Cozy Companion Pet Beds and Apparel in Moultonborough By Sarah Wright Deborah Joyce has always loved to sew, and years ago she was making and selling doll clothing at craft fairs when she adopted a tiny Chihuahua named Nina. Deborah wanted to get a coat to keep the dog warm, but she had trouble finding one that was small enough. Chihuahuas are so thin and have such little necks, that it was difficult to find anything that would be comfortable from any pet store. So Deborah made a sweater and a snowsuit for Nina, and soon people started asking her about the tiny winter wear. Her parents also had a small dog, so she made outfits for their dog, too. So many people asked about that dog’s coat that Deborah’s father began passing out her business cards. She decided to switch gears from doll clothing to dog clothing and 12 years later, she’s making hundreds of coats in 17 different sizes with 12 different styles in each size. Her pullover sweaters are made with a stretchable, non-pilling fleece, and they’re available in many colors and patterns like plaids and florals. The coats are offered in fleece and waterproof styles, and Deborah has made customized coats for dogs from two pounds all the way up to 150 pounds. Many of the adjustable coats are also reversible. A popular seller for Deborah is her blaze orange coat and safety vest complete with reflective tape, great for dogs during hunting season. The most challenging coat to make is one for a small dog, sized between one and two pounds. “The hardest part

is that the coat has to be really narrow, but still comfortable,” says Deborah. “I use Velcro for a snug fit.” Smaller dogs typically wear D-ring harnesses instead of collars, so Deborah adds a D-ring onto her small coats so that little dogs can easily be hooked up to a leash. (Coats for larger dogs have a buttonhole opening for the leash hookup.) For custom orders, Deborah needs measurements of the dog, including the length from neck to tail, the circumference of the dog’s neck, and the measurement around the mid-part of its belly. Customers should also tell Deborah the dog’s weight and breed. “I’ve made so many coats and sweaters that I’ve almost covered every dog breed,” says Deborah, “so if I know the breed, that helps me fit the dog.” She works very quickly, and can turn around a

coat order within 24 hours. Around the same time that Deborah started sewing coats for dogs, she began making “pet puffs,” or beds for dogs and cats. She also started making mats for use in cars or kennels, with special catnip mats for cats. Another great way to use the mat is at the end of a bed, for your pet to sleep on. Deborah does this for her cat, and it helps keep the bed linens clean. On her website, Deborah has so many colors and patterns available for the pet puffs and mats, that there’s certainly something for every décor. Popular whimsical patterns include paw prints, patchwork, or specific dog breed prints. She’s always on the lookout for new fabrics, and doesn’t miss a sale. Both the pet puffs and mats are machine washable and the removable cov-

ers are fastened with heavy-duty snaps, so the cover can be quickly washed by itself, when needed. The pet puffs are also made to provide comfort for your pet year-round, whether it’s warm or cool outside. “The pet puffs are fleece on one side, and cotton on the other,” Deborah explains. “The fleece side provides warmth in the colder months, while the cotton side is cooling in the summertime.” Pet puffs are available in sizes XS up to XXL, with the puffs for cats offered in sizes small, medium and large. Deborah currently has two cats and two dogs, and they all enjoy their pet puffs. The best way to see Deborah’s wonderful pet creations is to stop at one of her craft fair booths. She does a lot of fairs in the fall, since that’s when people are thinking of buying pet puffs and warm coats, either for their own pets, or as gifts for family and friends who have pets. She’ll be at the Belmont High School Fair (in Belmont, New Hampshire) on November 7 this year, but her other shows are farther away, because as Deborah puts it, “The pet puffs are so durable and long-lasting, that I’ve needed to expand out to other locations to reach new customers!” Customers can find pricing information and see what fabrics and styles are available by visiting www.cozycompanions.com. Lakes Region Conservation Trust Offers a Variety of Events The Lakes Region Conservation Trust (LRCT) has several events in the coming weeks including Guided Excursions, Programs, and Volunteer Work Days. LRCT will be offering many guided excursions throughout the rest of the season, including a family friendly walk at Knights Pond in Alton, a paddle on Lake Wicwas in Meredith, a hike at the newly acquired Sugarloaf Ridge in Alexandria, the very popular mushroom walk with Rick Van de Poll at Fogg Hill in Center Harbor, and a hike at Piper Mountain in Gilford. These excursions provide a great opportunity to learn about and explore LRCT’s conserved lands with knowledgeable guides. All LRCT guided excursions are free to all, but registration is required. Join LRCT on Fri., August 21 at 4 pm for their very first geocaching event held at the Castle in the Clouds Conservation Area in Moultonborough. Participants are invited to gather at the picnic tables at Shannon Pond for a meet and greet with fellow enthusiasts before heading out on the trails to look for several caches. Parking is available

