GBLRS Delights Record Crowds
O
n 27 November, the Great British Land Rover Show returned and opened its doors at Stoneleigh Park once more to witness a stampede of visitors descend upon the two-hall spectacular. Over 5,000 Land Rover fanatics, enthusiasts and aficionados came to seek out festive bargains, parts and accessories to play with over the winter, and take in all the Green Oval metal on show, in what was a record attendance for the show. Exhibitors showcased the very best in products for Land Rovers, from roof racks to bushes; lights to oil – you name it, the GBLRS had it! In fact, one thing Stoneleigh certainly had was a site full of Land Rovers thanks to you the readers. Honest-
ly, anyone would think there was some major Land Rover bash on. Of course, seeing all those Land Rovers turn up meant the organisers had to rearrange the parking so the Landies got pride of place, naturally. Every imaginable machine ever to leave Solihull seemed to be parked up wherever there was a free speck of tarmac. And when you had all finished parking, sparks were flying over on the Plasma Part demonstration stand, goodie bags were being dished out on the door, including your needto-know show guide, and then a star-studded line-up of all sorts of Land Rovers lay in wait. The show was a real spectacle and, given the time of year, the whole venue was rocking with festive cheer.
Let’s face it, when you’ve got two halls brimmed enough to give a Jeep owner Land Roveritis, you’re bound to be a little merry! It is at this point that the organisers would like to say a massive thank you to every exhibitor, visitor, man, woman and child (and dog) who came along, supported the show and made it what it was. So thank you to you all! The good news is that we can all do it again this coming spring. The organisers have confirmed the date for this year’s opening Land Rover festival, which will return to Stoneleigh Park on Sunday 23 April. Be sure to put the date in your diary and look out for ticket information on the Great British Land Rover Show website, at greatbritishlrshow.com.

And the Best Used SUV is... T
Words: Graham Scott he annual dinner for the Car Dealer Used Car Awards – that must be quite an event. You can imagine most of the people sitting round the tables wouldn’t have been able to resist flogging each other vehicles. Wads of cash under the table, V5s in the post, nice one. But actually, when they paid attention they put their hands together for the winner of the ‘Best Used SUV’. What was it now, a Toyota or something? Oh no, that’s right, it was the Land Rover Discovery 4. The bit of mantelpiece kept for the Discovery 4 must be a bit crowded now – this joins 85 awards the SUV has already picked up. This trophy though was the result of a load of number crunching. And the numbers showed that the Discovery led by a margin for keeping
the highest percentage of value from new. It also spent less time sat on the forecourts of retailers and those used car specialists. The judges said: ‘Few things are better than riding around in comfort and luxury in a car that can go just about anywhere, and our best SUV manages both of these things in fine style. It has been incredibly popular amongst both dealers and the public since it was first launched in 1989 as a result.’ The all-new Discovery is aiming to carry on that tradition, helped by having two-year, or 21,000-mile service intervals. Industry figures reckon after three years it will retain 59% of its value, helping to lower the total cost of ownership. Now, tell me more about that absolutely mint Series I that you swear has been in a heated garage for the last two decades.

J
Words: Graham Scott
aguar Land Rover has just had a seriously successful time at the recent Los Angeles Auto Show. There were two main elements, both linked, even though at first that might not seem obvious. The first was the launch of Jaguar’s new I-PACE concept, a supercar with SUV internal space, powered by electricity. The second was the launch of the all-new Discovery in North America. What’s the connection, apart from JLR? Both events showcased the way the company is moving, in its words, from ‘cogs to code’. It’s
moving towards a cleaner future with ultra-clean combustion engines and more electric options. By 2020 the company will be able to offer the choice of electrification in about half of all its vehicles. We’re going to have to learn some new acronyms people. Now, all these will be on the JLR options board soon, so do you know what they stand for: BEV, MHEV and PHEV. You may confer. The answers are below. • • •

Can I have a word...
N
ow, you would never here me say that any of the Land Rovers we feature are mediorce – that would be just plain stupid. And proposterous, really, because I, like you, know that even the most standard-looking of Landies can have a history so colourful it would make a Macaw look grey. However, I look at the line-up of Land Rovers we’ve got between the sheets this month and I can’t help but utter out a few words of amazement, and the occasional jealous remark towards their respective owners. I mean look up-top where you can see a fantastic Discovery 1 owned by Kevin Jukes (Page 28) which is a classic case of how to build a properly sorted off-roader. That brings me on to some off-roading royalty, as we take a look at a Defender 90 SV (Page 24), ran for years as a winch challenge competitor under the wing of Jim Marsden, only now it’s returned (almost) to its original and less gnarley self. We’ve got an ex-army Landy enthusiast who has recently finished his first major resto in the shape of a beautiful Series III – with a history of a feline nature... (Page 20) Plus, I’ve been driving the Range Rover Sport SVR (tough, but someone’s gotta do it...) to see what all this new jazz is coming from the Special Vehicle Operations branch. See what I make of it over on Page 34. As I write this I’m dreaming of... well, I was going to say mince pies, but I’m already sick of them. Room for some more turkey, though, I reckon... By the time you read this I suspect you shall have had your Christmas dinner, played with your new toys (no, I’m not addressing the kids here) and most likely made and failed at your New Year’s resolution already. But whatever the case, I wish you the very best for 2017. Mike Trott, Editor michael.trott@ assignment-media.co.uk

CH Special Vehicles opened its new showroom near Silverstone at a public event in late October – showcasing the equipment it offers alongside its latest builds and a preview of projects to come from its workshops. The company, which specialises in full vehicle builds and air-suspension conversions as well as the supply and fit of top-end off-road and expedition equipment, conceived the showroom
as a new kind of premises for a UK offroad outfit. The idea is to provide somewhere clean and bright, comfortable and relaxing where customers can take their ease while planning a purchase. As well as an impressive display of products and marketing material from the world’s leading off-road and expedition equipment suppliers, the showroom features a variety of video screens showcasing its various products. ACH says it hopes these will give
customers ideas for the way they spec their own vehicles. Among the equipment on display are items from ARB, Warn, Rival, Old Man Emu and Frontrunner. There are sections dedicated to winch bumpers, lighting, battery and charging systems, as well as various other smaller items. But of course, it’s always about the vehicles. On top of the workshop ramp on the open day was a Land Rover Defender 110 running one of the company’s air suspension conversions, but if you like your heritage vehicles, there was a Series III which had recently been dragged out of a hedge and was set to go into the workshop for a full restoration as soon as the big event was over. A late Defender 90 built as a faithful replica of the last model off the line at Solihull in January 2016 also grabbed some of the spotlight. This had been loaned by a customer – and others showed up in everything from a Twisted 90 and a 110 overland truck with Kahn body panels (yes, really) to the simplest of Series Landies. If all that illustrates one thing, it’s the breadth of projects ACH is willing to take on. The company says customer service is at the core of its approach, and that it’s always ready to sit down with prospective clients to help them plan the spec of their build. The open weekend was just the beginning – and a visit to www.achsv.co.uk could be too.

f you’re a Land Rover owner with a keen sense of adventure and someone who likes to keep their Landy off tarmac as much as possible, then it’s wise to deck out your off-roader with more than just some decent rubber. Protection should be high on your priority list, but this can come in all manner of items, from your diff guards to your tree sliders. But chequer plating is a quick way of ensuring your bodywork isn’t being probed by some stubborn bush. And if you’re after chequer plating, there is only one place to visit: M12
Off-Road. They, quite literally, will have you covered. Take this selection, for example. Here you have a set of 2mm-thick steel plates, beautifully crafted for the wings of your Defender. They’ve even powder-coated them in black for a fancy look, while still being all the durability you need to protect your Land Rover. There are numerous different sets available, whether you want standard cover for your wings or whether you’d like to go the whole hog and look like you’ve driven the vehicle through a chequer plate manufacturing plant. The choice really is yours.
It goes to show, however, that some of the simplest of products can often be some of the most necessary. And seeing as you’ll find it necessary to see what else this M12 outfit can provide you with, we thought we’d leave you their website details here: www. m12-offroad.co.uk

We like those Masai people – as opposed to the Maasai people, whom we are a bit nervous of. People shouldn’t be that tall and slim. Apart from Victoria’s Secret models, obviously. Anyway, the people at Masai make their own front winch bumpers for Land Rovers, and jolly robust they are too. The materials they use are zinc-coated steel for the main construction. This is then powder-coated with black paint, but you can paint it to match your own vehicle if you choose. And doesn’t a colour-coded bumper look smart. It’s delivered in three parts, and we can’t see any of our readers really struggling with that particular jigsaw. The bumpers will fit most winches, and will fit onto Land Rover Defender 90 and 110 models. The price is £330 and that includes VAT. So if you’re liable to bump into anything, you’d best fit one of these first. Find them at www.masai4x4.com.

