he world is full of charidee events, usually involving people whose careers are on the slide turning up to sing or fool around and make ‘jokes’ at the expense of those who voted Leave or who don’t read The Guardian. But then there are events like this that remind you what it should be about. We’re all aware of the huge demands we make of our under-resourced military (well, all of us who aren’t politicians), and we’re also well aware of the scourge of PTSD, which can afflict soldiers years after the event. Some veterans try to deal with PTSD by going on expeditions but sometimes that makes it worse if the expedition is a slow slog through harsh

Over the last five years Jaguar Land Rover has invested more than £11bn in its business, helping to make it the UK’s largest car manufacturer, and helping to make many Land Rover fans extremely happy. The company isn’t stopping there though. Now it’s investing another £200m in expanding its design and engineering centre at Gaydon. This is the first major investment in a non-manufacturing site for over ten
years, so it will leapfrog the centre ahead, with plenty of capacity for future growth. The aim is of course a huge one – we’d expect nothing else these days from a company expanding globally with growing confidence. The aim is simply to make the centre one of the world’s foremost sites for automotive product, engineering and design. Chris Elliott, who is Property Programmes Director for JLR, says:
‘The new space will centralise our design, product engineering and purchasing functions in an original and modern environment, as well as creating additional capacity for the future.’ Right now, JLR is enjoying record growth and sales virtually worldwide, but it’s great to see our favourite company not resting on its laurels, but continuing to look to the future.

terrain where everyone has too much solitary time to think about stuff they’d rather not think about. Expedition company Max Adventure fully understands what helps and what doesn’t. So, under the Driven to Extremes initiative, they’re organising an expedition to Europe’s highest village. That doesn’t sound too hard, but actually it’s a village called Ushguli in Georgia. That’s a 6600-mile adventure, coming back via Stalingrad and Moscow. The event should help the veterans who will be going on it – and they’ll be too busy to think - but you can help raise money for the veterans while also having a challenging time in your Landy. Max Adventure is organising a fund-raising trip, to raise funds for that big expedition in September. The fund-raiser is not to Europe’s highest

50 Years of Velar

f you go to a new visitor attraction at the Solihull manufacturing plant, you’ll see Land Rover’s tour which shows you how they’ve been working on the Velar for half a century. True, not quite the one they’ve just launched, but the original Velar, which goes back to 1967. As you may know, the first secret prototype that became the Range Rover was conceived there, and given

the codename of Velar. Now, you can go on a manufacturing tour of the new Velar facility at Solihull, but we’d definitely take a chance to go on the history tour. Mister Land Rover, aka Roger Crathorne, has been involved in setting it up, so you know it’ll be good. He says: ‘The exhibit tells the incredible story of the Range Rover, from the original Velar prototype through to today’s new model. At the time I began my career in 1967 as a Technical Assistant on the Velar Team, the intention was never to build a luxury vehicle. Over the 50 years since, the Range Rover has come a long way.’ It certainly has. rikey, it’s been quite a month! And what an issue we have for you this time out. I mean, we’ve everything from an army reservist’s Series III and his first venture into Land Rover ownership, right through to a brief look at whether the Evoque Convertible really has a purpose within Land Rover’s stable. But one vehicle I’d like to draw your attention to is David Bowyer’s 90. I’m fairly confident that after you’ve seen the pictures and read about the ridiculous amount of modifications on this vehicle, you’ll envy David a considerable amount. Perhaps the ideal off-roader? It certainly is for David. Elsewhere in this edition of your favourite monthly Land Rover fix, we look at the third and final vehicle we’re featuring from Mike Rivett’s Land Rover collection. To you and I, his Series I V8 may not seem as special as the Pre-Pro or the Tickford that have graced these pages before it, but then we’re not the owner. If you ask Mike, however, he’ll tell you why he has such a connection to this particular machine and that is down to it being the start of his own personal Land Rover journey. We all start somewhere. My first encounter up close and personal with a Land Rover came shortly after joining The Landy, incidentally just after the first issue had been launched. I had gone to visit All Terrain Services near Swansea, and a gentleman named Bob Harris – a terrific guy – showed me how they run their training courses and as a result, I became a mock pupil at the wheel of a Defender 110 300Tdi. I shall never forget the experience; feeling the connection between man and machine that few modern vehicles could ever dream of delivering to the driver. s the days start to become longer and we all regain the ability to leave the house wearing just a single layer of clothing, it can only mean one thing. We’re on the brink of Land Rover event season, or what other people call, Summer. And what better way to enjoy this period of mildly higher temperatures than with the annual Charity
Land Rover Run, which in its 2017 incarnation will be taking around 40 Landies from Kent to Kemmelberg in Belgium, all in the name of the MakeA-Wish Foundation. The journey begins on Friday 2nd June with the ensemble of vehicles making their way across the Channel by ferry. From there they’ll head for their overnight base in Poperinge, just inside the Belgian border. After taking a well-earned rest, Saturday will provide the teams with a
chance to dabble in a spot of sightseeing around the local area. This is all building up, of course, to the main event that will take place on Sunday, some fifteen minutes away in the village of Kemmelberg. Here, on the village green, the charity auction will take place with all proceeds going towards helping improve the lives of children with life-threatening conditions across the UK. A very noble cause and a marvellous way of utilising a stack of classic Land Rovers, on what we would full expect to be a beautiful and brilliant road trip through rural France and into le Belgium. ook, this is getting ridiculous. Every time JLR releases sales figures they’re higher than ever. Every time you think they can’t keep going up like this – and they do. March was no different. Perhaps the scale of it all is best shown by two facts. The first is that the Range Rover Evoque, the
fastest-selling Land Rover product ever remember, had, yes, another record-breaking month. But despite that, it lost its title of fastest-selling Land Rover. That title is now held by the tenacious Discovery Sport which outsold it. Astonishing. With the new Discovery model just having its first month of sales too, all
that adds up to a JLR product being registered every 30 seconds throughout the month of March, for a total of 31,767 vehicles. Oh and of course the new Velar isn’t far away either, so we can only guess what all this will do to sales figures over the rest of this year. Oh, hang on, we don’t need to guess do we?

ack in the day, an image of a woman who worked in engineering would probably feature a lass in a boiler suit, her hair tied up with a colourful scarf, and with a cute smudge of grease on her nose. Times have apparently changed. And leading that change is Jaguar Land Rover and Getty Images. The two organisations have joined together to produce a better and more accurate visual portrayal of women who work in engineering, and more generally in the STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and maths. JLR has a practical interest since in just the last four years the female percentage of the workforce has grown from 9% to 11%. And JLR wants that to go higher. So one way is to better represent the sort of jobs and environments that women really work in within the STEM industries, rather than relying on old stereotypes where there would have been pin-ups on the wall and quite a lot of ‘banter’. There’s clearly a need in the market for a new look. Getty Images says that web traffic for imagery about women in engineering is rising sharply. The search term ‘women + stem’ has gone up by 526% just in the last 12 months. The collaboration between Jaguar Land Rover and Getty Images was, neatly, launched on International Women’s Day, and you can see some of the images here: Women in Engineering.

erribly sorry, chaps, but it would seem we’ve missed out on the chance to be the first person to drive the new Range Rover Velar. Mind you, it’s probably fair to say that the person they selected to do the honours is certainly more photogenic than any of the apes offering from our undomesticated editorial department. Anyway, long story short, British popstar Ellie Goulding was the lucky devil chosen to showcase the new Velar over in the United States as her show in New York preceded a charity auction. Held at the East Side House Settlement Annual Gala, a Range Rover Velar was also auctioned off for charity in order to raise funds for the non-profit organisation that brings social and educational services to Manhattan and the Bronx. We’re certain that the Velar will likely be another JLR hit with the public, not that Miss Goulding needs a tutorial in how to produce those herself! Velar and Goulding is quite the collaboration, though. Speaking before the auction, Ellie said: ‘I have always been a big Range Rover fan and it was a pleasure to be a part of its launch here in the US. Even more rewarding to be supporting a local charity that improves over 10,000 lives every year in one of my favourite cities.’ Together, Ellie and the new Velar had more than one or two onlookers ‘starry eyed’...

es we can! Not just Bob the Builder, but all of us and that includes Jaguar Land Rover too. Our favourite company has recently signed an agreement with power supplier, EDF Energy. There’s a thing called REGO, which guarantees the origin of the power, which means that a proportion of JLR’s energy supply is guaranteed to come from renewable generation. Guess what proportion. Quite right, it’s 100%, all of it. This is a done deal, good until 2020, and is just part of JLR’s commitment to making vehicles in a way that doesn’t damage the environment more than necessary, and of course that then applies to the vehicles themselves. JLR already has one of the largest rooftop solar arrays in Europe, on the Engine Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton. This, plus the new 100% renewable energy supply plus many other initiatives, has resulted in a 38% reduction in the energy consumed in building a vehicle compared to 2007. Given the extensive scale of Jaguar Land Rover’s production, as one of the UK’s largest exporters, these things add up. For example, in the year to April 2016, the factory managed to recover and reuse 50,000 tonnes of press shop aluminium waste. The company puts that into perspective by pointing out that would make 200,000 Jaguar XE bodyshells, but we can think of some better ways this metal could have been put to use. So, take a note from Bob the Builder and Land Rover, and mind your emissions, keep your tailpipe gases down and try to reuse your own waste.