at the hiker parking lot located at the top of Ossipee Park Road off Route 171. Fellow Geocachers will be there an hour before the event if anyone new to this hobby would like some tips on geocaching. New caches have been placed near Shannon Pond in anticipation of this event, but there are also plenty of “old” caches in the area. You might consider coming earlier in the day to find the ones that are farther up in the mountains. LRCT has conserved nearly 24,000 acres in the Lakes Region in over 130 properties since its founding in 1979. All of the work to conserve and steward these lands and over 90 miles of trails would not be possible without the help of LRCT’s many dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers. There are ways you can help; LRCT has periodic workdays on their lands and in their office. Zany Satire Next on Playhouse Stage A bank gets bombed, a suspect dies in custody, and the police inquiry turns into…a masterpiece of comedy? Nobel Prize-winning Italian playwright Dario Fo’s Accidental Death of an Anarchist takes to the stage at The Winnipesaukee Playhouse in Meredith through August 22. Adapted by Ed Emery, the fast moving action takes place in a police station where an absurd re-enactment of events ensues to determine if the anarchist’s plummet to the street was an accident or foul-play. Using real-life events that took place in Milan in 1969 as a starting point, Fo uses comedy and farce to highlight the corruption and

bureaucracy that was prevalent in Italian politics and policing. The events of the play itself, however, are fictional. The play starts with Inspector Bertozzo (Richard Brundage) interrogating “the Maniac” (A.J. Ditty) on the third floor of the police station. When Bertozzo leaves the room, the Maniac intercepts a phone call from Inspector Pissani (Jason Plourde). The phone call lets the Maniac know that a judge is due at the police station to investigate the interrogation and death of the anarchist. The Maniac decides to impersonate the judge and gets the police to re-enact the events leading up to the anarchist’s death.

Family Search Genealogy Workshops at Wolfeboro Library The Wolfeboro Public Library, in conjunction with The Lakes Region Genealogical Interest Group, will conduct a series of five genealogical workshops about using FamilySearch. org beginning on Tues., August 18 at 10 am. The workshops are free and open to all. Each workshop, presented by local genealogist Dee Ide, will emphasize a different topic designed to help participants in their research efforts. Topics will include accessing and navigating Family Search Family Tree,

adding and correcting information, using “Source Box” and adding photos and stories. Classes will run through September 15. Dee Ide has been on the staff at the Riverton Family Search Library in Riverton, Utah for the last three winters. Doll Raffle Offers Betsey The Happy Hobby Doll Club is raffling a wonderful hand-carved wooden doll made in 1996 for the Alton, NH Bicentennial. Sarah Elizabeth Hanna, lovingly nicknamed “Betsey” is 15 inches and is a replica of the pegjointed wood dolls of the Georgian Period (mid to late 1700s). Her wooden hands have individually carved fingers, her painted eyes have dotted eyelashes and eyebrows and she has a flax wig. Carved by the Rev. Fred Laughon of Virginia, Betsy is marked on her back: “Made Especially for Happy Hobby Doll Club, Alton, NH Bicentennial 1795-1996.” Doll club members researched fashions circa 1796, and Betsy is provided with every type of clothing a young New Hampshire lady could have wanted in 1776, and more than most would have had. Since the date 1776 represents a transitional period in clothing, Betsey’s wardrobe ranges from “Colonial” style with panniers and petticoats to the “latest” fashions with a high waistline. Betsy has underwear including a corset for each of these styles and outerwear such as a cape, shawl and hats. All her clothing has been hand sewn and made to be as authentic as possible and includes nightwear, wrapper and mob cap, corsets, camisoles, petticoats, pockets, blue skirt with green plaid overdress and shawl, day gown and bonnet, riding outfit and hat,