Want to stand out from the crowd? Over at 4X4 Wheel Covers they have a wide range of standard cover designs, as well as your traditional plain unprinted covers available too. These covers, made on-site in Lancashire from recycled plastic, are also personalisable if you have a specific design in mind you want to bring to life. All you need to do is supply their graphics department with your favourite picture of Fido and they will take the image and prepare it ready for printing onto your very own custom wheel cover. A personalised ‘Our Heritage’ wheel cover is an option for the die-hard fans out there, while if you are more interested in an alternative to the standard hard plastic covers, then 4X4 Wheel Covers still have you ‘covered’ so to speak. They also produce 3D moulded covers, which as the name suggests are three-dimensional designs that provide a classic look. Some of the existing 3D designs include the ‘Horses Head’ (for those who indulge in vendettas), a ‘Leaping Salmon’ (for the fisherman in you), ‘Spaniel Dog’ (for your best friend) or the ‘Pheasant’ (as a tribute to what you enjoy shooting). Every Landy driver can find their cover, so why wouldn’t you want to make the rear of your vehicle a more sentimental place. There can be a certain amount of leaning to left or right which doesn’t give much peace of mind if you’re intending to get under there. Sealey has a surprisingly simple solution for this. Their cross-beam adaptor can handle three tonnes, so could just about cope with you sitting in your
Landy on the jack, so long as you haven’t had seconds of Christmas dinner. All you have to do is take your trolley jack and take out the jack saddle. You then just put in the cross-beam adaptor and then put the saddle into the hole in the adaptor and you’re good to go. All you have to do is then raise the adjustable saddle so it meets the axle casing fairly square on. Now, when you lift, you are lifting

in two places, under the diff and under the axle casing. Result? A straight lift any power-lifter would be proud of. If all that sounds like you need to see how it’s done, then go you’ll need to go here: www.sealey.co.uk and type X137 into the search bar. When you’re on the page you’ll see a blue video tab – have a look and see just how simple this malarkey it is.
Liquid Lifetime Most liquids in our house, like those in bottles and cans, seem to have a very short lifespan. Particularly at weekends and in the evenings. Or when the day of the week ends in a ‘y’ or something. But Ravenol has come up with a much longer-lasting solution for your Land Rover. The clue is in the name: Ravenol ATF T-WS Lifetime Fluid. This is based on the latest synthetic technology and should represent a transmission oil which is twice as
durable as a standard ATF oil. Lifetime Fluid sounds like the sort of thing the Ancient Egyptians would have used for embalming, but actually it’s been developed for the latest sequential automatic transmissions. Given the complexity of transmissions in the latest Land Rovers and Range Rovers, a fluid that offers protection for longer just has to be a sensible investment. You’ll find it through Britpart at www.britpart.com. Cheers!
Tough is a word you often hear used about Landies. And sometimes their owners. And their partners, pets and anything else. And there’s no doubt that a lot of Land Rovers lead a
pretty tough life, out in all weathers, banged about on rocks and tree stumps, caked in mud for weeks and generally being eligible for entry into a shelter for battered vehicles. Raptor protective coating certainly has a protective role to play in keeping your Land Rover looking smart year after year. It’s a very adaptable coating, which you can apply with pretty much anything, to anything. The neat thing about it, or one of them, is that it comes in a black finish, but you can also get a tintable finish, so if you just add a bit of automotive paint of your choice, you

can have a custom colour to blend in with your vehicle better. It’s all the things you’d hope for – resistant to everything, like water, salt and UV – and also helps protect against rust, salt corrosion and all the other horrors. So it’s perfect for everything from wheelarches to underbody, sidesills to wheels and loading areas. And you can apply it with a gun, roller or brush, so you can have a smooth or rough a finish as you like. You’ll find it at Britpart – www. britpart.com. And if you haven’t got some on your Landy this winter – well, tough.

Elite Lights What kind of chap wouldn’t be drawn to a product that is called the Triple-R Elite 2? It’s a range of high-intensity LED road lights from Lazer Lamps but it sounds like something US Special Forces would use. ‘Okay colonel, the SEALs are calling in some Triple-R Elite 2s. We have a go.’ The line-up of lights replaces the old Elite series, and it now slots in just under the Competition lamps. So they’re road legal, but at the very top end of the range. Peak intensity – we love these phrases – is up 30% and who wouldn’t want that? There’s some clever stuff too, like the E-Boost technology in the Triple-R Elite 1000. This means
17
that you can have absolute peak light output, enough to totally blind other road users. You can use this for when you’re off-road, or on private roads or in competition. Then, when it’s time to rejoin the road, you just take off the E-Boost cap and the light adjusts down to 40%. Remarkably, that still makes it one of the most powerful lights you’ll get on the road, but it’s fully road legal, with a light spread that reduces immediate glare and gives a broad wash of light. You’re going to feel pretty confident with these leading the way, a confidence enhanced by knowing you have unbreakable polycarbonate lenses and a five-year warranty. Let’s roll.

Seal of Approval Atkinson Bespoke Engineering. They make a lot of bespoke stuff. You’d never have guessed, right? Well, today we’re bringing you their rear quarter seals that are designed for and compatible with Range Rover Classics and LSEs, dating between 1988 and 1995. The reason why you want to buy these seals over others on the market is because they are made from an altogether thicker ultraviolet rubber. Atkinson say that the lip on the bottom of the seal is slightly bigger and provides a better fit than the original part. So it should keep your Range Rover more watertight than before, especially as these seals give better

coverage and you end up with more rubber over the wings. This is important because over time rubber seals will shrink. Which means starting with a bigger lip to begin with ensures greater durability.
These are just one of the many products on offer by Atkinson Bespoke Engineering, so do check out their website for more clever products like this one: www. atkinsonbespokeengineering.com

Who would like to see the manufacturer’s own parts books, workshop manuals and handbooks? Just as we thought, every hand raised. Land Rover’s original technical publications can now be yours. What’s even better, you don’t have to have a library the size of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. You can have it all on a range of USB sticks. You could keep the stick in your pocket or the glove box, ready to look up the solution to whatever ailment has just struck your Landy. Or you could just lose it and then not be able to find it when needed. Or you could keep them at home, plugged in to your computer – so long as it’s a PC, as Land Rover seems to assume that Landy types don’t use Macs. Perhaps they are for frivolous hipsters after all. Anyway, you can not only have all that knowledge at your fingertips, but also download classic Land Rover or Range Rover wallpapers to your desktop, rootle through image libraries and rummage around in the media archive. The files are zoomable, searchable, everything-able. The USB sticks are separated into categories, so there’s one for the Discovery 1, another for the Defenders, another for the Range Rover Sport and so on. To find out more and to gain all that knowledge and those fascinating facts, head over to the Britpart website at www. britpart.com.

Life After Longleat
Words: Matt Abbott Pictures: Mike Trott
Many Series Landies you come across are accompanied by a rather interesting back-story, with the most common tales being of ex-military or ex-agricultural escapades. However, there are very few that can rival the history of this Series III – which is accustomed to some very ferocious four-legged felines…
I
’m sure several of you reading will be aware of the BBC television series Animal Park, which saw a fresh-faced Ben Fogle and Kate Humble gallivanting around Longleat Safari Park throughout much of the previous decade. While reference to this may conjure memories of the vast array of species at the park for you, or even simply the grand scale of the 9,000-acre estate, for me it’s the frequent visits to the eponymous Tiger Territory that really linger in the mind. The real attraction for me was seeing the felines at feeding time when
the keepers stood precariously atop a vehicle hurling hunks of meat off the back, whilst trying not to resemble a tasty treat for Felix themselves. Little did I know the significance of these orange and black-striped motors at the time. These were, as you may expect, Land Rovers. I mean, what else could stand up to the task of delivering dinner to a load of visceral moggies? Which begs the question – where exactly do these Land Rovers go once their time in captivity is up? Well, courtesy of Harry Kissock we have managed to track one down out in the
wild, or rural Chelmsford as it is more commonly known. After sitting down with former soldier Harry, we were able to piece together the undoubtedly unique history of this fine vehicle, and like so many of these modern tales, it all began on the Internet. ‘I purchased it through eBay in late December 2014, and it was in fairly good shape when I picked it up,’ he explains. As for the specifics of its 150-mile migration towards Essex, Harry says: ‘As far as I am told it was used to feed the big cats at Longleat Safari Park, then once it left the park an old lady
Above: Orange flecks denote previous close encounters of a furry kind... who lived on a farm used it to carry logs around.’ While any official documents no longer exist thanks to the mislaying by a previous owner, the Landy itself managed to retain fragments of evidence towards its history. ‘I could tell after stripping it apart that it had very limited wear on most of the working parts, and you could even see sections of the tiger print vinyl on the bodywork.’ Later on, Harry admitted to having taken quite a shine to the original bodywork from day one. ‘The tiger print was what attracted me to this particular vehicle in the first place. I was ever
so tempted to re-cover it with a new vinyl tiger print, but in hindsight, I’m glad I didn’t!’ However, deciding on whether to vinyl wrap or not was the least of his concerns at the back-end of 2014. The positive assessment upon picking it up was entirely relative, as it was bought, like so many old-school Landies are, as a rebuilding project. As he delved further, Harry found two areas which were in need of instant attention. ‘There was one outrigger that had to be replaced because of rust, and it was the same story for the bulkhead; it had rust in all of the usual areas for a vehicle of that age.’ From an initial impression, that’s not too bad considering the car itself is going on 40 years old. In fact, it’s from the same year Concorde entered service and the very first Rocky film premiered; that, of course, being 1976. So as you can probably imagine, there was some substantial work to be done under the hood, but Harry wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. ‘The rebuild took me 17 months, which saw me spend almost every evening and weekend working on it. This was largely thanks to certain

inevitable factors slowing me down: sourcing parts, fault-finding and especially complaints from the wife saying I’m not spending enough time with her!’ Some would say she was justified, but even Harry’s wife can’t deny that the finished project is something to truly admire. Regardless of hiccups along the way, Harry says it was a largely positive first foray into this encapsulating world. ‘I have to say, this is the first time I have ever really restored anything to that scale, and I loved
every minute of it!’ And his wife will be pleased to hear that he hasn’t been discouraged from a second exploit. ‘Once my cash flow is ready again I will be purchasing my next project, the “wolf in sheep’s clothing”.’ Harry remained tight-lipped on the details of this upcoming project; however, he did go on to divulge his background with Landies: ‘I’ve always loved Land Rovers, I grew up with my dad constantly having one on the go, whether that be a Series II or even an early 300TDI Defender. He’s still at it to this day with his current work-
horse, a commercial Discovery 3 with 260,000 miles on the clock.’ He also firmly believes that these experiences have subconsciously informed his motoring footprint: ‘I guess when you grow up having a no-nonsense motor in the family it makes an imprint on your vehicle choices in the future.’ To go along with this train of thought, Harry thinks that his professional experiences will certainly have helped in this regard too: ‘My time spent in the army, and in particular being light infantry meant that the
21
most common form of transport was the Land Rover.’ There’s clearly some deep-routed affection for these machines, and in particular the classic Land Rovers, which Harry believes to be understated in their ability to still turn heads today. As we all know, though, there’s far more to loving Land Rovers than just the mere aesthetics: ‘Last Friday morning before we met, I was driving around in the Series III and there must’ve been ten other Land Rover drivers wave to me all in their differContinued overleaf

