JLR’s first plug-in hybrid
Words: Graham Scott
T
he new Range Rover Sport is the company’s first ever plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. It’s all part of the journey towards allowing the brand to have an electric choice across the board by 2020. It’s also part of an upgrade for the Sport that sees everything from the exterior styling to the interior infotainment systems enhanced. If you’re not that bothered by electric motors, then you could choose the latest Range Rover Sport SVR, which is the fastest Range Rover to date, with the ability to hit 60mph only 4.3sec from launch. It’s probably fair to say that the 570bhp SVR doesn’t claim emissions of 64g/km of
CO2 nor a combined fuel consumption of 101mpg. But the P400e does. It combines the 2.0-litre Ingenium petrol engine (with 295bhp) with an 85kW electric motor, giving a total of 400bhp. As ever with an electric element, there’s a ton of grunt from low down. With 472lb ft of torque there’s a great deal of go from any revs, meaning you can hit 60mph in 6.7sec on the way to a respectable top end of 137mph. You can run the big Sport on just electric energy for a claimed 31 miles, meaning you can cruise silently through London, emitting no emissions, and when you’re out on a motorway again the petrol engine will cut in to give you all the performance you need. Naturally there are modes for you to toggle between, but the
vehicle itself can handle most decisions on its own. With Terrain Response 2, the Range Rover Sport can calibrate the electric motor exactly for each wheel, giving intense control at low speeds off-road, reinforcing the Range Rover’s serious 4x4 capabilities. There are new exterior upgrades to signal this 2018 enhancement and inside the new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system is the most advanced the company has ever designed, and works through two high-def 10in touchscreens. Add in a dozen power points and a raft of new enhancements, and the new Range Rover Sport, particularly in ground-breaking P400e guise, looks like something to really look forward to, when deliveries start early next year.
Five-star Velar Words: Graham Scott There are many reasons to buy a Range Rover Velar, but the safety of loved ones on board is probably one of them. And if it isn’t, what sort of monster are you anyway? Assuming you’re now the selfish sort, epitomised
by Toad of Toad Hall careering flat out down the lanes, then you’ll be reassured that the Velar has just scored a full five stars in the latest Euro NCAP safety rating tests. Five is the maximum and the Velar nailed it, helped by a comprehensive array of active and passive safety
measures. These include (but, as lawyers carefully say, are not limited to): Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Reverse Traffic Detection, Lane Keep Assist, Drive Condition Monitor, Intelligent Speed Limiter and Traffic Sign Recognition. If somehow anyone gets through all that lot, and the worst happens, then the crash tests show the results are going to be as painless as possible, not just for the Velar occupants, but others involved in the collision. The numbers show adult occupant protection at 93%, child occupant protection at 85% and pedestrian protection at 74%. So that’s another box ticked on your list as to why you should buy the fourth Range Rover. And of course it shows you care. You really, really care. What a lovely, caring person you are.

Next Year’s Range Rover
S
Words: Graham Scott
igh, it’s nearly that time of year again, when we start using the C-word. But this Christmas, if you happen to know any billionaires who have asked you what you want, you can at least give them a sensible and short list. The new Range Rover, with deliveries starting in early 2018. The fact that you won’t have it Christmas Day may be acceptable. Because it looks pretty fabulous. This fourth-generation machine continues
down the technological route the company has been on for some time. While the Range Rover Sport was the first vehicle the company has announced with a petrol-electric hybrid option, the new Range Rover is close behind with its own version of the P400E. But of course the technology doesn’t end there. Let’s hop inside. Sit down. You’re sitting in a wider, softer seat with 24-way adjustment, with heated and cooled functions as well as heated arm, foot and calf rests. You can recline your seat up to 40 de-
grees and can control it remotely by an app should you be so inclined. So that’s just the seats, but the whole cabin has had a similar attention to detail. As with the new Range Rover Sport, there are the two high-definition touchscreens in the centre, forming the Touch Pro Duo, although we’re quite taken with their codename of ‘Blade’. You can swipe info from one screen to another and generally act like something out of Blade Runner 2049. Sun getting on the screen? A gesture in front of the rear-view mirror and the sunblind closes. You sigh contentedly, breathing in the ionised air, thanks to the cabin air ionisation system. But perhaps you need to sit in the back and do some work. There are 17 connection points including domestic plug sockets, USB, HDMI, a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot for up to eight devices and lots of storage. Getting stressed doing the work? Time to start one of the 25 massage programmes in the seat backs thanks to the Hot Stone technology. At some point you have to actually go somewhere in the new Range Rover, and then you’ll discover that, like the Range Rover Sport, there is a petrol-electric hybrid version, the P400e.
This combines the 2.0-litre petrol Ingenium four-cylinder engine with an 85kW electric motor. With 400bhp on tap, that’s quite sufficient, while emitting a claimed 64g/km of CO2. Electric-only range is quoted as 31 miles, and in this mode the Range Rover would be the pinnacle of whisper-quiet luxury motoring. But Terrain Response 2 works closely with the drive to each axle, so you could just as easily go off-road in this mode, with the vehicle offering very tight control of the wheels. That way you’d be doing that mantra of leaving little trace of your passing. You can achieve a full recharge in 2hrs 45mins if you use the 32-amp
wall box at home. The vehicle comes as standard with a 10-amp cable, and with that you can charge it fully overnight, a touch under eight hours. The battery itself has a 100,000-mile, eight-year, 70% state of health warranty. But if you feel you’d quite like to save the polar bears and some sort of green algae that’s apparently important but, on reflection, what you’d really like is a socking great supercharged V8, then there is the Range Rover SVAutobiography Dynamic. Power is up to 557bhp, allowing you to shift from rest to 60mph in only 5.1sec. You might need to go up to a higher seat massage setting after that. Well, that’s Christmas sorted then.

t’s incredible how much time we Brits will devote to discussing the weather. I find it fascinating how so many conversations stem from what is essentially a void topic. The weather is rubbish. End of. Now let’s move on with our lives. For starters, now we’ve cleared that all up, perhaps it’s worth investigating the type of activities one can do whilst indoors, rather outside battling the elements... oh, like the Great British Land Rover Show. That’ll work. There’s a strong chance that you’ve heard the GBLRS is back at the end of November on Sunday 26, what with their being a show guide in this issue of The Landy and us blazing it over the front cover and whatnot. Still, in all seriousness, it promises to be a crackin’ exhibition of all things bright and Land Rover. Read on through this mag and you’ll eventually reach the show guide where you can start to develop a taste for what we’ll have under the covers of the NAEC at Stoneleigh Park. Yes, the various stalls will be inside, as will the Land Rover line-up and workshop tutorials being hosted by NWS Motor Services – but there is an off-road course ready for when you want to deploy your very own Green Oval. Given that tickets are flying out as we speak, if you haven’t booked yours yet, I suggest you get onto it rather sharpish. It’s going to be a great way to round off the year and there will be plenty on offer to give you project ideas for the winter. I’ll be there come rain or shine. Will you? Scottish Landy gig hits the spot Words: George Dove Pictures: Melanie Lewis and Ken Bottomley

sea of Land Rovers of all shapes and sizes swept over the scenic Monachyle Mhor Hotel in Scotland for the
debut of Defender Jam over the August Bank Holiday. Landies from all over congregated to celebrate and share their love for the Green Oval at the family orientated, one-day festival. With the hotel as its hub, the festival was bustling with life. Street food
of all varieties went down a treat, as did the odd craft beer, while families took in the fabulous array of historic and modified Landies, showcased in the barns of the estate. Stalls spoilt enthusiasts for choice by offering merchandise and a forum to buy and sell used parts. The glorious summer day saw green laning en masse, as hordes of attendees made the most of the Mhor grounds’ trails, led by their local guide and his beloved Series II. Being a family event, radio controlled vehicles and mini Landies meant that the smaller fans were not left twiddling their thumbs. These, along with the outdoor cinema, ensured there was something for everyone at this ‘Fender festival. As night drew in, Defender Jam had one more trick up its sleeve for the night dwellers. The Disco Very disco barn opened to help the Landy faithful throw some shapes, with a DJ booth
mounted atop an old Series number providing music to accompany the ales and wine. Many who had made the trip to the festival camped or stayed in the boutique hotel, and were treated to more great food in the form of a late
breakfast barbeque on the Sunday before festivities concluded. Fret not, though, as organisers are already looking ahead to next year’s event. One thing is for sure – this is one jam that will be to every Land Rover fan’s taste.

At all major 4x4 shows across the UK, next show: Great British Land Rover Show, Stoneleigh, Warks - 26 November
t this year’s Great British Land Rover Show, the guys from engine specialist NWS Motor Services will be exhibiting their expertise over three live workshops during the day at Stoneleigh Park. The company excels in reconditioning engines and will offer a unique insight into their work that has helped restore no end of Green Oval machines to their brilliant best. Specifically, the NWS team will be showing you exactly what problems arise in the engine bays of Land Rovers, highlighting particularly problematic components and advising how best to avoid failures on your own pride and joy.
Joining them on Sunday 26 November is the star of the children’s Landybook series — Landy himself. Alongside Landy will be author Veronica Lamond, who will be signing copies of her books on sale at the show.
Brought to you by Lancaster Insurance, a hand-picked Land Rover Walkway will open the show. The lineup will consist of various Land Rovers ranging from restored Series motors to the latest metal from Solihull. The two halls will be full to the rafters with leading exhibitors and businesses, including the event’s headline sponsor, Rimmer Bros. The Land Rover parts distributor will be with the other stalls, showcasing the best gear for you and your Land Rover that will ensure you are ready for any exploits in the workshop. While the majority of the show is indoors, you may wish to venture outside to view the Land Rover parking zones, or get in your own Land Rover and take it around the 2.4-mile offroad course. Advanced show tickets are running out, but some are still available for £7.50 each, and off-road course tickets set at £10 per driver. Pre-booking these will avoid pay-on-the-day tariffs. To grab your tickets head to greatbritishlrshow.com, where you can also find more information on what to look forward to on the day.

Landy goes Live
W
hen it comes to story time in your house, your children may have come across the tale of ‘Landy’. And now, the loveable character created by Veronica Lamond is moving from the page to the screen. The star of the Landybook series has made his debut on YouTube as part of Veronica’s first video venture, bringing to life the original ‘Landy’ narrative. Produced down in Cornwall, the film also features Veronica’s hand drawn illustrations, with the author herself narrating the story in this ten-minute blockbuster. Speaking about the production of the film, she said, ‘I hope everyone has as much fun watching this animation as I had making it — watching Landy come alive was quite special!’ The video retells the endearing story, describing how Jack came to know Landy as a young boy, before he decides to fettle away on his best friend years later to help him back onto all four wheels. There’s even ‘Landy’s Song’, which you can sing along to at the end. This online production is a precursor for the upcoming ‘Landy & Friends’ merchandise range being launched later this year by Exmoor Trim, with Veronica working alongside the company to help design an exciting range of products for children. In the meantime, search for ‘Landy and Friends’ on YouTube, and gather the kids around for a bedtime story that will do anything but put them to sleep.

