Goodwood launch for LR Classic accessories
3
It’s a “Can I get a large latte with soy milk, three shots of caramel, a double shot of espresso, and whipped cream.” kind of insurance policy.
IF IT’S IMPORTANT TO YOU THAT THE PARTS AND ACCESSORIES YOU USE ARE AS OFFICIAL AS POSSIBLE, Land Rover Classic has launched a new range for the original-shape Defender. These were introduced at the recent Goodwood Revival, where the company showed them off by displaying a quintet of vehicles including an expedition camper, a Black Pack equipped 110 Hard-Top, a 90 Station Wagon with a heritage aesthetic and two Classic Land Rover Trophy support trucks. escribing the range as ‘a curated new collection of original OEM quality parts and accessories for the Classic efender,’ Land Rover also previewed an official roof tent, designed in partnership with TentBox, which will become available for the Defender in 2024. This was displayed on the Expedition Camper model, built by camper specialists The Ply Guys, whose spec also included a drawer unit, kitchen module and cook station as well as Harris Tweed upholstery, Sawtooth alloys and a natural birch ceiling with integrated downlights. ‘In the Expedition Camper, the team have created a stunning vehicle that showcases the adventure capability of the iconic Classic efender,’ said Land Rover Classic’s Glen Kelly. ‘ longside this vehicle was an impressive display of our official authentic Land Rover Classic parts and accessories, fitted to a variety of different Classic Defenders, all with individual looks to suit different tastes. ‘We are reacting constantly to cus tomer demand for OEM quality items in the aftermarket, and engineer and
source our parts and accessories to the highest standards. Both The Ply Guys and TentBox are ideal partners as they both clearly share our commitment to quality and love the Classic Defender as much as our customers do.’ Land Rover describes the vehicle as ‘expedi tion ready’ other accessories included side steps, a bespoke cubby box and black headlight surrounds. The Black Exterior Pack also featured on a 110 along with 18” Sawtooths, LEDs, an Expedition roof rack and ladder and, on the inside, a leather steering wheel and SVX alloy gear and transfer knobs. The heritage-look 90, meanwhile, ‘provided an entirely differ ent character’ with ‘bright silver finishes for an understated luxury aesthetic.’ Rounding off the five strong display were efenders fitted with the Trophy I and Trophy II Tribute acks. evised to trade on the image of the ultra-exclusive client events organised for buyers
of various Works V8 editions, these include a Heritage grille, nudge bar, winch, winch bumper and painted Wolf steels in the case of the Trophy I, and an dventure grille, black 8 Saw tooths and headlamp surrounds, winch, winch bumper, and full Expedition Camo wrap on the Trophy II. In Land Rover’s words, ‘this col lection of unique, individual vehicles showcases the full breadth of the Land Rover Classic parts and accessories catalogue, catering for customers who demand OEM engineered parts in the aftermarket, that deliver the opportunity to customise and enjoy the Classic Defender as it should be. Prices for Defenders on the JLR Classic site at the time of writing range from £64,950 for a 2012 110 Pick-Up on 89,500 miles to £265,950 for a bespoke 2011 Works V8 on next to nothing, so ‘as it should be’ in this case appears to mean ‘very expensive.’

High Court quashes vehicle ban on White Stones lane
DA5502 Heavy Duty Steering Bars 90/110 £99.00 incl VAT
hite Stones, a long and extremely scenic right of way near Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog in North Wales, has over several years become the scene of an ugly war against green lane users. Starting off with acts of intimidation, this escalated in the middle of the last decade into physical violence with the use of spike traps buried in the ground as a way of attacking x s’ tyres. Fortunately, there were no instances of walkers, cyclists or horse riders being injured by these recklessly placed devices, which were removed on a number of occasions by members of the Green Lane ssociation GL SS using metal detectors to find them. More recently, however, those behind these criminal acts escalated their action by vandalising the lane itself on an
W
industrial scale, digging up its surface and using earth-moving machinery to leave it completely impassable. This led to a long period of inactivity by the local authority, whose responsibility it is to keep rights of way open. Finally, in May GL SS served notice on Wrexham Council that the highway was out of repair. Legal action does remain open, however the last two years have seen major repairs and clearance work undertaken to make the route once again usable. Whether those responsible will simply do it again remains to be seen the police’s reaction has tended to be to treat their behaviour as being less serious than, for example, a quad bike with the wrong sized number plate , however the tale took another, extraordinary twist this pril when
Wrexham County Council decided to make an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order ETRO which would close the lane to motor vehicles irrespective of its state of repair. This apparent case of siding with the criminal rather than the victim was strongly challenged by GL SS and the Trail Riders Fellowship, who took the case to the High Court claiming, among other things, failure to consult in accordance with the appropriate regulation. The local authority subsequently agreed to quash the ETRO, a move which was confirmed when the High Court made an order to the same effect, meaning the route is now open once again as it should always have been. ‘While this is a significant victory in our fight against unfair exclusion of recreational users,’ says the ssociation, ‘GL SS are aware that local peoples’ attitudes towards the use of this route are mixed. We wish to remind our members and other users that they are expected to comply strictly with the GL SS or TRF codes of conduct when using any green lane.’ This alludes to the anti-social behaviour by a small but deeply pernicious number of 4x4 drivers whose actions are capable of causing enormous damage to the land and nuisance to those who live close to rights of way. White Stones has seen its share of this behaviour over the years – and however unacceptable the actions of those who vandalised the lane may be, it needs to be recognised that their frustration is real. Everyone who heads here in a Land Rover needs to understand that even if not everybody wants to know, by behaving responsibly they can be an ambassador for their hobby.

