the person or team responsible for capturing all those emotional, tangible moments (not to mention all the beautiful details you’ve spent months planning) that will allow you to relive your day 10 or 20 years from now. Don’t stress—we’re here to help you out. We’ve rounded up our best advice to guide you in narrowing down your style and finding a true-to-you photography pro perfect for capturing every second of your unique celebration.

and contrast-y editorials of a favorite fashion blogger, then maybe you’ll want to seek out a photographer with a flair for the exaggerated and dramatic. By pairing your aesthetic choices (hint: you figured these out in step one) with the “vibe” you desire, you’ll end up with a photography blueprint that you can then easily articulate to potential pros to help explain your goals when it comes to your wedding pictures.

The first step to finding your dream photographer is a fun one (seriously!)—just go get inspired. Spend some time poring over any and every kind of imagery you love, such as sunny home décor shots, a fashion blogger’s Instagram feed or moody avantgarde French movie posters. Save each image that draws your eye as you go—then, once you have a good collection of inspiring photographs, take a step back and try to narrow in on what draws you to them specifically. Is it the soft pastel color palette? The offthe-cuff happy grins of the people in the picture? The interesting angles and perspectives? The more you familiarize yourself with what details you like, the easier it will be for you to eventually identify that same quality in a potential photographer’s portfolio.

DECIDE ON A “FEELING” Once you and your partner have figured out what inspires you image-wise, dig deeper and dissect what feels most authentic to your relationship and celebration, and how you envision your eventual wedding album looking. If you’re a timeless couple that has your heart set on formal, Vanity Fair-like family portraits, you may gravitate toward a more classic photography style. If a lot of your inspiration ended up being fly-on-the-wall images that bottle an authentic moment in time, then lifestyle photography may be the right choice for you. If you fell in love with the sharp

OHTKRSS20_Sect_09_(121_132).indd 128

DO YOUR RESEARCH Now’s the time to hit the web and find the pro who will bring your day to life. Browse The Knot Marketplace for photographers (and other vendors) in your area and price range, then peruse their portfolios and social media channels to identify if they’d be a good fit for your day. As you browse, ask yourself questions that are good indicators for a successful “match.” How do they capture the moments that are important to you? Have they shot in a venue similar to yours (bonus points if they’ve worked at your venue before)? Do they seem friendly and personable with their online audience? If available, check out reviews from past couples as well. Then, go ahead and send an introductory email with a bit of info about you and your soon-to-be spouse, your event (don’t forget to include your date!) and the vision for your day—you can even attach a few inspiration images you love from their portfolio, if you’d like. Once you’ve chatted about specifics (like whether their cal is even free to shoot your wedding), schedule some time to talk with them either on the phone or via video chat before signing on the dotted line so you can get to know each other on a personal and professional level. Why? You’ll be spending the most time with them on your wedding day, and you want to feel comfortable as they capture some of your and your family’s most emotional moments. ››

Tip: Skip the detailed shot list (they don’t need it!) and, instead, perfect your day-of timeline to pass off to your photographer. envisioning, like retouching services or an engagement session. Ask about any additional fees that could add up too, like having to pay for your photographer’s travel and lodging. Finally, settle on an image delivery date and make sure it’s reflected in your contract so you know exactly when you can expect your shots.

PREP FOR THE DAY OF

130

FINESSE THE CONTRACT To get the most out of your photography investment, you’re going to want to make note of several important points when choosing your package and reviewing your contract. Most photographers offer a variety of services to suit their couples’ individual needs. This can include everything from day-of edits and digital proofs to adding a second shooter, scoring tangible prints and ordering a gorgeously assembled album. With all those options for customization, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and feel unsure about what you actually want or need. When you’re ready to make things official, present your chosen photographer with your budget and rough day-of timeline and get their opinion on the best package for you. The amount of time they spend at an event or the number of shots they provide you with may be flexible, so see if you can find a middle ground that works for both of you. Now is also the time to inquire about the cost of any add-ons you’re