Words: Graham Scott ast month we brought you news of the Eastnor Explorer launch, where you could experience the rugged terrain where many Green Oval vehicles as well as Camel Trophy teams were refined and trained. And now Land Rover has gone one better. To be precise it’s the Jaguar Land Rover Classic part of the empire which has launched the Classic Drive experience. This marries up some very desirable elements, including some early, indeed classic, Land Rovers and Range Rovers with the challenging but very gorgeous Eastnor Castle grounds. It must be said that we read through the official material with a faintly cynical eye. Right, like they’re going to let someone get behind the wheel of an early Series I, to drive round the mud and axle-twisters of Eastnor? But, well, to put it bluntly, yes they will. Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire has 5000 acres to play in, acres that include some famously challenging slopes, holes, side slopes and mud. And that is the playground for the Land Rover Classic Drive experience. You can get behind the wheel of an early Series I, a Series III, and a first-generation Range Rover Classic. At Eastnor. That sounds distinctly epic, but that’s not all. As part of the package you can also drive around on-road in some Jaguar legends, such as a Series 1 and a Series 3 E-Type and an Inspector Morse Mk2. While that may not attract the off-roader in you quite so much, who could turn down the offer of discovering for yourself the famous Jaguar ‘grace, pace and space’. Note we’re not bothering with a question mark there. Tim Hannig, Director of Land Rover Classic, summed it up well. ‘The Eastnor estate has played a huge part in shaping our business, so to be able to bring a selection of our legends together in such a significant location is a real privilege. It’ll be a trip back in time and an experience that only Jaguar Land Rover’s incredible heritage can offer.’ The day will cost £495 per driver and if you want to book for yourself or, yeah, someone you like, then call: 0333 733 3003 or go to: experience. landrover.com

Winter Wax Well that was good wasn’t it? Summer. And winter doesn’t even officially start until about a week before Christmas. And it’s often a very mild winter too. So that’ll be fine then. Or it’ll be the other thing. If your pride and joy is even slightly elderly with less than pristine paintwork, then the winter can be really hard on it. Sure, there’s lots of rain and maybe snow and almost certainly ice,
but that’s not the worst part. That’s all the salt the councils put down, the abrasive materials that coat your paintwork and scratch around there for days, drawing in moisture, since winter is really rust’s best friend. We tend to wax our vehicles more in summer but with winter coming along a good coating of a good wax, like Autoglym’s HD Wax, will help keep your Land Rover in better shape to endure

I defy anyone to look at the picture of this thing and not make ‘swishing a light sabre’ noise. The Star Blade – the clue is in the name – is a thin LED inspection light, ideal for probing into those little nooks and crannies with which your Land Rover is blessed in abundance. It’s got a hook to hang it up, or it can sit on its magnetic base or you can just use it to try to find
where that leak is actually coming from, deep in the engine bay. It’s got a 5m beam with 300 lumens and the light doesn’t reflect back at you, which is neat. But, hell, who are we kidding, you’re already pondering buying two of them, and then working out how to make one have blue light, and the other one red. Whum, whum. www.nightsearcher.co.uk
the months ahead. If it’s put on right it forms a translucent barrier for up to six months, so one big application should do it. It’s not cheap stuff, at £47.15 a tin, but think how easy your conscience will be when you hear that cold rain clattering against the windows, knowing your Land Rover is as well protected as it can be, and it will clean up nicely for spring.

What a Carry On Own a Land Rover and want people to be aware of that fact when you’re not driving it? You can of course wear a ‘I OWN A LAND ROVER’ T-shirt but this is a more subtle form of advertising your driving allegiance. It’s a carry-on case, as in a case you can carry on to a plane as hand luggage, rather than any sort of homage to Sid James and Barbara Windsor. It’s made of high-quality black leather in several grains and treatments, with subtle satin silver finishes to the metalwork, with grey Alcantara interior. Classy then, and not remotely Frankie Howerd. Noooo. There’s even a cotton Land Rover drawstring bag included, as well as subtle logo work on the outside. Okay, so it’s not much of a product push since it doesn’t end well for them, but hopefully if you had something similar nobody would be trying to shoot you. But then, what do I really know about your life? These Spectre Mach 5 wheels are indeed made by the same people who made the originals for the film.

Weller Wheels now makes these huge and impressive steel wheels with those distinctive 27 hex nuts round the rim to help the 37in Maxxis Trepador tyres grip the rim and the surface at low pressures. They’re pretty rugged in a sophisticated sort of way aren’t they? And they come with restrictions too, like they’re only sold for off-road use and they’re a special order only. That makes them sound even more attractive. They’re £419.99 so they’ll not be a common sight at the average offroad day either. or show standard. The stuff uses abrasives to get rid of contaminants, then brings it up to a mirror finish while the chemical cleaning action helps dissolve fuel, oil and soot. There’s a final finish in the form of a sealing ingredient that stops tarnishing happening again.

‘Now wash your hands.’ The number of times we get that instruction in a lifetime. But it’s a good one, and never more relevant than when we’ve just finished tinkering with our pride and joy or, failing that, messing about with the Land Rover. It’s worth remembering that vehicles need some substances to work properly that are really not good for us – oils, lubes, fluids, all sorts. We need to remove that stuff
off our hands when we’ve finished or it can cause health issues – and it’s another reason why that other instruction, ‘Will you stop biting your nails’, is such a good one. Some of the hand cleaning gels and liquids work fine, but they’re not much better for the environment than some of the liquids they’re cleaning off. So the Worx All Natural Hand Cleaner would be worth dipping your finger in.
It’s easy to put on and rub off and a 100ml bottle, which costs £9.80 + VAT, should give you 20 cleans if you’re just focusing on the backbox and trims of your exhaust system, so it should go a fair way, whatever you’re cleaning. Check it out at www. millteksport.com
It’s plant based, 100% biodegradable and certified as an environmentally responsible product. Which is great, but it’s also really good at getting all that harmful stuff off your hands so there’s no downside to using the stuff. It’s £9.00 for a 6.5oz bottle, or you could get a 4.5lb tub of it for £42.00 if you’re particularly messy. Get your hands on it through Damar International: www.damar.biz

More and more people are getting used to having some sort of recording of their life, often at even the most mundane of moments – check out Facebook if you need reminding. But dash cams have proven useful at times and now Garmin has gone one better, and made this Virb 360, which is a 360-degree camera. With a 360-degree video camera you can obviously immerse yourself completely in the experience, aided further by the four microphones which point in every direction and the impressive 5.7k resolution. The Virb 360 is more than tough enough to cope with the rugged world of Land Rovers, highlighted by the fact that it’s waterproof down to 10m – so rather deeper than your Landy is waterproof to. It’s easy to record and then edit using the software that comes with it, so there’s no excuse for you not producing something that could be mistaken for an Attenborough programme. Just try and get that dry, whispery tone on the voiceover. Just remember that you can’t stand behind the camera making faces when recording. Will somebody get the door? If you’ve got a Series II or IIA then you’re a lucky person aren’t you? But there are times when your classic Land Rover needs a bit of work. Perhaps the metal moth has been at work and you need to have some doors that are not nearly 60 years old, but which are, in fact, all new and shiny. Maybe you had an argument with another vehicle or a fast-moving tree, whatever the reason, Britpart has the solution. Britpart is selling new Series Doors for II and IIA models, complete with unglazed window and door bottom. They come in left and right guises, and if that causes confusion then please ask a friend before ordering. (Hint: the right door is the one you bang with your elbow.)

Britpart is also selling Series Front Floorplates which again will require a decision over left and right, and it gets more complicated as these are

This is the ‘Nolden LED headlights Generation 2 with DRL’. We used to have headlights, now we have acronyms. LED wasn’t a problem but it took a moment to work out that DRL stands for daytime running lights. But you knew that. These new 7in LED main headlights now include an economical LED daytime running light and an LED position light, which uses fibre-optic technology. They’re very bright, very legal and very smart. They should have over 30,000 hours of LED life – that’s about three and a half years of constant burning. At my age I’m not sure that isn’t a speculative investment. Cost? £665.00. Lots of things fade in the winter – tans, optimism, hope, that sort of thing. And of course light. Which makes the Sealey LED360 Range promotion very timely, since now you can get good prices on things like the LED3604 Series. These are slimline rechargeable inspection lamps that have a rotary switch releasing up to 600 lumens. There’s a neat and patented swivel and tilt head so that you can get the light angled just where you want it. They’re also available in a nice bright green, red or slightly less bright black. But if you need more light on the scene then the rechargeable portable floodlights would be the thing. Also with a tilt and swivel function, they have 3000 lumens to blast at whatever it is that is trying to hide away in the dark. Have a gander at the Sealey promotion here: www.sealey.co.uk, although as far as we know they don’t do any SAD lamps, which is indeed sad.

Guardians of the Green Oval
We who own Land Rovers have a duty to the Green Oval marque: to protect and preserve these wonderful vehicles and safeguard them for decades – and even centuries – to come
Words and Pictures: Mike Trott

ach and every one of you reading this newspaper will have a fondness for old-school Land Rovers. We’ve all been sold by their charm and the way they go about their rugged, agricultural lives, epitomising the no-nonsense demeanour. In modern cars, there is so much more screening to separate you from the various mechanicals working behind the scenes, whereas a Land Rover pulls you in and opens itself
up to let you enjoy the most raw of automotive experiences. We are part of a community that praises a unique collection of vehicles, machines that have often been imitated, but never duplicated. But while we like to use them as off-roaders, as workhorses, or maybe just as pleasurable Sunday drivers, many have already become classics in their own right with other models quickly following suit.
It means we need to shoulder the responsibility of preserving them, just like you would a historical piece of literature or an exquisite piece of art. I know what I’d rather have lying around come the next millennium. While it would be great to save every Land Rover that is still bumbling around Britain’s highways – and highways beyond our shores too – we have to be realistic and face the fact that not all will follow us into the next gen-

eration. So maybe we should start to prioritise? Perhaps those with a richer history should be first on the lifeboat? Military Land Rovers have always enjoyed their own following, often by ex-servicemen and women who used them during operations overseas and find they yearn for a fix of a Green Oval when back in the world of the civvies. It’s the kind of story Wayne Wood can relate to, having served in the Territorial Army for 20 years and concluding his time with the forces back in 2010. While serving Queen and country, Land Rovers were naturally commonplace around the barracks and training grounds, but the Land Rover Wayne owns today is not – and is one Land Rover that should certainly be given a seat on the lifeboat. The vehicle in question is an ex-Cyprus XD Wolf GS, also called a TUL (Truck Utility Light – a TUM is based upon the 110 with the ‘Light’ exchanged for ‘Medium’). ‘Although I’ve had Land Rovers for years, before I bought this I had been without one for a while and found myself wanting to get another,’ says Wayne. ‘I was looking around and had narrowed it down to a short-wheelbase Defender, but most of the ones I Continued overleaf

was looking at in my price range were basket cases. ‘There were some ex-military ones around, though, so I started to look at them as an option. I spotted an advert with a Wolf 90 in; went to have a look, it was low on mileage, and had spent its entire working life in Cyprus, so was going to be about as good as you could get rust-wise.’ Following a test drive where Wayne confirmed to himself he’d be leaving with a Wolf, the only obstacle was the price. But while it was a little more than he wanted to pay, the condition and exclusivity was such that Wayne figured it was worth the investment. Green Ovals branded as Wolfs were made in limited numbers and had a raft of enhancements over the civilian equivalents, which has helped them earn the reputation of being the best Land Rovers ever made. Wayne certainly believes so. ‘The chassis is stronger and uses thicker steel, the axles were upgraded and use a 24-spline shaft, plus there’s other areas that have been significantly beefed up like the wheels and suspension,’ explains Wayne. ‘Having a 300Tdi engine is a bonus. Yes, there are limitations, like a Td5 unit is more tuneable – but I like it.