Feeling Flat There’s never a good time for the battery in your Landy to go flat, but you can usually count on it being a bad time. Like when you get back to it after an evening out and it won’t start. And it’s dark. And your bonhomie is fading as fast as your body warmth. And you’re way beyond street lamps or any form of immediate assistance or light. Yup, that’s always when it happens. But Nightsearcher is on your side. It has a seriously neat looking bit of kit that will help you illuminate things so you can see what you’re doing, and then it will jump start your rig. The StarBooster is one of those clever allin-one jobbies. So first off you need to be able to see what you’re doing as you fiddle with the bonnet release. The StarBooster has a bright LED floodlight, so you can light up the whole area. If you need to go in closer there is an inspection torch too. Having located the battery and not barked your knuckles too badly, you then attach the jump leads and hey
presto or voila, depending on which part of Lancashire you’re from. Should you need it, the whole torch can magnetically attach to your vehicle, and there are red flashing lights should you wish to attract attention to your plight. Although, in some parts of the country, you’ll not be very keen on advertising your state of distress at night.
Whatever, what a neat bit of kit this is. It also has a built-in Power Bank so you can charge up mobile devices to let others know where you are or to watch something uplifting on YouTube before heading home. Stop scratching Green laning and general off-road behaviour may be hugely enjoyable but usually there’s the odd reminder to take home – like those small scratches on the bodywork. Who’d have thought some small plant that produces lovely berries would be tough enough to scratch your paintwork? There are plenty of products on the market to deal with the scratch – and indeed the brambles, although flamethrowers are getting harder to find
these days. But for the scratch Autoglym has a new product, the Scratch Removal Complete Kit. All you have to do is provide the scratch. Then you take out the foam applicator and apply the foam. Autoglym has gone to some trouble to get the best applicator for the job, so it should gently get rid of the scratch. Then you get out the Perfect Finishing Cloth and apply the perfect finish, via the cloth. Hmm, I’m seeing a pattern here.
Then all you need to do is apply the Super Resin Polish, and the scratch will be nothing but a fading memory. The only downside, of course, is that bit of panel now looks far cleaner and shinier than the rest of the vehicle and means you’ll now have to do all the other panels. The complete kit costs just £16.99 and seems to have all the ingredients you’ll need, so there’s no need to start from scratch.

Lighting the Globe When you’re called Vision X Global Lighting Systems you’d better have a worldwide reach. Vision X certainly does – its systems are used by everyone
from Land Rover to NASA, covering everything from automotive to military, and from marine to agriculture. Control your Arms Meyle, an engineering company in Hamburg, has come up with a way to better control your arms, and for longer too. Actually that sounds like it involves a white jacket with lots of wraps and the arms round the back but you get the drift. Heavy-duty control arms are just the thing, but Meyle has gone further and replaced the OE hydro bushing with a full, hard-wearing rubber bushing. The hydro bushes can wear prematurely but these new bushes have high-grade elastomer with excellent resilience to the huge forces placed upon them. Not only are these control arms engineered with customary German precision, but they also come

If you feel your Landy could do with a bit more oomph, but don’t fancy going down an expensive and complex route then Tunit’s Power Pedal may be worth a gander. Basically, it’s a box that plugs in near your accelerator and is also connected to a dashboard panel where you can feed in various modes, like you can with some expensive cars. This allows you to choose between things like Eco and Sport Plus – one designed to save fuel the other to use that fuel to the maximum. The Tunit box intercepts the signals such as fuel injection timing, accelerator position and air mass, and calculates the optimum load for best performance and economy. The company claims it can increase power and torque by up to 20% and reduce harmful emissions – compared to other chip tuning services – by up to 27% and reduce fuel consumption by around 12%. First you need the Nakatanenga Alu-Box Pro, a strong, watertight, dustproof aluminium roof box to attach to your roof rack. Now you have a secure place to store stuff, but actually it’s not that simple to load or unload unless you’re constantly taking it on or off the roof. So you need the Box Inlays for the Alu-Box Pro. These are robust polyamide bags with a capacity of about 66 litres, and a neat waterproof window on the front so you keep lists of what is inside – should you be that organised of course. If you have disc brakes on your Landy and we kind of hope you do – although who are we to criticise drum brakes? – then you may have got slightly fed up with the way they go rusty every time a cat pees on them and fed up with the way they get pitted every winter and the salt comes out. Which is why they invented Geomet. Geomet is a new coating for discs, and one that stops them from rusting and pitting. Bearmach is a big fan, reckoning that ‘Geomet is fast becoming the new standard treatment finish being specified and applied by OEM manufacturers’. The coating has certainly been well tested with, for example, Geomet-coated discs being sprayed with salt water for 480 hours straight, a fate worse than watching Celebrity Big Brother on repeat for 20 weeks. ou know those jobs you’ve been meaning to do for, well, ever? Like putting up that shelf and starting that diet you harped on about as a New Year’s resolution? Imagine how smug you would feel if you could finish them all and marvel at your accomplishments. There is one person out there, though, who knows what that feeling is like after completing his ‘ambition’. The man in question had dreamed for many years of fully restoring and rebuilding a Tdi Land Rover 90 – but this isn’t any ordinary rebuild, dear reader. Of course, it would be only right to let the man himself explain to you why that is, so away you go, David Bowyer. ‘Anything that hasn’t been galvanised on the Defender is stainless steel or has been sheradised, which is an old Black
Country preservation method!’ smiles David. ‘The thought was there five years ago, and it all started with a roll cage I bought at Billing. “What vehicle is it for?” they asked,’ says David. ‘I told them, “It will be for a special project… when I finally get round to it!”’ At the time of writing, in April 2017, David reckons the 90 may be about 98% complete (he’s been saying this for a while) and just has a few more bits and pieces to add. It’s like eating out at one of those generic Chinese buffets. It starts so innocently until you get to the point where you’re thinking, ‘Just one more prawn cracker… just one more spare rib…’ and then before you know it, all the staff are having to wrestle you to the ground for fear of being eaten out of business. No? Just me then.
We’ll get to the finishing touches later. But first, if you’re going to spend two and a half years rebuilding a vehicle, you need to make sure it’s the right one! For David, it had to be a Tdi 90. ‘Over the last few years, we’ve used a 2002 Td5 90 for the shows and towing trailers,’ explains David. ‘I don’t drive it too often and, as much as I like the vehicle, I don’t like the ECU-driven five-cylinder engine and its drive-bywire throttle. ‘I like to feel the revs of the engine through the foot pedal – it’s much more gratifying!’ Things were less gratifying when David bought what he thought would be the perfect donor vehicle for the rebuild, only to find that after the removal of much crud the vehicle’s chassis was beyond economical repair.

