pend an afternoon with Steve and Leigh Sharps at their Ashland property and you will come away with a dizzying array of inspirational decorating ideas, a good dash of history, a new knowledge of all sorts of wood … and an in-depth look at how an extended family lives together, with an emphasis on barn-to-home conversions. Leigh and Steve transformed an old barn into a home some years ago. It is located just off Route 3 near the Holderness-Ashland town line, which means many people have seen it when driving that road. Steve and other family

members run Sharps Lumber, which provides lumber, unique custom furniture, and wood flooring. Leigh and Steve seem to do it all with the help of their three adult children: Jamie, who is a filmmaker (www.sharpsfilms.com) and often helps Steve in the logging business; Kara, whose husband, Sean O’Leary, runs a sawmill on the property; and Kelly, who lives just a few miles away and is converting an old house. Over the years, the family property has evolved. The first barn the family lived in is now Jamie’s home. A second barn built by Steve to house farm animals was converted into a home when daughter Kara married and started a family. Steve and Leigh had a lot of room to build themselves a new home, with about 100 acres of property from which to choose. Before moving out of the original converted barn that had been their home for many years, Leigh and Steve began to build a new home on their extensive property. The home just happens to be situated at the top of a mountain, with great views. “This house started as a hobby project for Jamie and me,” Steve explains while pointing to the huge stones that line the basement foundation of the Adirondack-style home he shares with Leigh. “We did the stonework over the course of two years. We used the resources available on the property so we would not have a lot of expense.” The first level and basement was built with timber cut by chainsaw. offer examples of fine finished furniture made with Sharps’ various types of wood. As with everything else Steve and Leigh set out to do, they rolled with it and embraced a new lifestyle as the house evolved. The porch offers incredible views of neighboring mountains and, at various times of the year, Squam Lake at the foot of the property. Leigh has used her creative skills to put in a vegetable garden and beautiful flowerbeds around the home. Entering the house, the first floor is open-concept with a spacious kitchen/ dining room area on one side and a living room on the other. It’s difficult to know where to look first: To the left, the kitchen draws one in with the beautiful examples of cabinetry, chairs, and table and the various examples of wood floors underfoot, or the highlight of the kitchen, the handmade cabinets. “The kitchen was built by ScribeRight, owned by our friend Dan Ciarleglio,” Steve says. One unique feature among many in the home is the moose antler banister. “It is made of antlers and also of a large piece of wood. We were logging a property and I noticed a great piece of wood with unique burls. I was drawn to it and thought it would make a great banister. The antlers were gathered on our snowmobiling trips in northern New Hampshire,” Steve explains. The banister featuers the moose antlers, interwoven to create a solid structure using the giant piece of wood with mammoth burls. It is a beautiful conversation piece and certainly not something one would see in just any house. The home is a conglomeration of unique construction and styles with contributions from family and business associates and friends. The floors are made of various woods and serve as examples of the lumber available at Sharps Lumber. Bird’s Eye Maple, Pine, Black Walnut, and others were all sawn, dried, and milled on the property. “I guess you could say I am addicted to wood. As a kid I cut lumber with my Dad using a crosscut saw,” Steve adds. Leigh laughs and nods in agreement. But she, too, is a more-than-willing partner in Steve’s many projects. Each room in their unique home has its

own story, such as the huge stone fireplace in the living room crafted by local mason Ed Corrigan and the Rattlesnake Island/lake mural on a nearby wall painted by local artist Eliza King. When it came to purchasing lighting and doors for the home, Leigh’s passion for antiques and repurposing old things came into play. “We got most of the home’s lighting fixtures at Alexandria Lamp Shop,” she says. “We always liked antique lighting and it works well in this house.” Interior doors are repurposed and many came from a salvage company. The doors are another conversation piece, featuring such fun touches as stained glass. One even has an old doorbell still attached. The construction of the unique home is but part of the story of the Sharps family. Barns have played a big part in the lives of the entire family for many

years. Walking the property, which includes a number of historic structures, Leigh explains, “I always wanted to turn a barn into a house. It was a dream of mine years ago. I also wanted to live by a lake.” When their children were little, Leigh and Steve were living on an old farm in Sanbornton. It was a good life but the property was remotely located. With a growing family, the couple wanted easier access to the school system, knowing their children would be involved in after-school activities in the years ahead. Leigh, a writer for a local newspaper, was driving the finished pages to the printer in Plymouth and saw a for sale sign by an old barn in Ashland. Ironically, Steve saw the same listing in a real estate magazine the same day. Intrigued, the family set off to tour the property on a snowy winter’s day. What they saw would have discouraged less visionary potential buyers. The