‘My Wolf is by far the most reliable Land Rover I’ve ever owned, too,’ adds Wayne. ‘Other than having to change the power-steering pump and renewing the exhaust with a stainless steel one, the rest has just been wearable parts like the brakes and tyres.’ Wayne’s Wolf has also received a respray and its owner was adamant about keeping the original pattern. Not that Wayne sees himself as an owner anyway. ‘I see myself as a guardian of the vehicle rather than an owner. I think it’s the same philosophy that runs throughout the club (the Ex-Military Land Rover Association). It’s our job to preserve them and their history.’ If you look at the history of this particular Wolf, you’ll find it was used by the Military Training Wing on the Sovereign Base Area, situated in the North East of Cyprus. ‘It will have been used around the training grounds, much like you get at Salisbury Plain,’ describes Wayne. ‘It’s a place where the army can provide a broad range of military training and it will have given troops a hot environment in which to acclimatise for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Lots of guys would stop off there before and after, with the latter being

something they call “decompression”, allowing soldiers back from operations the chance to wind down before returning to a civilian environment by taking advantage of the local sports and adventure training amenities.’ When you consider what some of the Wolf Land Rovers have been through and what they have enabled our fellow countrymen to do, it seems the least we can do is see to it they are well looked after. Wayne says: ‘In my earlier career I used more HGVs, but as I moved up through the ranks I was given my own Defender to run about in, using regular Defenders for training and the Wolfs during operations.’ For Wayne, who has participated in overseas tours himself, the appreciation for military Land Rovers only really started after leaving the TA. ‘I finished service in 2010 and bought the vehicle in 2012. I’ve always liked Land Rovers; the functionality of them. But the military versions go that step further,’ states Wayne. ‘I’d say I’m big into them now, and more so now I’m out the military. Walking around the base, you’d pass one and wouldn’t think anything of it. Now I’m in the club I’m more aware of their history.’ And Wayne is exactly the type of guardian this Wolf deserves, because being his only vehicle he needs to look after it. ‘If I need to go to the shops, I take this. If I need to do a bit of gardening work and load up a vehicle, it’s this. I really use it. I’m careful where I park of course, as any Defender owner is these days.’ The Wolf in front of you remains true to its time in Cyprus and that has been made possible with a guardian like Wayne. ‘There are no other plans for the vehicle, with everything I wanted to do – like the respray – being done in the first couple of years of ownership. Other than that I just want to keep driving it and looking after it.’ With Wayne and fellow EMLRA club members alike proving to be the inspirational vanguard preserving these old relics, the future – and history – of military Land Rovers looks to be in good hands.

‘It did at least look like it would be able to handle a puddle!’
Teenage Fantasy
Words and Pictures: Mike Trott
Remember that Land Rover you always wanted as a teenager? Not all of us get to that point of owning our dream ride – but some people, like Steve Murfitt, definitely do. It’s just not an everyday dream, that’s all…
I
n your earlier years, you’re subjected to a period in your life where any dream can appear to be in reach. You’re told that the world is your oyster and you can be whatever you want to be, whether that’s being an astronaut for NASA or a footballer for MUFC – you decide which acronym you want to be affiliated with. For some of you reading these wise words, you may have picked up your love of Land Rovers from around this time of life. Some of you may have even dreamed of being a Land Rover yourself, with your parents struggling to make you understand that a human lives on fish fingers and greens,
whereas a machine certainly does not. Put a cape on, though, and you can be Captain Underpants. I know him well. Whatever superhero or machine you chose to morph into as a child, as a teenager you’ll have imagined what it would be like the first time you drive a Land Rover on the open road, fresh from securing your driving licence. It can be those early experiences with vehicles that shape the type of adult we will become and what passions we will derive pleasure from. At the age of 15, a teenage boy may have a number of passions, as well as a desire to own a Land Rover. Steve Murfitt knows all about being seduced by the Green Oval charm as a
teenager, and it’s part of the reason he now owns the rather unusual vehicle you see here. ‘When I left school at 15, I used to work for a guy and we drove round the country doing bits of work in it,’ tells Steve. When Steve says ‘it’, he isn’t actually referring to this exact Land Rover – but it did light the spark inside him to one day own a Series IIB Forward Control. As an adolescent, Steve only experienced the nature of a IIB from the passenger seat. Today, however, now at the youthful age of 60, he rides in his own Forward Control and is the one responsible for where it’s headed. So is the grass always greener?
Above: Like all Series Land Rovers, leaf springs were required to help transport heavy loads from place to place – and Forward Controls were likely to see more work than any Below Left: The Series IIB received special wheel-steps to enable entry to the cab

Above: Some years ago, this side of the vehicle was merely a dream. But today Steve rules his own Series IIB from – quite literally – the right side of the vehicle. It’s taken a good few years, but a dream has been realised… sort of Steve confirms, ‘Now I’ve got mine, it’s not quite how I remember!’ He giggles to himself like a man who knew this might turn out to be the case. ‘Of course, back then I was a passenger in the truck and I wasn’t driving the thing. ‘The one we travelled in was a six-cylinder petrol, so it was faster than the model I have.’ Three engines were placed into the Series IIB over the years, with none of them establishing a reputation for neck-wrenching power. But considering this was a real workhorse of a vehicle, it was something that was never of major concern. Even so, Steve’s Forward Control is a relatively early 1963 version running on its original 2.25-litre diesel motor, the noisiest and least powerful of the engines offered in the IIB. So when
you ask Steve to sum up how it feels to now drive his dream Land Rover, he has one word for you. ‘Slow,’ says Steve bluntly. He pauses for a moment. ‘I mean, I wouldn’t say it’s uncomfortable, because the 109” wheelbase helps it to ride okay. But certainly you don’t want to do any more than 40mph in it.’ I don’t press Steve on whether the reason is because that actually is the IIB’s terminal velocity. It’s hardly going to cut through the air in a streamlined fashion, and that’s just another reason Steve, you and I like them. ‘At the time, I think what impressed me was that it looked like an amphibious vehicle. It wasn’t, but it at least looked like it could handle a puddle,’ says Steve in a very dry delivery. ‘I’d always wanted one, and it didn’t particularly matter which one. This
one happened to be local to me, and it was only because of that that I went to have a look.’ As a teenager, Steve used to assist in using the Land Rover’s winch in order to lay down cables and pull them into position, just like the kind you see wrapped around humongous drums. It was a time when Land Rovers worked like Land Rovers should. And now Steve’s IIB is in need of a little work, too. ‘I wasn’t after one that had been restored or needed restoring – this one is pretty original and I didn’t mind the fact it wasn’t the tidiest,’ says Steve. ‘It wants to have a new chassis at some point, that’s the next big thing. I want it to be 100%, and would like to get the mechanicals just right; perhaps add power-steering to help me these days. I wouldn’t want to change the Continued overleaf

bodywork, though, because it is very straight and I’d like to keep the patina, as it’s part of its history.’ Okay, so the sensation of driving the Forward Control isn’t quite the same as winning vast riches on the Euromillions, but there’s a reason why Steve won’t be letting go of his very own golden ticket. ‘I’ve always had Land Rovers around me: Series Is, IIs, IIIs and Defenders. them, but when you do, you soon find yourself hankering for another!’ It may have taken 45 years to get hold of one and it may not be as perfect in person now that Steve enters the IIB from the other side – however, there comes a moment when every dream must be disturbed by reality. For Steve, though, he is one of the few people out there that can say he owns his dream. He runs a vehicle he looked up to as a teenager and chased down his fantasy like an astronaut rocketing towards Mars. That’s a reality worth waking up for.

A series of Series

It’s not always about driving your Land Rover up the steepest incline or through the most congealed ground imaginable. Sometimes it’s about the thrill of completing a project – and immediately feeling the hunger to get stuck into another
T
here are some folk out there who will have owned the same Land Rover for multiple decades. Perhaps they bought it in their late teens and have been unable to part with it ever since – a bit like that ‘special’ piece of literature they still keep under their bed. Whatever method of satisfaction you use, I’m sure plenty of you out there can relate to Mark Laidler. He can’t just stick with the same Land Rover year after year, and can you really blame him? Imagine if it was a T-shirt, owned since you were 21. Sure, it may be a favourite and you may have had some good times in it, but wouldn’t it be better to change it up every once in a while, if not for yourself then maybe for those in close proximity to you?
We join Mark now as the owner of a Series IIA Ambulance converted for camping duties. It was built in 1971, and is an ex-military vehicle that first sampled civilian life once registered in 1977. It’s a Land Rover that has led a colourful life and to decipher what the vehicle has actually been through, you need Mark sat down with a cup of tea. Milk and no sugar for me, ta. ‘This is something I came across last August when, once again, I happened to be on the lookout for a project,’ says Mark with a wry smile. With his bold Geordie accent, it makes Mark sound ever the naughty teenager, like he knows it’s a bad habit. But do you think he cares? ‘I saw the Land Rover on eBay and made a daft offer for it – lo and behold

We’re on Facebook: www.facebook.com/thelandyuk the guy accepted it!’ says Mark. ‘Since I’ve owned it, the plan was to get it back into a more roadworthy condition and get it through its MOT.’ Mark has managed just that, but before we run you through how he’s left his, errr, mark, there is some background info you should know. This Land Rover has been put to useful service at some point in its life and I can reveal that the vehicle was a former St John Ambulance machine, used in particular for mountain rescue operations. Don’t be fooled by the RAF touches, they stem from Mark’s own personal affiliation with the military, where for a number of years he served as a driver for the Royal Air Force. So it’s a Land Rover that favours hills rather than plains (and planes), but then so do most of Solihull’s exports. Based on information that Mark has been able to dig up, it would appear that the ambulance was used in the Brecon Beacons, although for the Land Rover itself that’s like me and you walking to the end of our street. In another stage of its life, a company called The Overlanders owned Mark’s Series machine. Now
you needn’t guess what they used the Land Rover for, but you might find it incredible that this old Land Rover has travelled to and explored the astounding continent of South America. Safe to say that this Land Rover isn’t frightened of a challenge – and neither is Mark. ‘I did indeed get my first Land Rover in my teens, it was a Series II, I didn’t know a lot about them and it really was quite rotten,’ Mark explains. It needed a fair amount of work and, with the extensive list of Green Ovals Mark has owned since, it would suggest he’s now well acquainted with their traits. ‘Series vehicles, Lightweights, ambulances – I’ve had a load of them over the years. They are all getting harder to find now, but I like the military vehicles, they are actually cheaper to insure and more desirable with people when you come to move them on,’ adds Mark. ‘That’s what I do. I buy a Land Rover to do it up, run it for a year or so and then sell it on to get another.’ Prior to reaching Mark, this vehicle had been put through a renovation last year while with Black Paw 4x4. While

There was a different set-up here previously – one for globetrotting rather than camping. But you can never say a Land Rover isn’t versatile!

in the workshop, the ambulance had its engine swapped for a 200Tdi lump with an LT77 five-speed gearbox also being recruited. In the rear, the previous set-up as used by The Overlanders had been ripped out and replaced with a fresh canvas for someone to start from scratch with. Mark, wishing to use it on the odd camping excursion with his boys, decided to add a basic sleeping arrangement, enough for three, with a 240v hook-up cable and a wealth of storage compartments. ‘When it came to me it needed generally checking over, so I gave it a good service, changed the fuel lines and brake pads and also changed the transfer box to a Discovery unit, too,

which gives high ratios for better cruising,’ continues Mark. The Land Rover got through its MOT like it was charging over the Beacons to rescue a stranded soul and it has now got the basis to be a great little holiday truck. For Mark, his next project is already waiting: an RAF Crash Ambulance. ‘For me, with my connection to the RAF, it holds more of a sentiment,’ smiles Mark. With his next 12 months already planned, the RAF Land Rover will be keeping him on his toes doing its best to satisfy his fettling desires. Who knows how long it will last – but don’t be surprised if Mark eventually starts to look elsewhere for his sat-is-fac-tion.
Before Mark became the owner of this fine ambulance, the Series Land Rover was put through theatre and given a 200Tdi unit by the surgeons at Black Paw 4x4. Much better for cruising speeds and therefore longer distances – like when travelling to South America, perhaps

