In Iowa, Rick Santorum gave Romney a run for his money, and in New Hampshire Paul finished close behind. Both candidates, and others, are pushing to challenge Romney for the Republican nomination. Phyllis Schlafly, a conservative Republican activist, said many Republicans are looking for a more traditional option to compete against Romney. “What’s pretty obvious is that the Republican establishment and the media are for (Romney), but

Ohio State is involved in an FBI information sharing program called InfraGard that some critics say lacks transparency and raises questions about privacy rights. InfraGard, which began in the FBI’s Cleveland Field Office in 1996, is a private organization that serves as a public-private partnership for sharing information and intelligence to prevent hostile acts against the United States. Many civil and privacy rights groups are weary of InfraGard’s transparency policies. Amy Murray, OSU spokeswoman, confirmed in an email that OSU is an Infragard member after she spoke to OSU security network personnel. “OSU is an InfraGard member, and in the past, several of the university’s Office of the Chief

Information Officer security staff have served on the local InfraGard board,” Murray said in the email. “However, none currently are.” Lillie Coney, associate director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, said InfraGard is deceptive in how they present themselves. “What they are doing looks illegal. They are presenting themselves as a federal agency program, but they are not,” Coney said.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center is a public interest group that focuses on protecting privacy, the First Amendment and constitutional values. Matthew Rothschild, editor of “The Progressive,” a monthly political magazine, has written about InfraGard’s activities in the past. Rothschild said the activities of InfraGard should raise some questions. “I am very surprised OSU is a member of this

Messenger agreed with Schlafly that South Carolina could be indicative of a final result. Messenger said he expects a resurgence of Santorum or Texas Gov. Rick Perry. While South Carolina might bring a turn of events, in his victory speech Tuesday night, Romney was presumptuous of his name on the November ticket against President Barack Obama. “The president has run out of ideas; now he’s running out of excuses,” Romney said. Romney asked that voters in South Carolina join New Hampshire “to make 2012 the year (Obama) runs out of time.” Chris Redfern, chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party, said the results in New Hampshire hurt Romney.

the grassroots really don’t like to be bossed around neither by the media or by the Republican establishments who think they run things,” Schlafly said. “I think (the) grassroots may rise up and have a different candidate when they can figure out who they want to concentrate on.” Romney now has two primaries won, but Schlafly expects the next primary, in South Carolina, to be telling of who the final candidate is. “(South Carolina) is the biggie,” Schlafly said. Nick Messenger, president of Undergraduate Student Government, said Santorum’s lack of success in New Hampsire was not a surprise to him. “(I didn’t) expect Rick Santorum to do very well (in New Hampshire), because most of his campaign strategy in Iowa hinged on him doing a traditional campaign of stumping,” Messenger said. “He doesn’t play in as well with fiscal conservatives.”

A fridge at Buckeye Express Convenience Store was full of cases of Four Loko Nov. 17, 2010.

Phusion Projects announced it would be removing the caffeine, taurine and guarana from their formula for the popular Four Loko beverages in November 2010, and just more than a year later the demand for a Four Loko has decreased locally. After a number of incidents that resulted in the hospitalization of numerous college students nationwide due to overconsumption of the high energy and alcohol levels contained in a 23.5 ounce can, the Food and Drug Administration required Four Loko and competitors to take the energy supplements out of the alcoholic beverage. PJ’s, a late-night sandwich shop and beer stop at 15 E. Frambes Ave., was one of the largest suppliers of Four Loko on campus during its popularity peak. Jen Wingate, an employee at PJ’s, said that when the original formula was being sold, they would have to restock the cooler of Four Loko’s about four to five times per night. When the announcement was made to pull the energy from the