ent models. You don’t get that in any other vehicle.’ As Harry and I discussed the idiosyncrasies of being a Land Rover owner, the conversation turned towards the masses of work he has put into the car over the best part of two years. The previously mentioned bulkhead was swapped for a new galvanised one as, in Harry’s own words, ‘it was better to replace the whole bulkhead rather than patch-welding multiple different parts of it.’ On top of that, the chassis was shotblasted and painted with Plascoat PPA571, which he’s reliably informed, is the same paint that’s used on underwater pipelines. In terms of the engine, the hoses, belts and leads have all been replaced, as well as a new Weber carburettor coming in for the original Lucas one. Furthermore, the engine has been serviced and tuned, with the fluids being flushed and replaced along with a refurbed radiator. On the exterior, new doors complete with windows are in, along with brand new lights throughout the interior of the vehicle. Aesthetics-wise, Exmoor Trim canvases and seats are in as well as Harry’s beloved change - the newly done paintwork. ‘CL Panelcraft did a fantastic job with the paintwork, it’s my favourite aspect of the Series III and I love how different the car can look in certain types of light.’ Harry’s Series III has very much established itself as his secondary pride and joy (after his wife). It was even present on his big day. ‘Since completing the rebuild I even used it as my wedding car!’ So from feline chowder to fancy carriage, this is one Land Rover that has been lucky enough to escape the enclosure that can be rust and neglect. In Harry it found a new gamekeeper and one who put this old Landy back on the straight and narrow. Harry’s vehicle is currently for sale, and he is avaliable on hkissock@hotmail.co.uk or on 07884 008691.

The 90 SV is a special truck, but this particular example is even more worthy of the label, having racked up countless accolades in the UK winch challenge scene. Many disapproved of the truck’s transformation into a loud and lairy competition motor – but it’s okay, because its owner was always going to welcome back the SV of old. Well, almost…

J
im Marsden has the rare distinction of having received hate mail for his activities aboard a Land Rover. No, not from environmentalists – from Land Rover fans. Successful or not, though, it was a 90 SV. One of only 90 ever made. And not only was the SV rare, it was also meaningful. Land Rover had long been making County versions of the Defender, but a full-on leisure vehicle had never been on the cards until this eye-catching soft-top came along. With alloy wheels and metallic paint, by the standards of its time the SV was a stunner.
It was still a good, basic Defender underneath, however. Between 2001 and 2007, Jim scored top three finishes in every major UK winch event, winning many of them outright. During those six years of competing, this Solihull rarity was dragged over more rocks and tree stumps than a hundred ordinary Defenders will see in their lifetime. The 90 was also used as the test bed for a wide range of products made by Jim’s company, Gigglepin 4x4, including its heavy-duty suspension arms and upgrades for the Warn 8274. But with an eye to competing abroad,
in 2007 he built a new 90 and for half a decade the SV sat untouched by the sun’s rays. That half-decade saw Jim become one of Britain’s most successful motorsport exports. But he never forgot his 90 SV. ‘I always wanted to rebuild it,’ he says. ‘It’s a special car and it’s got a lot of memories for a lot of people.’ Around the start of 2012, he finally made the time. ‘I talked to my workshop guys and we decided we could rebuild the SV in a nine-week window, if we got on with it.’ Jim might have hammered the 90 in its comping days, but this was to be a proper, top notch rebuild. ‘I’ve tried to be as sympathetic as possible,’ he says. ‘I didn’t want to just replace everything. If you try to refurbish the parts nicely, they’re right for the vehicle, and we’ve tried to do that as much as we can.’ A case in point was the bulkhead. ‘We sent it for shotblasting, and when we got it back we could have cried. It would have been easier to order a new one – but I didn’t want to bin it. There were little things on it that to me, make it my bulkhead.

Above: These Lazer LED lights are way smaller than what was previously positioned here, so the bar mounting them is similarly trim. ‘The technology is just mind-blowing,’ says Jim. ‘Good lights, you just can’t get enough of’ ‘So I welded it up and sorted it out. A lot of it’s new – maybe it’s a bit like Trigger’s broom. But it’s back up and running. And it is the right bulkhead!’ The same went for the axles, which needed ‘some serious love’ to remain original. Perhaps the biggest job, though, was the rear tub. ‘The filler neck area was destroyed, and so was the whole of the back. Land Rover rear tubs are put together with
spot welds, so I had to find a way of rebuilding it that wouldn’t mean using pop rivets. ‘Luckily, we found a body panel glue that’s absolutely fantastic. So I spent a long time with hammer and dolly, straightening panels, heat-shrinking, steam cleaning and setting it all up so it would fit with the other panels. It Continued overleaf

Above: Jim firmly believes that if you look after your truck, specifically by keeping it clean, it’ll look after you. Even so, he didn’t think the axles would be salvageable, describing them as ‘really second-hand, inside and out.’ It took ‘some serious love,’ but he’s proved himself wrong and there they are, albeit minus the original pegged ARB diffs which he sold in ‘a moment of madness’ was very hard work. But I managed to save the cappings on one side – though the other one, well, most of it was missing.’ What a result, then, that several years previously he had bought a capping from his local Land Rover dealer. ‘You can’t get them any more. But I’d bought a genuine SV capping and it had been sitting on the shelves for years.’ And the good news didn’t just stop there either. ‘I never competed in it with a full canvas on, but even so the original hood was destroyed. So way back, years
ago, I phoned up my local main dealer and asked if they still had one. ‘He said, “you’re not going to believe this, we’ve got one on the shelf. We ordered it for a customer years ago and they never collected it. We’ve looked at Land Rover Parts and they haven’t got one either.” I couldn’t not have it! Last SV hood in the world! ‘So when we were doing the rebuild, I was very cocky. But we got the canvas out of the bag one day, laid it out on the floor - and saw that the mice had wanted it even more. There was a hole, more than a foot square, that had been gnawed in the front edge. I could have cried.’ Clearly this was a project that nearly brought Jim to tears on numerous occasions! At least this meant he had a
template, though. So off the hood went to All Wheel Trim. ‘Now, the original SV hoods had poppers on them which were forever coming undone, and a pain to fit, and there are better systems on the market now. But I wanted it to look right – I don’t like it when they don’t have the right catches and stuff. So against their advice at All Wheel Trim, we fitted poppers on it. And all credit to them – the hood they created, it’s that good that they fit bang on.’ Elsewhere, it was a case of moving through the vehicle and rebuilding everything that needed it. And everything needed it. ‘You wouldn’t believe how many parts those seat boxes are made from!’ says Jim, having rebuilt them piece by piece. ‘I
Left: You’re looking at a spring here, obviously, but it’s the shock behind it that’s really interesting. ‘In late 2004,’ says Jim, ‘I switched over to the Gwyn Lewis +4” suspension using the N73L Land Cruiser (yes, that filthy imposter) shock absorbers, which basically have 11” of travel. And we were blown away by them, absolutely stoked’ Below: Jim ordered a galvanised chassis from Richards some years ago with a view to rebuilding the 90. It was built to SV spec, complete with holes for the roll cage mounts, and modified with a flush-fitting gearbox crossmember, mounts for Gigglepin’s own rear radius arms, stronger steering box mounts and the recovery loops you see here welded to the rear crossmember. When it came to the rebuild, the original proved to be in better nick than anyone expected – saving it would have added to the truck’s originality, but would also have added three weeks to the job, and with the Richards unit waiting patiently it simply made sense to use it

The intercooler pipes went away to be passivated, and details like the bonnet catches and wing mounts were brought back from the dead. The wiring harness was unpicked and reloomed, using conduit to keep it tidy and ready to last another lifetime, and even some of the brake lines were able to go again. How can this possibly be the case on a truck that’s had such a hard life? Pay attention: ‘I was always quite religious in getting it clean. If you keep your car clean, your car will love you. It’s that simple. ‘So things we were expecting to be rotten and destroyed, we were finding they were actually in pretty good order. Bolts came out when you wanted them to.’ Here comes some more good advice, too: ‘The timing belt, it’s meant to be changed at 60,000 miles. I did it every six to eight months, religiously. Water gets in, it goes for the idler
bearings and it’s just not worth taking the chance. Anyone using one in anger every weekend, change that belt as often as you can.’ And guess what? The 90 is still running on its original engine and gearbox. That’s at twenty-plus years, six of them in winch comps. Get the point? So, would the purists who sent Jim hate mail be more approving of the way his 90’s been restored? At the very least, you’d hope they’d accept that he understands the value of its parts originality. And he’d definitely used it the way Land Rover intended – and will be again. ‘I love it,’ he says. ‘Grin factor 10. It was the family car when I first bought it. My partner and I, we took it everywhere. We travelled all over Europe in it. ‘People say it should be back to concours. To me, every Land Rover leaves the showroom and only then takes on its personality. And that 90, as it stands now, in my eyes that’s how the SV should have left the showroom. Bigger tyres, a little suspension lift, decent winch, good lights. That, to me, is how it should be, that’s my interpretation of the SV. That’s my special vehicle.’