Keep it real if you want a true classic
With the launch of a new range of OEM Classic Defender parts, it’s easier than ever to build a pitch-perfect throwback Landy Words: Tim Gibson SO, THE EDITOR WANDERS INTO MY OFFICE and starts spouting off about how much he wants a 109 because he’s getting to the other end of his midlife crisis and thinks it’s a grown up Land Rover or something. t least, he would have done that if we worked in the same office, rather than firing midnight emails to one another from opposite ends of the country. But, you know, WFH and all that the office is wherever you connect to Wi-Fi, right? ow I’m totally in agreement with the principle of buying a . nyone who’s seen the Stallone movie Cliffhanger will remember the pristine 109 his character drives, and surely share my visceral longing to own such a vehicle. Sly plays
a mountain rescue worker who gets caught up in a currency heist and saves the day while atoning for accidentally letting his best friend’s girlfriend plum met to her death in an earlier botched recovery. Classic 1990s action cinema. Up there with Diehard and Fireman Sam in the so-bonkers-it-must-be-brilliant stakes. The thing about owning a 109 is that you’d want it to be a minter, as good as the day it left Lode Lane. Or I would, at any rate. ut since our editor’s past form on classic 4x4 ownership includes discovering dead animals inside their actual interiors, parking a Range Rover Classic in a barn and forgetting where he put it, and lifting a Cherokee so high it resembled a monster truck, I can’t vouch for his tastes.
What I can say is that, if you want to build a Land Rover that looks authentic, the Land Rover Classic range of parts is a natural go to. Sure, they’re pricey and a little too branded. But they also provide the best way of replicating that fresh-out-the-box vibe that is becoming ever more desirable among collectors. So it’s great news that Classic Land Rover has launched a range of OEM Defender parts that gives owners everything they need to build the car of their dreams. The new line-up was launched at the Goodwood Revival in September, which seems a fitting venue for such an occasion. I wasn’t there, but friends who were tell me the expedition-ready Defender on the display stand was a thing of beauty with its roof tent and purpose-built camper interior.
ll the OEM bits on the five Classic Defenders at Goodwood are available to customers through the Classic Land Rover operation. s are the vehicles themselves, I think, which will have a strong appeal to wealthy customers who love Landies but don’t have time to build one of their own. In some respects, this is the bit of the Land Rover operation I continue to adore. It reminds me of the days I spent as a teenager, hanging around the parts department of Matford Land Rover in Exeter and asking what people were buying. They gave me a fab discount on a green oval branded golfing jumper
once, I recall – probably because they felt sorry for me given my obvious lack of friends, social polish and, let’s be honest, any chance of affording the vehicles on their forecourt outside. I wore that jumper to collect my first Land Rover, which was a moment of sorts. ll of which gets me somewhere, I’m sure. es, go ahead and buy your , Mister Kidd. It would have been the car of my dreams until a few weeks ago, too. ow, though, I think I’ll have a 110 and turn it into an expedition-ready beast using genuine Land Rover parts. Let’s just hope I don’t stumble across any currency thieves on my travels.

Another case of Landy Want Syndrome

t never fails. Mrs Kidd has been on the lookout for a new car. So I’ve been spending quite a lot of time poring over the ads on the Trader – and once I’ve exhausted all the sensible S Vs I find myself having a quick look, for work’s sake of course, at the Land Rovers people are wanting to move on. t the time of writing, Mrs Kidd has found her new car. Leaving me with a raging dose of Landy Want Syndrome ou know how that works. ou don’t need a new one but something sparks it in your head and before you know what’s happened, you’re on a mission. ormally for me, it’s a or that gets me going. The occasional early Disco or Range Rover can do it, but mainly I like forgetting how that ligament injury I did to myself when I was about means I never can drive a efender without my left knee suffering. Strangely, this time round I seem to have got myself obsessed with leafers. This has only ever happened when I’ve been up close and personal with patinated Series Is, and it’s got to be short-wheelbase but for some reason I’ve started getting itchy for a . I think the culprit make actually have been a ‘ Ford bodied Spitfire I photographed for Custom Car magazine a few months back. ot because there’s any resemblance between a Series Landy and a hot rod, but because the guy had done it as a zombie apocalypse motor. ou’ve heard of rat rods: this thing was more steampunk than rat, but either way if made me smile. nd I think that’s why I’ve got a in this wasted brain of mine. More body equals more space to dress up with mad stuff. I’m tempted to put some sort of garden cloche in the back, on the basis that this will be winsome rather than just fantastically stupid either way, as is the case with everyone who builds hot rods I want it to make people smile. It’s probably already making you scowl, though. nd yes, I’m talking about messing with a classic here. erhaps I should just get on with sorting my first, says my sensible head. ut the eldest child is going to be after a car next there’s no escaping it, is there Alan Kidd, Group Editor alan.kidd@assignment-media.co.uk