drink, Wingate said PJ’s was at the top of the Four Loko market. “We stocked up on the original formula,” Wingate said. “Our supply held for about 6 months, we were one of the last places near campus to have them.” One student that The Lantern has chosen to keep anonymous, said he built his own supply of the original Four Lokos before they vanished. “I bought as many as I could while they were still available,” the student said. The student still has some of the original formula stashed away in a kitchen cabinet, and explained that a can of “the good stuff” is valuable on campus. He said that one can of Four Loko can turn quite a profit. “I made $12 off of one can before,” the student said. The caffeine-free version of Four Loko hasn’t been able to bring nearly as much business to PJ’s as its energy-packed predecessor. “Once we only had the energy-free version in stock, many customers turned to products such as Joose, which still had caffeine in it,” Wingate said. “That lasted as a substitute until we ran out of those, since Joose is no longer made at all.”

oller Reporter Sarah Stemen stemen.66@osu.edu

With every news media outlet in the nation covering the primary race to select the Republican presidential candidate, it is safe to say that America is anxious to see who will challenge President Barack Obama in the 2012 election. Living in Washington D.C. this past summer has completely exhausted me of this primary race. There were new headlines every day, if not every hour, following the candidates’ personal lives and campaign drama. Meanwhile, our current president was looking gray trying to decide what to do about the rising $15 trillion debt the U.S. has racked up since the 1990s. As much as I love to follow the elections, and I certainly have engaged in reading these headlines, I think it’s all too much, too fast. After interviewing political science professors from Ohio State, a lot of them have said “We don’t know, and we won’t for a while.” So as I certainly think the media should cover who wins the caucuses and it is important for America to know these things, breaking news stories

every hour, on the hour about he-said, she-said is just almost glazing America over to the reality that this person might be the next president of the United States. With Obama’s approval rating at 47 percent, there’s no doubt that this will be a closer race than people had anticipated less than a year ago. The Republican caucuses have been neck-and-neck and it’s great to see such political competitiveness. Former President George W. Bush had approval ratings of 55 percent in January in the year of his re-election, so that is an indicator that the race will be historic. But more and more, I hear opinions like “I don’t like any candidates,” and “they’re all bad people.” I think I would attribute some of these to the way the media outlets dig up everything on them. I’m not defending any candidates by any means, but does a person’s personal life have anything to do with how they would run a country? And yet, Americans base their opinions off of it. Americans should be well aware of the issues and what candidates think of them, and not base who they vote for, if they vote at all, off of what his or her ex-spouse did in the Bahamas last spring. I do hope that I am wrong, and all the campaign coverage and drama will fire Americans up to vote for the candidate that they’ve researched and believe can lead this country, but I strongly think that the media coverage is making Americans apathetic toward elections for 2012.

While giving a speech at the Columbus Metropolitan Club Wednesday, Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee had yet another slip of the tongue. During a question-and-answer portion of the event, Gee compared the task of coordinating 18 OSU divisions to that of coordinating the Polish Army, OSU spokeswoman Shelly Hoffman confirmed. Gee immediately realized his slip, saying he had done it again and would be raising money for the Polish Army, according to the Associated Press. Gee was at the Columbus Metropolitan Club as the featured speaker for an event called “The Innovative University: Resources and Aspirations.” He spoke about OSU’s ability to maintain a secure financial foundation and to further the university’s mission as a research institution. The comment was not the president’s first slip-up. At a March 8 press conference in which former OSU football coach Jim Tressel apologized for failing to report NCAA violations of which he was aware, a reporter asked Gee if any thought had been given to firing Tressel. Gee jokingly replied, “I’m just hopeful the coach doesn’t dismiss me.” At an April editorial board meeting with The Lantern, Gee said that he regretted making the sarcastic comment. “I sometimes need to extricate my foot from my mouth,” he said. “I admit that. But I have been that way for 30 years.” At the same meeting, Gee said planning OSU’s quarter-to-semester switch was “like planning the Normandy invasion … It’s a big damn deal.” In 2010, Gee received national criticism for likening some football programs’ competition to playing the Little Sisters of the Poor. “Well, I don’t know enough about the X’s and O’s of college football,” Gee said in an interview with the AP. “I do know, having been both a Southeastern Conference president and a Big Ten president, that it’s like murderer’s row every week for these schools. We do not play the Little Sisters of the Poor. We play very fine schools on any given day.” Gee did not immediately respond to The Lantern’s request for comment Wednesday.

