He is an accomplished photographer, whose long list of celebrity clients include Cardi B, Ruby Rose, Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, Jim Parsons, Prince, Taraji P Henson, , Kelly Clarkson, Queen Latifah, Adam Lambert, Kelly Rowland, Betty White and the list goes on and on. He’s also gone on direct several music videos for artists such as Kelly Rowland, Vanessa Williams, Erika Jayne and Rupaul and made his feature film directorial debut with the uproarious comedy “StarrBooty” starring Rupaul. his cover story highlights his passion for photography. It’s amazing how every shoot he does tells a different story. The question I want answered is where does he come up with all of these ideas—movies, comic strips, books, travel? Who actually knows but we all enjoy seeing what he will come up with next. This cover story highlights his passion for photography. It’s amazing how every shoot he does tells a different story. The question I want answered is where does he come up with all of these ideas—movies, comic strips, books, travel? Who actually knows but we all enjoy seeing what he will come up with next. Mike’s passion does not stop with the arts. His relentless work on behalf of pitbull type dogs is a beautiful thing see. I visit his Instagram regularly to see the countless videos and images of pitbull type dogs needing to be rescued, fostered or adopted. He has also been an staunch advocate for the LGBTQ community since the beginning of his career supporting such organizations as The Ali Forney Center, GMHC, The Trevor Project, Housing Works, It Gets Better Campaign, Live Out Loud, Project Angel Food, and GLAAD. He uses his voice and art in ways that transcend the business of photography.
1. How did you get into photography? I got a camera for Christmas when I was almost 30. I found that the camera could say stuff that I couldn’t find words for, so it quickly became my form of communication.
2. Whose work has influenced you most? I came of age in the 80s and Pierre and Gilles were huge at that time. I loved the way they created a world that pleased them. That influenced my approach to photography. I began to create the world that I needed to see.
3. What are you working on these days? I’ve taken on the role of creative director for an indy magazine called PHOTOBOOK. We are about to do a big relaunch and I’m so proud of the outcome. I did a complete visual overhaul and it looks so amazing. I’m grateful to the editor in chief , Alison Hernon, for trusting me so much. I’ve also partnered with a friend of mine who started a site called “Social Impak” which is a group of collaborators whose art will appear on a variety of items that appeal to the masses. 25% of my proceeds will go to charities that will revolve over time. https://socialimpak.com/collections/mike-ruiz
6. You’ve been a longtime advocate in the LGBTQ community. What compells you?
Prior to the pandemic, , I created a program for emerging photographers that gives them the opportunity to do high-end photoshoots and to gain access to some of the best in the business—everyone from great models, celebs, fashion editors, hair and makeup artists. I then produce and creative direct the entire thing to ensure that it’s of the highest caliber. I then find magazine placement in respected publications so that they can become visible to the industry. It takes years to gain the type of access that I have, and I use the access to help talented young photographers fast track a career. It’s basically a real world, hands-on experience that you could never get in a photography workshop. Actually, 2 of my mentees shot the cover for you.
I’ve been involved with various LGBTQ organizations for well over a decade. Having been marginalized in my youth, I felt that it was my responsibility as an adult to do what I could to offer a helping hand where I could. The second I had any visibility at all, I used it as best I could to give a voice to voiceless LGBTQ youth. The organization that I have continued to support throughout the years is The Ali Forney Center for Homeless LGBTQ youth. They do such incredible work setting displaced youth on the right track and providing essential services to them in the process.
Lastly, I’m in the thralls of promoting my annual calendar called “Pitties and Pecs” which benefits a wonderful rescue, www.phillybullyteam.com Calendars are available at that link and 100% of the proceeds go to saving dogs who have been abused, neglected and discarded.
7. What is the secret to your success? Never take no for an answer.
4. Why did you choose to shoot celebrity and editorial photography? I began shooting while living in Los Angeles. I would see celebs at the gym all the time and being as naïve as I was, I would ask them if I could photograph them. Most of them thought I was a weirdo, but a couple of them actually ponied up. That gave me the courage to call some entertainment magazines. I met a wonderful woman named Rose Cefelu, who started giving me celebrity assignments immediately. I still work with Rose to this day.
5. It seems that you’ve been using your visibility responsibly over the years supporting a multitude of organizations. Tell us about your philanthropy work these days, specifically your advocacy on behalf of pitbull type dogs. I met and fell in love with Oliver, a sweet pitbull type dog, in 2012. He was being fostered by my dear fried Tim Brock at the time. It was love at first sight. There was no way I was leaving this angel behind. Within 24 hours, I had filled out the paperwork and passed the thorough screening by the rescue, Bullies and Buddies. could to educate the general public on the true nature of these magical animals.