Instead of putting together a detailed shot list for your photographer, pass along your final day-of timeline a few weeks ahead of your wedding and give them an idea of what images you’d like captured (like a picture with each bridesmaid or detail shots of the heirloom jewelry you’ll be wearing). Then, let them do their thing! As long as you’ve provided a schedule that you’ll (mostly) stick to, they’ll be able to budget for time spent on your details, dance floor and everything in between on their own accord. Ahead of the wedding is also the time to give them a heads-up on any familial or friendship intricacies they should be aware of, like divorced parents who may want separate family portraits, a grandmother that needs to remain seated for shots, or a groomsman and bridesmaid that don’t get along (hey, it happens). If you’re hoping to get your wedding published online or in a magazine, relay that to your photographer as well. This way, they’ll know to put a little extra emphasis on snapping shots of all your amazing details and will likely come armed with gorgeous styling accessories, like ribbons, linens and more—all with the goal of helping your wedding day aesthetic truly stand out.

BE RELAXED AND READY Guys, take a big deep breath with us now. You’ve put a lot of work into finding and working with the right photographer up until this point, so—like with all your pros—it’s time to put your total faith in them. In the week leading up to your wedding, reach out to re-confirm all the important details (like your venue location, day-of timeline and any surprises you’ve planned for your guests or partner) and answer any lingering questions they may have, then chill out. The only thing that’s left for you and your partner to do now is enjoy yourselves and go get hitched— your pros will happily take care of the rest.

hether you’re a boholoving artist or an amateur sommelier, your bridal shower should be a day-of celebration that reflects you. We’ve rounded up a ton of fresh themes to help spark some serious shower inspiration. Pass them onto your crew, your MIL or your planner and get ready to enjoy the best day ever.

A MIDSUMMER’S DAY DREAM Floral-loving brides will swoon over a garden party-themed shower, complete with whimsical, feminine details. Decorate tables with a variety of pastel-hued flowers and tiered trays of sandwiches and sweets. Then, set up a DIY tea bar where guests can create their own mix to steep. (Tea not your jam? Give it a boozy brunch twist with a bellini bar instead!) Wrap up the day with a botanical-inspired activity, like flower crown making or plant-yourown herb pots, to echo the dreamy, pastoral setting.

Can’t wait for your romantic retreat after swapping vows? Your honeymoon doesn’t have to feel so far away if you let your getaway inspire your bridal shower. Theme the day’s décor and events based off of your chosen trip location, like a tiki party to echo your upcoming Hawaiian escape. Set up tropical touches like palm leaves, tiki torches and pineapples at home (or on a local beach) to create a mini oasis. Greet friends and family with fresh leis, and encourage an island-like atmosphere by serving up tropical drinks from a tiki bar and beachy bites like fresh mango salsa and grilled fish kebabs. When it comes to your registry, add wish list goodies that will seriously upgrade your honeymoon, like matching suitcases for your travels or cash for unique activities like surf lessons with The Knot Cash Fund. Thank your crew for “making the trip” with a honeymoon-inspired favor, like custom beach bags.

DESTINATION AFFAIR If you’re planning a destination wedding, ask the important women in your life to join you a day or two early and host your bridal shower nearby to bottle the essence of your chosen spot and give guests a more in-depth cultural experience. Allow your location to inspire your group activity, like a boat tour along the Amalfi Coast, a scenic hike in the Rocky Mountains or a

museum tour and a canal cruise in Amsterdam. Whatever your far-flung locale, this is the perfect opportunity for you and your guests to enjoy each other’s company and learn a little more about your city of love. Finish off your dreamy day with a unique favor inspired by your experience, like a sleeve of macarons from your Parisian soiree or handmade leather sandals from the island of Capri. ››

POP-CULTURE PARTY

SPLASH BASH

Pick your fave binge-worthy TV show or movie and spin it into an event even better than a chick flick night in. Obsessed with Game of Thrones and can’t imagine your shower without Jon Snow? Then bring him along! Well, not literally. Turn your party venue into a GoT-inspired fortress, decking out the space with House banners, a throne for your spot at the table, a menu inspired by the show and, of course, personal goblet cups. If that isn’t your thing, you could theme a party around whatever is—like I Love Lucy, Stranger Things and even The Office. Finish the day by gifting everyone Netflix gift cards so they can binge on their own.

