SECOND CHANCE You should always strike when the iron is hot.

Mike Cinderby didn’t, when he turned down the chance to buy a Tomb Raider Defender back when they were new. So when opportunity came knocking once more, he acted fast – and went on to make his rare 90 better than ever.

ibson’s ab Question Time

Don’t fret about identifying the best Land Rover ever. The fun is in the asking Words: Tim Gibson Picture: Nick Dimbleby Last week I was involved in one of those discussions that would once have taken place over a pint following a club meet. Nowadays, they happen online, meaning they can last forever with no landlord to kick you out at last orders.

The prompt for this exchange was a typically innocuous question on a orum ‘ you could have any and over, hat ould it be ’ I usually resist contributing to these sorts of threads, since that way madness lies. But I was trying to avoid a really dull piece o ork, so thou ht ’d offer my wisdom.

he standard ans er to the ‘ est and over ever’-type uestion is, o course, ‘Depends’ Depends on your li estyle Depends hat you’re usin it or Depends ho much money you’ve got to spend. But this question seemed more speci c than that assumed that as expected to take all of these factors into account when answering. And so I did. I considered everything that I need from a 4x4, which is a mix of off-road ability, a modicum of comfort, cheap running costs and enough towing capacity to lug our caravan the length and breadth of the country. But I also considered what sort of and over is a true enthusiast’s car My old Freelander 2 was pretty good in most of the areas listed above, but it never felt like a proper Landy. Owning it made me eel like someone ho’d spent their whole life as a Pavarotti an, but ho’d only ever seen os Carreras in concert. Good, but not quite the real deal. plumped or the 2 di Discovery ’d have a re urbished one ith a fettled engine, galvanised chassis and reshened interior ut ’d keep it stock, no crazy suspension lifts or body armour ust a strai ht Disco, as nature intended. Perfect for the rub of daily life out in the sticks. hat ud ment didn’t ru e too many feathers, though a few wondered why I ouldn’t choose a De ender, hat ith it being the archetypal Land Rover and all he ans er is simple the rst- eneration Disco is hat the De ender needed to become for people like me. bit com er, a bit roomier, but ith the same off-road hardware beneath the skin. I was challenged on my choice of engine. I chose the 200Tdi for its doughty simplicity, but some people had ondered hy ouldn’t o or the more re ned and mar inally more economical 300Tdi. And thus did I fall down a rabbit hole, furiously reminding myself of the relative merits of each power plant. It came to me about an hour later, a head full of engine codes and project names like ‘ alcon’ and ‘ emini’ nd then I realised that this is the point of Land Rover fandom. No matter where you are or hat you’re doin , there’s always a way to get lost in your hobby. The best Land Rover ever? The ans er is irrelevant ut ndin it is the best fun ever.

If you’re still relatively new to the world of off-roading, but would like to take your skills to the next level, why not do so in the most relaxing way possible? Get yourself down to a Social Morning at David Bowyer’s Off Road Centre and get your day off to the best possible start here are many things in life that appear to be stressful and potentially traumatic. For example, if you were to witness a Thai massage taking place, you might also be wondering whether preparing a statement for a jury is worthwhile doing alongside. Is it murder? Is it witchcraft? Still, the point stands and what some people do in their own time might not always appeal to others. While a Thai massage may seem like an early grave to some, others might prefer to pull some shapes at the wheel of a 4x4. hose ho don’t like o -roadin have probably never tried it. All the information you need – in one place – to buy your perfect Landy Insure your Series III with Adrian Flux from £95

Dealing in Diesel

W

hile some members and establishments of society deem diesel to be the fuel of Satan, when it comes to classic Land Rovers, it could just be the way forward. Series III prices have slowly begun

to rise and with its favourable power and re nement, it’s understandable to see fewer 2.25-litre petrol options being available, with its counterpart diesel seemingly offered in an abundance. Sure, the petrol is the sweeter motor, but if you want to capitalise on market

changes and ultimately end up with a classic that boasts bags of personality and an engine that still provides a robust work ethic, whilst bringing the agricultural charm to the surface, you can do worse that punt for one of the 2.25 diesel Series III Land Rovers.

Series I (1948-1958) If you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go. The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike.

ts 1 ’s en ineerin ives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then if you can source all the bits you need and come up with a nished e ample, it could ell etch mega bucks.

Series II/IIA (1958-1971) In 1958, the second-generation Land Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders. Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts.

The prices are on the increase, however, as these 60-year-old vehicles start to come into their own as an investment and collector’s item A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2.0-litre diesel, were underpowered and rather noisy.

Series III (1971-1985) Following on from the Series IIA, the Series III emerged in 1971 with a few cosmetic tweaks and safety features to freshen up the model. Headlights were shifted out to the wings in-line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top

o the bulkhead – e’re not sure it’s the ull ve stars on the latest uro scale, though. he eries asn’t too dissimilar to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout its production, although in 1980 the 2.25 motors switched to a

Lightweight (1968-1984) Possibly the ugly duckling of the Series and over amily – but that doesn’t mean to say you on’t nd much love for the Series Lightweights. These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance

that does divide opinion when you and your mates are in the pub. To mimic the civvy Series machines, the SIII LWT – built from 1972 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings. These Series Lightweights throw up an e tra dimension to and over o n-

* Based on a 1976 2.25 diesel covering 3,000 miles per annum, 50-year-old driver, with green lane, off-road cover, agreed value and £100 excess

£7000-£75000 Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished e amples no retailin here they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game. The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets. But can you really put a price on such an icon?

£3500-£35000 The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an e tra thin layer o re nement over the Series I. While the engines have e cellent lon evity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks, both under the hood, but also underneath the body.

£3000-£25000 more durable ve-bearin crank rather than the three-bearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with. They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.

£3500-£18000 ership, with military history and touches often machine-gunning the vehicle. It means you get a Land Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd. hey’re a rare breed, so i you nd one, it could be worth keeping hold of.

Freelander 2 (2006-2015) Most people will turn their noses up at reelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true Land Rovers. But while you should turn your nose up at the Freelander 1, the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think. Because of it being replaced by the

Discovery Sport, the FL2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels o re nement, a stron 2 2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make or a reat amily vehicle lus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there... generally.

Add less noise to your Defender... Acoustic mat systems from Wright Off-Road The acoustic mat system has been designed to drastically reduce noise entering the cabin of your Land Rover. Made from cast dense polyurethane, the mat is built to industrial standards for reducing noise levels often found in construction equipment. It provides a hard wearing, durable surface that can withstand constant daily use and is easy to clean. A custom fit mat drastically reduces noise entering the cabin and panel reverberation.

> Reduces noise - the complete system negates the need for engine and gearbox blankets > Hard wearing - harder wearing than rubber - it will probably outlast your Land Rover > Easy to fit - no glue and is transferable > Easy to clean - can be hosed out > Insulation - provides insulation to keep heat out (or in) > Inert - mat will not rot or hold water unlike felt or carpet > Resistant - material is fuel, oil, water and sunlight resistant > Fire retardant > Recyclable DA1744GREY