Oshe utomotive launches into extreme high end Defender market with Okavango 90 Words: Graham Scott Pictures: Oshe Automotive
his quite took me back. Not to South frica, which I motorbiked to in the 8 s. ut that quote: ‘The last thing you want to do is break down if the heat doesn’t get you, the wildlife might.’ Those summer nights in The Projects in South London, ah yes. David Lane, heading up Oshe utomotive, probably doesn’t go to that part of town. His Land Rover certainly wouldn’t. It looks far more comfortable
T
in the surroundings of the Royal uto mobile Club in Pall Mall, further north in London than in Sarf Lunnun. When we looked there were only a couple of properties for sale in Pall Mall, both of them just one-bedroomed apartments, both of them with price tags of over one million pounds. To be fair, one of them had a tiny balcony and if you leaned out assuming you weren’t a Russian who would never
now do such a thing you could see the R C Club. nd there, inside, not outside, you would have found the Okavango. Fortunately not the frican river, but the lat est Defenders ro have been upgraded into the stratosphere and given a price tag which means that if you didn’t buy the apartment, you could afford about four of these vehicles. Which would be tricky as production is planned at just four vehicles a year. With just a handful coming on stream sorry , the Okavango is planned as the beginning of a range that will develop the 110 model rather than just using the 90 you see here. Further projects will be called the Zambezi, the Sabie and the Limpopo. Or ‘the great grey green greasy Limpopo River, all set about with fever trees’ as the Just So Stories so eloquently put it. There’s a wrap around graphic that needs doing. So what’s with all the frica vibe ot exactly channelling Rudyard Kipling I’ll admit. To be fair, this is a programme based on heart and life and experience, as well as pampering the
one percent. Owner David Lane grew up on a South frican wildlife reserve, and that’s where you learn how import ant a reliable vehicle is when you’re out in the bush. In those early days there were Land Rovers and old Willys Jeeps and that’s when he made that quote at the beginning of this story. True enough. fter adventures around the world, he settled in London and started a company with the name of an frican thunder god. Oshe utomotive there fore is based on some solid, real-world experience although it’s quite hard to see how sweating round a game reserve in this open-top Land Rover 90 would end well. Perhaps the red interior is to disguise all the blood that might get spilled. The idea is that this is what Land Rover might have been or might have been developed into. Hardly a novel idea, as it’s a rich seam several com panies are currently mining. This is ‘a clean, historically respectful, modern interpretation of the Land Rover legend.’ in’t they all.
However, hurrah, they haven’t gone down the electric vehicle route – it’s doubtful the founder’s past involved finding many electric recharging points amid the rondavels. Instead there’s a ‘beating V8 heart’, in this case a . li tre but the long-wheelbase versions will have an LT1 6.2-litre V8 to make the heart beat a little faster. Feeding through an auto gearbox, this should give decent grunt whether deep in the Serengeti or deep in Sloane Square traffic. nd while it may look like all the effort has gone into the fancy bits, there’s a solid underpin ning that should engender confidence whether tackling a rocky slope in the Cape or driving over one of the hated ULEZ camera cars in Bexleyheath. In this dventure spec the Oshe Land Rover has semi-active suspension, with the five mappable settings electronically controlled, assisted by a G-sensor to further smooth out the handling. dd in Racing brakes and even a bespoke wiring loom. There’s attention to detail here – even the bulbs in the headlights have ‘Oshe’ tags. Much of that remains unnoticed at rest, but the interior, sometimes covered with a bikini roof, is all about being noticed. You will notice the Muirhead red leather seats and the red German woven carpet, with plentiful accents of both mahogany and acacia wood – very frican of course. The dash has been reworked extensively so now features more retro dials, an udison and Moreli audio system feeding through Burmester speakers, Bluetooth audio, wireless charging and all the other modern necessities. I’m not sure I’d want to have a crash with that mahogany steering wheel in front of me but maybe owners will employ a driver so they won’t worry too much. OF course, it’s still a and no amount of magic is going to make the interior a truly comfortable place to lounge. ut they’ve done their best, with reprofiling of the heated seats, and different pedal and handbrake arrangements to try to make more room. You can’t say that Oshe utomotive hasn’t had a really good, thoughtful and thorough go at converting a 90 into a luxury automobile, yet one that is still capable of tackling some serious outdoors. Which is good as prices start at £225,000 but we all know the end point will be nowhere near that as owners never can resist adding more. David Lane puts the appeal like this: ‘For the connoisseur, the improvements will be very noticeable and are a dramatic improvement.’ If that connoisseur is you, you can find the company at www.osheautomotive.com

Price: £78 plus VAT From: www.allisport.com ALLISPORT’S TDI OIL BREATHER TANK is a direct replacement for the rather uninteresting original separator used on Land Rovers with the 200 or 300 Tdi engine, or for the never less than legendary and sought-after 2.8 TGV razilian. It’s made featuring C C machined billet aluminium mounting flange and hose connections and comes supplied with a nitrile O-ring and stainless steel fixing bolt. ‘Standard breather pots use a gauze and mesh design which over time becomes blocked with oil deposits, reducing the capacity to release crankcase pressure and also allowing more oil vapour to enter the intake
system,’ explains llisport. ‘Our high performance replacement is designed to effectively reduce crankcase pressure build up on Tdi engines by using an internal baffle rather than the standard gauze and mesh design. ‘Our products are designed to have a practical purpose offering an improvement over the original black plastic units – as well as looking great in the engine bay.’ To this end, the tank is available in silver or black satin powder-coat. Designed and hand-made in-house, it’s fully TIG welded and comes with a lifetime warranty.

Milltek introduces upgraded exhaust for new Range Rover Price: From £3811 From: www.millteksport.com ALL SORTS OF PEOPLE BUY NEW RANGE ROVERS, and tint out the windows for all sorts of reasons. Some like to remain below the radar as much as you can in a statement vehicle like the Range Rover. But others like to go large with it: loud alloys, loud paintwork, loud hi fi. nd of course loud exhaust. nd if it’s a Range Rover you can’t just go and wrench off the silencer box. This isn’t a Vauxhall Corsa. Instead you need something bespoke, so you can answer with confidence when someone asks if you’ve knocked your exhaust off running over a sleeping policeman or sleeping poor person. nd Milltek will indeed give you that confidence. Its new exhaust for the new Range Rover, the P530, has been carefully tuned so the 4.4-litre V8
sounds more like the old 5.0-litre in the Range Rover SVR. The system retains not just the routing of the original and the particulate filter back system, but also the OEM valve functionality allied to a Milltek Sport Valve Controller so it’s like the old system but more so. The end out the back has ‘discreet downturned tips’ but you’re not likely to wonder where the sound is coming from. There’s enough bore here for the owner to manage some performance enhancements if desired without having to upgrade the system further. nd it uses T L. h yes, you say, nodding wisely, T304L, just the stuff. Strokes chin. ctually it is. It’s aircraft-grade stainless steel, a very durable form that should last for many years without any loss of appearance or performance.
ou’ve seen the price and if you own a new Rangey and are in the market for
an upgraded exhaust, you won’t care. Maybe it will matter to you, though, that
the system was designed, tested and manufactured entirely in Britain.
Best of both worlds from Terrafirma’s +2” air-to-coil kit for Discovery 3 and 4 and early Range Rover Sport

LOTS OF PEOPLE WHO BUY A DISCOVERY 3 OR 4 only do so because there are air-to-coil conversion kits available for them. Those from Terrafirma, for instance, which eliminate the danger of calamitous air suspension failures which start off by leaving you stranded at the sideof the road then follow it up by leaving you with an eye-wateringly expensive repair bill. Without such a thing, you’d be at the mercy of a system whose antics are at the heart of the vehicles’ reputation for being a money pit. But, as with the P38 before it, replacing troublesome and complex air springs with simple, effective steel coils is a great way of turning a nightmare vehicle into a dream. The nightmare in question could come in the shape of a Disco 3 or 4 body, or indeed that of a first-generation Range Rover Sport. This is mechanically similar to the D3, and the kit can be used on it too – just so long as it’s a version without Dynamic Response, which may be something to think about if you’re in the market for one of these vehicles. Terrafirma already offered a standard-height air-to-coil kit, which we covered in these pages a couple of issues back. But this new version is even more appealing – because it’s also designed to lift the vehicle by two inches. The kit includes pre-assembled front and rear struts, a sophisticated air suspension override module and vehicle-specific wiring looms. That is, it comes with two separate looms, one for the Discovery 3 and Range Rover Sport from 2005 to 2009 and the other for the Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport from 2010 to 2013. Just make sure you plug in the right one, and you’ll be well away. We mentioned the override module, and without this the whole thing would be a non-starter. The Disco was by this time not so much an off-road vehicle as a self-propelled knot of computerised trickery, and removing the air springs would send its sensors into a frenzy. As if that’s not bad enough, these vehicles had various other systems that worked in tandem with their air suspension, Terrain Response being the obvious one – so be thankful that the module will allow all the vehicle’s original electronic functions, including the operation of the info screen on its dash, to operate without it. Much as some traditionalists love to mock them, the Discovery 3 and 4, and indeed the Range Rover Sport, are capable of achieving pretty remarkable things off-road. Lifting them to the sort of height the air suspension would set itself to if you trimmed it for doing those pretty remarkable things is a very good start if you want to make the most of those skills it has locked within – and doing so while ridding it of a prime source of ownership woe sounds like a particularly clear case of the best of both worlds.

