The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation improves the quality of life in Kitchener, Waterloo and area, now and for generations to come, by building community endowment, addressing needs through grant making, and providing leadership on key community issues.
our mission
n
the Immigration Partnership Fund for Syrian Newcomers. Although you might never meet the beneficiaries of your gifts, your exemplary leadership has certainly made an impact on belonging in our community and it will never be forgotten.
For many years now, our donors have recognized the importance of giving to the Community Fund, an unrestricted source of funding that allows us to address the ever changing needs of the community. This year we implemented changes to our granting programs to maximize the impact of our Community Fund. The Foundation’s staff has worked hard to engineer the Smart & Caring Grants Program: a multi-faceted approach to spending these funds to better serve the priority areas of Kitchener, Waterloo, Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich.
We are thrilled to report that one hundred percent of the Community Fund investment was directed to projects and programs that are moving the needle on Belonging and Leadership. We extend a sincere thank you to all of the grantees who have mobilized to make Belonging a priority. We look forward to reporting on the impact you have made to improve the physical and mental well-being in Waterloo Region.
From time to time our community experiences an unanticipated or urgent need for support. Having the flexibility of the Community Fund allows us to provide an immediate solution. For example, this year our community prepared to welcome a large group of Syrian newcomers. There was an urgent need to streamline fundraising initiatives. Through the Community Fund and our work with the Immigration Partnership of Waterloo Region, we were able to quickly coordinate a funding solution that will have a positive impact on the lives of the Syrian newcomers and our community for years to come. We want to thank everyone who contributed to The Foundation’s Community Fund, as well as

We know we are on the right track by keeping Belonging and Leadership at the forefront of our work. In May we had the good fortune to attend the Community Foundations of Canada biennial conference, “The Wild, Wild Why”. Three of our Board members travelled to Calgary with The KWCF leadership team, attending peer gatherings, learning more about the community foundation movement, and bringing home best practices and lessons learned. It was a great opportunity to connect with our colleagues from across the nation on topics that are faced by every community and every foundation. We learned that Belonging and Leadership are priorities shared by most of the 191 foundations in the Canadian movement. Learning is at the core for the work we do as The KWCF Board. One such learning opportunity happened earlier this year when we participated in a Community Foundation exercise called What’s Next for Community Philanthropy. We learned about the different
types of opportunities available to us and more specifically, how the Board (individually and as a whole) felt about where we are strategically and where we could go as a Foundation. In the Fall we were delighted to add two new members to our Board of Directors. John Milloy and Dan Herman bring with them a wealth of knowledge and a passion for building community. We look forward to hearing their voices around the table as we continue to learn about new opportunities for growth, partnership and collaboration.

THIS PAST YEAR, TNC ALSO PERFOR M ED THE D ATA ANALYSI S FOR WATERLO O REGIO N’S VITAL SIGNS ® . IN THIS AR TICL E , ANDR E W R E FLE CTS O N WHAT THE KWCF HAS LEARNED AB OUT BELONGI NG, AND HOW TO TRACK PROGRESS. Since Vital Signs first identified Belonging as a priority area for our community in 2013, it has permeated every aspect of The KWCF’s work. In 2014, The Foundation released the Belonging Report, and in 2015 Belonging became the key focus of the Smart & Caring Grants Program. Much has been learned through this work. We know more now about the obstacles to Belonging and the populations that may be left out. The three building blocks of Belonging (authentic interaction, welcoming people, and shared interests/shared goals) have informed the design of new granting streams and provoked in-depth community discussions. However, all this information is only powerful if it leads to action! The team at TNC has been working with The Foundation to make sure that community investments have the best chance of building Belonging. Fortunately, the charitable organizations that The KWCF supports are ideally positioned for this work. They are flexible and welcoming. They offer tangible services and supports, but they also bring people together to socialize and to play. Even so, it isn’t always easy to demonstrate the impact of this important work. An increased sense of Belonging isn’t something you can see or touch. We are helping grant recipients to overcome this challenge, by “unpacking” Belonging into more concrete outcomes. These are like “steps along the way” to creating a strong sense of community Belonging. steps on the way to belonging

As our work with The KWCF moves forward, we continue to develop a deeper understanding of Belonging and a more refined grantmaking strategy. Recently, we met with a group of new grant recipients to talk about how Belonging theory had informed their project designs, and to share ideas about measuring Belonging. We look forward to seeing what new insights emerge as these exciting new projects unfold.