We had to make a quick decision and unfortunately it was a little too quick,’ rues David. On the positive side, having budgeted for a replacement galvanised chassis anyway, all was not lost – especially when you can call on the help of a couple of friends. Jonathan and Greg have been off-roading with David for years and when Jonathan mentioned owning a genuine, unused, export Tdi chassis, everything started to fall into place. Now there are lots of intricate and neat details around this vehicle, one of which is the enlarged holes running along the bottom of the main chassis rails created by a cone cutter. The idea here being that it lets sediment and other debris flow back out of the rails rather than clogging up the insides. Because this vehicle uses a Td5 rear body as well, the rear tank carrier had to be welded into place in the middle. Naturally, the chassis was stripped before being hot-dip galvanised and hereby providing a brilliant futureproof platform. While the Defender has been rebuilt to be as durable as it can be – the galvanised bulkhead and steel cappings on the rear tub being a prime example – David’s 90 is first and foremost an off-roader. And, hell, it can really tackle the rough stuff ! ‘A good friend, Gwyn Lewis, recommended and supplied ARB Old Man Emu +2in shock absorbers and springs to match, along with heavy-duty propshafts and Sumo bars,’ describes David. There’s a whole lot more under there, as you’ll see from the pictures, but essentially everything blue under the 90 is from Gwyn Lewis. However, one of the star performers under the Defender has to be found in the axles. While Ashcroft Transmissions rebuilt the transfer box, David also sent them his two original diffs to let them work their magic. ‘They rebuilt them and fitted Detroit Truetracs, supplying us with front and rear heavy-duty halfshafts, CV joints and drive flanges to then fit once we got them back here,’ says David. Focusing on the Truetracs for a moment, these are torque-biasing limited-slip differentials and an alternative to diff lockers. ‘If one wheel gets light or lifts up, as much as 60% of the power can be transferred to the side with the grip,’ explains David. There was an element of siding needed when deciding what Tdi engine to fit. The original engine was a 200Tdi, but now far beyond repair. While David still remained keen on a 200, Jonathan suggested a reconditioned 300Tdi unit where spares are more readily available, and you have the benefit of a smoother and more refined motor. Left: Here’s the reconditioned 300Tdi falling into place, along with that huge fullwidth AlliSport intercooler and radiator ‘The fact he had a spare engine was a nice coincidence,’ smiles David. ‘So it was completely stripped and re-bored, the crankshaft and flywheel were rebalanced and Jonathan reassembled the engine fitting all new or refurbished components and completely rebuilt the head.’ A full-width AlliSport intercooler and radiator also provide some additional oomph while working with the installed boost pin. ‘Being a virtually new engine, we had a new speedo fitted reading from zero miles,’ says David. ‘The first MOT was done with just five miles on the clock!’ Not only was the speedo new, but here is an interior tailored to David’s exact requirements. The CB and amateur radio holder was designed by the man himself and built by Phil at Raptor Engineering. The voltage readout on the dash was provided by Roy at 4x4 Obsession, illustrating the outputs of the front and rear batteries plus that mighty G10 Goodwinch at the front. It’s not just the vehicle on a two-inch lift either. ‘I was fortunate enough to obtain a pair of “take off ” late-Puma heated seats and being rather short than tall, I installed my driver’s seat on some spacers to give myself a two-inch lift!’ chuckles David. He’s got the seating position, he has the setup he wants with Memory Map,
GPS and Terratrip all primed and ready for the moment he hits the lanes, and, with the seat box rubber soundproofing cover and one-piece heavy-duty floor and tunnel mat system from Wright Off-Road, David has the tranquillity around him to process all the mass of information coming at him. Honestly, I don’t think I have ever met anyone quite so enthusiastic and passionate about off-roading. Even now as the wise and matured Mr Bowyer (I shan’t divulge his age), his eagerness to get out on the lanes is second to none. You don’t need a second guess to work out what he’ll do once it’s time to retire! But what is it about Land Rovers that still gets David excited after all these years? ‘They are so versatile,’ he enthuses. ‘You can drive them to work, tow a
horsebox or caravan, tidy it up and go to a wedding and then do lots of serious off-roading in the mountains. And let’s hope the new Defender is the same!’ This is what David calls his tribute to 68 years of Land Rover, but it’s a tribute to David that he – and his friends – have created a Land Rover capable of seeing out another 68 years. David wishes to thank Jonathan, Greg and Gwyn, along with many others, for helping him build his perfect vehicle. A bulletproof engine, trusty drivetrain and galvanised chassis… a great team effort! e all have to start somewhere, don’t we? Everyone starts off in life dribbling on themselves and leaving all kinds of mess behind them, in every sense of the word. It’s the same with fluids. No one arrives in this world with a glass of Laphroaig in one hand, swirling it around with the swagger of an aristocrat. No, instead, we all suck, in one way or another. But after we’ve weaned ourselves off the soft stuff, our attentions turn to

Words and Pictures: Mike Trott more important things, like how one dresses oneself and what Land Rover to buy first. For many, your dream Land Rover isn’t going to be your first – but that is how it’s supposed to be. You weren’t born as cool as you are now… probably. You’ve had to work at it to become the sub-zero persona that you are today. When buying a Land Rover, though, kudos points are there for the taking, whatever the model. So, if you have to start out with a shed on four wheels that looks like it may
be blown over in a mild puff of flatulence, who cares! As long as it doesn’t smell like it. Think back to your first Land Rover and I bet you reminisce fondly over it. For some reason, the first is something we can always be more forgiving towards. Be honest with yourself, it was probably a bit crap, wasn’t it? Perhaps parts of it used to fall off down the road, or maybe it would excrete all over your driveway just when you thought it was starting to behave itself.
But throughout all the fractious moments, you loved it and, looking back now, you probably wish you still owned it, or at the very least, could take it for one last ride. If you had been smarter like our friend here, Mike Rivett, then you would have kept hold of it through thick and thin. In the last of our three-part series into Mike’s broad Land Rover collection, we’ve saved the ‘special one’ till the end. Yes, Mike owns a pre-production Series I, as you
saw in the previous issue, and he holds the keys to other exotic and brilliantly handsome Lode Lane vehicles, but only one Land Rover holds the key to his heart. Cue the soppy music. Going back to my original point, you’re thinking, ‘Okay, so why does he like this battered old machine?’ Well, it would be rude for us to tell you when Mike can tell you himself! ‘I’ve owned this Land Rover for 30 years after I part-exchanged my Haflinger for it at AJS Landrovers,’

This Land Rover is a 1958 Series I, meaning it started life with the bigger 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine unlike earlier incarnations of the original Green Oval. If this were an animal, however, it would most certainly be a chameleon as it’s been through more changes than Deep Purple’s band line-up. ‘It was a 2.0-litre,’ smiles Mike, ‘until I drowned it while green laning and knocked the big ends out! I then decided to fit it with the 1600cc motor for a while before switching to a 3.0-litre Essex engine. ‘That was then followed by a 3.1 Essex engine in full race trim, but a customer thought it would be better in his Capri so that paid for a low-mileage Range Rover engine and conversion,’ explains Mike. ‘I did a conversion for a customer and sold him my V8 engine, by which point my Rover Vitesse was coming to the end of its life – so I fitted it to my Series I including the injection.’ Unfortunately, as convenient as the idea may have been, these old Series Is don’t always have the biggest bays to shoehorn stuff into, and the injection proved to be an item too far. ‘There just wasn’t enough room under the bonnet, so it now has a twin-choke Weber instead of the injection system and it has been like

‘I love the look of the vehicle because you wouldn’t know it has a V8 under the hood’ this for many years now,’ reveals Mike. ‘I love the look of the vehicle because you wouldn’t know it has a V8 under the hood.’ It seems like you always partake of a bit of experimenting with your first. While Mike may have settled on his old Rover SD1 Vitesse’s powerplant – previously possessing 190bhp – it’s not only the vehicle’s centrepiece that has been altered either. For instance, at the front you’ll find disc brakes and the transmission boasts an overdrive facility – useful for Mike with this being his everyday workhorse, just like it would have been back in the Fifties. There’s a set of Forward Control rims on the Land Rover too, but other than that Mike’s Series I remains relatively standard. I think it’s awesome. Just the way it sits there holding its weathered patina, proudly displaying its history on its surface – it’s marvellous, and exactly how I imagine Maurice Wilks would want to see a Series I today. In terms of the vehicle’s history, though, all Mike knows is that his Land Rover once belonged to an Oxshott garage in Surrey, where it was used for garage breakdown duties. For

To him, that old V8-powered Series Landy sitting outside his house isn’t just another Land Rover to use – no, it’s like your favourite chair. There may be other chairs in the room; they may be bigger, better made and maybe even better for you. But despite that, you know there’s only one that fits you perfectly, and only one you’ll always return to.

Craig Allen formed his attachment to Green Oval machines back in the ‘80s while serving in Her Majesty’s Forces. So you’d be surprised to hear he’s only just joined the ranks of owners. Still, he was never going to fend off the charm of a Series Landy for ever

ou would think that having learnt to drive as a young soldier using a GS Half-Ton (or Lightweight) back in the ‘80s and having used a 109 to travel from the UK to the Czech Republic in the ‘90s, that I may have found time to own a Land Rover in the last 35 years or so. Oh, and that’s before I tell you I used a Wolf 90 in the second Iraq War
to journey from Basra to Baghdad to photograph the securing of the British Embassy by elements of 1 Para (1st Battalion, Parachute Regiment), my old unit. Swaledale on the way down. Surprisingly, however, I have not. Still, a couple of years ago I became determined to change that and began trawling eBay and other websites for a suitable vehicle.
After several failed bids on what looked like good bets, I finally came back to a rough-looking Hard Top being offered by a seller near Oxford. In shabby non-standard green paint, it wasn’t much to look at in the pictures, but mechanically didn’t sound too bad. More importantly, it came with a valid MOT with a few months left to run. Seeing as I live in Scotland, the fact it could be driven was important. Holding at £1500, I took a chance and offered the seller £1200, which was duly accepted. I got myself down to Oxford and met the seller, Sam, a young mechanic from a garage near Abingdon where the vehicle was currently sitting. On arrival I quickly spotted a nice shiny Series III, resplendent in blue, which they had obviously been restoring and, as it turned out, my Landy had been a donor for. Mine looked just as rough as in the pictures, but on closer

Above: Even though Craig has many years of service under his belt, he still serves and helps as a reservist today inspection I could see that the chassis was solid and the bulkhead corrosion limited to the driver’s door pillar and a couple of small holes in the footwells. The interior was generally tired but exaggerated with all the foam from the old headlining hanging down from the roof. Sam now jumped in and started her up; the 2.25 diesel barking into life with an impressive cloud of smoke from the exhaust – alarming, but not unusual. As I handed over the cash I could see the gleaming Series III across the garage - nice, but I was after a workhorse not a show pony. After many hours of driving and numerous coffee stops I pulled into the driveway back home and my wife, Cathy, came out to greet me. She looked the old girl up and down and smiled, saying ‘It looks nice.’ Of course, it didn’t. Bless her, she was merely trying to understand the insanity parked before her. Tired, I turned in for the night just hoping I hadn’t made a horrible mistake. My wife probably felt the same. The next morning, I concluded that I hadn’t done too badly, although it was clear she hadn’t been loved for some time. I got stuck in with the cleaning, scraping off all the old glue and foam from the missing headlining and gave her a good wash before rubbing down the panels. Some Matt Bronze Green paint along with some service items were sourced to try and put her back into some kind of order. Then I started looking for parts online to replace those that were either worn out or missing. Continued overleaf