Think of a pool party shower as the perfect way to tackle the heat and unite all of your favorite ladies for some fun in the sun. Consider renting out a private pool at a chic local hotel and personalize the space with fun décor, like kitchy pool floats, Instaworthy tropical florals and a retro, summer-ready playlist. You and your guests can enjoy icy refreshments (piña coladas, anyone?) and snacks like fresh fruit kebabs and lobster rolls. Once you’ve all soaked up enough vitamin D, bid your guests farewell with monogrammed floppy straw hats and a fun pair of sunnies to remember your celebration.

144

Make a backyard pool feel festive by decking it out with a slew of white balloon “bubbles”—and a well-stocked bar!

What sounds better than time with your favorite gals over a few glasses of vino? (Answer: Nothing!) Celebrate your upcoming nuptials by hosting the ladies you love at a vineyard, restaurant or even your home for an intimate wine tasting. Hire a pro sommelier to run you through a blind tasting, or compile a selection of your favorite whites and reds on your own for friends and family to try out. Pair the varietals with complementary snacks and a charcuterie board, then send guests on their way with a personalized wine glass and a custom-labeled bottle of wine to commemorate the vino-filled day.

APRÈS SKI LOUNGE Calling all snow bunnies! Whether you’re saying vows in the flurries or your shower just happens to take place in the winter season, embrace the big chill with a chic winter wonderland bash. Rent out a cozy lodge or restaurant with a fireplace, then enhance the frosty vibes with rustic décor, plush faux-fur throws, a hot chocolate bar and twinkly lights everywhere. Have guests rock a “uniform” of their favorite flannel button-downs or knit sweaters and treat them to unique activities like sugar cookie decorating or a cute photo booth with ski equipment, furry hats, gloves and witty signs. End the day with a sweet (and cozy!) favor, like custom mugs and hot chocolate packets. ››

SPA-AHHHH DAY

DESIGN AND DINE

If you’re a dedicated Pilates-goer, health food nut or a bride-to-be that just needs a little extra pampering time with her girls, then this is the shower theme for you. Inquire about renting a private room at a local spa or hire a company that will bring the R&R to your home, where you can offer up indulgences like manicures and pedicures, facials and even massages. Encourage the gals in attendance to rock their comfiest clothes (you can even give out slippers as a gift), then Zen out together while enjoying pampering, spa music and healthy bites like açai bowls or superfood smoothies. Finish the day with custom bath bomb and sheet mask favors.

We’re looking at you, DIY queen! Channel your creative passions into a bridal shower fit for a Pinterest obsessive and her crew. Book a class at a private art studio, pour some cocktails and get creating. Feel like spicing things up? Look for a joint that offers up a cute model as artistic inspiration (sorry, Gram!). If brush strokes aren’t exactly your specialty, opt for a ceramics or woodworking class instead—after all, what better time to try out something new than with your friends and family? Once you’ve created your masterpieces, head to a nice restaurant to share a few bites and sneak a peek at the group’s creations. Who knows—there may be a Picasso among you!

146

CULTURAL EXCURSION Enlighten loved ones to the important cultural elements that make you you with a shower celebration that incorporates you or your partner’s heritage. Pinpoint a few traditions, ceremonies or religious practices you can work into your day—think: flamenco dancing class in traditional dress, or a Japanese tea ceremony with matcha and sweets. You can also let your culture inspire the day’s favors by gifting guests something unique to your history, like custom bottles of sake or traditional bindi.

Fit for a foodie that wants to celebrate the big day by sharing her all-time fave eats with her squad, a cooking class shower is our idea of a good time. Enjoy being a chef for a day with a personalized class held at a nearby restaurant or culinary store (both Sur La Table and Williams Sonoma offer a slew of courses). Pull together a custom menu made up of all your and your partner’s favorite dishes, and outfit guests with personalized aprons they can cook in and bring home after (so cute, right?). Before they head home, encourage friends and family to sign a recipe card “guest book,” complete with instructions for their favorite date night dishes.

ngaged foodies are transforming their wedding reception into a must-eat event with countless creative takes on traditional catering. From fire and flames to custom curated menus and photoworthy installations—a meal is no longer just a meal. Want in on all the delicious fun? Check out five of our favorite food trends happening now.