Goodwood hosts largest ever gathering of royal Land Rovers Land Rover’s relationship with the Royal family goes back to the very earliest days of the Series I. Today, there’s a rich variety of all kinds of vehicles with connections to the crown – and on the first anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s death, Land Rover brought together the biggest collection of them that’s ever been in the same place at once

his year’s Goodwood Revival got underway on 8 September – the first anniversary of the late Queen’s death. To mark the event, Land Rover put on a unique show of historic royal vehicles in Her Majesty’s honour, with a total of nine lapping the Goodwood circuit while two more remained on static display. The procession featured Landies and Range Rovers used by the Royal family in either an official capacity or privately as part of the household fleet. It includ-

It accompanied HM Queen Elizabeth II and HM The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on a six-month tour of the Commonwealth, and today forms part of the Royal Collection at the British Motor Museum in Gaydon. Behind it is a Series I originally ordered by HM King George VI and used by HM Queen Elizabeth II and other senior members of the Royal Family at Balmoral. The pair of Land Rovers remaining on static display were two of the earliest Royal vehicles – the first Series I State Review vehicle and another Series I ordered by HM King George VI. While all these vehicles are well known to enthusiasts, this was the first time they had ever been brought together. Land Rover has had a long association with the Royal Family, and as part of JLR today it continues to display
the Royal Warrant in recognition of its status as an official supplier. Lennard Hoornik, JLR’s Chief Commercial Officer, said: ‘We are proud of our Royal associations, which stretch back to the very origins of the business, and wanted to honour HM Queen Elizabeth II with a fitting tribute on the anniversary of her passing. We have never gathered such an extensive collection of Royal vehicles in this way and the commemorative parade was a fitting moment of remembrance.’

It’s part of the private Royal collection and, having been commissioned by HM The King, remains part of the active Royal fleet. Behind it is Jumbo, a stretched 130 with with not two but three doors on either side. This was built for the Royal Family to support outings at the Sandringham Estate, where it remains a working vehicle; its use at Goodwood was personally sanctioned by HM King Charles III

Below: Now part of the Royal Collection at the British Motor Museum, Gaydon, this 109” Series IIA Station Wagon was the first such vehicle to be fitted with the 2.6-litre straight-six. It was equipped with side steps, as can be seen here, as well as leather seats. There’s also a wooden dog guard ahead of the rear tub, which can just about be seen through the windscreen. The 109 is known to have been driven by HM Queen Elizabeth II. Alongside the Series IIA is the 1974 Range Rover State Review vehicle, which went into service in 1975 and was used until 2002. Its specially modified rear included fold-away seats and a lectern containing concealed umbrellas, and underneath the exhaust was fitted with an additional silencer to keep noise from the V8 engine to a minimum. This vehicle, too, is now in the Royal Collection at the British Motor Museum.

Now in a private collection, L31 is one of the 48 pre-production prototypes Rover made before introducing the 80” to the world. Its royal connection comes from its use in publicising the new Land-Rover, as it was then called, in which role it was photographed with HM King George VI. Seen with it here is the second official ceremonial review Land Rover to be made. This features blue side light lenses, which were illuminated whenever a member of the Royal family was being carried – a similar feature can be see on the 1974 and 1990 Range Rovers on these pages. This particular Series II, which now resides in the Royal Collection at Gaydon, was used as a reserve vehicle – the result being that it has only ever covered around 13,000 miles in its life

Setting the standard on replacement chassis – and now bulkheads too
ichards Chassis has been at the forefront of replacement Land Rover chassis manufacturing since the company was formed in 1984. All of our chassis are manufactured in the UK at our own factory located near the ‘steel city’ of Sheffield, using locally sourced parts and materials. Over the years we have gathered a huge amount of knowledge and experience, which has helped us to become the largest manufacturer of aftermarket Land Rover chassis. We are constantly investing in improving our processes and products – in the last few years we have completely redesigned and rebuilt all of our main assembly jigs and manipulators, and have installed a new fibre laser with a 4m bed. This investment has enabled us to improve both product quality and productivity, allowing us to manufacture up to chassis each week.
R
We manufacture a very wide range of chassis, from the very earliest Series Ones to the last of line Defenders, as well as Series 2a/2b Forward Controls and Discovery 2. With our newly revised jigs we also have the ability to fully jig certain ‘custom’ chassis, such as 6x6, and winch challenge chassis, and are happy to work with our customers to develop other bespoke chassis, for example for electric vehicle builds. We have recently currently developed a jig to allow us to build Range Rover Classic and Discovery 1 chassis, and these are now available to order. Our most popular chassis variants are generally available from stock for immediate collection, and interest free credit is available, subject to conditions. We ship our products worldwide, and within mainland Britain we have our own dedicated compact delivery trucks with offloading cranes that allow us to deliver safely even to remote locations.
Bulkheads After more than two years of press tool development, working in conjunction with DDS Metal Services, we now produce bulkheads for Defenders. We believe these are the best on the market. Utilising properly pressed panels has allowed us to replicate the feature of the original parts, meaning that fitting them is much less time consuming. We are currently producing bulkheads for efender . T , tdi, tdi and Td with further variants coming soon. These are offered in either galvanised or E coat finish E coating is a electrostatically assisted dip paint process which provides a smooth surface and full coverage inside and out, without causing the slight rippling which happens during galvanising.

