oth the Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque are getting new engines that will be the most powerful they’ve ever had. That’s the result of JLR’s new range of Ingenium petrol engines, built at the company’s Engine Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton. We’ve got used to the four-cylinder Ingenium diesel engines, but the new range of four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engines promises a new development for the classic SUVs. It comes at a good time, with plenty of concern about the future of diesel engines driving a slowdown in diesel sales. The new petrol engine will bring smoothness and refinement to even higher levels in both vehicles, while at the same time offering increased efficiency and lower emissions. The 240PS (236bhp) Ingenium Petrol in the Evoque is 15% more efficient than the GTDi alternative, for example. But some are going to be putting their tick next to the more powerful version. The 290PS Si4 engine (286bhp) fits both the Evoque and the Discovery Sport and gives both these vehicles more power than ever before. To give you an idea of pace these vehicles will possess, their 0-62mph

Eastwood for sending in the picture and letting us run what is her unique method of selling a Land Rover. This made us chuckle, and because we like making you happy, here it is for you. ‘1985 B reg Series III Land Rover 109” Pick Up. Ex-MoD, only four owners, 77,000 miles, new MoT. Ul-

it an enhanced bodykit as standard. This is good timing by JLR and should ensure those epic sales figures just keep on rising.

At FJ we understand every classic vehicle owner is different. With FJ+ you can add to your policy from a range of cover tra-cool – the various dents only make it cooler. Bloody awful vehicle to drive but that’s half the fun. Delights small children as it rattles and bounces over bumps. It never ever gets stuck in the mud because it has proper country tyres. There’s an organic in-cab irrigation system (rain comes in) together with eco fan system (wind comes in). No power steering, so you get lovely toned arms and shoulders without having to join a gym. But everyone who sees it adores it and people come over to talk to you when you fill up with fuel (this takes a while, as you practically have to dismantle the seat to get to the fuel tank). However, it always starts; is spectacularly simple to maintain because it has no sodding ECU or anything even vaguely resembling one. The hay in the cabin is home-made and included for free. The car is £4,000 and worth every goddamn penny.’ The ad is in our classifieds section if you actually are interested in buying this vehicle.

Words: Graham Scott

e haven’t even seen the new Range Rover Velar on the roads, yet there is already a performance version on the drawing board. It’s going to mark the celebration of 30 years of work by the German tuning company Lumma Design. The company has been making performance parts, everything from engine tuning to bodywork, for a variety of vehicles for three decades, and Range Rovers have definitely been on that list. Now they’re celebrating the past by embracing the future in the shape of the Range Rover Velar. Soon after the Geneva motor show this year Lumma unveiled the Lumma CLR GT Widebody version of the official Velar shown at the show. The Velar sits between the Evoque and Range Rover Sport, and this

NEWS

exhaust systems and manifolds in stainless steel

Widebody makes it sit there even, yes, wider than before. The elements are made to the rigorous German TUV standards, although, at this stage, Lumma is not releasing any information on potential engine or transmission upgrades over the standard petrol and diesel variants offered by Range Rover. But we do know the CLR GT limited-edition Velar will have new bodywork. This works backwards from a new front spoiler with mesh inserts for a more aggressive look, a carbonfibre sporty bonnet, new rear spoiler lip and new rear diffuser with angular stainless steel sports exhaust pipes. To the sides, there are wider wheelarches and door panel extensions which change the stance of the vehicle, making it look more squat and racelike. This impression will be enhanced with those wide wheelarches filled by Lumma’s own double five-spoke alloys fitted with 305/35R22 tyres.

The vehicle retains its normal four-wheel drive system and all other technologies, and will have Lumma enhancements fitted to the luxury cabin. Lumma plans on starting to sell the finished vehicle around the end of 2017, to fit in with its 30th anniversary celebrations. No prices have been released, but more info will follow at www.lumma-design.com Given that JLR has put significant effort into designing the Velar so it represents a continuation of the Range Rover brand while, at the same time, exploring new styling and technology, this seems like a fairly bold move by the German company. Lumma itself talks about how the production Velar has driving fun built into its DNA ‘whether you are tackling tarmac roads or venturing off the beaten path’. One has to wonder what kind of beaten path Lumma has in mind for its widebodied Velar. If it’s like many paths less taken that a

in association with

standard Velar could traverse, one would expect to see it strewn with expensive bits of German carbonfibre fairly early on. No, this is making an SUV a purely road vehicle and for some people that will doubtless be a good thing, since, let’s face it, how many Velar owners will really test the Intelligent Driveline Dynamics and axle articulation? However, it is making the exterior footprint wider without adding any extra width to the cabin. This is large-

ly a visual exercise, and on our crowded roads and equally crowded parking bays that may be an issue. But, again, will owners be jamming their vehicles into NCP car parks anyway? Clearly the Lumma CLR GT Widebody is going to split opinion, possibly quite vigorously. And for Lumma that will be just what it wants to do. It will probably attract those people paid very highly by the week, and if it does then it will be a true ‘back of the net’ result.

Exmoor Excites Words and Pictures: Martin Tier

I

t’s the beginning of April and a beautiful (but possibly unseasonably) warm day. Myself and my two boys find ourselves sat deep in a wood in the middle of Exmoor. Perhaps not overly unusual you might suggest, but I had left our Discovery a few miles away in a field – you may well be wondering why! We were there for the 39th running of the Somerset Stages Rally, settling in for a day of watching all forms of rally cars you could possibly imagine fly by. A couple of entries unexpectedly caught our eye – one being a BMW M3-powered Land Rover Discovery, and the other, like us, you may consider an even more exciting prospect, namely the Armed Forces Rally Team in their rally-prepared Wolf. The Discovery was immense through the woods, I’m not sure I have ever seen suspension compress on any car at any time as much as that

showcased going through the rut in the road by us, having been dug out earlier in the day by the obligatory Escorts and Subarus. It was certainly the most agile Discovery I have seen, on- or off-road. The ‘Wolfpack’, as the Armed Forces team is collectively known, were – in a word – bonkers. Flying through the forest in what is little more than a standard Defender, with a Td5 lump grunting its way out of turns, their sheer courageousness was laudable. They, however, seemed to be having the most fun too, with no fear of the

bumps in the road. At one point one of the Wolfs hit a bump and its back door flew open. Classy. This, though, only served to endear the Wolfpack to us further, their tenacity and sheer determination to throw the 90, at speed, down the bumpy dusty roads of a Somerset forest. Full on commitment all of the time. These guys and girls are a special breed, not only do they fearlessly throw a Land Rover around a forest at breakneck speed, but they are of course members of our Armed Forces, and for that they also have our utmost respect.

Can I have a word...

I

found myself on Land Rover’s own website this month, primarily to check some figures on their rapid SVO products you can read about further on in this issue. However, it wasn’t any form of statistics on the website that left an impression on my little brain. Instead, I felt a genuinely strong sense of absence as I peered through their selection of vehicles and the name Defender was nowhere to be seen. Now, my brain isn’t so tiny to have only just cottoned on to the fact the Defender isn’t with us anymore, but something clicked in my mind and a thought registered inside me that it just doesn’t feel right seeing the Land Rover family without a Defender reppin’ the traditional Green Oval workhorse ethic. I know it will return in the not too distant future (rumours are being banded around that the new incarnation will be launched at next year’s Geneva Motor Show) but that doesn’t make it any easier now. This feeling wasn’t helped by driving a lovely original 1984 Land Rover 90 County Station Wagon soon after my web surfing, with this particular example being part of the wonderful Dunsfold Collection. You can view pictures of it on their website, but we’ll be running a full feature on it in The Landy at some point in the future. Sitting inside it and rekindling my appreciation for County spec seats, I just felt this urge to be impatient, to become a toddler demanding its next toy – I want Land Rover to be producing a Defender again. And I want them to do it now. Until that moment comes once again, the world – through my eyes at least – just won’t feel right. Mike Trott, Editor michael.trott@ assignment-media.co.uk

e know your diary gets filled up early, so stick these dates in: 22-27 July 2018. Next summer. Those dates cover the Defender Spirit Tour, a ‘Touring 4x4 Rally that will lead the most Series/Defenders from the South of France to England.’ It’s going to be a rolling event, crossing France to the UK, with a convoy of vehicles covering everything from 1948 to 2018. There will be concerts, local markets, entertainment and much more as this extravaganza rolls through the French countryside, stopping at pre-determined night stops along the way. It’s also comforting to see there will be medical back-up, security and a team of mechanics also on call. All you need to do is rock up in a suitable Land Rover. When the convoy reaches England, its final stopping point will

be the Kelmarsh Hall Land Rover Fest, so that’s a great way to end. So if you fancy a holiday in France next year with like-minded people as you cruise up from the South of France, then check out www.land-lifeevents.com and have a bonne vacance.

Plus, if you really can’t wait till next summer, you can come down to the Kelmarsh Land Rover Show on at the end of July and chat with the organisers themselves to hear their plans for this celebratory event of Land Rover’s 70-year history.

ou know the drill – eBay has given three amateur restorers £4000 each to return their vehicles to their former glory. In some cases this return involves quite a long journey. One of the trio is Dan Goude, who has to buy all the parts he needs from eBay to restore his 1964 Series IIA. He only has until 10 July to complete the restoration, so he’s scouring

eBay for bits, getting things fitted and, in between times, chewing his nails. It’s time to catch up with the latest state of play. Dan has taken the front end off Bertha. Bertha is the Landy’s name, in case you were confused. The roof has gone too. With the front off, Dan is focusing on rebuilding the engine but he’s also looking at getting some new body panels.

His best moment so far was finding an eBay seller who made new panels to Land Rover spec. The company was just down the road from the first Land Rover factory at Longbridge, so there’s a neat symmetry. Catch up on all the latest progress Dan makes via this YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=mKRv1dSJHTY&feature=youtu.be

Iconic Arkonik

J

Words: Graham Scott

LR is busy exporting something like 80% of its products around the world (which neatly conforms to the Pareto Principle, that everything in life splits 80/20). That’s a vast number but every little helps, right? Arkonik, based in Frome, Somerset, is gradually helping those exports by sending restored Defenders across the Atlantic to North America. So far it has sent over 150 Green Oval vehicles far from home, but at least most of them have gone to a warmer, dryer home than they would have had here.

