BOARD CHAIR AND CEO MESSAGE We Build. We Invest. We Lead. Over the last 28 years The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation (The KWCF) has worked, advocated and collaborated, all for the betterment of our community. We take our commitment to making a lasting difference to heart. It is at the core of everything we do. Through building endowment, knowledge, and relationships, we have taken steps to ensure that the community is supported for years to come. By investing in local organizations, we focus on key issue areas and programs that need the most support. With our leadership we bring together those individuals who have the capacity and desire to make that lasting impact, now and in the future. 2011 was a year of partnerships, collaborations, and firsts. We granted over $2.1 million to 193 charitable organizations and once again gifts are up significantly over 2010, reaching approximately $2.07 million. Some of these exciting opportunities are profiled in the following pages. The KWCF Board of Directors has also been hard at work on a new strategic direction for the Foundation. Focus groups comprised of local community leaders were brought together to provide insight and input into a new strategic plan for The KWCF. Other exciting things are underway as a result of work done by The KWCF leadership, including the exploration of the opportunities around mission-related investing. More information will be shared on this and on the new strategic focus for the Foundation, so please stay tuned! Thank you to our partners, volunteers, and sponsors, without whom none of our successes would be possible. Your belief in our vision and commitment to The KWCF does not go unnoticed and is truly appreciated. As always, your dedication to our community goes unmatched, and we look forward to continuing our work together over the coming year.

A NEW HOME FOR YOUR COMMUNITY FOUNDATION On August 30th 2011, The KWCF opened its doors once again in the City of Kitchener. The move was part of a collaboration between three local non-profit organizations that have come together to share a common space. The KWCF, Junior Achievement (JA) of Waterloo Region, and the Downtown Kitchener Business Improvement Area (BIA) were all in need of new office space, and with a common goal in mind, moved into the newly renovated space at 29 King Street East in Kitchener late last summer. A number of studies have shown that collaboration in the non-profit world has great beneficial effect. The three organizations share this sentiment. “We’re thrilled about this partnership,” shares Rosemary Smith, CEO of The KWCF. “As a funder, we encourage our grant recipients to collaborate. We are demonstrating that we practice what we preach – that we’re always looking for opportunities to partner with others to leverage our resources for more impact.” Mark Garner, Executive Director of the Downtown Kitchener BIA couldn’t agree more. “This is another great moment for Downtown Kitchener as we have brought together like-minded organizations for the betterment of our community. Not only will we be sharing office space and administrative costs helping the operational aspects of our organizations, but we will ultimately be opening the door to partner on new and exciting initiatives.”
“Not only have we found great partners in the Foundation and Downtown Kitchener BIA, but we are now more central to the schools that we service in the Region making us more accessible to our students and our volunteers. Under these new and exciting circumstances, it’s great to be back!” The KWCF echoes that sentiment. The Foundation initially held an office in Kitchener before moving to Waterloo in 1994. With the generous support of the Marsland Family, the community foundation held its offices in UpTown Waterloo for over 17 years. The need for growth, the opportunity to partner with two great organizations like the BIA and JA, and the chance get closer to the organizations that it supports, made the decision to move back to Kitchener an easy one. “We are delighted to be back in Kitchener; not only because we’re reaching back to our roots, but because we’re more closely linked to those local organizations that make our community a great place to live, work, grow, and raise a family.” adds Smith.
JA President and CEO Aubrey Walters notes that JA is happy to be returning to Downtown Kitchener after a nine year absence.

