Not all Defenders are oil burners that only lick up the thick gloop of diesel. Back in the late Nineties, several thousand miles away from the UK, a plant in South Africa was busy building the 2.8i. They’re rare, intoxicating… and the fortunate Alistair Fearnehough has one in his garage…

Discovery SVX – the ‘Ultimate’ T
Words: Graham Scott
here is news that you can now get a four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol engine in your new Discovery – but if that doesn’t get the pulse soaring then try this. Instead of that four-pot, there is a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol engine. Instead of 295bhp there is 518bhp. Instead of 295lb ft of torque there is 460lb ft. Heartbeat having a bit of a flutter yet? This is, in the company’s words, ‘the pinnacle of the Discovery family’. It is also ‘an extreme expression of all-terrain capability’. Mister Modest is clearly not at home, but as well as that muscular engine there are some special suspension tricks added by Special Vehicles Operation. For the first time a Discovery gets Hydraulic Active Roll Control, which is claimed to offer enhanced wheel articulation off-road as well as better traction. The company also says almost as an afterthought that the system also reduces body roll for more sure-footed on-road driving. We suspect that may well be the main attraction for JLR and most owners. However, to back up those 4x4 credentials, the SVX does have improved approach, departure and ramp breakover angles, with long-travel dampers fitted to the air suspension. The rims are bigger too, 815mm wheels with 275/55 R20 Goodyear Wrangler tyres. These have more sidewall so they should give better performance on soft going, particularly
as they come with a more aggressive tread pattern. And that higher sidewall height will add a smidge to the ride comfort too. It would be all too easy to dismiss this SVX as an on-road thunder wagon, but actually the engineers clearly have taken steps to improve what was already an impressive off-road package. There is an active centre diff and an electronic locking diff at the rear, working with the traction control to keep you going whatever is under the wheels. Naturally there are enough acronyms to MEGO (make my eyes glaze over): ETC, DSC, EPAS, and naturally Terrain
Response 2, Hill Descent Control and all the rest. Overall it looks a more threatening device, with the revamped lines and additions like the skid plates and an integrated winch at the back. We look forward to testing this most extreme of Discovery models, although hopefully we won’t need the winch or the recovery eyes, which are rated at six tonnes. If you get so stuck in the SVX that you need recovering you’d better change your name, have plastic surgery, abandon the family and go for the witness protection scheme before your friends find out.
Our Cars Electric
Discovery of New Kit
Words: Graham Scott
Electrifying news from Land Rover – ‘Every Land Rover Electrified from 2020’ the press release screams. So that’s it, no more diesel, no more growling V8s, just the gentle whine of electric motors in a bit over two years. With companies like Volvo having already made similar announcements, we wonder where all that electricity is going to come from, since the national grid, and the distribution network that delivers that electricity, would be absolutely unable to cope. And it takes decades to get new power stations online, once we’ve managed to stop arguing about what the source of power will be.
So we’re looking at blackouts, power outages, working by candlelight again. Isn’t the future exciting? Can’t wait for 2020. But then it turns out that’s not quite what Land Rover is saying, any more than Volvo is. Dr Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover put it carefully: ‘Every new JLR model line will be electrified from 2020. We will introduce a portfolio of electrified products across our model range, embracing fully electric, plug-in hybrid, and mild hybrid vehicles.’ So you’ll still be able to get an oil burner or a petrol engine, but somewhere in that model’s line up there will be some element of electrification, even
if it’s just a small amount of energy recovery from the brakes etc. being fed back into the system. Although of course, next year the company will unveil the Jaguar I-Pace, a pure electric SUV, engineered and built to that end from the earliest design stage. The performance SUV looks amazing in concept form, and we look forward to seeing it in the exotic metal. And we certainly look forward to being able to continue buying JLR machines with whatever range of motive power is being offered. Just a shame, if this carries on, that we’ll then be driving home with no streetlights to a house lit by candles.
Jaguar Land Rover is having some success with its petrol version of what was the diesel 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium engine. Not bad timing either, given that the world seems to be falling out of love with diesel. And now you can have the petrol engine under the shiny bonnet of your new Discovery. For those who have trouble remembering numbers, it’s quite simple: 295. That’s the amount of bhp available as well as the amount of lb ft of torque on offer. With a twin-scroll turbocharger, there’s plenty of grunt low down as well as higher up the rev range, to suit that ground-covering ability of the latest Discovery. Move from under the bonnet to inside the luxury SUV and you’ll find some more upgrades
on offer, including a new Touch Pro infotainment system on all models, working through the 10in touchscreen. There is also now 4G Wi-Fi on SE trim and above, giving you the ability to have eight mobile devices working on the move – your children will love this and you might too. On HSE and HSE Luxury you’ll also get as standard a 12.3in Interactive Driver Display, a stateof-the-art instrument cluster with amazing 3D graphics which can be personalised by the driver. There’s even second-generation head-up display technology available and, for the first time, there is the option of keeping the cabin air even cleaner with cabin air ionisation. Breathe deeply of that smell of success in the new Discovery.

Lost in Leicestershire
H
Words: Alan Kidd
idden away in a quiet corner of Leicestershire, a yard full of old Land Rovers is looking for a new home. Assembled over the course of many years by Nat Smith, an enthusiast who’s made a living out of buying and selling real-world classic cars, the collection is made up mainly of Range Rovers – though it also includes Discoverys, Series Land Rovers and other trinkets with tales. As with every collection, there are jewels in the crown. In this case, the undoubted star of the show is a 109” Series III whose overall condition bears out the fact that it has just 5000 miles on the clock. Having been stored for
many years in a barn with the wind and rain blowing at it from the front, it’s had a new bulkhead – but its tyres and seats are still original and, Nat says, the passenger’s footwell has never had a boot on it. A difficult claim to back up, but its condition certainly bears this out. There’s also an early four-door Range Rover, registered on 1 January 1982, and an 88” Series II soft-top from 1961 – one of the last to be built before the Series IIA was introduced. Across the yard from these, we spotted a Rangey from the early 1990s, which Nat told us is has a current MOT, making it one of the vehicles in the collection which could be bought and driven away. That can’t be said for the majority, however. This is, by and large, a collec-
tion of restoration projects – in particular, a line-up of five two-door Range Rovers, in various states of disrepair, look like a treasure trove for someone with the time and skill to return them to their original glory. One, we noticed, has been modified with a Scorpion Racing lift kit, though we wouldn’t expect that to survive the restoration process. Not that Nat has any intention of letting them go for pennies. ‘I don’t want anyone offering me £200 for them,’ he told us. ‘These are two-doors. I paid £1850 for one of them myself.’ Prices are on application, but safe to say he’s a man who knows what he’s looking at. You really need to know what you’re looking at to be able to identify some of the vehicles (or things that used
to be vehicles) sitting around in Nat’s yard. Although we could certainly spot what’s possibly the best of the Discoverys, at least from a collector’s point of view – a two-door whose G-prefix registration plate marks it out as being from the first year of production. Sadly, this is already spoken for. If you’re after the sort of Disco that can be pressed back into service as an off-roader or even a daily drive, there’s also a choice of V8 and 300Tdi models sat in the yard. Next to them is another Range Rover, whose K-plate dates it in the last couple of years of Classic production, which Nat says would pass the MOT test as it stands. This is a strange, wide-ranging collection of old vehicles which em-
bodies perfectly the old saying that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Some of the vehicles here might look like scrappers – but if you know what you’re looking at, you won’t have any problem spotting the enormous potential locked inside them. That Series III is the undisputed star, and rightly so when you see the astronomical sums people are willing to pay for a leafer in original condition, but scratch just a little way below the surface and you’ll find no end of possibilities in this fascinating little corner of Leicestershire. Nat Smith can be contacted on 07947 539173. If you’re interested in his vehicles, he asks you to call rather than texting.

Can I have a word...
O
h, hello there – you just caught me on a coffee break and I thought I’d take the chance to see what was on my Facebook news feed. There’s all sorts of crazy stuff on there nowadays: animals that can talk, memories from last year when you used to have hair, and then occasionally something special like your next Land Rover project. That’s what happened with Shabs Piercy and how he came to own the Series II which you can feast upon over on Page 22. It’s a real tastefully tweaked gem of a machine. Now Shabs is known to the Land Rover fraternity for he is the brains behind Syncro Gearboxes and he was merely looking for a side project to satisfy personal Green Oval needs. Dan Goude, who you can read about on Page 10 following his conclusion of the eBay Car Challenge, is on the other end of the scale. He too has always liked Land Rovers, but putting his Series IIA, ‘Bertha’ back on the road had been his goal for over two decades. The point is that whether you work with Land Rovers or simply on them, we all get that same feeling of contentment while we’re around them. And as Dan proves (albeit with a bit of a help in hand from eBay), setting yourself a deadline and knuckling down to finish that resto you’ve been lingering on for 12 months is just a case of getting yourself in that workshop. If you’re new to this and have been contemplating getting a little Landy to play with, all Dan, Shabs and I can say is, just have a go. We promise that you won’t look back. GBLRS Hots Up for November
T
he weather may have turned pants, but that doesn’t mean that you should stay at home and walk around in yours. No, we give you reason to rejoice – and reclothe – as this November the Great British Land Rover Show returns for its sixth instalment. And the show promises to knock you for six and all, with an extensive list of attractions waiting for you to explore. With doors opening at 10am on Sunday 26 November, you’ll be exposed to the finest Green Oval show on the calendar, safely under the covers of Stoneleigh Park’s accommodating show halls. Headline sponsors, Rimmer Bros, will be bringing a myriad of Land Rover parts and accessories along from their vast collection, while prior to that you’ll be walking through the Land Rover Walkway sponsored by Lancaster Insurance, filled with fascinating Green Oval machines from present day and decades gone by. Should you wish to venture outside, the All Wheel Drive Club will be marshalling the challenging 2.4-mile offroad course, where you can put your Land Rover through its paces, before
popping inside the halls to buy any spare components that you now need to replace. But then as it’s the winter months and all you can do is fiddle about with your Landy inside the garage, you won’t mind one little bit. Show partners, NWS Motor Services, will be hosting live workshop tutorials on a range of Land Rover power plants, while there will also be a chance for you – and the kids – to see the real life Landy from Veronica Lamond’s hit children’s tale. As always, there will be designated Land Rover-only parking where your Land Rover can be an attraction in
itself, while naturally there will be the biggest and best names in the Land Rover industry packed into the show venue ready to supply you with their latest products. And as Christmas will only be around the corner, maybe Santa will arrange the acquisition for you… All this and more will be on display, with new features being added over the next couple of months. But in the meantime, tickets will cost you £7.50 per person in advance, with prebooked tickets for the off-road course just £10. To book tickets and find out more information on the show, visit greatbritishlrshow.com
Eastnor Explorer
I
t’s quite a simple idea at one level. Land Rovers have been used for some of the most extreme and remote expeditions throughout the world, and quite a lot of early preparation work was carried out at Eastnor Castle. So, the thinking goes, why not let Land Rover owners get a taste of what it entails to crank up the skill levels necessary to take on a serious expedition. The answer is the Eastnor Explorer course, where you can slide about in the wheel ruts of vehicles and teams that went on to compete in the Camel Trophy or the later G4 Challenge.
There are in fact three expeditions on offer, these two, plus one inspired by the team of students from Oxford and Cambridge who drove their Series Is from London to Singapore. That’s a fair range of inspiration. Imagine being able to quite literally drive on the same estate as all those Camel Trophy and G4 teams, learning some of the same skills. Those were serious, extremely challenging events, and the training reflected that – and you can get a taste of it. If you’re thinking this is going to be just a pale imitation of the real thing, a gentle drive round the Eastnor Castle
Estate, then think again. Obviously off-road driving is at the heart of the programme, but the fact that they teach you how to reconnoitre the route ahead tells you it won’t be that easy – so, how deep is that water then? Best find out before you stick the front wheels in, and some of the holes at Eastnor are seriously deep. And you’ll be taught reconnaissance, bridge building, rut extraction and spade techniques – by now you should be getting the picture that you’re not going to just be sitting inside the vehicle all day. Mud may be involved, probably about your person, hopefully only on the outside. There are three one-day courses you can string together if you wish, and you’ll be taught serious skills by serious people. It should also be serious fun. Cost is £325 per driver per day, with passengers costing £95. You’ll need to be in a pair or a trio, and they’ll get seven hours of tuition, plus of course some decent lunch and refreshment – you’re not too far removed from civilisation. If you fancied following in some famous tyre tracks then either call 0333 733 3003 or book it here: www.eastnor. landroverexperience.co.uk