Win a FREE Dinitrol treatment for your Land Rover and Rovers are an expensive investment. They are built to last, to be put through their paces and to still hold their value – but here at Braydon Elite, we have seen that more often than not that their underside tends to be forgotten. Corrosion is a heavily under-estimated problem in the world of Land Rovers! So, after experiencing high levels of demand for rustproofing treatment, we have recently taken the step of becoming an approved Dinitrol treatment centre. initrol has been providing a quality solution in rustproofing since . It increases the longevity of our customers’ vehicles – and can add to their resale value, too.
L
We carefully chose Dinitrol because: It provides a tough, elastic, waxy protective coating, rather than a sticky wax that dirt and grit tend to cling to • The protection level is longer-lasting than that of other products Its resistance to water, humidity and environmental influences Its resistance to extreme heat and cold, and to wear To celebrate our new status, we are running a special competition at the Great ritish Land Rover Show – with the prize being a free Dinitrol treatment for your Land Rover. Happy families The time in your life when you have a young family is traditionally one when Land Rovers take a back seat. Time is not on your side, and nor is money. But what if the kids themselves are on your side? What better excuse could you have for building a vehicle you… sorry, they… will really love? Words: Tim Gibson Pics: Steve Taylor

It’s easy to sympathise. ou can do more on a week at Center arcs than it costs to fit a lift kit, a cage, a winch and a locker. Kids are the best thing ever, but there’s no surer way to get rid of all your time and all your money. nd when your previous way of doing that had four wheels, it stands to reason that the smell of hot mud on your ex haust is going to be getting replaced by the smell of well, you know what kids are famous for. ndrew Rogerson managed to buck that particular trend. He delivered it to them with a sum total of miles under its wheels and asked them to turn it into a truck that was up to the job of showing his kids what this off road ing lark was all about. This meant safety was an even bigger priority than normal, so job number one was to fit a roll cage. ‘Land Rovers are actually made of pretty thin aluminium when you look,’ says ndrew. ‘So it was always my intention to have a cage fitted.’ It came from Safety evices, which is a good start, and its full exo design means superior tree rubbing skills and no intrusion on interior space. o hard metal tubes for young heads to bash into, either. nderneath, on went a suspen sion kit featuring springs and shocks. lenty of potential for articula tion there, then – and to help the vehi cle achieve it, the springs and shocks were fitted along with stainless steel dislocation cones and bigger trailing arms for better droop. islocation was the ig Thing in s back then, ot that it’s gone away now, but you don’t hear people talking about it anything like as much these days. erhaps that’s because everyone’s desperately trying to turn their s into blingers instead. Talking of strong things, ndrew fitted front and rear diff guards as well as an aluminium fuel tank cover and rear corner protectors. The steering bars were uprated to an ars, while a Mantec snorkel was plumbed in along with raised axle and gearbox breathers made from flexible poly urethane. These are joined together through a unique four into one fitting, meaning they only require one single pipe to go up to the raised air intake at the top of the snorkel. Talking of air, it comes in to the Td engine through a K filter and goes out again via a straight through mid pipe in the exhaust. Every little helps,
as they say, though with a remapped EC a little becomes a lot – bhp’s worth, no less, which more than makes up for all the extra weight the is carrying. There’s plenty of get up and go there for the road, and no shortage of grunt for when ndrew and his family are having a good time in the mud. Grunt is also required for the ’s day job – a rather unusual one which involves removing dead horses from where they fell. We’ve met people from a good many walks of life over the years while doing this magazine, but animal undertaker was definitely a new one. There’s a detachable towbar for hauling ndrew’s trailer to wherever its sombre duty needs to be carried out, and also at the back of the vehicle you’ll spot a swing away spare wheel carrier which doubles as a mounting point for a high lift jack. t the sharp end everything’s relative , ndrew decided to have some auxiliary lighting installed. ‘This was mainly for the kids,’ he laughs, ‘to make the Land Rover look the part ’ With seven inch spotlights on the bumper and aluminium chequer plate wing tops and sill protectors, it definitely has a bit of Tonka toy cool going on – and when you add in the four Hella spotlights

Still, ndrew’s kids love the truck and that’s what matters most. High capacity
T
he High Capacity Pick-Up was a much-admired model in the old Defender range. But before the era of leafers, it was part of the 109” Series III line-up. Compared to the standard pick-up, the HCPU was even more of a workhorse,
with a longer, wider bed allowing it to carry that much bigger loads. It was a rarity, though – and the sort of use they were built to endure means less of them survived than normal. So if you manage to find an original one, it almost doesn’t matter what condition it’s in – whether
Series I (1948-1958)
The Series I, particularly in its 80” guise, is the most sought-after of
all Land Rovers. Its engineering and design give it real charisma, but parts aren’t readily available. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but see it through and the result will be worth mega bucks. Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover. ecause with restored examples changing hands
Series III (1971-1985)
The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar to the Series IIA in mechanical
terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout the length of its production run. In 1980, the engines switched to a more durable five bearing crank rather than the old threebearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with.
Lightweight (1968-1984)
These military vehicles can easily be distinguished from regular
Land Rovers. To mimic the civvy Series machines, the Series III model built from 1972 onwards, also had its headlights switched out to the wings. Lightweights add an extra dimension to owning a Land Rover. Their military history and details mean you get a truck with more stories to tell – and that stands
90/110 (1983-1990)
This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can
also take you just about anywhere in the world. Early 90s and 110s are starting to be a real collector’s item. ut you’ll likely be searching far and wide for a pristine example. These Land Rovers had coil sprung suspension, new engines and a world-beating level of rugged off-road capability.
it’s rough as old boots or shiny as a new pin, you’ve got a worthwhile classic Land Rover on your hands. Of course, over time a number of 109” vans, truck-cabs and soft-tops may have been converted into things that look like hi caps. ou might find one with a genuine back body, though it’s more likely to have some sort of dropside affair. Either way, these too are potentially good Land Rovers and very well worth restoring –
Insure a 109” HCPU with Adrian Flux from £107 but if you want rarity value, the real thing will always be hard to beat.
• Based on a 1982 2.25 petrol valued at £15,000. Up to 3000 miles per year. 50 year old driver, fully comp, agreed value, £105 excess