2

If you’re looking for a standout moment that will leave guests ’gramming, hire a catering team with creative display techniques. Delicious food is a must-have, of course—but setups that have guests interacting with their meal are an even better upgrade. Look to bring in a local catering team that injects their food service with a bit of theatrics (like having guests press their own grilled cheese, pluck the cocktail of their choice from a conveyor belt or spin a prize wheel for a surprise pizza slice). The goal? A wayabove-average food experience that entertains your guests while they eat and will leave everyone talking long after your wedding is over. If you’ve already nailed down your menu and catering team, infuse your day with a little bit of magic by dreaming up creative ways to package or pass some bites already on your menu, like a pegboard wall of cotton candy or a late-night burger bar with a cheeky sign that reads “friends don’t let friends go home hangry.”

PERFECTLY PERSONALIZED PICKS You and your partner want every inch of your wedding to reflect the two of you, so your food selection shouldn’t be any different. Couples are personalizing all aspects of their day, down to the menu they’re serving at their reception. For a fun twist on signature cocktails, why not try signature

menus? Maybe bae is a bit more spicy, while you prefer rich, savory classics—you can each work to curate your own courses for the day and allow your guests to choose which side they’ll take. Or include a bit of your history and heritage into the eats by asking your pros to adapt a few favorite family recipes for the evening. Guests will love cocktail hour bites of Grandma Ruth’s mac and cheese or Mom’s famous chicken tikka masala. A menu reflecting both where you’ve come from and what you like as a duo is the perfect way to start your marriage off on the right fork. ››

ON-THE-MOVE MEAL We’ve got news: The one-size-fitsall dinner reception structure is no longer the only option. If the idea of sitting down to a three-hour formal meal isn’t your thing, try a roaming dinner instead. Feed your friends and fam from an assortment of delicious passed appetizers and food stations, like waiters with barker trays for on-the-go oyster shucking, a guac bar or even a mozzarella-pulling station. The goal is to keep guests moving, mixing and mingling so they don’t get bored or feel like they’re missing out on party time. Another perk? Without the need for traditional tables, chairs and place settings, you’ll save on rentals and possibly even staff count (as they won’t need to serve each table like at a sit-down reception). Just remember—guests will still need somewhere to perch, so be sure to set up several different high-top cocktail tables and cool lounge areas for added comfort.

Pretty plating is like a feast for the eyes— before it hits your stomach.

THE NEW FARM-TO-TABLE Local is in when it comes to weddings, and that fresh mentality extends from florals to—you guessed it—food. For a dining experience that encapsulates everything about your locale, opt for a farm-to-table menu from start to finish. More and more catering companies are meeting the demand and focusing their menus on seasonal goodness, like sustainable and local meats, fish and produce, for a wedding meal that represents both the couple and their region of choice. If you’re lucky enough to be getting married in a foodrich area or time of year, encourage your team to utilize veggies, proteins or spices unique to your spot, like fresh lobster in Maine or a well-known barbecue rub in Texas. Not only will you be scoring food in its best form (think: peak freshness and added color), but you’ll also be giving back to the local community. It’s a very mindful, sustainable, 2020 way to wedding.

5

IN-YOUR-FACE PRESENTATIONS If you’ve ever been wowed by a fishmonger filleting a catch right in front of you, or excited by the flames of a hibachi grill, then this idea may be for you. When planning out your wedding day catering, look for a crew that can essentially pop up a live restaurant on your event ground. You’ll instantly upgrade what was once a basic meal into a fullblown event at your reception. That can mean transforming your outdoor venue into a legit working barbecue joint that’s cooking up spit-roasted pig and heirloom chickens over an open flame in front of your guests, or a tableside assembly of artistically-inspired dessert spread (read: decorative chocolate smears and edible florals). The end result? A unique dining experience that will keep guests entertained long into your reception and create a one-of-a-kind event they won’t soon forget.

THE BASICS Start off by doing some research. In our (ahem) unbiased opinion, TheKnot.com is a great place to start— you can search thousands of dresses by color, fabric and style and find stores in your area that carry your faves. If you’re flipping through magazines or browsing Pinterest or Instagram, tear out pages and save or pin images to help zero in on what you like.