Because of US import regulations, the main market is for vehicles over 25 years old, and a restored Land Rover is bang on the money for such a market. For example, the Boulder, the latest conversion, has gone to Colorado – we’d hazard a guess they live in Boulder in Colorado. Call us psychic. The Boulder is a restored 110 Station Wagon, but this is far more than a restoration. Instead it’s a reimagining of how the 110 SW could have been, combined with a manifestation of what the new customer actually wants it to be. The whole vehicle has been worked on extensively, inside and out. It’s a

Double S

exhaust systems and manifolds in stainless steel +44(0)1884 33454 www.stainlesssteelexhausts.co.uk

left-hand drive model so that’s perfect for a US customer, and it’s now finished in Bonatti Grey with Java Black wheelarches, gloss black chequer plate and tinted windows. Very moody. Under the standard bonnet is a standard rebuilt 200Tdi, while underneath are guards for steering and front diff, along with sidesteps and NAS rear step. At the front there is a KBX grille behind the A-bar while up top there is a Front Runner roof rack. Vehicles like these seem to have more time spent on their interiors, and this Boulder’s cabin certainly rocks. There are heated grey leather seats, with two premium high-backed seats behind separated by an Elite Loc-box. Behind them are four foldup seats, which makes that roof rack look even more essential. The driver gets a cool retro Evander 15in wooden steering wheel, while the Alpine sound system should comfortably outdo the Tdi engine. Those are just a few of the highlights but the whole vehicle has been gone over from top to tail. The end result is a long way from the 110 that came off the production line all those years ago, but then this reimagined Land Rover is going to be living a long way from that production line. We hope the new American owner enjoys this most British of exports and that it really has Boulder over.

Your Defender chassis is certainly something you’ll be familiar with if you have an older model. Which is why you might be interested in a new, heavy-duty chassis from Britpart. Replace the whole thing, with a structure that is more robust and longer-lasting than the original, which inevitably was constrained by mass manufacturing methods and cost. The new chassis is made from S355-

grade alloyed steel and the legs are made from 3mm steel instead of the 2mm low-alloy steel of the original. The original used two-part lamination like on the outriggers to give extra strength, but this is susceptible to corrosion. The new frame uses simply thicker steel for these elements. The whole chassis has been set up for a final hot galvanisation process so there are minimal mud traps and

you can actually wash out the chassis or add wax protection easily. Rather than patching up the old one, maybe it would be worth investing in an entirely newer and stronger and more durable one. So far, there are chassis for Defender 90 300Tdi, 110 300Tdi and 110 Td5 with the 90 Td5 to follow. For more details have a look at their website: www.britpart.co.uk

Close Inspection NightSearcher – there’s a name for a company. And their latest product certainly fits into that image. The PRO250 Inspection Light is a multi-purpose light tool, capable of flooding an area with light or directing a close beam onto whatever you need to spot – where you put your beer down, what that strange growling noise is behind you or whatever. The magnetic base makes it perfect for when you’re working on your Landy, or there’s a hook if you find yourself in a situation with no Landy – a worrying situation indeed. Turn it on and there’s a 5m LED flood beam to illuminate a wider area with 250 lumens. You can twist the light around on its base or swivel it for getting that light exactly where you want it. And then, should you need it, there is an LED torch beam in the top for when you need to focus that light down onto something small and specific. It’s ruggedly made, with a rechargeable lithium ion battery and has an anti-slip grip. Pretty much perfect then for a night searcher. You’ll find all the details at www.nightsearcher.co.uk

SIP the Summer Away The school holidays are upon us, which means lots of children going ‘I’m bored’ within about a week of breaking up. Perhaps they’d like to get on with restoring your Landy project while you’re at work? That would keep them out of mischief. True, they’ll need some tools, but SIP Industrial Products has a summer promotion selling all kinds of fantastic products the children would really like to use. If you pick up the new Summer 2017 Promotion brochure you can go through it with them, choosing things that will bring a smile to their face. What about the SIP Spotmatic hand-held spot welders? They’re making a welcome return and any child over six would have hours of fun with one. Or there is a huge range of Winntec lifting equipment. Now, what child wouldn’t want to get your vehicle jacked up with either a hydraulic truck wheel dolly or even a 24-ton air/hydraulic jack? Then they could play underneath – or, hopefully, fix that oil leak – while left alone for hours. It can’t be a coincidence that the SIP promotion runs from 1 June to 30 September, usefully straddling the school holidays. So get down to your nearest SIP distributor or go online to www.sip-group.com and prepare for a summer of fun! Disclaimer: Just don’t.

I see you baby, burning that ass

There’s something really rather lovely about heated seats. Just a surprise that we don’t have them in our homes. But

getting them in your Land Rover can be a pricey business, and if you bought it second-hand then you had no say

in the matter. However, now there is a way to get heated bums on seats. This will work if your Land Rover has a removable seat cover of any sort. The heating element goes between the seat cover and the upholstery and stretches from the seat base up the back of the seat so you can warm your spine as well as your gluteus maximus. The cable set then connects the switches to the 12V onboard power supply and you’re getting toasty. There are temperature sensors to make sure things don’t overheat and also two stages of heating. You can heat both driver and passenger seats, each with their own controls. Yes, we realise, it’s summer and you don’t want this right now, but it’s an English summer so better be prepared! Check them out at Britpart’s website: www.britpart.co.uk

Lash Up Your Load Bungees come in handy for a great number of tasks, from securing your ankles as you dive off a tall bridge, to lashing down your family camping gear on the roof to securing your partner in the dungeon. All of these tasks are fairly important, but more often than not the bungee straps are held at each end by a hook, one that can unbend, fail or just ping off at some risk to everyone around. If you’re looking to ensure a safer way of securing your load, then these SecureTech Bungee Tie Downs seem just the job as they have a metal karabiner at both ends. That means the cords can be clipped on at each end with no chance of the hook slipping off and impaling itself in the side of your head. The silicone rubber inner corer with polyester braided outer

come in a variety of lengths from 400mm to 1000mm, and they’re made in South Africa. Even the longest, the one-metre version,

is only £18.60 a pair, so you owe it to yourself, your load and your partner to get some of these from Expedition Equipment.

It’s worth noting that you may need a version of longer length if you plan on doing some actual bungee jumping, but then you’re

a switched-on individual who had probably already realised that, hadn’t you? It’s all at www. expedition-equipment.com.

The major point of dash cams seems to be to upload to YouTube for others’ amusement as we watch astonishing road-rage incidents or someone taking 18 attempts to park their car. But they do actually have a sensible purpose in recording incidents which will later be of relevance to the Police or insurance agencies. Or indeed your partner who is wondering what you were doing on that road at that time of the evening and where exactly you were going. The latest addition to the Garmin range is this Dash Cam 65W. The main advantage over others in the range is that it has a wide field of view, positively panoramic in fact, out to 180-degrees. That should be wide enough to show anything coming in from the side, possibly before even the driver sees it. And useful for those who like looking at video of hedges and trees blurring by. Like many Garmin items, it has voice control, red light and speed camera alerts and forward collision and lane departure warnings. The camera is a 1080p resolution video recorder which can save footage on impact. Video is stored on an 8GB card and you can fit replaceable cards. The addition of GPS means the video also has time and location data embedded in it, so you can show it to your insurance company with a clear conscience, knowing that the other guy can argue it was your fault, but the camera never lies. The Garmin Dash Cam 65W is around £230 and to find out more visit www.garmin.com/DashCam.

Saving Face Face lifts are all the rage, with just about everyone having some sort of ‘work’ done on their face – haven’t you? Everything from the Croydon face lift where the woman pulls her hair back hard and ties it behind her head, pulling her facial skin back at the same time, to the full-on surgery. Apparently, and here’s a tip for you, a nip-and-tuck can be tricky for a bloke since it pulls the skin back behind your ears and means you end up shaving somewhere out of sight behind your ears every day. And here’s another easy way to get a face lift. This time for your Land

Rover, if it’s any of the Defender models with right-hand wing vents. Instead of expensive surgery, you just need to add these eye-catching if not eyebrow-raising elements to the face of your Landy. They come in silver or black, in either mesh or solid style, and they’re a doddle to fit. They’re made by Bearmach and have a three-year warranty, which is more than you’ll get if you put yourself under the knife. Something to make you smile – if your face isn’t frozen of course. We all like to have a bit of mud in our lives from time to time, and we’re certain that you realise we’re referring to the sort of mud you get in ruts, and not the type you’ll get plastered onto your head at a spa near you. But on the odd occasion, limiting the amount of crud coming off your Land Rover could be very useful. With this mudflap kit for the Range Rover Classic, debris will be trapped before being flung back and out towards other road users or oblivious pedestrians who aren’t expecting a mouthful of fresh brown material flying towards them. It’s a nice feeling driving along and knowing you haven’t taken anyone out through that last town you passed through. And you can thank Atkinson Bespoke Engineering for that after buying your new mudflap kit. We know you will, hence why we’ll leave this little phone number here for you so you can ring them yourselves! It’s 0121 559 5255.

This sounds more like something more used to the dance floor than the workshop. The MAGflex Twist LED Inspection Lamp can rotate through 360 degrees, can ratchet 180 degrees and has a comfortable grip, as well as doing a mean samba. You can hang it from a hook or use the built-in magnet to allow you to use both hands for something practical and enjoyable. The new COB LED technology gives it 250 lumens, which is eye-wateringly bright, with a white light similar to daylight. See, you’ll be in your workshop and you’ll soon lose all sense of time, of day or night. The lithium ion battery gives hours of charge and a quick recharge while the ABS and polycarbonate construction should mean it lasts for ages, even in the environs of a man cave. Just don’t have the light on you while you practice that samba threestep turn. It’s to be found at the obvious place: www.ringautomotive.com.

‘Dad had been using his Talbot Sunbeam to drive across the fields…

Katie’s Story

Words: Tim Howe Pictures: Mike Trott

Land Rovers have a knack of getting under your skin, leaving you stumped as to how you’ve become so attached to what essentially is a lump of metal. But we know it’s more than that – and this is the story of one Series Landy that has been rejuvenated, just when it looked like she might be moved on from the family she had so dearly served

B

ack in the late 1970s, my parents managed some land and properties for an elderly couple we’d known for decades. When the gentleman moved into a local care home, and eventually passed away, the workload for Mum and Dad (who were themselves retired) intensified. To carry out his duties, Dad had been using his own car, a Talbot Sunbeam, quite often driving it across fields. Realising this was an unacceptable situation; the lady (a non-driver) suggested she buy him a Land Rover on the condition that he looked after it as his own, but took her out for a spin every Sunday afternoon. It was a good deal. And so, in the spring of 1982, a brand new Series III, four-cylinder, 2.25-litre petrol-powered, cream-coloured, 109 Hard Top was delivered. Over the next seven years, Dad and I hauled many different loads

in Katie (so called because of the K in her number plate), but mostly logs because this was Warwickshire during the aftermath of the great Dutch elm disease (DED) tragedy. The hours we spent with the 4x4 beast, the snarl of our chainsaw, the smell of cut wood, petrol, tea and freshly made sandwiches are memories I shall cherish for as long as I am able to. Saturday 14 January 1989 dawned a glorious day – summer had come very early. Dad had always been a builder by trade and on this day was filling in a no longer required external doorway in his cottage on the green – stonework being his speciality. Katie was parked just behind him. By chance, I was at home and Mum was typing in her office. Realising she hadn’t heard the sound of his stonemason’s hammer for some time, she went out to investigate. I was upstairs, and I

heard her pounding footsteps followed by the cry of ‘Tim! Something’s happened to your father.’ I ran down to the front of the house. Outside, Dad was slumped against Katie’s front offside wheel. He had suffered a massive, fatal heart attack. Later, despite having passed her test in her 40s and only ever having driven vehicles up to 1500cc in capacity, Mum’s reaction to this end-of-theworld situation was: ‘I’ll drive the damn thing myself!’ And so she did. After inserting windows into Katie’s rear panels to improve all-round vision, and replacing her tailgate (which I still have) with a door, Mum kept her rolling for another ten years. By the time she too passed away in 1999 things had changed. The lady who’d originally bought Katie had died, and her land sold off. Though living back at the family home, I was working

full-time as an HGV driver and was often away. Thus began the saddest phase of Katie’s life. More than 20 years old and no longer garaged, she sat in the open,

her chassis rotting, with many of her leaf springs broken. I did occasionally fire her up, but when her solenoid switch failed and her fuel tank rusted through, even that stopped.