The first item to go was a battered K&N filter and I found an original oil bath filter on eBay for a small sum. Next was a bolt and spacer to secure the spare tyre to the bracket already fitted to the bulkhead. It felt good to be putting her back together ready for work again. I serve as a reservist with 4 Para these days and was shortly due to spend a couple of weeks working on the ranges at Otterburn. The Land Rover would be ideal transport, so I had an incentive to get her sorted. With a good clean and new coat of paint applied, the old girl was gradually starting to look more like a usable vehicle. The shabby roof cleaned up well with a power sander and was given a fresh coat of white primer. I washed and scrubbed the original fabric seats, cleaned out the interior and fitted new gaiters and knobs to the control levers. Meanwhile, the spare was moved from its original position on the bonnet for an improved view up front. Happy with my handiwork, I filled the tank with diesel, checked all the levels and loaded her up with my range box and gear ready to head down to Cumbria for a couple of weeks back with the Colours. With weather on our side the old Series III proved its worth from the start,
ferrying me up to the ranges every day and swallowing all my gear with ease. It’s no mystery why the army has relied on them all these years. The two weeks in Otterburn were followed by a trip to North Yorkshire as 4 Para was training in Catterick and I was able to camp over in the beautiful surroundings of Swaledale on the way down. After these initial outings it was so far, so reliable, but it was clear she would need further work. Now back in regular use, more faults were starting to appear and a thorough service and some honest fettling were in order. Determined to see her receive the correct TLC, I checked her in with JS
Walker Automotive Engineers. She was booked for a thorough service and inspection, crucial given that the MOT was around the corner. I was fearful on my return, but I needn’t have been. Firstly she would need a new cover plate welding onto the rear differential, which was leaking badly. There was further welding required but this was limited to the driver’s door pillar, footwells, a crossmember and the front dumb irons. The rest of the chassis was pretty straight, although it had taken a knock at the back at some point and the rear crossmember would need pulling out a little. There was consequently damage to both the rear panels, one

PARTS of which I had already repaired with filler but the other could wait for the moment. I ordered a replacement exhaust system and would need to tidy the wiring behind the dash, plus the wiper motor was knackered. Easily sorted, of course. The brakes were generally in good condition, though, just needing to be stripped, cleaned and adjusted. Later it turned out the water pump was also leaking so I bought a replacement for that too. Generally, however, I was relieved – it could have been a lot worse. I sourced a couple of second-hand BFGoodrich ATs to replace the perished rears and found a couple of Defender steel wheels on eBay, which I rubbed down and gave a good coat of Limestone. With work complete, she flew through the MOT, passing with no advisories. So, back to work we went! This time, the destination was the MOD ranges at Barry Buddon, with glorious sunshine overhead as the boys zeroed their weapons and fired from various positions. The old wagon drew some admiring comments and the drive back over the Tay and via the minor roads to Edinburgh was a joy. The joy was short-lived, however, as the original 2.25 diesel started to knock and smoke, while getting harder to start from cold. Having just laid out a considerable sum to get her through the MOT it looked like I was faced with yet more expense. Annoying, but not entirely unexpected. A bit of online research seemed to point to the pump timing or the injectors and although the engine still pulled well, I knew I’d have to get it sorted. Another local garage quoted me £450 (a bit steep I thought) to change the injectors along with the glow plugs to cure the starting problems. I decided on a little self-help initially, ordering a set of glow plugs to fit myself and picking up some diesel cleaning additive to help clear the injectors. I’ll restrict her to local trips and then put her into the garage when I have the cash. I’m sure these are common issues for a Land Rover aged thirty-odd and picked up on eBay. Despite this, I have no regrets. I’ll continue to use her for her intended purpose, continuing with a rolling refurbishment as time and money allow. Owning a Series Land Rover may be challenging at times, but every time I see her sitting in the driveway, I smile. And you can’t put a price on that.

T
he relationship between a Land Rover and a soft-top design isn’t something new. Indeed, the very earliest Land Rovers donned canvas roof linings with sides that could be bundled up to let the wind wisp through the ‘cabin’. All these Land Rovers possessed the old-school charm of a Green Oval machine. But now, there’s a new breed of soft-top Land Rover. The Range Rover Evoque is, truthfully, not always revered within the circle of Land Rover enthusiasts. Here is a car that could be accused of contradicting traditional Land Rover philosophy and being more concerned with how it looks outside the school gates rather than how it prepares to get you there in the first place. But like any Land Rover produced from the dawn of time until now, it is still a very competent off-roader, but
with brilliant on-road credentials and a touch of added flair. So what happens when you lop off the roof? Does this undo all the positives in an Evoque? Usually, taking the roof off a car and replacing it with a non-metal alternative tends to make it a little more, well, flaccid. Apparently, the Evoque Convertible is something for all seasons, though, and supposedly has no drawbacks over a normal Evoque. Right – best show it some British winter then and see if there is a place in the world for just such a car. On first impressions it’s a threedoor Evoque with no roof. But actually it’s worse than that. While the normal Evoque is a very handsome craft, backed up with record sales figures, I just can’t bring myself to say I find the Convertible attractive. It’s better with the roof down, no
question, but with the roof up? That’s the risk in turning a vehicle into a convertible rather than designing a topless vehicle from the outset. The first experience with the Evoque was in heavy rain – an ideal opportunity then to test whether soft-top Land Rovers have become any more waterproof over the decades. Range Rovers may come with a lot of fancy extras, but an in-built swimming pool is yet to be one you can voluntarily opt for on the accessories list. I’m happy to report I stepped out of the Evoque without having had to deploy armbands. On leaving the house the following morning and the first with the Convertible as my steed, a cold snap had taken hold of the UK and overnight the Range Rover had frozen over. Having watched as the Evoque automatically started to heat up every inch of its being without prompting, I edged out of the cul-de-sac with a measured steadiness as the Convertible took to the ice rink. I watched the outside temperature climb from a nippy 1°C to a toasty 3°C as I joined the queue of traffic leaving my estate at 7.30am. The sky was a fresh, cool blue and, as we were approaching the end of February, headlights were no longer required at this point (not that this is something you have to manually operate in the Convertible in any case). And, slowly crawling at 5mph behind some boggo estate and in front of a red Chevy Spark, that’s when it hit me. The idea, not the Spark. It’s a

glorious morning – and I’m driving a convertible Range Rover. I slid open the centre storage compartment where the cup holders are located and primed my finger, fully knowing I was about to embrace the inner knob inside me and become ‘that guy’ in front of all the salesmen, builders and mums quietly unaware of the show literally about to unfold before their eyes. Switch engaged, the whirr of the electric motors started to hum and, after a brief pause, the roof lifted off the Evoque. I sat there as the performance went on around me, like being on a stage itself as ballerinas dance around me. I felt like the woman behind me was also enjoying the performance, but later couldn’t decide whether she’d been laughing with me or at me. In all the modern Land Rovers I’ve driven around in, including the SVR, I’ve never had so many looks in one
journey. Dare I say, I even started to develop a, albeit small, soft spot for the Evoque Convertible. Now, before you sharpen the pitchforks and start meeting in back alleys in a secret society set to torch me for my sins to Green Ovalism, please let me explain. Everyone has a right to a fair trail, correct? Your editor has not taken leave of his senses, despite how it may seem. I do not now favour the Kensington Evoque over the Keswick Series III. I do not want to start subscribing to British GQ magazine and have debates with my chums on which brogues will best suit my merlot-tinted slim-fit chinos this season. No, I am merely pointing out what benefit the Evoque Convertible has over a regular hard-headed Evoque. The regular Evoque is better looking – and whether you agree with the philosophy or not, it is a great on-road drive. Tak-