fields that now surround the property were not there; instead, it was densely forested. Further discouraging was the circa 1870s barn in extremely poor condition. The roof was caving in and it would not have been long before the entire structure tumbled in if not for its amazing rescue by the Sharps family. Friends and family told Leigh and Steve they were crazy to buy such a place but Steve wanted to the land for its virgin timber, which he could sell. Leigh was on board because of her plans to finally turn a barn into a livable home. “We worked on the barn 16 hours a day from April through June and then we moved in,” she recalls. They also hired a company to help sheetrock, which was no small task in an old barn with soaring walls that meet a very tall ceiling. A Russian fireplace is the only heat in the house and, while others expressed doubt that it would heat the lofty barn space, it indeed keeps the place very warm all winter long. Both Steve and Leigh say they miss the toasty warmth from the Russian fireplace, although their new home also has good heat. Unique home features seem to be what Leigh and Steve love, and they got it all in the barn. Leigh points to a huge wooden wheel suspended from the barn’s ceiling. It is known as a slaughter wheel and was once used in the barn when a long-ago farmer butchered cattle. Today, son Jamie lives in the barn home while daughter Kara and her husband reside right up the hill (all on the Sharps’ property) in a pretty barn that also was converted into a home. The original purpose of Kara’s barn home was as a place for farm animals. Having turned one barn into a home, Steve and Leigh knew they could convert the second barn into a home for Kara when she married. Today, the newer barn home sports a charming cupola and has the repurposed charm of all others structures on the Sharps’ property. The sawmill sits directly across from Kara’s barn home and makes for a very quick commute for her husband, Sean, who runs the mill. (Steve says that many New Hampshire sawmills are no longer in operation and it seemed advantageous to put in their own sawmill for cutting timber.) of the Sharps’ business and family compound is the split rail fence and the huge burl (Leigh laughingly says the burl looks like a wooden sculpture of a certain part of the human body!). Near the fence, a charming, tall old building houses lumber and is used for drying wood. The structure was once a church/old meetinghouse on Squam Lake and was relocated to the Sharps property and retains its circa 1700s charm. A large barn sits nearby and was part of the original Batchelder House, once an inn for wealthy summer tourists. Today it is a shop for the Sharps’ wood business. With the lumber business providing high-quality woods at affordable prices, as well as unique custom furniture and top notch wood flooring, all from their Ashland family location, it would seem all of their goals have been met. (Leigh, by the way, got her wish of living by a lake because they own and spend a lot of time at their lakefront area right across the road.) When asked what their future plans are, Leigh again laughs. “I wanted to live in a barn. We did it. I wanted to live by the lake. We have that. we might want to fix up.…” Her voice trails off as she thinks of the many houses they could build or remodel and all the possibilities out there. Steve will continue with the family’s logging business that he has run for more than 30 years. Leigh remains a willing partner in whatever project her husband may dream up. Time and the passing of years have not stopped their energetic creativity and their entrepreneurial spirits. “My son, Jamie, is a local filmmaker. He and I are starting a new project called ‘Haunted New England’,” Leigh says with a gleam in her eye. “And there are all my other projects.” She is referring, of course, to her passion for collecting antiques and her love for turning old objects into unique and new things, such as the old coffee pot that now hangs from her porch and serves as a wind chime, complete with old silverware as chimes. Having her children and grandchildren living so close by is a pleasure for Steve and Leigh. With projects to dream up and grandchildren to spoil, there is no stopping the couple that is always busy with something new. No View Tax For This Home Those searching for a home with a view may well overlook one option that is within reach: life on a houseboat. “Houseboats are a hidden treasure,” affirms Terry Thomason who, with his wife, Nancy, have spent portions of many a summer living on the water. Standing on the upper helm of their 47-foot houseboat, T House, Terry indicates the panoramic view of the lake and mountains from their slip at Mountain View Yacht Club in Gilford. “You couldn’t pay for this view,” he says admiringly. Nancy, seated in the large salon they had custom-built for this, their fifth houseboat, agrees with her husband when he says one’s blood pressure goes down when stepping aboard. “This is easy living,” she says. “When you come out here, there’s something about being on the water that causes all cares to fall away.” The T House is being offered for sale because, now in their eighties, the Thomasons find they are not making use of the boat as much as they used to. That is largely due to their enthusiasm for the Meredith Bay Colony Club, where they reside when not on the boat. Meredith Bay offers all the amenities — including a dining room — that they could ask for, and they enjoy the time spent there almost as much as being on the water. The other consideration is Terry’s bad heart. He said that, although the

