Collective Works As expected, Land Rover classics are playing a pivotal role in the celebrations for Land Rover’s 70th Anniversary. In the eyes of many Landy lovers, it will be hard for them to top this limited edition V8 Defender

hen you reach a milestone birthday, you often do daft things. People might opt for a skydive on their fiftieth or get a tattoo for their thirtieth, and most of us drank enough to kill us on our eighteenth. In some cases, you celebrate the special event over the course of a weekend; in others, you might even stretch it out to a full week. Or if you’re Land Rover, you embark on a full year of celebration. The company kicked off its 70th anniversary year by announcing that its Land Rover Classics department is working on the restoration of a pre-production prototype Series I – which you can read about elsewhere in this issue of 4x4. That vehicle will of course not be for sale – however the new Defender will be.

No, it’s not the new Defender. That’s still due next year. What we have instead is the Defender Works V8. This 70th anniversary edition is being offered in a limited run of 150 examples, made up of 90s and 110s. It’s presented as a vehicle which ‘pays homage to the early high-powered engines in both the Series III Stage 1 V8 from 1979 and subsequent Defenders including the 50th Anniversary Edition, which are highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors today.’ Well, yes, the Stage 1 was high-powered, at least compared to the 2.25-litre four-pot you’d have got if you availed yourself of an everyday Series III at the time. Not as powerful as this new one, though. A naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 sees to that, with its 405bhp, 379lbf.ft output giving the vehicle a 0-62mph time of 5.6 seconds. Top speed, meanwhile, is 106mph. Love those aerodynamics…

Thus equipped, this is the fastest and most powerful Defender ever created by Land Rover. It ought to be the most refined, too, as the engine is mated to an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. This has a sport mode position on the shifter; it’s also bolted to the familiar two-speed transfer case, and we’ll leave it to you to decide which is likely to see more action. Further mods to what was factory spec when the Defender was still new include uprated springs, shocks and anti-roll bars for better handling on the road, as well as more powerful four-pot brakes and 265/65R18 BFGoodrich All-Terrains on 18” diamond-turned Sawtooth alloys. With its handling-biased suspension and, for a Defender, low-profile tyres, the Works V8 is aimed at buyers who won’t use it off-road. Indeed, Land Rover is upfront about it being for collectors. And the modifications made to

its body and cabin bear this out, with Windsor leather covering the dash, door panels, headlining and Recaro seats. Land Rover’s own Classic media system also features here, and on the outside the door handles, fuel cap and bonnet lettering are all made from machine-finished aluminium. ‘It’s fitting that we’ve been able to release the full potential of the iconic Defender, whose much-loved shape remains synonymous with Land Rover, 70 years since it was seen in public for the first time,’ says JLR Classic boss Tim Hannig. ‘The idea of reintroducing a V8 Defender was something we were discussing as far back as 2014, when we were still building the Defender in Solihull. We knew the demand was there for a powerful and fast Defender; the Land Rover authenticity is the ultimate finishing touch for discerning clients purchasing these collector’s edition Defenders.’

The vehicle’s overall spec may put you in mind of models offered by higher-end aftermarket builders in the bespoke vehicle sector. Land Rover has said in the past that it intends to put these companies out of business – and the Works V8 can be seen as a salvo in that war. It will be available exclusively from Land Rover Classic – however with UK prices starting at £150,000 for a 90, it will only be for the very richest Solihull fans. If that comes at you as the inevitable bucket of cold water, you might be cheered back up by the news that Land Rover Classic is also getting set to offer a range of fast-road suspension kits, brake upgrades and power enhancements for the TDCi engine, all of them inspired by the Works V8. Prices for these will be announced further down the line – and all the while, Land Rover’s 70th birthday celebrations will be continuing in full swing.

Happy Anniversary T

Words: George Dove

his year, Land Rover will be seventy years old. And to kick off a year of jubilee celebrations, the company’s Classics department has started work on an in-house restoration which will yield one of the rarest and most precious vehicles ever to wear its badge. This is a pre-production 80” Series I prototype – one of the three vehicles which were displayed to the world as Rover launched the original Land-Rover at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1948. Its location was unknown for the last 63 years – but having recently been unearthed, it has been repatriated in readiness for a return to its former glories. The vehicle was last known to be on the road in the Sixties, following which it spent twenty years in a Welsh field. After this, it lay as unfinished in a garden as a ‘restoration project’ – the kind that spends year after year without anyone getting round to starting on it. This was a mere few miles from Solihull. Further to its discovery, however, the team at Jaguar Land Rover Classics

researched its lineage and past ownership in order to solidify its derivation. The team behind the Series I Reborn programme – the Land Rover curriculum that gives new life to the original classics – will be taking the lead with the prototype, and over the next year they will preserve the historical Landy and bring it back to life. In the words of JLR Classic Director Tim Hannig: ‘There is something charming about the fact that exactly seventy years ago, this vehicle would have been undergoing its final adjustments before being prepared for the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show launch – where the world first saw the shape that’s now immediately recognised as a Land Rover.’ Compared to the first production Land Rovers, this vehicle, like all 48 pre-production examples, had a thicker aluminium body, a galvanised chassis and a removable rear tub. The Classic team at JLR will pay rigorous attention to the details in the revival, and will refresh the light green paintwork applied seven decades ago while protecting the patina of the original components.

‘This Land Rover is an irreplaceable piece of world automotive history and is as historically important as “Huey”, the first pre-production Land Rover,’ adds Hannig. ‘Beginning its sympathetic restoration here at Classic Works, where we can ensure it’s put back together as precisely as it’s meant to be, is a fitting way to start Land Rover’s 70th anniversary year.’

A Legend in the making Seventy years after the birth of the first Land Rover, an all-new event held at the Bicester Heritage site will celebrate the life so far of the badge we all know and love. Taking place over the weekend of 26 and 27 May, Land Rover Legends will pull together the vehicles, people and stories that built up the empire of the Green Oval. The aim of the show is to tell the tale with authenticity, and will feature vehicles ranging from mint examples, to military specials and

concepts that have been pivotal in the Land Rover history – along with experts involved in designing and engineering the magnificent machines. Set in the aptly authentic restored WW2 Bomber Station and airfield, the setting is one that mirrors the vehicles of the show. With guests and Land Rover clubs invited to display their own vehicles too, it is an event that will catch the eye of many connoisseurs, collectors and owners of Landies. bicesterheritage.co.uk

Can I have a word...

W

ell, well, well. If it isn’t the return of the Defender. Welcome back, old friend... and that’s just the point. The news that has reverberated around the Land Rover community over the last couple of weeks is all about a new Defender. But it is not the new Defender we’re all waiting for. You still with me? What Land Rover launched a couple of weeks ago is a new old Defender. This is the result of many hard hours beavering away in the Jaguar Land Rover Classic division. So, the new Defender is still a secret – but what of this piece of Works... As fetching as it is (I love red) and as brilliant a driving experience it will be (I love V8s), this is just another way for Land Rover to appease a handful of people with incredibly well-endowed bank accounts. 150 of these Defenders will be made, and they will all cost £150,000. Each. Perhaps, admittedly, there is an element of jealousy on my part that I will never probably even drive one of these machines, yet alone own one. But the bigger issue is that I would be willing to wager the entirety of my comparatively measly bank balance on the fact very few of these vehicles will be used properly. I can’t help but feel like they’ll just be mollycoddled; cooped up in heated garages, Sunday will be the only day they know and the sun will be the only thing they ever see in the sky. Fair play to Land Rover, the demand is there and they’ve probably sold every single one of them even as I write this. But quite simply, they don’t make them like they used to. O

ne of Britain’s most respected and longest-running 4x4 specialists has been honoured in Workshop Magazine’s Independent Garage awards. At a ceremony in London just before Christmas, Gumtree 4x4 Ltd of Ditchling, Sussex was Highly Commended in the Specialist Garage of the Year category, sponsored by Autologic – recognising the reputation for workmanship and service the company has built up over more than three and a half decades in business. Managing Director John Bowden started the company 37 years ago, naming it Gumtree Enterprises as he

had just been made redundant while his wife was expecting their first baby. ‘I was doing anything and everything to earn a couple of bob,’ he says. ‘I was literally up a gum tree!’ Transport and recovery work was a big part of the company’s income at that point, and John also started breaking old Land Rovers for spares. His first ever victim was a Series IIA 2.25 diesel which had been used as a lime spreader: ‘Nowadays,’ he reflects, ‘the PTO and hydraulics would be collectors’ items!’ The first company vehicle was a 1971 Range Rover, which John says was rusty even in 1980 as it had been used to launch power boats. Next came a Ford D Series crew cab, which John converted into a sleeper before using it to transport cars, plant machinery and general goods all over Europe. Next came a Land Rover Series III 1-ton, a vehicle which is now a big-time rarity. John fitted it with a 3.0-litre Rover six-pot engine and a standard gearbox to give it some top speed, and used it for all kinds of recovery and transport work… until its chassis rotted away. Recovery continues to be part of what the company does even today, but nowadays it’s known primarily for being an independent 4x4 and Land Rover specialist. ’This award shows how well our small team of Land Rover specialists look after our many and varied customers,’ says John. We deal with every Land Rover product, from nearly new Range Rovers to classic Series Is, carrying out basic services and major rebuilds and keeping our customers informed and advised as

necessary.’ These customers have included owners of tired first-generation Range Rovers who, rather than buying a newer model, have instead spent the money on bringing their existing one back to its best. Seeing the revival of long-term projects such as this is the perfect reward for a technician’s skill and dedication – though the Gumtree team are equally happy keeping newer Land Rovers in tip-top shape, or trying to stave off the inevitable for customers with troublesome Mk1 Freelanders and so on. A feature of the Gumtree team is that many of them are enthusiasts themselves. Long-time workshop foreman Martin Stapleton used to be a well-known face on the comp safari circuit, and several of his colleagues past and present have built hybrids or restored old Land Rovers in their spare time. Many have been RTV trial regulars, too, as was John himself in the years before the company was started – when he was one of the earliest members of the fledgling All Wheel Drive Club. More recently, John has become the driving force behind Rhino Ark in the UK, whose charity off-road events help raise money to protect vulnerable wildlife in Kenya. And the day-to-day business of keeping Land Rovers healthy in and around Sussex keeps him as busy as ever. ‘I would like to pay tribute to the hard work which all my staff have put in,’ he says. ‘I feel that this is very much their award.’ If you’ve ever been a Gumtree customer, you’ll know how much they deserve it – and that so does John himself.

