Rick Santorum
Romney beats out Santorum, Paul in Iowa SARAH STEMEN AND THOMAS BRADLEY Oller reporter and Campus editor stemen.66@osu.edu and bradley.321@osu.edu

Mitt Romney officially won the Iowa aucuses by the slimmest of margins Wednesday morning, beating candidate Rick Santorum by a mere eight votes. This marked the closest result in the history of Republican presidential primaries and caucuses, according to multiple media sources. Both Romney and Santorum took about 25 percent of the votes in the caucuses, and Ron Paul, who finished in third, took about 21 percent of the vote. Jack Wright, a political science professor at Ohio

State, said the Iowa Caucus is a poor indication of who will win the Republican nomination. “Iowa caucuses have a tendency of last minute surges and Santorum certainly fits that mold,” Wright said. While Romney, Santorum and Paul finished ahead of the other hopeful Republican candidates, the results in Iowa might have affected other candidates just as much. Nathaniel Swigger, a professor of political science at OSU, said the burst from Santorum is what has basically pushed Michelle Bachmann and Rick Perry out of the race, and what could soon drive Newt Gingrich out. “It’s entirely possible that Santorum plays a role in the next few contests similar to Mike Huckabee in 2008,” Swigger said. “In the end he probably doesn’t
win the nomination, but he could certainly make things difficult for Romney, especially if he can pull off wins in South Carolina and Florida.” Wednesday, Bachmann officially announced that she was suspending her presidential campaign. Elliot Slotnick, a professor of political science at OSU, said that after the results were announced in Iowa, this was to be expected. “I wasn’t surprised when she dropped out,” Slotnick said. “All her eggs were in one basket and that basket was Iowa, so when she didn’t win, it was sort of a given.” Slotnick said Bachmann expected to do well in Iowa and was looking to the caucus to carry the rest of her campaign.

2 OSU students dead from NJ car accident CHELSEA SPEARS AND CHELSEA CASTLE Lantern reporter and Managing editor spears.116@osu.edu “I literally saw Ricky probably less than a week ago in my apartment, and now he is not here anymore,” said Chelsey Kovach, a fifth-year in strategic communication and women’s studies. “(He) was like the nicest guy ever, I don’t think anyone would have a bad thing to say about Ricky.” Ricky, a 21-year old Ohio State student whose given name is Ka-Hei Fok, was pronounced dead at the scene of a car accident Monday in Clinton Township, N.J. A second OSU student involved in the accident, 20-year-old Ho Kai Jeffrey Au Yeung, died around 6 p.m. Tuesday, said N.J. State Trooper Christopher Kay. Javaune Adams-Gaston, vice president for student life, released a statement Wednesday on behalf of the university. “The entire Ohio State community is deeply saddened by the recent passing of two of our students, as well as the injuries to three other,” Adams-Gaston wrote. “We extend our deepest sympathy to their families and friends during this difficult time. The accident’s impact is far-reaching,
and the university has many resources to support all students as well as families that have been directly affected.” Au Yeung was life-flighted to the Robert Woods Johnson Hospital in New Jersey. where he died one day after sustaining life threatening head injuries from the accident. Fok was not wearing a seatbelt, Kay said. Three other international OSU undergraduate students were also involved in the accident. Two females are listed in stable condition at local hospitals and the driver has been released from medical care. Both 19-year-old Xinyue Zhang from mainland China and 20-year-old Hennis Han Ling Tung from Malaysia are in stable condition. One is located at the Robert Woods Johnson Hospital and the other is staying at the Morristown Memorial Hospital.
Kovach is best friends and roommates with Ling Tung, who sustained a broken arm and head injuries from the accident. “(The doctors) said she’s probably not going to remember the accident at all,” Kovach said. “So she probably doesn’t even know what happened at this point.” The driver, 19-year-old Ho Wo Tam, was released from the hospital the day after the accident. He was listed in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries. All three male passengers were from Hong Kong, China, Kay said. Police suspect fatigue as the cause of the crash. Investigators believe the driver fell asleep around 4 p.m. on Interstate 78, where the 2012 Chevy Equinox was found crashed into a cluster of trees near the Pennsylvania border in Hunterdon County, N.J. The students were traveling back to Ohio for school after celebrating New Year’s Eve in New York City, Kovach said. The families of the involved passengers have been notified of the accident and police are still investigating the details of the crash. “I can’t believe it happened,” Kovach said. “I guess it just makes you realize how short life really is.”