This Evoque carries the MY17 infotainment updates, including the new 10” touchscreen. Much better, JLR ing the wheel of an ordinary Evoque, you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’re driving something of shorter stance and holding a much lower centre of gravity. It holds a corner admirably with grip and poise, putting more vehicles with lesser dimensions to shame than it has a right to, especially when riding with the Dynamic package. Naturally, if you treat cars like a square and remove/soften one of its four sides, it won’t be as rigid. And that’s what you can feel when you turn the Evoque Convertible into the same bend as the regular Evoque. I just don’t have the same confidence when tucking the ‘Kensington’ into the same twists I’ve enjoyed in a hard-top Evoque. The fact is that the Convertible is slower both in a straight line and in the bends, it’s less economical, not as pretty, not as practical and less refined. And more expensive. However, there are some reasons why I did warm to the soft-top
Evoque. For starters, because you can only spec it in HSE Dynamic or HSE Dynamic Lux derivatives, it’s very well equipped, comes with the 180hp TD4 Ingenium power unit, the nine-speed ZF auto transmission and makes for a very compliant cruiser. The Convertible encourages you to take a step back in life and reflect on your surroundings – it’s a very relaxing car to own; something that occurred to me when I realised I never once slipped the ‘Conv’ into its Sport mode. And when the sky is blue, regardless of what the temperature is outside, you can expose yourself to the natural world, listening to the rustling of leaves on trees or the tweets of feathered friends as they fly overhead. And thank you Land Rover for the industrial-powered seat heaters, which are crucial for when the roof is down in Britain’s winter. One standout memory of my time with the ‘Kensington’ is on that cold
Tuesday morning when I enjoyed the topless experience (of the car). My route to work sees me pass through some narrow lanes and one often floods during the winter. Many cars stayed away that day and sought the usual diversion, but I pushed through with the confidence of a duck. Shortly after that I realised that’s what separates the Evoque Convertible from other vehicles. Yes, other 4x4s came through that section and I saw other convertibles on the road that day. But I’m willing to bet I was the only convertible fording my way to work that morning. If you like open-top thrills and need a Green Oval at the front of your vehicle, buy a soft-top Series III. If you want the same, but a modern-day equivalent, the Evoque Convertible is your ticket. And remember: just because something may appear to be unusual, unconventional or different, it doesn’t mean to say that it is wrong.

take you far away from the stresses of the world. I mean, just look at what Kevin Bartlett did. Clearly he knew he could come put 2+2 together and get a 10/10 vacation. Firstly, though, he had to decide exactly where to travel and how to go about it. ‘The reason I picked Go-Exploring was that I fancied an off-road trip somewhere I hadn’t been before,’ explains Kevin. Easier said than done with some of you serial overlanders out there, but Portugal was still an unticked box on Kevin’s bucket list. Plus, as Kevin rightly says, ‘There was a good chance the weather would be better than in the UK!’ Kevin and his friend, Rob happened to meet Joe, who runs Go-Exploring, while perusing stalls at the Adventure Overland Show, held on the Stratford Racecourse grounds in Warwickshire. It was here the seed would be sown as they discussed with Joe the possibility
of a tour. Clearly Joe was able to put together an attractive package for the pair, including meals and a place to camp (customers have the option to camp or stay in the guesthouse at the base in Portugal) as they were soon booked on for their tour of Portugal. So, now the adventure was set, thoughts turned towards their method of transportation. ‘I have done various overland trips before, but mainly on two wheels travelling throughout Europe and Morocco,’ says Kevin. ‘At the time of this tour, I had a Land Rover 90 Td5 XS and my travelling companion had a Hard Top 90 300Tdi that he had built himself.’ The boys were well catered for in terms of their machinery then. The duo embarked on their tour at the end of April in 2015 stretching into the beginning of May. Naturally, perfect weather had been arranged for their arrival. ‘I guess the aspect of the tour that

‘What stood out most for me was the off-roading – there was always something different waiting around the corner’
stood out the most for me was the off-roading,’ claims Kevin. ‘The countryside is so diverse in that part of Portugal that there was always something different waiting around the corner of every hillside. Joe and Peter have a very good knowledge of the area and we were taken to places we would have never found on our own.’ Go-Exploring run their tours from the southern region of Portugal, operating around the Monchique area. Of course, how you choose to get there is completely up to you! A popular route to take is by replicating the journey Kevin made with Rob. ‘We cruised down to Santander from Plymouth by ferry, leaving at 4.30pm on the Sunday and landing on the Monday at midday,’ recalls Kevin. ‘We travelled across Spain making just the one overnight stop at a campsite south of Salamanca – which we used on the way back as well.’ The pair set off for the Portuguese border the following morning, steadily heading down towards Monchique where Joe rendezvoused with Kevin and Rob at the base where they would
be staying for the next week or so. ‘On arriving we were greeted by Freyer and Luka – and their dogs – who own the guesthouse and made us feel very welcome. We stayed at the campsite, but ate our meals up at the house, sampling Luka’s fantastic cooking, whether it be at breakfast, lunch or dinner! ‘I must say again that Joe and Peter are a great team,’ continues Kevin. ‘Not only did they show us off-road trails that would have eluded me and Rob if we’d been by ourselves, but they also gave us the confidence to tackle terrain we could have only dreamt of challenging. We certainly learnt a lot about our vehicles’ capabilities, and our own.’ You could pop into Thomas Cook and grab yourself a standard seven-night stint in some mediocre resort where you’ll lie there on some godforsaken beach wondering when your flight home is. But why settle for Benidorm when you can have Monchique? Don’t settle for less, pick the chic option and choose Go-Exploring.

A
rmed with more knowledge on the animal kingdom than David Attenborough himself – courtesy of their spell in the Galapagos – Jenny, Gavin and her ladyship, Ruby The Landy, have successfully explored Columbia and Ecuador, breathing in the diverse wildlife, cultures and scenery on tap. But now, attention turns to Peru. This was to be more of a flying visit than the previous two countries visited, crossing the border into yet another Hispanophone province, which makes you wonder why Ruby hadn’t started requesting to be fed on a diet of paella and sangria, rather than diesel and Ravenol. Time flies when you’re having fun, and so does a happy little Land Rover when she’s travelling the world. Ruby and her occupants ‘touched down’ in Peru on 6 September and there was a lot to squeeze in before reaching Bolivia on 3 October. So, what sights can one expect to see in Peru? ‘Our top place was the Cordillera Blanca Mountains and the wonderful Laguna Parón, the largest lake in this mountain range,’ says Jen. ‘We had a spectacular drive to reach Laguna Parón, with the dirt road leading to it consisting of multiple hairpin turns, heading through an enormous canyon with 1000m-high granite walls. ‘The Laguna sits 4200m high and was simply breathtaking. The colour of the water was a turquoise blue and the surrounding mountains were like something out of a film. In fact, one of the mountains, Artesonraju, is the very mountain depicted in the Paramount Pictures logo!’ An ideal spot for a bit of wild camping then! Your Land Rover, best friend and one of the world’s most almighty backdrops all rolled into one – surely that’s what overlanding is about. While naturally you’re going to take away many happy memories from
such an experience, there were other destinations in Peru that an overlander must see. Again, many places offer scenic settings that could fill an art gallery in a heartbeat, including the Paracas National Reserve. Encapsulating a vast coastal desert, with shades of sand capable of putting a Crayola pack to shame, this beautiful expanse is a rugged environment and a brilliant place to play in a Defender. Gav says, ‘We had a great time driving all over the desert, which stretched as far as the eye could see and we set up our wild camp overlooking a red sandy beach with crashing waves.’ The couple left Ruby briefly to catch a boat and a two-hour tour of the Islas Ballestas. They witnessed the largescale geoglyph that lies in the sand at Candelabra before observing more wildlife, with the Islas Ballestas home
to pelicans, sea lions and Peruvian boobies - no wonder Gav was keen on the excursion. One attraction that proved a little less perky was when Jen and Gav visited the Chauchilla Cemetery, near the city of Nazca. ‘Chauchilla Cemetery is an eerily compelling place,’ says Jen, ‘notable for its open-pit graves where the bodies of the dead still sit where they were positioned centuries ago. Some remain complete skeletons, wrapped in shrouds, and all the skulls face east as Nazca tradition dictates. ‘It was a fascinating, if not slightly macabre place to set up camp, although we got an excellent night’s sleep because there was no one to disturb us, only the mummies in their graves nearby!’ The trio also explored the Rainbow

There was even a chance for some off-roading as they climbed the mountain range before the following day’s hike through snow-capped peaks and herds of alpacas. It all sounds like a fabulous tour of Peru, except, wait, isn’t the Machu Picchu in Peru? Well, yes, it is. And obviously this would have been high on Jen, Gav and Ruby’s priority list. Unfortunately, strikes on the roads put paid to that adventure! After spending four weeks in Peru, then, how did Jen and Gav reflect on this country compared to Colombia and Ecuador? ‘To be honest, we preferred the previous countries,’ explains Gav. ‘The North of Peru was a vast expanse of desert and there was a lot of rubbish around. It also felt less welcoming and friendly than Colombia, although that was only our perception and the people were still great. It also felt like there was a lot more history in Peru with all of the Inca and pre-Inca sites.’ As Ruby and her pals headed in Bolivia, now with a good few months of travelling under their belt, Jen and Gav had realised that trying to see everything isn’t the best way to go about planning your time. Pick out your top priorities, slow down a touch and enjoy the experience. ‘We were happy to have a four-wheel drive vehicle but one that was a bit smaller than some of the huge trucks we had been seeing, as it meant we could access the narrower, winding mountain roads,’ says Jen. ‘I think the only change we would make at this point would be to have the option of sleeping inside Ruby on occasions, as it restricted us in cities to having to find hostels or campgrounds on the outside of the city. Plus, if the weather was bad we could not live or sleep inside, so have had to call upon the awning on occasion.’ There may be the odd turbulence on any overland trip, but this is a trio capable of riding out any storm. Onwards to Bolivia!