red hooded cape, stole and matching muff, black wool shawl and a unique green silk over-bonnet. In addition to her clothing, a blanket chest is also included as is Betsy’s chair where she sits with her needlework in her lap patiently awaiting raffle day, August 24, when the lucky winner will take her to her new home. The doll and her accessories are on display at the Alton Town Hall through August 21 when she will travel to the Alton Community/Senior Center, 7 Pearson Road for the drawing of the winning raffle ticket, on August 24 at 11:30 am. Tickets may be purchased from Happy Hobby Doll Club members by contacting Pat at patatlake@aim. com. The proceeds from the raffle will be used for the club’s philanthropic and educational endeavors. The Happy Hobby Doll Club is a United Federation of Doll Clubs member and promotes the education, history and study of dolls from around the world. This raffle doll is a fine example where the construction of the doll itself and the research and sewing of her wardrobe provided a hands-on learning experience for the club members. HHDC meets the 4th Saturday of each month at the Alton Bay Community Center at 11:30 am. Nonmembers are invited to attend the meetings and programs.

Strafford Wind Symphony Comes to Wolfeboro The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand welcome the Strafford Wind Symphony back to Cate Park on Sat., August 22, for the next show in the free summer concert series. The group returned to the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee last summer after an absence of a few years and is set to delight the crowd with patriotic numbers as well as a mix of traditional music for wind ensemble. The Symphony is a 55-member group that meets weekly to rehearse in Rochester. The group includes musicians from all walks of life; members travel from Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire to share their passion for music. The group has performed numerous

times at the Boston Festival of Bands, held annually at Faneuil Hall Marketplace each June, and is also a big supporter of National Music in our Schools Month, where the group performs concerts that are specifically geared toward young musicianship and often open up the stage to share with young musicians. In that same vein, the ensemble also opens its membership to talented high school students who want to broaden their musical horizons. The band’s conductor and music director is Bruce Gatchell. He started as the assistant conductor and became the music director in 2013. Gatchell has taught music in Rochester, Epping and Concord public schools and also taught at Plymouth State University.

He also has served for almost three decades as a teacher, conductor and counselor for the University of New Hampshire Summer Youth Music School. Now retired, he continues as music director for the Leddy Center for the Performing Arts Broadway musical productions. The Strafford Wind Symphony’s assistant conductor is Jeffrey Smith. He taught in Norwalk, Connecticut public schools for 35 years and also taught at Western Connecticut State University. He is currently the University of New Hampshire Wildcat Marching Band drill designer. He regularly guest conducts on the middle and high school levels and is an active music arranger and marching band drill and visual designer.

The ensemble members believe in the power of music and share their commitment to music with the audiences they perform for each and every concert. The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand are committed to bringing quality music to Cate Park every Saturday night in the summer months (July and August), with concerts beginning at 7 pm and featuring a wide variety of musical acts. While the concerts are free, volunteers will “pass the buckets” during intermission to help raise funds to support the concert series, which continues to provide great entertainment at the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand.

Farmington Hay Day Fundraiser The first annual Farmington Youth Sports Fundraiser is taking place at Farmington’s 34th Hay Day, on Sat., August 22, enticing people throughout the Lakes Region to experience smalltown festivities. Located at 24 Central Street in Farmington, New Hampshire, this fundraiser runs from 9 am to 4 pm and restores the Hay Day tradition of

competitive spirit in a family-friendly environment with a series of carnivalstyle games and competitions with tickets sold to those who wish to compete. Among the 14 games and three contests planned, there will be a Hay Toss competition where the strongest competitors age 16 and older try to

Another exciting game is a new version of the old Cow Pie Bingo called Chicken Poo Bingo, which brings the old farm feeling to Hay Day on a smaller scale. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to instructional youth sports programs serving children ages 3-18 while providing a healthy, clean and exciting environment in athletics for the youth of Farmington, Middleton, Milton, New Durham and surrounding