Repairs planned on major Lakes byway

O

ne of the Lake District’s most popular rights of way is set to be closed to four-wheeled vehicles while repair work takes place during the next couple of months. The lane, which in the absence of a proper name is known mainly just as Mountain Road, runs from the A593 a few miles south of Skelwith Bridge to the hamlet of Knipe Fold, just north of Hawkshead, and is expected to be restricted for around three weeks at some point before the end of March. The right of way, which is known for its magnificent forested mountain views, is extremely popular with all kinds of users and has traditionally been one of the better-surfaced lanes in the area. Several hard winters have created a number of awkward rocky sections, however, and the Lake District National Park Authority intends to

resurface its southern end with stone pitching to remedy this. The temporary closure will apply only to four-wheeled vehicles, as the LDNPA believes the route will remain passable to other users (including

those on motorbikes) during the course of the works. The authority will make a six-month closure order to facilitate this, however it says this will only be enforced while the works are actually in place.

Essex CC reaches out to lane users

Temporary closure on Pye Corner in Powys The Pye Corner byway in Powys is to be closed temporarily this spring while work is done to fill in a couple of deep holes towards its eastern end. The lane, which is typically well surfaced and sustainable with just a few shallow ruts here and there, is one of two running east-to-west from the A44 towards Llandrindod Wells, passing close to Bwlch-llwyn Bank – home of a fearsome special stage during the heyday of the Welsh Hillrally. The local authority’s Countryside Services department believes that the holes need to be repaired as soon as possible to prevent them from getting worse as four-wheeled vehicles struggle to make it through – something which can happen all too easily when

9

NEWS

the initial damage came from another source altogether. As is also the case on Mountain Road in the Lake District (detailed opposite), the unaffected byway surface remains wide enough for walkers, horse-riders and two-wheeled vehicles (whether motorised or not) to continue using it, but the local authority’s proposal is that 4x4s should be prohibited until the work is done. Budgetary restrictions mean the repairs are scheduled to start as soon as possible in April, once the 2018-19 financial year has begun. Once they’re complete, the authority says the lane will be reopened without delay, even if there is still some time left on the minimum six-month formal period of closure.

The rights of way department at Essex County Council has advised interested stakeholders that it intends to form a working group made up of its own officers as well as motor vehicle users. This will be mandated with decision-making on the management of green lanes in the county – an extremely welcome move away from the us-andthem approach taken by so many local authorities, and one which local Green Lane Association rep Robert Tongue has responded to with enthusiasm. With GLASS represented in the group, lane users in the area can be sure that there’ll be a voice of reason in the ear of what is already one of the country’s most proactive and forward-thinking local authorities.

The Heart Wants...

D

uring its 33 years of manufacture, the Defender saw many incarnations, yet many of us yearned for an arrangement that never saw production on the domestic market: the North American Specification (NAS) Soft Top. So naturally, Brits who fancied the look of the Defender ‘cabriolet’ started building them themselves. And now, Land Rover specialist Arkonik has done one too, with the release of its new high-spec soft-top 90. The Parallax D90 is an exquisitely finished, mighty-fine looking soft-top and is the latest edition of the Defender to come from the Somerset-based workshop. But once again, this beauty is sadly destined for America. Still, it’s more than worthy of an ogle.

When you look into the meaning of the word ‘parallax’, it gets a bit sciencey. Essentially, it’s the difference in the perceived position of an object when viewed from different locations. So, the D90 can be parked between two differing backdrops and you can run from side to side pedantically so it lives up to its name. The best place to do this (if you really must) to accurately reflect what the Arkonik Parallax is all about, would be right at the point where the road becomes the beach. Say, in Venice, California for argument’s sake. From one side portraying the sleek image – the subtle contrast of the Santorini Black bonnet, KBX Signature grille, tailgate and wheel arches with the Bonatti Grey light surrounds, Fire &

Ice side steps and bodywork; the 18” Kahn 1983 alloys adorned with BFGoodrich AT tyres and of course, the main event, the black XS soft-top kit – seemingly in the thick of the bustling urban backdrop. Then, on the other hand, if you go far enough to the other side of it and have an iced skinny macchiato at a beach-side caffeine outlet, you’ll see that it is still a true Land Rover. Having put the top down, of course, you’ll be staring at a 200Tdi 90 that is mechanically standard, and we all know what they’re capable of. The Arkonik team are high-level professionals, and their ‘Fender expertise is spread across a trident of specialist processes. First off is the Origins line which sees 90s and 110s restored

attentively to their former glories. Next is the Editions arm, a range of built-to-order in-house designs that utilise all teams of the Arkonik family. And finally, the Bespoke arm which responds to custom commissions and produces unique Defenders to order. The Parallax sits in the median family, and shines a light on the capabilities of the workshop when they play without a script. This edition is earmarked for urban life, hence the sleek and suave exterior. But the interior is just as much of a draw. The loaded cabin can seat six with the two Elite sports seats up front and the four extended, tip-up seats beneath the canopy – all of which are leather. The instruments are exquisitely finished too, with a brushed aluminium and black leather swatch. The Arkon X steering wheel, with its tri-spoke design and leather wrap is crisp and contemporarily matches the ship it steers. Door furniture and the gear knobs are also metallic buoys in the pelt ocean. Between the driver and passenger seats sits an Elite Loc-box for safe and secure storage, and the cabin is topped off by a sound system enhanced by Pioneer Apple Carplay. There’s a lot going on with this 90, and the Parallax looks incredible – whatever angle you’re peering from. Even if it isn’t your cup of tea, I’m sure you can at least agree that it at least looks much more habitable than a standard Defender from way back when. But if you’re already familiar with Arkonik, you’ll know that despite being based here in Blighty, their clientele is based wholly in America. Still, look on the bright side – you’d much rather do the spanner work yourself. For Britain’s NAS 90 fans, building your own continues to be the only answer.

NOTHING BRIGHTER.

Words: George Dove

The very latest in Land Rover parts, accessories and merchandise

A more Engaging look I know that Land Rovers are machines that inspire patriotism, and therefore mentioning German engineering is perilous in this forum but, as I’m sure you know, they’re good at making things. 110 Technik is a company inspired by German efficiency and their new Engage4x4 grille for Defenders is made of reinforced steel, used in offshore wind towers, so it’s of a more than qualified grade to protect the inner workings of your Landy. Its hardy appearance is stereotypically practical and the demountable slats mean that it’s customisable, too. For full details and installation instructions visit 110technik.co.uk.

The versatility of Land Rovers often means that they double up as daily drivers and off-road toys for many of us out there. If you have a conversation with anybody who uses a Landy like this, you’re certain to hear either or both of the words ‘compromise’ or ‘prioritise’. It’s either noisy on the road because of the tyres or it can’t quite get where you want it to because it’s low enough for the kids to climb into. Well, Extreme 4x4 have rejuvenated their popular Challenge Dampers, making them even more versatile. Designed for both off-road use and motorway cruising, the dampers come with standard mountings so they’re easy to install. The steel dampers are available in standard height, and +2” or +5” sizes for Defenders, first-gen Discoverys and the Range Rover Classic. For the full scoop, you can find them on extreme4x4.co.uk

Stay Pumped Tyres are an essential piece in the harmonious act of driving. Despite all of the parts that make a car move, the tyres are the only aspect of your car that keep you on the straight and narrow – and the steep and uneven. Yet it’s a part that many drivers forget about in their maintenance routine. The Ring RAC660 tyre pump will help you keep on top of your Landy’s tyre health. The pump has a backlit screen on which you simply set the tyre pressure and wait for it to inflate. It is powered by a 12V in-car socket or via the mains, and is also adept on the campsite as it can fill airbeds and also features an LED light, so it can be used day or night. The full specification is up for your perusal at ringautomotive.com.

Cool Land Roguer Gear Like a soul mate, you’ll always love your Landy. But sadly, the big oafs can’t go everywhere with you. And whilst, say, having a motif of a Series II on your mug or a Defender on a t-shirt isn’t the same as the real thing, it’s better than nothing. Beggars can’t be choosers, and if you choose to do something that your Landy can’t, like GO INSIDE, it’s the next best thing. Luckily, Cheshirebased designers, Rogue Ink, have a range of products with Landy motifs emblazoned proudly upon them that will satisfy everyone. From mugs to clothing, their designs of all Landies from early Series Is to Defenders, they offer a tasteful way of shoving your Green Oval love in everyone’s face. For enquiries and to see the full design list visit rogueink.co.uk.

Bush Power It’s not just Land Rover getting excited about their 70th birthday, Powerflex has got in on the party, too. They’ve released a new range of suspension bushes specifically for the iconic Defender. The range comes with a

fantastic lifetime warranty on the products which have been tested and developed for more than two years. Across the range is a series of products that include bushes for front and rear radius arms to counteract the issues encountered

in both standard and aftermarket suspension kits. There are also Handling Kits available, which comprise of products from the range that combine to exploit the full performance of the suspension system. You can read the electronic booklet on the Powerflex website to decide just what it is your Defender’s suspension needs. Head over to here: powerflex.co.uk

A Foam Favourite Washing the Landy can be a burden. Nothing beats the sight of it gleaming in the sunlight, but many things trump the process to get it there. Especially in the winter when the roads are wet and the muck sticks about like flies around, well, muck. Autoglym’s new Polar Blast foam is engineered to loosen and lift dirt and grime ahead of shampooing. But if your Landy is only slightly soiled, the foam can act instead of a shampoo. The foam removes and the loosens the blemishes and is designed to be removed via jet washer – eliminating a streaky finish. And a fun fact – the foam sticks to vertical surfaces with ease, which is

bound to entertain your inner child for longer than it should. Why not let our Landies be freshers for a day, and treat

them to a foam party? You can get your 2.5-litre bottle from autoglym.com for £16.99.

Easy as 1, 2, heat

We’re simple beings. All we need to be happy is a Land Rover, somewhere to drive it and somewhere to fiddle with it. The only downside is that workshops and garages aren’t the most hospitable environments. Well, the new MeacoHeat Motion heaters are key players in any comfortable garage setup. Thanks to their motion sensors, they kick in once they notice movement and stop once you leave the room. Their compact design means there will still be plenty of room to work on the Landy but to do so in cosiness. A thermal cut out and tilt safety technology ensures that if they are knocked over the heat cuts out, and a fan function means they can perform cooling duties in the summer months, too. There’s two sizes available, both of which have temperature controls and can be set to run on timers. This gadget is so convenient that you’ll forget you even bought it, so those nights in the workshop will be just like before, but better. All tyred up When you change rims you have to change the tyres too, by default. If, for some reason, you change your rims often, or like to change between sets of tyres for on and off-road use, then you may find it useful to have multiple sets of rims. Thomas Performance are offering tyres and rims in a single package – in a variety of styles.

Coming with either BFGoodrich or Maxxis tyres, the array of wheels ranges from sleek five-spoke units to the more aggressive variants with faux beadlocks. Why not head over to thomasperformance.co.uk, to see the full range and decide how you’re going to kill two birds with one stone.