houseboat has an electric winch to raise the heavy anchor, he doesn’t venture out on the lake unless there are younger people aboard, just in case there is a power failure. “I could never lift that anchor myself today,” Terry said. “Someone who’s 45 or 50 wouldn’t have a problem; I didn’t have a problem when I was younger.” Even with the houseboat docked, they are able to enjoy the time spent aboard the Gibson craft. “It’s more of a condo on the lake than a boat that goes out every year,” Nancy said. “When we do go out, it is usually to anchor between Mark and Timber Island.”

Terry noted that the generator enables them to anchor out on the water and still have air conditioning and power to cook a meal. The last three houseboats they owned have been Gibsons and the T House, which they purchased new in the fall of 2002, was customized for their tastes after having owned four previous houseboats. In addition to the larger salon, which is about 18 feet long, they ordered the electric winch with which they can raise the anchor without leaving the helm. The sofa in the salon is a pull-out, able to sleep two. With the stateroom and its island bed, as well as another cabin with two double beds, the houseboat sleeps eight in comfort. The boat also has two heads, each with a shower. The galley features lots of storage compartments as well as a three-burner stove with oven and a sink, and there also is a microwave for quick heating. Beneath the salon is an extensive crawl space for storage, extending all the way from the galley to the lower cabin. There is a flying bridge with bench and individual seats, and a three-level deck at the back of the boat, providing plenty of space for party guests. And,

Terry notes, they have been able to hold business meetings with eight to 10 people in the salon. In fact, he said, while working on institutional investments in Connecticut, he persuaded his boss to allow him to live in New Hampshire and he equipped his houseboat so he could

sit at anchor and conduct business while on the water. As Terry tells it, he “met New Hampshire via Winnipesaukee” in 1961 when he came to the lake from Massachusetts and stayed at the former Chanticleer Inn Cabins off Route 11. Many young families spent time at those cabins and Terry recalls thinking that the lake would be a perfect place for a houseboat. That led to their buying their first, a 24-foot camper-cruiser. Once they owned one houseboat, they were hooked, later exchanging their 24-footer for a 34-foot Chris-Craft. When a storage facility at the former Fagan’s Marine collapsed in 1982, their 34-footer was among the casualties, and they bought their first Gibson, a 36-footer. That was replaced by a 44-footer, then their current houseboat. “We went to Goodletsville, which was next to Memphis, where they built this boat,” Terry recalled. As “confirmed houseboaters” the Thomasons did not have any trouble spending two entire summers on the water when they were between houses on land. They have found the Mountain View Yacht Club to be the perfect location, providing them with cable connections for television and computers, pump-out facilities, and other amenities. “It’s great for entertaining,” Nancy says. “You can have people on several levels, so it doesn’t feel crowded.” And, she added, there is plenty of storage space for additional gear. Terry noted that, unlike many boats, a houseboat does not require acrobatics or mountain-climbing skills to get around. There is a walkway with rail around the entire boat and stairs for easy access between levels. Speaking of maneuverability and fuel economy, Terry says both are surprisingly good. “If there are 20-knot winds, you don’t pull out,” he said, “but, normally, you can turn this around on a dime.” After three houseboats with single engines, they graduated to models with twin engines which Terry says are “infinitely more easy to operate”. Although he expected higher fuel bills with the twin engines, he has found that not to be the case, due to more economical use of power and to more efficient engines. “What has continued to surprise me is the relatively small amount of fuel it uses,” he says. Although they have owned the houseboat for 11 years, it has recorded only 117 hours of running time, as they do not do a lot of cruising. “My idea of a perfect day is to anchor it, play cards, and swim. That’s near perfection,” Terry says. “We have lived in finger docks, but this is the best location,” said Nancy of their current slip at B1. In putting their houseboat up for sale, they are offering to include “the best slip in the best yacht club on Lake Winnipesaukee” — or to sell the houseboat alone, if the buyer intends to dock it elsewhere. Mural Of The Big Lake Transforms Back Bay Home By Thomas P. Caldwell Converting a kitchen into a dining room as part of a home renovation project, Linda and Dick DaBica found themselves with a dilemma: They had deprived themselves of a wonderful lake view. It was shortly after the DaBicas purchased their home on Bay Street, Wolfeboro — in part because it gave them a place from whence they could launch their boat for access to Rattlesnake Island, where they have had a cottage for 22 years — they built an addition to make the home more comfortable. In expanding the house, however, they created a solid wall between the old and the new portions of the home. “It made this a room without windows,” said Linda of the dining room. Then she had an inspiration. As a director of the NH Boat Museum, Linda had become familiar with the works of artist Peter Ferber who, since 1994 has painted the official poster for the New England Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society’s annual show. Peter also had directed the restoration of the mural on the front of the boat museum. The original mural, probably dating from the 1950s, had faded and Peter enlisted volunteers to freshen it up, offering advice and direction to those taking part in the restoration.