much of that early charm. Prices are on the increase, however, as these vehicles start to come into their own as collector’s items. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines were underpowered and rather noisy. The Series II/IIA has a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of
refinement. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks, both under the bonnet and underneath the body. Pros: A sound investment to restore. Some now MOT exempt Cons: Bulkheads and chassis rot, springs prone to seizing
£2500-£30,000 Series IIA/IIB FC (1962-1971)
£2500-£15,000
for millionaire money, preservation is the aim of the game. The earlier the vehicle, the more it will be worth. The sky’s the limit – but can you really put a price on such an icon? Pros: Heritage, charm, a true classic, the original Land Rover Cons: Availability of parts, price tag on early 80s
They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now. Pros: Most affordable way into Series ownership. Still has the Series pedigree. Parts still widely available Cons: Not yet as desirable as the earlier Series models
The Series II/IIA is more affordable than a Series I, yet it still carries
Forward Control Land Rovers are a cult within a cult. They’re a real
rarity – with all the cachet, pride and immense awkwardness that comes with this status. y ‘rare’, we’re talking about less than 2500 Series IIA FCs in total. And they tended to have a very hard life, so not many have survived to tell the tale. Forward-Control models differed from everyday Series IIs by
£3500-£22,000 101 (1972-1978) out from the crowd. They’re a rare breed, though – so if you’ve got one, it’s worth keeping hold of. Pros: Not like all the other Land Rovers out there. Military background. Lovely 2.25 petrol Cons: A earance isn’t to everyone’s taste Exclusivity over regular models means they command a price premium
Only ever sold to the Army, the 101 became a cult vehicle when
£7500-£26,000 the time came for demob. They were flogged off at very low prices and turned into off-road toys – not something you’d do with one today, given the rarity and classic value they’ve taken on. Compared to the IIA/IIB FC, the 101 is more fun thanks to its V8 engine. It’s still a military tool, though – some still have fixtures
£3500-£35,000 127 (1985-1990) A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5 natasp diesel: they’re robust and as simple as they come. Pros: Excellent arts availability Easy to or on Unlimited potential for mods and restos Cons: Puny engines (V8 apart) Not many left in good condition
The 127 was built on a special production line in Solihull which
having heavy-duty ENV axles, but engine-wise they had the familiar 2.25 petrol and diesel lumps. So, don’t expect performance – but do expect to be given an ‘interesting’ time in the workshop… Pros: A Land Rover like no other, if that’s hat you ant Cons: Es ecially brutal to drive, and to nd arts
and fittings from their rmy life, which adds interest. This is a vehicle for enthusiasts, though, with costs that are sky-high even by Land Rover standards. Pros: Master of the road. Lovely V soundtrac Everybody ho sees one loves it Cons: Monumental running costs Ex ensive to buy, too
£6500-£27,000 took 110 chassis and stretched them. It was designed for military and commercial users and came as a high-capacity double-cab. These days, it’s very rare to find a that hasn’t been hammered, restored and/or converted, or all three. People looking for a work truck tend to go for a later 130, so the is more of an enthusiast’s
motor. It’s popular for home brewed overland conversions, too. Almost all 127s have had an engine conversion by now, too. Lots to be wary of, then – but it’s a hell of a lot for your money. Pros: Enormous si e means limitless potential and character Cons: Un ieldy Sure to have had a colourful life

Defender 200 Tdi (1990-1994) £4000-£38,000 Defender 130 (1990-2016)
The Tdi engine, which arrived with the Defender name, can last for
decades if it’s looked after. Find one that’s had all its oil changes a tall order and it’ll go round and round) the clock. The good thing about the earlier Tdi is that it’s simpler than the later . What you gain here you lose in refinement, but this is seen by many experts as the best Defender of them all.
The LT gearbox in the Tdi is more truck-like than the later R 8 , and these vehicles didn’t come with bling. Just be sure it’s an original Tdi you’re getting, not an old Discovery conversion. Pros: The perfect combination of tradition and modernity Cons: Lots of horrible and/or deceptive ones around
Defender 300 Tdi (1994-1998)
The 300 Tdi engine is very different to the 200 unit it replaced, though
the two are related. It’s much more refined and smoother to drive, though there are more electronics involved so later versions in particular are less of a I fix. The arrival of the 300 Tdi also brought with it the R380 gearbox. This used to have a terrible reputation for relability, but most have been put right by now and they’ve
Defender TDCi (2007-2016)
The last Defenders gained modern 2.4 and 2.2 TDCi engines and
smooth six-speed gearboxes, They still had phenomenal off-road ability and were even okay to sit in. Famously, this was the Defender that actually had a dashboard Many people dislike the TDCi, especially the earlier 2.4, but they still change hands for huge money – especially when the likes of Kahn or Twisted have been
When Land Rover introduced the Defender name, it was actually the
£12,500-£35,000
that changed the most. That’s because unlike the old 127, it was built on a proper chassis of its own rather than a stretched 110 frame. The advent of the Tdi engine was the making of the 130, too. At last, Land Rover could make them pull properly without returning single figure fuel economy by using a hard-worked V8.
£4500-£43,000 Defender Td5 (1998-2007) become sought after for their light clutch and better shift action. It was during the Tdi era that Defenders started getting things like alloys, too. You might even find one that’s not been off road Pros: Strength and simplicity. Perha s the de nitive Defender Cons: Sure to be very different to when it left the factory
The Td engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s
involed. You will always pay a premium for a Puma, and a Tdi or Td5 may turn out to be a better purchase. Even then, though, look after it and you may well never see depreciation. Pros: Ef ciency, creature comforts, off-road prowess Cons: Price, electronics, TDCi engine is unloved
If the subject of the new Defender comes up in enthusiast circles, try
still be a DIY machine. Parts are in plentiful supply, as is specialist knowledge – and it’s one of the best Land Rovers ever. Pros: Off-road capability, power, overall reliability. Very well suited to being modi ed Cons: Rear chassis, premium prices, monstrous road tax on later vehicles
£55,000-£165,000
to steer it away on to something safer. Like rexit, for example. Much as it may infuriate purists, however, the Defender is actually a very wonderful thing. It’s kind of like an old one, only with space, comfort and equipment. The big difference is that you can’t work on it yourself. This goes for maintenance and, crucially,
making modifications – a market Land Rover wants to take back and have for itself. It won’t hold its value long-term the way an original-shaper does, either. But this is still a superb vehicle. Pros: Comfort, capability, rugged tness for ur ose Cons: Not cheap to buy. Lacks the old one’s basic charm