Medicaid and education programs are in danger of facing cuts in order for Ohio to balance its budget after the rejection of statewide Issue 2, one Ohio State professor said. Because of budgetary limitations, Ohio government will now have to look to other programs and places to save money, because Gov. John Kasich was unable to pass the legislation known as Issue 2. Issue 2 was intended to alter public employees’ right to collectively bargain for wages and benefits so the government could effectively balance its budget. After Issue 2 was voted against in the November election, Kasich said the result was an indication that the voice of the people had been heard. “It is clear the people have spoken,” Kasich said in November. “I have heard their voices, I understand their decision, and frankly, I respect what people have to say.”
David Stebenne, OSU professor of law and history, told The Lantern that now Ohio’s Medicaid budget might face cuts. “The groups that don’t tend to have political power tend to be the poor and the programs that service them, unfortunately,” Stebenne said. “So the Medicaid budget is most likely going to shrink.” He said the problem with cutting Medicaid is that it is the single biggest thing in the state budget to be cut and is primarily a long-term care program. “In other words, it is a service for a lot of elderly individuals who are unable to pay for nursing home fees,” Stebenne said. “So it will be interesting to see if that gets cut, will these individuals need in-home care with a relative, or what will happen to them?” Stebenne said the Ohio legislature will not be able to do anything drastic concerning public employees, so other programs might experience the downfall. “If the government goes for public employees again, it will be a much more gradual, realistic approach,” Stebenne said.

campus Propane spill causes fire at Lane Avenue Residence Hall SARAH STEMEN Oller reporter stemen.66@osu.edu A sudden break in a hose connected to a propane tank was responsible for a fire at Lane Avenue Residence Hall on Ohio State’s campus Dec. 13. OSU officials told The Lantern while workers from the roofing contractor were working on the lower roof area on the north side of the building, one of the workers knocked over a propane tank, causing the hose connection to break at about 10 a.m. The contractor, K & W Roofing based in Pataskala, Ohio, did not answer calls from The Lantern. Scott Conlon, OSU project manager, described how the fire broke out. “This caused propane gas to spill across the roof and when the vapors came in
contact with the flame, a fire erupted,” he said. Conlon denied previous reports that a propane tank exploded on top of the roof. “Propane gas was spilled as I said,” Conlon said. “The tank did not explode.” No injuries were reported by any of the workers involved, he said. Students and staff of the residence hall were evacuated when OSU personnel pulled the fire alarm. “After Columbus Fire, OSU Emergency Management and Fire Prevention personnel and OSU Student Life personnel investigated and determined the fire to be out, there was no further risk to building occupants and everyone was allowed to return to their rooms and work areas,” Conlon said. The fire was extinguished before the Columbus Division of Fire arrived on site, according to the report. “One of the workers observing from ground level called 911,” Conlon said. “The
workers on the roof quickly grabbed their fire extinguishers that were on site and extinguished the fire prior to Columbus Fire Department arriving.” Conlon said the only damages, both longand short-term, were taken care of by the roofing contractor that day. “The contractor replaced the damaged section of the roof that day,” he said. Colon said the incident was of no cost to the university, because the contractor was responsible for the damage. “As the contractor was responsible for the damage, there was no cost to the university,” Conlon said. “The contractor made the repairs at their own cost.” Fire prevention specialist for OSU Fire Prevention, Chuck Scheerle, whose name was on the Columbus Fire Department incident report, did not respond to The Lantern’s voicemails and calls.