communities. The organization is operated solely by volunteers and currently offers programs in archery, baseball, basketball, football, futsal, golf, soccer, softball, and volleyball. Proceeds from the event will support purchasing equipment and conducting competition in each of these sports year-round. Farmington’s Hay Day is free and open to the public. (Courtesy Louise Masailo) The New Hampshire Boat Museum, located in Wolfeboro, announces its third and final lecture of the summer season on Thurs., August 20 at 7 pm. Maggie Moody Stier of Wolfeboro, a life-long Lake Wentworth summer resident, historian, and author will present an illustrated talk titled The Legacy of Camps, Cottages, and Tourism on Lake Wentworth. The program is free and open to the public and is supported by a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities. Stier will share highlights of her ongoing research on the history of camps, cottages, lodging and recreation on Wolfeboro’s Lake Wentworth. She will present an overview of the late 19th and early 20th century settlement of the lakeshore and islands, examining the styles, construction features, and landscape characteristics of the early camps, and showcasing several wellpreserved examples. Stier also will share stories of the “founding” families, where they came from, how they got here, and what they did during their summer vacations on the lake. Other topics will include the interconnected business associations, personal friend-

ships and kinship ties that spurred Lake Wentworth’s development through the late-20th century. Stier will conclude with a look at contemporary issues: the rising cost of property ownership on the lake, trends in lakefront development, and the growing interest in conservation and preservation initiatives. Lisa Simpson Lutts, the Boat Museum’s Executive Director says, “We are excited to present this talk on Lake Wentworth history as a companion to our season exhibit, A Pilgrimage to Simplicity: Lake Wentworth Traditions and History, which is on view through October 12. Lake Wentworth’s story will be familiar to those from other lakes as well. This program and exhibit offer a fascinating glimpse into one of the major forces in New Hampshire’s development as a summer tourist destination.” The New Hampshire Boat Museum is open to the public for the 2015 season and will remain open daily through Mon., October 12, 10 am to 4 pm on Monday through Saturday, and Sunday from 12 noon to 4 pm. 6th Annual Chili Challenge on the Green at Durgin Stables On Sat., August 22, the Kingswood Youth Center (KYC) will be holding its 6th annual Chili Challenge on the Green at Durgin Stables. The event will run from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm and will feature awardwinning chili recipes from community members and local restaurants. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children and KYC teen members and children 12 and under get in for free! This is the annual fundraiser for the Kingswood Youth Center (KYC), a nonprofit organization that serves students in grades 7 to 12 (ages 12 to 18) in the Governor Wentworth School District. The mission of the Center is to provide a safe and positive environment in which youth may grow, learn and develop life skills critical to their success in the adult world. This mission is accomplished by offering an

after school program that features programs related to nutrition and cooking, arts and crafts, physical and emotional health, woodworking, volunteering at the Lakes Region Humane Society, and much more. The KYC also runs a Life Skills program that focuses primarily on goal setting and career exploration. The Center makes creating a relationship between the teens and the surrounding community a top priority, and the Chili Challenge is another great way to participate. History of Lower Gilmanton Gilmanton Historical Society Many are familiar with the two larger centers of Gilmanton—the Corners and the Iron Works. Lesser known is the third center, Lower Gilmanton. Paula Gilman and Lori Baldwin, Historical Society board members, with Pat Clarke, board vice president, will present a program on the history of Lower Gilmanton. Come and learn about this important part of the town, which encompasses so much more than the church that remains today. Lakes Region’s 36th Annual Fine Arts and Crafts Festival in Meredith Plans are now complete for the Lakes Region 36th Annual Fine Arts and Crafts Festival to be held in Meredith on Saturday and Sunday, August 29 and 30. Sponsored by the Meredith Area Chamber of Commerce, the Festival is held on the Main Street of Meredith and amid the shops at the Mill Falls Marketplace. From its inception 35 years ago, the event attracts high quality artists and craftsmen and continues to be one of the most respected arts and crafts events in the Lakes Region. Eighty juried artists and craftsmen will present high quality merchandise. Featured in the craft category will be pottery, leather, wood products, weaving, quilting, metal sculpture, jewelry, baskets, dolls and toys. Artwork will include watercolor, oil paintings, pen and ink drawings, and photography and theorem paintings. Several artists will be demonstrating at their booths. Musical entertainment, sponsored by Meredith Village Savings Bank, will take place both days on the Main Street Stage. Marc Elbaum, Christine Chaisson and Jarrod Taylor will perform both days and will play music from every era including Big