Open All Angles Defenders are practical vehicles, so improving them in this aspect can take some serious time and brain power. And that’s exactly what 110 Technik have done. They’ve come up with the Abenteuer4x4 wide-angle door brackets. The stainless-steel brackets allow the rear second doors a perpendicular opening. The oblong holes in the design allows the maximum angle to be finetuned to your needs and no drilling required during installation the brackets are simple to fit. Your parents have probably told you at some point in your life that ‘the best things come in small packages’. As a child, I couldn’t think of anything that was better in small packages. Presents – nope. Fast food ¬– no. Money – definitely not. Even still, years later I stick by my stance. But there is one exception to the rule. The new StarBuddy work light from NightSearcher is small but mighty. Powered by nine ‘A’s from three batteries, the multi-functional LED light has your under-the-bonnet illumination needs sorted. The adjustable stand is magnetic and has an inbuilt hook, enabling widespread versatility. With a floodlight that can chuck out 180 lumens, an inspection light offering 80 lumens and flashing red emergency numbers, this little star really is your buddy in any situation. It can run for over three hours in each setting, with the blinkers on tap for up to double that. To be further dazzled, visit nightsearher.co.uk.

First there was the 80-inch Land Rover, and later the 88” wheelbase that was produced for over 25 years. But between those two eras, a middle ground was found – the 86-inch Landy

n the Fifties, Land Rover had assembled the basic components needed to create the world’s greatest four-wheel-drive machine, and was now set on perfecting the craft, and polishing the diamond as it were, as Solihull looked to push the engineering boundaries even further. For the first six years of production, the Land Rover had only been served up in one shape and size: the short wheelbase 80-inch machine with a distinctly agricultural outlook. Up until 1954, if you wanted a Land Rover this was your one and only option, bar the ill-fated Tickford Station Wagon. But as Land Rover’s reputation increased, so did the wheelbase of its most treasured asset. With the Mid-Fifties came the mid-80s wheelbase, specifically moving to an 86” setup, which gave owners an extended area of loadspace to make the UK’s best multipurpose vehicle even more practical. The days of producing an 86-inch Land Rover were short-lived, however, with the 88” wheelbase coming in two years later and stubbornly sticking around for nearly three decades after its debut. This means that the interim wheelbase Land Rovers are rare – and also very old. So to see one as

Words and Pictures: Mike Trott you see before you now is something to truly savour. Churchill 4x4 always seem to churn out restored Land Rovers that are capable of making you think you’re knocking on the pearly gates. And here before you lies one of the best examples of an 86” Series I you’re likely to find anywhere. Manufactured in December 1955, but only registered for the first time in May 1956, this Series I is an ex-military supply vehicle that has been painstakingly restored and now gives onlookers the feeling they’ve rewound the clock back over sixty years. It’s a piece of art to behold, but we must delve beneath that tidy exterior. Chiefly, we need to assess exactly what work has been carried out to result in such a craft. Firstly, this is an 86” on its original chassis. Repairs have been made in parts, including a new rear crossmember, and the whole structure was painted on completion, but there’s no denying a vehicle managing to keep hold of its chassis for this many years is a feat. Just visualise your Nan’s dentures swimming in that glass of water by the bedside… not everyone keeps a hold of themselves as well as Land Rovers.

Actually, we all know that’s a questionable statement. Few Land Rovers stand the test of time like our gummy grandparents – this Series I has received a brand new bulkhead in the restoration process, for example. Elsewhere, the gearbox has been reconditioned, the axles rebuilt and the following items are all fresh out of the box: the carburettor, suspension and brakes; the fuel tank, battery and a wide array of seals, such as the front and rear crank seals.

Above: A step up from the original, but here we’re referring to the 2.0-litre petrol that replaced the initial 1.6-litre unit first used in a Land Rover Left: Notice the light on the wing where normally there would be two… Land Rover may have done things by half, but Churchill 4x4 don’t, even on a vehicle with a mere 27,964 miles showing on the clock. ‘This was bought as a strip-down project,’ says Jonathan Churchill, owner of the Worcestershire-based enterprise that keeps bringing these Landies back from the brink. ‘The guy who owned the vehicle had started working on it, but not finished it. Sadly, there seems to be an increase in people doing that.’ Restoration is not a quick practice, and you certainly won’t revert a Land Rover back to its best in a single weekend! Aside from any structural work, this 86” received a full check over on its engine, which in this case is the 2.0-litre petrol unit that was given to all 86-inch Landies following the

engine’s first introduction to the Series I back in 1952. ‘We checked all components before using them, like we always do, and any parts that needed replacing, were,’ Jonathan explains. ‘The bodywork was resprayed in the iconic Bronze Green, both inside and out, plus the galvanised caps around the vehicle were re-galvanised.’ In addition, the wheels were shot-blasted, painted and engulfed in new 600 x 16 Deestone tyres. But, back to the 1950s for a moment and while the wheelbase on the Land Rover had grown, there were other changes made on the vehicle during the 86-inch era in order to expand the Series I’s customer base. A proper Station Wagon variant was launched that utilised strong materials like metal, rather than

Above: Hopefully, in this picture, you can make out the raised edge of the lettering on this number plate. It compliments the attention to detail elsewhere on this restored rarity

Left: Pedals give a very classic feel, that being stubborn and the connection that few modern cars could ever dream of

wood, and features such as the Safari Roof were born. On the Churchill 86” Land Rover there is no Station Wagon rear, but instead an Exmoor Trim soft-top, combining satisfyingly with the front seats in the cabin, also sourced from Exmoor. There is a connection to the Station Wagon derivative here, even if it’s a discrete one. The headlights are located in the main centre panel as per, but the sidelights have been altered to Station Wagon specification. ‘This spec is a combined sidelight and cuts down on having two lights on the front wing,’ says Jonathan. ‘The rears use a duel filament bulb and a built-in sidelight.’ These minor details make the Series I look neater, and perhaps that’s something to be applied to the 86” as a

whole, especially over its 88” successor. It’s all subjective, of course. ‘The 88-inch Land Rovers had the longer front wings, so you could argue they were perhaps not as pretty aesthetically as the smaller 80”. The 86”, though, could be seen as a halfway house,’ continues Jonathan. ‘I had a 1955 86” personally, but I always ran it with no roof on. It looked great with the roof and windscreen down – and in many ways this one we’ve restored has thrown me back to the days and memories of running my own.’ You can picture it now, like old footage of grand prix cars bustling along, half a man sticking out the top and a distinct windswept demeanour about him. In truth, it doesn’t matter how you set up your Land Rover, particularly with a Series motor because they all

give one of the most enchanting driving experiences found anywhere. However, while Land Rover were busy settling on the maths underneath their talented star, in the transition from 80 inches to 88”, the 86-inch Land Rover played an important role in the ongoing development of a legend. Think of it as a teenager: an adolescent being that has grown from its infancy yet is still finding its way in the world. Those years of growing don’t last long, but like the 86” Series I, they remain some of the very best. Churchill 4x4 always have a selection of Land Rovers in stock, ranging from restored Series Land Rovers through to modern Green Oval machines. I

would like to propose a thought to you. Do feel free to smack me on the head with some common sense next time you see me if you feel I may have got this wrong... In my eyes, the Discovery is the Land Rover that has changed the most from its incarnation in 1989 to how it is now

in the present day. I’m sure this will provoke many outbursts from some of you, arguing that the Range Rover has gone from being a coiled and slightly upmarket workhorse to a multi-millionaire’s luxury car – or that the Defender, once a glorified tractor, was guilty of being a more luxurious item in its final

The original Discovery was a simple thing, and that’s why we loved it. Capable of the dirty work, but scrubbing up well when required, this was the definition of versatile. And it can off-road with the cream of the crop... moments alive than even the original Rangey used to be. Yes, I’ll admit when the new Defender comes out in the next year or so, I will happily retract that statement. But for now, you know what I mean. Anyway, the Discovery. Once, it was a stylish but affordable family vehicle that was comfy, practical and brilliant off-road. It had coil springs and live axles, and you put it into low box by fighting with a lever that usually fought back before finally engaging with a happy clunk. Later, the electronics started coming along. Hill Descent Control put in an appearance. Then came independent suspension, air springs and engines

shared with Jaguar. Terrain Response joined the party, followed by 20” wheels. See what I mean? Here’s the thing, though: however much the Range Rover has changed, it has always been the choice for upper-class Landy buyers. The Discovery was once the ‘family Defender’ – highly sought after, but still affordable enough for the common man. Now, it’s an executive car, and a posh one at that. How many of us could afford to buy a new Discovery these days? Even the cheapest costs more than forty grand. It’s become a squared-off Range Rover. The current Discovery is still a brilliant vehicle, of course. It’s just that it’s

brilliant in ways that make it a totally different proposition to the good old trucks that made the Discovery name so famous. Trucks like the Mk1 belonging to James Old, for example. It’s a good old motor to be sure, and he’s modified it from good to great. In doing so, he’s kept it nice and simple – much like the original Discovery itself, in fact. ‘I started out in other 4x4s and ran an SJ when I started to go out laning with Dave and his friends,’ says James. Dave is Dave Knapp, half of the team that put James’ truck together. The other is Shane Penfold, whose own Discovery was featured in a previous issue of The Landy.

Above: Got a set of steering arms that basically can’t be broken, however hard you hit them? If the answer is yes, then you too have probably got them hidden away behind a steering guard which in itself will only let things through if they’re rocket-propelled and/or loaded with explosives. If you look very carefully, you’ll just about be able to see a Terrafirma RTC steering damper here too ‘I wanted something comfier to drive and I wasn’t prepared to drive the SJ to Wales from Devon. Dave and I met through an old club and he suggested the Discovery to me.’ James was on the lookout for his new laning toy and he eventually purchased a Discovery 1 thinking that would be that. Unfortunately, however, that turned out to be a bit of a blunder.

‘I bought a Discovery 1 previously, which had already been modified... that was a mistake! The quality of the build was really poor,’ James explains. The end wasn’t too far away, after James copped a blowout on the motorway. Bye-bye ropy Disco, hello next build. ‘Dave and Shane have a really good partnership,’ says James. ‘One supplies

while the other fits. I’ve never had any issues with the vehicles Dave and Shane have built for me.’ Dave and Shane, of DK Automotive and Fatcat 4x4 respectively, have also now built a Discovery 2 for James. They’re collaborated on another vehicle, too, but this time it’s a challenge truck. ‘I do like the challenging sections of off-roading. But I also like the more scenic lanes. I enjoy it across the board, really, hence why the challenge truck was built – although it was a bit of a money pit if I’m honest!’ Surely not. Now the Discovery 2 has come along, it’s replaced James’ faithful D1. But when it was being built, it was everything he wanted. ‘I gave the guys a free run on it, which sounds stupid but they knew what I was after. Having your mates build your trucks is always a bonus! They would run things past me throughout the build, like if the axles needed more work for example or something else wasn’t quite right.’