t’s not abnormal to get into a hobby because your dad’s into it, and many lifelong off-roaders will tell you they were introduced to the game by going out to play with their old man when they were kids. Kevin Jukes is a perfect example – though in his case, it didn’t happen until he was all grown up and already a father himself. It was over ten years ago that he started taking a fancy to his dad’s Land Rover. The fact that this was a Series IIA on 33-inch tyres says much about its intent, and it wasn’t long before Kevin decided he was going to get one for himself. That’s one of the benefits of picking up a hobby from your dad when you’re already an adult. When the bug bites, you don’t need to wait ten years before you can do something about it. In Kevin’s case, what he did was go out and buy a 1995 Discovery 300Tdi Commercial. This was completely standard, which suited him fine as he intended to use it first and foremost as his work vehicle (he’s a self-employed builder). ‘I thought I’d do the odd playday in it,’ he says. ‘But I did more and more to it as time went on.’ His starting point was the Disco’s suspension, which he treated to a 2½-inch lift. This made room for a set of 33-inch tyres, and already he had himself a truck to reckon with. ‘But I got bored after a couple of months,’ he admits. ‘And then it went bigger, and I added and added for the next 18 months or so.’ What’s he added? Well, height, mainly. The Disco now stands between five and six inches taller than standard, thanks to a combination of suspension and body mods, and those 33-inch tyres have given way to a set of 37-inch Goodyears. By anyone’s standards, this is one big Disco. Big, and flexible, too. Kevin claims only once ever to have lifted a wheel, though as that was on top of a hill with no trees anywhere nearby to break his

fall if he rolled, it was ‘quite hairy.’ No wonder, with the vehicle’s centre of gravity hiked to the max and, as yet, no roll cage. ‘It gets a bit scary on side slopes. But I’ve never been over…’ He has no intention of pushing it to those sort of extremes, either. ‘I don’t want to trash it, I’ve got to use it. And I like my car, I’ve spent a lot of time on it so I don’t want to trash it.’ All the same, his ideas for the future know no bounds. ‘I’ve been itching to put some Unimog axles on it,’ he says, ‘and 44-inch tyres.’ Whether he’d go so far with this particular Disco, which is his first ever 4x4, is another matter, but if he were to buy another off-roader it would be the same again. ‘Land Rovers are simple enough. If something goes wrong, they’re pretty easy to fix, and they’re easy to tinker away with. And I like Discoverys – if I were going to change it I’d get another Discovery for my next project. It’s more comfortable than a 90, and you can get more in the back as well.’ It does of course help when you used to work as a mechanic, and it’s this background that has allowed Kevin to do such a thorough and well-presented job on the vehicle. It also means that his future plans hold no fear: when we talked to Kevin, fitting improved seats, an adjustable panhard rod to cope with the effects of the lift, a custom

Above: The suspension. It’s pretty beastly, and as men, we appreciate beastly data – so let’s hit you with some: +2.5” springs, +2” spring spacers, +2” DeCarbon shocks, tubular front shock turrets, QT 6-degree castor-corrected lightweight radius arms, cranked QTs at the rear and Polybushed all-round rear bumper capable of taking the huge spare tyre and, yes, an internal roll cage, they were all on the to-do list. The latter is a particularly sound idea for every reason imaginable, what with this being a Disco that seems to get higher and higher every time you look at it. There’s also the small matter of Kevin carrying more than just his builder’s tools in the back. The Disco Commercial was of course built as a two-seater, but in a superbly put-together rear Kevin’s now sports a third seat. And given that this is there to carry his daughter, it’s clear that a roll cage is a very good idea. Not just because it’s only right to protect your next of kin, either. Kevin reports that his daughter loves off-roading, and that can only mean one thing. Watch this space for the future and there may be another descendent of the Jukes putting together another fantastic Landy. Below: Naturally, all boys, like their fathers, and their fathers before them, love a bit of power in the motor. erformance and excellence comes in many different shapes. In the same way that I can perform remarkably when devouring the office supply of mince pies, my performance at the gym in trying to alleviate the effect of said pies is rather less remarkable. Closer to laughable, some would say. Unlike me on a treadmill, Defenders, as we know, are extremely remarkable machines. As 4x4s go, they are virtually unrivalled across adverse terrain and have become one of Britain’s most iconic and celebrated pieces of engineering. And rightly so. They have been the workhorses that have
There’s a faction within Jaguar Land Rover’s empire, a circle of engineers who have been let off the leash and given licence to express the limits of the company’s technical know-how. Their vehicles are masterful, their operations meticulous – welcome to the SVO division enabled farmers, utility companies, rescue teams and many more, to carry out their jobs and duties for many decades (if you include the Defender’s Series predecessors too). But while a Defender can rule the roost at, say, a playday in Silverdale, at Silverstone it can be made out to look like a real cock. Of course, I’m being unfair. It was never designed to devastate racetracks; clipping apexes and repelling the urge to break into oversteer as you open up the throttle. That isn’t what Land Rover is about. Or is it? Just over two years ago, Jaguar Land Rover unveiled its first major
offering from within the skunkworks that is the Special Vehicle Operations division. The team is tasked with the objective of designing and building JLR’s most powerful, most luxurious and most desirable vehicles to ever grace the Earth. That first offering came in the form of the Range Rover Sport SVR, which at the time became the world’s fastest production SUV after romping around the Nurburgring in about the same time it takes for your kids to get bored of their new Christmas presents: 8 minutes 14 seconds, to be exact. We don’t often mention the other twin that makes up the two-pronged giant
that is Jaguar Land Rover, but in this instance it’s pertinent. The SVR’s engine – a raunchy 5.0-litre supercharged V8 – is the same powerplant that appears in the new Jaguar F-Type SVR, only in the Range Rover the power output sticks to the more modest 550hp – yes, you read correctly. It’s a figure that is now dominating your mind, and when you drive the Rangey SVR that obsession over the engine, with its power, noise and pure performance, never stops. It dictates the whole driving experience. But what an experience! You have to appreciate that this is a different sort of Land Rover; another way in which to get your kicks in an SUV. Maybe that’s it: where the Defender is the classic 4x4, maybe the SVR is the epitome of the phrase ‘SUV’. Feel free to shoot me – I’ve been wrong before. Nevertheless, while the Defender gets its kicks from making sure you get to your destination whatever the terrain, the SVR focuses on getting you there as quickly as the laws of physics will allow. Don’t be fooled, the SVR could go off-road and tackle ruts and boulders in much the same way that HRH the Duchess of Cambridge could manage a spot of pole dancing. I’ve no doubt
that either would make for particularly riveting viewing too – but that doesn’t necessarily mean they would be in their respective comfort zones. Throw Kate an evening banquet, though, and the Duchess will blend in and take to the occasion like a royal to caviar. The same applies to the SVR – minus the caviar. Show the SVR a sweeping A-road or an inviting (and wide) B-road, and this two-tonne missile rockets down tarmac like nothing you’ve conceived even in your most mind-boggling of dreams. And we’re not talking about the Duchess here. Combine the forces that are pressing you into those beautiful SVR-embossed sports seats with the soundtrack of a thunderous race car playing around behind you and you quickly realise that the SVO division should stop making cars and simply focus on making music. They should serenade us with their other-worldly harmonics and oust the likes of Skinny Mix, Justin Bell-End or whoever from the top of the charts. The SVR even has a button for ‘Loud Mode’. Switch the SVR into Dynamic mode and turn off the electronic nannies keeping your rear tyres planted, and this car really can shake its ‘booty’ like something witnessed in a Skinny Mix video. While other road users will definitely think you’re a pillock,

LAND ROVER DEFENDER INTERIOR SPECIALISTS
DO YOU WANT YOUR DEFENDER TO STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD?
SVR: Seriously Viscerally Rapid... you’ll be the one with the grin – and no licence. Exit the corner and lean hard on the throttle, listen to the supercharger sing and feel the rears start to break traction. The active exhaust blares ungodly tones and you feed in a smidgeon of opposite lock and before you know it you’re at the helm of a rapturous £100K vessel travelling sideways down the road at light speed. Exhilarating is an understatement. This is one of the most complete vehicles I’ve ever driven. What else – if anything at all – could you ask of such a machine? I say machine, but this would be too inhumane. You know how when driving a Defender you feel connected, like you’re an extension of the mechanical components working around you? Well, the SVR manages to pull off the same trick, only it achieves this in a more modern and 21st Century way. The SVO division doesn’t just build the firm’s most luxurious vehicles, like the SV Autobiography Range Rover
for example, but it actively goes out to fashion the company’s most engaging vehicles too.
‘THE SVR COULD GO OFF-ROAD, IN MUCH THE SAME WAY THAT HRH THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE COULD MANAGE A SPOT OF POLE DANCING’ At £102,635 as tested, it’s a creation that few will ever get to own. It’s a fact that made it all the harder to give back the keys to Land Rover. I briefly
considered emigrating with the SVR as my accomplice, but I probably wouldn’t have got to the ferry without filling up six times anyway. Yes, these vehicles are dream cars, attainable only in such fantasies, but Jaguar Land Rover are increasing this division, both in terms of its product and the size of the workforce for this sector. A few months ago it announced a £20m investment into its technical centre and a further recruitment of 250 personnel. Not everything they will build will be the other side of £100K, and we should celebrate that our beloved Land Rover is involved in creating such masterpieces. Whether you agree this is the type of vehicle Land Rover should put their name to or not, it’s going to happen regardless. Land Rover was a pioneer in engineering when it launched the Series I all those years ago, and it is still pushing automotive boundaries further than before. It’s just that the end result is of a very different guise.