Rent-a-Tent I f you’ve ever thought about extending your adventures beyond a basic camping trip to wet Wales or even your back garden, then there is a fair chance you’ve considered a roof tent as a necessary purchase for that planned trip to the Outback, the Serengeti, or wherever you’ve been banging on about to the other half. 4x4 Overlander is a firm advocate of trying something before you buy, and they want to make sure you get the exact product to suit your needs. Which is why the company has launched a new tent rental service designed to provide you with that exact opportunity. There’s all sorts of roof tents, Oztents and awnings available for trialling, and naturally with 4x4 Overlander, these products are only going to be the best around, ladies and gentlemen.
9
Now even if you do use their new rental service, it doesn’t mean you’re committed to buying a tent from the chaps at 4x4 Overlander. It might be that you’ll only use one every so often, in which case they keep the prices attractive so you’ll be happy to rent with them again. Here’s the thing, though – should you like what you’ve lived in during your initial testing, you can use 50% of your rental fee towards buying the actual tent itself, providing it’s done within 12 months of renting it out. It sounds good, and now that they’ve built a separate website for the rental side of the business, you’ll easily find what you’re looking for – whether it’s a short-term rental or a longterm investment, 4x4 Overlander is happy to let you decide. R
emember Bertha? Of course you do, she’s the 1964 Series IIA that Dan Goude was restoring as part of the 2017 eBay Car Challenge. And if your short-term memory is going then that’s the challenge where eBay gave three complete amateurs £4000 to spend on parts and accessories bought through, surprise, surprise, eBay to get their pride and joy back from the brink. As well as the Land Rover, there is a 1974 VW campervan and a 1967 Alfa Romeo Duetto being restored by their owners, but it’s Dan and Bertha we’re focusing on of course. Ex-military Bertha had been off the road for 20 years and Dan had to pull the vehicle apart from ‘bumper to bonnet’. Those of you experienced at restoring Land Rovers will give a hollow laugh when you hear that he
‘encountered more problems than he expected’. Surprise – there was rot everywhere. Who’d have thought? So that alone added 150 hours to the build time. You really do have to take your hat off to Dan because he buckled down and got the work done, even though after working a series of 16-hour days he admits he was close to ‘losing the plot’. But the vehicle is now restored and he’s driving it every day. And after what was occasionally something of a nightmare, it’s great to hear that ‘she drives like a dream – exactly like she did when I first bought her’. So it was worth it then? ‘I’ve put my heart and soul into this car, and it feels personal because I’ve put my stamp on it. It’s great to have her back in one piece and I also have my life back too!’ laughs Dan. As you’d expect, Dan is rather grateful for the opportunity eBay has given him, and while the money came
in useful for parts and panels, it’s the smaller things that people forget about that also needed sorting. ‘Even buying new tools was made easier, and doing a project of this scale, there’s no end of equipment that you realise you haven’t got,’ says Dan. ‘Although I’ve finished the eBay Car Challenge, I’m pretty sure I’m not finished with Bertha – you’re never entirely done with a Land Rover.’ But at least Bertha is now a sight for sore eyes and as she’s back on the road, that’s exactly where Dan plans to use her.

Wearable Technical This rather casual looking jacket is actually packed with clever stuff which certainly earns it the title of ‘Land Rover Driver’s Technical Jacket’. It’s from the official merchandise suppliers, Hobson Industries, and is a classic blouson shape, all a bit French then, and possibly a touch louche. The repellent outer shell – it repels water among other things – has waterproof seams, and is made of waxed cotton canvas with waxed leather trim, so it’s no surprise that it has a Barbour/ Land Rover cotton tartan lining. On the back of the shoulder you’ll find the Land Rover motif subtly picked out so it doesn’t scream out in a vulgar sort of way. This waterproof chap’s jacket is £52.50 and would be a wise addition to the gentleman’s wardrobe as winter draws on. www.hobsonindustries.co.uk

What’s Wrong? Your Land Rover is not well. But what exactly is wrong with it/him/her? (Other genders are available.) One way to diagnose the illness is to plug in the new Lynx Evo Diagnostics Interface. This Lynx product may not make you smell attractive to young members of the opposite sex (although of course ‘opposite’ is a relative term here and implies no binary judgement), but it might just be able to play doctor and say what’s up and suggest a remedy. What does it do then? It ‘provides full servicing and in-depth diagnostic capability for all Land Rover models from 1990 through to the current day. It is ideal for the workshop and the home user.’ Now you know. You make the display show numeric or graphics, and it can show fault codes, clear those fault codes, display live data, handle programming, service reset and a whole lot more. The software, compatible with iOS and Android mobile devices, has apps which you can download from the Apple App Store or Android Play

Mind your Elbows So who thought that the design of the Defender cabin would be suitable for normal humans? Over the decades, owners have got used to only really being comfy with the window down, leaving enough room for the errant elbow. But with autumn upon us, adding frostbite to the elbow seems a rather retrograde step, so it took some tough Yorkshire folk to design a simple and comfy solution.
Behold the MUD Armrest. It’s made by MUD UK and it’s an armrest, you can’t quibble with the description. This was an accessory they devised because they needed it, on a long road trip in the US. It couldn’t be simpler. You just slide the comfy, moulded armrest into place between the door trim and the glass, and that’s it. A perfect place to rest your weary elbow as the miles unfold. Obviously, if you
don’t need it or need to do lots of wheel twiddling in town, you can just slide it out of place just as easily – and it’ll fit in your cubby box until your next journey. Simple solutions are often the best, and this seems a practical advance for those with dodgy elbows. They’ll fit any model with one-piece doors, and they come left or right handed, at £24 each. You’ll find them here: www.mudstuff.co.uk

A smart charge sounds a good idea – shame the Light Brigade didn’t have one at the Battle of Balaclava. However, the new RSC612 from Ring faces up to a similar problem. In this case it’s troublesome batteries, in the Light Brigade’s case it was the Russian artillery batteries that caused the problem. Hmm, I was going to try to work in a Lord Cardigan gag but I think we’ve pushed this far enough without bringing knitwear into it. Although it’s tempting isn’t it? Especially as we have Lord Cardigan, and his overall commander was Lord Raglan. But no, instead let’s focus on the Multi-Stage Fully Automatic Smart Charger from Ring. If your battery is in any way not performing properly, something which is more likely when the weather turns evil, then this clever little box of tricks is the solution.
For starters, so to speak, it auto chargers, thus applying the fastest charge based on battery size. But it does a lot more. The box contains diagnostic tools so it doesn’t just charge the battery it puts it to the question, forcing it to perform to see if in any way it is below par. It can identify and measure issues with
the battery such as the cranking performance when cold, plus it can find out if the alternator is charging up the battery properly, and it can measure the voltage drop when the engine starts up to see if the battery is fully healthy. Also, and this is one of those solutions for one of the world’s most annoying problems, it has a memory saver function so if you do need to change the battery it allows vehicle and audio settings to be remembered. No wonder this RSC612 has won awards, quite a few of them in fact. So to find out more, you should charge over to the Ring website, which is here: www.ringautomotive.com

With autumn upon us that means winter isn’t far behind, and it’s then that some 4x4 owners tend to let their vehicle’s off-road ability go to their heads. They like to go out when it’s snowy, caning about to show all those drivers in normal cars what they’re missing. It’s fun, to be sure, to watch a BMW spin its back wheels as it struggles to get up even a mildly snowy or icy incline, only for you to then overtake effortlessly and disappear over the crest. One problem. While the driven axles allow you to keep going, it’s the tyres that determine how quickly you can stop. And a big Defender moving at speed on ice or snow is just a toboggan if the tyres aren’t up to retardation. So maybe now isn’t a bad time to think about some winter tyres, and there’s a new one from Cooper Tires. You may not be surprised to hear it’s the Cooper Discoverer Winter. Made in the UK, it’s specifically built for mid to full-size SUVs, so that’s your Landy then. I could chunter on about coupled-silica tread compound, circumferential snow groove technology and 3D micro-gauge siping, but A) it would probably bore most people and B) I’d doubtless get a fact wrong and there’s bound to be someone out there reading who’s a world expert in snow groove technology and they’d be obliged to put me right, at length. So instead we’ll focus on the fact that the tyres were extensively tested not in the UK, where they’re built, but in Arctic Falls in Sweden and Test World in Finland, both places that know about snow and how to drive on it – and stop on it. They’re good on ice and wet roads too, so these Discoverer Winter tyres, designed for SUVs like yours, should deliver on grip, handling and the all-important braking. You’ll find out more about them, much more about them, if you slide over to www.coopertire.co.uk

Time for T The array of LED lights on the market is really quite dazzling these days, but UK manufacturer Lazer Lamps seems to be consistently a leading light. The company has now upgraded its T range of off-road LED spotlights and has a new leader, a 28 LED light bar. The new lights are more contemporary to look at and have a usefully lower profile all round. The reduction in size has been countered by an actual increase in lumen capacity. With changes to the reflector system, this extra power is better harnessed into a Drive beam pattern that means more distance and more spread rather than more of a hotspot just in front. Lazer Lamps claims even
reliability is further enhanced as well, so it’s hard to see how this isn’t a winner, particularly when you remember that the lights are guaranteed for five years against water and dust getting in and there’s a lifetime guarantee on the ‘unbreakable’ lens. Just don’t feel the need to test that lens guarantee. www.lazerlamps.com

There’s a wise saying that luxuries very quickly become necessities. Bearmach obviously had this in mind when the company produced its new range of LED lights. Given the flexibility endowed by the LED bulbs, Bearmach has made good use of that and produced a range of lights in all manner of shapes and sizes from curved to round to bars. As Bearmach says: ‘These high-efficiency lights will become a necessity not just an accessory’. To find out how these luxurious necessities could benefit your Land Rover, go to www. bearmach.com and see the light.