Band, Swing, down country, island, rhythm and blues, as well as classic and contemporary rock and roll. Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues Graces the Plymouth Stage At 7:30 pm on Wed., August 19, The Flying Monkey presents Justin Hayward and his band. As lead vocalist, guitarist and songwriter for The Moody Blues, Hayward penned and sang many of the group’s mega-hits including Nights in White Satin, Your Wildest Dreams, Tuesday Afternoon, Story in Your Eyes, Question, I Know You’re Out There Somewhere, and Ride My See-Saw. Mike Dawes will open the show. Having chalked up nearly 50 years at the peak of the music and entertainment industry, Justin Hayward’s voice has been heard the world over. Known principally as the vocalist, lead guitarist and composer for the Moody Blues, his is an enduring talent that has helped define the

times in which he worked. Over the last 45 years, the band has sold 55 million albums and received numerous awards. Commercial success has gone hand-in-hand with critical acclaim. The Moody Blues are renowned the world over as innovators and trailblazers who have influenced any number of fellow artists. Justin is honored with the Moody Blues on the Rock Walk Hall of Fame on Sunset Boulevard. Having started the ball rolling as a songwriter in his own right with a couple of solo singles, he joined the Moody Blues in the summer of 1966. Hitting his stride immediately with the single Fly Me High, he followed it up with the classic hit songs Nights in White

Satin and Tuesday Afternoon from the seminal album Days of Future Past. This album went on to become a favorite of the NASA astronauts and was taken aboard the Atlantis shuttle space craft by Chief astronaut “Hoot” Gibson on many missions. When the Moody Blues took a break from touring in 1975, Justin worked on the Blue Jays album, followed by the hit single Blue Guitar (recorded with the members of 10cc). Although the Moodys continued to record and tour at the highest level, Justin also found time to create several solo albums: Songwriter, Night Flight, Moving Mountains and The View From the Hill. Proving that he could write massive hits outside of

the Moody Blues, Justin hit the Top Ten globally in 1978 with Forever Autumn. “I have spent most of my life, so far, on the road,” he says. “Playing live and creating a small piece of magic in a room is like a drug to me, one that I never want to give up,” says Hayward. Indeed, and we are happy for that. His is a talent that has helped soundtrack more than a generation and created a legacy that remains undimmed. Trends in Loon Populations at Loon Center On Thurs., August 20, Loon Preservation Committee Senior Biologist/Executive Director, Harry Vogel will present trends in New Hampshire’s loon population and preliminary statistics on how loons fared in the state over the last year. The New Hampshire-grown mums are available in four colors this year: burgundy/red; orange/bronze; yellow/ gold; and lavender/pink. All plants come in generous eight-inch pots and cost $5.50 each – the same price as last year. I spent a wonderful few hours at the Society a number of years ago and recalled that the docent on duty knew a lot about the town and its history. I thought it worth a stop to see what was on exhibit this summer. I parked on the side of the building and noticed how well kept the grounds appeared with flowerbeds and a manicured lawn. This is obviously a historical society with active members! I entered by the side door and was greeted by Norman Atkinson and his daughter, nine-year-old Meca. Amazingly, they remembered me from my previous visit and we chatted about what is on display this summer and their latest projects. “We are working on the history of the Moultonborough Lion’s Club and Meca and I have also been researching the old cellar holes in the Castle in the Clouds area in Moultonborough,” Norman told me. Norman, as I recalled from my previous visit, is a parent who involves his daughter in his projects. I was impressed to see Meca is an enthusiastic and active member of the Moultonborough Historical Society and may be its youngest and most knowledgeable member! Norman accompanied me to the huge main room of the museum where hundreds of items are on display, broken down into topic areas. Meca

was excited to show me the huge dollhouse that is on exhibit, created by area resident Pat Lamprey. Pat began collecting dollhouses and miniatures in the 1970s and the Gray House, on display, was among her favorites. Pat faithfully decorated the huge dollhouse for all the holidays. The dollhouse was donated to the Society in 2007 by a Lamprey family member in memory of Pat Lamprey. I loved the large dollhouse decorated in minute detail. The house includes everything from furniture to items sitting atop a dresser to an American flag waving on the porch. Old, rustic signs are a favorite of mine, and I liked the “Admission 50 cents” sign and Ossipee Mountain Park sign, both old advertising pieces from long ago. Another fascinating artifact on display is a very old metal soldier’s helmet that Norman said was found on top of nearby Red Hill among some rocks in the 1970s. It is believed that the helmet was left among the rocks by a French soldier spying on the English during the French and Indian wars. To see such an old, old item is most amazing and one cannot help but wonder who once wore the helmet. I was perplexed by a huge ball of twine sitting in a wooden wheelbarrow until Norman told me it was a collection of string/twine gathered over the years by Moultonborough’s postman. It is quite an unusual piece of local history; it is just such weird, quirky items that make local history so fascinating. Other items included an old quilt, Civil War items, including the rifle Norman’s great-grandfather used in the Civil War. The display offers a peek at a time when the War Between the States swept the nation and touched even a tiny town such as Moultonborough in rural New Hampshire. I love antique clothing, so I was especially drawn to the display of old hats and beaded purses. The collection shows how women carried their small