OUR VOLUNTEERS ARE OUR MOST IMPORTANT ASSETS The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation works with many volunteers who give generously of their time and expertise. Their commitment and wisdom greatly influence the work that we do, and ensure that we remain in touch with the community we serve. “Volunteerism is the voice of the people put into action. These actions shape and mold the present into a future of which we can all be proud.” ~ Helen Dyer 2011 KWCF Board of Directors Shown (left to right) are: Deborah Currie, Edward D’Agostino, Eric Strassburger, Lynne Short, Roger Farwell, Michael Murray, Jacqui Murphy, Dave Jaworsky, David Brenneman, and Hulene Montgomery Front Row: Greg Barratt, Vivian Zochowski, and Rosemary Smith Missing: David Calder and Michael Klopchic 4
“Volunteering with The KWCF has enabled me to make deeper connections with our community and witness the incredible work of our local charities and non-profits. As an empowered volunteer, I have learned and experienced the value of collaborative leadership in an innovative and diverse community.” Carolyn Fitton, Community Fund Grants Committee Member. “My volunteer work with The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation began in 2007. Since then, it has been amazing to see the Foundation grow alongside our community. Even during uncertain and volatile times, this organization continues to Build, Invest, and Lead. I feel honoured to help The KWCF fulfill its mission: to improve the quality of life in Kitchener-Waterloo and area, now and for generations to come.” Eric Strassburger, Board Member and Chair of the Investment Committee

KEEPING UP TRADITION One of the things Kathleen Bissett remembers fondly about her parents, Constance and Frederick Landmann, was their dedication to philanthropy. “Each year, they allocated $1000 to be donated to our charity of choice,” recalls Kathleen. It was that inherent philosophy to give back to their local community that drove Frederick and Constance to establish the Landmann Family Fund with the Vermont Community Foundation. Having moved to Vermont from New York City, they found themselves at home, wanting to make roots and make a difference now, and for years to come. With Frederick passing in 2003 and Constance in 2011, both Kathleen and her sister Meryl wanted to continue the tradition that their parents had started. Kathleen, having long since moved to Waterloo Region, wanted to find a way to honour her parents, while supporting her local community. Kathleen and her husband Gerald soon discovered that foundations based in the United States are unable to grant to Canadian charitable organizations. “We are fortunate to have the opportunity to give “There was just no way around it,” commented Kathleen, back to the community that has given us so much, “the Vermont Community Foundation worked through and carry on the tradition started by my parents each scenario, but there was just no option available to us all those years ago.” to grant to our local community through a US Foundation.” The KWCF was contacted to act as the recipient of a donation to establish a Landmann Family Fund locally. After months of communications with the Vermont Community Foundation, the Bissett’s were finally able to realize their parents’ dream, here in KW. Kathleen and Gerald plan to focus their support in the areas of arts and culture, education, and health and wellness. “We’re looking forward to working with The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation to support the causes that mean the most to us,” adds Kathleen.

PRESERVING OUR RIVER People associate the Grand River with calm, serenity, and a spot to relax or get a break from a long day at work. Local residents visit the river to kayak, canoe, fish, or even to hike along its shores. The Grand River Conservation Authority prides itself as an organization that works for the river, but also for the community. They manage water and other natural resources on behalf of 39 municipalities and close to one million residents. The Grand River Conservation Foundation’s (GRCF) main area of focus is volunteer and fund development for priority projects of the Grand River Conservation Authority. Those high priority conservation projects make the greatest impact on the health and preservation of the river, and in turn, help to create a healthy community. In an effort to harness new opportunities to highlight the important work they do, they connected with The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation, to establish The Grand River Conservation Fund, a charitable organization endowment fund held at The KWCF. “What’s great about the Grand River is that there are many organizations that are working to preserve, protect and conserve it,” says Sara Wilbur, Executive Director of the GRCF. “Hopefully this will provide us with some additional opportunities to partner with those organizations for the greater good of the Grand River watershed while funding high priority conservation projects.” What first sparked the conversation between the two organizations was the fact that the GRCF also has a volunteer connection to the Foundation. Both Sara and the GRCF’s Vice-Chair, Doug Brock are KWCF volunteers. “Having that type of relationship, and understanding of The KWCF, made choosing the community foundation to hold our fund an easy one,” explains Sara. “The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation is pivotal for the community, and the GRCF is honoured to work with them.”