Everything in one place. One-stop shop. We tend to like these things as they’re easy and hassle-free. And wouldn’t it be great if everything Land Rover related could be found in one publication, (aside from this publication) where you can browse all the potential parts and accessories one may need for their Land Rover? That definitely applies to the new Rimmer Bros catalogue. It’s their first dedicated Land Rover and Range Rover accessory catalogue, with 200 pages dedicated solely to all things Solihull. Whether it’s genuine, OEM or aftermarket products you’re after – depending on whether your wallet will allow – there should be something here for you, whether you have an original Series I (unlikely) or the latest brand new Discovery (sadly also unlikely). It also covers Range Rovers from Classic to Evoque. The catalogue brings together all the best stuff from manufacturers and distributors from around the world, including a lot of kit to increase the off-road protection and performance of your Land Rover or Range Rover. Along with that is a rich swathe of other gear, whether it’s interior upgrades, performance enhancements, exhausts, LED conversions – you name it, it’s here. So this is just the publication for you to pore over one evening, preferably with a beer or single malt to hand, while you envisage fitting it all to your vehicle. Well, perhaps not all of it, but which bits would work best? To find out you should go to www. rimmerbros.co.uk or give them a call on 01522 568000 to get your free copy.

The Alternative Defender
Think Defender: think diesel. Or at least that’s what you’ve become accustomed to. But, evidently it is possible to be a true petrolhead, even while holding the keys to Solihull’s finest Words and Pictures: Mike Trott
D
is for Defender – but ‘D’ is also for diesel. Coincidence? I doubt it. You see, when you try to imagine a scenario involving the Lode Lane legend, such as that memory of when you took your Defender to conquer Bastard Lane on that Welsh laning tour, if you had to add in a musical score, it’ll unlikely be the smooth strum of a petrol motor. Diesel and Defender is an item, whether you like it or not. Just as in the same way you need to accept that Mila Kunis is already married. Just because the pretty girl talks nicely to you in the Jim Beam advert - honestly. Anyway, Defenders and diesel – that’s it, end of story. Or is it?
Well, some of you looking exasperated with my claim will be yelling furiously (tone it down a little, you’re scaring Fido), and shouting: ‘What about the NAS 90?’ Gold star for you, because yes, there is a V8 Defender that was sold across the pond. However, did you hear about the South African Defender, the one with the BMW-derived 2.8-litre petrol unit? It’s OK if you haven’t, there is no shame in this, and you certainly don’t need to be lying there crying on that shrink’s couch. There is a reason why you may not have encountered this version of Land Rover, and that goes for anywhere, not just on a first-hand basis. For starters, a bit of history is needed.
Back in the late Nineties, Land Rover was ruled by the German might of BMW. And to appease the southern African market a BMW petrol engine was installed within the Defender. So, from 1996 until the year 2000, Solihull sent CKD kits over to the Rosslyn plant near Pretoria and South Africa assembled a Defender labelled the 2.8i. Production numbers aren’t readily available, but estimates narrow the number of these Defenders down to approximately 1400 units, around 650 of which were 90s. Very few were made and even fewer were exported over to the UK – but this one, was. You may struggle to come across a 2.8i Defender but, with this one at least, you won’t miss it once you’re

in the vicinity. Alistair Fearnehough owns this vibrant irregularity and he has done so for over ten years. ‘It was first registered by the Forsdicks dealer in South Africa on 2 September 1998,’ says Alistair, nodding in the Defender’s direction as it basks at the top of the field. ‘The Defender’s first owner imported it here through Rogers of Bedford, sometime between September and May 1999, before it was sold to its second owner, a captain, in the August of 2000.’ The captain, who owned the 90 before Alistair, clearly travelled well, with service records pinpointing intervals in Surrey, Somerset, North Yorkshire and even Madrid. And eleven years ago in October of ’06, after 133,934 kilometres (or 83,222 miles), this special from the South settled in Derbyshire with Alistair. ‘I reverted the registration back to original,’ says Alistair, with previously ‘L90 MUD’ showing on each end of the Defender. ‘It hasn’t gone as far under my watch either, as it’s a second vehicle and I tend to work from home a fair bit. So apart from a couple of trips to the French Alps, it’s had to make do with Derbyshire!’ It shows, with the odometer now revealing Alistair to have added less than 3000 miles a year since he bought it. Not that he minds driving it, of course. ‘The car drives very well and certainly goes like a train for a Defender. And that engine sounds absolutely fantastic with the stainless exhaust system,’ says Alistair. I’ll tell you about some of the other items on Alistair’s 90 in a second, but first a bit more info on that 2.8i engine. Its proper name was the BMW M52, a straight-six, 24-valve unit that also found its way into the BMW 328i, 528i (notice a pattern) and 728i. even had a place in the sporty Z3. To be housed within a Defender, though, it needed to have plenty of power, to cope with the extra weight. Fortunately, 192hp was on tap. Thus, following production ending of the V8 Defender, the South Africans still had a petrol-powered Defender. Low-down torque was rubbish, but do you think Alistair gives a damn? There are claims that the 2.8i Defender could reach 60mph from a standstill in just 9.3 seconds, while later versions were restricted to 100mph. A Defender. Restricted. To a ton. It’s incredible, in fact it’s almost as incredible as this Defender looks. Much of that is down to Alistair’s brother-in-law, Chris, who carried out a major renovation on the 90 just over three years ago. Chris actually worked on developing and delivering the Land Rover apprentice scheme until recently and, needless to say, Alistair has found his knowledge very useful around the garage. Even Britpart paid him a visit so he could assist with the latest diagnostics program under the Lynx Evo app, now available on your smartphone. There’s not many of these

2.8i Defenders around, so they had to call someone! Anyway, the refurb was pretty extensive, incorporating a full respray into this exotic yellow (it was Camel Trophy yellow when Chris first had it), fitting galvanised parts like the bumper, and generally renewing much of the Defender’s tired self. Seals were replaced, the suspension uprated, wheels refurbished, front discs drilled and Waxoyl presented to the underside. The entire vehicle has an air of quality about it, befitting of that tuneful motor and its top-end nature. I think it looks epic in the yellow and black – more Bumblebee of the Autobots than Kevin of the Minions. Personal choice, I know. And that is the same with whether you like your Defender with a diesel or a petrol engine. Like many things, it depends what you will use your possession for. If you want to off-road your Defender every weekend, then this is never going to suit your needs. If like Alistair you enjoy a few more revs and fancy the occasional road trip, perhaps the 2.8i Defender was made for you. Anyhow, I’ll leave you to your search. Might take a while to find one.

hen you work with Land Rovers, by which I mean you mend, fettle, spanner, hammer and coax them into being better machines than when they first reach you, the thought of a side project working on a Green Oval for your own personal satisfaction might make you want to seek out the nearest brown paper bag and pour your reaction into it. If you were a funeral director, you may get home from a hard day at the ‘office’ and wish to view something a little more upbeat than Midsomer Murders. Likewise, if you’ve spent all day rebuilding the gearbox on a 109”, welding up the footwell of your 88” may be the last thing on your mind. With Land Rovers, however, it’s feasible that you could own a variety of them and fancy taking something for a spin which you haven’t encountered at work for a while. Or maybe that’s just a load of codswallop and you just see what floats up your Facebook newsfeed. Shabs Piercy did. If you’re into your Land Rovers and particularly the Green Oval scene, you may well have heard of Syncro Gearboxes, a company that has been stirring more than just a few cogs in the last few years. Shabs is the brains
behind the operation and has developed the revolutionary Slickshift for a variety of Land Rovers, now being sold under the Syncroworks Developments brand.
‘I’ve had my fun spannering with it and putting the finishing touches to it’ But while Shabs is busy creating a legacy in his workshop in the day, for a while he was hoping for something that would give him a path back to
a simpler time; a route back to Land Rover ownership of a specific kind. ‘Around four or five years ago I had a Series III,’ starts Shabs, as we walk around a vehicle he clearly has a fondness for. ‘It was a bit of a hack; something to use and abuse, and then I sold it and regretted it, almost immediately.’ Since that moment, Shabs has found himself focusing on the business and finding little time in between to ‘get back on the horse’, as it were. However, last year an opportunity arose that simply had to be seized, and it came from a quick scroll on his Facebook newsfeed. A 1960 Series II sparkled back through Shabs’ phone screen - or maybe it was just the brightness was up too much, seeing as the vehicle had been unloved and left to wilt for the previous seven years. Either way, the spec sheet impressed Shabs and seemingly the Series II had all the components in place – this was a project that just needed a helping hand to get the Land Rover to the finish line. Originally a 2.25-litre petrol model, the Series II came to Shabs with a more powerful 200Tdi unit in situ, a galvanised chassis and a tax-exempt status just to sweeten the deal.

Above: Not only has Shabs’s Series II received a cosmetic makeover on the outside, but it’s been given a pampering inside too... or should that be padding? Either way, the Acoustic Mat System from Wright Off-Road works wonders
‘It was a side project just too good to miss,’ smiles Shabs unashamedly. ‘A cosmetic makeover was all it needed, so we resprayed it and fitted the new lights and numberplate, added the Slickshift and Wright OffRoad Acoustic Mat System – and now look at it!’ If ever you were searching for a vehicle that needed to look the part of being a classic motor, but had the underpinnings to stand the test of time so that you could use it like a Green Oval machine should be, can you honestly think of a better combination than this Series II? Here is a stunning motor that harks back to the day when it was first built, when Land Rover itself was only 12 years old, and yet it boasts more power and torque than standard, from an engine which is widely regarded as Land Rover’s finest; the chassis is as solid now as it will be in 15 years’ time and the additional touches Shabs has installed mean it will be even easier on your ears and your wrist. ‘We deal with a hell of a lot of Series stuff at work, so it wasn’t so much that I was missing being around them, it was more a case of missing being an owner of one,’ explains Shabs. around,’ continues Shabs. ‘Then when I got to the age I could start to drive I went towards the Mini scene, classic Minis, and I did that to death. ‘Me and Kim later bought a 110 Station Wagon and that got me straight back into the Land Rovers. It became a spur for the business, if I’m honest. Syncro as a business is very much built on the enthusiasm we have for Land Rovers. We do all the shows and do it more as a social exercise.’ Tongues will have been getting their exercise at the most recent Great British Land Rover Show, when Shabs brought his Series II along to rightfully receive some admiring looks. But since that journey to Stoneleigh, Shabs and his empire have relocated to Mid Wales. And, as much