190

BEGIN BY BROWSING

ORDER THE DRES SES AT THE SAME TIME SO THEY COME FROM THE SAME DYE L O T. T H E N , S E N D AN EMAIL TO YOUR GIRLS DETAILING THE TIMELINE AND THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES. FOLLOW UP WITH THEM ABOUT A WEEK BEFORE THE DRESSES ARE DUE TO ARRIVE.

KEEP COSTS IN MIND If any of your friends have been in a wedding party before, they’ll know that bridesmaids pay for their own dresses. But a gentle reminder is never a bad idea. When it comes to price, try to be considerate of your friends’ lifestyles. If you’re concerned your wedding and the events surrounding it might be a financial burden for one or more of your bridesmaids, focus your search on more affordable dresses or select a color you like and let them pick their own style and price point.

To ensure your bridesmaid dresses match your style, order your gown before making any decisions about them. Keep in mind: It takes two to three months for custom orders to arrive and an additional four to six weeks for alterations. A six-month cushion will give you and your friends ample time to find, order and tailor the dresses.

STICK TO A SCHEDULE

FIND THE RIGHT FIT A bridesmaid dress is typically ordered using a person’s biggest measurements, so your friends will likely buy dresses at least a size or two larger than they normally wear. If a friend wants to buy a size smaller, let her know it’s easier to alter a bigger dress. In the same vein, don’t choose dresses from brands that don’t carry plus if your bridesmaids are not all straight size (0 to 14). ››

OHTKRSS20_Sect_13_(187_200).indd 190

REA L TA LK

Your bridal party vision doesn’t have to be super rigid. For example, your bridesmaids don’t need to all wear the exact same dress for your wedding photos to turn out awesome. Your day is about celebrating and spending time with the people you love, so don’t get hung up on little details like forcing your friends to look matchy-matchy if it’s just not working for everyone.

SHOP ACCORDINGLY Consider what kind of shopping experience will suit your personality best. If you tend to have strong opinions, it’s probably better to shop alone (or with just one friend or family member). If you prefer more input, take the whole gang and give them guidelines, like color or fabric. Then have them try on options and make a group decision.

A GUIDE TO COLOR

PICKING THE RIGHT PALETTE

There are several foolproof ways to pick the perfect color. One of the easiest methods is to play off of the color schemes of the venue and the season. For instance, if your wedding will be held at a rustic vineyard with burgundy décor in the middle of winter, you’ll probably want to rule out sunshineyellow dresses. Rich colors like emerald, eggplant and crimson work well in the fall and winter months, while lighter shades like sage green, lavender and blush are perfect for spring and summer. If you’re still at a loss for exactly which hue to choose, go for a general color (like blue) or color family (think: jewel tones) and let your bridesmaids pick their favorite shades from light to dark for a mismatched effect. Another thought: Toss tradition altogether and opt for chic, all-white dresses and jumpsuits in a variety of fabrics and styles.

Once you’ve chosen a dress shade you love, it’s time to figure out which accent colors work with it. Here’s what to pair with the hues of the moment:

SELECTING A SHADE

If your attendants have a diverse range of skin tones, think about choosing a universally flattering color. More muted colors like blush, gunmetal gray and dusty blue work on pretty much everyone and are also right on trend. Want an edgier feel? It’s hard to go wrong with pretty metallics like rose gold and champagne.

FINDING COMPLEMENTARY COLORS

To push the envelope even further, consider prints—floral-print bridesmaid dresses are hot right now. Just remember patterns work best in smaller parties and should be paired with simple accessories like monochromatic shoes and minimal jewelry. If you have a larger party of six or more, consider having your maid of honor wear a printed dress while your other attendants wear solid colors—it’s a fun way to give your MOH a shout-out while still maintaining a cohesive-looking group.

CHOOSING A PRINT

There’s a reason this light pink shade has staying power: It goes with a wide range of accent colors and is romantic without being frilly. Metallics like copper, rose gold and yellow gold pop against this stonewashed shade. For a softer palette, mix it with pastels like mint or natural tones like taupe.

BLUSH

A combination of mauve and pink, lilac has rustic associations. To play up its floral roots, pair lilac with lush shades of green (try sage, olive or hunter). Or go full-on Manic Pixie and opt for analogous colors like purple and pink.