It may seem elementary, but checking your Land Rover and getting it ready for an MOT could save you having to pay the labour costs for any problems that may occur. So what exactly do you look for?
h yes, it’s coming round to that time of year again, you know, where you need to get the Landy MOT’d and roadworthy for another 12 months. Trouble is that these old battered pieces of magic can be a bit, well, troublesome at times. They rust like it’s going out of fashion and that’s before you look at other components, like brakes, tyres and suspension. But rather than fear the onslaught of issues, perhaps there is a way to help keep costs down, by identifying and repairing some of the problems before it ever reaches the test centre – and before you have to fork out for additional labour costs too. A lot of it comes down to identifying issues yourself. And that’s where Dave comes in. Dave is one of the senior mechanics at Astwood 4x4, and he’s about to prep a Discovery 2 Td5 for its MOT and
1. Rust, rust, horrendous rust. Actually, this isn’t so bad. It’s all surface corrosion at the moment, admittedly getting a little flaky in areas, but you need to start being concerned – and practice your welding skills – when holes appear where they shouldn’t be. Dave assessed the chassis extensively and while it is good enough to pass on this occasion, some patchwork may be required next time out. Check chassis rails, crossmembers and the full extremities of the chassis. Naturally, the best way to solve these problems long-term... buy a galvanised chassis. It won’t be long before Discovery 2s start to become a heritage vehicle themselves, you know. Perhaps something worth looking into... 2. The main thing we’re interested in here is the trailing (pictured) and radius arms. Yes, you should be able to lever the arms and allow for some movement (laterally), but not to the point where anything is loose

In this brief guide, we’ll pick out a few areas on where to look for potential problems and where you may be able to replace components yourself in order to keep costs low. On this particular vehicle, the anti-roll bar links had failed and needed replacing, so we’ll show you how to change those too. Assess the tyre for any cuts or bulges, spinning the wheel while jacked up so that you should be able to feel a nice smooth rotation. If you don’t, a seized brake is likely to be the problem, as was the case on this Discovery. When rotating the tyre, there should be no lateral movement, hereby no play in the bearings

This is an area to keep an eye on, however. Naturally, debris from the road can gather in these locations and you’d be surprised how beneficial a jet washing can be for your Land Rover from time to time. In this instance, if the rust had gone clean through, then this could be dangerous as the spring could dislocate from the turret housing

Shine bright like a diamond Project Td5: So, here we are, the last addition to the Td5 90 – this month, we switch to LED headlights 1. First thing’s first: disconnect the battery. Then unscrew the plastic headlight surround and the side lights and indicators. You can leave these all resting where they hang as long as you have enough room to access the headlight behind. You then need to unscrew the headlight from where it is held, notably the 9 and 3 o’clock screws (there are two screws at 3 o’clock) 2. The headlight can then be removed from its holding, but slowly bring the light out as it will have wires connected at the rear. If you’re replacing the original lights, there should just be a three-pin connector at the back – disconnect it. If like us, you’re switching from aftermarket units – in this case Britpart’s 7” Crystal non-LED headlights – there will be another two separates wires providing a live and an earth for the side lights. These are two bullet-ended wires – again, disconnect. Once you have the headlight unit in your hands, you’ll notice a retaining ring around the edge. There are three screws and three brackets in total. Unscrew them all and keep them safe for when you apply the new headlight to the retaining ring 3. Now, if you are replacing original units, you need to run an additional live wire from the side light circuit through to be able to reach the new headlight. Because we were replacing aftermarket units, we already had two wires in place – the live wire (red) and return wire (black). With Ring’s new Truckmaster 7” LED headlight, there is an additional side light incorporated within the headlight cluster, hence the need for the extra live wire. The Ring headlight has a connector for the three-pin power plug, but also uses a spade end connector for the sidelight. Here we cut off the bullet end of the live wire before stripping back to expose fresh ends 4. Then put a new spade end on the end of the wire and crimp the ends to secure in place

5. Apply some regular insulation tape around the wire and spade end to help make sure nothing separates. Now, with our old return wire, owing to the fact that the new headlight earths itself through the three-pin connector, the black wire becomes surplus to requirements, so we just taped it up so that it doesn’t interfere with any working wires It’s a good idea at this point to quickly connect the new headlight, via the three-pin plug and new spade-ended live wire, and check whether your headlights are working. You should be able to select side lights, dipped and main beam

6. Providing all the electrics are working and you can see your new lights are working fine, you can now reassemble the new headlight into the retaining ring. There are tabs on the back of the headlight to show you where the screws and brackets should locate. Note that the headlight lense shows where the top should relate with the retention ring. Remember that the two 3 o’clock screws that hold the retaining ring with the headlight need to be, you guessed it, on the right

It can be a little fiddly, but providing you’ve lined the top up correctly and have the two screws on your right, you’ll be at the finish line. Then just rescrew in the indicators and stock side lights along with the plastic trim

emember when you were a teenager? Yes, we know, for some of you it may have been a while ago now, but try your best anyway. The point we’re getting at is that growing up, no one wants to be seen as a wuss, or a lightweight. But as the years go by, you realise that Lightweights aren’t such a bad thing. I’m talking, of course, about the Land Rover variant. So, should you get one? And if so, what are the differences between the Series IIA and III Lightweights? Here to talk us through the ins and outs of the Land Rover Half Ton is Andy Walker of Alex Engineering. ‘As far as I can see, buyers of Lightweights have all the same issues as buying a civilian Series IIA/III, plus a few more!’ says Andy. ‘The body panels for Lightweights have always been a little difficult to get
hold of, and by now most are suffering with bulkhead corrosion in some shape or form – the bulkhead top section being a favourite spot.’ Andy also notes that the radiator mount front panel is made from steel and catches the corrosion bug too. As far as differences go between the IIA and III LWTs, however, there is very little. Sure, as with the civvy Landies, the headlights are the give away as to what you’re looking at, but both used the likeable 2.25 petrol motor and the gearboxes were Series III units but for a steady bar mounted underneath and onto the chassis crossmember. There are differences to look out for between the civvy Landies and LWTs when it comes to axles, though. ‘The drive flanges and halfshafts are unique to the Lightweight – so don’t break them,’ warns Andy. The issue here is that halfshafts on Lightweights were designed to be shorter, hereby
allowing the vehicle to fit on a standard pallet while being transported via the air. ‘Oh and don’t forget you have a choice of 12v or 24v electrics too,’ continues Andy. ‘The 12v versions are relatively standard, while 24v derivatives can cause issues with the engine ignition system as the HT leads, plugs, coil and cap are extremely expensive to replace.’ Andy seems to recall the retail price from Land Rover of a 24v alternator being £4000... Naturally, any 24v ex-military vehicle will have the same problems. On the Lightweights, though, the chassis has a military rear crossmember and different front dumb irons where the bumper mounts. The Lightweight is the estranged cousin to the ‘regular’ civilian Land Rovers. Quirky it may be, but this is a fantastic Landy – and more exclusive.

Series I (1948-1958)
I
f you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go. The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike. Its 1940’s engineering gives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once
were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then a finished example will fetch mega bucks. Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished examples now retailing where they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game. The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets. But can you really put a price on such an icon?
Series II/IIA (1958-1971)
I
n 1958, the second-generation Land Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders. Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts. The prices are on the increase, however, as these 50-year-old vehicles start to come into their own as a collector’s
item. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2.0-litre diesel, were underpowered and noisy. The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of refinement over the Series I. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks.
Series III (1971-1985)
F
ollowing on from the Series IIA, the Series III emerged in 1971 with a few cosmetic tweaks to freshen up the model. Headlights were shifted out to the wings in-line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top of the bulkhead – not sure it’s a five stars on the Euro NCAP scale, though. The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar
to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout its production, although in 1980 the 2.25 motors switched to a more durable five bearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with. They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.
Lightweight (1968-1984)
P
ossibly the ugly duckling of the Series Land Rover family – but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t find much love for the Series Lightweights. These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance that does divide opinion on occasion. To mimic the civvy Series ma-
chines, the SIII LWT – built from 1972 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings. These Series Lightweights throw up an extra dimension to Land Rover ownership, with military history and touches often machine-gunning the vehicle. It means you get a Land Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd.
Forward Controls (1962-1978)
O
nly serious enthusiasts need continue reading here. Ownership of any Forward Control is not for the faint-hearted. These leviathans are expensive to run and trying to get hold of some of the parts can be, quite frankly, a bit of a nightmare! Clubs can help here, though, as is often the case with any Land Rover. These vehicles offer substantial
payloads if that’s the sort of thing you’re after, but will also tick the boxes for huge, unnecessary and hilariously addictive fun. If you’re going to go the whole hog then why not buy a 101FC. You’ll have a V8 engine harping away underneath you (literally) and people are likely to clear out of your way when they see you coming in their mirrors. Surely that’s reason enough to buy one?