We evaluate all aspects of community well-being – including social services, education, the environment, health care, youth, seniors, and the arts. We can help you learn more about local organizations and programs that make a difference in areas you care about most. We leverage investments of dollars, knowledge, and relationships to support innovative projects and initiatives that help our community. We gather information and track the many local agencies and programs working for our community. Based on this information, we can make grants and direct resources to the most appropriate areas. GOOD SPORT CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE True Sport is an exciting movement sweeping across our country. Communities, groups, teams, and individuals from coast to coast are joining forces to ensure that sport of all levels is providing a positive, meaningful, and enriching experience for all who participate. “Community sport inspires friendship, learning, health, and personal growth,” shares Rosemary Smith, CEO of The KWCF. “These traits are strong influencers of a vital community, which is at the root of the Foundation’s work.” This year the True Sport Foundation, with support from the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation, began a partnership with four community foundations across Canada to transform lives and communities through sport. The KWCF was one of those community foundations. Joined by the City of Waterloo, sports-related projects in Waterloo Region were supported through the Waterloo Region True Sport Grants Program. Applications for this first pilot program closed in June of 2011. Grants totaling $42,500 were awarded this past summer by a six-person committee made up of leaders in the local sports sector. There was great demand for this initiative, with over $125,000 in requests received. When asked to participate as a member of the community-based grants panel, Jodi Murray, a Professor with Recreation and Leisure Services at Conestoga College, jumped at the chance. “The program provided the spark for leaders from around the Region to collaborate and dream about possibilities for youth leadership, personal growth, new partnerships, and friendships through sport initiatives,” explains Murray. “It was a great experience to be part of this process,” notes Frank Prospero, President of the Williamsburg Community Association. The Williamsburg area of Kitchener received two Waterloo Region True Sport grants. “For organizations to come together for the good of sport is fantastic. These grants will have an impact on how we engage our young people in the diversity of sport.” 13

COLLABORATING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT… AND THE COMMUNITY Some may think that climate change is a global issue – something handled by our federal government. However, it is widely recognized that local communities have a unique and important role to play toward helping Canada meet its climate change and clean air objectives. The Waterloo Region Green Solutions (REEP), Sustainable Waterloo, and the Regional Municipality of Waterloo have formed a collaboration to develop a communitywide greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory and action plan for Waterloo Region. This initiative, called The Climate Collaborative, will help strengthen the capacity of our community to pursue actions towards climate protection. In 2011, The Climate Collaborative needed ways to support implementation of the plan to the public, and reached out to The KWCF for funding. “The KWCF was a big supporter of the collaborative approach we were taking,” shares Sarah Brown, Project Manager for the Climate Collaborative. “They could see the impact of the work we wanted to do, and saw merit in capitalizing on the resources, skills, and strengths of the three organizations. Now we’re able to focus on what we do best without having to worry about the financial burden, thanks to the Foundation.” Sarah spends her time between the three organizations. She oversees not only the GHG inventory, but is also working on plans to share this important information with the community with the hopes of encouraging everyone to take action and reduce their carbon footprint. “The Climate Collaboration is something that the Foundation supports, not only because of the work they are doing for the community, but for how they’re working together to do it,” comments KWCF CEO Rosemary Smith. “From environmental protection to community health to sustaining economic growth, the work of this collaboration will help create a long-term vision for decreasing the carbon footprint of our community.”

The KWCF connects and collaborates – bringing people together to address key community issues. As a community leader, we play a key role in addressing community needs, now and in the future. We act as a community catalyst. Because community foundations support all kinds of charities, we are well positioned to bring people and organizations together to address local issues and opportunities. Through programs and initiatives like Waterloo Region’s Vital Signs®, we take a long-term view of the community, to help focus on and support high impact opportunities. We are governed by leaders, and have volunteers with strong ties to our community. They offer their expertise and leadership to address the needs of their community. They build networks. They collaborate. And they seek out the most innovative and effective programs and organizations in your community. Helping to create a community rooted in volunteerism, philanthropy, and caring for one another is a priority for The KWCF. As a result, initiatives such as Random Act of Kindness Day® have come to life to re-connect us to our neighbours, co-workers, and friends and demonstrate first-hand the importance of having an empathetic and caring community.