When asked if InfraGard has ever been used to access college students records, data or communications for national security reasons, Shearer said no. “InfraGard is made up of individual citizens interested in protecting the nation’s critical infrastructure. It is not used for investigative activity,” Shearer said. John Young, founder of Cryptome.org, a website that releases financial and government information to the public, said that because of InfraGard’s private status, it is able to access information other public agencies cannot. “InfraGard is a quasi-information organization that does things the government cannot do,” Young said. Private groups are less regulated than government agencies, and Young said InfraGard is a combination of both. “The disclosure of student information disclosed to Ohio State or other institutions is not disclosed to the FBI,” Young said. “These organizations gather the classified data that the FBI cannot legally access.” Ron Reed, a member of the FBI’s Public Private Alliance Unit, said in an email that InfraGard’s

Redfern said Romney’s campaign has been driven by his experience in the corporate world as CEO of Bain Capital and his ability to create jobs, but inquiries by voters and the other Republican candidates have put question into Romney’s morals. PJ’s has seen an increase in sales of these and other alcoholic beverages as Four Loko sales decline. “We are seeing newer beverages take place of Four Lokos, because they taste much better and still carry the same alcohol content as a Loko,” Wingate said. He said most of the candidates are just making ridiculous comments and competing for attention in the debates. “There is this divide, and it’s very hard to deal with,” Messenger said. “It’s happened with the Democrats too very many times, and when it happens, traditionally the party that has that ideological divide or split of two candidates doesn’t do very well in the election.” Messenger added that this is an exciting moment in politics. He said it will be interesting to watch Romney try to present himself as an inherently progressive Republican yet still try to get the conservative vote. “I encourage students to pay attention to the primaries and the presidential election,” Messenger said. “Really pay attention and vote for our congressmen and senators if we want to get out of this gridlock.”

partnerships work by networking with InfraGard members from within critical infrastructure sectors. Reed wrote that InfraGard and the intelligence community are linked. He said there are currently about 43,000 individual members. Brian Moeller, an ex-InfraGard member who currently works as a senior system developer at OSU, said in an email that in 1996, the FBI realized they didn’t have all the knowledge necessary to protect the information infrastructure. Moeller wrote that InfraGard’s organization would be somehow protected by forming a partnership with the FBI and that in return, the FBI assisted InfraGard with knowledge regarding how U.S. law applies to cybercrime. While other groups are worried about transparency, one organization is concerned that InfraGard might be involved in spying. Mike Brickner, communications and public policy director for the American Civil Liberties Union said in a e-mail that InfraGard might be linked to spying. “The ACLU is concerned that InfraGard may be used by the FBI as a way to spy on average citizens,” Brickner said. “While there is certainly an interest in the government working with private businesses on specific cases where there is credible evidence of terrorist activity, InfraGard seems to work by having the private companies cast as wide a net as possible.” Brickner said there was a lack of transparency of how InfraGard works. “There is very little transparency or accountability, so the average citizen, government watchdogs and the media have very little knowledge about the inner workings of InfraGard and who has or has not been investigated,” Brickner wrote. Luis Bustamante, a graduate in medicine from OSU, said InfraGard should be transparent in its work with OSU. “(I) don’t like that OSU is part of this organization, especially because it’s a public university,” Bustamante said. “The tax-paying public should have more knowledge about InfraGard’s activities.”