Above: Having only ever been tasked with travelling short distances, Katie’s total mileage is very modest. Consequently, when she paid a visit to Astwood 4x4, there was no need for a complete rebuild, just a thorough service and a couple of replacement parts to keep her heart running perfectly on song

Left: Even to this day, Katie potters about with Tim, helping him stock up with wood he collects from his own small holding of land. This lady is definitely a keeper Life happens, they say, and though I felt guilty every time I looked at her – at one point completely buried in the brambles – there were other things to worry about at the time. The turning point came a little over two years ago with a knock at the door. Outside, stood a bloke named Fred, who happened to share the same name as Dad. He was a bona fide, hands-on, Land Rover aficionado. He’d spotted this Series III from the road and wanted to buy her for restoration. It was fortunate for him he’d caught

me at a low ebb because I agreed to sell her for £400. That evening, with a whisky glass brimming, I went to say goodbye to Katie for the last time. Sitting behind her wheel, the memories stampeded back. There was even a smell about her – logs, petrol, honest toil. Dad had a way of clearing his throat when things needed to be sorted. I don’t remember what whisky I drank that night – but I heard Dad clear his throat. When I called Fred the next day to say the deal was off, the man went ape.

Understandably so, since Katie was a very straight vehicle snapped up for a song. Eventually, he calmed down, as all good Landy folk do because he’d realised there was something going on here – a kind of love affair. There is a saying: cometh the hour, cometh the man, and that man was Robert Howard of Astwood 4x4. He’s not a magician, but he’s pretty close. Right from the start, we agreed that for a reasonable cost Katie would be put back on the road just as she was. Continued overleaf

TRUST

I wanted her interior left untouched and everything else as original as possible. Rob never tried to bully me into anything, nor jack up the price. The only thing he did suggest (thank God) was a complete respray instead of just the shot-blasted bits. Below decks, anything unsalvageable was replaced: her chassis – now a Richards galvanised unit; leaf springs – now parabolics; the exhaust system and the petrol tank. Above decks, the panel respraying was actually better than original. She was fitted with three new doors, but I still have her original tailgate and top-hinged window.

Her engine, with such low mileage, didn’t need a rebuild, though all the crucial parts for a perfect fire up and perfect idling temperament were replaced. All five wheels were prepped and sprayed, retaining their original brake drums and I also have the original brake cylinders and pistons here at home, up for refurbishment. When the call came that she was done and I drove to Astwood Bank, Rob was very busy, as he so often is. After shaking hands, he left me to it – which I was glad of, for it is spine-tingling stuff to see an old friend brought back from the brink. In fact, it’s hard

These days, the grand old lady is securely garaged, and although a working vehicle once more, I have to admit, I’m reluctant to take her out in the rain! Sometimes keeping your Land Rover looking fairly understated is a good thing. This blue 110 seems to fit the bill pretty well, like when you fire it up and look under the bonnet, you realise it’s carrying a Chevy LS6 engine

Words and Pictures: Mike Trott treet racing isn’t something you would necessarily associate with Land Rovers of any description, nor is it a pastime that this well-behaved publication would condone. We all like to have fun in our toys, but with Land Rovers you’re more likely to think about making tracks in the grasslands of Africa, rather than how long your elevenses (the two black tyre marks running parallel to each other) may be at the traffic lights down in your city centre. Of course, partly this is down to Land Rovers not having much of a reputation for their pace. Let’s face it,

Workshop

old chap, you’re never going to set any quarter-mile records turning up with a 200Tdi unit in your engine bay – at least not for the right reasons anyway. But this is where things can play to our advantage. We can seize the initiative and play on the fact that others will mistakenly assume that they can make a dog’s dinner out of us and scamper off into the distance. All you need is the right tool for the job. So what’s this then? Looks like a regular old Land Rover 110 - hell it’s not even technically a Defender! But wait – can someone tell me why there’s a Chevy LS6 engine under the bonnet?

We all know how customisable Land Rovers are, and you’ll never see two the same, but there’s a lot to be said for being understated. After all, it’s just the quality you need to give you the element of surprise. Brendon Frost holds the keys to this ‘street sleeper’ and thrives on it being something out of the ordinary. ‘I bought this as a toy and I like stuff that’s not 100% normal,’ smirks Brendon. Normal on the outside it may be, but driving a 110 with such a V8 under the hood is bound to blow your cover at some point. ‘I can’t remember exactly when I

Above: Land Rover never made engines like this... because they weren’t the type of people to put cheese with everything. Happily, Americans at least realised that an engine bay was not a place for cheese. Instead they produced such contraptions as this, the Chevrolet LS6 V8 got the Land Rover, but it was around three years ago,’ reflects Brendon. ‘The conversion was done by a previous owner with the work first done in the ‘90s. Not only that, but the vehicle was originally a truck cab model before being changed to a hard-top version. ‘Then the owner apparently wanted to convert it into a military hard-top; wanted to make it stand out but ended up giving it these horrible after-fit

windows.’ Again, sometimes less is more, but it never hurts to have a trick or two up your sleeve, it’s just that Brendon’s trick is a massive great big American lump of a trick. Back to the story, and said previous owner had now managed to get bored of changing his 110 every five minutes and had shoved it in a barn and forgotten about it. Time passed, but eventually the 110 fell into the hands

of one of Brendon’s acquaintances. Naturally, Brendon put in a word for the 110 in case it ever became available – who wouldn’t want a Chevy-engined 110, right? Like the pace of your typical Land Rover, the story was a bit of a slow burner, with more years passing until one evening Brendon was having a beer with his pal. Continued overleaf

‘Whatever happened to that truck with the LS6 engine inside?’ questioned Brendon. ‘Funnily enough, I’ve still got it tucked away in the barn!’ came the reply. Like a lifeguard rushing to the aid of a stricken shoreline swimmer, Brendon could see the 110 needed rescuing. ‘It was in an awful state, wrecked really,’ recalls Brendon. ‘But it would have been a shame to break it up.

The whole body needed changing again and it was in a horrible army green colour with no interior and the transmission tunnel missing. There appeared to be about 20 different layers of paint on the bulkhead, too.’ No matter. This was a Land Rover with a rather enticing USP, and so with the 110 now in his possession, Brendon started to strip down the chassis which had come from Saudi Arabia

and therefore was completely free from rust. A bonus if ever there was one. But work still needed doing. The 110 was given a new roof and sides along with a new Td5 bonnet, while the tub turned out to be OK, but the wheels were rusted out. Brendon’s truck now runs as a tidy looking hard-top and, to the casual eye, a low-powered cumbersome machine that would struggle to carry itself to the end of a driveway, let alone burning off Daz and his mates who are looking for a drag race in the car they’ve just bought from Toys‘R’Us. I’m a big fan of this 110, I must say. Everything from the engine, to the looks, to the interior – it’s been finished perfectly. Brendon tells me it was previously a Marine Blue, and while this may not be that exact colour, the bodywork has been finished in a true Land Rover tint, in this case the dark blue from the early Td5 Defenders. A quick mention about that interior: there’s soundproofing from Noisekiller running throughout on the bonnet and bulkhead, acoustic carpets inside

Above: Clean, tidy, and surprisingly refined in here given the soundproofing supplied by Exmoor Trim and the roof lining has been given additional insulation so that even on a run, and despite its van-type form, it’s not as unrefined as you might think. ‘It’s understated, has a GM Chevy exhaust and just sounds like a Rover V8 out of time if you’re cruising along normally,’ smiles Brendon. ‘To drive, it’s very docile and there’s loads of torque, but when you want it to be it’s stunningly quick. It’s the torque that makes you laugh, though, there’s just this wave of it.’ And what about that V8 noise? Well, I think the 110’s owner sums it up pretty well. ‘When I try and describe it to people, the only way I can is to say that it has a note like God clearing his throat!’

Above: It might be time to update some of the details on this plaque... You can picture it, can’t you, Brendon on the way home from work one day and sitting patiently at the lights. Up rolls some delinquent in a shoebox thinking he’s going to screech off into the distance, with his engine making the same sound as the driver once being kicked in the plums. Cue the throat clearing, the green light, that all-American thunder and a big grin across Brendon’s face as he sees the shoebox diminish into his mirrors. All hypothetical, of course. This is a great Land Rover, and a classic case of substance over style. It’s a Land Rover well saved and, in this machine, Brendon has the most perfectly concealed weapon. We at The Landy love this vehicle, which is why we are letting you know that Brendon has recently put the vehicle up for sale. your purchasing experience, and emerge from the showroom as the proud new owner of a vehicle that moves uncharacteristically quickly for something with a Green Oval badge on the front.

Furthermore, if you decide today is a good occasion to hand over £133,680, the Special Vehicle Operations branch of JLR can deliver you a very quick Land Rover. In this instance, it’s a full-fat Range Rover sprinkled with a swathe of Autobiography reminders inside and outside, but with added garnish thanks to the engine from the Range Rover Sport SVR under the bonnet. So is this all the car you need – or is this all just a big waste of time? Firstly, a Range Rover Sport SVR can be bought for just £97,780 – or, in other words, for over £36,000 less than the SVA Dynamic. Ah, perhaps the latter is faster then? Nope. It accelerates from 0-60mph 0.6 seconds slower than the SVR. And should you find yourself on an autobahn in Germany when it’s not rush hour, you’ll only top 155mph as opposed to an SVR’s 162mph terminal velocity.

DO YOU WANT YOUR DEFENDER TO STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD?