Strictly Discovery
Words and Pictures: Mike Trott
The old Discovery was the consummate all-rounder – it had all the moves covered. And now the new Disco has had time to get its feet under the table, can this latest number still be the entertainer for every occasion? Above Left: Talking to some of the people we’ve met whilst running the Discovery, there seems to be a real divide in how people view the back end of this new model. If there’s one feature about this vehicle that resembles Marmite, it’s that one
Below Left: Looks clean, doesn’t it, that Sd4 engine. If we’re honest, it is clean. The Discovery returns decent figures for something of its size – both in terms of economy... and performance
A
pparently, there is some show on TV at the moment called Strictly Come Dancing. I wouldn’t know because I’m not a 55-year-old lady. But I would know because Mollie King from The Saturdays is participating this year. Or so I’m told. Anyway, I’ve been thinking that a Land Rover Discovery is a bit like the celebrity who will win this year’s Strictly Come Tanning. Crazy individual aren’t I, but there is method in the madness. You see, to win such a competition you need to be an all-rounder: there’s no point in nailing the foxtrot if your jive turns out to be a dive.
Now this year’s Strictly winner (vote Mollie) will be someone who can master each discipline and perform to the highest level. A Discovery should do the same. When the Mark V Disco started to waltz onto UK roads earlier this year, there were assumptions we could safely make. We knew it would look good, like all Land Rovers, and that it would be big, good off-road and have enough toys to talk the talk. But to be as good as its predecessor, the Discovery would need to have substance. There’s no point in looking like Miss King, if you’re going to dance like the Rev. Britain needs a winner, not a Simon Rimmer.
To advertise in The Landy, call our team on 01283 553244 w w w. t h e l a n d y. c o . u k We’re on Facebook: www.facebook.com/thelandyuk The latest Disco has been on a crash diet and as a result the Discovery drives as well as ever. It still has the moves, even if it continues its march towards the more premium end of the automotive market. But while our initial encounter with this latest Disco showed there to be no obvious flaws, while consolidating our opinion that it still has all the characteristics a Discovery should have, there were one or two questions that needed answering. We’ve now racked up considerably more mileage with the new Discovery 5 and I’m happy to report that all our concerns have been answered. Now I could leave it there and go catch up on Strictly, but then I’d probably be rightfully accused of being a pretty rubbish journalist. So, when we first drove the Disco 5, a 3.0-litre Td6 engine was laid out before me and it didn’t take long to impress, with its abundance of torque and copious amounts of power. Back when the Discovery 3 was launched, people praised Land Rover for putting a suitably sized power plant under its bonnet. So when news of a Continued overleaf

2.0-litre four-pot diesel being the entry-level unit for the Disco 5 cropped up, I started to have some sleepless nights. Would a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine be enough? It’s like the dancing outfits our celebrity friends’ wear there needs to be enough sequins to dazzle the audience. I took the Discovery down to Dorset over the August bank holiday in what turned out to be an 832-mile vacation. The 2.0 Sd4 engine would have a chance to showcase its talents – or lack of them – while we could also see whether today’s Discovery is still capable of roughing it in typical British holiday fashion. So, in went the camping gear (rather easily it must be said) before a quick prod on the 10.2in touchscreen to tell the Discovery where we were trying to reach. Heading to the Jurassic Coast gave enough motorway time to conclude that the Discovery has a refined cabin; it feels unbelievably relaxed even when

you turn up the pace from American smooth to Brazilian samba, and it may well be one of the best vehicles on four wheels to cover miles in. My better half was certainly sold by the dual-view screen in the front, allowing her to watch TV while I could keep an eye on the navigation so it could shout at me when I missed my exit. As for the engine, I needn’t have lost so much precious sleep. It may be a 2.0-litre four-pot, but with 240hp to utilise from the twin-scroll turbocharged motor, plus a thumping 368 lb ft of torque, this Ingenium power plant is all the engine you’ll ever need in a Discovery. On long, uphill dual carriageway climbs where clearing the crawling HGVs is essential, the eight-speed ZF ‘box made no quibbles about dropping a cog or two and firing the turbos into action. These diesel Ingenium engines really can shift when you get them in the groove – a bit like Miss King.
Below: The Discovery has a new Intelligent Seat Fold system, all operated electrically via the control panel in the boot. There’s a small fridge compartment suitable for chilling your water – or burgers. And you can select what type of massage you’d like from your seat
The infotainment system looks great, but is not so accustomed to speed, and although I like the Sd4, its fuel economy was underwhelming. In the Sd4’s defence, however, an average of 31.0mpg in Dorset where a heavy right foot is required on virtually every journey in order to clear some sort of incline, it’s not too shabby. On my commute I received more like 35mpg and arrived at work with the temperament of someone who’s just got out of a bubble bath. It’s a large vehicle, the D5. There was no discreet entry to Morrisons’ car park or to the campsite field when we first arrived, especially seeing as it was dusk and the LED lights on the Discovery are brilliant. I wish we’d still got the proper tailgate on the rear, but they were right to still give us a shelf of some description, with the organising of the boot likely to become difficult without. Organising a mini BBQ is no problem for the Discovery, though. We packed the small fridge compartment with burgers, sausages and other
grillable items, and they stayed cool until we found a pathway we could walk down to the beach. The Disco 5 was the ideal travel companion. On a weekly commute it sees you safely to work with gadgets to combat different seasons. In the rear you’ve always got space and seats to spare, and more often than not a way in which to keep kids entertained. For a camping holiday, weekends away or adventures further afield – there is nothing the Discovery can’t handle. It keeps all occupants in the greatest levels of comfort. It will aid you along your journey, whether that means calling upon it for navigational advice or whether you need to employ Land Rover’s most capable off-roader. The Sd4 engine is particularly superb, with accessible everyday performance and a chassis that gives a virtually peerless riding experience. There is no occasion that the new Discovery can’t cope with. This is still a Discovery through and through. This Discovery is still a winner. PS: Vote Mollie.

Bros got your Back R
aised in County Durham and apprenticed as mechanical engineers in Tyneside, two brothers, Bill and Graham Rimmer, started out by buying, tinkering and fettling their own Triumphs. Later, in 1982, they founded Rimmer Bros., which operated from modest buildings at the family home in Lincolnshire. Those were the days when they bought, sold, restored, serviced and provided parts for Triumph, doing all the work themselves, for they had no other staff. The business then grew and many years later, the brothers still own the company they founded, where they now have a loyal, expert and hard-working staff of 65 people to keep the wheels turning. Expansion seems to have been continuous during that time, such that the company HQ at Bracebridge Heath, near Lincoln, now includes 105,000 sq ft of storage space, tens of thousands of stock lines, millions of parts - and now covers the Triumph, MG, Rover, Mini, Rover SD1, Land Rover, Range Rover and Jaguar (1998 onwards) ranges. For years it has been one of the ‘classic’ industry’s leading concerns, which not only offers many parts which can often not
be found anywhere else in the world, but backs this with an amazing record of technical expertise, and a reputation for high-quality service, and for highspeed response to every request. As the British motor industry has contracted, Rimmer Bros. has grown larger, to ensure that many well-loved classic cars, now out of production and no longer supported by their original makers, can still be maintained, restored, and enjoyed. While the support for Triumph strongly continues, during the 1990s the coverage of Rover SD1 models was added, and in the 2000s Land Rover and Range Rover, to include models right up to date. From 2005, our support was extended to cover more modern MG-Rover cars. In 2012 our range was further extended to cover Jaguar models 1998 onwards. 2013 saw the completion of our new warehouse built to the rear of our existing building. It effectively doubles our storage capabilities allowing our bulk Land Rover and MG Rover stocks to be stored on one site. We have also introduced a production line conveyor system into the packing room to increase the speed of order processing and despatch. With the company now well-es-
tablished, the parts inventory at Bracebridge Heath continues to grow, the technical and service expertise continues to match it, and the company’s strategic aim is to improve on that, even further, as space, time, and new marketing opportunities allow. Whether you live in the UK, or anywhere in the world, we always aim to provide the same high levels of service, product quality and customer satisfaction. To do this we not only invest heavily in our stocks, technology, and service response, but we make sure that our staff know all about our products, and our capabilities. No matter who you are, we will always do our very best to satisfy your parts and accessory requirements. Wherever possible we supply stock which was originally manufactured for the appropriate Triumph, MG-Rover, Rover SD1 Jaguar, and Land Rover models, and try to top up this with supplies from original tooling, and original suppliers. In addition, and where it is appropriate, we also offer after-market and re-manufactured items.

And wouldn’t it be great if everything Land Rover related could be found in one publication, (aside from this publication) where you can browse all the potential parts and accessories one may need for their Land Rover? That definitely applies to the new Rimmer Bros catalogue. It’s their first dedicated Land Rover and Range Rover accessory catalogue, with 200 pages dedicated to all things Solihull.
Whether it’s genuine, OEM or aftermarket products you’re after – depending on whether your wallet will allow – there should be something here for you, whether you have an original Series I (unlikely) or the latest brand new Discovery (sadly also unlikely). K2 Design & Fabrication (Hall 1 F8) Whether your project is big or small, if it needs fabricating from metal you’ve come to right place. ?And when I say fabricating, it doesn’t need to be new project or item. A lot of the work we take on is the addition to a previous project or a repair to an older piece of machinery. Get in touch to discuss your requirements. ?We do produce and stock a number of parts that see regular demand, but this isn’t the core of our business, 95% of all the work we carry out is bespoke production. This involves taking your ideas, designing it with CAD and following consultation with you then producing the item. ?Beyond the physical manufacturing of items we can then coat and finish the parts in a number of mediums, from paint, to powder coating, galvanising to zintec plating, we have all bases covered. www.k2designandfabrication.co.uk

GREAT BRITISH LAND ROVER SHOW A Tale of the Shire
B
ased in Mansfield, Shire Fabrications make tough stuff for tough Land Rovers. This isn’t the place for a calfskin-bound drinks holder. But it is the place for well-fabricated bits of metal to protect your Landy. First and foremost, there’s no point in adding bits to your vehicle if it’s going to get nicked, as so many Defenders do. So the very simple, very strong and very effective Safe T Pedal is worth a look. It’s a fabricated steel sheet with a strong lock. The whole thing goes over your pedals and locks into place. There’s no way you can get it off and it’s a highly visible bright-yellow deterrent. It weighs up to 6kg and can easily be locked and unlocked with the key and takes just moments to put on or take off. Now that your vehicle is considerably safer, it’s worth looking at all the other things they do, most of which assume you’re going to be going heavily off-road. Guards can protect your steering, diff and fuel tank, and there are cages to protect the rest. Add in heavy-duty (of course) rock and tree sliders, winch bumpers and much more for your Land Rover and you’re going to be more secure than Kim Kardashian.

Down in the Valleys
I
f there is one place you’ll visit and quickly develop withdrawal symptoms from on departure, it’s Llanerchindda Farm. This serene bed and breakfast, perched upon the Car-marthenshire hillside, first entered Land Rover owners’ consciousness under the stewardship of Nick Bointon, as an ideal resting spot just outside Llandovery for green lane adventures. Since those days, the new management partnership of Martin and Lynne Hadley, plus sons Mark and Andrew, has only facilitated the farm’s rise in popularity. The Hadley’s previous experience came at a successful hotel in the Lake District, before acquiring the farm
some ten years ago now. For a real taste of the Llanerchindda hospitality, you’ll need to do just that… taste! Should you arrive there just approaching lunchtime, you’ll be subject to Lynne and Mark’s culinary expertise. The other half of the team are Martin and Andrew, who together oversee the front of house and as with all of the Hadleys, they are more than happy to assist your stay in whichever way possible. Annotated maps, portable sat-navs or even a local to guide you on your way, are readily available throughout your visit. You aren’t taking advice from any old family either, they’re well educated on the do’s and don’ts of green laning in the area thanks to their involvement
with GLASS and Treadlightly. With more than enough local lanes in the surrounding area to keep you coming back again, it’s good to know Llanerchindda have plenty of accommodation options for when you finally have to stop for the day. One of the favoured choices should be the on-site cottage which is the place to be for anyone planning a group green laning holiday to the area. The copious amount of green lanes around the farm is what makes Llanerchindda so unique. Your first visit will more than likely see you sample the traditional lanes of Soar y Mynydd and Strata Florida in order to get to grips with the Welsh landscape. However, on a second visit you can dabble in the dozens of less-trodden trails that still come with stunning sights of the countryside. Ultimately, this is what everyone is looking for from their green laning adventures – a unique experience that you’ll remember for a long, long time. And, as you’ll hopefully find out, there’s no better place to crown this memory than at Llanerchindda Farm.