Suspension extreme MPER DEFENDER BUMPER

Above: We’re not great fans of laning on unnecessarily aggressive tyres, so we applaud James’ choice of the Cooper Discoverer STT for the vehicle

The boys from Somerset like their Terrafirma products, and James’ D1 is testament to that. ‘It’s just what Shane supplies. He uses a lot of Terrafirma stuff – and you can see why!’ The vehicle itself is an XS model, which was the blingy one back when the D1 was new. One step down from the top of the range, it’s a nice, comfortable way to go off-roading. That’s the reason the D2 has now replaced it, though – with James citing an even comfier ride. He rather likes the TD5, too: ‘It’s so much better than the 300Tdi, and you don’t feel you’re rinsing the guts out of the engine.’ These things matter less if all you do is trash around at a playday ten minutes up the road, but for exploring Britain’s green lanes a vehicle has to be able to hold its own on the blacktop. ‘I’m based down in Devon so I have to travel relatively far in order to get to some of the lanes we’ve set out to explore,’ agrees James. ‘That’s why I enjoy the comfort of the Discovery. We’ve done the lanes around Bath; done Wales and now we’re looking at going still further afield for the odd weekend getaway.’ The Discovery 1 may not be perfect, but it takes you back to what Land Rovers once were all about. The steel springs, the clatter of the Tdi lump harmonising with an R380 gearbox; how many times will it have put a smile on James’ face? That’s the thing about old trucks. The models they’ve become are better in almost every way. But for smiles per pound, you can’t beat them. James’ Discovery was photographed at the Xtreme Offroad 4x4 venue, based in Shepton Mallet. Adding Strings to the Bow

Words and Pictures: Mike Trott

An international racing team sounds like a fast-paced lifestyle where personnel are kept on their toes and speed is the mantra which the community thrives upon. So what business does a race team have restoring old Land Rovers from the vineyards of Europe?

I

f someone mentioned to you the names of venues such as the Nürburgring and Spa Francorchamps, not only may they be as alien to you as Tatooine, but if you are familiar with these destinations you’ll know that you’re unlikely to find many Land Rovers in these parts. An international GT4 racing team, yes. But a 1992 restored Defender dropside flatbed… we think not. Never-

theless, it doesn’t mean that these two worlds can’t in some way be connected, as you’re about to find out. Academy Motorsport is predominantly a race outfit that currently competes in the British GT Championship and GT4 European Series, the latter of which they finished as runners-up in 2017, and their current chariot of choice is a well-known British icon. No, it’s not a Defender, but it is an Aston Martin V8 Vantage. This is the sort of machine capable of 185mph, not 85mph. Academy Director, Matt Nicoll-Jones, who’s also one half of the driver lineup, is used to wringing the neck of V8s as he ekes out every last drop of performance in an attempt to scrub those extra milliseconds off the lap times. But, when not wearing his race suit, he likes to enjoy a slightly slower lifestyle.

Having always had a soft spot for vehicles carrying the Green Oval, Matt has a number of Land Rovers to call his own, with his daily runabout presently a Range Rover. However, there’s more to Land Rovers than just owning one. Academy Motorsport is no stranger to long hours in the workshop – but rather than spending hours rubbing off the traded paint donated from other GT cars, Matt and the team have begun to branch out into Land Rover restoration. It makes sense really: if you can put a crashed sports car back together in a matter of hours, rebuilding a basic Meccano set is going to be a doddle. ‘I’ve always liked Defenders and I knew this would be a relatively simple project,’ says Matt. ‘This is a separate venture for us, but we’ve always got

Above: Not only is this a Defender restored to the highest order, but it is a dropside flatbed which could feasibly be used as a workhorse once more. Unlikely of course, because any old Land Rover is now worth preserving

To advertise in The Landy, call our team on 01283 553244 w w w. t h e l a n d y. c o . u k We’re on Facebook: www.facebook.com/thelandyuk restorations ongoing. We’ve even got one of Stirling Moss’ little cars here.’ As intriguing as that may be, we’re here for one very special Defender. It arrived with Matt nearly two years ago and – when not off racing Astons – the Defender has been receiving some major attention to restore it back into pole position. ‘The Defender we have here has been fully rebuilt,’ emphasises Matt. ‘Anything that moves was either restored or replaced, but we’ve managed to retain all the key original components.’ You’ll have picked up on the fact this is a left-hand drive motor, which means in this very original and tidy condition Matt could now feasibly export it out to the States, especially with a handsome petrol V8 powering the truck. America isn’t where this Land Rover started its life, though. The story goes that this vehicle was originally exported to Europe as a Special Vehicles Defender, spending time in Austria and/or Switzerland and working on the vineyards. ‘There’s no proof or paperwork to back up the tale that came with the truck, but based on the body structure alone, it’s more than plausible,’ says Matt. If you look round the back, within the loadspace, there’s a wooden ‘head-

board’ that lives behind the driver’s cab. Whether that was fitted to offer support to people standing in the back, it’s a question that may never get an answer. We can be certain on something, though, because this Defender looks considerably better now than when it first reached the hands of Academy Motorsport. Once a neglected and nasty wreck with camo green bodywork that had been roll-painted on, it’s now been rejuvenated with a lick of Old English White. This Defender is on its original bulkhead, with a new outrigger the only alteration on its chassis, while the engine is the same unit that was placed in from birth. Matt and the team have made every effort to keep things as they were, but from a cosmetic point of view, things have been drastically overhauled.

The doors, bonnet and interior, including the roof lining are all new, with Exmoor carpets, new seatbelts and pull cables completing the cabin. Matt is a perfectionist, you see. As a racing driver you need to be. Every flinch on the throttle or overexuberance in the corners is another moment lost in the pursuit of outright speed. The meticulous nature stretches into the business of Land Rover recommissioning. For instance, the gearbox and transfer box was rebuilt not once, but twice. ‘It was done once, although for some reason there seemed to be a slight noise; a tick, so we rebuilt it again,’ explains Matt. The powder coating used around the vehicle is of a commercial grade, just like in the battery compartment.

Issue 49: March 2018

Left: Few Defenders ever received the Rover V8, but this is one of them. Academy Motorsport has completely rebuilt this unit and, even when idling, it tickles the senses

As you can see, this isn’t a project that has been undertaken on a whim. The attention to detail and thorough work this 110 has received is clear to see. Not only is Academy Motorsport a team of great racers recognised across Europe, but thanks to Matt and his own personal affection towards Land Rovers, this is an outfit that can restore Land Rovers to the highest quality – plus they can source and recommission a Land Rover just for you, if you so wish. Perhaps wandering around the paddocks of infamous racetracks won’t mean you come across a wealth of classic Land Rovers, but with Matt and Academy Motorsport it just goes to show that the appreciation for these special machines made in Solihull stretches far beyond the mere reach of those working out in fields. One marque, love it. This rejuvenated 110 has come through the rebuild and is ready to find a new home. It is currently up for sale and, as mentioned, would be suitable for export. If you’d like to express your interest in becoming this Defender’s next owner, then ring 01905 840085 or visit www.academymotorsport.com

Right: When you’re going to rebuild a Land Rover, or any vehicle for that matter, you may as well go all out. Do it once, and do it right. On this 110, even the battery compartment has been given the once over with commercial grade powder-coating

Whip it like Beckham

Words and Pictures: Mike Trott

Brimmed bank accounts, golden boots and swanky pads – footballers have it all. They even have some pretty flash wheels to run about in. Just look at this Range Rover Sport that once belonged to Golden Balls himself…

I

wouldn’t say any of the editorial team here at The Landy could be categorised as ‘hip’. In fact, the very use of such a phrase confirms my initial suspicions. Naturally, we work hard to mould the English language into some sort of entertainment fit for your very eyes, but even we can be baffled at times by some of the fresh terminology emerging on the ‘scene’ today. When TOWIE arrived on our screens, everything became more ‘reem’, and now it seems you can’t travel anywhere these days without having your ‘mandem’ in tow. Whatever happened to when towing was just something you

did with tools or livestock and going down to the pub was just something you did with your mates? And another thing – because I’m on Instagram and ‘on point’ with the latest technology, I see people post pictures that they refer to as their ‘whip’. In all honesty, they just look like cars to me… If I’m right then, I guess it’s feasible you could look ‘reem’ while cruising about in your ‘whip’ with the ‘mandem’. Both you and I never thought that would be a sentence to appear in a Land Rover magazine, but there you go. The Range Rover we have waiting in the wings to show you is probably

something the youth of today would happily claim to be their ideal ‘whip’. It’s also the sort of large and blackedout craft you’re likely to see emerging from Carrington or Melwood, usually with a chap in his mid-twenties behind the wheel, donning armfuls of ‘dope ink’ and a wardrobe ensemble styled by Ali G. But this Range Rover Sport was once owned by a real global superstar, a man renowned for having an excellent ‘whip’ of his own. David Beckham rose to fame during his early career with Manchester United, and his ability to bend a ball into the box or around a

We’re on Facebook: www.facebook.com/thelandyuk

Above: Presumably the amount of exhaust pipes equates to the hundreds of million someone is worth? Shame it’s not World Cup triumphs… wall of competitors became his trademark, so much so that they even made a film based on it. The Range Rover Sport you see here may not be as agile as one of the many footballs Beckham has curved through the air, but likewise it’s still something of a rarity. As you’d imagine, no expense was spared on the customisation of this Range Rover and there are several features about the vehicle that confirm its link to the sporting icon. Starting out as a mildly ordinary 4.2-litre supercharged V8 model, the Range Rover was placed in the careful hands of Kahn Design where they would make Mr Beckham’s vision a reality. Nice to be able to do such a thing, I’m sure. Kahn is an established and successful design house, which has been responsible for enhancing many a Land Rover. It has to be said that they tend to stick to one type of style more than others, namely making every part of a vehicle black and turning a standard vehicle into something Batman would approve of. Here the Sport has been given a new body kit, five-spoke alloy wheels

and privacy glass akin to the grade of tint found on presidential vehicles. All the exterior upgrades, combined with the numerous tweaks made on the inside mean this car was worth around £100,000 when first built. Its value has dropped somewhat in the last decade, partly because people want cars that are capable of more than 4mpg. It does make a good noise, though, with those old Jag units capable of giving you a tickle in the eardrums. Heading back inside for a moment, there’s a few highlights we should point out to you that are customised over standard. The quilted leather, for example, was hand-stitched, along with the ‘Beckham’ name being adorned onto the floor mats. Moving back through the interior you’ll find TV screens in the back of the headrests, an addition that I’m sure Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz appreciated – sadly Harper never had the chance. And at the very back, if you look inside the boot, there sits a bespoke Genesis sound system that even carries a plaque designating this as the vehicle of Mr David Beckham. I’ve no doubt Becks will have enjoyed blasting

out his ‘rhymes’ on the way back from the training ground; shades on, one hand on the wheel and a train of paparazzi in his wake. Mentioning sunglasses, it appears dear Victoria may have left some behind at some point. Perhaps while sitting alongside David, Victoria had an epiphany to be involved in the future development of the Range Rover brand, more so than just being a plain old customer. Maybe it was this shockwave of realisation that caused her to leave the vehicle in such a hurry and leave the sunglasses case behind? What you’re looking at here then, ladies and gentlemen, could be a memento linked to the very instance that spurred the initial plans of the Range Rover Evoque… Vehicles like this Range Rover Sport became, and still are, commonplace with the footballing personalities of today. However, I’d like you to consider this: would the enhancing and ‘blinging’ of Defenders and other Land Rovers have taken off quite so rapidly if the likes of David Beckham and co. had stayed away from them?