as a Series II blends in with Welsh countryside, this vehicle isn’t fitting Shabs’ busy schedule. ‘I have a TDCi vehicle of my own, I have my 101 – which needs some attention – plus various other vehicles, and here I just have no use for the Series II. I haven’t the time to use it as it should be,’ says Shabs regretfully. Consequently, the Series II is now on the market and awaiting the arrival of a new owner to give it the driving time it deserves. ‘I’ve had my fun spannering with it and putting the finishing touches to it, but now someone else can have the pleasure of driving it,’ says Shabs, as he pats the Landy’s front wing. With a core so strong, combined with those retro design lines, this is a vehicle that deserves to be driven. For someone who is the opposite of Shabs, who prefers the feel of a Series motor when it’s bobbing up and down on a rural B-road, rather than the feel of a piston assembling in their hands, the opportunity to acquire this Series II could be just too good to miss. Finding the Land Rover that is right for you can be a lengthy challenge – and even then there is no guarantee it will exist. For Matthew Fairbrass, converting his Discovery 2 was the only way he could drop this bugbear of a search

nly last month in The Landy But it seems that Green Ovals from we saw someone’s brainstorm decades ago aren’t the only vehicles of a vision become reality undergoing transformations in a bid when we met Paloma, a Series to fulfill the very specific criteria of IIA Double Cab that had been fashtheir owners. While you can appreciate a Series ioned from two Series Land Rovers Land Rover having certain drawbacks to give the owner what they believed – perhaps the lack of any safety (or in to be the perfect Land Rover for their some cases seatbelts), and performance very tailored requirements. Below: Longranger 4x4 provide fibreglass conversion kits, while Matthew added the timber
that puts the horse and cart firmly back into contention for your transportation needs – the Discovery has always been a four-wheel drive option that you can depend on. If the Discovery were a baseball player, it would only score home runs. Or would it? Several years ago, Matthew Fairbrass picked up a relatively ordinary 2000 Discovery 2. It had a Td5 engine and a manual gearbox, and only has 92,000 miles on the clock today, meaning it was and still is good for its age. This was reinforced through Matthew’s careful ownership of the Discovery, with it being given the Waxoyl treatment from new and it continuing under the Fairbrass era. Around three years ago, however, there was something missing from the Discovery and the situation just wasn’t right for Matthew. ‘As a work vehicle, the Defender is wonderful, but not too comfortable to live with,’ explains Matthew. ‘I carry out tree surgery and landscaping, so the back seats of the Discovery were
pulled out and it was used as a bit of a van. I could have done with a pick-up, but didn’t want a Defender.’ Plus, Matthew wanted something a bit more than just a practical loadspace for his work. The Discovery playing the role of a van just wouldn’t cut it, but Matthew soon saw an opportunity to fix the issue, thanks to Longranger 4x4. ‘I could have gone down the Japanese route, but that would bring me out in a rash!’ laughs Matthew. ‘And of course, we all like a project. Longranger can supply you with fibreglass kits, so I stuck that on the back of the Disco. It’s finding something on the market to fill a purpose,’ declares Matthew. Now as you’d expect, you have to be serious with the conversions of
Land Rovers, you can’t just go in there fornicating about. You need to have a plan and organise yourself before you start chopping and changing stuff. However, with Longranger 4x4, the headaches of the planning have been taken care of already. Matthew says, ‘Clinton at Longranger was very good. He’s made the kit so easy to use. He’s spent time doing all the hard work and figuring out how all of it goes together so that it’s a simple case of applying it once you get it.’ So, conversion complete, drop what you’re doing and please may I now introduce, ahem, the Discovery Td5 Dropside Pick Up. It just oozes usefulness, doesn’t it? Apparently, the utilising of timber and galvanised fittings

Above: It’s not all work with Matthew. Under the bonnet lies a remapped Td5 unit with silicon hoses and the absence of any EGR valve made it all very easy to install and, as a bonus, there’s no issue with the DVLA as the chassis remains untouched. As Matthew rightfully points out, an off-the-shelf body, in comparison, would be considerably more expensive. With this method, we have to say fair play to Fairbrass as he’s got himself a super practical vehicle, all with seemingly little hassle. And it drives like an ordinary Td5 Discovery, too, according to Matthew. Now come on, Matthew, we know it’s not just the Dropside rear that makes this vehicle a little different. from the norm. There are noticeable alterations under the bonnet. Firstly the ECU has been remapped and an AlliSport intercooler has been installed, but there are also silicon hoses, a performance air filter and raised air intake to be found, plus the removal of the Td5’s EGR valve. The BFG Mud-Terrains feature XS Boost alloys and hub adapters, which hide the uprated springs and gas shocks sitting behind. It’s got everything you need, this vehicle, including front and rear winches, tow bars, LED spotlights and flashing beacons, all helped to run through two batteries. Even the interior is admirable with its half-leather seats and ebony headlining. ‘I’ve owned every version of a Land Rover you can think of, right through from the Series I,’ Matthew divulges. ‘It’s in my blood.’ We hear this a lot, but we know how true it is.
‘I had a soft dash Range Rover Classic, but unfortunately had to part with it. I now have a hard dash model, though, and I love it. We all love to tinker, to make our Land Rover even more individual and to make it our own. To carry out the conversion, I wasn’t on it every single day, but it probably took a few weeks to perform the main transformation.’ Now the Discovery has the dropside body, it has taken its practicality to a whole new level. Worth noting as well that this new body fits to the original mounts – so, should removal be needed, it won’t be like starting from scratch. ‘It makes the vehicle a reliable, trustworthy workhorse, as competent
as any Defender and in my opinion, more comfortable,’ continues Matthew. ‘And the best work vehicle I’ve ever had? The 130 Tipper, without doubt. I’ve run several of those.’ Maybe the 130 still takes the title for the ultimate workhorse in Matthew’s life – but to use on a regular basis and on the road, not just a building site or farmyard, the unique dropside pick-up he has created from a standard Disco 2 must surely run it close. Once again the Land Rover community delivers. If you’re not completely satisfied with what Solihull provide you with, the chances are another individual has had the very same thought process.

Spending your days on the Isle of Jersey, soaking up the rays and living the life of leisure, is one way to pass your time – and this is exactly what this Range Rover Classic did for more than 25 years
B
y the time you pick up this newspaper and settle down for an entertaining dose of Land Rover medicine – maybe to wash away the tiring day you’ve had at work or the headache that has developed because the kids can’t decide what shape of dinosaur they want for tea – the summer will likely be a distant memory. It’s hard enough trying to remember something that never happened, but even more so when October is upon us, your kids have been back at school for an eternity and you’re pondering whether a static caravan in wet and windy Wales should even be considered as a holiday for the approaching half-term respite. Now before I leave you needing to seek a therapist, let’s forget all the gloom and think back to that twoweek slot in the middle of summer – you remember, right? That brief holiday you had where you went somewhere mildly warm and the only
traffic was Pedro of the Mediterranean pedalling his vegetable cart into town? Spain is always popular, you know, because they have the same English stuff over there as we do. Maybe you’re a little more upmarket, in which case you may still be donning a brown tinge provided by the Algarve, or perhaps you’re a more adventurous type and have given some of the new upcoming destinations a shot, like
Serbia and Bulgaria. One place I can recommend, though, if you haven’t been already, is Jersey. And you will too after seeing what we’ve got lined up for you here. Nick Oddy has recently become the owner of a Range Rover, and more specifically this Range Rover Classic. Considering it’s his first ever Land Rover, he has done very well for himself, as he will now explain.

We’re on Facebook: www.facebook.com/thelandyuk ‘The Range Rover you see here is one of the last 3.5s, built in January 1989,’ says Nick. ‘It lived in Jersey and spent the first 25 years of its life there. I guess that’s why the mileage is so low on it, having only just clocked over 60,000, and the chassis is really clean too.’ For the 1990 model year, the Range Rover was to use a bored-out version of the Rover V8, moving to a 3.9-litre displacement with electronic fuel injection (EFI). Nick’s Range Rover also carries EFI technology, first emerging on the Range Rover in 1986. For a first-time buyer of a Green Oval vehicle, Nick has found himself a fine example of what remains Solihull’s most luxurious export. But for Nick it could have been rather different. ‘I was a passenger in a P38 and that’s what made me start looking at Range Rovers,’ smiles Nick. ‘The classic looks appealed to me, but when I drove a P38 I wasn’t impressed, so I started to look at the Range Rover Classics.’ Unsurprisingly, more than a few of the Classics Nick went to view had seen better days, but then he came across this Jersey joy last November. ‘I saw this example and knew within 60 seconds I’d buy it. The whole experience is all very new to me, so I wasn’t quite sure what I was looking for. Originally I was just looking for a green one, that’s all I knew really!’ Luckily, someone with considerable knowledge of the Range Rover family was just around the corner to help guide our friend into this bewildering culture. Nick stumbled across Paul Atkinson at the NEC last year, while visiting the Classic Car Show.
29
Above: Nick wasn’t looking for a particular Classic, but he’s ended up with a fine example. He’s bagged a late 3.5-litre V8, meaning it uses the electronic fuel injection also found on the 3.9 that followed. The fact it has such low mileage and lived in Jersey is just showing off
Regular readers of The Landy will be well acquainted with Atkinson Bespoke Engineering, the company in which Paul plies his trade and wisdom, and Nick’s Range Rover has been on the receiving end of Paul’s expertise to ensure that it stays as brilliant as it looks today. The Jersey Classic was bought a week after the pair met and it was then trailered down in time for last Christ-
mas. Nick had the basis of a very solid Range Rover and a machine that could be cherished for another 25 years, but work still needed doing. ‘What I was trying to do was keep it forever!’ Paul laughs when we all meet to see the results. ‘I was on the phone every two weeks with an update for him; sending pictures and so on.’ Nick grins and shakes his head simultaneously. ‘It’s like when your wife is expecting and you have a scan to highlight the progress,’ chuckles Paul. Work completed consisted of sorting a couple of patches in the floor, although generally the body was good. The wheelarches were cleaned up with a wire brush and the areas were treated. Paint was freshly applied to the bottoms of the doors and the vehicle has undergone the Krown Rust Control process, which Paul informs me they now use on all the Scania and Volvo trucks from new. ‘Whoever had played with it previously had put it back together wrong – they failed at the jigsaw puzzle basically,’ states Paul. ‘The spotlight bracket was missing and the mudflap brackets were out of place, things like that really.’ At least with Paul’s number at hand, Nick should never find himself without the solution to any puzzle his Range Rover throws up in future. Or any others he adds to the collection. ‘I’m fully converted from the Mercedes obsession. I had a collection of Mercedes – four at one stage - and will probably end up with just the one. With the Range Rovers, I will probably get another two,’ says Nick ambitiously. Continued overleaf

‘It would be nice to have an LSE as an everyday car. And I’m starting to like the early L322s, so maybe an early 4.4 V8 with the BMW engine as well? As for this, this is a keeper. The shape is iconic. It’s got this amazing driving position, extremely comfortable. The P38 just feels slightly more detached than the Classics. ‘My uncle had a Series III, so I have always liked Land Rovers. The fact that this is a 3.5 is just a coincidence; there are lots of 3.9s for sale out there. Having had two Rover P6s before, the engine – and noise – is very familiar to me, though!’ Seeing a newcomer to the Land Rover family find such a beautiful machine and embrace the marque that we adore takes us back to the moments we first stepped into this sacred circle. Of course, once you join, embracing the situation is all you can do, because you sure as hell will struggle to leave. It would seem Nick is settling down for the long haul, however, having already planned his perfect three-car garage. I suppose we could let him keep the token Merc outside the garage as well.