Defenders are being stolen left, right and centre – but there is a way you can stop your Land Rover falling into the wrong hands

How to Defender Defender

he theft of your Defender is something that keeps you and every other Defender owner up at night. The fact is they are one of the most commonly stolen vehicles in the UK, and while we love their simplicity when it comes to enjoying them as a hobby, it doesn’t bode well when it comes to protecting them from criminals. Sure, when you hear the old adage of Land Rovers being a Meccano set it can be an endearing one, but when you look back on a reel of CCTV footage and watch a cretin dismantle your beloved truck in a matter of minutes, it’s hard not to believe that it can be a double-edged sword.
Products
There are numerous deterrents to be found on the market, helping you to stop short of sleeping in your Defender with one eye open. But one suspects few work as well as a tracker – and in particular, the Defender Defender tracker. You can opt for a couple of different trackers from Defender Defender, the first being the Defender Tracker, an entry-level device that costs £75 and allows owners to log into an app on their smartphone and pinpoint the exact location of their Defender at that given moment. This is a budget option, but the one we have fitted as an example here is the range-topping Defender Defender
device. It will set you back just £195, and comes with numerous additional features over the basic device mentioned earlier. For starters, the device uses both GPS technology and motion sensors to keep tabs on your Land Rover, alerting you via text and smartphone notifications if your Defender has either been moved, felt any vibrations or had the battery disconnected or ignition started without the proper key. It’s a clever tracker and I can confirm having used this 90 at various photographing locations over the last few months that the device is fully aware of when we’ve taken the vehicle from location to location. Thieves beware. It’s a good precaution to have on your Defender, and one that police actively encourage Land Rover owners to install. When it comes to installing a Defender Defender device, the fitting process is relatively quick and they will provide you with all the instructions you need. We spoke with Brad, one of Defender Defender’s trained technicians, who fit

our device, and he gave us a tip to help make the process as easy as possible. ‘First things first: you prepare the wiring loom for fitting,’ says Brad. ‘If you get all the prep out of the way first, then it’s just a case of plugging everything in afterwards.’ If you sort your crimping and stripping of the wires first, you’ll be on the right track to a tracked Landy. It’s a shame that we should have to go to such measures to protect the machines we hold in such high regard, with the theft of a Defender likely to have affected either you or someone you know. But with companies like Defender Defender taking the fight to the criminals who decide to commit such deeds, there will at least be more Defenders returning home to their proper owners and there will be fewer Green Oval keepers losing sleep at night.
Above: Crossed wires is never good, but especially when it comes to your Defender’s safety. Follow the instructions provided and endeavour to sort all of the preparation beforehand – it’ll make things so much easier. Trust us
The Defender Defender is an all-inclusive security system delivering automated responsive alert notifications, unparalleled service levels and the best customer controls on the market. Overland Prep: The Knowledge
Words: Marilu Peries Pictures: Noel and Marilu Peries
Embarking on an overland adventure is no small undertaking, regardless of where your eventual destination may lie. But fortunately, for two people and their Land Rover who live on the road, they can get you starting out on the right track
D
eciding to take a year off to travel through 20-plus African countries requires considerable preparation to ensure a smooth journey and to avoid situations that could derail our plans, temporarily or entirely. For those readers who may be thinking, ‘How on Earth can you travel through so many countries?’ or ‘You must be completely nuts’, here are
some tips for preparing for a successful overland journey in any part of the world, whether you’re travelling through two countries or 20!
Find a vehicle that will get you there – eventually I’m not a car expert. And let’s face it, I married a Land Rover enthusiast. We concede that Land Rovers aren’t
well known for their reliability. And Maggie has certainly been known to break down. But what she lacks in mechanical soundness, she makes up for in character and a sense of adventure (okay, so it’s not always easy to remember that when stuck at the roadside for the 15th time in three days). Surely, there’s nothing more satisfying than cruising into a new town in Africa’s most iconic
overland vehicle. And the more time you spend broken down the more time you have to enjoy a place, right? Every cloud etc. Maggie is a Land Rover Defender 200Tdi. And being a 1991 model means that she’s part of the old generation of Land Rovers that can quite literally be fixed anywhere, often with duct tape and some chewing gum. Most of her parts are so simple that
we’ve had mechanics DIY us new parts that are not available, blacksmith style, with a hammer and a torch. So Maggie fulfils the most important check box: she’ll get us there... eventually. With a lot of patience. And a lot of breakdown stories to talk about. However, there are plenty of other legitimate choices – the Land Rover Discovery, for instance. I forget the rest.

Be prepared, but don’t plan too much You got that right - throw caution to the wind and throw those dull and generic itineraries away! Embarking on a transcontinental journey is a gutsy decision. Embrace it. You’ll face situations you cannot possibly plan for, although with preparation you may be able to anticipate and handle them with flexibility. The most important thing, in our humble opinions, to thrive and survive on an overland journey, is to be prepared and well-informed, but to leave plenty of time for getting distracted and delayed by the unknown.
(And for breaking down if you’re in a Land Rover!) Don’t get us wrong, we’re not saying don’t do your research. There is never any harm in reading up on where you’re headed, but don’t plan or book anything too far in advance. In other words, make sure you cover the important stuff, like the criteria for getting you and the vehicle across the border, but be aware that things could change at a moment’s notice. Not everyone goes by the book. In our experience you’ll learn a lot from talking to locals about where and how to get to places, more so than a million guide books or blogs could ever tell you.
Maybe you thought you would never want to set foot in Zimbabwe, but you actually found that it has some of the friendliest people you’ve ever met. Perhaps Yosemite National Park which you think will be fantastic will turn out to be a huge bore. Or maybe that seaside village that Lonely Planet says nothing about is where you will have a mind-blowing, horizon-expanding, can’t-wait-to-write-homeabout-this experience. But you may never be able to enjoy all the surprises that will make the journey truly incredible if you set your itinerary too rigidly. Continued over on Page 44

The Overland Bazaar
Words: Graham Scott
QUQUQ Hmmm, that’s not a simple name to write, easy to start, hard to know when to stop. But the idea behind it is simple enough. You haul a box out of storage, shove it in the back of your 4x4 and you’re set. Because you’ve just put in a bed, a kitchen and storage space all in one go. The – here we go – QUQUQ module is available from 4x4 Overlander and has everything cleverly packed away so you can open it up, and there in front of you is your kitchen with cupboards, complete with a two-burner stove, 20 litres of water, a sink, worktop and stowage. The ability to create coq au vin is down to you. Then, when you’re tired at the end of the day, you pull a handle and the bed pops out on the top, complete with foam mattress. The beauty is that you don’t need to do much, so
you don’t need to attach the system to the vehicle other than load it in, and you don’t need to do much to get your bed up and good to go. If you rather like your Land Rover and want to use it for adventures, but you don’t want to go down the whole kitting out for Africa thing, or you don’t want to be seen in a mobile home, then this could be the answer. The system is robust and light, with waterproof wood, aluminium and stainless much in evidence, so you don’t need a team of brawny blokes to get you on your way. QUQUQ is made in Germany, so the quality looks first-rate, and you certainly get a lot of kit as standard. The company knows that their system fits lots of vans, like a Renault Trafic or the VWs, and the D-Box system fits a Land Rover 110 neatly,
so check out PDQ what would fit your Land Rover: www.4x4overlander.com
Not Surviving,Thriving Ray Mears is prone to getting a touch tetchy if you ask him how he survives in the wilderness. In response, he says: ‘I don’t survive there – I live there.’ And more and more people are taking to the wilderness and the backwoods and wanting to do more than just chew on some larvae while straining water through their sock. While Ray Mears would never countenance taking kit like this, for those who fancy living outside and who can get there in their Land Rover, then why not add a bit of proper kitchen technology and luxury? Mountain Safety Research sounds like the right sort of name for a company making foodware for outdoor adventures. The US company can kit you out for a proper slap-up meal. The aluminium pot set that has a lid with a built-in strainer; a Ceramic Flex Skillet that you can use for stir-fry or even pizza (and which nests with the pots for compact packing); a 2-litre Titan Kettle in lightweight titanium for the essential brew – it’s all here.
There are even flatpack Long Tool Spoon and Fork which have cutouts at one end for adjusting a stove, while the extra length of the spoon makes getting into hot pots easy – and of course perfect for supping with the Devil.
So if you fancy knocking up some squirrel stir-fry followed by flapjacks, then this is the kit you’ll need as you head out the door. Check out how MSR can make you a better cook by going to www.msrgear.com, but don’t mention it to Ray Mears.
Cosmic Sleeping Look, I’m not sure we should be mentioning this stuff. The publicity talks about this delivering a ‘cosmic sleep experience’, which all sounds a bit damn hippy to me ’n’ the boys. And, while I’m looking for the pump-action, what kind of fool wants to buy a sleeping bag that ‘takes you comfortably below freezing temperatures’. Huh? Sounds like one of them cooler bags we keep in the freezer for the beers, not something I want to snuggle down in after drinking them beers. And what’s this, apparently the bag has ‘nailed the tricky trifecta’. They shouldn’t be using language like that around the ladies. Hah, then they try and say that the trifecta they’re talking about is weight, price and warmth but we know better. And then we’re into registered marks and trademarks and who knows what else. This Questar HD sleeping bag has ThermaCapture and zoned insulation which sounds okay I guess, but it’s filled with Nikwax Hydrophobic Down and I’m not sure I want a sleeping bag that’s scared of water, poor lil’ thing. Still put all that fancy-pants stuff together and you get a three-season sleeping bag made by Therm-a-Rest
which will allow you to sleep in the great outdoors even if the temperature is below zero. You can also buy it in three sizes so if you’re, kind of, large, then you can find a bag your size which is smart of them. And Therm-a-Rest, say that sounds kind of American. A Seattle company? That so. Well, it sounds mighty fine, and worth every dime of the £210 price.

Take essentials, and leave the kitchen sink at home Contrary to what your mother might think, you are not being airdropped into a war zone, or the middle of the Sahara Desert. In all likelihood, you will be able to find everything you need, and more, in major towns and cities along the way. One of Noel’s biggest regrets on his first journey was taking way too much stuff with him. Noel’s original kit list included: no less than five 20-litre water canisters,
for a maximum capacity of 100 litres; two suitcases full of clothes, woolly hats and winter jackets; 20 pairs of sunglasses, a 20lb beast of a first aid kit and a portable shower. All of which he eventually gave away to people he met along the way. If you’ve got too many items in the vehicle, you’ll find it a hassle trying to get to everything, to keep it clean and organised. And the other downside of additional weight is it will slow you down and burn more fuel. Our advice: keep it minimal, keep it practical.
Get a bank account that doesn’t charge to withdraw money Unless you plan on carrying trillions of Columbian pesos in suitcases, you are going to need to withdraw money at some point. OK, probably many, many times. And most banks charge a flat fee plus a percentage of the cash withdrawn, which can add up to thousands of wasted Kenyan shillings. Having a bank account, travel money card and/or credit card that lets you withdraw money without fees, or with reduced fees, is worth the investment. Left: Noel’s medication taken for yellow fever in Ghana
Right: Maggie and other overland vehicles crossing from Mauritania into Senegal
Do such accounts exist? Indeed, they do. In the UK, I recently opted for the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society Gold Classic account, with no foreign withdrawal or transaction fees, and the Halifax Clarity Card, also with no fees (but interest charged for withdrawing cash, at the time of writing). There are also plenty of options for my fellow Americans. Noel also advises bringing some modest cash reserves or emergency traveller’s cheques - both US dollars and another major currency, such as Sterling or Euros, as some countries
have preferential exchange rates for one currency over another. You may not always be close to a working ATM.
Find a good long-stay travel insurance policy I’m a worrier, and the kinds of travel mishaps that good travel insurance policies cover are exactly what keep me up at night. What if we have an accident? What if the doctor runs out of anti-venom? What if we get stranded while hiking Kilimanjaro? What if we get mauled
45 Above: Maggie heading to the Elephant Coast, South Africa Above Right: Some of the contents from Noel’s first overland journey by hyenas? What if the airline loses our bags? Although not as popular as ‘ordinary’ travel insurance policies, many companies offer ‘long stay’ or ‘backpacking’ policies that are specially designed for overlanding-type adventures. Our advice: don’t just go for the cheapest you can find. Find a policy with a reputable company with a strong customer service and track record. Good insurance is an investment, and you’ll thank yourself a million times if you ever need to use it.
You can take precautions not to get ill, but it could still happen Noel has now completed two overland journeys and has unfortunately added typhoid and malaria to his ever-expanding list of contracted tropical
diseases. In both situations, he had tried to take precautions as much as possible but when he got ill the most important thing was getting him to a doctor as soon as possible. In most major cities in Africa you will be able to get access to private hospitals and be looked after (at a cost). Once bed ridden, the key was to rest as much as possible with the correct medication and only consider moving on after a full recovery.
Check into border crossing requirements Although applying for visas in advance is often optional, it’s good to have an idea of the countries that might present difficulties in the visa department. Of course, with some passports, visas may be 100% straightforward.
However, even with the best of passports, there is likely to be at least one immigration officer along the way who tells you that you must go back to the London embassy to apply for a visa before you can enter his country. Border crossing for your vehicle may present similar challenges - the solution for many African countries is the carnet de passage. Like a car passport, a carnet is required for foreign vehicles in a handful of African countries, but also Australia and parts of Asia. While preparing for something like an overland trip takes time and patience, the effort you put into making sure you have everything from the getgo means it could prevent you from meeting a nightmare along the way. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. For more of Noel and Marilu’s adventures, visit www.maggieinafrica.com