Above: Only those who have a fetish for red approved of our test vehicle. There is a time and place for burlesque dancers, you realise... apparently it’s 1am in the back of an SVA Dynamic. Fortunately, there are other colourways available Oh dear. Now you’ve spent more than your mates and you’re the new laughing stock at whichever local you now want to avoid. There, there. Don’t worry old chum, perhaps there are some positives over losing £36,000. Hmm, best not mention the omission of the ‘loud exhaust’ button – that could finish you. I suppose the SVA Dynamic has a marginally bigger boot and you have a better turning circle by 0.1 metres. If that doesn’t get you laid I’m not really sure what will. Let’s just get in and drive the damn thing, maybe it will all start to make sense then. And do you know what? It does. Or at least, I can see what Land Rover has tried to pull off with this big red cruise liner. Unlike in the SVR, the Continued overleaf

engine doesn’t rule the whole experience. There’s a more civilised edge to the SVA Dynamic and the engine sits more in the background. You use the power when necessary rather than using it because you can. I’m not going to lie, the loss of the active exhaust button does make my heart sink a little, but then it only highlights the difference between these two personalities. The SVA Dynamic isn’t as raucous and is a more rounded vehicle. I can’t say complete because I have a point to make later on. The SVR, however, is that friend who always wants to go all out and get trolleyed till 6am, whereas the SVA Dynamic is a brilliant session of vino consumption with your best pals, following a splendid meal at your favourite steakhouse. Talking of red cow, there’s plenty of scarlet leather in the cabin, in fact the red in and out of this Range Rover will be too vulgar for some. As individual touches, I like the red leather sandwiched between the side supports of the seats, the paddle shifters and the ring around the gear selector, but as a combination, it’s all a bit burlesque. It’s like there was a red team and a black team each tasked with leaving their stamp within the vehicle’s cabin. Only on the day of the task, the black team were either suffering from a hangover or the red team had taken a few grams of speed prior to entering the trim shop. If I had sold one of my useful limbs and had managed to put enough fundraisers together in aid of the Mike Trott Dreams Foundation, and consequently found myself spec’ing an SVA Dynamic, I would be tempted by a subtler colourway. Above: There’s no fancy carbon-look cover over the engine like in the SVR, but rest assured that the 550hp supercharged V8 is still there Below: Warp speed is still possible, even if the SVA Dynamic isn’t quite as quick on its toes as the SVR

It’s certainly much better than Madagascar Orange. I guess it’s futile trying to disguise what I’ve been doing with my lunchtimes recently. Sigh. It’s still a Range Rover, with the great ride, the space, the grace, and now very much added pace. Wait – isn’t that Jaguar’s strapline now? If we rein in on the pace for a second, I’d say this is a Range Rover for people who want a bit of added driver focus, and so does Land Rover. It says that the SVR, based on the Sport, is very much about performance, but you’ll never see a performance-optimised Range Rover. The Dynamic name is drafted in to give the daddy Ranger a little bit of an edge. It’s definitely capable of putting you on edge, even if not as outright fast as the SVR. Naturally, when you put your foot down, focus is what you need. A total of 550hp can do that to the mind. Again, 5.1 seconds is all it takes to reach 60mph from a standstill, so about the same time it takes to soil yourself and realise you’re in a 2.5-tonne vehicle shifting towards Boeing take-off speeds. Good job the

Brembo brakes poking through the 22” wheels are strong – they really need to be. The SVA Dynamic is a vehicle that offers you the choice of some fun, but isn’t bothered whichever way you decide to drive to work. You could sit in the back, being driven by one’s driver, or you could saddle up to the controls yourself and enjoy the added engagement on offer. The problem is that the SVR is over £36,000 cheaper. It does everything a Range Rover can do in terms of off-road capability, it plays the part at your social functions and is the practical tool at weekends; plus, when you want to have your cake and eat it, the SVR goes the extra mile to make sure you do. That active exhaust button isn’t just a childish gimmick – it lets you decide how much fun to have. I like that about it. And why spend all that money and go to Blackpool when you can save yourself a substantial sum of cash and go to Las Vegas? If this was in The Matrix, the red pill would be the way forward, but in reality, the truth is the blue pill does everything you need and more.

Landies of the

Scandinavia might seem like a remote part of Europe. But it doesn’t take long to reach by road – and between its sensational scenery, spectacular roads and never-ending gravel trails, it’s a must for you and your Land Rover

Words and Pictures: Peter Girling

Y

ou don’t need to go to Africa to feel like you’re having a proper adventure in your Land Rover. Europe has plenty to offer too – nowhere more so than, Scandinavia, which is a fabulous region to explore. It’s well suited to travels in a Landy, as driving speeds are relaxing – meaning there’s plenty of time to soak up your beautiful surroundings. In the past, getting to Scandinavia used to be quick and easy as there were direct ferries from the UK to Denmark and Norway. But these services ended a few years ago – so now you’ll have to sail to the Netherlands or take a Channel crossing. An overnight crossing from Newcastle to Amsterdam, Hull to Rotterdam or Harwich to Hook of Holland will have you on the road bright and early – whereupon a day’s driving through the Netherlands and Germany will see you at the border with Denmark. A classic Scandinavian route is north to the Arctic Circle and then further again to Nordkapp, Europe’s most northerly point. However, that’s a 5000-mile round trip and mostly all tarmac. We’re focusing here on southern Scandinavia, a region that can be

explored in two leisurely weeks. It’s a hugely attractive area and you’ll want to return again and again. This is especially true as Land Rovers are popular in Scandinavia. You’ll see fully kitted out Defenders loaded with camping gear and canoes, Range Rovers and Discoveries cruising the city streets and faded old Series vehicles still providing sterling service out in the country. A cheery wave is guaranteed!

Denmark Denmark is fairly small and easy going, its countryside gentle and dotted with neat, tidy farms. There’s not a great deal of off-roading, but it’s worth taking time to explore the more remote areas. Take a drive on the beaches near Hirtshals or walk out to the tip of the peninsula near Skagen where the crashing waves from the opposing Skagerrak and Kattegat seas collide. Hirtshals is also the departure point for the only ferry to Iceland and several to Norway. Copenhagen, the capital, is compact and easy to navigate on foot. There’s plenty to see and it’s pretty busy with tourists all year round. It’s possible to get from Denmark to Sweden without taking a ferry. The spectacular Oresund Bridge, near Co-

penhagen, is Europe’s longest combined road and rail bridge. The bridge alone is around five miles long and the crossing also includes a 2.5-mile tunnel.

Sweden Sweden is vast. The interior is studded with a myriad of lakes, from tens of metres wide up to huge inland seas. If you want to visit the capital Stockholm you can escape the tourist throngs by taking a boat cruise around the city, spending an afternoon drifting past the many sights. The coastline is huge, too, with hundreds of small islands. Head inland to the pine forests and you’re in Land Rover country, as you’ll find hundreds of miles of gravel tracks. Most of them are wide and well graded – just watch out for forestry machinery. Like anywhere with lots of lakes and lots of forests, however, there are mosquitos

Midnight Sun

everywhere. In the height of summer, these vicious critters can be a real pest, especially in the early evening. Late spring or early autumn would be best time of year here – but still, make sure you’re packing high-strength repellent, bite relief and non-drowsy antihistamines to keep them at bay.

Norway There aren’t so many gravel roads in Norway, but those that there are pass through breathtaking scenery. Many of these roads have a small fee, but it’s well worth it to be able to drive through the stunning landscapes without any tarmac in sight. Most toll barriers are automated and take cards only. Head to the west coast of Norway and you’ll be rewarded with superb scenery, mirror-like fjords, majestic waterfalls and twisting roads that hug the water’s edge. Take advantage of the

excellent ferries to get around. They’re super-efficient, inexpensive and will save you miles of tarmac. You’ll also get a fabulous view as you cruise across the fjords. Be aware that some Norwegian motorways have electronic tolls. You won’t see any booths as the tolls are collected electronically using number plate recognition. The system is linked to the DVLA database so you’ll eventually receive a bill at home which you can pay online or by card. The main E6 trunk road runs the length of the country and like many Norwegian roads has been vastly improved over the years, with cavernous tunnels and soaring bridges. It is still possible to find the old and now seldom-used roads, which lumber over steep passes and wind through rustic countryside. In addition, you’ll find historic mail routes crossing remote hillsides with beautiful panoramas at

35

every turn. Even in early summer, you may find tracks at higher altitude that have only just been cleared of snow.

Driving Visiting Scandinavia during the summer is a relaxing experience, with long, warm days spent exploring followed by sunny evenings on the campsites chatting about the day’s events. The driving is easy – though one thing to be aware of is that road builders take advantage of the mild weather, meaning you might find yourself delayed by extensive construction work. Roads generally in Scandinavia are of an excellent standard, and Norway in particular has some breathtaking bridges. The Atlantic Road on the west coast has an impressive series of bridges linking a chain of small isContinued on page 38

Slimline – suits you Sir Slimline is all the rage these days isn’t it? Whether it’s the cut of your trousers or the tonic you have with your home-made ‘gin’, slimline is in. And now even your Landy can get the slimline treatment. There are certainly a lot of roof racks to choose from, but some will make your pride and joy look morbidly obese. No, what we need is a ‘Slimline II Roof Rack Kit – Tall’ from Front Runner. It’s for a Defender 110 and is a fullsize cargo carrying rack with its own tray and wind deflector. The tall bit means it has eight legs to mount to the gutter. Why is this, apart from tall and slim being even better than short and slim?

Because it allows space for the camp tables and other accessories you’ve bought from Front Runner to fit underneath the rack. So you can fit a lot of gear up top without it seem-

ing remotely crowded up there. It certainly looks the part but costs £1449 so your wallet can have the slimming treatment too. www.frontrunneroutfitters.com

It’s Behind You Trakke is a British company making ‘stuff’ from its base in Glasgow. Which means that Scotland is very much the proving ground for what is a pretty smart looking range of bags and packs. And they use British components as much as possible, like Harris Tweed and waxed cotton from Scotland, webbing, leather finishing and padding from England, and stainless steel stuff from Wales.

It’s sort of classic meets contemporary, something neatly illustrated by the Assynt 17 backpack. It’s quite like one of those old vintage mountaineering packs, made of waxed cotton, with stainless steel and leather detailing. It comes in a classic array of colours which includes ‘crottle’ which I discover is a sort of rust colour. See, a colour made just for your old restoration project.

Home from Home Yet there are also some very contemporary touches, like the laptop sleeve inside the main 17-litre compartment, plus a number of pockets to keep essentials in. The basic very stylish pack costs £160, but if you want extras like a padded waistband or sternum strap then that’ll be extra. To find these fine products, make trakkes to trakke.co.uk

You know what your Land Rover needs? A chest of drawers. While you’re busy getting away from it all, going off-grid, embracing minimalism, you may as well be suitably comfortable right? If you have a Discovery 3 or 4, then the Big Country Twin Drawer Unit should be in the back of your vehicle. It’s made in South Africa and is suitably roughty toughty. At the same time it’s also fully carpeted at the top, with hard-wearing carpet rather than some swirly flowery design.

It’s easy to put in or take out and you can still access the spare wheel mechanism with it in place. It’s got drawers that are long enough to take shotgun boxes, so that would slightly restore the credibility. And of course it gives you somewhere to store the ornaments and antimacassars that you simply can’t leave home without while going off to explore new horizons. The drawers cost £1308.06 and you’ll find them at Expedition Equipment: www.expedition-equipment.com

38 lands. Forest roads, on the other hand, can get boring after a while, especially if you’re in dense woodland where vistas can be limited. Away from the tarmac, the tracks and trails you’ll find in Scandinavia aren’t too arduous – but mileages can soon clock up. Parts and labour charges here are higher than in the UK, so make sure your Land Rover is in good shape before the trip. Good all-terrain tyres are adequate, unless you’re going

in the depths of winter – when vehicle preparation gets much more complicated and costly. Cabin and engine heaters are essential, especially if you are sleeping in your vehicle. Obviously, winter driving means something altogether more significant in Scandinavia than in Britain. On the road, long hours of darkness and the threat of icy surfaces can make for a tiring and hazardous time, so take regular breaks.