It’s an interesting thought. Of course, I’m well aware that companies such as Kahn Design have been going since the late Nineties, a time when Becks was still yet to reach peak fame, but you never saw a Discovery 2 rolling on ‘rims’ and brandishing a vulgar widebody kit, did you? Even Land Rover themselves make vehicles that have become distinctly more Cheshire than at the start of the century – so maybe we should be calling these machines things like the Davender or the Posh Rover. Either way, in the last ten years a new style of Land Rover has surfaced, one that doesn’t want to blend in, but instead wants to strike a pose or statement and throws out the traditional values of a Land Rover being a simple and humble machine. Still, as long as the kids think the new generation of Land Rovers is ‘sick’, then vehicles with a Green Oval badge will have a place in the future

of the automotive industry. And rap videos, too. Thank you to Filippo Pignatti for showing us this Range Rover. Filippo helps run The Classic Car Fund, aimed

at showcasing the investment opportunities in the classic car sector. This Range Rover is one of many vehicles currently up for sale and can be viewed at www.classicmotorhub.com

The Stuff of Dreams

Words: Mike Trott Pictures: José Almeida

If you had to pick one country to explore for the rest of time – with the aim of experiencing as diverse a climate, culture and civilisation as possible – then there is only one destination you need to pin down on your globe…

S

ome years ago, Portugal was a destination that few people considered, either when looking at where to spend their next summer holiday or where to acquire their next overlanding fix. For a good while, Morocco and Iceland have been the ‘Benidorm’ of off-roading retreats, while it’s taken a little longer for other regions to be explored and brought into focus. Naturally, that’s not to say there is anything wrong with Iceland or Morocco – or indeed Benidorm. You know what you’re likely to face: with Iceland the clue is

in the name, and as for Morocco, the combination of Saharan sand and Atlas Mountains is still a firm favourite. But humans have an incredible way of wanting more, like with leftover turkey, or finishing off the now stale mince pie collection… but never with an extra mile on the treadmill. Hmm. Either way, the analogy still stands: once we’ve seen one particular feat or attraction, we want to move on to the next. So, in much the same way we Brits captured Benidorm, we widened our horizons to other places of interest. The Algarve has since taken a hit – another

locale of the Mediterranean that can guarantee your child will look like a lobster after a single day playing in the hotel swimming pool. Whilst the Algarve gets all the headlines, and therefore all the mass tourist influxes, the rest of Portugal can sit back and bask in its own alternative of quiet and tranquil exploration. In the last few years, Portugal has crept onto the overlanding radar as somewhere that offers a different experience every time you visit. Head out in summer and you’ll get sun-baked trails and brilliant blue skies, but make a

beeline for the interior throughout winter and you’re likely to meet snow-capped mountains with river crossings to boot. There’s also a wealth of culture on tap and more than just off-roading and scenic beauty to take in. You couldn’t dream for more. But why listen to me when you can take the word of someone who really knows Portugal. José Almeida, unlike me, is Portuguese. He knows the land very well, and as a rather patriotic soul, has been endeavouring to showcase Portugal’s greatest talents ever since 2011. What started out as a mere hobby and just an enthusiastic local giving detailed tours of the area he loved, has turned into a full-blown enterprise dedicated to providing travellers with a behind-thescenes take on Portugal. ‘I finally took the plunge in early 2016 with the creation of Dream Overland, after curiosity continued to rise about our country,’ expresses José. ‘Now we run a host of tours designed to meet the needs of whichever personalities want to come and explore

Portugal, whether it’s a chance to see the Serra da Estrela mountain range or a more laidback approach with a trip to the Douro wine region.’ José is keen to give people their dream overlanding the right way. He is therefore a registered tour operator with Portuguese authorities and strives to run his adventures with a sustainable outlook. When off-roading, for example, he abides by a strict code of conduct while also promoting local projects and communities, and ensuring no trace of the tour’s presence is left behind. Think of it as not running the hotel bar in Benidorm completely dry; leaving enjoyment for others to revel in long after you’ve had your share. ‘It’s crucial to leave a positive impression on the people that we meet along the way, just as it would be if you were green laning in the UK,’ says José. I can’t help but feel José would leave a lasting impression on you too. Here is a man whose passion for Portugal is clear. He will tailor-fit your adventure to the interests you hold

The Skycamp is the Limit

Roof tents are a great way to save space when you’re living out of your Landy, whatever the length of your adventure. But sometimes, they’re a bit of a faff and are more difficult to put up than a regular tent. Luckily for those of us who feel this way, Kickstarter exists. And from the realms of the crowd-funded business machine, iKamper spawned the most successful tent campaign the website has ever seen. Their smart design

raised a record $2.3million (yes, they’re Yanks) thanks to the rapid time of 30 seconds from flat to fully up, and the design that includes a spacious tent, a mount and a ladder. There are also an impressive range of accessories, such as a mesh tent replacement, various coverings and awnings that all attach easily and securely. To see the full details and additional extras available, please visit ikamper.com.

Roof racks are so useful, but some things are just too awkward to strap down, without taking up too much space. Surfboards, for example. If you have a surfboard, or a surfboard-shaped thing that you transport on your roof racks, you’ll know what I’m on about.

But once again, Front Runner has spotted this and come up with some solutions. Their range of rack accessories fix any and all of the problems that face you, with water sport specific fitments to guarantee the security of your board. They’ve also produced an ingen-

We love our Landies, and thus we take care of them, ensuring that not only they are healthy but also that they look good. Okay, so they may get muddy from time to time, but that’s par for the course with an adventurous Land Rover. Plus, it actually looks good. Often, the same can’t be said for us – especially if we’ve been living out of the Landy for a few days. If you’re like me, everything will begin in an organised fashion, but as soon as you

unpack that first item, you can never find anything else you need. The result? A visibly stressed demeanour that’s as neat as it is calm. It doesn’t have to be like this, however. Above: In Portugal, you’ll find something for whatever type of explorer you are snippets of Portugal you could never have dreamt of. ‘When we set up, the main drive would always be to discover the other side of Portugal,’ outlines José. ‘Often unknown to the vast majority of people who only hear about Lisbon and the beach resorts in the Algarve, we wanted to transport people beyond the

motorways and allow them to venture off-road. We want to let them reach the top of a hill to admire the landscape, just because they can. ‘There’s history here, too. Although most people don’t know it, Portugal is one of the oldest countries in Europe, with nearly nine centuries of history and traditions, a result of the legacy left

by the various pioneers who inhabited these lands over time, from the Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians to the Romans who left us our language, the northern Europeans and the Arabs.’ Evidently, there is much to learn. And while it’s always polite and respectable to brush up on your Portuguese before getting out there, most people speak good English or French, and Spanish if you’re nearing the border. ‘Although a small country in size compared to other countries in Europe, Portugal has a rich historical and cultural heritage ranging from Celtic traditions in the north east to Moorish influences in the south, creating a great diversity of landscapes and environments that vary from region to region, turning every day into a new discovery,’ enthuses José. If you’re a foodie, Dream Overland hasn’t forgotten about you, either. While the environment is blessed with diversity, Portuguese cuisine is on another level. This is more than just a trip to Nando’s – you can be sure of that! On the coast, seafood and fresh

fish leads the way, while further inland meat, game and poultry rule the menus. There’s a flavour for everyone. You now have many reasons to travel to Portugal, but when to go? José advises against the high season of July and August, and in doing so you may well be able to savour the backcountry in almost absolute solitude. Of course, some like it hot, so spring and autumn still offer plenty of sunshine hours, while snow can be found in the northern mountain ranges should you want to visit Portugal for a winter wonderland. Whether you’re camping, or looking for a little more luxury during your stay, Dream Overland and José can guide you to your best method of discovering Portugal, still one of Europe’s best-kept secrets, especially when witnessed from roads that only Land Rovers can tread on. For centuries, Portugal has been a land of explorers who discovered many parts of the world, but now it’s being discovered by the many people who head south to this part of Europe, so make it your next destination and start preparing for what could be your dream overland trip. www.dreamoverland.com

Ruby’s Off Again: Episode Fourteen

Ruby slots back into Vegas life, Jen and Gav take in San Fran, and a whistle-stop tour of Hollywood sees out the gang’s time in America, before the adventure heads for pastures nuevo

ollowing the seclusion of the Mojave Desert, there was no easing back into city life for Ruby The Landy and co., as the next stop was none other than a return to Las Vegas. After spending a night there, Gav and Jen flew to San Francisco for a few days. Leaving Ruby at the casino, they took in all the Golden Gate City had to offer. Their three days were packed to the brim with landmarks and attractions that utilised their City Pass, including the city’s dungeons, museums and a boat trip. ‘Our highlight was visiting Alcatraz,’ shares Jen. ‘It offered amazing views of the Golden Gate Bridge and downtown San Francisco. We did the audio tour of the prison, and heard about some of the infamous inmates and attempted escapes.’ ‘We saw the cells, the dining room and the old exercise yard,’ adds Gav. After completing the checklist and visiting the famous bridge itself, the trio

were reunited in time for Thanksgiving in Vegas. From there, Ruby lead the way through the Leo Carrillo State Park. ‘It’s right near Malibu Beach, where Grease was filmed,’ Jen says. ‘We walked along the beach and it was absolutely beautiful.’ Next up, tour guide Ruby cruised along the Pacific Highway, taking in the glorious views of the sea and beaches, and through Malibu past the homes of the rich and famous. There was time for a couple of hours exploring the vibrant Venice Beach, and all of its street performers, before honouring Arnie by dropping into Muscle Beach. Home for the next week was the Hollywood Downtowner Inn on Hollywood Boulevard, and after their brush with British television in Alaska, they made it onto stateside prime time. ‘We managed to get audience tickets for the live NBC show, “The Voice USA”, at Universal Studios,’ shares Gav. ‘Whilst we queued to go into the studio, three contestants were being filmed outside. We were briefed to shout, cheer and go bonkers for them. Jen didn’t need to be asked twice!’