Santorum real front-runner GOP race on shaky ground

Santorum, 53, began his political career right out of college, working for various elected officials in Pennsylvania. In 1990, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Santorum was in the Pennsylvania public light until 2007, when he focused on his pursuit for the presidential office. Again, I can’t emphasize enough how little the Iowa Caucus means in the grand scheme of things. John McCain finished fourth in the 2008 Iowa Caucus, and he went on to win the nomination. Santorum is not a lock for the nomination, but neither are Romney and Paul. Santorum might have lost by eight votes in the Caucus, but ultimately he came out a winner.
Republican senator from Pennsylvania, Santorum’s stock in the 2012 presidential election rose. Mitt Romney has been in the Republican spotlight for many years, but, unless you are an avid follower of the primaries and debates, Santorum’s name is probably new. With the next step being New Hampshire, Santorum is going to look to take the momentum he gained from the Iowa Caucus and build on that. While the Iowa Caucus means next to nothing in the grand scheme of things, we did learn this: Santorum is a contender. Three months ago I would have said the Republican nomination was a race between Romney and Ron Paul, but it would appear the race has widened. I expect Romney to win New Hampshire as well, but if Santorum has similar results that he experienced in Iowa, he will probably be the front-runner in my mind.
Months of debates, TV advertisements and campaign stops all over the country have led up to the start of the 2012 presidential election season — and it started with a bang. But the bang was not the kind that the GOP might have wanted. Tuesday’s caucus in Iowa became a microcosm for the entire race for the Republican nomination for the presidency
thus far: a wild and fast ride down the highway in a car with several drivers tugging at the wheel. And that bang you heard, that was the tire going flat. Though many might have predicted Mitt Romney’s victory, the former Massachusetts governor hardly has anything to celebrate. Separated by just 15 votes from runner-up Rick Santorum, voters have shown once again that they want to try on every alternative to Romney, whose front-runner status has been challenged by no less than five other contenders throughout the race. Though candidates such as Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain and Rick Perry quickly saw their rising star extinguished under the suffocating scrutiny that bears down on any presidential frontrunner, the constant need for a candidate who is not Romney shows that Republicans at the polls still have major reservations
about the only contender who has held fast under the glaring light of the public throughout the race. Add a shaky base to the rumors of political conservatives such as Donald Trump considering entering the general election as independents, and it becomes clear that the GOP is facing a crisis of confidence that has left them scrambling for a unifying figure to face President Barack Obama in November. Competitive primaries are most certainly not guarantees of defeat in the general election — as Obama proved coming out of a hotly contested race against Hillary Clinton in the 2008 primaries — but Republicans already have a lot of work to do before election day. If they don’t manage to find one candidate on him they can pin their White House hopes, those dreams might wind up in a ditch just off the highway until 2016.

Local school districts might see some cuts. Doug Stern, an Ohio firefighter and avid protestor of Issue 2, said he believes Ohioans don’t want anything extreme. “I think what Issue 2 taught us is that the citizens of Ohio don’t want extremist policies or cuts,” he said. “They don’t want to see their neighbors affected, their friends.” Kathy Stewart, an account examiner for the State of Ohio architect’s office, said as long as the Ohio government is one-party, she doesn’t feel public employees are safe from cuts. “I think that we really have to pay attention who we’re voting for and what they stand for, and that will determine if public employees get attacked again,” Stewart said. “Because as far as I’m concerned, the one-party system is not working.”
Other areas like education, on a local and state level, might be affected as well, Stebenne said. “On the state level, we have higher education,” Stebenne said. “Can you keep raising the costs of Ohio State and places like it if the education budget continues to shrink? Or will the students and the parents or the voters rebel?” On the local level, Stebenne said many school districts will take hits. “If state spending on education will drop, will voters choose to pay more in taxes at the local level?” Stebenne said. “In the most recent election cycle, with the exception of affluent communities, voters answered that with no.” Stebenne said local school districts will be facing cuts now, more than ever. “Ohio is special because the budget was rebalanced all at once,” Stebenne said. “But the way they’ve rebalanced it is to basically pass along the cuts to local jurisdictions. And even though the state budget was balanced last spring and summer, the cutting is going on now.”