Ruby’s Off Again: Episode Eleven
South America is firmly in the rear-view mirror, while Blighty lies straight ahead. It’s just a quick pit stop, however, before Ruby The Landy and her mates set about conquering North America Pictures: Jenny Bright & Gavin Lowrie
F
rom Santiago in Chile, via Mexico City, Jenny Bright and Gavin Lowrie flew back to the UK, signing off their South American leg in the process. Their mobile home, overland transport and companion, Ruby The Landy, was drifting her way to Vancouver where her owners would meet her in due course. With Ruby taking the slow boat to Canada, Jen and Gav popped home to catch up with family, friends, and of course some creature comforts. Like Wetherspoons and curry. Before long, Jen and Gav were in the air again and no sooner had they waved goodbye to their families, than they were touching down in Vancouver. Vancouver’s early impression turned out to be rather sobering. ‘We caught the SkyTrain into the city centre and a taxi to our hotel. Our
budget hotel,’ says Gav. ‘Whilst the hotel itself was perfectly adequate, we had not realised that it was in one of the dodgiest areas in Vancouver, East Hastings Street. We soon realised this when we took a walk. It was incredibly sad to see so many people clustered in a few streets who clearly had a huge range of problems, including homelessness, significant alcohol and drugs use and mental health issues.’ Jen continues, ‘Neither of us had ever witnessed such a sad sight in such volume before. People who were clearly in a desperate state, moving around as though they were zombies due to the nature of the drugs they were taking. This impacted on us so much we read up about the area online.’ While Vancouver clearly has some issues to address, the city certainly can point to some less distressing images. Jen and Gav checked out Gastown and Canada Place before boarding on their ferry to Vancouver Island – their
Left: One of the most delightful sights you’ll see today Below: Cathedral Grove, where the trees scare even the lumberjacks
47 Above: Totem poles seem to be very popular in these parts home for the next few weeks. They had enjoyed the wine so much in Mendoza that Jen and Gav had arranged to do a voluntary placement for five weeks at a vineyard in Cowichan Valley. Mark and Linda, the owners of Rocky Creek, had started making wine in the basement of their last house before moving to their current set-up. ‘Everything is grown on the island, they have four vineyards and the grapes are handpicked, processed and hand-bottled on site,’ Jen reveals. ‘They have won more awards than any other vineyard on the island and we are very proud to have worked for them.’ Work consisted of gardening, bottling the wine, working with the grapes (or shooting) as well as preparing the tasting room and helping on the stall at the market. It was never going to be all work and no play, though. With two days off each week, Jen and Gav made the most of their spare time. They visited Victoria, the island’s capital, and enjoyed exploring its coast, including Cattle Point and the quaint floating houses and restaurants at Fisherman’s Wharf. There was time to see Beacon Hill Park, which hugs the coastline and has the world’s tallest totem pole; the imposing British Colombia Parliament buildings and the fantastic Royal BC Museum that provided an interesting and informative insight into the First Nations people, the natural world and the history of British Columbia. Viewing wildlife was clearly still on the agenda, as it had been in South America, with orcas spotted out in Cowichan Bay while bald eagles glided overhead. The Cathedral Grove forest is worth a visit, too, but also the rugged Pacific Rim National Park, home to huge beaches lined with dense rainforests. So where, you might ask, is Ruby in all of this? Well, having left Chile on 12 May, she got a little held up in
48
Above: Welcome to Tofino, part of the Pacific Rim National Park – you’ll find plenty of driftwood here Panama and was due to arrive later on 23 May. In the meantime, Jen and Gav finished up at Rocky Creek and headed back to Vancouver to await HRH Ruby The Landy. There was time to enjoy the city, and hiring pedal bikes to get around a city’s landmarks is a great way of fitting more into your day. But now attention turns to Ruby, who was picked up on the morning of Jen’s birthday. ‘She started first time and clearly could not wait to get going again!’ says a proud and jubilant Jen. Celebrations continued with Canada Day on 1 July, on this occasion marking 150 years of
independence from Britain. Jen and Gav were in the midst of the festivities at Canada Place – quite literally the place to be. ‘Whilst we were in Vancouver, we had another change of plan!’ says Jen. ‘We decided that we didn’t want to clock up almost 7,000 miles travelling to the tip of Alaska and back, so we booked another cruise. It would take us over 14 nights, up the inside passage of Alaska and back, departing from Seattle.’ Departing date decided, our trio headed into the neighbouring state of Alberta, sampling the beautiful Rocky
Mountains and the national parks of Banff and Jasper. Jen was certainly prepared for the outdoors, equipped with bells and an air horn to deter any bears or wolves that may be stupid enough to tackle said damsel. ‘We visited the glorious Lake Louise, which is a turquoise glacier lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains, and we drove down the Bow Valley Parkway also blessed with stunning visuals,’ says Gav. ‘There were many places to stop along the way, like Johnston Canyon. In Jasper National Park, Jen and Gav found their favourite campsite to date called Waterfowl Lakes. They drove down the Icefields Parkway, walked to the foot of the Columbia glacier, and Jen even immersed herself on a bear walk with park rangers, educating people on these magnificent creatures. ‘We had heard that there were numerous wildfires in British Columbia and that it had been declared a state of emergency. We decided we needed to head back and made for Vancouver prior to crossing the border into USA at the Peace Arch,’ explains Gav. ‘We spent a couple of days just outside
of Seattle, getting our stuff together for our Alaskan cruise and trying to explain to Ruby why we were leaving her again!’ Jen adds, ‘We have only scraped the surface of Canada and absolutely love it. The scenery, the people and the lifestyle have been incredible and we want to return one day and see a lot more.’ There is often a lot more depth to these destinations than you first realise. For Jen, Gav and eventually Ruby, they will be hoping the same can be said for the United States of America. Read more of Ruby, Jen and Gav’s world tour at www.rubythelandy.com

One Defender with all the Trimmings: Part Three Ruskin Design has taken one dated Land Rover interior and converted it into a fresher, more luxurious and more practical cabin. And now, after the final touches have been made, this is the result of their craft
F
ew can deny that Land Rover interiors of old are dull and featureless places to spend your days. Of course, they were kept that way to help fulfil a purpose, working away on farms, construction sites and locations few may ever reach. Today, with older Land Rovers like the Defender (how ridiculous does that sound) starting to be something to preserve rather than punish, interiors are falling under the magnifying glass and owners are realising they’d like somewhere less spartan to enjoy the thrills of piloting a Land Rover. Over the last couple of months, we’ve followed the re-trim of one of our own Defenders: a Td5 90 that didn’t have anything fundamentally wrong with its cabin, but thanks to the incredible design team and skilled technicians at Ruskin, it has been allowed to become so much more.
Words and Pictures: Mike Trott Now, as you’ll see over the next few pages, the re-trim has been completed, while a few other items have been fitted to help polish off what is now a very different place to sit from a few months ago. We will be speaking to Colin, who owns the vehicle, to find out what the Land Rover has been like to live with since it adopted a Ruskin Inside. But firstly, we’ve talked to Ruskin’s chief designer, Paul, about the complexities of this makeover compared to those that have gone before – if there were any… I ask Paul if there was an element of this re-trim that proposed a particular challenge, or one part of the vehicle that gave him more to scratch his head about than another. His answer was to the point. No,’ says Paul frankly, ‘Because it’s what we do. If there was a challenge, I’d say it was having to restrain from going over the top, from a design point

Below: Changing the locks is a fiddly job, requiring the removal of the door cards and detaching and reattaching the mechanism of view. There’s no question it’s easier to let rip and create something that is loud and flamboyant – it can be a lot more difficult to keep things subtle.’ Throw in the fact that Ruskin had the task of adhering to the age of the vehicle, and with each project they also consider the lifestyle of the customer, you can then see why their re-trims really are a tailored fit – everything is bespoke. Paul adds, ‘In my opinion, the whole project is enjoyable, but the best part of any project is exceeding the customer’s expectations. ‘There was one aspect new for us this time around, that being the conversion of the front seats, which is something we hadn’t done before. Taking the original seats and manipulating them into a more comfortable and more stylish alternative has worked well.’ This will henceforth be another string on the ever-expanding Ruskin bow, and a service the company will now offer to prospective clients. Colin is now a past client, which means we can get his view on what it’s like to live with a Ruskin interior. Let’s be straight: he’s been suitably impressed, but there has even been a couple of surprises.
Astwood 4x4 Ltd LAND ROVER SPECIALISTS
‘If there is one thing that has struck me, it’s how surprisingly durable the interior is,’ says Colin. ‘I was nervous about the leather, using it day to day, clambering in and out of the cabin and how it might wear, but the leather protection Ruskin offer is amazing stuff. I’ve been impressed with how easy it is to keep clean and tidy.’ Not only that, but a Ruskin Defender is proving to be a more versatile Defender. There are little design touches that are executed so well, they could be mistaken for factory-fitted accessories. The cubby box, for instance,
has improved cup holders, but also an additional two on the rear, giving passengers in the back something to wet their appetite with. The revamped seats now have heating elements installed, a feature Colin is finding ever more useful as the days get shorter. And with the quality of the materials being introduced to the interior, namely the leather and alcantara, this is now an interior with added refinement and quieter manners. It all bodes well for those longer trips away. This is still a Defender, so it won’t be riding like a new Range Rover at any

point. However, in terms of comfort when looking at the seats alone, Colin says, ‘There is no comparison over the original. They hold you better and provide more support; the whole vehicle isn’t just a visual enhancement, it really works, with the beauty more than just skin-deep.’ Some of the visual effects are down to a smattering of other products, aimed at putting the final polish on your Land Rover. These include the
aluminium gear knobs, door locks and interior door handles provided by Croytec, along with their elegant clock surrounds that turn out to be a complete doddle to install. We have been sent a smaller yet sportier steering wheel supplied by the good people at Momo to throw into the cabin as well, which Colin reports has made the vehicle develop a more positive steering feel, while the Croytec surrounds prove simple is

often the most effective way when it comes to modifications. ‘The clock surrounds don’t look like an add-on,’ says Colin in disbelief, ‘Croytec have made something dull stand out.’ It’s a vehicle that already had plenty of admirers, but now even more onlookers are being charmed by the Ruskin Inside. With Ruskin, they certainly don’t do a job by halves, for example, even taking the time to re-trim the interior handle on the back door. They realise that an interior is a massive part of the automotive experience, but they are so confident with the work they do, they will issue a 100% guarantee on their interiors for the lifetime of the vehicle under your ownership. ‘I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend their skills and services to others,’ adds Colin. ‘People have already been popping their heads into the office having seen the Defender in the car park, enquiring about where they can get a similarly impressive cabin!’ Perhaps what is most impressive about the work Ruskin do is that they are able to take a working vehicle into another spectrum entirely. If you’re in the market for some new seats, a rejuvenated cabin or a re-trim of any description, well one word is all you need to remember: Ruskin.