Knowledge is King It’s a dangerous world out there for overlanders – and that’s before you encounter corrupt law enforcement and animals that want to munch your limbs for breakfast. This is why a bit of 4x4 training can at least ensure you’re never a sitting duck… or Land Rover. Serial Africa overlanders Noel and Marilu Peries explain why training is so vital

hen preparing for an overland journey, buying the right vehicle is only half the job. To survive a great traverse between several countries in Africa, knowing how to drive a 4x4 vehicle may be just as important. We are definitely not 4x4 experts. I remember buying our ‘91 Land Rover Defender (named Maggie) in 2009 and spending a good half a day running through a huge checklist with the previous owners. High on my list was practicing off-roading, using the differential lock, and low-range gears. At the time all of this was a blur. And, if I am honest, I was not completely confident on what to do when driving Maggie off-road. When I did my first overland journey from London to South Africa in 2010, I learnt how to drive Maggie off-road by experimenting. I learnt how to deal with recovery situations the hard way - by making mistakes and learning from them. But if I could do it all over again, I definitely would have enrolled in a 4x4 training course to be sure I had the skills to make it there and back safely.
Why do a 4x4 training course?

stubosmith@me.com
www.overlandadventureproducts.co.uk
There are many 4x4 skills needed when overlanding in a continent like Africa, where road conditions can be
really difficult. Some skills, like recovery, might only be needed a handful of times - or not at all if you’re lucky! But to be confident in the ability to avoid or recover from difficult situations, with minimal risk of injury or damage to the vehicle, the right level of training is important. Luckily for us, on our current overland journey through southern and eastern Africa, we found a course at the 4x4 Training Academy in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. For R1200 (approx. £65) per person, we participated in a day-long basic 4x4 training course. Needless to say, you don’t have to reach the bottom of Africa before finding a company that offers suitable training – take Yorkshire 4x4 Training, for example.
How to choose a 4x4 training course? There are many 4x4 training courses to choose from around the world, with many aimed at different skill levels, from basic to advanced. In our opinion, it is definitely advisable to find an operator with solid reviews and recommendations. However, finding the best course will depend on what you want to get out of the experience. For us, the most important aspect was whether the instructor could
teach us how to use our Land Rover Defender, not just any 4x4. What we liked about our experience with the 4x4 Training Academy was that our instructor, Brent, knew and understood Land Rovers, and focused on giving us practical skills to use in our own vehicle.
What do you learn during basic 4x4 training? If your training course is like ours, then you may be taken back to school and given a few introductory pointers through a screen. Let’s face it, the theory always comes before the practical element – and you’d be surprised how many people don’t understand the basics of 4x4 operation. Some of the topics covered included: vehicle selection – knowing the mechanics of your 4x4 vehicle; equipment selection – important kit to bring on an off-road journey; driving techniques for different terrains and we also looked at tyre health and the recovery side of 4x4s. After a couple of hours of classroom instruction, we were ready to do something practical and get our hands dirty. And boy oh boy, did we get dirty! Here we focus on just a few of the major lessons we learnt regarding our Land Rover.
4x4 Lesson #1: the high-lift jack At our request, the first thing our instructor taught us was how to safely use our high-lift jack to change a tyre. Until this moment, our high-lift jack was little more than decoration on our Land Rover, to improve our rugged image. We were too worried that without knowing how to use the jack properly, we might cause ourselves more harm than good. After a good dose of WD-40, our high-lift jack was working like magic and we learnt the proper way to use it. Here is our summary of lessons learnt: • Practice using the high-lift jack before a real-life recovery situation – this is a dangerous tool that can cause injury! • Make sure that the high-lift jack is well oiled and free from rust if not, use WD-40 for lubrication. • Locate and insert the high-lift jack into the jacking points, which should be welded firmly upon the vehicle’s chassis. • When jacking the high-lift up or down, avoid placing your head between the arm and the shaft - if the arm snaps back while jacking, it could cause injury.
Practical 4x4 Lesson #2 – how and when to deflate your tyres Our first team exercise was learning how to lower tyre pressure up to 50%. Why were we taught this? When driving on sandy tracks with poor traction, the lower the pressure in the tyres, the more the surface of the tyre makes contact with the ground, which improves traction. It makes a lot of sense once explained, and even more sense when you experience the difference between driving a sandy track with full tyre pressure, and again with lower pressure. Here’s a few tips to travel by: • Have a tyre pressure gauge handy to accurately check the tyre pressure. • Optionally, it is good to have a tyre compressor on hand to inflate tyres after returning to the paved road – otherwise, make sure to re-inflate tyres at the nearest petrol station/service centre. • Make sure you know what the best tyre pressure is for driving both on- and off-road. Yes, Jerry Can Pinning What is it about jerry cans? We all know they’re called that because the Germans came up with the design, and somehow it’s hard to get over that fact. Every time I see one I think of a sand-coloured can strapped on to a Panzer Mk IV or a half-track as part of Rommel’s Afrika Korps. Be honest, so do you, don’t you? Oh, it’s just me. So let’s have a big shout out to Vinzenz Grunvogel, for it was he who invented the jerry can back in 1937. Although of course he didn’t call it that. With customary German exactitude he called it the Wehrmacht-Einheitskanister. Anyway, am I digressing slightly? No I’m not, because I haven’t even started to get to the point yet, so technically I haven’t digressed. So here is the point. You can buy some seriously well-made jerry cans that Herr Grunvogel would have approved of. Which is handy as all fuel cans now must be approved, and if they’re over 10-litres they can’t be made of plastic if they’re carrying petrol. These colourful cans come in red, black, yellow or green although, sadly, not in Afrika Korps sand yellow.
They really do seem very well put together. For starters they’re made of 0.9mm steel, which is thicker than most, and they also have a powder-coated outside and a resin-covered lining. The lining can flex if the can gets dented, and the lining is of course impervious to petrol, as well as water, oil and, oooh, that’s a good idea, alcohol. A special spout means you can dump the contents of a 20-litre can into your Panzer, sorry, Land Rover, in 25sec, and you don’t even get any glugging thanks to the wide breather channel. Sounds like the Editor on Friday night. These cans are so robust they’ve actually got approval from the United Nations, so they’re to be taken seriously. You can get small 5-litre ones, or more medium 10-litre cans but obviously you want the original size, the 20-litre. That’s the most expensive but it costs a fraction over £20, which sounds like excellent value given the robust and well thought through construction. You can buy them through Expedition Equipment (www.expedition-equipment.com).

With this little beauty you’re getting a heck of a lot of capability, all in one small unit. The GPS Globe Evasion Double DIN Unit has a five-in-one format. Look what you get: Double DIN; a radio; all-terrain GPS; navigation GPS; Bluetooth; micro USB ports and micro SD façade. What more, really, could you want. All this comes with a 7in double DIN, and offers maps of 48 countries in Greater Europe. If you get lost with this baby you’ve probably been pressing all the wrong buttons. It costs £895 and comes through Yorkshire 4x4 Treks. You can find them easily enough at www.yorkshire4x4treks.co.uk.
39 Above: Another lesson that Noel and Marilu learnt was the importance of when to engage low range and diff-lock on their 110. Low box will always give you the most control at low speeds – low first is ideal over severe rocks, and of course for engine braking, while second or third will be best for maintaining momentum through mud or on the way up hills. It’s all about weighing up the scenario, assessing which gear is going to work best, while taking into account the surface condition, the gradient and how much momentum you’ll need to come out – or down – the other side
Practical 4x4 Lesson #3 – safe recovery Our final exercise of the day was to drive through mud to practise our recovery skills. As he instructed us on how to drive through a riverbed, Brent had a huge grin on his face, as he knew we were likely to get seriously stuck. Picture playdays when you egg your ‘bravest’ mate into tackling a particular gnarly section.
The first thing to do when getting stuck in an off-road situation is to remain calm. Then just follow these simple steps: • Have the right equipment. Luckily, we discovered during the course that we had the wrong recovery equipment. We did not have a kinetic rope or bow shackles, used for recovery rather than towing. • Designate one person as the leader. Why? There could be
IVES CASSTROM KN
many panicked voices in a difficult situation, and having just one person in control allows for clearer communication during a challenging task. • When being recovered by another vehicle, ensure that the stuck vehicle is engaged in gear to give momentum when the recovery vehicle begins to move forward. Training on how to use your Land Rover to the best of its abilities might
sound like a potentially laborious and needless task for some. But you can never overestimate the need for thorough preparation when you’re planning on exploring the wilderness with nothing else besides your truck to keep you alive. We thoroughly enjoyed our 4x4 training, and feel much more confident on our current overland journey through southern and eastern Africa. You can follow our adventures on www.maggieinafrica.com.

few months back (issue 33), we followed the story of Ruby The Landy and her owners, Jenny Bright and Gavin Lowrie, as the three of them travelled around Morocco, taking in the scenery and culture, but primarily earning their stripes to prepare them for an even grander conquest. The world is a pretty big place, but that is the target. And Ruby was so eager to get going on the next voyage that she actually set off before Jenny and Gavin! ‘We packed her with the help of Nene Overland and our lovely friend, Bob, who works there, on Friday 13th May 2016,’ says Jenny. ‘We drove Ruby down to Peterborough from Leeds (where we live) and ran out of fuel on the way, because we had been told to run the fuel right down to a thimble-full for packing her in the shipping container!’ Perhaps they took the advice a little too literally? Refreshed, Ruby was packed into her container and delivered to the Port of Tilbury in London. On Monday 16th May, Ruby was on her way to Cartagena, Columbia. ‘We followed a week later and flew on the 23rd from Manchester to New York and then New York to Cartagena
Above: Packed into the container and ready for the off, the epic adventure for this trio began back in May 2016 – and they’re still out there now... on the 25th May,’ recalls Gavin. ‘Ruby turned up 15 days after she left the UK on the 31st May 2016. We didn`t get her back straight away, though, so we eventually started our overlanding trip in the second week of June.’ Now obviously, travelling the world takes more than a long weekend, so Jenny and Gavin haven’t given themselves any time restraints on when to return home. They’re hoping to be ‘out there’ for around two years (funds permitting), but let’s face it, having
both resigned, neither of them have a job to rush back to and they’re renting out their house meaning it could be crowded if they make an early return! So whereabouts are they headed? ‘We will spend the first year going from Colombia to Ushuaia, the southernmost tip of Argentina. This has taken us through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay so far,’ explains Jenny. ‘Ruby will have a rest over Christmas whilst we go by boat to the Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica, and then we will drive through Patagonia alternating between Chile and Argentina.’ Sounds nice. And there’s more too for the lucky devils. For the second year of the tour, they aim to head east by shipping Ruby to Malaysia, and then want to drive through Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey and, finally, Europe. Rules, conflict and other obstacles can spring up at any time, however. So the route is never concrete. They remained suitably prepared, though, with both Jenny and Gavin embarking upon a mechanics course before setting off to account for any Ruby tantrums. Plus they’ve made a change to their living quarters by binning the Howling Moon tent of old
41 Above: All hands on deck as the final preparations are made to Ruby and switching to a Maggiolina. ‘We loved the Howling Moon but it still took 15 minutes to put up and down and involved Gav having to get on the roof in all weathers to put the cover on,’ admits Jenny. ‘We didn`t want to do this for two years so invested in the Maggiolina, which is a lot faster to use.’ We will be running monthly updates on Ruby and her companions as they explore new and exciting regions of the world, initially going over where they have left footprints todate, before ‘joining up’ with them as they continue their adventure across the globe. But before we let you go, we have a final word from Jenny on what they are most looking forward to… ‘It’s the freedom of being able to choose our own routes, stop when we want, wild camp in some of the most beautiful places on Earth and live a much simpler life without loads of stuff!’ she exclaims. ‘I am also looking forward to Antarctica as it will be my final continent and is one of the most beautiful. And meeting new people and trying new things is always part of the enjoyment.’ From us at The Landy, we wish them safe and happy travels. Below: A mechanics course has given Jen and Gav the added piece of mind for when Ruby isn’t playing ball