“I think she was riding on votes in Iowa, and when that didn’t happen, she sort of knew it was time,” Slotnick said. “It’s the state she grew up in and she is now representing a neighboring state, so she expected to do fairly well there.” Despite a poor showing in Iowa, Perry announced from his Twitter account that he would be staying in the race for the nomination. Swigger said the emergence of Santorum might have opened a small window of opportunity for candidate Jon Huntsman. “(Huntsman’s) only path to the nomination involves opponents who can weaken Romney. If Santorum can play that role, then Huntsman may be able to put himself forward as a kind of compromise candidate,” Swigger said. “He’s still a longshot, but he’s in a better position now than he was a week ago.” While the Republican campaign trails continue, and most move onto New Hampshire, incumbent candidate President Barack Obama spent the afternoon in Cleveland, Ohio.

Obama spoke at Shaker Heights High School on Wednesday to revive his efforts for boosting the economy. Although the speech was not a campaign for his reelection, it drew national attention. “Folks here in Ohio and across the country — you’re the reason why I ran for this office in the first place. And on days like today, you remind me what we’re still fighting for,” Obama said Wednesday. Many political analysts believe Ohio is a key state for either side in the 2012 presidential election. “I know you’re hearing a lot of promises from a lot of politicians lately,” Obama said. “But today, you’re only going to hear one from me. As long as I have the privilege of serving as your president, I promise to do everything I can, every day, to make this country a place where hard work and responsibility mean something.” Corrine McConnaughy, an assistant professor of political science at OSU, said despite surges from Santorum, Romney is still the front-runner. “Despite winning by only a handful of votes, it’s pretty clear that Romney is still the front-runner,” McConnaughy said. “I expect him to win more comfortably in New Hampshire.”

Team responds to Matta after Indiana loss Michael Periatt Asst. sports editor periatt.1@osu.edu
Ever since Thad Matta took over as coach for the Ohio State men’s basketball team, the program hasn’t been accustomed to losing. Over the past two seasons, the Buckeyes have compiled a 48-5 record with every loss coming against a ranked opponent. One of those five losses came Friday when OSU blew a double-digit lead and fell at Indiana. The loss didn’t sit well with the players and coaches, and conjured up some memories of the team’s Sweet 16 loss to Kentucky in last year’s NCAA tournament. Like the Kentucky loss, the game ended with a missed 3-pointer by William Buford that would have won the game. “We gave up that game against Indiana,” said sophomore forward Jared Sullinger. “Not taking anything away from Indiana, but there was a couple possessions when we watched film and realized that that’s not us.” Matta hopes his team uses the loss as a lesson for the rest of the season. “I think that nobody likes to lose more than we do,” Matta said. “It’s like I told our guys last year, I think we learned a great lesson in the Kentucky game, but the season was over. We have the ability to learn a lesson here at the end of December and continue to move forward.” Matta is known for being a players’ coach and doesn’t employ an aggressive coaching style. But according to the players, the Indiana loss particularly rubbed Matta the wrong way and he was a little more animated than normal in the following practices. “(Matta) wasn’t very polite,” Sullinger said. “But that’s what we needed. We needed someone to put a fire under us. After that tough loss it was only right that he had to do that.” Matta described Monday’s practice as