believes the formula change completely ruined the Four Loko experience. “They definitely got you drunk before,” Davies said. “Now they just taste bad and don’t do anything.” Even critics of Four Loko have commented on the beverages value since its makeover. Max Yellstrom, a third-year in psychology, said he was more turned off by the product once they changed its contents. “Four Lokos were a big turn off before,” Yellstrom said. “The formula change completely changed my opinion. Midway on High Restaurant and Bar is scheduled to open Thursday, leaving some students sad to see Bento go, go. To students like Chelsea Stanley-Brown, a second-year in strategic communication, Bento Go Go, formerly located at 1728 N. High St., will be a bar missed around campus. “Bento was always a fun place to dance,” Stanley-Brown said. Other students said it had been awhile since they’d been to Bento, but that they had fond memories of the bar. “Freshman year after pre-gaming in the dorms we would always head over to Bento for a wild dance party,” said Nate Gulick, a third-year in marketing. “I haven’t been there since freshman year.” Manager Will Vodak, a former bartender at Fourth Street Patio Bar and Grill, the owners of which purchased the former Bento location, said he hopes the High Street location will bring the new bar success. “We are known up there for our service, prices and relaxed atmosphere, and we’re bringing that to High Street now,” he said. The current owner declined to disclose the price of the purchase, but the lot is currently valued at $880,000, according to the Franklin County Auditor’s website. Although Vodak hopes to keep the atmosphere the same, the food will be the biggest difference between the two bars. “The kitchen will be open to 2 a.m., giving a healthy side of the menu for people to enjoy and adding some American options as well,” Vodak said. Students said they go to Fourth Street-owned

Midway on High Restaurant and Bar, located at 1728 N. High St., is scheduled to open Jan. 12. operations because the company has a reputation on campus for providing a great mix of people. “Fourth is a laid-back atmosphere and the halfpriced drinks are nice,” Gulick said. “I’m in a frat so it’s a nice change of pace from The O Patio.” But as students have seen, the bar scene on High Street is always changing, so it’s important to give the students what they want in order to stay. “It’s important for a new bar to attract a popular crowd of students in order to take off,” Gulick said. The bar was given its name because it is located between South Campus Gateway and North Campus. Vodak said he anticipates a mixed crowd. “All people of campus life, similar to Fourth Street: the artsy people, your fraternity guys to athletes. Everyone is welcomed,” he said.

Midway on High hopes that by catering to more than one clientele, it will set it apart from other bars. “Downstairs will be a more hang-out spot,” he said. “Come with friends, get some drinks and eat some food and the much more party scene will be upstairs. One bar for everybody.” Midway on High will always be 21 and up and never have a dress code to help create a more relaxed atmosphere. “I want everyone to know we want people to feel comfortable coming here any given hour of any given day knowing they will have a great time and be surrounded by great people and great food,” Vodak said. C-Bus showcase looking for what’s next in electronic music Katie Harriman Lantern reporter harriman.14@osu.edu Though Columbus might not rank among great American music cities such as Nashville or Detroit, a movement has risen to push the Ohio capital to the forefront of the electronic scene. The first annual “What Next Ohio,” an electronic music showcase, is scheduled for Jan. 14 at Newport Music Hall. It features local acts Cassius Slay, Burgle, Hotmess, Dirty Current, Mike Textbeak, Funerals, Shin Tower Music, Dustin Knell and more. Conner Campassi, member of Dirty Current and Ohio State alumnus, said the diverse group of artists make the showcase different from any electronic music concert Columbus has seen. “A show this big with a lineup this diverse doesn’t happen very often,” Campassi said. “So it’s a really good opportunity to expose people to the underground scene of electronic music in Ohio.” Scotty Niemet, coordinator and promoter, said he was pleasantly surprised the Newport is hosting local artists, something that doesn’t happen very often. He said he hopes the proximity to campus will help expose students to electronic music. “Newport is in the heart of OSU,” Niemet said. “We’re saying, ‘Hey OSU, this is right here at your front door, we want you to come be a part of it.’” Niemet said the popularity of dance-based, mainstream music has blurred the genres of electronic and pop. He said he wants people to look past the label of electronic music because it is more varied than people think. “There are so many sub-genres; you have