Supercharged Range Rovers can already move at brisk speeds, but what happens if you want a little more haste from your whining V8? Derby 4x4 knows exactly just what to feed your motor Words and Pictures: Mike Trott
f, like me, you’re a keen admirer of the work by Sir David Attenborough, then it won’t have bypassed you that recently there has been a bit of hype around the marvellous Planet Earth II programme. It’s an amazing production, capturing some of the most fascinating – and at times unusual – wildlife that exists around the globe. That’s all very well, but while Sir David has used Land Rovers previously, he’s not about to be our special guest in our workshop feature this month. We tried, but he was last seen at a tea party in the Serengeti with his companions Mr. Lion, Mrs. Giraffe and Sir Dung Beetle. Probably. Actually, while I mention big cats, did you see the Planet Earth II episode where the jaguar attacks a caiman in the jungle? No?! Oops – may have spoiled that bit for you then. Still, I did, and it was captivating. You’re thinking I’m digressing now – but I promise you I’m not. You see, where a jaguar prowls stealthily and majestically between the trees of the jungle, a Range Rover does much the same driving through rural Britain, blending into the scenery like it was born to be in such a habitat. But, like the jaguar, the Range Rover we have here can launch into predator
mode at any given moment – and that’s because it has the heart of a Jaguar. This L322 Range Rover breathes using a Jaguar-derived 4.2-litre supercharged V8 nucleus that generates 400bhp and sounds like a jaguar (the mammal variant) warning off scavengers from a fresh kill. However, in the animal kingdom you can never be too stuffed from gorging on your fellow furry friends, and in true dog-eat-dog style, the owner of this Rangey has developed an appetite for more power. A new supercharger pulley should do the trick and in this case estimations show a possible 30bhp increase in total power. Ample. The extra power comes from the fact that this is a smaller pulley. That, therefore, means the belt spins the pulley faster, compressing more air in the supercharger and in turn generating more power. I should make it clear this isn’t a DIY workshop task. Some of the processes involved in fitting the new pulley require a number of specialist tools and we’re showing you the pulley installation simply as an interesting feature rather than something we’d suggest you try at home. Without further ado, then, here is how you give your supercharged Rangey even bigger fangs.
1 1. John, one of Derby 4x4’s senior technicians, starts by removing the engine cover 2. He then releases the air supply to the supercharger – which resembles the back of an armadillo

6. ‘X’ marks the spot. That’s the original pulley that is currently sitting over the supercharger’s shaft. The belt has been taken off and we have enough room to get the angle grinder in The new pulley will use the same principal as a sprinter, where if you have more air flowing into the compressor – thanks to the belt spinning faster – the more oxygen can be forced through the supercharger and a better performance with more horsepower is the outcome

7. The angle-grinder is necessary because the exisiting pulley is clasped so tightly around the base of the supercharger’s shaft. These components are machined to precision, and as such, micro fractions can be noticed as to whether something fits or not. The key with the grinder is to not grind too close to the shaft
7 8. Here, sticking out like a sore thumb, is the tip of the shaft, ready to receive another, even more compact, pulley
8 9. Hot, hot, hot! The new pulley must be heated to the extreme, so that the metal expands and can be slid onto the shaft, before cooling and clasping onto its new home
9 10. If you’ve heated it properly, the pulley will be too hot to handle. So try using a clamp, perhaps similar to those used when changing a fuel filter on a Td5 90?

11. When sliding on the new pulley, you will have just one chance. If it gets stuck halfway down the shaft and is cooling all the while, there’s only one way it shall come off again (see picture 7...) Once positioned and aligned, with the pulley flush with the end of the shaft, leave to cool and try to collect any residue that drops from the hot pulley

Step Up
Project Td5: This month we’ve been to Masai 4x4. We needed to upgrade the steps on our 90 – so we did Words and Pictures: Mike Trott
S
ide steps can be easily used and forgotten about, in the same way that a toilet can be. They’re useful to have around, but you don’t give them much thought once they’ve served their purpose. However, over the course of time,
1
things need to be upgraded and modernised. They have to be improved, because stagnation and a lack of progress is bad. So while you can now get toilets with a soft-close feature and eco flushes, there are side steps out there
2
for Defenders much better than the original genuine parts. Now, obviously, there’s nothing revolutionary about side steps, you still walk all over them just like steps of old. But where the original steps on our 90 were the chrome, shiney and
slippery-natured units, we wanted something a little smarter – and safer – to use. Masai 4x4 stock these wonderful ‘Fire and Ice’ tubular side steps that look like exactly the sort of item we were looking for.
3
4
1. The original side steps that were fitted were particularly lethal when wet – time for a change 2. First thing is to loosen the bolts holding the existing steps in place. Loosen, but keep the bolts in, for now... 3. ...it means that you won’t have a lump of metal crashing down on your head! 4. Once loose, you can ease the bolts out and lift the steps down and out 5. Take a moment to assess where you’re going to fit the new steps – there are a number of holes to choose from 6. Once decided (preferably as central as possible), be sure to fit the steps on the outer edge for greater strength 7. These ‘Fire and Ice’ steps have two additional arms for greater support and fitting 8. We fitted the one arm behind the front trailing arm, where it clamps onto part of the chassis
10
9
9. The other was fitted through the hole next to the rear arm. You’ll need to remove the existing bolt first 10. Once positioned, THEN you can set about tightening up all the components for a perfect fit
8
7
5
6
They fit all 90s and 110s from ‘83 onwards, and speaking of fitting, Masai offer a service of just that. So naturally, we thought we’d grab the camera, head on down to Masai and show the pros in action. In the meantime, check out their products at www.masai4x4.com

All the information you need – in one place – to buy your perfect Landy
A Serie-ous Investment? In focus: Series III 2.25 Petrol
1971-1985 £1500-£25000 The Stats Land Rover Series III 2.25 Petrol • • • • • • • •
Power: 74bhp Torque: 120lb/ft 0-60: One month Top speed: Glacial MPG: Questionable Tax: Exempt on early examples, cheap otherwise Insurance group: 15-20 Towing capacity: 3500kg
Pros: Classic Land Rover styling, Series character, parts still widely available, later examples more durable, dash Cons: Rust, not as ‘pure’ as its predecessors, gearbox not as slick (although gears have syncromesh throughout)
Insure your Series III 2.25 Petrol with Adrian Flux from as little as £70
N
o matter what your preferred type of Land Rover is, you simply cannot deny the lure of a Series Landy and the character in which it possesses. These are true classics and, as such, the market has opened its eyes into the investment opportunities in these analogue relics. But while Series Is and IIs are getting increasingly rare to find at respectable prices, the Series III offers a welcome alternative and a smarter investment to its much sought-after predecessors. If you’re looking for a resto project, the Series IIIs can still fetch strong money if they have been rejuvenated with care, but you can pick up a decent runner for just a few thousand pounds. Your Series III still carries the charm of the older Green Ovals, but some of the tweaks that were made over the outgoing IIA meant the III was a little more approachable day to day.
* Based on a 1973 variant, 50 year old driver, average area, office worker, 9 years NCB, 5000 miles a year, with agreed value and green lane and off-road cover, no claims or convictions and £100 excess.
To see whether this could be the model of Land Rover for you, or even the potential investment you’ve been waiting for, we’ve caught up with Andy Walker of Alex Engineering based down in Tring, Hertfordshire. Andy has spent most of his life around Series Land Rovers and old steam locomotives, so he’s well-versed in the foibles of the Series III. ‘The main mechanical issues with the III come from the classic lack of maintenance and when owners don’t service them often enough,’ says Andy. ‘The gearbox was redesigned after the IIA as well and Land Rover successfully made it less driver friendly. ‘Kingpins on the front axle are a ralco bush type and often wear out if starved of the correct lubricant – you’ll need EP90 oil for this.’ In addition, one of the features people like to have is the free-wheeling hubs, but Andy warns that not engaging
them often enough in order to splash lube over the kingpins can cause more problems than they’re worth. Naturally, corrosion is an issue that affects the Series III, as with virtually every Land Rover, with Andy citing the chassis and bulkhead as particular ‘favourites’. Buyers should also be aware that ‘a nice paint job and new canvas top doesn’t make it a good car!’ So, assuming you find an example that doesn’t have more holes than cheese, is there certain models to avoid? ‘The later production models manage to rust quite well and are probably either dead or rebuilt by now. The long wheelbase one-ton version was impressive, but had a very low ratio gearbox with special internals in the transfer box, which made them incredibly slow at full chat (I know... we owned one).’ Another plus with the longer wheelbased variants is that the rear axle was
a heavy-duty unit meaning halfshafts weren’t broken quite as easily. There are other reasons why a Series III is preferable to a I or a II as well. ‘There is a heater and screen demister with controls accessible by the driver, the dash has clocks positioned in front of the driver, while there is a stork carrying light controls, plus the wheels have decent size wheel studs
and nuts to help prevent wheel nut hole wear.’ Our personal tip would be to get a later Series III with a galvanised chassis and bulkhead, if you can stretch that far, as the models from 1980 onwards carried the stronger five-bearing 2.25 petrol. Equally, you could buy a cheaper version and run it as a project. Either way, the SIII is one for the future.
Series I (1948-1958)
I
f you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go. The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike. Its 1940’s engineering gives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once
were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then a finished example will fetch mega bucks. Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished examples now retailing where they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game. The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets. But can you really put a price on such an icon?
Series II/IIA (1958-1971)
I
n 1958, the second-generation Land Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders. Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts. The prices are on the increase, however, as these 50-year-old vehicles start to come into their own as a collector’s
item. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2.0-litre diesel, were underpowered and noisy. The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of refinement over the Series I. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks.
Series III (1971-1985)
F
ollowing on from the Series IIA, the Series III emerged in 1971 with a few cosmetic tweaks to freshen up the model. Headlights were shifted out to the wings in-line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top of the bulkhead – not sure it’s a five stars on the Euro NCAP scale, though. The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar
to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout its production, although in 1980 the 2.25 motors switched to a more durable five bearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with. They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.
Lightweight (1968-1984)
P
ossibly the ugly duckling of the Series Land Rover family – but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t find much love for the Series Lightweights. These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance that does divide opinion on occasion. To mimic the civvy Series ma-
chines, the SIII LWT – built from 1972 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings. These Series Lightweights throw up an extra dimension to Land Rover ownership, with military history and touches often machine-gunning the vehicle. It means you get a Land Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd.
Forward Controls (1962-1978)
O
nly serious enthusiasts need continue reading here. Ownership of any Forward Control is not for the faint-hearted. These leviathans are expensive to run and trying to get hold of some of the parts can be, quite frankly, a bit of a nightmare! Clubs can help here, though, as is often the case with any Land Rover. These vehicles offer substantial
payloads if that’s the sort of thing you’re after, but will also tick the boxes for huge, unnecessary and hilariously addictive fun. If you’re going to go the whole hog then why not buy a 101FC. You’ll have a V8 engine harping away underneath you (literally) and people are likely to clear out of your way when they see you coming in their mirrors. Surely that’s reason enough to buy one?