‘I told them that I’d come all the way from England to see them. Then we were asked to do an interview with NBC about the Voice and why we were here,’ Jen says, before sheepishly continuing. ‘I may have said it’s the best show in the Universe. We had a great time, the studio was small and we were close to the action.’ After their evening in star-studded company, listening to the future stars of music, the next day was spent looking backwards. On a Heart of Hollywood tour, Gav and Jen learnt all about the origins of the name, years before the glitz and glamour and the world-famous sign. ‘It went back to the time when the name first appeared on maps, in the late nineteenth century,’ shares Jen. ‘We learned about when the movie industry moved here about 1910, when the town didn’t even have a bar or movie theatre!’ ‘We also saw some of the most famous buildings in Hollywood,’ explains Gav. ‘Along the Walk of Fame, we saw the oldest house in Hollywood – the place where Charlie Chaplin’s

Above: They weren’t joking when they said Venice Beach was vibrant Right: Ruby at camp in Bahia de Los Angeles. You know, from this angle she could almost be a member of the Baywatch crew… kids went to school – and the Capitol Records Building.’ Taking in more of the city’s culture, Jen and Gav also embarked on a historic downtown tour, taking in the arts district and all of the street art it’s home to. On their penultimate day in the ‘wood, it was time to indulge their inner children at the Universal Studios theme park.

‘It was wonderful there, we went on all of the rides and met Shrek and The Simpsons!’ Jen continues; ‘It was expensive but well worth the visit. We absolutely loved the Harry Potter Hogwarts set. Not to mention the “Forbidden Journey” ride!’ They closed out the day with a Christmas sound and lights show projected onto Hogwarts Castle, before spending their last day in Griffith Park,

overlooking the globally-recognised Hollywood sign. Moving ever closer to the Mexican border, our globetrotters spent a couple of days in San Diego to reflect upon their time in the States. ‘America wasn’t in our original travel plans, and after their election result Jen wasn’t so keen on the idea,’ muses Gav. ‘But we are glad that we came. We’ve seen so much and loved it all.’

‘The curiosity, the kindness and the warm heartedness of the people we have met has been overwhelming,’ inserts Jen. ‘It’s such an incredibly diverse and beautiful country and we have loved its wonderful wilderness and countryside!’ Despite leaving after nearly four and a half months, Ruby may not have seen the last of the USA, as the plan is to return before shipping back to

England. But now, crossing into Mexico at Tecate, new adventures await. Avoiding the border at Tijuana meant that the British cohort didn’t have to use the busiest border crossing in the world. But that didn’t mean the passage was simple. ‘After dealing with US customs, we should’ve walked through the border

Above: Not always the typical image you have of Los Angeles, but there it is for all the world to see to get our tourist cards,’ tells Gav. ‘But instead we drove straight through the border, thinking we could park, but we got waved straight through into Mexico!’ ‘We ended up driving around trying to work out how to get back, but we couldn’t cross back to America,’ expands Jen. ‘So, we parked in the street and scurried back in case we were stopped for being there illegally!’ Sorting the issue was simple enough once the pair filled in their tourist cards and paid the fee, before attaining a permit for Her Royal Highness, Ruby The Landy. Now in Mexico, the drive began down to the southern end of the Baja Peninsula. The route meandered from the west to the east of the cape, taking in both the Pacific coast and the Sea of Cortez. The first stopover was in Ensenada, at a campsite that overlooked the Pacific Ocean.

‘It was a beautiful spot,’ says Jen. ‘We enjoyed watching the sunsets and pods of dolphins swimming past.’ Continuing down the coast after a couple of days, a vibrant drive over mountains and through a cacti-dense desert ended with another couple of nights spent by the beach, this time in a palapa – an open-sided dwelling with rooves thatched with palm leaves – in San Quentin. Continuing south, the trip headed into Guerrero Negro for a stopover, before heading east to the coastal town of Mulegé. On the shores of the Sea of Cortez, a peaceful camping spot was found – surrounded by palm and banana trees. Shortly after their arrival followed the appearance of some familiar faces. ‘Sylvia and Martin – a German couple we befriended in San Quentin – arrived at the same campsite, and

with them and long-term residents of the campsite we had a great few days,’ recalls Jen. ‘Eric, Don and Lee showed us a local game called Bocci. It’s similar to boules, but when you get a direct hit everybody yells Bocci!’ ‘We also had a night on the town with them, watching the local Frank Sinatra,’ says Gav. ‘But after some margaritas, Jen and I struggle to remember the rest of it!’ From party to the picturesque, the trip progressed along the coastline to Loreto, past its beautiful beaches and its quaint town square. The convoy stopped to take in the culture of the small town. Home to the oldest mission in Baja, and away from its cobbled streets, Loreto offers a malecon – a stone seafront walkway, that combines scenic views and the ocean breeze. For Christmas – and Gav’s birthday – La Paz was the setting. The capital of

Below: Christmas in Mexico is much the same as here in the UK – only hotter and even more vibrant

the Baja Sur region was animated, and a lot was packed into their short stay. But, the local cinema and restaurants paled in comparison to the boat trip on Boxing Day. ‘We swam with whale sharks,’ buzzes Jen. ‘After I got my wetsuit on the right way, we jumped off the little boat with our snorkels, and suddenly we were face to face with a huge whale shark!’ ‘Our guide estimated that the one we saw was about 20-feet long,’ adds Gav. ‘We swam alongside it, watched it feed and got to hang out with it for a while! It was incredible and definitely one of the highlights of the trip to date!’ Sounds like a whale of a time… From La Paz, a few nights were spent wild camping at El Sergento – a beach popular with windsurfers – and at Punta Arena De La Ventana. ‘We had the beach to ourselves for two nights,’ says Gav. ‘In the mornings, we watched the rays swim close to the shore, and I fished from the beach.’ ‘But we still had chicken for tea both nights!’ jibes Jen. The travellers saw in the New Year camping on another stunning beach. At Los Barilles, they watched a super moon rise over the horizon on New Year’s Day. The wild camping continued onto Cabo Pulmo – a national marine park that’s a listed UNESCO world heritage site. It was in this coral reef that Jen and Gav got the taste for snorkelling. ‘We took a snorkelling tour and saw a variety of fish and even seals,’ shares Jen. ‘From our camp spots the next few days in Los Arbolitas and Playa Maria we jumped in for a snorkel too!’ In terms of how you spend a festive period, Jen, Gav and Ruby certainly mixed it up for 2017. And now it’s very much a case of new year, new adventures. The tour continues along the peninsula, to the tip of Baja, and Cabo San Lucas before heading towards Todo Santos and again La Paz, where they will catch a ferry to mainland Mexico. ometimes it’s the smallest of things that creates the biggest problem. You would think a windscreen seal to be pretty harmless, but that’s where you would be wrong my friend. We all know that Defenders – and Land Rovers in general – don’t have the best track record for fighting off corrosion. However, even something as simple as a windscreen seal can play a role in the battle against the rot. And here we’re going to show why. Picture a seal that’s past it’s best. It’s no longer going to do the job it was intended for. Water and dirt will be able

1. Before you can get to the seal, first remove the windscreen wipers using a ratchet. Flick up the black cap at the base and loosen until they detach

1

2. Start to unscrew the dash fixings

2

to penetrate to places they shouldn’t, and before you know it, you could have water trickling down and settling in places you don’t want it to be. Like on the bulkhead. That’s right, you don’t want to give rust any incentive to congregate on your vehicle. So here’s how to change that seal, courtesy of the expert technicians at Ashley 4x4. Just do it sooner rather than later. Don’t worry, you can buy us that beer another time. Ashley 4x4 is a Land Rover specialist situated near Stafford. 9. Now it’s time to feed the new seal around the edge of the windscreen. Here we used one of Land Rover’s Genuine Parts, but other seals are available at lower cost

10. It’s a tight fit, as it needs to be, but once you have the seal on the windscreen, on the outer edge you need to run either some string or non-metal cable around it with the two ends meeting together

10

12. With the windscreen roped up, rope in your mate to help you relocate the glass into its position. Again, don’t drop

12

13. The windscreen should feel like its 75% in, but this is where the cable or string comes in. With added pressure keeping the windscreen in place, start pulling the cable from out of the lip of the seal

13

14. As you do, the seal should confirm itself around the window frame, with its lips settling either side

14

15. You can see where the seal has lodged itself awkwardly and will need folding out to sit over the edge of the bodywork

11. With that done, take some Fairy liquid and lubricate the frame of the windscreen to help slide in the glass

y the time the late Eighties rolled around, Land Rover wasn’t in the strongest of positions. With competition primarily coming from Japan, but also the United States, the Solihull outfit’s reputation for poor reliability and an inability to provide a middle ground between the agricultural 90 and 110, and the upmarket Range Rover, was putting Land Rover in an increasingly vulnerable position. But then came along their answer to the ‘family SUV’. Enter the Discovery, the saviour of the Green Oval. Since 1989, the Discovery has forged a reputation for being the Land Rover that can do everything. Almost as luxurious as a Range Rover, but almost as good off-road as a Defender, this was the vehicle Solihull – and the world – craved. And now, we look at the first of its kind: the 200Tdi Disco.

‘This has to be one of my favourite Landy engines,’ says Ashley Counsell of Ashley 4x4. ‘It’s a sweet-running four-cylinder unit that is completely bulletproof unless seriously mistreated. Well within the capabilities of a competent home mechanic, the only special tool you’re likely to need is a crank damper puller to access the timing belt.’ So a thumbs up for the engine, which isn’t really surprising. The LT77 gearbox was fitted as standard and, like the LT230 transfer box, is mainly trouble-free. On early LT77s, watch out for spline wear on the main shaft. ‘Listen for a loud knock when releasing the clutch on pulling away. If it’s bad then you’re looking at a reconditioned ‘box and the corresponding gear in the transfer box to rectify,’ informs Ashley. Keep tabs on your oil in the transfer box and the diffs, but also check the steering swivels. Ashley suggests a fill of One-Shot Grease to help, but if

the seals have gone, then you should rebuild with a swivel housing kit. Most other parts of the Discovery are only subject to wear and tear, suspension components for example. The electrics are basic enough, but with that comes a lack of power (maybe upgrade those headlights!) Nevertheless, you’re probably already aware of the major issue that surrounds most examples of Discovery 1, and that’s corrosion. ‘Let’s start with the chassis,’ continues Ashley. ‘Remember that the newest vehicles are now 25-years-old, so few will be really mint unless they’ve been refurbished already. ‘That said, the chassis generally holds up reasonably well – better than those on Disco 2s anyway! You may still have some welding repairs to do but most are not in a horrendous state.’ However, when it comes to the business of a Discovery 1’s body structure,

it’s a different matter entirely. Ashley can do nothing but shake his head at this point. ‘They corrode virtually everywhere: sills, body mounts, boot floor, rear arches, front inner wings, floors etc. Okay, all repair panels are available, and some firms like Froggatts in Macclesfield make bespoke sections to “ease” the repair of common problem areas,’ explains Ashley. The good news, as Ashley points out, is that a lot of vehicles will have had repairs by now, but the standard of these repairs can vary – so check carefully if you’re inspecting a vehicle for purchase. ‘These are quite old cars now; just getting to classic status. Nice, original examples are rare, so if you find one at sensible money it’s a good investment. The early two-door cars will be the first to become collectable – sound like a familiar pattern…?’ muses Ashley.