dubstep, pseudo-rave music, but at the same time you have a band like Funerals, which is more mellow, or Shin Tower Music with live drums,” Niemet said. “There are just different aspects of it. We’re gonna throw everything out on the table, so people can pick and choose what they like.” Cassius Slay, who describes his music as “electronic with a Latin vibe,” said Columbus has

always had an underground dance music scene, but most OSU students don’t know about it. “Now that electronic music is becoming more popular, people are starting to realize that we’ve been here for a while,” Slay said. “This is our way to show Ohio State students what we’re doing here.” Slay, who has performed in Columbus for five years, said he thinks most students are into new music, but they look elsewhere to find it. “I feel like the college crowd is always finding these artists from around the country who are also in college, like Mac Miller or Mike Posner, but the same thing is happening here, and they should embrace it,” Slay said. Gilberto Covarrubias, a fourth-year in political science, said he is excited to see how OSU students will respond to the event. “The showcase is embracing the more experimental, progressive, forward-thinking styles of electronic music that don’t normally go into the larger venues,” Covarrubias said. “I want to see how students feel about it.” Covarrubias said he hopes the event will fuel smaller parties around Columbus and a wider knowledge of electronic music. “If you support local artists, it allows there to be a venue for it,” Covarrubias said. “It just adds to the culture.” Niemet said the artists are scheduled throughout the night based on the energy of their music. He said the bands playing earlier in the evening are more laid-back, but “by 1 o’clock it’s going to be a huge dance party.” The show is open to all ages. It runs from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tickets are $7-$10 at the door.

‘Shrek the Musical’ opened Jan. 10 at the Palace Theatre.

“True Life: I’m A Fairytale Creature” — it wouldn’t be surprising if this were the actual title of “Shrek The Musical.” The show is the story of a group of fairytale creatures who are banished to an ogre’s swamp. The musical’s plot follows the same as the first film. Shrek, the ogre, begins a quest to retrieve the deed for his swamp and get rid of the squatters. Along the way, he encounters a talking donkey who assists him in the rescue of Princess Fiona from a tower guarded by a dragon. True love ensues. The live-theater version of the story gives the audience a window into the thoughts and emotions of its characters in a way the film does not. Familiar characters from other fairytales make their appearance. The gingerbread man (Gingy), the Big Bad Wolf, Pinocchio and other seemingly minor roles have a chance to tell their variation of being ejected from Duloc, the fictional kingdom and setting for the show. The musical treads closely to the storyline of the first film, but it includes much more character depth than before. Shrek’s portrayal by Lukas Poost and Liz Shivener’s Princess Fiona do not stray much from the film’s

depiction of the two. Both characters seem to be much more vulnerable, especially singing songs like “When Words Fail” and “I Know It’s Today,” though Shrek’s ill-mannered nature lingers. The musical’s portrayal of some characters relies almost directly on their portrayal in the films. It is obvious that Andre Jordan is channeling Eddie Murphy for the role of Donkey, and he does a pretty great job adding a few twists of his own to the character. Many of the lines in the play are memorable quotes from the first film, such as “Shrek, I’m looking down!” “He huffed and he puffed and he signed an eviction notice,” and “Not my gumdrop buttons!” The show focuses on the premises of what it’s like to be lonely and what it’s like to be shunned for being different. Though the musical is still called Shrek, there is more to it than Shrek’s story of being hated and ostracized from society — an experience most of the cast is familiar with. One song carrying this theme is “Big Bright Beautiful World,” which describes the characters’ desires, appears multiple times for reprise. Following suit is “Freak Flag,” an anthem the troupe of fairytale creatures sings to Pinocchio. The song encourages him to embrace the puppet he is and to “let your freak flag fly.” “Shrek the Musical,” likewise, will have you ready to wave your freak flag high. Grade: B+