Freelander (1997-2006)
The Freelander 1 is a cheap gateway into Land Rover ownership.
£400-£5500 Freelander 2 (2006-2015)
It’s also a notable classic in its own way, as it heralded the start of the company’s modern era. It has its issues, though. The viscous coupling is expensive to replace and can be upset simply by running mismatched tyres. The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures. Today’s replacements are much
more robust, but a late diesel is your best bet. Even these can go calamitously wrong, though. This was a more complex car than it needed to be, and buying one for sweeties now doesn’t change that. Pros: Cheap to buy, no big rust issues, surprisingly able off-road Cons: All sorts of things can go wrong, some very expensively
The Freelander 2 was a massive improvement on the model
£2000-£17,500
it replaced. It’s a refined and affordable SUV with a strong engine, good equipment and a decent level of practicality. It’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there, too. But do be aware of the rear diff and Haldex unit for costly outlays. The 2.2-litre diesel engine is a strong performer, though for a
Range Rover Classic (1970-96) £4000-£275,000 Range Rover (1994-2002)
The original Rangey is a classic you can use everyday – and there
are people who do just that, preferring to invest new-car money in a restoration than spending it on a current model. It’s a smart policy, too. n early two-door can cost mega money, but any Classic will appreciate in value if kept in good condition – and sought-after rarities like the CSK and LSE can be a gold mine.
Range Rover (2002-12)

The fifth generation Range Rover takes its position as a luxury car
A Mk2 Rangey in good working order is still a sensational car to
This isn’t a I motor, but it certainly is a Range Rover, with brilliant off-road and towing skills. It relies a lot on electronics, but they work wonders – and the deepdown engineering is very robust. Pros: Great off-road, luxury, image, TDV8 powerplants Cons: Very complex. Huge running costs
The current Range Rover is a majestic 4x4. All the engines in the
£1000-£28,000
own, even today. The problem is that they’re very complex and very, very good at going wrong. Air suspension failure is the norm. Head gaskets can let go. Electronics are laughably flaky. And parts can cost the earth – as will the labour bills. Perhaps worst of all, nowadays it’s very hard to find one you can be sure hasn’t
£2200-£27,000 Range Rover (2012-22)
liable than the 8. It’ll still cost a lot to run, however, and drivetrain faults and underbody corrosion are not unknown. The TDV8 engine is sublime, but you’ll pay more to get one – especially the 4.4, though the 3.6 has all the power you need. The V8 petrol, on the other hand, is temptingly cheap. Guess why…
Range Rover (2022-on)
An awful lot of Rangeys have been neglected and/or abused, and you can still buy they cheap. ut if you’ve got the skills, and access to parts, restoring one would be the ultimate hobby that pays. Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust, availability of parts for early models
bargain search out one with the unpopular 3.2 petrol unit. Either way, it’s a fine S V to drive. Prices have fallen since the production ended, too – £10,000 now gets you one worth having. Pros: Reliability, re nement, economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing
spent at least part of its life being worked on by idiots Still, you’ll get a classy motor with proper off-road and towing skills. It’s becoming a classic, too, and prices are still tiny considering everything you get. Pros: Luxury, price, a Land Rover that doesn’t rust Cons: Electrics Be very afraid
£20,000-£150,000
range supply copious amounts of power, and its road manners are absolutely impeccable. It’s startlingly capable off road, too, even if getting one muddy would feel like bad form. Most that leave the tarmac probably do so only when their owners are in the mood to blow some grouse out of the sky.
Inside, the Range Rover’s cabin is superb, with sumptuous trim and cutting-edge equipment. Prices are, of course, as immense as the vehicle itself. But if you can afford it, so too is the presence a Rangey will give you. Pros: Class, luxury, engines, vast all-round capability Cons: Price
£99,000-£220,000 Range Rover Sport (2005-2013) £9500-£20,000
to greater extremes than ever, with lavish equipment and endless opportunities for personalisation. It’s a supreme lifestyle wagon for the rich: to many of Land Rover’s traditional fans, on the other hand, it’s the supreme irrelevance. If you can afford one, few cars could be as pleasing. However if you can afford one and you love
Land Rovers, you’re likely to be thinking about how many real ones you could buy with this sort of money. It wouldn’t make a bad way to tow your collection about the place, though… Pros: Immense prestige, and sublime both to be in and drive Cons: To at least 99% of people it’s utterly divorced from reality
The Sport is mechanically similar to the iscovery – meaning it’s
a supreme off-roader as well as being a funky road ride. It doesn’t handle like a sports car, but is agile enough for an SUV. A Discovery of the same era is far more practical, however, while a full-fat Rangey has more class. The Sport is still a massively able tow barge, though, in addition to all its other virtues.
ou’re looking at a car which many people associate with rich chavs and criminals, however. And being based on the Discovery 3, it can’t help but share that vehicle’s reputation as a money pit. Pros: Decent performance and all-round dynamics Cons: A Disco 3 is more usable. Ex ect horri c running costs
Range Rover Sport (2013-22) £19,500-£140,000 Range Rover Sport (2022-on) £80,500-£145,000
The second-generation Range Rover Sport is 400kg lighter than
the original, meaning it’s almost economical to run. It feels really nimble and agile on the road, too, and it comes with a range of engines giving it a brisk turn of pace. Some won’t like the flamboyant posture, while others will love it. Either way, inside the cabin it’s very nearly as luxurious as the full-fat Range Rover.
The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Depreciation has started to bring down the purchase price – though you’ll never run one on a shoestring. Pros: Performance, re nement, glorious interior Cons: Marmite image. Pricey to buy and run
Hilariously, this is what counts as the affordable way in to owning a
new Range Rover. The Sport is less about being chauffeur driven and more about lording it over other aspirational school runners, but once again it’ll be lovely to drive. Like the full fat Range Rover a phrase which has never felt more appropriate), the Sport is available with an old-school V8 engine that gives you racecar performance in
return for NASA-level emissions. Most UK customers with opt for an altogether healthier plug-in hybrid, but they’ll still get a vehicle that’s brutally fast a well as being able to do the normal Range Rover stuff. Pros: Smooth, re ned, comfy and game for a laugh, too Cons: Still hasn’t uite shed its proceeds-of-crime image
Range Rover Evoque (2011-19) £7500-£41,000 Range Rover Evoque (2019-on) £31,000-£60,500
When the Evoque was launched, it signalled JLR’s intent on hitting
the masses. Given that it was the company’s fastest selling vehicle, they clearly hit the brief, even if it wasn’t for the traditional Land Rover owner. It’s actually still a capable thing off tarmac – but it’s definitely more at home on the road. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and
because there are so many out there, used prices are tempting. There’s a Convertible model, too, as well as three and five door tin tops. We say stick to the latter, and be sure to get one with W . Pros: Economy, handling, iconic concept-car image Cons: Cramped rear seats, not as practical as a Disco Sport
Most Range Rovers all look the same at the front now, but the new
Evoque has adopted a similiar back end to the larger Velar. It’s not just the exterior that mimics the looks of the larger vehicle, however, as the Evoque has gained the latest Touch Pro Duo tech and a hike in quality. The main highlight of the new Evoque is the fact the majority of the range is made up of mild
hybrids, available with diesel and petrol engines combining to an electric motor. Only the base D150 Evoque escapes the electrification, and we’d avoid it as it doesn’t have four-wheel drive. Pros: Feels like a proper Range Rover inside Cons: Petrol engine is poor on fuel economy, even as a hybrid