Travel notes Campsites in Scandinavia are generally of a very high standard, with excellent sanitary facilities. Most will have kitchens where you can cook your own food and even small rustic sites may well have barbecue huts and saunas. Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen all have excellent city centre campsites. You can also wild camp easily in Norway and Sweden – just make sure you’re not too near to other habitation and be scrupulous about leaving no trace when you leave. If you’re heading further north towards the Arctic Circle or beyond, remember the Midnight Sun can shine brightly all night long – which could pose a problem for light sleepers. If your tent fabric is lightweight, pack a cheap eye mask. Camping in winter is for hardy souls only; you certainly need to ensure that your tents and bedding are up to scratch. Thankfully, most campsites have small huts for rent. These can be expensive, though, so keep an eye on your budget as costs can soon add up. On the subject of money, be aware that Denmark, Norway and Sweden all have their own currencies. Confusingly, they’re all called kroner and each has its own exchange rate. Pay by credit card where possible to avoid ending up with bulging pockets full of different coins. Bear in mind also that everything you’ve heard about the cost of alcohol here is true. Around the campsite, if you have a favourite tipple, make sure your Land Rover is stocked with supplies from home to avoid breaking the bank. Should you run out, you’ll need to visit the state liquor store as wine, spirits and strong beer aren’t sold in supermarkets. On a more positive note, the local produce is a definite highlight of travelling in Scandinavia. Fish and

39 shellfish feature heavily, of course, and you’ll be able to try elk and reindeer meat too. Eating out can be expensive, though – so camp cooking skills are a must. In summary, Scandinavia is fantastic destination. The driving is easy, the landscapes are jaw-dropping, most folks are laid back and speak excellent English, no visas are required, mobile phones and credit cards work everywhere and, apart from in Norway, fuel prices are on a par with the UK. Don’t let the demise of the direct ferries put you off – Scandinavia is no problem to get to and, after a two-week driving holiday, you’ll return home feeling like you really have explored a different world. Atlas Overland is one of the UK’s leading adventure tour companies. It specialises in small group tours and has a wide variety of destinations in North Africa, Europe and beyond. Its twoweek Scandinavia tour costs £1295 per adult based on two people sharing a vehicle. This includes return North Sea ferry crossings including cabin with sea view and en suite facilities, all campsite fees, all ferries between Germany, Denmark and Sweden, all Norwegian ferries, all private road tolls, Atlas Overland guides and support vehicle on call 24/7. Ruby’s Off Again: Episode Seven There’s seemingly no stopping a Land Rover once it starts to set off on an adventure. Like a snowball gathering snow, Ruby The Landy’s hunger to explore more and more of the world appears boundless – and now her owners have let her loose in Chile

Pictures: Jenny Bright & Gavin Lowrie

H

aving revelled in the salt flats and Lagunas route during their time in Bolivia, Ruby The Landy and her minders hit Chile on 23 October 2016 in a somewhat laboured fashion. Ruby had suffered a broken front shock absorber, so finding a mechan-

ic rocketed straight to the top of the priority list. Their first encounter of Chile would be brief; just the one week before heading for Argentina – but they would see Chile again on numerous later dates. For the time being, however, San Pedro de Atacama would make for a temporary home as they enjoyed a final meal with friends who had accompanied them through to Chile.

As Jen and Gavin’s focus turned back to Ruby, they found no luck in their search for a suitable mechanic and, with Ruby developing a wheel judder that limited them to 25mph, a temporary bush mechanic fix and slow drive to the city of Calama was needed. After the wheels were realigned and a new steering damper failed to cure the issue, a mechanic noticed worn panhard rod bushes. Unfortunately, the parts were not in stock, so another ‘bushcraft’ fix needed to suffice for now. By the time Ruby was roadworthy, a week had passed and it was time to say farewell to Chile as they entered Argentina. The trio would focus on Northern Argentina at this stage, knowing that a flight leaving from Buenos Aires was booked ready for their Antarctica cruise. Getting a taste for the northern cities and visiting the Gaucho Festival held in San Antonio de Areco were key points on the agenda. Following a first night camp in Susques, the group made tracks for Salta and quickly discovered the Argentineans’ love for barbeques. They lined the streets, filled the parks and the smell of singed meat wafted in the air. In Salta, they spent a couple of days absorbing the pretty sights of the town, while the Museum of High Altitude Archaeology showcased an interesting exhibit, namely three mummified children found in 1999 and dating back to the Inca civilisation. The vineyards of Cafayate followed before Jen and Gav took the long drive towards Cordoba. Camping in Villa Carlos Paz where their pitch had

Above: Anyone for seconds? its very own barbecue grill (naturally), they gorged on steak and plump sausages each evening before moving on to wild camp in the Quebrada del Condorito National Park, home to the magnificent Andean condors. Judging by the welcome they received, the Argentineans were happy to keep up the trend of warm-hearted South Americans being so friendly and generous. ‘We then spent a couple of nights in Cordoba, Argentina’s second most populous city,’ says Jen. ‘Cordoba has many beautiful colonial buildings which we walked around on a free walking tour. We also visited the fascinating and moving Museo de la Memoria, a museum dedicated to the memories of the hundreds of people that disappeared between the late 1970s and early 1980s, during Argentina’s Dirty War.’ Jen, Gav and Ruby then made for Rosario, situated on the western shore of the Parana River. This is the birthplace of such characters as Che Guevara and Lionel Messi – so no one famous then! ‘We only spent a day here, visiting the

burial place and monument for Manuel Belgrano, who designed the Argentinean flag, and we saw Che Guevara’s birthplace and statue before taking a stroll along the river,’ describes Gav. One of the group’s main attractions was on the horizon, as Ruby transported her companions to San Antonio de Areco for the Gaucho Festival. ‘In South America, Gauchos are cowboys,’ explains Jen, ‘and we settled at a lovely campsite just outside of town where we were promptly invited to a proper Argentinean barbecue by a friendly family who owned a ranch near Cordoba. Gav just couldn’t resist the prospect of eating half a cow! ‘That evening, the festival put on a fantastic display of traditional folk dancing and music, with Gauchos decorated in their tapered trousers, ponchos and berets,’ says Jen. ‘The next day was scheduled for the big parade and horse-riding displays, but a torrential thunderstorm put a stop to festivities and sadly events were cancelled.’ Still a great experience for our travelling friends, of course. Now, however, Jen, Gav and Ruby found themselves with two weeks to fill prior to their flight from Buenos Aires. Two weeks in Uruguay it is then! ‘We drove to the small town of Fray Bentos,’ recalls Jen. ‘Those of you old enough to remember, Fray Bentos used to make tinned processed meat products, such as pies, corned beef and the OXO cube. Fray Bentos’ heyday was in World War II. As a supplier of meat to the allies, Fray Bentos shipped more than 16 million cans of corned beef to Europe in 1943 alone.’ There’s now a museum dedicated to its former production of meat products and Jen and Gav embarked on a tour

41 Above (from left to right): Che Guevara’s colourful mural in Rosario, the National Monument also found in Rosario, Uruguayan street art found in the capital, Montevideo of the old factory, even wild camping in its grounds. Perhaps the smell of steak and kidney still lingered. Gav finally pulled Jen away the Fray Bentos factory and they headed towards the capital, Montevideo, stopping in the quaint town of Colonia del Sacramento en route. ‘The place is a UNESCO world heritage site and renowned for its historic quarter,’ says Gav. ‘Montevideo is a port city and reminded me a little of

Liverpool with its impressive waterside buildings. Uruguay is only a small country with a population of three million, half of whom live in Montevideo.’ During a long weekend there, Jen and Gav walked the city and gained more knowledge from another couple of museums, one of which focused on the 1972 Andes flight disaster. After the busy environment of Montevideo, Ruby took her friends to the Atlantic coast where the forthcoming

days would be spent relaxing, visiting the settlements of Piriapolis, Punta del Este and La Paloma. ‘We had a day trip to the hamlet of Cabo Palonia,’ says Jen. ‘This is a protected area and only accessible on foot or by a huge off-road truck, which drives you there through the sand dunes. Obviously, we opted for the truck and had a great half-hour journey there and back, bouncing through the dunes.’

Jen and Gav witnessed the huge colony of sea lions and climbed the large lighthouse for a few memorable vistas, but now it was time to make tracks to Buenos Aires. ‘It was a short, but very sweet visit to Uruguay!’ smiles Jen. Ruby was now left at a storage facility just outside of Buenos Aires, with Jen and Gav saying goodbye to her for over a month as the moment they had been waiting for had almost arrived: their Antarctica trip.

‘We travelled to Buenos Aires, where we stayed in an Airbnb for nine days before flying to Ushuaia, the southern tip of Argentina, where we would meet our boat,’ explains Gav. ‘We were as giddy as kippers!’ Now seven months into their travels, the list of explored places was becoming rather impressive, but the next leg was something especially close to the hearts of these overlanders. Read on in the September issue of The Landy.

Scilly Workshop Tales: Part Two

Following his discovery of the Isle of Scilly fire tender, and hence the start of a new restoration project, we catch up with Martin Lear as he brings the final elements of his Series III back together Words and Pictures: Martin Lear

fter the Land Rover’s smaller body panels, interior fittings, doors and wings had been prepared and sprayed,

it was time for the larger sections – namely the bulkhead, butt and roof sections. These were transported individually to the spray shop, then, following a suitably lengthy period for the paint to harden, returned by trailer to the storage unit.