THE NEXT GENERATION OF PHILANTHROPIC LEADERSHIP Engage! KW was first introduced in 2006 as a program to raise awareness on community issues and provide information about potential philanthropy. The KWCF never imagined then how much promise and impact the program could have. Now, in its second year of a new vision, Engage! KW has developed into an initiative with over 60 dynamic community leaders who have participated to date. When the time came to plan the second year of programming,The KWCF reached out to the 2010 alumni, and was overwhelmed by the response. Close to half of the previous year’s participants stepped up to form the 2011 Engage! KW Committee. “The feedback we received at the end of the program’s first year was amazing. We knew that the new format was a hit, that it was valued by the participants, and that they were already talking about the program with their networks,” notes Foundation CEO Rosemary Smith.“What we didn’t realize was how many wanted to take Engage! to the next level in 2011.” One such alumni is Russell Wong. Russ eagerly stepped into the role of Chair of the Engage! KW Committee and is an advocate for Engage! KW. He believes in what the program sets out to do for local leaders.“We’re often inspired by people doing great things in other parts of the world. Through Engage! we get to meet people doing amazing things in our own community and find ways to work with them. If that’s not inspiring, I don’t know what is.” The Engage! KW Committee, with support of KWCF Staff, reviews each of the program’s seven sessions individually and as a whole ensuring that participants are getting the maximum value of their time. “Working with the volunteer leadership team this year has been an eye-opening experience for everyone involved,” comments Smith. “It has been amazing to see real leadership in action, working and learning together for the betterment of our To learn more about the community and its future leaders.” Engage! RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS DAY® Hold the door open for someone. Empty the dishwasher at home. Let the person behind you in line go in front. Make a new friend. In times where we are all so busy – with work, family, and friends – it is far too easy to overlook these small acts as we juggle our busy days. Random Act of Kindness Day® (RAK Day) is a reminder for us to take the time to be nice to each other, not to receive anything in return, but because it’s just the right thing to do. With the support of dedicated volunteers, RAK Day in 2011 welcomed new friends and experienced growth, both locally and nationally. Some of those new friends included over 26 communities across Canada that participated in RAK Day, including our first out of province community – Banff, Alberta. Plans are already underway to reach farther across our great country in 2012. Locally, we welcomed a new Kindness Ambassador to our team. Without speaking, Kaptain Kindness energized the crowd of over 250 volunteers and community members to kick off RAK Day at Conestoga Mall on November 4th. Kaptain Kindness was also on hand afterwards to cheer on the over 80 “Kindness Krews” that once again performed kind acts around our community. Woolwich Township also got in on the fun by hosting their very own kick-off event on November 3rd at the Dan Snyder Memorial Arena. Woolwich Township has become one of RAK Day’s biggest supporters locally, and the entire township has embraced the spirit of the day. David Brenneman, CAO for Woolwich Township, was not surprised that RAK Day took off in his community. “Volunteerism and the ‘pay it forward’ philosophy have always been integral parts of the culture in Woolwich Township.”

WATERLOO REGION’S VITAL SIGNS® – A RENEWED FOCUS “Vital Signs® is a tool for community understanding, discussion, reflection, and change,” shares Rosemary Smith, CEO of The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation. In 2011, The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation and the Cambridge & North Dumfries Community Foundation performed an in-depth evaluation on how the community is using the report and review what format the report will use in the future. It was revealed that many of our community leaders and local organizations utilize Waterloo Region’s Vital Signs® everyday. Use of the report ranges from aligning agency programs – utilizing the information as evidence during the grant-writing process – to strategic planning. Based on the feedback received, and the changes made to the census, The Foundations have determined that adjustments are required in the presention to the community. Moving into 2012, we will be delving deeper into the four priority areas identified in the 2010 report – Belonging & Leadership, Arts & Culture, Getting Started, and Health & Wellness. While all 11 areas are significant, it is important to understand that these four areas face the most concern at this time. With this refined focus, the foundations will use recent local data and community experts to help better understand current priorities. As a community, we are then able to devote time and energy to these areas in order to ensure that Kitchener-Waterloo and area is a healthy, vital place to live, work, play, and raise a family. The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation is as committed as ever to supporting local organizations and using Waterloo Region’s Vital Signs® as a reference point for local community organizations and leaders.