Ninety/One Ten (1983-1990)
T
he icon of the 4x4 world. This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you just about anywhere in the world. Early examples of the Ninety and One Ten are worth keeping hold of, providing they’re in good condition – but you’ll be searching far and wide for examples that are. This was the birth of the Defender, despite not being christened officially
until 1990, and as such these Land Rovers had coil-sprung suspension, new engines – although they were still terribly underwhelming – and offroad capability that has still yet to be matched today. A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5TD version with low miles and good history. They’re robust and as simple as they come.
Defender 200Tdi (1990-1994)
I
n 1990, the Defender name emerged and with it a cementing of a legacy that already stretched back over 40 years. This was... is the best 4x4 by far. It carried the Tdi badge for the first time and meant that no longer was a Defender being powered by a feeble hamster in a wheel. If you’re in the market for a 200 Defender, though, you might get a 200 unit but it might not necessarily
be from a Defender. Replacing blown units with a Disco 200Tdi is popular, so check the arrangement of the turbo and manifold. The 200Tdi is probably the best for off-roaders, so many of these vehicles will have been worked hard. Some owners have now started restoring these vehicles, meaning a premium price – but can you really put a price on perfection...?
Defender 300Tdi (1994-1998)
A
fter the 200 followed the 300Tdi. Essentially, this was a revised version of the predecessor – perhaps a little more refined – but still with the same durability. These engines, providing they are properly maintained, can last for decades. Look around for one with full service history and you could find yourself a keeper. Some Tdi Defenders have received
galvanised chassis and even bulkheads, and these are the type of Defender you should be after. A futureproof Landy. By the time the 300Tdi came out, Land Rover was now giving the Defender power steering as standard and disc brakes all-round. It’s the little things after all. Arguably the company’s greatest engine, balancing performance and practicality. The Defender in its prime.
Defender Td5 (1998-2007)
F
ollowing on from the Tdi era, Land Rover issued the Defender with its Td5 engine from 1998 to 2007. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure that any mods have been done properly. Remaps, EGR valve deletes and uprated intercoolers are a few examples
of what many have been subject to. Lots of power doesn’t always mean happy faces. The rear of the chassis has frequently been called into question, so protect the rear crossmember if it’s in good shape, or else face the consequences. With minimal electrics, the Td5 Defender is still a DIY machine and you’ll be working on one of Land Rover’s most notable masterpieces.
Defender TDCi (2007-present)
T
he last of the Defenders were fitted with Ford Transit engines – first the 2.4 TDCi, followed by the 2.2 TDCi, brought in to meet Euro V emission standards and keep the Defender alive for another few years. Sadly, these engines denoted the Defender’s swansong, the twilight of its days. They were fitted with six-speed gearboxes, still had phenomenal offroad capability and even made the
Defender a nice place to be. But they were still very much Defenders. The era of blinging also began and you can find special editions out there costing obscene amounts of money. You will pay a premium for these Defenders, especially since the end of production. But if you can grab a 2.2 TDCi and start preserving it now, you may well never see depreciation. We’re no financial advisors, though...

Freelander 1 (1997-2006)
W
e haven’t always held the Freelander 1 in the highest regard here at The Landy, but as market prices constantly change, so too can our opinion on certain vehicles. With examples attainable from as little as £500, the Freelander 1 represents a cheap gateway into Landy ownership. There are a few issues to be aware of, though, such as the viscous coupling, which is expensive to replace and can
be upset by simply having mismatched tyres on your axles. The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures, but today’s replacements are much more robust. The V6 is thirsty and the 2.0Di is gutless, so opt for a TD4 – but check the condition of the injectors first. Buy an FL1 and you even get a Landy that’s decent off-road and doesn’t carry the usual trait of rusting after five minutes.
Freelander 2 (2006-2015)
M
ost people will turn their noses up at Freelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true Land Rovers. But while you should turn your nose up at the FL1, the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think. Because of it being replaced by the Discovery Sport, the FL2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels of refinement, a strong 2.2-litre
four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make for a great family vehicle. Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there. Prices are now falling thanks to the Freelander name disappearing from the production line, but for £10,000 you can now get a capable all-rounder that is actually pretty adept off-road and yet still economical to run.

Range Rover Classic (1970-1996)

he Range Rover Classic is one of those vehicles that you could theoretically still use everyday in the 21st Century. If you’re running a V8, however, that may not be such a wise idea. Classic Range Rovers still provide a relatively refined and great drive today, but they can be thirsty if you’re not in one of the various turbo-diesel examples. That said, if you own one and it’s
in good condition – look after it, as it will only appreciate. These vehicles are popular with collectors. Unfortunately, in terms of spare parts, many have succumb to corrosion or have been abused off-road to the point of no return. While an early ‘70s Classic may not be attainable for everyone, tidy examples of the late four-door versions can make for an equally tidy investment.
Range Rover P38A (1994-2002)
M
any people believe the P38A Range Rover to be a bit of a menace – and often it’s completely justified. Lights on the dashboard, air suspension failure, head gasket failure... the list can really continue. Still, it’s not all doom and gloom with the P38. In fact, if you find one in good working order, it’s sensational. Service history is a must, and if you’re going to own one then some
diagnostic equipment is going to be a better companion than a spanner. Avoid the diesel variant as the engine was adopted from a BMW saloon and isn’t up to the task of the extra weight a Range Rover carries. Go for a 4.6 HSE, it’s actually more economical than the 4.0 V8 and you’ll get all the toys (working or not). Or you could try and find an anniversary model or even a Holland & Holland...
Range Rover L322 (2002-2012)
C
ompared to the P38, the L322 Range Rover was a saint. Generally. Its electronic aids were far less temperamental and it delivered a new level of luxury to four-wheeled motoring. The Td6 receives mixed reviews: some say it’s underpowered while others say it’s the best of the bunch. Common sense would steer you towards a TDV8, either the 3.6 or 4.4, but these are the L322s holding out
for strong money. Notably, the petrol V8s are lingering with very appealing price tags, but don’t think running one would be cheap. As with many 21st Century Land Rovers, they have lost their accessability for the home mechanic. Drivetrain faults are becoming more frequent, so you need to look for that FSH. As a car, however, it’s probably all the car you’ll ever need.
Range Rover L405 (2012-present)
I
f you want the very best in automotive luxury, then look no further. The latest incarnation of Land Rover’s flagship Range Rover weighs a whopping 400kg less than its predecessor thanks to the use of an aluminium body, which helps on mpg – although owning one of these suggests that your cash flow isn’t particularly an issue. This is the last word in elegance and majestic motoring. All the engines
supply copious amounts of power to your right foot, while the L405 hasn’t lost any of its off-road pedigree... even if taking one off-road is like asking your alcoholic friend to a wine-testing session. They could comfortably partake, but probably shouldn’t. Prices are still only right for Premier League footballers and people with a link to the royal family. If you fit into that category, then we envy you.
RR Sport 1 (2005-2013)
M
uch of the Range Rover Sport was borrowed from the Disco 3, in fact it shared virtually identical underpinnings, whereas today’s RR Sport uses actual Range Rover foundations. Nevertheless, Land Rover put a Range Rover in a tracksuit and attempted to make a handler out of it. To some extent they succeeded, although it’s no sports car despite what it says on the back of the vehicle.
It can play the leisure vehicle very well, though, and will go off-road like the best of them. If you’re going to buy one, then you need to love it for itself, becausse a Discovery of the same era is more practical, while a full-fat Range Rover is always going to carry an extra layer of prestige. They’re still a good all-rounder, though, and now relatively affordable.

he second-generation Range Rover Sport has also been on a diet to save over 400kg, just like the daddy Range Rover. That means that even this big bruiser is relatively economical when spec’d with the SDV6 motor. Some won’t like the vulgar and flamboyant posture, while others will adhere to the smart, yet mean styling. But no one can knock the Sport for its
performance. It feels incredibly light for such a big car, and if you’ve robbed a bank and can afford the SVR version, it’s as good round a race track as it is on a green lane. The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Removing limbs is possibly the most feasible option, or wait ten years and see if the prices have come tumbling down off those high pedestals.

RR Evoque (2011-present)
W
hen the Range Rover Evoque was launched, it signalled Jaguar Land Rover’s intent on hitting the mass market. And given that the Evoque is their fastest-selling vehicle to-date, they’ve clearly done the job. That doesn’t mean it’s a hit with purists. They don’t much like the fact Victoria Beckham was involved in the designing of it, nor that it is the polar opposite to a Defender.

It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac, but it would rather not go down that route. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and because there are so many out there, they have decent residuals. Go for a five-door with the new Ingenium engine, and make it the 4WD version. The 2WD model may be eco-friendly but what is a Range Rover without four-wheel drive?