After all the various prepping and spraying was complete, right down to the door hinges, it was time to start the rebuild. The whole project now had a different direction. From the use of stainless nuts and bolts wherever practicable, to the re-piping of the brakes and clutch, the fitting of new springs and shocks, and the replacement of worn perishables with new parts – it was all now the (expensive) norm. On that subject, don’t believe anyone who tells you that fitting new leaf springs to an unladen chassis is the way to do it. Without the weight of the engine and body, the springs simply do not spread, and the movement that takes place when the bulkhead, engine and gearbox are fitted, is restricted by the spring hangers having Continued overleaf

good tonne or so, consisting of old batteries, brake discs, flywheels and sundry heavy lumps, while periodically cranking up two ratchet straps, connected to the rear axle and front spring hangers. Even so, it was a period of several weeks before the front prop could be connected and the tension eased on the straps, which were tight enough to play tunes on, when the weights came off. Happily, at that point the butt was fitted. The next 18 months was a long process of finding apparently insig-

nificant but vital small components from various boxes and breakers and gradually moving the whole process on, when not dealing with holidays and normal life, that is. At the end of 2014 I had a real stroke of luck and managed to obtain an identical pump to the one the fire engine would have carried, a Coventry Godiva pump, based on the Lotus 7 petrol engine. Not only was it the right pump but it had its own bit of history. It was the pump previously fitted on the Austin Gypsy fire tender, formerly based on St Michael’s Mount in the late ‘80s – another project perhaps. In April 2015 the wiring loom was in, though not the dash. The engine had been fired up, despite parts of the throttle assembly being missing and attention began turning towards making the butt weatherproof, as it was continually in and out of the workshop. The doors were hung, locks fitted and, after the purchase of many packets of small screws and aluminium retaining strips, the windows, which had been wrapped in towels for seven years, began to be fitted. How can you lose a piece of glass that has been stored, undisturbed, for seven years? I did. Happily, two days in the backyard led me to James’ Dad, Bill’s, ‘Series III glass stash’. By the May Bank Holiday, a full ‘stash’ of glass was ready and waiting to be fitted. With the help of my mate Dave, the glass was fitted over a few days. Despite the inevitable delivery of wrong and incomplete fitting kits, and the need to drill and screw 18 small channel and retaining strip screws on each door, the job proved very satisfying. We had now arrived at a critical point: we knew the engine would run

but would it drive? After an initial scare, due to the overdrive being ‘mid gear’ and having mislaid the gear lever, the fire engine chugged slowly up and down the estate. The next phase was fitting door seals and then, with the assistance of ‘J’, the auto electrician, the dash could be fitted. This was not without complications, as it was a modified Defender bulkhead and there were a few subtle structural differences which prevented straightforward fitting. Meanwhile, my collection of seatbelts was examined and the original non-inertia belts pronounced as ready for fitting. By now it was the end of the first week of June and the interior was approaching completion. By the end of the second week in June the seats and belts had been fitted and the modifications to the lower dash had enabled the rest of the dash and steering wheel to be installed. Predictably, this was all too good to be true and the next start-up was noticable for its silence. Two small screws, which ensure that the steering lock/ ignitiuon barrel stay in one piece, had not been fitted (not me guv). In the midst of the wrestling match, which was required to fit the dash, they had seperated. And you guessed it, most of the dash fittings had to be undone, but eventually we had an ignition system, the engine fired up and the four-wheel drive and overdrive were engaged and tested. In the same period I had persuaded Angela, who happens to be an artist, that she would really enjoy climbing a dodgy step ladder and painting the ladder rack. Unhappily, there are no

Land Rover Defender 6x6 HC Conversion

The Defender HC Tandem 6x6 Walking Beam (TWB) suspension upgrade consists of a tandem axle that can be quickly installed on to donor chassis, converting the rear axle into a powered tandem walking beam suspension. This conversion vastly improves the overall on and off road performance of the standard 110 Defender vehicle providing increased payload capacity by as much as one and a half times, combining increased dynamics stability and overall braking performance. The unladen weight of the 6x6 chassis cab is only 2180 kg. Fitted as standard to the vehicle is a heavy duty limited slip rear differential, with inboard vented calliper disc brakes.

photographs of the event but let me assure you, her athletisism and accurate brush work were much admired. By the end of the 15th the electrical connections to the wipers and so on had yet to be tested but the theory was that, once this had been done, the dash could have its final fit and attention would then turn to adjusting the suspension, steering and brakes, before the wings and final body parts were fitted. That was the theory. Sometimes the most difficult phase is that final push to get over the finish line. When I say, ‘final push’, I also mean in the literal sense, as there was much pushing and shoving to come, but the final stages were within reach. There was, for example, the saga of the dash. Difficult to fit in the first place, the final triumphant fitting was somewhat spoilt by the discovery that the intended ‘in to out’ movement of the wipers proved to be ‘out to in’. Not much of a problem, surely? After disassembling virtually the whole dash, it proved possible to reverse the driving gears on the notorious drive worm, leaving only the problem of how to reassemble the dash and retain such items as the driver’s windscreen vent, in working order, with the air pipe having fallen off… Eventually the wings came out of their wrappers and were hung. But there were no wing to bulkhead securing brackets and no retainer for the bonnet stay. A quick phone call and a trip to Leedstown Landrovers for second-hand parts and the final push was on again. Sidelight and flasher light holes too worn to safely secure the new fittings… a quick trip to Keith, the fabricator, and within an hour, four precision-pierced backing plates are ready for drill-

ABC DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUES LTD

Diagnostic Techniques Ltd

The ABC Elite is a brand new dealer level JLR tool - a standalone diagnostic for Land Rover and Jaguar that gives the technician or Diy-er the ability to carry out a list of functions without any in-depth knowledge. The ethos of ABC Diagnostic Techniques is to listen to the customer and remove the fear of modern day diagnosis, coding and programming. It has 6 primary buttons which give total control and ease of use thus enabling the user to get the job done in rapid time: fault code read and clear, adaptation resets, DEF fluid re calibrate, air suspension ride height calibration along with coding and the ability to programme. We are proud to launch this new product to market. This is the go to tool... to get the job done... if you are serious about first time quality repairs this has to be in your workshop.

ing. It seemed very much like I was becoming increasingly accustomed to spending money! Over the next couple of days, the side, flasher and headlights went in. Unfortunately the sealed beam headlights I had were not viable and the purchase of a set of buckets and a pair of halogen lights was necessary. When the bonnet was fixed in place on Friday 25 July, we decided to trailer the fire engine to the vintage and steam rally at St Buryan on the following day. This was an introduction to a bizarre new world. Sixty four tractors in one field?! Plus an amazing vari-

ety of vehicles, ranging from steam road-rollers to small static pumps. Suffice to say, the fire engine, whilst being too late for the parade, was much admired. A couple of people who used to live on Tresco, remembered it, and one lady even claimed to have started it in 1985. My reward: a lot of pleasant chat and on the Monday, a bloke who was exhibiting a Series IIA at the rally turned up at the 4x4 centre with a battery carrier and air cleaner holder for me, and leaving before anyone could even get his name! Into the final few days and the finishing touches were being added here

and there before a last bit of fettling prior to completion. A few weeks later and the fire tender was MoT’d, insured and on the road (tax exempt) and, as a thank you to James, had been driven by him at a wedding, taking the bride and groom from the church. There was an issue with the pump but thanks to the local fire service, the issue was resolved. My intention is to show both vehicles (the 109 and 110) at rallies in the future and, throughout 2016, that was exactly what I did, showcasing the finished (and working) vehicle at a number of events. It’s been a long, interesting, enjoyable, tiring, fun, unforgettable journey!

uxury comes in many shapes and forms, from the towels you have hanging in your bathroom, to the type of coffee you drink to help get you through the working day. One vehicle, however, has always been synonymous with the word luxury: The Range Rover. Here we focus on the very earliest incarnation that mixed the highest levels of extravagance with unrivalled off-road capability. We’ve called upon the expert advice of those at Alex Engineering in Hertfordshire, and specifically Andy Walker who has a soft spot for these tremendous Green Oval machines. ‘Like many people, I think a Tardis would be useful, so you could travel back in time and buy all the parts that are now impossible to get!’ says Andy. ‘Rust is a big issue with the Classic Range Rover – it pretty much corrodes

everything to do with the body shell,’ explains Andy. ‘The alloy panels don’t escape the rot worm either. So a good look at them where they join the shell is most advisable.’ The earliest variant of Range Rover came with the Buick-derived 3.5-litre V8, a unit that Andy believes is a ‘fantastic thing’, plus parts are still available to help rebuild them. ‘They did suffer with poor quality oil back in the seventies, so most were very badly clogged up with oil sludge by the time they had clocked up a hundred thousand miles. The gearbox is also a lovely thing; fairly robust, but needing regular oil changes once again to keep them in the very best condition,’ states Andy. You could have your gearbox rebuilt, but the amount it costs is likely to bring you to your knees. Overdrive units were very popular, but the majority of them around today are worn out.

‘Unless you have a supply of new parts, it’s very difficult to rebuild them. With axles, however, most parts are still available – some items new, others you’ll have to settle for second-hand. They were reliable units when powered by the 3.5 V8 engine, too,’ reveals Andy. Inside, cabins can start to show wear after prolonged use, with seats ripping and headlinings frequently sagging. But there are trim specialists that can offer a suitable refresh, just don’t ask them to find you any plastic seats, as they may be looking for a while! ‘The bodywork now is only available as old new stock parts, and that’s if you are very lucky. More likely you’ll be on the lookout for decent second-hand bits once again, although some steel repair parts are available.’ Classic Range Rovers can be a good investment and are a vehicle you can comfortably drive today. You just might have to get used to searching for parts.

Above: Already an ancient power unit before the Range Rover even surfaced, the 3.5-litre V8 was derived from a Buick motor with 130hp in its earliest form, thanks to a detuned, under-stressed setup. Fortunately, the Rover V8 has always been a well-received engine Right: Alex Engineering is a small family-run business located in Long Marston, near Tring in Hertfordshire. Series I (1948-1958)

I

f you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go. The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike. Its 1940’s engineering gives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once

were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then a finished example will fetch mega bucks. Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished examples now retailing where they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game. The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets. But can you really put a price on such an icon?

Series II/IIA (1958-1971)

I

n 1958, the second-generation Land Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders. Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts. The prices are on the increase, however, as these 50-year-old vehicles start to come into their own as a collector’s

item. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2.0-litre diesel, were underpowered and noisy. The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of refinement over the Series I. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks.

Series III (1971-1985)

F

ollowing on from the Series IIA, the Series III emerged in 1971 with a few cosmetic tweaks to freshen up the model. Headlights were shifted out to the wings in-line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top of the bulkhead – not sure it’s a five stars on the Euro NCAP scale, though. The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar

to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout its production, although in 1980 the 2.25 motors switched to a more durable five bearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with. They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.

Lightweight (1968-1984)

P

ossibly the ugly duckling of the Series Land Rover family – but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t find much love for the Series Lightweights. These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance that does divide opinion on occasion. To mimic the civvy Series ma-

chines, the SIII LWT – built from 1972 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings. These Series Lightweights throw up an extra dimension to Land Rover ownership, with military history and touches often machine-gunning the vehicle. It means you get a Land Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd.

Forward Controls (1962-1978)

O

nly serious enthusiasts need continue reading here. Ownership of any Forward Control is not for the faint-hearted. These leviathans are expensive to run and trying to get hold of some of the parts can be, quite frankly, a bit of a nightmare! Clubs can help here, though, as is often the case with any Land Rover. These vehicles offer substantial

payloads if that’s the sort of thing you’re after, but will also tick the boxes for huge, unnecessary and hilariously addictive fun. If you’re going to go the whole hog then why not buy a 101FC. You’ll have a V8 engine harping away underneath you (literally) and people are likely to clear out of your way when they see you coming in their mirrors. Surely that’s reason enough to buy one?