• Day Tripping Continued from page 32 belongings and money in olden days in ornate, embroidered and beaded purses. A large framed picture on one wall shows Ossipee Mt. Park’s inn. I noted a very big Victorian-type house and barn in the photo. (At one time the Park was an area of land next to the property owned by Thomas Plant of Castle in the Clouds. The photo shows Weelahka Hall at Ossipee Mt. Park, an estate once owned by the Oliver family.) Elsewhere in the Lamprey House, Norman and his daughter showed me more exhibits, such as the Woman’s Work is Never Done display of oldfashioned laundry items, with a washing machine and old linens. Norman and Meca led me to the end of the building and into the barn, which was donated by Laconia Savings Bank (now Bank of NH). The bank generously had the structure moved to its present location for use by the Historical Society. It now houses tools, old wagon wheels and other fascinating artifacts of the past. (One item I loved was the old spire with weathervane still attached; it once was positioned atop the roof of the Kona Farm barn and is

quite a sight, appearing to look like an upside down ice cream cone!) I asked Norman if he could show me the schoolhouse also on the property and part of the Historical Society. Meca came along as we crossed the lawn to the old-fashioned one-room schoolhouse. The pretty little building once served as the Middle Neck Schoolhouse. The modest size of the school is surprising, but one must remember at the time it was in use (1800s to just after World War II), outlying communities had small populations. The schoolroom is set up as it probably once was, with rows of children’s desks, a blackboard on one wall and a teacher’s desk at the front of the room, as well as a wood stove that once warmed the students and teacher on chilly days. Next door to the school is the Moultonborough Town House/Grange Hall, a large structure where once upon a time, voting, town meetings and social events took place. Today it is maintained by the Society and opened for special occasions and meetings and programs. Those who want to glimpse Moultonborough’s past have only to stop by the Society Thursday, Friday, or

Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and give tours of the property. The Society is offering a number of free, public programs in the coming months. In September, the Society will offer a program on Steam Boats with David Thompson (date TBA); on October 13, Darryl Thompson will speak about The Shaker Legacy; on November 9,

there will be a Veteran’s Pot Luck Dinner and on December 14, a Christmas Party will be held at the Moultonborough Public Library. Lakes Region Legendary Locals “My wish is that readers will be inspired and encouraged by the people in Legendary Locals of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. With a few exceptions, they are notable men and women who saw the advantage of working today to create a positive influence on the lives of people in the future.” —Ray Carbone He writes about the “man with the trumpet”, the doll creations of Annalee, a Grammy award nominated folk singer from Ossipee, the woman who was the heart of Melvin Village, among many others. New Hampshire author Ray Carbone’s book, Legendary Locals of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region offers a fascinating glimpse at the many people who contributed to the area. The book features snippet stories on well-known locals such as Annalee Thorndike, creator of the beloved Annalee Dolls, and also lesser-known people such as Marion Robie of Melvin Village who owned the town’s general store and managed the local telephone exchange as well as running the post office. New England is notable and fascinating to many because of its colorful characters, and Carbone’s book reflects that heritage. The book makes a good bedside or beach read, because each notable person Carbone writes of receives about a page of copy with a photo. This gives the reader the chance to learn something new about someone they might not have met otherwise, but one does not get bogged down in chap-