Discovery 1 (1989-1998)
T
he earliest version of the Discovery was aimed purely at providing a middle ground between the agricultural Defender and the luxury, upper-class Range Rover. It carried much of the Defender’s capabilities, but added more refinement and a driving experience more suitable to families – but without a Range Rover price tag. Blessed with the same wonderful
Tdi engines, the Discovery saved Land Rover and hit back at offerings from other nations by being an affordable all-rounder. And that still holds true even today. Early Discovery 1s in fine condition are now classics and will continue to appreciate. We would recommend trying to find a tidy and later 300Tdi example, but watch out for body rust – the boot floor, arches and wings etc.
Discovery 2 (1998-2004)
F
ollowing on from the first-generation Discovery, in 1998 Land Rover gave its family SUV some minor cosmetic tweaks and a whole new power unit in the shape of the Td5. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure any mods have been done properly. You can also buy a V8, but
the fuel bill isn’t going to be welcome, plus they’re more temporamental. Unlike on the D1, its the chassis that’s the problem, not the body. We all know that Discos make for a great tow car, and consequently many of the rear chassis on D2s have dipped their rears into the sea. Not all of them live to tell the tale... Get a later example for more creature comforts and difflocks too.
Discovery 3/4 (2004-present)
T
he Discovery went through a dramatic revamp for its launch in 2004, but it came out the other side as one hell of a vehicle. Greatly improved in terms of power and refinement, the Disco 3 received the relatively economical 2.7 TDV6 engine (although the thirsty 4.4 V8 petrol was an option) and became the first Land Rover to be given Terrain Response. If you need one vehicle in
your life, this could be the one that ticks the most boxes at once. Be weary of maintenance costs, especially as you approach the 105,000mile/seven-year mark that means the timing belt is due – it’s a body-off job! The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines are even better, with monumental amounts of torque. Luxury has also increased significantly in later examples. A later SDV6 model is best.
Discovery 5 (2017-present)
L
aunched just a couple of months ago, this latest Discovery is still yet to hit the UK roads on mass. Land Rover needed to improve economy in particular with this edition of the Disco, and having chopped 480kg from the kerbweight, it would seem their proficiency in the use of lightweight technologies is only getting better and better. We’ve yet to drive the latest Discov-
ery, but expectations are high – especially as this will be Land Rover’s most capable SUV in production. New engines look promising on paper, and Land Rover has listened to customers regarding the infotainment system. It will remain to be seen whether the changes have quenched the thirst of the critics, though. We reckon the base Sd4 model could turn out to provide all you really need.
Discovery Sport (2015-present)
B
rought in to replace the Freelander 2, the Discovery Sport was the vehicle that turned the Discovery brand into a family. It has come to be so much more than a re-badged Freelander, though. For starters, the Discovery Sport has seven seats (just), drives better than a Freelander 2 and is now more refined thanks to the Ingenium Td4 engine. Land Rover is now churning out
substantial units of the baby Disco, now even matching the Evoque for pace as one of the fastest-selling vehicles they make. It’s a more usable vehicle than the Evoque, though, and carries less of the feministic stigma that often surrounds the Evoque. Grab a cleverly-spec’d SE Tech for a car that can be as practical as a daddy Disco, but for a more attractive price.

ince the arrival of the Jeep Wrangler JK in 2006, enthusiasts in Britain have wished the factory would combine the 2.8 CRD diesel engine with the Rubicon off-road spec package. It now does – but while there’s no apparent engineering barrier to doing so in right-hand drive, the company has confirmed that a Rubicon diesel won’t be available in the UK. The latest example of a diesel Rubicon to be shown in public appeared on the Jeep stand at Geneva in March, in the shape of a new special-edition version of the vehicle. Named the Recon, this gains a stronger front axle and
heavy-duty cast diff covers, adding yet more resilience to what is already a uniquely capable off-road vehicle. Further enhancements include a vented Power Dome bonnet, beneath which buyers on what we can still just about call mainland Europe will have a choice between the 2.8 CRD and 284bhp, 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 petrol engines. Here in Britain, only the latter will be available, mated to a five-speed auto gearbox as standard. Sales of the Rubicon Recon are now being rolled out across Jeep’s European markets. Prices are yet to be announced, however Jeep says it will be available in a wide range of paint colours.
Mini’s Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 hybrid will cost from £31,585 (before the government’s plug-in car grant) when it hits the road on 24 June. The 224bhp petrol-electric SUV claims 134.5mpg, 49g/km and a zero-emissions range of up to 25 miles.

The vehicle’s purpose was to demonstrate Mopar’s ONE off-road accessory pack. Featuring a 2” suspension lift, steering damper and 265/75R17 Hankook all-terrains on cast alloy rims, this kit is now available through Jeep’s dealer network for 2-door and 4-door Rubicon models – even though in the UK, the vehicle itself is not.

vehi Simply getting hold of vehicles has long been a problem own for would-be Wrangler owners in the UK – and with the demise of the Land Rover Defender, there are more of them than ever. Jeep has admitted that supply here needs to improve – and the company’s boss Michael Manly recently confirmed next-gen that ahead of the next-generation JL model starting production this autumn, the factory is gearing up for a near-100% rise in output. The JL will come to the UK in 2018, with a double-cab pick-up version due to follow a year later. Specific model plans here remain unknown, however the US market is getting its first ever diesel – prompting optimism that when it comes here, the new Wrangler will at last be available with the right engine in Rubicon form. Wran Prices for the new Wrangler are a long way from being finalised, however with better supply it is to be hoped that they will be more realistic than at present. The cheapest Wrangler currently costs £33,925 – almost double what it did when the current model was launched ten years ago.

Medium-sized seven-seat SUV promises modern tech and real off-road ability SSANGYONG’S OFF-ROAD HERITAGE continues to be writ large in its latest concept vehicle, the XAVL. A seven-seater based on 2015’s XAV concept, this will go into production in the near future. Sitting between the current Korando and soon-to-be-replaced Rexton, Ssangyong says the XAVL will be ‘an authentic off-road SUV’. It will be available in 1.5-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel forms, each with a choice of transmissions. Inside, the vehicle promises a wide range of high-tech features. Major functions can be controlled remotely via a smartphone app, the passenger seats have a wi-fi hotspot and Link to Home technology allows you to warm up the oven, operate the central heating and so on from in the cabin. Outside, the XAVL has a ‘tough, masculine exterior’. In the words
of Ssangyong boss Johng-sik Choi, it ‘takes its design inspiration from our iconic Korando model of the

Ssangyong has also revised its current Korando, with a new-look front end and a tough interior which can ‘handle the rough and tumble of family life.’ The vehicle now features LED running lights, 18” diamond-turned alloys and a more comfortable steering wheel. Options include a choice of 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines and manual and auto gearboxes. Four-wheel drive is on offer, as are several other safety features. These updates will see the Korando through to the end of production; Ssangyong’s smallest SUV is due to be replaced two years from now.

Audi’s SQ7 is famous for the electrically powered 48-volt compressor allowing its 4.0 TDI engine to deliver 435bhp and 664lbf.ft from just 1000rpm. But the system also has a future in the company’s petrol-engined products – the first of which is the Q8 Sport Concept. A four-seat coupe-SUV, this features a 3.0 TFSI petrol engine with the 48v changer in a mild hybrid system developing 470bhp and 516lbf.ft. As well as allowing a 4.7-seconds 0-62 time, Audi says this drivetrain gives the Q8 a range of more than 745 miles. Audi says the TFSI-based hybrid system will be used on a wide range of its models in the future. The Q8, meanwhile, is strongly tipped to spawn a production model which will go on sale around a year from now.
Peugeot’s second-generation 3008 has been named Car of the Year 2017. The new SUV has already been ordered by almost 100,000 customers across Europe – however only a few choose the Hybrid4 model, which is the sole version with all-wheel drive.

DA6601 Right hand drive X-Defend Pedal Lock DA6602 Left hand drive Defender - up to Td5 without air-con The X-Defend Pedal Lock prevents the clutch, brake and throttle pedal from being operated, making a vehicle almost impossible to drive! Unlike other pedal locks, this remains bolted to the floor of the vehicle. When not in use, it folds flat on the floor and seat box, forming the floor of the cab. In this position it can be covered with your usual floor mat. This means you don’t have to store a 20kg lump of metal which could be lethal if it hit you in the event of an accident or while off-roading. It also means that locking is incredibly quick. Just release the catch which holds it against the seat box and lock into position. A 10mm thick steel claw grabs the brake pedal shaft and ratchets in tight against it. It can be locked in a couple of seconds! To unlock turn the key which releases the pedal and fold flat on the floor. The Pedal Lock is supplied in tough, corrosion proof 304 stainless steel and uses formed hinges with a 6mm stainless pin. It is supplied with an anti-drill, British made Lowe & Fletcher RPT Lock. Notes - This does NOT fit Series/Defender - 2007 onwards. As not all Defenders are the same and build tolerances are at best acceptable it may be necessary to either relocate the bonnet pull bracket (you can drill out the spot welds and re-attach with pop rivets) or better still replace with the later Td5 type bonnet pull (FSC000050PMA). We have discovered that because Land Rover had no set place to fit the early type bracket it sometimes fouls the pedal lock.