The Buckeyes are currently 14-2 in the 2011-12 season. “challenging” and “tough,” and said he really harped on the focus of the team. “We’ve probably practiced this team harder than most teams we’ve had,” Matta said. “A lot of that has to do with the youthfulness and immaturity of the team and not quite understanding the level they must compete at. One of the messages yesterday was competing and a mindset carries over to the game. There was a couple moments where I had to refocus them a couple times, but for the most part I thought they did a pretty good job.” The team responded Tuesday, beating a battered Nebraska team, 71-40, at the Schottenstein Center. The Buckeyes committed 19 turnovers against the Cornhuskers, but Matta said that he felt his players felt they came out ready to play on Tuesday
night. “Last week at Indiana we was careless with the ball and we didn’t value every possession,” Buford said. “For the most part I think we did that today.” With the win against Nebraska, OSU raised its record to 14-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten conference. At about the midpoint in the season, the team made it clear that while the team wasn’t going to dwell on the loss, they weren’t going to forget it. “It was a life lesson as far as the game period,” Sullinger said. “We gave up 17 layups against Indiana. They got whatever shot they wanted in the second half. As you can see, we turned up our defensive intensity in this game. We were just ready to play basketball.”

Origins of social media fiasco unknown Pat Brennan Sports editor brennan.164@osu.edu Members of the Ohio State football team began their first day under new coach Urban Meyer Tuesday in a cloud of social media confusion, and it still hasn’t been sorted out. After a 7 a.m. Tuesday meeting with Meyer, several OSU football players tweeted that they were told they were banned from Twitter, a social media platform. Players backtracked and said there was no ban just hours later, but the origin of the supposed ban remains unclear. From his account, @FRAGEL88,
junior tight end Reid Fragel tweeted around noon Tuesday, saying: “New staff new rules. No more twitter, not a big deal and probably for the better. Love our fans, love this place. Go Bucks #2012.” By about 4:45 p.m., Fragel issued the following tweet: “Just now finding out the whole twitter thing wasn’t exactly true. #hearsay.” OSU athletics representative Jerry Emig, who was present at the football team’s Tuesday meeting, told The Lantern that Meyer never informed him of a Twitter ban for the players. “All I know was I was not made aware of a ban,” Emig told The Lantern in a Wednesday email. “I have no idea where this all originated or how it originated.”
David A. Goldberger, professor emeritus of law at OSU’s Moritz College of Law, said Tuesday that a complete ban of Twitter, or another social media platform, would be unlawful. “I have my doubt about this, but there may be topics that the coach can put out of bounds, but to say that you can’t use a social media is far too broad,” Goldberger said. “It’s like saying you can’t talk.” From his Twitter account, @king_ hyde33, OSU sophomore running back Carlos Hyde said Tuesday: “Well guess its been real twitter ima miss all my followers.” Later that day, Hyde tweeted: “Coach didn’t tell us this morning that twitter is banned guess the
media likes to make up things. #GoBucks!” In an Oct. 26 email to The Lantern, OSU athletics spokesman Dan Wallenberg said not every OSU team institutes formal policies on social media use. “Each (OSU) team, if it has a policy, handles on its own,” Wallenberg said. Wallenberg also confirmed that the OSU men’s basketball team does not have a formal policy. Players, including junior tight end Jake Stoneburner, wasted little time returning to their accounts. From his account, @ STONEYeleven, Stoneburner said Wednesday at around 3 p.m.: “Can’t wait to get going in this new offense!”
No. 6-ranked OSU men’s basketball’s defense denies Cornhuskers offense Andrew Holleran Senior Lantern reporter holleran.9@osu.edu Coming into Monday night’s game against Nebraska, the Ohio State men’s basketball team had limited opponents to 50 points or fewer seven times this season. The Buckeyes accomplished the feat for the eighth time Tuesday, thanks in part to a dominant effort on the defensive end by the Buckeyes in their 71-40 victory. No. 6 OSU improved to 14-2, 2-1 in Big Ten play. Nebraska lost their third-straight Big Ten game and fell to 8-6, 0-3 in the Big Ten. Sophomore forward Jared Sullinger, who scored 19 points and added 12 rebounds in the win, said the Buckeyes were only concerned with their play when Nebraska had the ball. “We weren’t worried about the offensive end, we were just worried about the defensive end,” Sullinger said. OSU’s defensive effort began following the opening tip, which Nebraska won. The Buckeyes forced a shot-clock violation on Nebraska’s opening possession, and would continue to pressure the Cornhuskers for the remainder of the first half. OSU held the Cornhuskers to 20 points and forced 10 turnovers in the first half. Nebraska shot a mere 8-24 from the field, including 1-9 from 3-point range during the first 20 minutes. Thad Matta said intensity was the key for the Buckeyes defensively. “We felt like being where we needed to be and