Range Rover Velar (2017-on) £27,500-£75,000 Discovery (1989-1998)
The Velar a competent cruiser and has received numerous accolades
because of its particularly handsome exterior. It’s based upon the same architecture as the Jaguar F-Pace but has greater off-road ability and is available with a wide choice of engines, most of which combine good economy with usable everyday performance. The interior is Land Rover’s most advanced cabin to date, with
Discovery 2 (1998-2004)
The Disco 2 is powered by the Td5 engine, one of Land Rover’s most
most reliable units ever. It drives well, too – mated to a manual box it has more guts even than the V8 option, which is surprisingly bland but predictably thirsty. Whereas the isco was prone to body rust, the is fine here. Instead, its chassis rots like a carrot, especially towards the back end. Also at the back, seven-seat
Discovery 4 (2009-2017)
Somewhere between a facelift and a whole new model, the Disco 4
is basically an evolution of the 3. It looks similar and is still a practicality monster, as well as being hugely impressive on and off-road and a hero in front of a trailer, but despite being only subtly tweaked inside feels far more luxurious. That hasn’t prevented it from suffering all the same issues as time has gone on. You need to
Discovery Sport (2015-19)
The Discovery Sport packs seven seats into a Freelander-sized
body and dishes up an appealing all-round blend of comfort, kit and general driving manners. The third row of seats is only suitable for little ‘uns, though, and off road it’s a Discovery in name only. It’s a more practical proposition than the closely related Evoque, and you won’t need to live with the fear of Posh Spice jokes. You
other models expected to follow the Velar in due course. But is there a whiff of style over substance Well, it’s a very good S V. ut you don’t half pay a pre mium for those suave looks... Pros: Stylish design, chic cabin, excellent tech features Cons: Feels like an indulgence, especially at such a high price
The original Discovery was based on the Range Rover of the time,
with the same 100” wheelbase and a slick body containing a spacious, flexible cabin. It was well equipped and refined, and it came with the wonderful Tdi engine. Over time, the isco’s epic abil ity meant almost all of them were hammered at playdays. Lower body rust is a big killer, too. So it’s rare to find a good one now,
£1000-£11,000 Discovery 3 (2004-2009) models had air-suspension, with all the horrors that brings. Mainly, D2 owners will tell you about rogue electronics. And leaky sunroofs. They still love their trucks, though, which says a lot. Pros: Td5 power and reliability, great all-rounder, lots of choice Cons: Chassis rust, electronics, leaky sunroofs, air suspension
The Disco 3 is an astonishing allround vehicle. It’s good on the road
and capable off-road, genuinely luxurious and a giant of a tow truck, and as well as being able to seat seven adults it can be turned into a van with a totally flat rear load area. But it was also astonishingly complex, and these days it has a reputation as a money pit. Air suspension and electronic
£6000-£40,000 Discovery 5 (2017-on) start off by buying the best you can possibly afford – and at the top of the market, they don’t come cheap. Get it right, though, and this is as good as a modern Land Rover has ever been. Pros: ost LR fans’ idea of hat a Range Rover should be like Cons: Still a potential money pit, and the best are expensive
£12,500-£33,000 might shudder at the price if you’re buying new, though – but on the used market, there are some tidy looking deals to be had, even on high-spec examples. Pros: More practical than an Evo ue, and less vulgar Seven seats. Capable enough off-road Cons: Back seats only for small mammals. Price of top models
The Discovery 5 is a versatility monster. As an all-rounder, at
launch it was the most capable Land Rover on sale – the new Defender will be going some to wrest that crown from it. All the engines in the range are refined and flexible, and its chassis is remarkably supple for such a big vehicle. There’s no end of electronics working away in the background, but the effect is very
Discovery Sport (2019-on)
The second-generation Disco Sport came along only four years
after the first. That’s because once again, it’s related to the Evoque, which was ready for a full new model in 2019. The Sport is a premium midsized SUV with seven seats and a decent level of off road ability. It’s a massively popular choice for the school run – and, with the arrival of a plug-in hybrid option last
£800-£18,000 and when you do they tend to be priced with a lot of optimism. Very early ones in tip-top condition are full-on classics, too. For a sound one to own, we’d look for a tidy 300Tdi. Pros: Price, practicality, parts availability E ic off road ability Cons: The body rusts li e it’s been doused in sea water
£1850-£16,000 handbrakes are big sources of woe, cam belts are a body-off job to change and rust is becoming more of an issue. Get a good one, though, and it’s all the car you’ll ever need. Pros: Good at everything. Lots of accessories available now Cons: As fragile as you expect, and then some
£24,500-£95,000 convincing – as is an interior that might make you wonder why you’d bother paying more for a Range Rover. Just be careful not to go wild with the options and end up paying more for a Discovery… Pros: Immense blend of comfort and practicality Cons: Feels more like a softroader than a proper Discovery
£21,000-£62,000 year, as a company car. Quality has taken a step up from the first model – it’s now a convincing pre mium vehicle, and the range offers enough choices to suit anybody with the means to buy one. Pros: Classy and practical cabin, all-round good to drive Cons: You can get a Defender for the price of some models