The DaBicas hired Peter to paint a 15-foot mural (with a 17-inch extension to the right of the door to the adjoining room) that would give them back their lake view. The 46-inch-high mural provides a sweeping view of Lake Winnipesaukee — including Rattlesnake Island — as seen from South Wolfeboro. Peter, who typically works with watercolor, said taking on the mural “definitely got me to take up oil painting”. He previously had worked with oils only in a single oil painting course he took while attending Principia College in St. Louis MO. “In teaching myself, I did a number of practice paintings and a few small ones that sold first, before doing the mural,” Peter recalls. Linda notes that Peter would collect samples of moss and tree bark and bring them to the house while working on the mural, in order to accurately match the colors and textures of the scenery. She brought out a piece of bark that she had saved from those sessions, holding it up against a tree on the right side of the mural to show how successfully Peter had reproduced its features. “He came one day a week, sometimes more, spending the whole day at work on the mural,” Linda recalls. The completed mural shows a scene in which the setting sun provides bright

colors at the left of the mural, highlighting the other objects in the painting. For the DaBicas, it is a scene that puts them back into the island frame of mind — and provides a treat for their dinner guests. “This was done about 10 years ago,” Linda says as she admires the painting. “It’s lovely, just wonderful. And we use the dining room a lot, so it’s not like it doesn’t get appreciated.” Other homeowners also appreciate the paintings of Peter Ferber, which add a touch of tranquility to the walls of their homes. Most of his works are watercolors, but he does do oils and acrylics, now that he has created works such as the Bay Street mural. “For Peter, it allowed him to stretch a little, and he did a beautiful job,” Linda said. “For us, it got us going on collecting White Mountain paintings which we have throughout our house.” She added that she and her husband have derived “an awful lot of pleasure” out of the mural. “I love the sun setting there.” Linda says they will miss the mural when they eventually move out of the house. “It stays with the house,” she said. However, when the time comes, they will have something else to take away. Peter also painted a Wolfeboro scene on a small, wooden stool that the DaBicas had. It features a view from the Back Bay to the Big Lake, with prominent buildings like Brewster Academy plainly visible.

Peter admits that he likes to experiment, and he has created some threedimensional works using paper cut-outs. He glues the paper together as a relief on a painted background. Still, it is his watercolors that prove to be the most popular, especially at the art shows he puts on twice a year at the Art Place in downtown Wolfeboro. (His most recent show opened Labor Day Weekend, running through Sept. 13.) The Art Place also offers limited-edition prints of his paintings, and many of them have found their way into homes across the country. Charity House To Benefit Children’s Auction Story and Photos By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper This year, a number of Lakes Region builders and volunteers will have Santa’s nod of approval when a very special project is completed. Indeed, Santa himself could not have used his Christmas magic to conjure up a more beautiful home than the one nearing completion in Laconia. That house is known as the 2013 Children’s Charity House. The home, when completed, will be listed on the popular Oct. 12-14 Parade of Homes event on Columbus Day Weekend. Those looking to buy a home or get home décor ideas are definitely in for a treat. The Lakes Region Builders & Remodelers Association (known as the LRBRA) is one of nine New Hampshire builder trade groups within the statewide Home Builders and Remodelers Association (HBRANH). Each year, the LRBRA organizes the New Hampshire Parade of Homes, featuring houses located throughout the state’s lakes and mountain regions, built by some of the best Lakes Region builders in the industry. Each house has some of the newest features and products, not to mention that all are decorated beautifully. This year, contractors, painters, decorators, and others are working long hours to complete the Children’s Charity House in time for the Parade of Homes to capture the widest real estate audience possible. Proceeds from the house, when sold, will go to benefit the 98.3 WLNH Children’s Auction. As many know, the auction takes place each year and is broadcast for a number of days on WLNH and Lakes Region Public Access Television with support from Metrocast Cablevision. Last year’s auction raised a staggering $416,500 through the sale of items and through donations. Proceeds support children in need in the area in a number of ways. Located at Windemere Ridge, 190 Turner Way in Laconia, the Children’s Charity House is a dramatic, 2,200 sq. ft. Craftsman-style bungalow home that