‘Some parts, particularly interior trim will not be available new anymore, but most mechanical items should be okay for a while yet. ‘Many have been chopped about over the years for laning, but I wouldn’t do that now, keep it original and gain value.’ You’ve been told, now look after that workhorse of yours.

Series I (1948-1958) If you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go. The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike. Its 1940’s engineering gives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once

were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then a finished example will fetch mega bucks. Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished examples now retailing where they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game. The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets. But can you really put a price on such an icon?

Series II/IIA (1958-1971) In 1958, the second-generation Land Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders. Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts. The prices are on the increase, however, as these 50-year-old vehicles start to come into their own as a collec-

tor’s item. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2.0-litre diesel, were underpowered and noisy. The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of refinement over the Series I. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks.

Series III (1971-1985) Following on from the Series IIA, the Series III emerged in 1971 with a few cosmetic tweaks and safety features to freshen up the model. Headlights were shifted out to the wings in-line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top of the bulkhead – not sure it’s a five stars on the Euro NCAP scale, though. The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar

to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout its production, although in 1980 the 2.25 motors switched to a more durable five bearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with. They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.

Lightweight (1968-1984) Possibly the ugly duckling of the Series Land Rover family – but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t find much love for the Series Lightweights. These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance that does divide opinion when you and your mates are in the pub. To mimic the civvy Series machines,

the SIII LWT – built from 1972 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings. These Series Lightweights throw up an extra dimension to Land Rover ownership, with military history and touches often machine-gunning the vehicle. It means you get a Land Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd.

Forward Controls (1962-1978) Only serious enthusiasts need continue reading here. Ownership of any Forward Control is not for the faint-hearted. These leviathans are expensive to run and trying to get hold of some of the parts can be, quite frankly, a bit of a nightmare! Clubs can help here, though, as is often the case with any Land Rover. These vehicles offer substantial

payloads if that’s the sort of thing you’re after, but will also tick the boxes for huge, unnecessary and hilariously addictive fun. If you’re going to go the whole hog then why not buy a 101FC. You’ll have a V8 engine harping away underneath you (literally) and people are likely to clear out of your way when they see you coming in their mirrors. Surely that’s reason enough to buy one?

Ninety/One Ten (1983-1990) The icon of the 4x4 world. This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you just about anywhere in the world. Early examples of the Ninety and One Ten are worth keeping hold of, providing they’re in good condition – but you’ll be searching far and wide for examples that are. This was the birth of the Defender, despite not being christened officially

until 1990, and as such these Land Rovers had coil-sprung suspension, new engines – although they were still terribly underwhelming – and offroad capability that has still yet to be matched today. A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5TD version with low miles and good history. They’re robust and as simple as they come.

Defender 200Tdi (1990-1994) In 1990, the Defender name emerged and with it a cementing of a legacy that already stretched back over 40 years. This was... is the best 4x4 by far. It carried the Tdi badge for the first time and meant that no longer was a Defender being powered by a feeble hamster in a wheel. If you’re in the market for a 200 Defender, though, you might get a 200 unit but it might not necessarily be from

a Defender. Replacing blown units with a Disco 200Tdi is popular, so check the arrangement of the turbo and manifold to see which one you’ve got. The 200Tdi is probably the best for off-roaders, so many of these vehicles will have been worked hard. Some owners have now started restoring these vehicles, meaning a premium price – but can you really put a price on perfection...?

Defender 300Tdi (1994-1998) After the 200 followed the 300Tdi. Essentially, this was a revised version of the predecessor – perhaps a little more refined – but still just as durable. These engines, providing they are properly maintained, can last for decades. Look around for one with full service history and you could find yourself a keeper. Some Tdi Defenders have received galvanised chassis and even

bulkheads, and these are the type of Defender you should be after. A futureproof Landy. By the time the 300Tdi came out, Land Rover was now giving the Defender power steering as standard and disc brakes all-round. It’s the little things after all. Arguably the company’s greatest engine, balancing performance and practicality. The Defender in its prime.

Defender Td5 (1998-2007) Following on from the Tdi era, Land Rover issued the Defender with its Td5 engine from 1998 to 2007. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure that any mods have been done properly. Remaps, EGR valve deletes and uprated intercoolers are a few exam-

ples of what many have been subject to. Lots of power doesn’t always mean happy faces. The rear of the chassis has frequently been called into question, so protect the rear crossmember if it’s in good shape, or else face the consequences. With minimal electrics, the Td5 Defender is still a DIY machine and you’ll be working on one of Land Rover’s most notable masterpieces.

Defender TDCi (2007-2016) The last of the Defenders were fitted with Ford Transit engines – first the 2.4 TDCi, followed by the 2.2 TDCi, brought in to meet Euro V emission standards and keep the Defender alive for another few years. Sadly, these engines denoted the Defender’s swansong, the twilight of its days. They were fitted with six-speed gearboxes, still had phenomenal off-road capability and even made the

Defender a nice place to be. But they were still very much Defenders. The era of blinging also began and you can find special editions out there costing obscene amounts of money. You will pay a premium for these Defenders, especially since the end of production. But if you can grab a 2.2 TDCi and start preserving it now, you may well never see depreciation. We’re no financial advisors, though...

£3500-£20000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (1994-1998). 300Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel.

Pros: A slightly more refined Tdi powerplant, the best? Cons: Erm... erm... hmm, this is hard

Freelander 1 (1997-2006) We haven’t always held the Freelander 1 in the highest regard here at The Landy, but as market prices constantly change, so too can our opinion on certain vehicles. With examples attainable from as little as £500, the Freelander 1 represents a cheap gateway into Landy ownership. There are a few issues to be aware of, though, such as the viscous coupling, which is expensive to replace

and can be upset by simply having mismatched tyres on your axles. The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures, but today’s replacements are much more robust. The V6 is thirsty and the 2.0Di is gutless, so opt for a TD4 – but check the condition of the injectors first. Buy an FL1 and you even get a Landy that’s decent off-road and doesn’t carry the usual trait of rusting after five minutes.

Freelander 2 (2006-2015) Most people will turn their noses up at Freelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true Land Rovers. But while you should turn your nose up at the FL1, the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think. Because of it being replaced by the Discovery Sport, the FL2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels of refinement, a strong 2.2-litre

four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make for a great family vehicle. Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there. Prices are now falling thanks to the Freelander name disappearing from the production line, but for £10,000 you can now get a capable all-rounder that is actually pretty adept off-road and yet still economical to run.

£500-£3000 Versions: 1.8 4cyl petrol (‘97-’05), 2.0Di 4cyl diesel (‘97-’00), TD4 2.0 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘00-’06), 2.5i V6 petrol (‘00-’05). Pros: Cheap to buy, no major rust issues, surprisingly good off-road Cons: There are better Land Rovers out there, FL2 showed the FL1 how it should have been done

£3700-£20000 Versions: 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel, available in two- or four-wheel drive, 3.2 V6 petrol (‘07-’09).

Pros: Better off-road than you may anticipate, reliability, refinement, economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing

52

Range Rover Classic (1970-1996) The Range Rover Classic is one of those vehicles that you could theoretically still use everyday, even now in the 21st Century. If you’re running a V8, however, that may not be such a wise idea. Classic Range Rovers still provide a relatively refined and great drive today, but they can be thirsty if you’re not in one of the various turbo-diesel examples. That said, if you own one and it’s in

good condition – look after it, as it will only appreciate. These vehicles are popular with collectors. Unfortunately, in terms of spare parts, many have succumb to corrosion or have been abused off-road to the point of no return. While an early ‘70s Classic may not be attainable for everyone, tidy examples of the late four-door versions can make for an equally tidy investment.

Range Rover P38A (1994-2002) Many people believe the P38A Range Rover to be a bit of a menace – and often it’s completely justified. Lights on the dashboard, air suspension failure, head gasket failure... the list can start to look like a cartoon bill. Still, it’s not all doom and gloom with the P38. In fact, if you find one in good working order, it’s sensational. Service history is a must, and if you’re going to own one then some

diagnostic equipment is going to be a better companion than a spanner. Avoid the diesel variant as the engine was adopted from a BMW saloon and isn’t up to the task of the extra weight a Range Rover carries. Go for a 4.6 HSE, it’s actually more economical than the 4.0 V8 and you’ll get all the toys (working or not). Or you could try and find an anniversary model or even a Holland & Holland...

Range Rover L322 (2002-2012) Compared to the P38, the L322 Range Rover was a saint. Generally. Its electronic aids were far less temperamental and it delivered a new level of luxury to four-wheeled motoring. The Td6 receives mixed reviews: some say it’s underpowered while others say it’s the best of the bunch. Common sense would steer you towards a TDV8, either the 3.6 or 4.4, but these are the L322s holding out for

strong money. Notably, the petrol V8s are lingering with very appealing price tags, but don’t think running one would be cheap. As with many 21st Century Land Rovers, they have lost their accessability for the home mechanic. Drivetrain faults are becoming more frequent, so you need to look for that FSH. As a car, however, it’s probably all the car you’ll ever need.

Range Rover L405 (2012-present) If you want the very best in automotive luxury, then look no further. The latest incarnation of Land Rover’s flagship Range Rover weighs a whopping 400kg less than its predecessor thanks to the use of an aluminium body, which helps on mpg – although owning one of these suggests that your cash flow isn’t particularly an issue. This is the last word in elegance and majestic motoring. All the engines sup-

ply copious amounts of power to your right foot, while the L405 hasn’t lost any of its off-road pedigree... even if taking one off-road is like asking your alcoholic friend to a wine-testing session. They could comfortably partake, but probably shouldn’t. Prices are still only right for Premier League footballers and people with a link to the royal family. If you fit into that category, then we envy you.

RR Sport 1 (2005-2013) Much of the Range Rover Sport was borrowed from the Disco 3, in fact it shared virtually identical underpinnings, whereas today’s RR Sport uses actual Range Rover foundations. Nevertheless, Land Rover put a Range Rover in a tracksuit and attempted to make a handler out of it. To some extent they succeeded, although it’s no sports car despite what it says on the back of the vehicle.