LILAC

RUBY This is what we call a power color. A rich shade of red, ruby can feel either earthy or regal, depending on how you work with it. For an instantly royal effect, consider an opulent accent color like gold. If you’re going for a more understated look, blush and beige create a pretty contrast.

One of the most versatile colors, this deep shade of blue jives with almost every wedding style and venue. Add red or hot-pink accents for a preppy feel, coral or lemon yellow for a more tropical vibe or lighter blues for a dreamy tone-on-tone palette.

NAVY

This color is pure sophistication. For formal nuptials, mix in glittery metallics like silver or pewter. For a more casual affair, try cooler blues or navy. The subtlety of gray also makes it ideal for experimenting with different textures like pleated chiffon, velvet or beaded embellishments. ››

ACCESSORY ADVICE Before you get into the fun stuff (hello, sparkly jewelry and shoes!), remind your girls to get the right undergarments. Depending on the type of dress (strapless, low back or one shoulder), your bridesmaids may need some special support. Trust us: The wrong bra can make even the fanciest dress look unflattering. Where more specific shapewear is concerned, let your friends call the shots. If they opt to wear a body shaper, that’s great. If they feel more comfortable without one, that’s also great.

It’s up to you whether you want head-to-toe wardrobe control, but we should warn you: By demanding that your friends wear certain footwear, you’re officially entering bridezilla territory. That said, there are occasions where the right shoes can make the outfit. A black cocktail dress paired with pink stilettos feels more flirty than classic. The same dress paired with jeweled sandals serves up black-tie glamour. If you want to win points with your bridesmaids, have them sport a style they already own. The next best thing? Pick a color and heel height and let them choose the style they feel most comfortable wearing. Lastly, before you send them shopping, specify if the wedding will be indoors. Stilettos make an outdoor photo session nearly impossible.

SIZING UP HER SHOES

If you’re buying your friends jewelry as a gift, give them a hint so they won’t splurge on any new pieces. Have a look in mind but want them to use their own jewels? Set guidelines by size and color. Small and subtle is a foolproof combo for jewelry, like studs and a pendant necklace. And let their dress color determine the metal: gold jewelry for warm tones, silver for cool shades, and diamonds and pearls for everything in between.

OHTKRSS20_Sect_13_(187_200).indd 197

CLASSIC Simplicity is key to nailing timeless bridal style. For sparkle that won’t clash with a classic gown, invest in understated jewelry like pearl drop earrings, diamond studs or a thin tennis bracelet you’ll want to wear long after your wedding day. To make a more dramatic statement, consider crystal-encrusted or pearl hair clips, or a long, sheer veil with lace edging that matches the fabric of your gown. Looking to infuse a pop of color into your streamlined ensemble? Give a nod to the “something blue” tradition with a pair of baby-blue heels or a sapphire pendant. Another thought: Pair a black-velvet sash with your dress. It’s a bold accessory that creates a sophisticated contrast and accentuates your waist.

FASHION + BEAUTY Layer on lots of different bracelets for a cool, mismatched effect.

RUSTIC Give a nod to your outdoor surroundings with nature-inspired details in a stonewashed palette. Lush flower crowns with a mix of blooms or sprigs of baby’s breath are a great place to start. To add some sparkle to your ensemble, go for antique gold, rose gold or pewter jewelry embellished with raw gemstones or crystals. If you’re going all in, skip the fancy heels and opt for distressed boots in leather or suede. For fall or winter nuptials, keep warm with a faux-fur coat, denim jacket or textured knit wrap.

Saying “I do” with your toes in the sand? A seaside locale calls for effortless wedding attire and fun, colorful accessories. Freshwater pearls, tropical statement earrings, cowrie shell bracelets and delicate layered necklaces are right on trend. If you’re feeling bold, a straw hat decorated with local, fresh flowers makes for a cute photo. Where footwear is concerned, less is more. Forgo shoes altogether or swap out your heels for embellished sandals. If you want the added height of a heel without any of the fuss, white or metallic grosgrain wedges or platforms offer more stability on the sand than traditional stilettos or pumps.