A VITAL CHANGE – A CONDUIT FOR STORYTELLING They say that pictures say a thousand words. But when it comes to storytelling, a video trumps them all. The KWCF took this message to heart when looking to create an online tool for non-profits to share their stories in an innovative way. Building on the work of Waterloo Region’s Vital Signs®, this philanthropic resource will allow organizations to showcase the programs that need the most support via storytelling. “The online tool will be a resource,” shares Rosemary Smith, CEO of The KWCF. “It will act as a conduit between non-profits and those of us looking for new and exciting ways to spend our time, talent, or treasure in our community.” But how will these organizations begin to start to tell these stories of the amazing work they do everyday in our community? Enter Capacity Waterloo Region. Capacity Waterloo Region (CWR) is a firm believer that impactful storytelling Is the most powerful method of reaching out to the community. The KWCF shares that vision, and is collaborating with CWR to facilitate a series of storytelling sessions led by storytelling guru Andy Goodman. Andy Goodman is a nationally recognized author, speaker, and consultant in the field of public interest communications, but is best known for his speeches and workshops on storytelling, and presentations. The KWCF will work with local non-profits that have participated in these sessions and begin to develop other key skills, such as storyboarding and video editing, to capture their unique stories on film. These videos, along with photos and a snapshot of the organization, will become a part of the online resource centre. “We’re delighted to support and partner with Capacity Waterloo Region in their story telling initiative, and excited to see what amazing stories our local organizations have to share with us” shares Smith.

*These grants are provided in partnership with United Way of K-W as a way to help new Canadian groups in KW build their sense of community and help them integrate into Canadian life. They are typically grassroots groups of people who have come together to address a need in their ethnic community. Normally, new Canadian groups are not registered charities, thus, they are required to partner with a registered charitable organization such as K-W Counselling, Mosaic Counselling, or K-W Multicultural Centre in order to receive a grant.

The Committee reviews the target investment portfolio mix regularly and controls allocations to each asset class using the following asset-mix targets: Investment Asset Mix Targets for Investment Portfolio, December, 2011

The KWCF uses a ‘specialty’ investment management structure that assigns asset class responsibility to different investment managers. An Investment Committee with senior level investment management expertise reviews performance using a benchmark performance measurement system. In 2011, the Committee added further diversification to the portfolio by adding a second Canadian Equity Manager: Connor Clark and Lunn.
• Manage the assets in the investment portfolio to achieve a total rate of return over the longer term that allows the organization to cover grant obligations and operation expenses, and to • Protect the purchasing power of the capital of the Fund in “real” terms (e.g. compensate for inflation).
Donations:
Granting:
Donations are received from individuals, corporations, other charitable organizations, and government. Donors may contribute to endowed funds (funds that are held permanently or for a specified period of time, usually 10 years), funds for distribution (funds that are held for granting usually within two years), or to the operations or programs of The KWCF. We are pleased to report that annual donations over the past five years have increased by over 200%.
Our granting trend over the past six years has remained relatively stable despite the market downturn in 2007/2008. This was due to the establishment several years ago of a Community Fund Grant Stabilization Reserve and a Community Fund Strategic Granting Reserve to preserve past year’s earnings for future granting requirements. In 2008, The KWCF used $465,000 from these reserves and $310,000 in 2009 to grant to the community. At the end of 2011, these reserves totaled $592,458. Operations: Operating costs are funded primarily by fees levied on assets under management. However, The Foundation also received grants and sponsorship funding for program related activities. In addition, The KWCF has established an Accumulated Operating Reserve to help ensure future viability of The Foundation.