‘This is where living in a Land Rover makes all the difference’
Landy Livin’
When you picture overlanding, you think of beautiful landscapes, extreme climates and wildlife that few human eyes will ever witness. But have you thought about being stranded at the side of the road, covered from head to toe in dust, with corrupt policemen sniffing for bribes? It could happen. But enough about Middle England…

t’ll be amazing,’ they said. ‘A trip of a lifetime,’ they said. Every day we want to believe that driving through Africa in our ’91 Defender named Maggie is an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experience. But the truth is that it doesn’t always feel like rainbows and butterflies. And at times it can be really, really hard. But it’s exactly because it’s hard that makes the experience we’ve had all the more rewarding. So without further ado, here’s our list of highs and lows of living life on the road in a Landy.
Above: Maggie and the team with a Masaai admirer in Arusha, Tanzania Below: Mechanics work away on Maggie in Conakry, Guinea
HIGH: Living in a Land Rover is a great conversation starter There’s no two ways about it: Defenders, especially those as well travelled as Maggie, have character. And by far our favourite part of travelling through Africa in a Land Rover is the people we meet along the way. And living in a Defender is a great way to start conversations with people from all walks of life: locals, tourists and fellow overlanders alike. When we first started our journey, we were particularly amazed by how many people in the remotest parts of the world recognise and admire the Defender. ‘This is a strong vehicle!’ locals would often say. ‘Have you really been to all these places?’ they ask, admiring Maggie’s many bumper
stickers from places visited with us and with previous owners. We also hear a lot of stories from Land Rover owners. There have even been a few occasions where we have been invited to stay with people, who initially approached us just to admire our vehicle. Looking back on these times, we often wonder if we would have as much fun in any other vehicle.
LOW: The breakdowns The Namib desert at sunset. The sandy back roads of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. The outskirts of Tanzania’s Uluguru Mountains. We will always remember travelling through these beautiful places for their stunning scenery and majestic wildlife. But also as places Maggie has broken down and
35
a mechanic nearby who knows how to work on a Land Rover. And where parts are scarce, they often have resourceful ways of fixing vehicles. After breaking down in the hinterlands of Tanzania, we were taken on the back of a motorbike to an engineer whose father had taught him to work on Tdi engines. No pushrods in town? No problem. He made some for us right there in his shop, and we were back on the road within the week.
HIGH: Camping in magnificent places
Above: Our campsite overlooking Lake Malawi at the Mushroom Farm Lodge, Livingstonia left us stranded! It’s no good admiring the wildlife when the animals are seasoning you with salt and pepper. It’s moments like that when you wish you’d packed a few more spares – mechanical and underwear wise. With over 250,000 miles on the clock and seven expeditions through Africa since 1997, we have learnt the hard way to expect the odd break-
down. Thus far, the biggest expense of life on the road in a Defender has been on parts and mechanics. Many years of driving on poorly maintained roads has taken a toll on our beloved Defender, and on our pockets. Some breakdowns were worse than others. In the Namib desert, Maggie blew a hole in the engine block. We were devastated and off the road for
six weeks. In the Okavango Delta, she had a loose connection on the starter motor, but we were back on the road the next day. On a long road trip through remote areas, the location of the breakdown is sometimes just as important as the type of breakdown itself. We’ve learnt the importance of remaining calm and working out logically how to
potentially recover the situation. Our first step is always to try to diagnose and fix the problem ourselves, if possible. Those not mechanically inclined (like us) will eventually become so after a few months at the mercy of their Land Rover. But even with difficult breakdowns, we’ve learnt never to worry. No matter where you are in Africa, there is always
Some of our fondest memories from our journey in Africa have been the amazing places we’ve visited. And if there’s one thing we’ve learnt about travelling in this region, it’s that the most spectacular places are often the hardest to reach. This is where living in a Land Rover makes all the difference – difficult terrain is where Maggie really comes to life. After a long, tiring drive over rough terrain, there’s nothing better than being rewarded by incredible, unspoilt views. Continued over on Page 38

A small step for mankind Putting stuff on the roof is all well and good, but you need to be able to actually reach it without jumping or employing stilts. Which is where this two-part ladder from Front Runner steps up.
Two-part you’re thinking? Or you’re thinking of bacon, in which case please pay attention. So there’s that main part you see, made of aluminium and stainless steel and then black powder coated. It slots into the gutter at the
top and then is bolted further down, above the number plate. Then there’s the second part, which is lower down, mounted below the bumper. This is made of stainless steel and is again black powder coated. This set up allows you to get up on the bottom step before starting to climb up the main steps above. And hopefully this will be too big a gap for a crafty baboon, but you can never tell with them, particularly if you have bacon on the roof. So if you want to better access the roof rack – obviously a Front Runner Slimline II would be perfect – then toddle along to the Front Runner website (www.frontrunneroutfitters. com) where you’ll find both parts for $108.46. If you’re struggling to sort stuff out on the roof, this really could save your bacon. Mmm, bacon.
The Pursuit of Choppiness
Wild Tents If you go into the bundu then you’re going into the remote wilderness, and that’s where you’re expected to go with this new roof tent from BunduTec. Mind you, you’re not exactly leaving civilisation behind. Remember all that faff with guy ropes and poles and stuff? Not here – you literally just press a button. It looks just like a slimline aluminium box on the roof of your Land Rover.Yet press a button and the top rises up under electric motors. The four heavy-duty ripstop canvas sides tauten up and then it stops, with a rain gutter coming out which makes it look a little bit like one of those Chinese pagodas. That’s it. The tent is now ready for you to enter, all waterproof, and ready to go. It’s insulated and lined and there is power up there as well as LED lighting. When it’s time to go you can leave your bedding in place – although not your partner – and
simply press the button to lower the roof again. Four catches and you’re on the road once more.Very simple and rather attractive.
There’s a special introductory offer of £2595 inc VAT with limited availability, so if you fancy raising the roof get over to www.tuff-trek.com
Here’s just the thing for your snowflake cousin. Three blades that can saw, hack and generally mullah everything you’re likely to come up against. It’s called, perhaps slightly ominously, the Gerber Pursuit Kit. We really wouldn’t want to be pursued by someone with this little trio about their person. There’s the machete, which is called the Gator Khukri machete, not so much because you could use it for gutting and massacring alligators, but because it does indeed have a bit of the khukri shape about it, that famous blade the Gurkhas still use to such terrifying effect. There’s a sharp pointy bit for poking things, a wide midsection for chopping and hacking and a narrow bit you can use when you have a need for a bit of whittling. With a slip-free grip and a tough carrying
sheath, you should be all set just with this one blade. But there’s more. The Gerber Freeman Guide is a tough knife with a 4in blade, a grip shaped for fingers (not suitable for use by ducks or those of a webbed persuasion), and a general ruggedness that should last a long time. The third item in the mix is the Sliding Saw, with a 6.5in stainless steel blade that will cut wood like, well, a knife through butter. With this little threesome the great outdoors should hold no fears, whether you’re cutting wood for a fire, gutting your catch or hacking up some bedding. Normally this would be £109.97 but you can get the lot for a mere £49.99. And if your snowflake cousin bleats that it makes them want their safe space, point out that this little lot would make any space totally safe. www.bladesandbows.co.uk

LOW: Patience is a necessary virtue After a year on the road in Africa, we’ve lost count of the number of times we’ve been stopped by traffic police. Usually not for speeding. Maggie’s 200Tdi diesel engine rarely exceeds 55 mph. And even then only when travelling downhill with a tail wind. Ask anyone who has travelled overland in Africa and they all say the same thing: traffic police find inventive ways of collecting fines. Usually this involves searching vehicles for even the most minor violations of traffic laws. Over the years, ‘violations’ over which we’ve been threatened with fines

police were Nigeria and Tanzania. In Nigeria, Maggie was impounded for a day by police who insisted we convert her from a right-hand drive to a lefthand drive vehicle. This was despite having the law, and all the necessary documentation and import permits, on our side. With the help of a local lawyer we met the previous day in a traffic jam, we managed to escape the situation without paying a bribe. In Tanzania, we found police officers, who were stationed in nearly every town, using WhatsApp to enforce speed limits. Of course, we know that WhatsApp is not capable of recording the speed of passing vehicles. However, try keeping your patience while explaining this to officers stationed every 10km on a 500km daily drive. Unable to keep our cool any longer, we learnt our lesson and headed for the back roads! Below: Noel, Marilu and Maggie at the equator in Uganda

LOW: Getting dirty Keeping Maggie and all our equipment clean is a constant chore, and a source of many arguments. Anyone who drives a Defender in Africa knows how difficult it can be to keep the dust out. In dry environments especially, driving a Defender can often feel like driving a Hoover through a sand storm. In Namibia, for example, where few roads are paved, driving a few hundred miles in Maggie leaves you pondering whether there is more sand in the vehicle than in the Kalahari Desert you’re crossing. Then there are our dirty bodies. In hot temperatures, sweat and dust are horrible bed fellows. And when showers are few and far between, we’ve been forced to develop innovative ways of keeping clean. To this end, we’ve found that a portable shower, a few packs of wet wipes and some sanitising gel can go a long way.