here is no denying that Land Rover has had some questionable moments when you consider the engines they have produced over the years. From the highs of the Tdi power plants to the dreadful 2.0-litre diesel that appeared in the Series II, it’s clear that you can’t win them all. On this occasion, we’re assessing the pros and cons of the 2.5-litre naturally aspirated diesel that filled the engine bays of the Ninetys and One Tens in the mid-Eighties. Andy Walker of Alex Engineering has had various encounters with this engine – so, any positives? ‘Well I can’t really say too many good things about the 2.5 diesel engine, other than it was a better engine than the 2.5-litre turbodiesel version that followed,’ admits Andy. ‘It was an improvement on the 2.25-litre engine in some ways – the
* Based on 30-year-old driver, average area, 5+ years NCB, second vehicle, 2000 miles a year, with green lane and off-road cover, no claims or convictions and £100 excess
unit it replaced after Land Rover called time upon its 26 years of service, but the 2.5 could suffer from the burning up of piston rings either due to the lack of oil changes or the rings not bedding in from new.’ So far, so terrible. But there must have been some use for the 2.5 NA, not least because the military used the engine into the mid-Nineties, opting for it over the 200Tdi. On a side note, Matt Allen, Pricing Manager for Adrian Flux, says, ‘The NA 90s are one of the most competitively priced vehicles for youngsters to get into for insurance, if they aren’t wanting to go down the modern car telematics/black box route. Expect prices to start from around £15/1600 for year one motoring.’ A word of warning, however – 12-seater versions can throw up some issues with certain insurers, so Matt advises checking with a specialist in-
surer before taking the plunge on your first policy. Back to Andy, again, and it’s still not looking any better. ‘The 2.5 NA could also have a problem where the pre-combustion chamber inserts could come loose in the head. And the heads were prone to cracking too... And by modern diesel standards the 2.5 was lacking in power…’ Andy continues. There is some reason to invest, though. On the old 2.25 engine, it used a ‘dreadful’ intake flap system to create a vacuum for the brake servo, while on the 2.5 there was an actual vacuum pump. That’s something at least. Andy goes on, ‘They were the first engine made by Land Rover to have a cambelt. These didn’t give too much trouble, but changing them sometimes became an issue when bolts had rusted into the front of the engine.’ Other than that, Andy claims the 2.5
NA had a knack of wearing itself out in a frighteningly short amount of time. Thankfully, it wasn’t long before the 2.5

Series I (1948-1958)
I
f you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go. The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike. Its 1940’s engineering gives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once
were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then a finished example will fetch mega bucks. Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished examples now retailing where they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game. The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets. But can you really put a price on such an icon?
Series II/IIA (1958-1971)
I
n 1958, the second-generation Land Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders. Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts. The prices are on the increase, however, as these 50-year-old vehicles start to come into their own as a collector’s
item. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2.0-litre diesel, were underpowered and noisy. The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of refinement over the Series I. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks.
Series III (1971-1985)
F
ollowing on from the Series IIA, the Series III emerged in 1971 with a few cosmetic tweaks to freshen up the model. Headlights were shifted out to the wings in-line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top of the bulkhead – not sure it’s a five stars on the Euro NCAP scale, though. The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar
to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout its production, although in 1980 the 2.25 motors switched to a more durable five bearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with. They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.
Lightweight (1968-1984)
P
ossibly the ugly duckling of the Series Land Rover family – but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t find much love for the Series Lightweights. These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance that does divide opinion on occasion. To mimic the civvy Series ma-
chines, the SIII LWT – built from 1972 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings. These Series Lightweights throw up an extra dimension to Land Rover ownership, with military history and touches often machine-gunning the vehicle. It means you get a Land Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd.
Forward Controls (1962-1978)
O
nly serious enthusiasts need continue reading here. Ownership of any Forward Control is not for the faint-hearted. These leviathans are expensive to run and trying to get hold of some of the parts can be, quite frankly, a bit of a nightmare! Clubs can help here, though, as is often the case with any Land Rover. These vehicles offer substantial
payloads if that’s the sort of thing you’re after, but will also tick the boxes for huge, unnecessary and hilariously addictive fun. If you’re going to go the whole hog then why not buy a 101FC. You’ll have a V8 engine harping away underneath you (literally) and people are likely to clear out of your way when they see you coming in their mirrors. Surely that’s reason enough to buy one?

Ninety/One Ten (1983-1990)
T
he icon of the 4x4 world. This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you just about anywhere in the world. Early examples of the Ninety and One Ten are worth keeping hold of, providing they’re in good condition – but you’ll be searching far and wide for examples that are. This was the birth of the Defender, despite not being christened officially
until 1990, and as such these Land Rovers had coil-sprung suspension, new engines – although they were still terribly underwhelming – and offroad capability that has still yet to be matched today. A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5TD version with low miles and good history. They’re robust and as simple as they come.
Defender 200Tdi (1990-1994)
I
n 1990, the Defender name emerged and with it a cementing of a legacy that already stretched back over 40 years. This was... is the best 4x4 by far. It carried the Tdi badge for the first time and meant that no longer was a Defender being powered by a feeble hamster in a wheel. If you’re in the market for a 200 Defender, though, you might get a 200 unit but it might not necessarily
be from a Defender. Replacing blown units with a Disco 200Tdi is popular, so check the arrangement of the turbo and manifold. The 200Tdi is probably the best for off-roaders, so many of these vehicles will have been worked hard. Some owners have now started restoring these vehicles, meaning a premium price – but can you really put a price on perfection...?
Defender 300Tdi (1994-1998)
A
fter the 200 followed the 300Tdi. Essentially, this was a revised version of the predecessor – perhaps a little more refined – but still with the same durability. These engines, providing they are properly maintained, can last for decades. Look around for one with full service history and you could find yourself a keeper. Some Tdi Defenders have received
galvanised chassis and even bulkheads, and these are the type of Defender you should be after. A futureproof Landy. By the time the 300Tdi came out, Land Rover was now giving the Defender power steering as standard and disc brakes all-round. It’s the little things after all. Arguably the company’s greatest engine, balancing performance and practicality. The Defender in its prime.
Defender Td5 (1998-2007)
F
ollowing on from the Tdi era, Land Rover issued the Defender with its Td5 engine from 1998 to 2007. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure that any mods have been done properly. Remaps, EGR valve deletes and uprated intercoolers are a few examples
of what many have been subject to. Lots of power doesn’t always mean happy faces. The rear of the chassis has frequently been called into question, so protect the rear crossmember if it’s in good shape, or else face the consequences. With minimal electrics, the Td5 Defender is still a DIY machine and you’ll be working on one of Land Rover’s most notable masterpieces.
Defender TDCi (2007-2016)
T
he last of the Defenders were fitted with Ford Transit engines – first the 2.4 TDCi, followed by the 2.2 TDCi, brought in to meet Euro V emission standards and keep the Defender alive for another few years. Sadly, these engines denoted the Defender’s swansong, the twilight of its days. They were fitted with six-speed gearboxes, still had phenomenal offroad capability and even made the
Defender a nice place to be. But they were still very much Defenders. The era of blinging also began and you can find special editions out there costing obscene amounts of money. You will pay a premium for these Defenders, especially since the end of production. But if you can grab a 2.2 TDCi and start preserving it now, you may well never see depreciation. We’re no financial advisors, though...
£2000-£15000 Versions: Ninety (‘84-’90), One Ten, 127 (‘83-’90). 2.25 4cyl petrol (‘83-’85), 3.5 V8 (‘83-’90), 2.5NA 4cyl diesel (‘84-’90), 2.5 4cyl petrol (‘85-’90), 2.5TD (‘86-’90). Pros: Good ones are now worth saving, same ability as Tdi Defenders Cons: Not many left in good condition, engines underpowered
£3200-£25000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (19901994). 200Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel.
Pros: Legendary off-road, one of the very best engines, old-school electrics Cons: Genuine Defender 200Tdi units are getting rare, many have been used hard, corrosion
£3500-£20000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (19941998). 300Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel.
Pros: A slightly more refined Tdi powerplant, the best? Cons: Erm... erm... hmm, this is hard
£4000-£20000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (19982007). Td5 2.5 5cyl turbo-diesel.
Pros: Off-road capability, power, reliability (generally) Cons: Rear chassis, premium prices at the moment
£10000-£35000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (20072016). 2.4 TDCi (‘07-’12), 2.2 TDCi (‘12-’16).
Pros: Better emissions (marginally), more creature comforts, same offroad prowess Cons: Price, more electrics, last of the breed

Freelander 1 (1997-2006)
W
e haven’t always held the Freelander 1 in the highest regard here at The Landy, but as market prices constantly change, so too can our opinion on certain vehicles. With examples attainable from as little as £500, the Freelander 1 represents a cheap gateway into Landy ownership. There are a few issues to be aware of, though, such as the viscous coupling, which is expensive to replace and can
be upset by simply having mismatched tyres on your axles. The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures, but today’s replacements are much more robust. The V6 is thirsty and the 2.0Di is gutless, so opt for a TD4 – but check the condition of the injectors first. Buy an FL1 and you even get a Landy that’s decent off-road and doesn’t carry the usual trait of rusting after five minutes.
Freelander 2 (2006-2015)
M
ost people will turn their noses up at Freelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true Land Rovers. But while you should turn your nose up at the FL1, the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think. Because of it being replaced by the Discovery Sport, the FL2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels of refinement, a strong 2.2-litre
four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make for a great family vehicle. Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there. Prices are now falling thanks to the Freelander name disappearing from the production line, but for £10,000 you can now get a capable all-rounder that is actually pretty adept off-road and yet still economical to run.
59
£500-£3000 Versions: 1.8 4cyl petrol (‘97-’05), 2.0Di 4cyl diesel (‘97-’00), TD4 2.0 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘00-’06), 2.5i V6 petrol (‘00-’05). Pros: Cheap to buy, no major rust issues, surprisingly good off-road Cons: There are better Land Rovers out there, FL2 showed the FL1 how it should have been done
£3700-£20000 Versions: 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel, available in two- or four-wheel drive, 3.2 V6 petrol (‘07-’09).
Pros: Better off-road than you may anticipate, reliability, refinement, economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing

