Research Study Details
Benchmarking definition
This proposal subscribes to the actual health programs objectives regarding health promotion and generation and awareness of health knowledge in GCC states. The GCCHB project’s potential ensures a better coping with healthcare challenges in the GCC states and contributes to development and innovation in the field of healthcare.
An operational definition of benchmarking as developed by specialists is “finding and implementing best practices.” Although benchmarking has widely spread throughout industry, it is only just beginning to find application in healthcare.
Kuwait Oman Saudi Arabia United Arab Emirates
This type of benchmarking project requires the analysis of different health indicators that are representative for a hospital’s activity.
Hospital Benchmarking and its importance Benchmarking plays a key role in helping organizations to monitor their performance and deal with the policy process in their industry. This benchmarking study can target business, support, and clinical functions. However, healthcare benchmarking lacks a welldefined systematic approach and this is mainly caused by the complexity of the field, which can be considered a barrier if we consider the data collection processes and project costs.
Organisational Profile
There is a high need in exploring this niche in order to determine the areas of improvement in GCC states’ hospitals, so that progress could be driven in both cases of poor and high quality healthcare conditions. One of the main challenges is that hospitals should adapt to consumer demand for improved service, integration of care within conventional services and quality.

Benchmarking represents a process of comparing a product, process or a service between two or more organizations that offer it. The main objective of a benchmarking study would be to identify the process which achieves a superior performance and to analyse the facts behind that success. A benchmark is usually used for improving the organization’s processes, communication or for budgetary reasons. Historically, benchmarking is based on tools like competitive advantage and Kaizen (continuous incremental improvement or “change for the best”).

Moreover, benchmarking is a difficult process that requires commitment in order to succeed. There is a need of free flow of information that might be restrained by competitive sensitivity. 2
The KPI Institute GCC Healthcare Benchmarking Project
Develop the potential of benchmarking in the GCC states in the field of healthcare Provide a unique framework for benchmarking in the healthcare sector Organize a series of conferences to address key issues for benchmarking in the healthcare sector Produce specific recommendations in relation to the development and application of benchmarking in fields covered by hospital policy Provide input regarding Hospital Key Performance Indicators in the GCC states
Scope and countries covered The GCCHB project is intended to provide the GCC community a wide overview and data access to the most important key performance indicators for hospitals.
Our benchmarking process is based on four main stages: 1. Planning: set up the objectives, literature research, stakeholders’ targeting, preliminary questionnaire 2. Data Collection: surveys, site visits, interviews 3. Analyses: comparative statistical and practical analyses of the participating organizations, analysis of discrepancies 4. Improvement: possibility to apply potential changes as results of the study into the organization’s management system, in order to improve performance; monitor progress and plan ongoing benchmark. Perceptions of managers, clinicians and finance personnel towards healthcare indicators are compared. Both qualitative and quantitative data are collected from GCC hospitals and results are cross compared to analyse both organisational and professional perceptions.
Organisational Profile
Hospitals will be benchmarked according to their actual performance and at the end of the study they will be able to follow their indicators and benchmarks themselves in a GCC ranking.