Ninety/One Ten (1983-1990)
T
he icon of the 4x4 world. This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you just about anywhere in the world. Early examples of the Ninety and One Ten are worth keeping hold of, providing they’re in good condition – but you’ll be searching far and wide for examples that are. This was the birth of the Defender, despite not being christened officially
until 1990, and as such these Land Rovers had coil-sprung suspension, new engines – although they were still terribly underwhelming – and offroad capability that has still yet to be matched today. A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5TD version with low miles and good history. They’re robust and as simple as they come.
Defender 200Tdi (1990-1994)
I
n 1990, the Defender name emerged and with it a cementing of a legacy that already stretched back over 40 years. This was... is the best 4x4 by far. It carried the Tdi badge for the first time and meant that no longer was a Defender being powered by a feeble hamster in a wheel. If you’re in the market for a 200 Defender, though, you might get a 200 unit but it might not necessarily
be from a Defender. Replacing blown units with a Disco 200Tdi is popular, so check the arrangement of the turbo and manifold. The 200Tdi is probably the best for off-roaders, so many of these vehicles will have been worked hard. Some owners have now started restoring these vehicles, meaning a premium price – but can you really put a price on perfection...?
Defender 300Tdi (1994-1998)
A
fter the 200 followed the 300Tdi. Essentially, this was a revised version of the predecessor – perhaps a little more refined – but still with the same durability. These engines, providing they are properly maintained, can last for decades. Look around for one with full service history and you could find yourself a keeper. Some Tdi Defenders have received
galvanised chassis and even bulkheads, and these are the type of Defender you should be after. A futureproof Landy. By the time the 300Tdi came out, Land Rover was now giving the Defender power steering as standard and disc brakes all-round. It’s the little things after all. Arguably the company’s greatest engine, balancing performance and practicality. The Defender in its prime.
Defender Td5 (1998-2007)
F
ollowing on from the Tdi era, Land Rover issued the Defender with its Td5 engine from 1998 to 2007. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure that any mods have been done properly. Remaps, EGR valve deletes and uprated intercoolers are a few examples
of what many have been subject to. Lots of power doesn’t always mean happy faces. The rear of the chassis has frequently been called into question, so protect the rear crossmember if it’s in good shape, or else face the consequences. With minimal electrics, the Td5 Defender is still a DIY machine and you’ll be working on one of Land Rover’s most notable masterpieces.
Defender TDCi (2007-present)
T
he last of the Defenders were fitted with Ford Transit engines – first the 2.4 TDCi, followed by the 2.2 TDCi, brought in to meet Euro V emission standards and keep the Defender alive for another few years. Sadly, these engines denoted the Defender’s swansong, the twilight of its days. They were fitted with six-speed gearboxes, still had phenomenal offroad capability and even made the
Defender a nice place to be. But they were still very much Defenders. The era of blinging also began and you can find special editions out there costing obscene amounts of money. You will pay a premium for these Defenders, especially since the end of production. But if you can grab a 2.2 TDCi and start preserving it now, you may well never see depreciation. We’re no financial advisors, though...
£2500-£15000 Versions: Ninety (‘84-’90), One Ten, 127 (‘83-’90). 2.25 4cyl petrol (‘83-’85), 3.5 V8 (‘83-’90), 2.5NA 4cyl diesel (‘84-’90), 2.5 4cyl petrol (‘85-’90), 2.5TD (‘86-’90). Pros: Good ones are now worth saving, same ability as Tdi Defenders Cons: Not many left in good condition, engines underpowered
£3500-£25000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (19901994). 200Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel.
Pros: Legendary off-road, one of the very best engines Cons: Genuine Defender 200Tdi units are getting rare, many have been used hard
£3500-£30000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (19941998). 300Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel.
Pros: A slightly more refined Tdi powerplant, the best? Cons: Erm... erm... hmm, this is hard
£4000-£20000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (19982007). Td5 2.5 5cyl turbo-diesel.
Pros: Off-road capability, power, reliability (generally) Cons: Rear chassis, premium prices at the moment
£8000-£60000+ Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (20072016). 2.4 TDCi (‘07-’12), 2.2 TDCi (‘12-’16).
Pros: Better emissions (marginally), more creature comforts, same offroad prowess Cons: Price, more electrics, last of the breed
Freelander 1 (1997-2006)
A
s a general rule, we’d tell you to avoid the Freelander 1 at all costs, simply because no single version is without its hindrances. Still, if you insist on investing in such a bottomless pit, then we can at least advise. But while we can advise, we cannot tolerate you going anywhere near the 1.8 petrol. It’s a cow pat waiting to blow up in your face. Simple as. The petrol V6 is pokey, but requires
much coolant. The 2.0Di engine is pretty miserable and gutless, hereby making the TD4 the only real option to go for that will let you keep your dignity in tact. All the usual tips apply: make sure it has been regularly serviced and maintained to a high standard and you might end up with a very cheap route into Land Rover ownership. It’s not even that bad off-road...
Freelander 2 (2006-2015)
M
ost people will turn their noses up at Freelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true Land Rovers. But while you should turn your nose up at the FL1, the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think. Because of it being replaced by the Discovery Sport, the FL2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels of refinement, a strong 2.2-litre
four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make for a great family vehicle. Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there. Prices are now falling thanks to the Freelander name disappearing from the production line, but for £10,000 you can now get a capable all-rounder that is actually pretty adept off-road and yet still economical to run.
51
£500-£7200 Versions: 1.8 4cyl petrol (‘97-’05), 2.0Di 4cyl diesel (‘97-’00), TD4 2.0 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘00-’06), 2.5i V6 petrol (‘00-’05).
Pros: Cheap Cons: Cheap for a reason
£3700-£31000 Versions: 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel, available in two- or four-wheel drive, 3.2 V6 petrol (‘07-’09).
Pros: Better off-road than you may anticipate, reliability, refinement, economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing
52
Range Rover Classic (1970-1996)
T
he Range Rover Classic is one of those vehicles that you could theoretically still use everyday in the 21st Century. If you’re running a V8, however, that may not be such a wise idea. Classic Range Rovers still provide a relatively refined and great drive today, but they can be thirsty if you’re not in one of the various turbo-diesel examples. That said, if you own one and it’s
in good condition – look after it, as it will only appreciate. These vehicles are popular with collectors. Unfortunately, in terms of spare parts, many have succumb to corrosion or have been abused off-road to the point of no return. While an early ‘70s Classic may not be attainable for everyone, tidy examples of the late four-door versions can make for an equally tidy investment.
Range Rover P38A (1994-2002)
M
any people believe the P38A Range Rover to be a bit of a menace – and often it’s completely justified. Lights on the dashboard, air suspension failure, head gasket failure... the list can really continue. Still, it’s not all doom and gloom with the P38. In fact, if you find one in good working order, it’s sensational. Service history is a must, and if you’re going to own one then some
diagnostic equipment is going to be a better companion than a spanner. Avoid the diesel variant as the engine was adopted from a BMW saloon and isn’t up to the task of the extra weight a Range Rover carries. Go for a 4.6 HSE, it’s actually more economical than the 4.0 V8 and you’ll get all the toys (working or not). Or you could try and find an anniversary model or even a Holland & Holland...
Range Rover L322 (2002-2012)
C
ompared to the P38, the L322 Range Rover was a saint. Generally. Its electronic aids were far less temperamental and it delivered a new level of luxury to four-wheeled motoring. The Td6 receives mixed reviews: some say it’s underpowered while others say it’s the best of the bunch. Common sense would steer you towards a TDV8, either the 3.6 or 4.4, but these are the L322s holding out
for strong money. Notably, the petrol V8s are lingering with very appealing price tags, but don’t think running one would be cheap. As with many 21st Century Land Rovers, they have lost their accessability for the home mechanic. Drivetrain faults are becoming more frequent, so you need to look for that FSH. As a car, however, it’s probably all the car you’ll ever need.
Range Rover L405 (2012-present)
I
f you want the very best in automotive luxury, then look no further. The latest incarnation of Land Rover’s flagship Range Rover weighs a whopping 400kg less than its predecessor thanks to the use of an aluminium body, which helps on mpg – although owning one of these suggests that your cash flow isn’t particularly an issue. This is the last word in elegance and majestic motoring. All the engines
supply copious amounts of power to your right foot, while the L405 hasn’t lost any of its off-road pedigree... even if taking one off-road is like asking your alcoholic friend to a wine-testing session. They could comfortably partake, but probably shouldn’t. Prices are still only right for Premier League footballers and people with a link to the royal family. If you fit into that category, then we envy you.
RR Sport 1 (2005-2013)
M
uch of the Range Rover Sport was borrowed from the Disco 3, in fact it shared virtually identical underpinnings, whereas today’s RR Sport uses actual Range Rover foundations. Nevertheless, Land Rover put a Range Rover in a tracksuit and attempted to make a handler out of it. To some extent they succeeded, although it’s no sports car despite what it says on the back of the vehicle.
It can play the leisure vehicle very well, though, and will go off-road like the best of them. If you’re going to buy one, then you need to love it for itself, becausse a Discovery of the same era is more practical, while a full-fat Range Rover is always going to carry an extra layer of prestige. They’re still a good all-rounder, though, and now relatively affordable.
£800-£90000 Versions: Two-door (‘70-’85), four-door (‘81-’96), LSE (‘92-’96). 3.5 V8 petrol (‘70-’86), 3.5 EFI V8 petrol (‘86-’89), 3.9 EFi V8 (‘89-’96), 2.4 VM turbo-diesel (‘86-’92), 200Tdi (‘92-’94), 300Tdi (‘94-’96). Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust (again), availability of parts for early models, V8 thirst
£600-£11000 Versions: 4.0 V8 petrol, 4.6 V8 petrol, 2.5 6cyl turbo-diesel.
Pros: Luxury, price, a Land Rover that doesn’t rust. Could even P38 prices rise soon? Cons: Electrics. Nuff said
£4000-£40000 Versions: 3.0 Td6 (‘02-’06), 4.4 V8 petrol (‘02-’07), 3.6 TDV8 (‘06-’10), 4.4 TDV8 (‘10-’12), 4.2 supercharged V8 petrol (‘05-’09), 5.0 supercharged V8 petrol (‘09-’12).
Pros: Great off-road, luxury, image, TDV8 powerplants Cons: Your maintenance bill
£45000-£150000 Versions: 3.0 TDV6, 4.4 SDV8, 5.0 supercharged V8 petrol, 3.0 SDV6 hybrid (‘14-present).
Pros: Styling, engines, capability at pretty much everything Cons: Price
£7000-£40000 Versions: 2.7 TDV6 (‘05-’09), 3.0 TDV6 (‘09-’11), 3.0 SDV6 (‘11-’12), 4.4 V8 petrol (‘05-’07), 3.6 TDV8 (‘07’10), 4.2 supercharged V8 (‘05-’09), 5.0 supercharged V8 (‘09-’12). Pros: Decent performance from both engines and chassis, a lot of car for your money Cons: Not as practical as a Disco, not as prestigious as a proper Rangey
53
RR Sport 2 (2013-present)
T
he second-generation Range Rover Sport has also been on a diet to save over 400kg, just like the daddy Range Rover. That means that even this big bruiser is relatively economical when spec’d with the SDV6 motor. Some won’t like the vulgar and flamboyant posture, while others will adhere to the smart, yet mean styling. But no one can knock the Sport for its
£43000-£130000
performance. It feels incredibly light for such a big car, and if you’ve robbed a bank and can afford the SVR version, it’s as good round a race track as it is on a green lane. The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Removing limbs is possibly the most feasible option, or wait ten years and see if the prices have come tumbling down off those high pedestals.
RR Evoque (2011-present)
W
hen the Range Rover Evoque was launched, it signalled Jaguar Land Rover’s intent on hitting the mass market. And given that the Evoque is their fastest-selling vehicle to-date, they’ve clearly done the job. That doesn’t mean it’s a hit with purists. They don’t much like the fact Victoria Beckham was involved in the designing of it, nor that it is the polar opposite to a Defender.