HIGH: Life changing experiences For us, it was an act of significant courage to leave our London lives behind for the meagre comforts of a cook stove and a roof-top tent. But after a year on the road, we can confidently say that the decision to take time off to travel through Africa was a life-changing experience. And although living in a Land Rover can be challenging, life on the road forces us to focus on the journey rather than the destination. The most satisfying experiences we’ve had were in unexpected adventures and happenings. And not to mention that the people we’ve met and places we’ve seen along the way that have left permanent impressions on us. After Noel’s first overland journey through West Africa and Southern Africa, we met and bonded over our love of travel and adventure. Two years later, we were married. Five years later, we were back on the road. And we’re so excited to be able to share our experiences with everyone through our stories and tales – just like this one. Ruby’s Off Again: Episode Ten
South America is a big place, but after months of exploring what this colourful continent has to offer, Ruby The Landy and her compadres are entering their final chapter in the world’s most diverse region Pictures: Jenny Bright & Gavin Lowrie
W
e’ve come a long way, but we’re not too sure where we’ve been.’ It wouldn’t be surprising if the famous Take That song struck more than just a musical chord with our trio of travellers, now facing their last days in the continent of South America. We rejoin the crew having followed them down through Latin America, from those early tyre tracks in Columbia right down to Antarctica, before we now shadow their movements as they finish travelling through Argentina and Chile. The last we heard, Ruby, Jen and Gav left Antiguos for Chile Chico and headed north along the Carretera Austral, a 1240-kilometre highway running past national parks, forests, glaciers, turquoise lakes and the Pacific Ocean, and all with big portions of it unpaved, adding to the fun. ‘We camped at Puerto Rio Tranquilo before catching a small boat trip to the marble caves (Capillas de Marmol),’ says Gav. Jen adds: ‘The boat took us on the beautiful clear waters of Lago General Carrera, to the caves consisting of sculpted geological rock formations and we went inside to marvel at how smooth and colourful they were.’ Ruby later transported her friends to the Laguna San Rafael National
Park to let them stretch their legs on a hike up to a viewpoint overlooking the 30,000-year-old San Valentin glacier. A pit stop with a mechanic in La Junta sorted the new bush for Ruby’s front shock, before a wild camp stay by the side of Lago Rosselot. Things started to hot up as the trio moved onto Chaiten, close to the volcano which erupted in 2008, spraying up a 20kmhigh column of ash for a month. Stops at Puerto Varas and South America’s second largest island, Chiloe, followed – the former overlooked by the volcanoes, Osorno and Calbuco, while the latter is famous for its 150 wooden churches and chapels, 14 of which are UNESCO world heritage sites. ‘The weather hadn’t been too kind of late, so we escaped the rain by venturing back to Argentina,’ says Jen. ‘We met our lovely Swiss friends, Claudia and David (first encountered in Columbia) at Las Llajas where they were working at a huskie and horse lodge, 1500 metres up in the Andes.’ So wild camping by lakes and huskie-sitting in the snow-dusted Andes makes things sound rather delightful. But then Ruby and her friends reached Mendoza where activities took a turn for the lairy. Mendoza is renowned for its vineyards and bodegas, so consequently some sampling needed to be done. Some smart Alec had decided that
cycling – where proficient skills in balancing are preferred – would be the best form of transport to get from the likes of Tempus Alba to the Trapiche. For this reason, and more, Jen and Gav wish to return to Argentina in the future. However, for now they crossed back into Chile to conclude the last leg of their South American tour. Ruby took them across the border at Paso Internacional Los Libertadores, a mountain pass 3200 metres high in
the Andes. Descending on the Chilean side down the steep switchbacks, Ruby almost reached Los Andes before her clutch gave way. Rescued by a kind father and son, Ruby was dragged to her final South American capital, Santiago. ‘While being fixed, we stayed in a fantastic Airbnb, a small house, with a lovely yard, owned by a wonderful lady who lived next door, Teresita,’ says Gav. ‘We were invited for Sunday lunch with Teresita and her children and had a wonderful time, filled with meat from the parilla and lots of good wine.’ Jen continues: ‘The following weekend, we reciprocated and invited them for a traditional English Sunday
dinner, consisting of roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. They loved it!’ Santiago had a serious side too, though. In April/May time, Chile is prone to earthquakes. In the depths of one particular night, off the coast of Valparaiso approximately 100km away, Jen and Gav experienced their first earthquake. It shook them, literally, but two nights later, around 7.30pm, the house began to quake. The shuddering went on for a minute with Teresita calling them outside once it had stopped - it is safer this way. The quake had measured at 7.1 on the Richter scale. Fortunately, on this occasion, there were no fatalities.
Below: In Chile, you can visit the Capillas de Marmol, a collection of marble caves with walls famous for how smooth they are. This is an attraction you can truly marble at...
41 Above: South America is known for being a colourful continent – and that can be seen by all through the various pieces of street art visible in places like Valparaiso Ruby now had a new clutch and had been given a bath ready for shipping to Vancouver for the next chapter in this wild adventure. Jen and Gav sent Ruby on her way and caught the bus to visit Valparaiso, taking in the street art and busy nature of this buzzing city. They headed back to Santiago ready for their flight back to the UK, a respite in this ongoing trek around the globe and a chance to catch up with family and friends, as well as stocking up on supplies like Yorkshire Tea before rendezvousing with Ruby in Vancouver. ‘South America has been a brilliant experience and has been so very kind to us,’ lauds Gav. ‘We both overwhelmingly loved Colombia and we could not recommend it highly enough to other overlanders.’ ‘Its people are the friendliest we have met,’ says Jen, ‘In fact that is the standout trait of South America, followed by the continent’s diversity. It is so beautiful, with beaches, mountains, jungles, the history – we will certainly be back.’ Read more of Ruby The Landy’s adventures and Jen and Gav’s world tour at www.rubythelandy.com Below: Throughout their time in Latin America, Jen, Gav and Ruby met some wonderful people, and none more so than Jorge Contreras. Sadly, in July, Jorge passed away. Jen and Gav are thankful for being able to have had the chance to meet him

One Defender with all the Trimmings: Part Two
This month in the continuing re-trim of our Td5 Defender, we move from the preparation phase to the fitting. And the effects of Ruskin’s craftsmanship are becoming clear to see
L
ast time out, we went behind the scenes to uncover the work that goes into making a Ruskin Inside interior. We took along one man’s Td5 Defender 90 and let Ruskin start to flow their years of knowledge into its cabin. While the first part illustrated some of the preparation and necessary work needed before the lavish materials can start to enter the vehicle, this month we’re taking a brief glance at the fitting process, along with a closer look at some of the completed components. When it comes to the fitting, everything is done by hand. The team at Ruskin know Defenders inside out – and it’s incredible what innovations they can put back into your faithful Land Rover.
Words: Mike Trott Pictures: Webizzy & Mike Trott The guys will start from the rear of the cabin and move forwards, essentially because it’s easier to install the uprated panels without having to scamper over the new leather seats. Paul, who heads up the design team, oversees the project from the moment the door to the Land Rover is opened for inspection, to when the time comes to hand back the keys and reflect on yet another exemplary re-trim, before moving on to make someone else’s Landy even more special. In the next issue of The Landy, you’ll find Part Three of the series, where we showcase the finished retrim and speak to Colin about what difference a Ruskin interior makes. Meanwhile, see more interiors from Ruskin here: ruskindesign.co.uk

or some, the Defender has always been the apple of Solihull’s eye. But then where would the Defender be without the Discovery? For many, it’s the Discovery that deserves the most credit, for there would be no Land Rover had it not rocked up in 1989. And after the 200Tdi Discovery brought the Green Oval back on track, out came the improved 300Tdi. More refined, but no less of a Swiss army knife, the Discovery was comfortable, practical, yet capable of going virtually anywhere a Defender could go. So, the 300Tdi Disco – what’s the catch? Ashley Counsell of Ashley 4x4 explains... ‘Along with the 200Tdi, in my opinion, the 300Tdi is one of the best engines to come from Land Rover,’ declares Ashley. ‘OK, compared to modern turbo-diesels, it has nothing like the power and flexibility, but for sheer
* Based on 40-year-old driver, average area, 5+ years NCB, second vehicle, 2000 miles a year, with green lane and off-road cover, no claims or convictions and £100 excess
plodding dependability, reliability, ease of maintenance and low running costs, it’s hard to beat.’ Any issues to be aware of then? Well, Ashley says good regular maintenance should be all you need to keep this unit going for a long, long time. Parts are cheap and plentiful – and the engine is simple enough to work on yourself. ‘Automatic models have electronic diesel control so there’s a little bit more going on, but now with home diagnostics widely available for no great cost, troubleshooting shouldn’t be too difficult,’ adds Ashley. Sticking with gearboxes for a moment, you have the choice of the R380 manual or ZF auto. The latter is relatively trouble-free, as is the L230 transfer box and the 300’s axles, but check for oil leaks and maintain your levels regularly. ‘Manual boxes will wear out, with crunchy changes from worn synchros,
and sometimes heavy knocking when letting the clutch in, often indicating the mainshaft splines are worn where the gearbox mates with the transfer box,’ explains Ashley. ‘All fixable, but budget £1000 plus for a fitted reconditioned unit and new transfer box gear to match.’ The suspension is subject to the usual wear and tear, while the Disco’s electronics and heating are the most basic of systems. ‘The optional air-con can pack up due to leaks – again fixable, but a lot of folks don’t bother. Just open the window!’ smiles Ashley. When it comes to the 300’s chassis, expect the vehicle to have received some repairs or to need some in the future. You have to remember they are now all the best part of two decades old. And that shows nowhere better than in a 300’s body – the Discovery 1’s Achilles heel.
Ashley rues, ‘They corrode virtually everywhere: sills, body mounts, floors, arches, wings... many vehicles will have been repaired by now, but the standard of work can vary. Check thoroughly before purchasing. Or get a mate who’s good with a welder!’ Other than the body then, a late Discovery 1 with a 300Tdi motor can be a
brilliant coup, either as an off-road toy or as your daily runner. ‘Get a half-decent one and with a bit of ongoing care and attention, you can have a dependable truck which you could keep going forever,’ claims Ashley. ‘We won’t be able to say that about a new Discovery in 2037...’ He may have a point.

Series I (1948-1958)
I
f you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go. The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike. Its 1940’s engineering gives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once
were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then a finished example will fetch mega bucks. Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished examples now retailing where they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game. The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets. But can you really put a price on such an icon?
Series II/IIA (1958-1971)
I
n 1958, the second-generation Land Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders. Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts. The prices are on the increase, however, as these 50-year-old vehicles start to come into their own as a collector’s
item. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2.0-litre diesel, were underpowered and noisy. The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of refinement over the Series I. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks.
Series III (1971-1985)
F
ollowing on from the Series IIA, the Series III emerged in 1971 with a few cosmetic tweaks to freshen up the model. Headlights were shifted out to the wings in-line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top of the bulkhead – not sure it’s a five stars on the Euro NCAP scale, though. The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar
to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout its production, although in 1980 the 2.25 motors switched to a more durable five bearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with. They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.
Lightweight (1968-1984)
P
ossibly the ugly duckling of the Series Land Rover family – but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t find much love for the Series Lightweights. These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance that does divide opinion on occasion. To mimic the civvy Series ma-
chines, the SIII LWT – built from 1972 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings. These Series Lightweights throw up an extra dimension to Land Rover ownership, with military history and touches often machine-gunning the vehicle. It means you get a Land Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd.
Forward Controls (1962-1978)
O
nly serious enthusiasts need continue reading here. Ownership of any Forward Control is not for the faint-hearted. These leviathans are expensive to run and trying to get hold of some of the parts can be, quite frankly, a bit of a nightmare! Clubs can help here, though, as is often the case with any Land Rover. These vehicles offer substantial
payloads if that’s the sort of thing you’re after, but will also tick the boxes for huge, unnecessary and hilariously addictive fun. If you’re going to go the whole hog then why not buy a 101FC. You’ll have a V8 engine harping away underneath you (literally) and people are likely to clear out of your way when they see you coming in their mirrors. Surely that’s reason enough to buy one?