Progressive Field rink beckons old rivals aNDrEW HOLLEraN Senior Lantern reporter holleran.9@osu.edu

The Ohio State men’s ice hockey team has been looking forward to this weekend’s series against Michigan for months, and for one OSU player, years. The No.2-ranked Buckeyes host the No.15-ranked Wolverines in a two-game series starting Friday in Columbus. The next day, both teams will travel to Cleveland to play in the “Frozen Diamond Faceoff” on Sunday at Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians, where OSU will serve as the home team. “Everyone is super excited,” said OSU senior defenseman Sean Duddy. “It’s going to be a great weekend.” Sunday’s game will be the first outdoor collegiate hockey game played in Ohio. It will be the Buckeyes second game outside, as OSU faced Wisconsin in the “Frozen Tundra Classic” on Feb. 11, 2006 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisc. OSU lost, 4-2. Michigan played Michigan State last December in “The Big Chill at the Big House,” at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. The game set a world hockey record with an official attendance of 113,411. The Wolverines defeated the Spartans, 5-0. OSU coach Mark Osiecki said his players have been anticipating this weekend’s series, Sunday’s game in particular, since the “Frozen Diamond Faceoff” was scheduled in August.

OsU senior forward cory schneider battles for the puck during an Oct. 27, 2011, game against alaska at the schottenstein center. OsU tied alaska, 2-2, before winning, 2-1, in a shootout. “I think they’re pretty excited. We’re going to have to try to keep their emotions in check a bit,” Osiecki said. “They’re looking forward to it.” Duddy said he has been dreaming about playing in an outdoor hockey game of this stature since he was a kid. He is from Ann Arbor and was in attendance for the “Cold War,” the first-ever outdoor hockey game in North America, played between Michigan and Michigan State on Oct. 6, 2001, at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing. “It was an unbelievable experience,” Duddy said. “At the time I never thought (outdoor hockey) would

become such a regular thing. Now that it has, and I have the opportunity to play in one, it’s definitely a dream come true.” OSU senior goalie Cal Heeter agreed. “It’s a once in a lifetime experience to be able to play in front of 40,000 fans at a professional baseball stadium,” he said. While Sunday’s historic game is getting a lot of attention, both games have equal importance for the Buckeyes. Heeter said that right now, OSU is simply focused on Friday’s game. “We’ll take it one game at a time,”

he said. “For us right now, Friday’s the most important game. We’ll get to Sunday when it’s Sunday.” The two games count the same in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings, where both teams are fighting for a conference title. OSU, 14-4-3 this season, has a 10-3-3-1-conference record and currently has a seven-point lead in first place over second-place Notre Dame. Michigan, 12-8-4, 6-6-4-1 in the CCHA, is in seventh place and trails OSU by 11 points in the conference