PERENTIE
The mightiest Land Rover of all?
Toy Story
The little boy who grew up to build a real-life version of the model Landy he used to play with
Modded • Enhanced • Revived One great Landy after another featured inside
Pros: Feels light considering weight, engines, almost as luxurious as its bigger brother Cons: You’ll need deep pockets
£14000-£48000
It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac, but it would rather not go down that route. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and because there are so many out there, they have decent residuals. Go for a five-door with the new Ingenium engine, and make it the 4WD version. The 2WD model may be eco-friendly but what is a Range Rover without four-wheel drive?
Versions: 2.2 SD4 (‘11-’15), 2.0 Si4 4cyl petrol, 2.0 TD4 (‘15-present).
Pros: Economy, handling, beats rivals off-road Cons: Not as practical as the new Discovery Sport

Discovery 1 (1989-1998)
T
he earliest version of the Discovery was aimed purely at providing a middle ground between the agricultural Defender and the luxury, upper-class Range Rover. It carried much of the Defender’s capabilities, but added more refinement and a driving experience more suitable to families – but without a Range Rover price tag. Blessed with the same wonderful
Tdi engines, the Discovery saved Land Rover and hit back at offerings from other nations by being an affordable all-rounder. And that still holds true even today. Early Discovery 1s in fine condition are now classics and will continue to appreciate. We would recommend trying to find a tidy and later 300Tdi example, but watch out for body rust – the boot floor, arches and wings etc.
Discovery 2 (1998-2004)
F
ollowing on from the first-generation Discovery, in 1998 Land Rover gave its family SUV some minor cosmetic tweaks and a whole new power unit in the shape of the Td5. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure any mods have been done properly. You can also buy a V8, but
the fuel bill isn’t going to be welcome, plus they’re more temporamental. Unlike on the D1, its the chassis that’s the problem, not the body. We all know that Discos make for a great tow car, and consequently many of the rear chassis on D2s have dipped their rears into the sea. Not all of them live to tell the tale... Get a later example for more creature comforts and difflocks too.
Discovery 3/4 (2004-present)
T
he Discovery went through a dramatic revamp for its launch in 2004, but it came out the other side as one hell of a vehicle. Greatly improved in terms of power and refinement, the Disco 3 received the relatively economical 2.7 TDV6 engine (although the thirsty 4.4 V8 petrol was an option) and became the first Land Rover to be given Terrain Response. If you need one vehicle in
your life, this could be the one that ticks the most boxes at once. Be weary of maintenance costs, especially as you approach the 105,000mile/seven-year mark that means the timing belt is due – it’s a body-off job! The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines are even better, with monumental amounts of torque. Luxury has also increased significantly in later examples. A later SDV6 model is best.
Discovery 5 (2017-present)
L
aunched just a couple of months ago, this latest Discovery is still yet to hit the UK roads on mass. Land Rover needed to improve economy in particular with this edition of the Disco, and having chopped 480kg from the kerbweight, it would seem their proficiency in the use of lightweight technologies is only getting better and better. We’ve yet to drive the latest Discov-
ery, but expectations are high – especially as this will be Land Rover’s most capable SUV in production. New engines look promising on paper, and Land Rover has listened to customers regarding the infotainment system. It will remain to be seen whether the changes have quenched the thirst of the critics, though. We reckon the base Sd4 model could turn out to provide all you really need.
Discovery Sport (2015-present)
B
rought in to replace the Freelander 2, the Discovery Sport was the vehicle that turned the Discovery brand into a family. It has come to be so much more than a re-badged Freelander, though. For starters, the Discovery Sport has seven seats (just), drives better than a Freelander 2 and is now more refined thanks to the Ingenium Td4 engine. Land Rover is now churning out
substantial units of the baby Disco, now even matching the Evoque for pace as one of the fastest-selling vehicles they make. It’s a more usable vehicle than the Evoque, though, and carries less of the feministic stigma that often surrounds the Evoque. Grab a cleverly-spec’d SE Tech for a car that can be as practical as a daddy Disco, but for a more attractive price.
£500-£3500 Versions: 200Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘89-’94), 300Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘94-’98), 3.5 V8 (‘89-’93), 3.9 V8 (‘94-’98). Pros: Almost as every bit as good as the Defender off-road, price, practicality Cons: The body rusts like it’s been doused in sea water
£1500-£7400 Versions: Td5 2.5 5cyl turbo-diesel, 4.0 V8.
Pros: Td5 power and reliability, great all-rounder, better comfort than D1, diff locks for ‘03 onwards Cons: Rear chassis crumbles like its dessert namesake
£5800-£56000 Versions: 2.7 TDV6, 4.4 V8 (‘04’09), 3.0 TDV6 (‘09-’12), 3.0 SDV6 (‘12-present).
Pros: Off-road capability, usability for every occasion, luxury on later models, torque of 3.0-litre engines Cons: Maintenance costs, air compressor on D3s, D4s not so cheap
£43500-£68300 Versions: 2.0 Sd4, 3.0 Td6, 3.0 Si6 (‘16-present).
Pros: Most technologically-advanced Land Rover to-date, keeps Discovery practicality Cons: Not many can afford one currently, easy to mistake for D Sport
£28000-£46000 Versions: SD4 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel (Jan ‘15 - Aug‘15), TD4 Ingenium 2.0 4cyl turbo-diesel (Aug ‘15 onwards).
Pros: More practical than an Evoque – and less vulgar, seven seats, still great off-road Cons: Back seats only for small mammals, price of high-spec models