Ninety/One Ten (1983-1990)

T

he icon of the 4x4 world. This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you just about anywhere in the world. Early examples of the Ninety and One Ten are worth keeping hold of, providing they’re in good condition – but you’ll be searching far and wide for examples that are. This was the birth of the Defender, despite not being christened officially

until 1990, and as such these Land Rovers had coil-sprung suspension, new engines – although they were still terribly underwhelming – and offroad capability that has still yet to be matched today. A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5TD version with low miles and good history. They’re robust and as simple as they come.

Defender 200Tdi (1990-1994)

I

n 1990, the Defender name emerged and with it a cementing of a legacy that already stretched back over 40 years. This was... is the best 4x4 by far. It carried the Tdi badge for the first time and meant that no longer was a Defender being powered by a feeble hamster in a wheel. If you’re in the market for a 200 Defender, though, you might get a 200 unit but it might not necessarily

be from a Defender. Replacing blown units with a Disco 200Tdi is popular, so check the arrangement of the turbo and manifold. The 200Tdi is probably the best for off-roaders, so many of these vehicles will have been worked hard. Some owners have now started restoring these vehicles, meaning a premium price – but can you really put a price on perfection...?

Defender 300Tdi (1994-1998)

A

fter the 200 followed the 300Tdi. Essentially, this was a revised version of the predecessor – perhaps a little more refined – but still with the same durability. These engines, providing they are properly maintained, can last for decades. Look around for one with full service history and you could find yourself a keeper. Some Tdi Defenders have received

galvanised chassis and even bulkheads, and these are the type of Defender you should be after. A futureproof Landy. By the time the 300Tdi came out, Land Rover was now giving the Defender power steering as standard and disc brakes all-round. It’s the little things after all. Arguably the company’s greatest engine, balancing performance and practicality. The Defender in its prime.

Defender Td5 (1998-2007)

F

ollowing on from the Tdi era, Land Rover issued the Defender with its Td5 engine from 1998 to 2007. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure that any mods have been done properly. Remaps, EGR valve deletes and uprated intercoolers are a few examples

of what many have been subject to. Lots of power doesn’t always mean happy faces. The rear of the chassis has frequently been called into question, so protect the rear crossmember if it’s in good shape, or else face the consequences. With minimal electrics, the Td5 Defender is still a DIY machine and you’ll be working on one of Land Rover’s most notable masterpieces.

Defender TDCi (2007-present)

T

he last of the Defenders were fitted with Ford Transit engines – first the 2.4 TDCi, followed by the 2.2 TDCi, brought in to meet Euro V emission standards and keep the Defender alive for another few years. Sadly, these engines denoted the Defender’s swansong, the twilight of its days. They were fitted with six-speed gearboxes, still had phenomenal offroad capability and even made the

Defender a nice place to be. But they were still very much Defenders. The era of blinging also began and you can find special editions out there costing obscene amounts of money. You will pay a premium for these Defenders, especially since the end of production. But if you can grab a 2.2 TDCi and start preserving it now, you may well never see depreciation. We’re no financial advisors, though...

£2500-£15000 Versions: Ninety (‘84-’90), One Ten, 127 (‘83-’90). 2.25 4cyl petrol (‘83-’85), 3.5 V8 (‘83-’90), 2.5NA 4cyl diesel (‘84-’90), 2.5 4cyl petrol (‘85-’90), 2.5TD (‘86-’90). Pros: Good ones are now worth saving, same ability as Tdi Defenders Cons: Not many left in good condition, engines underpowered

£3200-£25000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (19901994). 200Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel.

Pros: Legendary off-road, one of the very best engines, old-school electrics Cons: Genuine Defender 200Tdi units are getting rare, many have been used hard, corrosion

£3500-£30000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (19941998). 300Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel.

Pros: A slightly more refined Tdi powerplant, the best? Cons: Erm... erm... hmm, this is hard

£4000-£20000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (19982007). Td5 2.5 5cyl turbo-diesel.

Pros: Off-road capability, power, reliability (generally) Cons: Rear chassis, premium prices at the moment

£8000-£60000+ Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (20072016). 2.4 TDCi (‘07-’12), 2.2 TDCi (‘12-’16).

Pros: Better emissions (marginally), more creature comforts, same offroad prowess Cons: Price, more electrics, last of the breed

Freelander 1 (1997-2006)

W

e haven’t always held the Freelander 1 in the highest regard here at The Landy, but as market prices constantly change, so too can our opinion on certain vehicles. With examples attainable from as little as £500, the Freelander 1 represents a cheap gateway into Landy ownership. There are a few issues to be aware of, though, such as the viscous coupling, which is expensive to replace and can

be upset by simply having mismatched tyres on your axles. The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures, but today’s replacements are much more robust. The V6 is thirsty and the 2.0Di is gutless, so opt for a TD4 – but check the condition of the injectors first. Buy an FL1 and you even get a Landy that’s decent off-road and doesn’t carry the usual trait of rusting after five minutes.

Freelander 2 (2006-2015)

M

ost people will turn their noses up at Freelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true Land Rovers. But while you should turn your nose up at the FL1, the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think. Because of it being replaced by the Discovery Sport, the FL2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels of refinement, a strong 2.2-litre

four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make for a great family vehicle. Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there. Prices are now falling thanks to the Freelander name disappearing from the production line, but for £10,000 you can now get a capable all-rounder that is actually pretty adept off-road and yet still economical to run.

51

£500-£6600 Versions: 1.8 4cyl petrol (‘97-’05), 2.0Di 4cyl diesel (‘97-’00), TD4 2.0 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘00-’06), 2.5i V6 petrol (‘00-’05). Pros: Cheap to buy, no major rust issues, surprisingly good off-road Cons: There are better Land Rovers out there, FL2 showed the FL1 how it should have been done

£3700-£28000 Versions: 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel, available in two- or four-wheel drive, 3.2 V6 petrol (‘07-’09).

Pros: Better off-road than you may anticipate, reliability, refinement, economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing

52

Range Rover Classic (1970-1996)

T

he Range Rover Classic is one of those vehicles that you could theoretically still use everyday in the 21st Century. If you’re running a V8, however, that may not be such a wise idea. Classic Range Rovers still provide a relatively refined and great drive today, but they can be thirsty if you’re not in one of the various turbo-diesel examples. That said, if you own one and it’s

in good condition – look after it, as it will only appreciate. These vehicles are popular with collectors. Unfortunately, in terms of spare parts, many have succumb to corrosion or have been abused off-road to the point of no return. While an early ‘70s Classic may not be attainable for everyone, tidy examples of the late four-door versions can make for an equally tidy investment.

Range Rover P38A (1994-2002)

M

any people believe the P38A Range Rover to be a bit of a menace – and often it’s completely justified. Lights on the dashboard, air suspension failure, head gasket failure... the list can really continue. Still, it’s not all doom and gloom with the P38. In fact, if you find one in good working order, it’s sensational. Service history is a must, and if you’re going to own one then some

diagnostic equipment is going to be a better companion than a spanner. Avoid the diesel variant as the engine was adopted from a BMW saloon and isn’t up to the task of the extra weight a Range Rover carries. Go for a 4.6 HSE, it’s actually more economical than the 4.0 V8 and you’ll get all the toys (working or not). Or you could try and find an anniversary model or even a Holland & Holland...

Range Rover L322 (2002-2012)

C

ompared to the P38, the L322 Range Rover was a saint. Generally. Its electronic aids were far less temperamental and it delivered a new level of luxury to four-wheeled motoring. The Td6 receives mixed reviews: some say it’s underpowered while others say it’s the best of the bunch. Common sense would steer you towards a TDV8, either the 3.6 or 4.4, but these are the L322s holding out

for strong money. Notably, the petrol V8s are lingering with very appealing price tags, but don’t think running one would be cheap. As with many 21st Century Land Rovers, they have lost their accessability for the home mechanic. Drivetrain faults are becoming more frequent, so you need to look for that FSH. As a car, however, it’s probably all the car you’ll ever need.

Range Rover L405 (2012-present)

I

f you want the very best in automotive luxury, then look no further. The latest incarnation of Land Rover’s flagship Range Rover weighs a whopping 400kg less than its predecessor thanks to the use of an aluminium body, which helps on mpg – although owning one of these suggests that your cash flow isn’t particularly an issue. This is the last word in elegance and majestic motoring. All the engines

supply copious amounts of power to your right foot, while the L405 hasn’t lost any of its off-road pedigree... even if taking one off-road is like asking your alcoholic friend to a wine-testing session. They could comfortably partake, but probably shouldn’t. Prices are still only right for Premier League footballers and people with a link to the royal family. If you fit into that category, then we envy you.

RR Sport 1 (2005-2013)

M

uch of the Range Rover Sport was borrowed from the Disco 3, in fact it shared virtually identical underpinnings, whereas today’s RR Sport uses actual Range Rover foundations. Nevertheless, Land Rover put a Range Rover in a tracksuit and attempted to make a handler out of it. To some extent they succeeded, although it’s no sports car despite what it says on the back of the vehicle.

It can play the leisure vehicle very well, though, and will go off-road like the best of them. If you’re going to buy one, then you need to love it for itself, becausse a Discovery of the same era is more practical, while a full-fat Range Rover is always going to carry an extra layer of prestige. They’re still a good all-rounder, though, and now relatively affordable.

£1500-£50000+ Versions: Two-door (‘70-’85), four-door (‘81-’96), LSE (‘92-’96). 3.5 V8 petrol (‘70-’86), 3.5 EFI V8 petrol (‘86-’89), 3.9 EFi V8 (‘89-’96), 2.4 VM turbo-diesel (‘86-’92), 200Tdi (‘92-’94), 300Tdi (‘94-’96). Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust (again), availability of parts for early models, V8 thirst

£600-£11000 Versions: 4.0 V8 petrol, 4.6 V8 petrol, 2.5 6cyl turbo-diesel.

Pros: Luxury, price, a Land Rover that doesn’t rust. Could even P38 prices rise soon? Cons: Electrics. Nuff said

£4000-£40000 Versions: 3.0 Td6 (‘02-’06), 4.4 V8 petrol (‘02-’07), 3.6 TDV8 (‘06-’10), 4.4 TDV8 (‘10-’12), 4.2 supercharged V8 petrol (‘05-’09), 5.0 supercharged V8 petrol (‘09-’12).

Pros: Great off-road, luxury, image, TDV8 powerplants Cons: Your maintenance bill

£45000-£150000 Versions: 3.0 TDV6, 4.4 SDV8, 5.0 supercharged V8 petrol, 3.0 SDV6 hybrid (‘14-present).