The Red Men: OSU men’s hockey’s colorful supporting cast TYLEr rOBiNsON Senior Lantern reporter robinson.1063@osu.edu Sitting in the penalty box during a hockey game can be one of the loneliest places in the sports world. Save for if a fellow teammate commits a foul with or shortly after you, it’s just you and about 40 square feet of encasing glass. That is, unless you are an opponent of the Ohio State men’s ice hockey team. Since Nov. 11, a group of four OSU students, outfitted in red morph suits, greet penalized opponents with jeers, taunts and dances at Buckeye home games. They call themselves the OSU “Red Men.” “We sit behind the penalty box, usually on both sides, two on each side and we make fun of the (opposing) people in the penalty box, basically,” said Brian Gartner, a first-year in actuarial science. Gartner, along with fellow first-years James Meyer, Nick Strah and Connor Daugherty, based the idea of the “Red Men” off of the “Green Men,” a group of Vancouver Canucks super-fans who perform similar antics and gained national notoriety during the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Whether it’s heckling opposing players, taking pictures with kids or doing an “O-H-I-O” chant with the Block-O student section, the “Red Men” try their best to make their presence felt at games. “We just dance and try and make the atmosphere more fun,” Gartner said. Strah, who is in business, said that being behind a full-body suit makes it easier to let loose and act a little out of the ordinary. “Whenever we dance, I like it when people laugh at us because they think it’s funny … it’s like you’re a different person and you don’t really care,” he said. “It’s kind of funny because we kind of keep a disguise,” Gartner said. “Not many people around campus know the person in the suit.” The people in the suits are a group of friends that had never met before coming to college this autumn, but quickly developed a friendship from living on the same floor of their dormitory. They all admit that none of them were avid hockey fans prior to forming the “Red Men,” but that the group chose the sport out of a desire to find their own niche among the vast amounts of football and basketball fans around campus. “We just thought it would be really funny to make fun of the people in the penalty box and think of all these crazy ideas,” Gartner said. For example, the group brought bike locks to a November game against Northern Michigan, who at the time had five players facing a trial for alleged bike thefts. “We should have brought bike helmets too,” Gartner said. “It was ridiculous.”

THOMas BraDLEY / Campus editor

The masked ‘red Men’ pose together. The ‘red Men’ will be in attendance Jan. 15, when the OsU men’s hockey team plays Michigan at Progressive Field in cleveland, Ohio. Strah said that he has become a bigger fan of the sport ever since he began to don his red jumpsuit for games. “I’m starting to like (hockey) more now that we are doing this and actually going to games,” Strah said. Meyer, however, said it can sometimes be difficult to follow the game when looking through the suits. “It’s kind of hard to see the clear actions when you’re watching the game,” said Meyer, who is in pre-business. “It’s like you can see the guys skating in the general direction, but the farther you get away the more unclear it is. You can see people going in a general direction but not necessarily the puck all the time, so when they score, you can just see them the near the net.” “We cheer when everyone else cheers,” Strah said. The “Red Men” will be in attendance and cheering Sunday when the No. 2-ranked Buckeyes take

on No. 15 Michigan in the Frozen Diamond Faceoff at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio. Gartner said that there is a chance that the group might be featured on some of the Snow Days winter festival attractions inside the stadium, such as the sled hill that comes down from the bleachers of the stadium. While the “Red Men” vow to attend the remaining OSU home games, the group is unsure whether or not they will continue to do so in the coming years. Either way, they want to see the “Red Men” tradition upheld. “Whether it’s us or not, we would like to see it continue, to see it become something that sticks with the program and stays around,” said Daugherty, an exercise science education major. Gartner agreed. “It would be kind of cool to say you left Ohio State and you did that,” Gartner said. “Like you started that, you left your input and footprint.”

Buckeyes swept Michigan on Nov. 18 and Nov. 19 standings, but has won five of their last seven games. The Buckeyes swept Michigan on Nov. 18 and Nov. 19 in Ann Arbor, 2-1 and 6-5, respectively. The sweep was the first for OSU against the Wolverines on the road since 1986, and the first against Michigan in any arena since 1989 in a home-and-home series. The Michigan team OSU faced in November is

not the same team that the Buckeyes will be playing this weekend. Jon Merrill, a sophomore defenseman for the Wolverines, had to sit out November’s contests against OSU while serving a 22-game suspension for violating team rules. He will be back on the ice this weekend, and looks to be a major factor. Merrill was the 38th overall pick in the 2010 NHL entry draft by the New Jersey Devils. The sophomore made his CCHA debut on Jan. 9 against Lake Superior State and had two assists in a 4-2 Michigan victory. “He’s a world-class player,” Osiecki said. “He’s going to play a lot in the NHL.”