BUILDING

,
We build assets and other funds to provide lasting support for local priorities. We make giving easy and effective, accepting a wide variety of gifts and providing donors with a number of charitable options. You can contribute cash, stocks, property, and other assets. You may establish a fund in your name or in the name of a loved one. In most cases, your gift qualifies for maximum tax advantage under federal law.
t e n
At The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation, asset building also includes knowledge and relationships. By building our knowledge of community issues and opportunities as well as developing and maintaining strategic relationships, The KWCF provides a strong foundation for community development.
INVESTING We know how important it is to invest in our community, and it is at the core of what we do. We invest in our community using all of our assets; leveraging our relationships and our community knowledge to invest dollars strategically to support the areas of critical need facing Kitchener, Waterloo and area.

Our business is building community. We are proud to act as a catalyst to encourage discussion on key topics, engage future leaders in philanthropy, and work towards developing a community with a sense of belonging, where everyone can truly make a lasting difference.
The 2015 Priority Report edition of Vital Signs was launched to the community in October 2015. Lakhdeep Dhaliwal shared his inspiring story of belonging with the 125 attendees.

In September 2015, when the heartbreaking photo of toddler Alan Kurdi, who had washed up on a Turkish shore, went viral, the world could no longer avert its eyes from the Syrian refugee crisis. Soon, people across Canada jumped into action, offering to sponsor families, donate goods and raise funds to bring the suffering to safety. But when it was announced that more than 1,000 government-assisted and privately sponsored refugees would soon be settling in Waterloo Region, local community leaders needed to work quickly. Not only would they have to set up housing, transportation, health care and schooling at lightning speed, their approach still had to be thoughtful and coordinated.
s t o r y d o n o r
If they did their jobs well, they would help traumatized families land on their feet and create a sense of hope and long-term belonging within their new community. Tara Bedard, Waterloo Region Immigration Partnership manager, knew what was at stake. “These are people who have had to leave their homes and their families,” she says. “They’ve given up everything and come to this country with nothing. It’s a lot of work for organizations to support people in that situation to really get settled.”
f o u r t e e n
Fortunately, Immigration Partnership knew which organizations to reach out to for assistance and invited The KWCF to handle financial contributions. The Immigration Partnership Fund for Syrian Newcomers launched with a $100 donation, but within days $80,000 worth of donations flooded in. The KWCF also stepped up by establishing a matching program. Between pledges received from Fundholders and the support of The KWCF unrestricted fund, $400,000 was committed for matched donations. The KWCF handled it all and Bedard says she couldn’t have been more relieved. “We wouldn’t have been able to do this without The KWCF. There are so many complex layers to organizing something like this,” she says. “Having them on board and wholly embracing this by saying, ‘We are going to support you through the process,’ has made all the difference.” Lucia Harrison, CEO of the Kitchener Waterloo Multicultural Centre, and a member of the Immigration Partnership Council, says she believes the combined efforts of partners working together will benefit all future refugees too. And, of course, the concerned people of Waterloo Region won’t soon forget their sense of accomplishment when welcoming newcomers to cities they’re proud to share. “They too have a sense of belonging, a sense of self and of community,” she says. “All of those things are important and have come out of this.”