Ninety/One Ten (1983-1990)
T
he icon of the 4x4 world. This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you just about anywhere in the world. Early examples of the Ninety and One Ten are worth keeping hold of, providing they’re in good condition – but you’ll be searching far and wide for examples that are. This was the birth of the Defender, despite not being christened officially
until 1990, and as such these Land Rovers had coil-sprung suspension, new engines – although they were still terribly underwhelming – and offroad capability that has still yet to be matched today. A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5TD version with low miles and good history. They’re robust and as simple as they come.
Defender 200Tdi (1990-1994)
I
n 1990, the Defender name emerged and with it a cementing of a legacy that already stretched back over 40 years. This was... is the best 4x4 by far. It carried the Tdi badge for the first time and meant that no longer was a Defender being powered by a feeble hamster in a wheel. If you’re in the market for a 200 Defender, though, you might get a 200 unit but it might not necessarily
be from a Defender. Replacing blown units with a Disco 200Tdi is popular, so check the arrangement of the turbo and manifold. The 200Tdi is probably the best for off-roaders, so many of these vehicles will have been worked hard. Some owners have now started restoring these vehicles, meaning a premium price – but can you really put a price on perfection...?
Defender 300Tdi (1994-1998)
A
fter the 200 followed the 300Tdi. Essentially, this was a revised version of the predecessor – perhaps a little more refined – but still with the same durability. These engines, providing they are properly maintained, can last for decades. Look around for one with full service history and you could find yourself a keeper. Some Tdi Defenders have received
galvanised chassis and even bulkheads, and these are the type of Defender you should be after. A futureproof Landy. By the time the 300Tdi came out, Land Rover was now giving the Defender power steering as standard and disc brakes all-round. It’s the little things after all. Arguably the company’s greatest engine, balancing performance and practicality. The Defender in its prime.
Defender Td5 (1998-2007)
F
ollowing on from the Tdi era, Land Rover issued the Defender with its Td5 engine from 1998 to 2007. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure that any mods have been done properly. Remaps, EGR valve deletes and uprated intercoolers are a few examples
of what many have been subject to. Lots of power doesn’t always mean happy faces. The rear of the chassis has frequently been called into question, so protect the rear crossmember if it’s in good shape, or else face the consequences. With minimal electrics, the Td5 Defender is still a DIY machine and you’ll be working on one of Land Rover’s most notable masterpieces.
Defender TDCi (2007-2016)
T
he last of the Defenders were fitted with Ford Transit engines – first the 2.4 TDCi, followed by the 2.2 TDCi, brought in to meet Euro V emission standards and keep the Defender alive for another few years. Sadly, these engines denoted the Defender’s swansong, the twilight of its days. They were fitted with six-speed gearboxes, still had phenomenal offroad capability and even made the
Defender a nice place to be. But they were still very much Defenders. The era of blinging also began and you can find special editions out there costing obscene amounts of money. You will pay a premium for these Defenders, especially since the end of production. But if you can grab a 2.2 TDCi and start preserving it now, you may well never see depreciation. We’re no financial advisors, though...
£2500-£15000 Versions: Ninety (‘84-’90), One Ten, 127 (‘83-’90). 2.25 4cyl petrol (‘83-’85), 3.5 V8 (‘83-’90), 2.5NA 4cyl diesel (‘84-’90), 2.5 4cyl petrol (‘85-’90), 2.5TD (‘86-’90). Pros: Good ones are now worth saving, same ability as Tdi Defenders Cons: Not many left in good condition, engines underpowered
£3200-£25000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (19901994). 200Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel.
Pros: Legendary off-road, one of the very best engines, old-school electrics Cons: Genuine Defender 200Tdi units are getting rare, many have been used hard, corrosion
£3500-£20000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (19941998). 300Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel.
Pros: A slightly more refined Tdi powerplant, the best? Cons: Erm... erm... hmm, this is hard
£4000-£20000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (19982007). Td5 2.5 5cyl turbo-diesel.
Pros: Off-road capability, power, reliability (generally) Cons: Rear chassis, premium prices at the moment
£10000-£35000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (20072016). 2.4 TDCi (‘07-’12), 2.2 TDCi (‘12-’16).
Pros: Better emissions (marginally), more creature comforts, same offroad prowess Cons: Price, more electrics, last of the breed
Freelander 1 (1997-2006)
W
e haven’t always held the Freelander 1 in the highest regard here at The Landy, but as market prices constantly change, so too can our opinion on certain vehicles. With examples attainable from as little as £500, the Freelander 1 represents a cheap gateway into Landy ownership. There are a few issues to be aware of, though, such as the viscous coupling, which is expensive to replace and can
be upset by simply having mismatched tyres on your axles. The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures, but today’s replacements are much more robust. The V6 is thirsty and the 2.0Di is gutless, so opt for a TD4 – but check the condition of the injectors first. Buy an FL1 and you even get a Landy that’s decent off-road and doesn’t carry the usual trait of rusting after five minutes.
Freelander 2 (2006-2015)
M
ost people will turn their noses up at Freelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true Land Rovers. But while you should turn your nose up at the FL1, the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think. Because of it being replaced by the Discovery Sport, the FL2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels of refinement, a strong 2.2-litre
four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make for a great family vehicle. Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there. Prices are now falling thanks to the Freelander name disappearing from the production line, but for £10,000 you can now get a capable all-rounder that is actually pretty adept off-road and yet still economical to run.
51
£500-£3000 Versions: 1.8 4cyl petrol (‘97-’05), 2.0Di 4cyl diesel (‘97-’00), TD4 2.0 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘00-’06), 2.5i V6 petrol (‘00-’05). Pros: Cheap to buy, no major rust issues, surprisingly good off-road Cons: There are better Land Rovers out there, FL2 showed the FL1 how it should have been done
£3700-£20000 Versions: 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel, available in two- or four-wheel drive, 3.2 V6 petrol (‘07-’09).
Pros: Better off-road than you may anticipate, reliability, refinement, economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing
52
Range Rover Classic (1970-1996)
T
he Range Rover Classic is one of those vehicles that you could theoretically still use everyday in the 21st Century. If you’re running a V8, however, that may not be such a wise idea. Classic Range Rovers still provide a relatively refined and great drive today, but they can be thirsty if you’re not in one of the various turbo-diesel examples. That said, if you own one and it’s
in good condition – look after it, as it will only appreciate. These vehicles are popular with collectors. Unfortunately, in terms of spare parts, many have succumb to corrosion or have been abused off-road to the point of no return. While an early ‘70s Classic may not be attainable for everyone, tidy examples of the late four-door versions can make for an equally tidy investment.
Range Rover P38A (1994-2002)
M
any people believe the P38A Range Rover to be a bit of a menace – and often it’s completely justified. Lights on the dashboard, air suspension failure, head gasket failure... the list can really continue. Still, it’s not all doom and gloom with the P38. In fact, if you find one in good working order, it’s sensational. Service history is a must, and if you’re going to own one then some
diagnostic equipment is going to be a better companion than a spanner. Avoid the diesel variant as the engine was adopted from a BMW saloon and isn’t up to the task of the extra weight a Range Rover carries. Go for a 4.6 HSE, it’s actually more economical than the 4.0 V8 and you’ll get all the toys (working or not). Or you could try and find an anniversary model or even a Holland & Holland...
Range Rover L322 (2002-2012)
C
ompared to the P38, the L322 Range Rover was a saint. Generally. Its electronic aids were far less temperamental and it delivered a new level of luxury to four-wheeled motoring. The Td6 receives mixed reviews: some say it’s underpowered while others say it’s the best of the bunch. Common sense would steer you towards a TDV8, either the 3.6 or 4.4, but these are the L322s holding out
for strong money. Notably, the petrol V8s are lingering with very appealing price tags, but don’t think running one would be cheap. As with many 21st Century Land Rovers, they have lost their accessability for the home mechanic. Drivetrain faults are becoming more frequent, so you need to look for that FSH. As a car, however, it’s probably all the car you’ll ever need.
Range Rover L405 (2012-present)
I
f you want the very best in automotive luxury, then look no further. The latest incarnation of Land Rover’s flagship Range Rover weighs a whopping 400kg less than its predecessor thanks to the use of an aluminium body, which helps on mpg – although owning one of these suggests that your cash flow isn’t particularly an issue. This is the last word in elegance and majestic motoring. All the engines
supply copious amounts of power to your right foot, while the L405 hasn’t lost any of its off-road pedigree... even if taking one off-road is like asking your alcoholic friend to a wine-testing session. They could comfortably partake, but probably shouldn’t. Prices are still only right for Premier League footballers and people with a link to the royal family. If you fit into that category, then we envy you.
RR Sport 1 (2005-2013)
M
uch of the Range Rover Sport was borrowed from the Disco 3, in fact it shared virtually identical underpinnings, whereas today’s RR Sport uses actual Range Rover foundations. Nevertheless, Land Rover put a Range Rover in a tracksuit and attempted to make a handler out of it. To some extent they succeeded, although it’s no sports car despite what it says on the back of the vehicle.
It can play the leisure vehicle very well, though, and will go off-road like the best of them. If you’re going to buy one, then you need to love it for itself, becausse a Discovery of the same era is more practical, while a full-fat Range Rover is always going to carry an extra layer of prestige. They’re still a good all-rounder, though, and now relatively affordable.
£1500-£50000+ Versions: Two-door (‘70-’85), four-door (‘81-’96), LSE (‘92-’96). 3.5 V8 petrol (‘70-’86), 3.5 EFI V8 petrol (‘86-’89), 3.9 EFi V8 (‘89-’96), 2.4 VM turbo-diesel (‘86-’92), 200Tdi (‘92-’94), 300Tdi (‘94-’96). Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust (again), availability of parts for early models, V8 thirst
£600-£11000 Versions: 4.0 V8 petrol, 4.6 V8 petrol, 2.5 6cyl turbo-diesel.
Pros: Luxury, price, a Land Rover that doesn’t rust. Could even P38 prices rise soon? Cons: Electrics. Nuff said
£4000-£40000 Versions: 3.0 Td6 (‘02-’06), 4.4 V8 petrol (‘02-’07), 3.6 TDV8 (‘06-’10), 4.4 TDV8 (‘10-’12), 4.2 supercharged V8 petrol (‘05-’09), 5.0 supercharged V8 petrol (‘09-’12).
Pros: Great off-road, luxury, image, TDV8 powerplants Cons: Your maintenance bill
£45000-£150000 Versions: 3.0 TDV6, 4.4 SDV8, 5.0 supercharged V8 petrol, 3.0 SDV6 hybrid (‘14-present).
Pros: Styling, engines, capability at pretty much everything Cons: Price
£7000-£40000 Versions: 2.7 TDV6 (‘05-’09), 3.0 TDV6 (‘09-’11), 3.0 SDV6 (‘11-’12), 4.4 V8 petrol (‘05-’07), 3.6 TDV8 (‘07’10), 4.2 supercharged V8 (‘05-’09), 5.0 supercharged V8 (‘09-’12). Pros: Decent performance from both engines and chassis, a lot of car for your money Cons: Not as practical as a Disco, not as prestigious as a proper Rangey
RR Sport 2 (2013-present)
T
he second-generation Range Rover Sport has also been on a diet to save over 400kg, just like the daddy Range Rover. That means that even this big bruiser is relatively economical when spec’d with the SDV6 motor. Some won’t like the vulgar and flamboyant posture, while others will adhere to the smart, yet mean styling. But no one can knock the Sport for its
performance. It feels incredibly light for such a big car, and if you’ve robbed a bank and can afford the SVR version, it’s as good round a race track as it is on a green lane. The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Removing limbs is possibly the most feasible option, or wait ten years and see if the prices have come tumbling down off those high pedestals.
53
£43000-£130000 Versions: 3.0 SDV6, 4.4 SDV8, 5.0 supercharged V8, 3.0 SDV6 Hybrid. Range Rover Sport SVR 5.0 supercharged V8 (‘15-present).
Pros: Feels light considering weight, engines, almost as luxurious as its bigger brother Cons: You’ll need deep pockets
RR Evoque (2011-present)
W
hen the Range Rover Evoque was launched, it signalled Jaguar Land Rover’s intent on hitting the mass market. And given that the Evoque is their fastest-selling vehicle to-date, they’ve clearly done the job. That doesn’t mean it’s a hit with purists. They don’t much like the fact Victoria Beckham was involved in the designing of it, nor that it is the polar opposite to a Defender.
LAND ROVER T H E E V E RY D AY C L A S S I C
It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac, but it would rather not go down that route. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and because there are so many out there, they have decent residuals. Go for a five-door with the new Ingenium engine, and make it the 4WD version. The 2WD model may be eco-friendly but what is a Range Rover without four-wheel drive?
£14000-£48000 Versions: 2.2 SD4 (‘11-’15), 2.0 Si4 4cyl petrol, 2.0 TD4 (‘15-present).
Pros: Economy, handling, beats rivals off-road Cons: Not as practical as the new Discovery Sport