Even though Michigan is currently ranked 15th in the USCHO poll, and stand outside the top of the CCHA standings, Osiecki said he believes they are an elite team. “That team is a top-five team in the country, no doubt about it,” he said. The Buckeyes and Wolverines will drop the puck Friday in Columbus at 7:35 p.m. and face off again Sunday in Cleveland at 5:05 p.m.

OSU looks to boil up win against Purdue Patrick Maks Lantern reporter maks.1@osu.edu

Ohio State wrestling coach Tom Ryan and his team learned a lot about themselves this past weekend. After a road trip where the Buckeyes (7-2, 1-2) suffered back-to-back losses against Nebraska and Minnesota, Ryan said he feels that his team got a taste of what it’s like to wrestle away from home in the Big Ten. “We learned about the intensity that is required to win matches,” Ryan said. “We learned about the excitement in Big Ten wrestling.” But rather than dwelling on the first two setbacks of the season, Ryan said he sees it as a teachable moment. “I mean, at each weight class, you know, it was an opportunity to learn and get better, whether it’s single-leg defense, single-leg finishes, overall conditioning, (or) the mentality needed of constantly attacking your opponent,” he said. Still, that doesn’t mean Ryan is pleased with how his team wrestled this weekend “Across the board, in every weight class, I think I graded the team in each match, and we had one ‘A’ among the 20 matches that were wrestled. Most of them were ‘C’s’ and ‘D’s’ — it wasn’t a great weekend for us,” Ryan said. “We saw some people get exposed in areas that we didn’t think were an issue.” OSU will have a chance to rebound from its back-to-back losses against a Purdue team (6-5, 1-1 Big Ten) that has struggled as of late. The test against the Boilermakers, who lost their last duel to Illinois, 24-9, could offer an opportunity for a young OSU team with seven freshman starters to demonstrate their ability to handle adversity for the first time this season.

OSU freshman wrestler Hunter Stieber stares down his opponent against Virginia Tech. Stieber won, 7-6. Ryan said there are a couple of ways to do that. “You always keep it real with them,” he said. “You really try to paint a picture for them of what it’s going to be really like being a Big Ten wrestler going from a high school program to a Big Ten-caliber program.” Like Nebraska, Minnesota and much of the conference, Purdue, as a whole, will have more experience, top to bottom, than OSU has to offer. Ryan touched on the matter concerning Johnni Dijulius, a freshman, who lost to Minnesota’s Zach Sanders, the nation’s top-ranked 125-pount wrestler.

“He felt a fifth-year senior, bigger and stronger (with) more years of experience, a pace of wrestling that he’s never experienced,” Ryan said. Part of it, Ryan said, is getting the young guys to understand the difference in competition in the Big Ten versus what they might have seen at the high school level. “It’s clearly the best conference in the country, and many people with the credentials that our guys have come to the Big Ten,” Ryan said, “so every school’s loaded with these guys so now you’re competing against somebody at your caliber.” It’s pretty simple what OSU must do to be successful against Purdue, though, Ryan said. “We just got to get back on the attacking,” he said. “You know, the bottom line is wrestling our match, our style of wrestling, making sure these guys are trying to score points all the time. Make your opponent work in every position, whether you’re cutting him or you’re on top or bottom, whatever it is, make him work and build your lead, you know, attack more than your opponent.” Like this past weekend, OSU will face Purdue without redshirt junior C.J. Magrum, the 11th-ranked 184-pound wrestler in the country. Meanwhile, freshman Craig Thomas, who weighs 165 pounds, has filled the 184-pound starting spot the last two matches. “Whether we’re wrestling Iowa or Purdue or Oklahoma State, you simplify how you win wrestling matches and that is usually the guy that’s willing to give more,” Ryan said. “So, we got to be the guy that’s willing to give more, we didn’t wrestle that way this weekend in every weight class.” OSU wrestlers were not available for comment. OSU has won the past four meetings against Purdue, outscoring them 126 to 28. They’ll look to make it five in a row Thursday at 7 p.m. at home against Purdue at St. John Arena.