ter after chapter about a single person. Legendary Locals of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region shares stories of unique individuals and groups, past and present, who have had a lasting impact on the community throughout its history. A description of the book relays that the Lakes Region has a rich variety of landscape and scenery, from the calm of summer on Squam Lake to the robust white winter mountaintops of Gunstock. The people who call the area home reflect the same wide palette of humankind. From the pre-Revolutionary War surveyors who marked their initials on a rock at Weirs Beach to Bob Lawton, owner of the world’s largest arcade (Funspot), the area has it all. The book is approximately 128 pages in length, and broken down into chapters: Early Days; Growth; Community Glimpses; Artists and Craftsmen; Tourism Then and Now; In Service and Here and There. In the chapter called Early Days, we are treated to information on notables in the Lakes Region, such as Governor John Wentworth and Charles Tilton, as well as Dudley Leavitt and the Downing family of Alton. Learn how these early residents of the area influenced the communities where they settled, from the mansion of the Royal Governor to the teachings of instructor Leavitt. The chapter titled Growth tells of the movers and shakers who helped the Lakes Region prosper, such as Mr. Morin, the owner of Laconia’s Belknap

Mill and Eliza L e a d b e a t e r, the creator of the Belknap County Economic Development Council. The Comm u n i t y Glimpses chapter takes a look at those who contributed much to their towns, such as Esther Peters, a very well known and beloved female radio broadcaster and egg man Bert Southwick. Artists and Craftsmen tells of the growth of the arts in the Lakes Region, with a look at such notables as Peyton Place author Grace Metalious and Gilford painter Loren Percy. Others featured are summer resident/famed painter Jules Olitski and professional artist Larry Frates. A chapter on Tourism takes the reader into the past when men like Thomas Plante built a grand summer home that would later become Castle in the Clouds, now open to visitors for tours each summer and fall. In the chapter titled Service, we learn of the many Lakes Regioners who

The Story of a Five-Year-Old Holocaust Survivor Kati Preston The Wright Museum will host the 16th session of the Ron Goodgame and Donna Canney 2015 Educational Programming on Tuesday, August 25, beginning at 7 pm. Preston will discuss how her whole Jewish family was exterminated and how, when she was five years old, the Hungarian Nazis hunted her with bayonets in the hayloft where she was hidden. Preston’s talk is not about being a victim, which she is not. It is about

being a survivor, which she is. Kati delivers a message of love and hope for a better future. Gilford Rotarians in action pouring, flipping, and adding fresh blueberries to a batch of Gilford Old Home Day Pancakes. President Richard Ayers and other members of Gilford Rotary, and was first presented to Corey Ellis in 1989. Originally thought of as an “initially endowed” and eventually “self-sustaining” program, Gilford Rotary funded the Scholarship with seed money. The proceeds/earnings of the investments plus contributions by members of the Foundation, board and Selection Committee, as well as Gilford Rotary, have resulted in $500 to $2,500 grants to the recipients over the years. Since the beginning, a silver commemorative bowl, a citation, and the grant have been given to recipients at Senior Awards Night in June. A selection committee of board members, friends and past recipients has conducted interviews to select the recipients. The Scholarship has traditionally attracted applications from the brightest and most talented leaders and scholar/athletes.

Annual Robbie Mills Memorial Golf Tournament The annual Robbie Mills Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at the Lochmere Country Club in Tilton. The event, which is hosted by the MetroCast Foundation, will benefit organizations that serve at-risk youth and other vulnerable groups in the region. Now in its 17th year, the event began as an effort to honor the memory of Robbie Mills, a 14-year-old Laconia boy who was killed in 1997 for his trail bike by two older teens (Mills’ mother is a MetroCast employee). The MetroCast event was launched that year to support the Robbie Mills Memorial Fund, which donated to organizations in the Laconia area that served at-risk youth. In subsequent years, the number of organizations supported by the fundraiser expanded to include the Boys & Girls Club of the Lakes Region, Greater Lakes Child Advocacy Center (Belknap-Merrimack Community Action Program), Spaulding Youth Center Foundation, Greater Lakes Region Charitable Foundation for

Children (Children’s Auction), and more. With this in mind, Jim Bruder, Chairman and CEO of Harron Communications, MetroCast’s parent company, founded the MetroCast Foundation in 2007 to facilitate donations for the Tournament from MetroCast video programmers, vendor partners and local businesses. Last year’s event raised more than $30,000 in support of youth-serving organizations in the region. “We are grateful to all who have supported this worthy cause in prior years and look forward to an enjoyable day for participants and a successful day for the organizations that are supported through the event,” said MetroCast general manager Edward Merrill. With the 2015 event approaching, MetroCast is seeking event sponsors and tournament registrations.