Discovery 1 (1989-1998)
T
he earliest version of the Discovery was aimed purely at providing a middle ground between the agricultural Defender and the luxury, upper-class Range Rover. It carried much of the Defender’s capabilities, but added more refinement and a driving experience more suitable to families – but without a Range Rover price tag. Blessed with the same wonderful
Tdi engines, the Discovery saved Land Rover and hit back at offerings from other nations by being an affordable all-rounder. And that still holds true even today. Early Discovery 1s in fine condition are now classics and will continue to appreciate. We would recommend trying to find a tidy and later 300Tdi example, but watch out for body rust – the boot floor, arches and wings etc.
Discovery 2 (1998-2004)
F
ollowing on from the first-generation Discovery, in 1998 Land Rover gave its family SUV some minor cosmetic tweaks and a whole new power unit in the shape of the Td5. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure any mods have been done properly. You can also buy a V8, but
the fuel bill isn’t going to be welcome, plus they’re more temporamental. Unlike on the D1, its the chassis that’s the problem, not the body. We all know that Discos make for a great tow car, and consequently many of the rear chassis on D2s have dipped their rears into the sea. Not all of them live to tell the tale... Get a later example for more creature comforts and difflocks too.
Discovery 3/4 (2004-present)
T
he Discovery went through a dramatic revamp for its launch in 2004, but it came out the other side as one hell of a vehicle. Greatly improved in terms of power and refinement, the Disco 3 received the relatively economical 2.7 TDV6 engine (although the thirsty 4.4 V8 petrol was an option) and became the first Land Rover to be given Terrain Response. If you need one vehicle in
your life, this could be the one that ticks the most boxes at once. Be weary of maintenance costs, especially as you approach the 105,000mile/seven-year mark that means the timing belt is due – it’s a body-off job! The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines are even better, with monumental amounts of torque. Luxury has also increased significantly in later examples. A later SDV6 model is best.
Discovery 5 (2017-present)
L
aunched just a couple of months ago, this latest Discovery is still yet to hit the UK roads on mass. Land Rover needed to improve economy in particular with this edition of the Disco, and having chopped 480kg from the kerbweight, it would seem their proficiency in the use of lightweight technologies is only getting better and better. We’ve yet to drive the latest Discov-
ery, but expectations are high – especially as this will be Land Rover’s most capable SUV in production. New engines look promising on paper, and Land Rover has listened to customers regarding the infotainment system. It will remain to be seen whether the changes have quenched the thirst of the critics, though. We reckon the base Sd4 model could turn out to provide all you really need.
Discovery Sport (2015-present)
B
rought in to replace the Freelander 2, the Discovery Sport was the vehicle that turned the Discovery brand into a family. It has come to be so much more than a re-badged Freelander, though. For starters, the Discovery Sport has seven seats (just), drives better than a Freelander 2 and is now more refined thanks to the Ingenium Td4 engine. Land Rover is now churning out
substantial units of the baby Disco, now even matching the Evoque for pace as one of the fastest-selling vehicles they make. It’s a more usable vehicle than the Evoque, though, and carries less of the feministic stigma that often surrounds the Evoque. Grab a cleverly-spec’d SE Tech for a car that can be as practical as a daddy Disco, but for a more attractive price.
£500-£5000 Versions: 200Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘89-’94), 300Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘94-’98), 3.5 V8 (‘89-’93), 3.9 V8 (‘94-’98). Pros: Almost as every bit as good as the Defender off-road, price, practicality Cons: The body rusts like it’s been doused in sea water
£1000-£6000 Versions: Td5 2.5 5cyl turbo-diesel, 4.0 V8.
Pros: Td5 power and reliability, great all-rounder, better comfort than D1, diff locks standard for ‘03 onwards (model dependent) Cons: Rear chassis crumbles like its dessert namesake
£5800-£40000 Versions: 2.7 TDV6, 4.4 V8 (‘04’09), 3.0 TDV6 (‘09-’12), 3.0 SDV6 (‘12-present).
Pros: Off-road capability, usability for every occasion, luxury on later models, torque of 3.0-litre engines Cons: Maintenance costs, air compressor on D3s, D4s not so cheap
£43500-£76000 Versions: 2.0 Sd4, 3.0 Td6, 3.0 Si6 (‘16-present).
Pros: Most technologically-advanced Land Rover to-date, keeps Discovery practicality Cons: Not many can afford one currently, easy to mistake for D Sport
£28000-£55000 Versions: SD4 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel (Jan ‘15 - Aug‘15), TD4 Ingenium 2.0 4cyl turbo-diesel (Aug ‘15 onwards).
Pros: More practical than an Evoque – and less vulgar, seven seats, still great off-road Cons: Back seats only for small mammals, price of high-spec models

DIESEL RUBICON NOT FOR B RITAIN Holy grail for off-roaders remains LHD only • Better news from n ext-gen Wrangler Limits on UK supply to end as production capacity is doubled for next Wrangler
S
ince the arrival of the Jeep Wrangler JK in 2006, enthusiasts in Britain have wished the factory would combine the 2.8 CRD diesel engine with the Rubicon off-road spec package. It now does – but while there’s no apparent engineering barrier to doing so in right-hand drive, the company has confirmed that a Rubicon diesel won’t be available in the UK. The latest example of a diesel Rubicon to be shown in public appeared on the Jeep stand at Geneva in March, in the shape of a new special-edition version of the vehicle. Named the Recon, this gains a stronger front axle and
heavy-duty cast diff covers, adding yet more resilience to what is already a uniquely capable off-road vehicle. Further enhancements include a vented Power Dome bonnet, beneath which buyers on what we can still just about call mainland Europe will have a choice between the 2.8 CRD and 284bhp, 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 petrol engines. Here in Britain, only the latter will be available, mated to a five-speed auto gearbox as standard. Sales of the Rubicon Recon are now being rolled out across Jeep’s European markets. Prices are yet to be announced, however Jeep says it will be available in a wide range of paint colours.
Mini’s Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 hybrid will cost from £31,585 (before the government’s plug-in car grant) when it hits the road on 24 June. The 224bhp petrol-electric SUV claims 134.5mpg, 49g/km and a zero-emissions range of up to 25 miles.

As if to taunt British Wrangler fans yet further, Jeep’s stand at Geneva also featured this eye-catching modified Rubicon – diesel-engined, naturally. The vehicle’s purpose was to demonstrate Mopar’s ONE off-road accessory pack. Featuring a 2” suspension lift, steering damper and 265/75R17 Hankook all-terrains on cast alloy rims, this kit is now available through Jeep’s dealer network for 2-door and 4-door Rubicon models – even though in the UK, the vehicle itself is not.

vehi Simply getting hold of vehicles has long been a problem own for would-be Wrangler owners in the UK – and with the demise of the Land Rover Defender, there are more of them than ever. Jeep has admitted that supply here needs to improve – and the company’s boss Michael Manly recently confirmed next-gen that ahead of the next-generation JL model starting production this autumn, the factory is gearing up for a near-100% rise in output. The JL will come to the UK in 2018, with a double-cab pick-up version due to follow a year later. Specific model plans here remain unknown, however the US market is getting its first ever diesel – prompting optimism that when it comes here, the new Wrangler will at last be available with the right engine in Rubicon form. Wran Prices for the new Wrangler are a long way from being finalised, however with better supply it is to be hoped that they will be more realistic than at present. The cheapest Wrangler currently costs £33,925 – almost double what it did when the current model was launched ten years ago.

New 1.9-litre Isu zu D-Max for 2017
4x4 NEWS Ssangyong XAVL will take aim at Disco Sport
NEW THIS M
Medium-sized seven-seat SUV promises modern tech and real off-road ability SSANGYONG’S OFF-ROAD HERITAGE continues to be writ large in its latest concept vehicle, the XAVL. A seven-seater based on 2015’s XAV concept, this will go into production in the near future. Sitting between the current Korando and soon-to-be-replaced Rexton, Ssangyong says the XAVL will be ‘an authentic off-road SUV’. It will be available in 1.5-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel forms, each with a choice of transmissions. Inside, the vehicle promises a wide range of high-tech features. Major functions can be controlled remotely via a smartphone app, the passenger seats have a wi-fi hotspot and Link to Home technology allows you to warm up the oven, operate the central heating and so on from in the cabin. Outside, the XAVL has a ‘tough, masculine exterior’. In the words
of Ssangyong boss Johng-sik Choi, it ‘takes its design inspiration from our iconic Korando model of the

Ssangyong has also revised its current Korando, with a new-look front end and a tough interior which can ‘handle the rough and tumble of family life.’ The vehicle now features LED running lights, 18” diamond-turned alloys and a more comfortable steering wheel. Options include a choice of 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines and manual and auto gearboxes. Four-wheel drive is on offer, as are several other safety features. These updates will see the Korando through to the end of production; Ssangyong’s smallest SUV is due to be replaced two years from now.

Audi’s SQ7 is famous for the electrically powered 48-volt compressor allowing its 4.0 TDI engine to deliver 435bhp and 664lbf.ft from just 1000rpm. But the system also has a future in the company’s petrol-engined products – the first of which is the Q8 Sport Concept. A four-seat coupe-SUV, this features a 3.0 TFSI petrol engine with the 48v changer in a mild hybrid system developing 470bhp and 516lbf.ft. As well as allowing a 4.7-seconds 0-62 time, Audi says this drivetrain gives the Q8 a range of more than 745 miles. Audi says the TFSI-based hybrid system will be used on a wide range of its models in the future. The Q8, meanwhile, is strongly tipped to spawn a production model which will go on sale around a year from now.
Peugeot’s second-generation 3008 has been named Car of the Year 2017. The new SUV has already been ordered by almost 100,000 customers across Europe – however only a few choose the Hybrid4 model, which is the sole version with all-wheel drive.