will be finished with the very finest materials and workmanship. Bedecked with color, flooring, artwork, and furniture by local professional interior decorators, the beautiful wooded property with mountain views will be skillfully landscaped by Belknap Landscape Co. Says lead interior decorator for the project Patti Phelps of All In The Details Interior Design, “The home is a modern interpretation of a Craftsman-style bungalow. It will have a lot of handmade woodwork and hardwood flooring.” Patti has clearly fallen in love with the home and the project. She is joined by three other Lakes Region decorator companies: Decorative Interiors, Sandra Curtis Designs, and Home Beautiful. “The home will be completed and fully staged for the Parade of Homes,” Patti explains. “Harris Furniture is generously providing the furniture for the staging. The designers chose a room they wanted to decorate and, as lead designer, I am taking the remaining rooms so that the entire house will be staged to give Parade of Home guests the full effect of the beautiful home for sale.” Custom-milled hardwood flooring by Hampshire Hardwoods will set the home apart, as will appliances from Baron’s Major Brands Appliances. Taking on such a project was no small task. The LRBRA has a history of giving to the Children’s Auction. Going back a few years to 2011, the Children’s Auction was celebrating its 30th anniversary and LRBRA accepted the challenge of creating a functional, custom-crafted TV production set with custom furniture for the auction. LRBRA member companies joined together to design, build, and deliver the furniture at no cost to the auction. LRBRA members in 2012 created a matching TV production set “surround” or backdrop. The LRBRA’s most intensive project to date for the Children’s Auction, the Children’s Charity House, is being designed, built, landscaped, and decorated by LRBRA member companies at minimal cost. Log & Timber Homes volunteered to serve as the general contractor on the project and has already donated more than a week’s worth of framing with his entire crew. “The crews have been working so hard,” Patti continues. “ReMax/Bayside is the realty company and their agent, Chris Kelley, is the listing agent. The price for the home will be set before the Parade of Homes and, when sold, the final sale price will be kept a secret until the Children’s Auction. Announcing the amount that will be donated to the auction from the Charity House sale will certainly be exciting!” Belknap Landscape Company will design and handle all outside grounds landscaping. Taking The Temperature Of Lakes Region Real Estate By Roy Sanborn Because I am a Realtor®, people often ask my opinion on where I would like to live in the Lakes Region. I reply, “That would be on Maui.” They usually stare blankly back and ask, “How’s the real estate market doing?” The answer to that is, “It’s okay, things are moving, but.” Some homeowners that are considering listing their property for sale are excited, as they have heard the news that the real estate market is heating up, prices are rising, and buyers are bidding for homes. The truth is that’s not happening around here. Real estate is a very local phenomenon and, while some markets are surging and prices are rising, that’s not the case in the Lakes

Region … yet. You have to remember that the numbers you hear on the news are usually national statistics. There are parts of the country that were far harder-hit in the housing collapse than we were. It is easy to have a big percentage increase in property values when homes were truly worth next to nothing in some parts of the country. The following charts will give you a comparison of average sales prices and the total number of sales for single-family residential homes over the 12 months ending July 31, 2013, compared to the same 12 months the year before.