Range Rover Classic (1970-1996)
T
he Range Rover Classic is one of those vehicles that you could theoretically still use everyday in the 21st Century. If you’re running a V8, however, that may not be such a wise idea. Classic Range Rovers still provide a relatively refined and great drive today, but they can be thirsty if you’re not in one of the various turbo-diesel examples. That said, if you own one and it’s
in good condition – look after it, as it will only appreciate. These vehicles are popular with collectors. Unfortunately, in terms of spare parts, many have succumb to corrosion or have been abused off-road to the point of no return. While an early ‘70s Classic may not be attainable for everyone, tidy examples of the late four-door versions can make for an equally tidy investment.
Range Rover P38A (1994-2002)
M
any people believe the P38A Range Rover to be a bit of a menace – and often it’s completely justified. Lights on the dashboard, air suspension failure, head gasket failure... the list can really continue. Still, it’s not all doom and gloom with the P38. In fact, if you find one in good working order, it’s sensational. Service history is a must, and if you’re going to own one then some
diagnostic equipment is going to be a better companion than a spanner. Avoid the diesel variant as the engine was adopted from a BMW saloon and isn’t up to the task of the extra weight a Range Rover carries. Go for a 4.6 HSE, it’s actually more economical than the 4.0 V8 and you’ll get all the toys (working or not). Or you could try and find an anniversary model or even a Holland & Holland...
Range Rover L322 (2002-2012)
C
ompared to the P38, the L322 Range Rover was a saint. Generally. Its electronic aids were far less temperamental and it delivered a new level of luxury to four-wheeled motoring. The Td6 receives mixed reviews: some say it’s underpowered while others say it’s the best of the bunch. Common sense would steer you towards a TDV8, either the 3.6 or 4.4, but these are the L322s holding out
for strong money. Notably, the petrol V8s are lingering with very appealing price tags, but don’t think running one would be cheap. As with many 21st Century Land Rovers, they have lost their accessability for the home mechanic. Drivetrain faults are becoming more frequent, so you need to look for that FSH. As a car, however, it’s probably all the car you’ll ever need.
Range Rover L405 (2012-present)
I
f you want the very best in automotive luxury, then look no further. The latest incarnation of Land Rover’s flagship Range Rover weighs a whopping 400kg less than its predecessor thanks to the use of an aluminium body, which helps on mpg – although owning one of these suggests that your cash flow isn’t particularly an issue. This is the last word in elegance and majestic motoring. All the engines
supply copious amounts of power to your right foot, while the L405 hasn’t lost any of its off-road pedigree... even if taking one off-road is like asking your alcoholic friend to a wine-testing session. They could comfortably partake, but probably shouldn’t. Prices are still only right for Premier League footballers and people with a link to the royal family. If you fit into that category, then we envy you.
RR Sport 1 (2005-2013)
M
uch of the Range Rover Sport was borrowed from the Disco 3, in fact it shared virtually identical underpinnings, whereas today’s RR Sport uses actual Range Rover foundations. Nevertheless, Land Rover put a Range Rover in a tracksuit and attempted to make a handler out of it. To some extent they succeeded, although it’s no sports car despite what it says on the back of the vehicle.
It can play the leisure vehicle very well, though, and will go off-road like the best of them. If you’re going to buy one, then you need to love it for itself, becausse a Discovery of the same era is more practical, while a full-fat Range Rover is always going to carry an extra layer of prestige. They’re still a good all-rounder, though, and now relatively affordable.
£1500-£50000+ Versions: Two-door (‘70-’85), four-door (‘81-’96), LSE (‘92-’96). 3.5 V8 petrol (‘70-’86), 3.5 EFI V8 petrol (‘86-’89), 3.9 EFi V8 (‘89-’96), 2.4 VM turbo-diesel (‘86-’92), 200Tdi (‘92-’94), 300Tdi (‘94-’96). Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust (again), availability of parts for early models, V8 thirst
£600-£11000 Versions: 4.0 V8 petrol, 4.6 V8 petrol, 2.5 6cyl turbo-diesel.
Pros: Luxury, price, a Land Rover that doesn’t rust. Could even P38 prices rise soon? Cons: Electrics. Nuff said
£4000-£40000 Versions: 3.0 Td6 (‘02-’06), 4.4 V8 petrol (‘02-’07), 3.6 TDV8 (‘06-’10), 4.4 TDV8 (‘10-’12), 4.2 supercharged V8 petrol (‘05-’09), 5.0 supercharged V8 petrol (‘09-’12).
Pros: Great off-road, luxury, image, TDV8 powerplants Cons: Your maintenance bill
£45000-£150000 Versions: 3.0 TDV6, 4.4 SDV8, 5.0 supercharged V8 petrol, 3.0 SDV6 hybrid (‘14-present).
Pros: Styling, engines, capability at pretty much everything Cons: Price
£7000-£40000 Versions: 2.7 TDV6 (‘05-’09), 3.0 TDV6 (‘09-’11), 3.0 SDV6 (‘11-’12), 4.4 V8 petrol (‘05-’07), 3.6 TDV8 (‘07’10), 4.2 supercharged V8 (‘05-’09), 5.0 supercharged V8 (‘09-’12). Pros: Decent performance from both engines and chassis, a lot of car for your money Cons: Not as practical as a Disco, not as prestigious as a proper Rangey

RR Sport 2 (2013-present)
T
he second-generation Range Rover Sport has also been on a diet to save over 400kg, just like the daddy Range Rover. That means that even this big bruiser is relatively economical when spec’d with the SDV6 motor. Some won’t like the vulgar and flamboyant posture, while others will adhere to the smart, yet mean styling. But no one can knock the Sport for its
performance. It feels incredibly light for such a big car, and if you’ve robbed a bank and can afford the SVR version, it’s as good round a race track as it is on a green lane. The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Removing limbs is possibly the most feasible option, or wait ten years and see if the prices have come tumbling down off those high pedestals.
RR Evoque (2011-present)
W
hen the Range Rover Evoque was launched, it signalled Jaguar Land Rover’s intent on hitting the mass market. And given that the Evoque is their fastest-selling vehicle to-date, they’ve clearly done the job. That doesn’t mean it’s a hit with purists. They don’t much like the fact Victoria Beckham was involved in the designing of it, nor that it is the polar opposite to a Defender.
It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac, but it would rather not go down that route. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and because there are so many out there, they have decent residuals. Go for a five-door with the new Ingenium engine, and make it the 4WD version. The 2WD model may be eco-friendly but what is a Range Rover without four-wheel drive?
61
£43000-£130000 Versions: 3.0 SDV6, 4.4 SDV8, 5.0 supercharged V8, 3.0 SDV6 Hybrid. Range Rover Sport SVR 5.0 supercharged V8 (‘15-present).
Pros: Feels light considering weight, engines, almost as luxurious as its bigger brother Cons: You’ll need deep pockets
£14000-£48000 Versions: 2.2 SD4 (‘11-’15), 2.0 Si4 4cyl petrol, 2.0 TD4 (‘15-present).
Pros: Economy, handling, beats rivals off-road Cons: Not as practical as the new Discovery Sport

Evoque Convertible (2016-present)
T
alk about niche markets: here’s a four-wheel-drive SUV that also doubles up as a convertible – go figure. It’s not going to appeal to a great number of people, and those who do like the cut of its jib will have to contend with a driving experience that is inferior to the regular Evoque, and the likelihood of a few more head scratches regarding practicality. The only real upside is that of the
electrically-foldable roof, which does at least improve the vehicle’s exterior when slid back out of sight. You’ll also be in relatively exclusive company when owning this car, and it’s only available in the higher trim levels of the Evoque stable. All that aside, you’ll have probably the most capable and versatile convertible the world has ever seen. This is not just a soft-top for the summer.
Range Rover Velar (2017-present)
A
nd so the Range Rover family welcomes its fourth model, confidently making it the most prominent of Land Rover’s sub brands. It’s a vehicle we will be giving our driven verdict on in the very near future, but for the meantime, we do know this much: the Velar is a fine-looking craft and is based upon the same architecture as the Jaguar F-Pace.
It has greater off-road ability than the aforementioned (good for Green Oval enthusiasts) and it is available with a wide choice of engines, most of which combine good economy with usable everyday performance. The interior is Land Rover’s most advanced cabin to date, with other models expected to follow the Velar in due course. Other than that, you do pay a premium for the suave looks...
Discovery 1 (1989-1998)
T
he earliest version of the Discovery was aimed purely at providing a middle ground between the agricultural Defender and the luxury, upper-class Range Rover. It carried much of the Defender’s capabilities, but added more refinement and a driving experience more suitable to families – but without a Range Rover price tag. Blessed with the same wonderful
Tdi engines, the Discovery saved Land Rover and hit back at offerings from other nations by being an affordable all-rounder. And that still holds true even today. Early Discovery 1s in fine condition are now classics and will continue to appreciate. We would recommend trying to find a tidy and later 300Tdi example, but watch out for body rust – the boot floor, arches and wings etc.
Discovery 2 (1998-2004)
F
ollowing on from the first-generation Discovery, in 1998 Land Rover gave its family SUV some minor cosmetic tweaks and a whole new power unit in the shape of the Td5. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure any mods have been done properly. You can also buy a V8, but
the fuel bill isn’t going to be welcome, plus they’re more temporamental. Unlike on the D1, its the chassis that’s the problem, not the body. We all know that Discos make for a great tow car, and consequently many of the rear chassis on D2s have dipped their rears into the sea. Not all of them live to tell the tale... Get a later example for more creature comforts and difflocks too.
Discovery 3/4 (2004-present)
T
he Discovery went through a dramatic revamp for its launch in 2004, but it came out the other side as one hell of a vehicle. Greatly improved in terms of power and refinement, the Disco 3 received the relatively economical 2.7 TDV6 engine (although the thirsty 4.4 V8 petrol was an option) and became the first Land Rover to be given Terrain Response. If you need one vehicle in
your life, this could be the one that ticks the most boxes at once. Be weary of maintenance costs, especially as you approach the 105,000mile/seven-year mark that means the timing belt is due – it’s a body-off job! The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines are even better, with monumental amounts of torque. Luxury has also increased significantly in later examples. A later SDV6 model is best.
£35000-£55000 Versions: TD4 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo-diesel (180hp), SD4 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo-diesel (240hp), Si4 2.0-litre 4cyl petrol (240hp). Pros: One of the very few ways you can get open-top thrills in a Land Rover Cons: Heavier, less practical, less economical and worse to drive than hard-top Evoque
£44000-£90000 Versions: D180 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo-diesel, D240 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo-diesel, D300 3.0-litre 6cyl turbo-diesel, P250 2.0-litre 4cyl petrol, P300 2.0-litre 4cyl petrol, P380 3.0-litre 6cyl petrol. Pros: Very stylish, interior, choice of engines, driven verdict soon... Cons: Could hurt the bigger Sport and L405. Prices stretch to near £100K
£500-£5000 Versions: 200Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘89-’94), 300Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘94-’98), 3.5 V8 (‘89-’93), 3.9 V8 (‘94-’98). Pros: Almost as every bit as good as the Defender off-road, price, practicality Cons: The body rusts like it’s been doused in sea water
£1000-£6000 Versions: Td5 2.5 5cyl turbo-diesel, 4.0 V8.
Pros: Td5 power and reliability, great all-rounder, better comfort than D1, diff locks standard for ‘03 onwards (model dependent) Cons: Rear chassis crumbles like its dessert namesake
£5800-£40000 Versions: 2.7 TDV6, 4.4 V8 (‘04’09), 3.0 TDV6 (‘09-’12), 3.0 SDV6 (‘12-present).
Pros: Off-road capability, usability for every occasion, luxury on later models, torque of 3.0-litre engines Cons: Maintenance costs, air compressor on D3s, D4s not so cheap

Discovery 5 (2017-present)
L
aunched just a couple of months ago, this latest Discovery is still yet to hit the UK roads on mass. Land Rover needed to improve economy in particular with this edition of the Disco, and having chopped 480kg from the kerbweight, it would seem their proficiency in the use of lightweight technologies is only getting better and better. We’ve yet to drive the latest Discov-
ery, but expectations are high – especially as this will be Land Rover’s most capable SUV in production. New engines look promising on paper, and Land Rover has listened to customers regarding the infotainment system. It will remain to be seen whether the changes have quenched the thirst of the critics, though. We reckon the base Sd4 model could turn out to provide all you really need.
£43500-£76000 Versions: 2.0 Sd4, 3.0 Td6, 3.0 Si6 (‘16-present).
Pros: Most technologically-advanced Land Rover to-date, keeps Discovery practicality Cons: Not many can afford one currently, easy to mistake for D Sport
Discovery Sport (2015-present)
B
rought in to replace the Freelander 2, the Discovery Sport was the vehicle that turned the Discovery brand into a family. It has come to be so much more than a re-badged Freelander, though. For starters, the Discovery Sport has seven seats (just), drives better than a Freelander 2 and is now more refined thanks to the Ingenium Td4 engine. Land Rover is now churning out
LAND ROVER T H E E V E RY D AY C L A S S I C
substantial units of the baby Disco, now even matching the Evoque for pace as one of the fastest-selling vehicles they make. It’s a more usable vehicle than the Evoque, though, and carries less of the feministic stigma that often surrounds the Evoque. Grab a cleverly-spec’d SE Tech for a car that can be as practical as a daddy Disco, but for a more attractive price.
£28000-£50000 Versions: SD4 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel (Jan ‘15 - Aug‘15), TD4 Ingenium 2.0 4cyl turbo-diesel (Aug ‘15 onwards).
Pros: More practical than an Evoque – and less vulgar, seven seats, still great off-road Cons: Back seats only for small mammals, price of high-spec models