ROMANTIC A touch more luxe than a rustic wedding, gauzy fabrics, floral embellishments and soft, pastel hues emphasize the dreamy feel of romantic nuptials. Whether you’re wearing a sexy, curve-skimming dress or a frothy, embellished ensemble, consider wearing a long, sheer veil for a dramatic detail that won’t distract. Or, channel your inner Renaissance heroine with a boho Juliet cap veil plus floral accents. Polish off your look with lots of whimsical jewelry (we love pieces that incorporate oversize flowers, butterflies and even bees), or focus on one statement piece, like a pair of ornate chandelier earrings.

200

VINTAGE This style can refer to a wide range of time periods, so first narrow down the feel you’re going for. Is it the sophistication of the ’50s or the glamour of the ’20s? If the former, a birdcage veil is a totally retro option and works with a variety of dresses. If you aren’t crazy about the idea of wearing a veil, hair combs and headbands with classic touches like lace or pearls also add polish to any hairstyle. To channel the glitz of the Roaring Twenties, opt for feathery and beaded headbands, art deco statement accessories and swinging fringe details. Vintage style also lends itself to old-fashioned jewelry. Repurpose your own family heirlooms or browse local estate sales and vintage stores to find special pieces with an antique vibe.

Dull Skin

PROBLEM: “I want the opposite of a glow on my wedding day,” said no bride ever. But seasonal changes and dehydration (say, from hitting the wine to counteract wedding planning stress) can cause your complexion to have a dry, lackluster appearance. To boost your glow at home, incorporate a vitamin C serum into your morning skin care routine. “This can help prevent fine lines, wrinkles and skin cancer. It also notably brightens the complexion as it’s a potent antioxidant,” says Marnie Nussbaum, a dermatologist in New York. You can also try an at-home glycolic peel—just make sure you give yourself a couple of weeks before your wedding to avoid walking down the aisle with blotchy, irritated skin. For more immediate results, consider making an appointment with a dermatologist for a Clear + Brilliant or Fraxel laser facial to resurface the skin and stimulate collagen production. “Both are fractional laser treatments that jump-start the regeneration of new skin, increasing collagen and elastin,” Nussbaum says. “They also improve skin tone and texture and exfoliate away dead skin cells.” Pro tip: Schedule these treatments at least a few weeks before your day. The effects of Fraxel can take up to seven days to heal, and Clear + Brilliant can take up to three.

Start amping up your skin care routine a year to six months before your day.

Using acne products may cause skin to get worse before it gets better— they can cause a temporary purging effect.

Acne Scars

PROBLEM: The only thing worse than a major zit is a deep, lingering reminder. Acne scars can be the result of moderate to severe acne, and typically show up as uneven or “pitted” areas. “Microneedling treatments, specifically those with a device called Vivace, can help soften or reverse this scarring,” Mack says. A microneedling tool that is coupled with radiofrequency, Vivace stimulates collagen production to plump up pitted areas over time and rejuvenate the skin. After a treatment, you may experience mild redness and pinpoint bleeding that lasts from one to two hours. The big plus to looking like raw meat for a couple of hours? You can expect to see smaller pores, tighter skin and an overall more even complexion within a few weeks. If microneedling isn’t in your budget (the cost can run upward of $650 a session), almighty retinol can also resurface pitted areas—but won’t do away with them completely. ››

Acne-Prone Skin

PROBLEM: Pimples are a rite of passage, but not everyone stops dealing with breakouts after their teenage years. If you’re eager to clear up your skin before your day, we hear you. To tackle this problem at home, look into adding retinoid products like Differin gel into your regimen. “Apply a peasize amount at night with an overlying oil-free moisturizer like Cerave PM to combat dryness,” says Lian Mack, a dermatologist at GlamDerm in New York. Keep in mind it can take an average of six to eight weeks for breakouts to ease up after starting an acne regimen. And, using acne products may cause skin to get worse before it gets better. “They can cause a temporary purging effect, where congestion comes to the surface,” Mack says. If you’re looking for a more aggressive treatment, consider a series of salicylic acid peels. This potent ingredient combats acne by clearing up clogged pores. It also speeds up cellular turnover, which can help with scarring and discoloration. Mack recommends three peels spaced out a month apart. Start this process four months before your “I dos” to give yourself ample time to heal.