When Ibtisam Saeed first landed in Canada eight years ago after leaving Saudi Arabia, her immediate reaction was, “This is a cold country!” But the cool, damp spring of Waterloo Region was the least of the 16-year-old’s worries. “I wanted to make friends and fit in,” she says now. But how? Saeed didn’t speak English, and everything about Canada seemed overwhelming and indecipherable. That is, until a YMCA staff member visited her English language class and convinced her to attend a newcomer youth leadership group where she could meet other newcomer teens. Saeed tried it, played games, made friends—then wanted more. Today, after years of volunteering and working at the YMCA, Saeed is a success story. She’s the team lead for youth programs for the YMCA’s of Cambridge and Kitchener-Waterloo. Although her position has given her a career, giving back to the community has given her something just as vital: a deep sense of belonging and a connection to the larger community. “When I give more, I feel I belong more,” she says. Saeed is one of the inspirations behind a new YMCA project launched in 2015: the Newcomer Youth Pathway to Belonging Project. The project received over $130,000 in support from The KWCF’s Community Grants Program.

Unlike a place-based program that runs for, say, ten weeks and then ends, this project helps newcomer youth between 12 and 19 years old create a relevant pathway through services and programs. For instance, a community development specialist signs a youth up for a leadership course at a neighbourhood centre. Afterward, if the youth says she loves drama, she’s connected with a theatre program. And so on. The specialist might even attend on the first day, to help read registration forms, offer payment guidance, or even provide bus tickets. “It’s about finding out what youth are interested in and passionate about, and connecting the dots,” says Beth King, Director of Development for the YMCA’s of Cambridge and Kitchener-Waterloo. To date, 53 youth have been engaged, and the community partners’ response has been overwhelmingly positive. King says she’s convinced the program will lead to long-term benefits, not only for the youth themselves, but the entire community. “When a person has a sense of belonging, they’re able to tap into the other things that make them successful,” she explains. “When they can achieve their goals, they can reach their potential.”

Corrie-ann Snow experienced such a turning point in 2004 when her Outreach Worker suggested she attend Single Mom’s Camp to give her a break from her constant stress, and for her three kids (ages 1, 7 and 9) to have a rare summer holiday. “Single Mom’s Camp was an oasis,” says Corrie-ann now. While she connected with some 15 other moms during Mom’s Focus Sessions, a speaker series, plus pampering with massage, her kids blissed out on old fashioned camp fare. There was swimming, canoeing and archery led by positive role models—many male, something absent from many of the kids’ lives. Family Time brings everyone together for campfires, talent show and meals. “You can get pretty isolated. It’s amazing to share struggles and strategies with other moms in a positive space,” says Corrie-ann. Inspired by so many strong women over five summers, Corrie-ann enrolled in school to become a support worker for lower income-families. “Now I refer my clients back to
the camp.” And two of Corrie-ann’s kids worked as counselors themselves before entering college. A family history of abandonment, foster care and street life was broken. “I learned how to take the reigns of my own life, to move above my circumstances and to make different choices.” In 2015, Corrie-ann was invited back to share her own inspirational journey. “As I spoke to the moms about the ripple effect—how one positive choice can lead to another—a participant stood up to share.” Joanne, who had been quiet all week and had changed her mind last minute to attend, shared stories of being bullied at school. But, in Grade 4, there was one girl who stood up for her, a kindness she never forgot. That girl was Corrie-ann. “Right then, I recognized her!” says Corrie-ann. “We were both living a misery back then. Seeing her here, knowing that I made a difference in her life back then and now is such a gift.”

Donations:
Operations:
Donations are received from individuals, corporations, other charitable organizations and government. Donors may contribute to endowed funds (funds that are held permanently or for a specified period of time, usually 10 years), funds for distribution (funds that are held for granting usually within two years), or to the operations or programs of The KWCF. We are pleased to report that annual donations for 2 015 exceeded $3.4M.
Operating costs are funded primarily by fees levied on assets under management. However, The Foundation also received grants and sponsorship funding for program related activities.

Granting:
f i n a n c i a l
Our endowed fund granting trend over the past six years has resulted in small annual increases despite the market downturn in 2011. This was due to the establishment, several years ago of Stabilization Reserves for our funds to preserve past year’s earnings for future granting requirements. In 2015, 100% of Community Grants were able to be directed to the priority area as identified in the Vital Signs Priority Report: Belonging.