If anything, the good news is that the total sales are up in both Belknap and Carroll counties for this time frame. Actually, that’s great news! We need to whittle down what is considered a very high inventory level of 15 months’ worth of homes to sell in Belknap County and 18 months’ worth in Carroll. A good, healthy housing market would be around six months’ supply. Prices are never going to rebound to any degree as long as there is an oversupply of homes on the market. That is supply-and-demand economics, plain and simple. As the charts show, must communities experienced more sales over the previous 12-month period, some stayed the same, and a handful had fewer sales; but, overall, there were solid 11 percent and 12 percent gains. In Belknap County, the chart shows that the average sale price rose from $247,556 to $264,839, an increase of seven percent. But that doesn’t necessarily mean your house is suddenly worth $20,000 more this year than last. I kind of wish it were so. But, remember those good old days? Do you remember what happened after seven or eight years of continually rising home values? I thought so…. The average sales prices shown reflects more of what is selling rather than a sudden increase in property values. It’s pretty easy to see that, when you look at the numbers for the individual communities, there are some pretty wild fluctuations. A look inside the numbers will show that 53 percent of the sales in Belknap County were under the $200,000 price point over the past 12-month period, compared to 60 percent for the period ending 7/31/12. On the other end of the scale, there were 20 sales over $1 million (three of which were over $3 million) for the period ending 7/31/13, compared to 15 sales over $1 million for the period ending 7/31/12. So the combination of fewer lowerpriced homes and more high-priced homes selling caused the sales average to come in a bit higher. Over in Carroll County, the average sales price dropped just a little, from $288,060 to $278,289 for the recent 12-month period. In Carroll County, the number of sales under $200,000 increased from 458 to 520 and the number of homes over $1 million dropped slightly, from 30 to 29. That explains the slight drop in average home sale prices.

So what’s this all mean? To me, it appears that, while home prices are not increasing, they do appear to be stabilizing. And they will probably remain stability for a while longer. It is going to take a while to reduce the glut of homes in the market. The increase in total home sales indicates that people might just be feeling a little more positive, confident, or optimistic. They want to purchase homes and they will, as long as they see value in what they buy. So the answer to the question of how the real estate market is doing is, “It’s okay, things are moving, but sellers have to be realistic on their asking price and buyers have to be realistic on their offers.” It’s just that simple: Be real and you’ll have a deal. in the colonial style. “We started the business in 1979. Before this, we had a place called Heritage Village on Route 3 in the Meredith-Weirs area,” says owner Bob Hood. “We ran the village in the 1960s into the 1970s. When we sold Heritage Village, we were looking for a new location that would allow us to run the business in our home.” Heritage Village focused on selling colonial-style items such as lighting and furniture from the early days of America. At that time — the early 1970s — Colonial décor was becoming quite popular, most likely due to the nation’s celebration of its bicentennial. Much focus was placed on colonial America, from Revolutionary heroes to the way early Americans lived and decorated their homes. It all seemed to come together when Bob and his wife, Marilyn, discovered eight beautiful acres of property on College Road. They built a New England center-chimney saltbox home and moved in with their children. “We opened R. Hood in our home in 1979,” Bob said. The idea from the first was to offer a showroom with fine reproduction

furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries and also to allow customers to stroll through chosen rooms of the Hood’s home where the family lived surrounded by colonial reproductions that are for sale. One enters R. Hood by a small breezeway attaching a large garage to the main house. From there, one enters the huge, beautiful kitchen with colonial décor. A large counter island space gives plenty of room for meal preparation and the kitchen opens onto the dining area with reproduction dining table and chairs from D. R. Dimes Furniture. A fireplace board (or fireboard) covers the fire opening and is decoratively painted in the Early American style. Many items such as the fireboard are for sale. “On the first floor, our personal items are mixed in with items for sale. People can see the furnishings in a home décor,” Bob says. How does a customer tell what is for sale and what isn’t? Bob laughs and says customers often ask to buy the Hood family’s personal antiques and other items, and that is why an attractive podium-style sign lists each item that is for