It can play the leisure vehicle very well, though, and will go off-road like the best of them. If you’re going to buy one, then you need to love it for itself, becausse a Discovery of the same era is more practical, while a full-fat Range Rover is always going to carry an extra layer of prestige. They’re still a good all-rounder, though, and now relatively affordable.

£1500-£50000+ Versions: Two-door (‘70-’85), four-door (‘81-’96), LSE (‘92-’96). 3.5 V8 petrol (‘70-’86), 3.5 EFI V8 petrol (‘86-’89), 3.9 EFi V8 (‘89-’96), 2.4 VM turbo-diesel (‘86-’92), 200Tdi (‘92-’94), 300Tdi (‘94-’96). Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust (again), availability of parts for early models, V8 thirst

£600-£11000 Versions: 4.0 V8 petrol, 4.6 V8 petrol, 2.5 6cyl turbo-diesel.

Pros: Luxury, price, a Land Rover that doesn’t rust. Could even P38 prices rise soon? Cons: Electrics. Nuff said

£4000-£40000 Versions: 3.0 Td6 (‘02-’06), 4.4 V8 petrol (‘02-’07), 3.6 TDV8 (‘06-’10), 4.4 TDV8 (‘10-’12), 4.2 supercharged V8 petrol (‘05-’09), 5.0 supercharged V8 petrol (‘09-’12).

Pros: Great off-road, luxury, image, TDV8 powerplants Cons: Your maintenance bill

£45000-£150000 Versions: 3.0 TDV6, 4.4 SDV8, 5.0 supercharged V8 petrol, 3.0 SDV6 hybrid (‘14-present).

Pros: Styling, engines, capability at pretty much everything Cons: Price

£7000-£40000 Versions: 2.7 TDV6 (‘05-’09), 3.0 TDV6 (‘09-’11), 3.0 SDV6 (‘11-’12), 4.4 V8 petrol (‘05-’07), 3.6 TDV8 (‘07-’10), 4.2 supercharged V8 (‘05-’09), 5.0 supercharged V8 (‘09-’12). Pros: Decent performance from both engines and chassis, a lot of car for your money Cons: Not as practical as a Disco, not as prestigious as a proper RR

RR Sport 2 (2013-present) The second-generation Range Rover Sport has also been on a diet to save over 400kg, just like the current daddy Range Rover, the L405. That means that even this big bruiser is relatively economical when spec’d with the SDV6 motor. Some won’t like the vulgar and flamboyant posture, while others will adhere to the smart, yet mean styling. But no one can knock the Sport for its

performance. It feels incredibly light for such a big car, and if you’ve robbed a bank and can afford the SVR version, it’s as good round a race track as it is on a green lane. The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Removing limbs is possibly the most feasible option, or wait ten years and see if the prices have come tumbling down off those high pedestals.

RR Evoque (2011-present) When the Range Rover Evoque was launched, it signalled Jaguar Land Rover’s intent on hitting the mass market. And given that the Evoque is their fastest-selling vehicle to-date, they’ve clearly done the job. That doesn’t mean it’s a hit with purists. They don’t much like the fact Victoria Beckham was involved in the designing of it, nor that it is the polar opposite to a Defender.

It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac, but it would rather not go down that route. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and because there are so many out there, they have decent residuals. Go for a five-door with the new Ingenium engine, and make it the 4WD version. The 2WD model may be eco-friendly but what is a Range Rover without four-wheel drive?

£43000-£130000 Versions: 3.0 SDV6, 4.4 SDV8, 5.0 supercharged V8, 3.0 SDV6 Hybrid. Range Rover Sport SVR 5.0 supercharged V8 (‘15-present).

Pros: Feels light considering weight, engines, almost as luxurious as its bigger brother Cons: You’ll need deep pockets

£14000-£48000 Versions: 2.2 SD4 (‘11-’15), 2.0 Si4 4cyl petrol, 2.0 TD4 (‘15-present).

Pros: Economy, handling, beats rivals off-road Cons: Not as practical as the new Discovery Sport

Evoque Convertible (2016-present) Talk about niche markets: here’s a fourwheel-drive SUV that also doubles up as a convertible – go figure. It’s not going to appeal to a great number of people, and those who do like the cut of its jib will have to contend with a driving experience that is inferior to the regular Evoque, and the likelihood of a few more head scratches regarding practicality. The only real upside is that of the

electrically-foldable roof, which does at least improve the vehicle’s exterior when slid back out of sight. You’ll also be in relatively exclusive company when owning this car, and it’s only available in the higher trim levels of the Evoque stable. All that aside, you’ll have probably the most capable and versatile convertible the world has ever seen. This is not just a soft-top for the summer.

Range Rover Velar (2017-present) And so the Range Rover family welcomes its fourth model, confidently making it the most prominent of Land Rover’s sub brands. It’s a vehicle we will be giving our driven verdict on in the very near future, but for the meantime, we do know this much: the Velar is a fine-looking craft and is based upon the same architecture as the Jaguar F-Pace. It has greater off-road ability than the

aforementioned (good for Green Oval enthusiasts) and it is available with a wide choice of engines, most of which combine good economy with usable everyday performance. The interior is Land Rover’s most advanced cabin to date, with other models expected to follow the Velar in due course. Other than that, you do pay a premium for the suave looks...

Discovery 1 (1989-1998) The earliest version of the Discovery was aimed purely at providing a middle ground between the agricultural Defender and the luxury, upper-class Range Rover. It carried much of the Defender’s capabilities, but added more refinement and a driving experience more suitable to families – but without a Range Rover price tag. Blessed with the same wonderful

Tdi engines, the Discovery saved Land Rover and hit back at offerings from other nations by being an affordable all-rounder. And that still holds true even today. Early Discovery 1s in fine condition are now classics and will continue to appreciate. We would recommend trying to find a tidy and later 300Tdi example, but watch out for body rust – the boot floor, arches and wings etc.

Discovery 2 (1998-2004) Following on from the first-generation Discovery, in 1998 Land Rover gave its family SUV some minor cosmetic tweaks and a whole new power unit in the shape of the Td5. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure any mods have been done properly. You can also buy a V8, but

the fuel bill isn’t going to be welcome, plus they’re more temporamental. Unlike on the D1, its the chassis that’s the problem, not the body. We all know that Discos make for a great tow car, and consequently many of the rear chassis on D2s have dipped their rears into the sea. Not all of them live to tell the tale... Get a later example for more creature comforts and difflocks too.

Discovery 3/4 (2004-present) The Discovery went through a dramatic revamp for its launch in 2004, but it came out the other side as one hell of a vehicle. Greatly improved in terms of power and refinement, the Disco 3 received the relatively economical 2.7 TDV6 engine (although the thirsty 4.4 V8 petrol was an option) and became the first Land Rover to be given Terrain Response. If you need one vehicle in

your life, this could be the one that ticks the most boxes at once. Be weary of maintenance costs, especially as you approach the 105,000mile/seven-year mark that means the timing belt is due – it’s a body-off job! The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines are even better, with monumental amounts of torque. Luxury has also increased significantly in later examples. A later SDV6 model is best.

£35000-£55000 Versions: TD4 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo-diesel (180hp), SD4 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo-diesel (240hp), Si4 2.0-litre 4cyl petrol (240hp). Pros: One of the very few ways you can get open-top thrills in a Land Rover Cons: Heavier, less practical, less economical and worse to drive than hard-top Evoque

£44000-£90000 Versions: D180 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo-diesel, D240 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo-diesel, D300 3.0-litre 6cyl turbo-diesel, P250 2.0-litre 4cyl petrol, P300 2.0-litre 4cyl petrol, P380 3.0-litre 6cyl petrol. Pros: Very stylish, interior, choice of engines, driven verdict soon... Cons: Could hurt the bigger Sport and L405. Prices stretch to near £100K

£700-£10000 Versions: 200Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘89-’94), 300Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘94-’98), 3.5 V8 (‘89-’93), 3.9 V8 (‘94-’98).

Pros: Almost as every bit as good as the Defender off-road, price, practicality Cons: The body rusts like it’s been doused in sea water

£1000-£6000 Versions: Td5 2.5 5cyl turbo-diesel, 4.0 V8.

Pros: Td5 power and reliability, great all-rounder, better comfort than D1, diff locks standard for ‘03 onwards (model dependent) Cons: Rear chassis crumbles like its dessert namesake

£5800-£40000 Versions: 2.7 TDV6, 4.4 V8 (‘04’09), 3.0 TDV6 (‘09-’12), 3.0 SDV6 (‘12-present).

Pros: Off-road capability, usability for every occasion, luxury on later models, torque of 3.0-litre engines Cons: Maintenance costs, air compressor on D3s, D4s not so cheap

Discovery 5 (2017-present) Launched just a couple of months ago, this latest Discovery is still yet to hit the UK roads on mass. Land Rover needed to improve economy in particular with this edition of the Disco, and having chopped 480kg from the kerbweight, it would seem their proficiency in the use of lightweight technologies is only getting better and better. We’ve yet to drive the latest Discov-

ery, but expectations are high – especially as this will be Land Rover’s most capable SUV in production. New engines look promising on paper, and Land Rover has listened to customers regarding the infotainment system. It will remain to be seen whether the changes have quenched the thirst of the critics, though. We reckon the base Sd4 model could turn out to provide all you really need.

£43500-£76000 Versions: 2.0 Sd4, 3.0 Td6, 3.0 Si6 (‘16-present).

Pros: Most technologically-advanced Land Rover to-date, keeps Discovery practicality Cons: Not many can afford one currently, easy to mistake for D Sport

Discovery Sport (2015-present) Brought in to replace the ageing Freelander 2, the Discovery Sport was the vehicle that turned the Discovery brand into a family. It has come to be so much more than a re-badged Freelander, though. For starters, the Discovery Sport has seven seats (just), drives better than a Freelander 2 and is now more refined thanks to the Ingenium Td4 engine. Land Rover is now churning out

LAND ROVER T H E E V E RY D AY C L A S S I C

substantial units of the baby Disco, now even matching the Evoque for pace as one of the fastest-selling vehicles to carry a green oval. It’s a more usable vehicle than the Evoque, though, and carries less of the feministic stigma that often surrounds the Evoque. Grab a cleverly-spec’d SE Tech for a car that can be as practical as a daddy Disco, but for a more attractive price.

£28000-£50000 Versions: SD4 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel (Jan ‘15 - Aug‘15), TD4 Ingenium 2.0 4cyl turbo-diesel (Aug ‘15 onwards).

Pros: More practical than an Evoque – and less vulgar, seven seats, still great off-road Cons: Back seats only for small mammals, price of top models