Under-Eye Bags

PROBLEM: Real talk: No matter how much sleep you get, under-eye bags can make you look chronically exhausted. With age, the tissues and muscles surrounding the eyelids weaken, causing the fat that helps support the eyes to move into the lower eyelids. The result? Puffy eye bags. If yours are minor, fixing them can be as easy as some topical TLC and a change of diet. “In addition to an eye cream, apply cool compresses to your eyes and limit fluid and sodium intake before bedtime,” says Konstantin Vasyukevich, MD, a facial plastic surgeon in New York. If these solutions don’t work, a surgical procedure called a lower blepharoplasty is an option. “This removes fat through a small incision on either the outside or inside of the eyelid, rejuvenating the eyes,” Vasyukevich says. Obviously, going under the knife requires more planning than just splurging on a fancy eye cream, so plan wisely. The side effects of blepharoplasty are minor (irritated eyes and bruising), but recovery time depends on the extent of the procedure and can range from three to seven days.

PROBLEM:

Hollow Under Eyes

Basically the opposite problem as eye bags, hollow under eyes can also make you look sleep deprived, and are caused by loss of facial volume (read: superficial fat and muscle) that happen with age. The big con where this issue is concerned? There’s no DIY solution. Instead, Vasyukevich recommends using injectable fillers under the eyes. While the word “filler” may conjure images of pouty-lipped Instagram celebs, these injectables are actually super effective at making up for lost facial volume and can last anywhere from six to nine months. Here’s how they work: Once injected, filler (hyaluronic acid is the most popular kind) sits under the skin, immediately plumping up hollow areas and smoothing out deep creases and wrinkles. Although there isn’t significant downtime associated with this treatment, timing it right is important. Plan to get filler around four months before your wedding so you won’t look less (ahem) refreshed at your prewedding events.

Fine Lines + Wrinkles

PROBLEM: Facial wrinkles across the forehead, between the brows, at the outer corners of the eyes and around the mouth typically appear in your mid-30s and become deeper with time. If your fine lines aren’t severe, applying a hyaluronic acid serum that draws in water from your skin can reduce their appearance. “Skin Medica has a long-releasing hyaluronic acid, which erases wrinkles, even under your eyes where your makeup can collect and draw attention to fine lines,” says Sabrina Fabi, a dermatologist in San Diego. (We recommend stashing a tube in your emergency kit to reapply throughout the day.) If your lines are more significant, consider botulinum toxin. Commonly referred to as Botox (fun fact: Botox is actually a brand name of one of the most popular versions of botulinum toxin), this injectable also goes by the name Dysport, Xeomin and Jeuveau. When used for antiaging purposes, it smooths out wrinkles caused by the repetitive activity of the facial muscles. “Neurotoxins take two weeks to take effect, but if you have deeper lines, there’s an added benefit of repeating treatment,” Fabi says. Bottom line: You’ll probably want to have two treatments before your day, so don’t wait more than five months before your wedding date to try it.

Skin Discoloration

PROBLEM: Whether you have sun damage or dark spots from other causes like hormonal changes, hyperpigmentation can be tough to get rid of. Previously, dermatologists relied on two therapies to combat it: Intense Pulse Light (IPL) therapy and hydroquinone (a skin bleach). The major drawback to these methods? The first doesn’t protect against future dark spots, and the other can be too harsh for certain skin types. However, thanks to growing interest in treating this common skin issue, those aren’t the only options anymore. “The Alexandrite laser is the best treatment for hyperpigmentation,” says Dennis Gross, a dermatologist in New York. “It works by targeting the pigmented areas with light, breaking them up.” You’ll need a series of two or three treatments to see results, and recovery time can vary from two to five days. To address dark spots without the help of a professional, Gross recommends investing in a high-dose vitamin C serum, which can take up to eight weeks to show results. “I developed the Clinical Grade IPL Dark Spot Correcting Serum, which corrects dark spots but also protects against future pigmentation forming,” he says. Pro tip: To get the most out of these treatments, wear SPF and stay out of the sun.

LAST LOOK

Our first date was over coffee,” Afnan says. “We enjoy trying different coffee shops—though he prefers black Turkish coffee and I love American lattes. We just had to stop at Coffee Connections. Our drinks warmed us up amid the winter weather, and the time spent alone together brought warmth to our hearts.”