Pros: Styling, engines, capability at pretty much everything Cons: Price

£7000-£40000 Versions: 2.7 TDV6 (‘05-’09), 3.0 TDV6 (‘09-’11), 3.0 SDV6 (‘11-’12), 4.4 V8 petrol (‘05-’07), 3.6 TDV8 (‘07’10), 4.2 supercharged V8 (‘05-’09), 5.0 supercharged V8 (‘09-’12). Pros: Decent performance from both engines and chassis, a lot of car for your money Cons: Not as practical as a Disco, not as prestigious as a proper Rangey

RR Sport 2 (2013-present)

T

he second-generation Range Rover Sport has also been on a diet to save over 400kg, just like the daddy Range Rover. That means that even this big bruiser is relatively economical when spec’d with the SDV6 motor. Some won’t like the vulgar and flamboyant posture, while others will adhere to the smart, yet mean styling. But no one can knock the Sport for its

performance. It feels incredibly light for such a big car, and if you’ve robbed a bank and can afford the SVR version, it’s as good round a race track as it is on a green lane. The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Removing limbs is possibly the most feasible option, or wait ten years and see if the prices have come tumbling down off those high pedestals.

53

£43000-£130000 Versions: 3.0 SDV6, 4.4 SDV8, 5.0 supercharged V8, 3.0 SDV6 Hybrid. Range Rover Sport SVR 5.0 supercharged V8 (‘15-present).

Pros: Feels light considering weight, engines, almost as luxurious as its bigger brother Cons: You’ll need deep pockets

RR Evoque (2011-present)

W

hen the Range Rover Evoque was launched, it signalled Jaguar Land Rover’s intent on hitting the mass market. And given that the Evoque is their fastest-selling vehicle to-date, they’ve clearly done the job. That doesn’t mean it’s a hit with purists. They don’t much like the fact Victoria Beckham was involved in the designing of it, nor that it is the polar opposite to a Defender.

LAND ROVER T H E E V E RY D AY C L A S S I C

It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac, but it would rather not go down that route. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and because there are so many out there, they have decent residuals. Go for a five-door with the new Ingenium engine, and make it the 4WD version. The 2WD model may be eco-friendly but what is a Range Rover without four-wheel drive?

£14000-£48000 Versions: 2.2 SD4 (‘11-’15), 2.0 Si4 4cyl petrol, 2.0 TD4 (‘15-present).

Pros: Economy, handling, beats rivals off-road Cons: Not as practical as the new Discovery Sport

Discovery 1 (1989-1998)

T

he earliest version of the Discovery was aimed purely at providing a middle ground between the agricultural Defender and the luxury, upper-class Range Rover. It carried much of the Defender’s capabilities, but added more refinement and a driving experience more suitable to families – but without a Range Rover price tag. Blessed with the same wonderful

Tdi engines, the Discovery saved Land Rover and hit back at offerings from other nations by being an affordable all-rounder. And that still holds true even today. Early Discovery 1s in fine condition are now classics and will continue to appreciate. We would recommend trying to find a tidy and later 300Tdi example, but watch out for body rust – the boot floor, arches and wings etc.

Discovery 2 (1998-2004)

F

ollowing on from the first-generation Discovery, in 1998 Land Rover gave its family SUV some minor cosmetic tweaks and a whole new power unit in the shape of the Td5. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure any mods have been done properly. You can also buy a V8, but

the fuel bill isn’t going to be welcome, plus they’re more temporamental. Unlike on the D1, its the chassis that’s the problem, not the body. We all know that Discos make for a great tow car, and consequently many of the rear chassis on D2s have dipped their rears into the sea. Not all of them live to tell the tale... Get a later example for more creature comforts and difflocks too.

Discovery 3/4 (2004-present)

T

he Discovery went through a dramatic revamp for its launch in 2004, but it came out the other side as one hell of a vehicle. Greatly improved in terms of power and refinement, the Disco 3 received the relatively economical 2.7 TDV6 engine (although the thirsty 4.4 V8 petrol was an option) and became the first Land Rover to be given Terrain Response. If you need one vehicle in

your life, this could be the one that ticks the most boxes at once. Be weary of maintenance costs, especially as you approach the 105,000mile/seven-year mark that means the timing belt is due – it’s a body-off job! The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines are even better, with monumental amounts of torque. Luxury has also increased significantly in later examples. A later SDV6 model is best.

Discovery 5 (2017-present)

L

aunched just a couple of months ago, this latest Discovery is still yet to hit the UK roads on mass. Land Rover needed to improve economy in particular with this edition of the Disco, and having chopped 480kg from the kerbweight, it would seem their proficiency in the use of lightweight technologies is only getting better and better. We’ve yet to drive the latest Discov-

ery, but expectations are high – especially as this will be Land Rover’s most capable SUV in production. New engines look promising on paper, and Land Rover has listened to customers regarding the infotainment system. It will remain to be seen whether the changes have quenched the thirst of the critics, though. We reckon the base Sd4 model could turn out to provide all you really need.

Discovery Sport (2015-present)

B

rought in to replace the Freelander 2, the Discovery Sport was the vehicle that turned the Discovery brand into a family. It has come to be so much more than a re-badged Freelander, though. For starters, the Discovery Sport has seven seats (just), drives better than a Freelander 2 and is now more refined thanks to the Ingenium Td4 engine. Land Rover is now churning out

substantial units of the baby Disco, now even matching the Evoque for pace as one of the fastest-selling vehicles they make. It’s a more usable vehicle than the Evoque, though, and carries less of the feministic stigma that often surrounds the Evoque. Grab a cleverly-spec’d SE Tech for a car that can be as practical as a daddy Disco, but for a more attractive price.

£500-£3500 Versions: 200Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘89-’94), 300Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘94-’98), 3.5 V8 (‘89-’93), 3.9 V8 (‘94-’98). Pros: Almost as every bit as good as the Defender off-road, price, practicality Cons: The body rusts like it’s been doused in sea water

£1500-£7000 Versions: Td5 2.5 5cyl turbo-diesel, 4.0 V8.

Pros: Td5 power and reliability, great all-rounder, better comfort than D1, diff locks for ‘03 onwards Cons: Rear chassis crumbles like its dessert namesake

DIESEL RUBICON NOT FOR B RITAIN Holy grail for off-roaders remains LHD only • Better news from n ext-gen Wrangler Limits on UK supply to end as production capacity is doubled for next Wrangler

S

ince the arrival of the Jeep Wrangler JK in 2006, enthusiasts in Britain have wished the factory would combine the 2.8 CRD diesel engine with the Rubicon off-road spec package. It now does – but while there’s no apparent engineering barrier to doing so in right-hand drive, the company has confirmed that a Rubicon diesel won’t be available in the UK. The latest example of a diesel Rubicon to be shown in public appeared on the Jeep stand at Geneva in March, in the shape of a new special-edition version of the vehicle. Named the Recon, this gains a stronger front axle and

heavy-duty cast diff covers, adding yet more resilience to what is already a uniquely capable off-road vehicle. Further enhancements include a vented Power Dome bonnet, beneath which buyers on what we can still just about call mainland Europe will have a choice between the 2.8 CRD and 284bhp, 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 petrol engines. Here in Britain, only the latter will be available, mated to a five-speed auto gearbox as standard. Sales of the Rubicon Recon are now being rolled out across Jeep’s European markets. Prices are yet to be announced, however Jeep says it will be available in a wide range of paint colours.

Mini’s Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 hybrid will cost from £31,585 (before the government’s plug-in car grant) when it hits the road on 24 June. The 224bhp petrol-electric SUV claims 134.5mpg, 49g/km and a zero-emissions range of up to 25 miles.

Y on from aro LER ti GALres: off-roared amc ud… 14 | MAY 2017

As if to taunt British Wrangler fans yet further, Jeep’s stand at Geneva also featured this eye-catching modified Rubicon – diesel-engined, naturally. The vehicle’s purpose was to demonstrate Mopar’s ONE off-road accessory pack. Featuring a 2” suspension lift, steering damper and 265/75R17 Hankook all-terrains on cast alloy rims, this kit is now available through Jeep’s dealer network for 2-door and 4-door Rubicon models – even though in the UK, the vehicle itself is not.

tu o In pic ud and m m mud,

vehi Simply getting hold of vehicles has long been a problem own for would-be Wrangler owners in the UK – and with the demise of the Land Rover Defender, there are more of them than ever. Jeep has admitted that supply here needs to improve – and the company’s boss Michael Manly recently confirmed next-gen that ahead of the next-generation JL model starting production this autumn, the factory is gearing up for a near-100% rise in output. The JL will come to the UK in 2018, with a double-cab pick-up version due to follow a year later. Specific model plans here remain unknown, however the US market is getting its first ever diesel – prompting optimism that when it comes here, the new Wrangler will at last be available with the right engine in Rubicon form. Wran Prices for the new Wrangler are a long way from being finalised, however with better supply it is to be hoped that they will be more realistic than at present. The cheapest Wrangler currently costs £33,925 – almost double what it did when the current model was launched ten years ago.

New 1.9-litre Isu zu D-Max for 2017

4x4 NEWS Ssangyong XAVL will take aim at Disco Sport

NEW THIS M

Medium-sized seven-seat SUV promises modern tech and real off-road ability SSANGYONG’S OFF-ROAD HERITAGE continues to be writ large in its latest concept vehicle, the XAVL. A seven-seater based on 2015’s XAV concept, this will go into production in the near future. Sitting between the current Korando and soon-to-be-replaced Rexton, Ssangyong says the XAVL will be ‘an authentic off-road SUV’. It will be available in 1.5-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel forms, each with a choice of transmissions. Inside, the vehicle promises a wide range of high-tech features. Major functions can be controlled remotely via a smartphone app, the passenger seats have a wi-fi hotspot and Link to Home technology allows you to warm up the oven, operate the central heating and so on from in the cabin. Outside, the XAVL has a ‘tough, masculine exterior’. In the words

of Ssangyong boss Johng-sik Choi, it ‘takes its design inspiration from our iconic Korando model of the

1990s.’ We’ve included a picture of said Korando here so you can see the similarities for yourself…

Ssangyong has also revised its current Korando, with a new-look front end and a tough interior which can ‘handle the rough and tumble of family life.’ The vehicle now features LED running lights, 18” diamond-turned alloys and a more comfortable steering wheel. Options include a choice of 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines and manual and auto gearboxes. Four-wheel drive is on offer, as are several other safety features. These updates will see the Korando through to the end of production; Ssangyong’s smallest SUV is due to be replaced two years from now.

Audi’s SQ7 is famous for the electrically powered 48-volt compressor allowing its 4.0 TDI engine to deliver 435bhp and 664lbf.ft from just 1000rpm. But the system also has a future in the company’s petrol-engined products – the first of which is the Q8 Sport Concept. A four-seat coupe-SUV, this features a 3.0 TFSI petrol engine with the 48v changer in a mild hybrid system developing 470bhp and 516lbf.ft. As well as allowing a 4.7-seconds 0-62 time, Audi says this drivetrain gives the Q8 a range of more than 745 miles. Audi says the TFSI-based hybrid system will be used on a wide range of its models in the future. The Q8, meanwhile, is strongly tipped to spawn a production model which will go on sale around a year from now.

Peugeot’s second-generation 3008 has been named Car of the Year 2017. The new SUV has already been ordered by almost 100,000 customers across Europe – however only a few choose the Hybrid4 model, which is the sole version with all-wheel drive.