sale in the home. From the dining room picture window, customers are treated to a view of the mountains that is spectacular and must be particularly breathtaking in the foliage season. A mammoth lawn slopes down the hill and is surrounded by a stonewall that Bob has been working on for some years. “I started it the same day as 9/11 and I am over half-way finished. It’s quite a job!” he adds. The living room is a comfortable space with beautiful paintings and fine furniture. A small office nearby is a quiet spot for Bob to read and relax. On the upper level, two of the home’s bedrooms are decorated in a period style and offer reproduction antique furniture, carpets, and accessories. Although the height of popularity for the Colonial Williamsburg style of furnishings was in the 1980s, R. Hood continues to meet a need for the specialty market of customers who just love 18th and 19th century décor. “Cultural changes have definitely occurred,” Bob says. “Today the younger customers shop in a different manner, such as online. Ikea and modern décor stores are popular, but we do have loyal customers who prefer the colonial style.” Part of R. Hood’s appeal is the fact that customers can see what the furniture, carpets, curtains, and other objects will look like in actual rooms. Also, the fact that the furniture is all reproductions and solidly made is very appealing. “We have customers who plan a stop at R. Hood as part of their vacation trip. Many of our customers are from outside New Hampshire and other countries as well.” Clearly, there is still a desire for high-quality reproductions that are styled in the periods of the 18th and 19th centuries. The lower level of the home is where the R. Hood showrooms are located. Off a large showroom with a consultation table and many period pieces is the lighting room with specialty lighting of all sorts. As many people are aware, Habitat for Humanity is an international organization that helps to build homes for families that might not otherwise be able to afford one. Habitat relies on volunteer labor and donations, both material and financial. In a typical scenario, people interested in having a Habitat home apply through their local organization and, if approved, the applicants end up donating time to build their own home as well as helping to build others in the region. Habitat also provides no-interest financing to the applicant for the mortgage. One way that Habitat raises money to use in providing that financing for local building projects is through its ReStores. ReStores are an inexpensive resource for people looking to buy building materials, tools, building supplies, and appliances, and the inventory consists of donations from building contractors,

All material and appliance donations are reviewed by Habitat ReStore staff members before being accepted for sale at the ReStore, so the items at the ReStore tend to be either new or, if used, in good shape and working order. The ReStores do not accept donations of appliances that are older than five years or broken, nor do they accept paint, hazardous materials, or “soft furniture” such as couches or beds. The three ReStores currently located in New Hampshire are in Newington, Nashua, and Holderness. The Pemi-Valley Habitat for Humanity, which originally opened a ReStore in Ashland four years ago, recently relocated to a larger building in Holderness at the junction of routes 3 and 175. The building is leased for a nominal fee from local businessman and restaurateur Alex Ray of the Common Man Family of Restaurants, who is well-known for his support of charitable and community projects. I stopped in recently to check out the new store and one thing that I noticed

immediately was that it was clean, spacious, well-organized, and full of materials ready for sale. Business was brisk. Volunteer Patricia Wells, who was in charge of the counter, says that the new building gives Pemi-Valley Habitat a larger space for inventory and greater visibility. “We are already getting more street traffic,” she notes, adding that the new ReStore has also seen an increase the number of hours and days that it is open for business. Executive Director Brian McCarthy agrees. “We’ve only been open here for a couple of weeks, but we’ve already noticed a very strong increase in traffic and, in particular, in donations.” Inventory at the Holderness ReStore location includes chandeliers and other lighting fixtures, cabinets, kitchen and bathroom fixtures, sinks, windows, doors, furniture, gas and electric stoves, microwaves, air conditioners, shutters, bath and ceiling fans, nuts and bolts, fencing, tile, grout, tools, plumbing fixtures, roofing, lumber, insulation, flooring, trim, and more. While I was there, one man even brought in a wall-mounted gas heater. All items are offered for sale at

One added benefit of donating to a Habitat ReStore is that the organization can pick up items for you at your home if you are unable to bring them to the ReStore location. Each ReStore has its own policies about pick-ups, so it is best to check first. “It really depends on what it is,” says Brian. “We prefer that people bring their donations to the store but, depending on what it is, we will go in our truck to pick up donations, especially bigger items and things that are really in demand or high-quality.” Pemi-Valley Habitat for Humanity formed in 1985 and, since that time, volunteers have built 27 new homes throughout the greater Plymouth-Bristol region. The Pemi-Valley volunteers tend to work on an average of two homes per year. Of course, additional volunteers are always welcome, both at the construction sites and at the ReStore. “We’re close to completing our 28th home,” notes Brian. “We will frame and roof the final two homes in the four-home Hedstrom Way project [in Bristol] starting with our Women Build Weekend, Oct. 5 and 6. We will resume working on those homes in the spring.” The Women Build-a-Thon is a fundraising effort that seeks to involve women who want to volunteer to help build Habitat homes. The two days of construction in Ocrtober will run from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Breakfasts, lunches, and on-the-job training are included, and organizers also plan to invite several local and state women politicians and government officials to attend and lend a helping hand. No previous construction experience is necessary to participate; register by calling 603-536-1333 or by emailing pr@pemivalleyhabitat.org.