putting pressure on the ball was gonna be big for us,” he said. OSU’s defensive pressure gave Nebraska fits all game long. The Cornhuskers shot 16-52 from the field. Nebraska had more turnovers (17) than they did shots made (16). Six different Buckeyes had at least one steal, including three by sophomore guard Aaron Craft, who also added four points and four assists. Bo Spencer, Nebraska’s leading scorer, was held to 5-15 shooting, 0-5 from 3-point range. “We knew Spencer is a guy that can go crazy if you let him go in a game,” Matta said. “Getting guys to slow him down — which I thought we did well.” But the end of the first half, with OSU leading, 44-20, the Buckeyes’ already had enough offense to eventually secure the win. On a night where OSU was a bit careless with the ball — the Buckeyes turned the ball over 19 times — strong defensive play was key. “We was pretty careless with the ball. Defense was the key to winning the game,” said senior guard William Buford, who scored 13 points and added five rebounds and four assists. The Buckeyes did against the Cornhuskers what they weren’t able to do in their two losses this season. In OSU’s two losses this season, the team allowed a combined 152 points. Its opponent also shot 52 percent from the field. “We gave up 17 layups against Indiana,” Sullinger said. “We turned up our defensive intensity (tonight).” The Buckeyes will next take the floor again Saturday at Iowa. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.

everBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla., hours before the 2012 Gator Bowl between oSU and Florida began. The Gators defeated the Buckeyes, 24-17, before a crowd of 61,312. oSU sold 7,500 tickets for the game.
EverBank Field: To visit, or not to visit PAT BrennAn Sports editor brennan.164@osu.edu JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — It wasn’t the rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., and it wasn’t the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, La., but the EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla., site of the 2012 Gator Bowl, was the best bowl game location Ohio State football could do this season. The stadium, home of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, holds more than 77,000 fans and was home of Super Bowl XXXIX between the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles. The mostly-full stadium held 61,312 fans for Monday’s Gator Bowl, and The Lantern was there to cover the game, and rate the quality of the venue. Here is our rating of EverBank Field, should Buckeyes, Browns or Bengals fans find themselves there in the future. All categories were rated on a five-point scale, with a five being the highest. Sight lines/seating: One of the most important factors when shelling out big bucks for an NFL game or a college football bowl game is your proximity
to the field and the sight lines. Luckily for those in attendance for Monday’s Gator Bowl, the Buckeyes’ and Gators’ sideline areas were narrow. The front row of seats was quite close to the playing surface. The stadium was not particularly tall, and the higher the row you sat in, the farther you were from the action, kind of like the rose Bowl. Upper deck seats might not have been the best vantage point, but the expansive lower bowl would be well worth the price of admission. Lantern rating: 2 Access to stadium/location: Though the stadium wasn’t at full capacity, traffic to the game was manageable — a 15-minute cab ride from downtown Jacksonville. Public transit is an option, as is an elevated, light-rail train that runs right past the stadium. Very convenient. The stadium location is also quite nice. The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville, home of the Double-A affiliate of Major League Baseball’s Miami Marlins, is a beautiful, red-brick ball field adjacent to EverBank Field. Lastly, and perhaps best of all, the stadium is located on the banks of the St. Johns river, which makes for a picturesque scene. Lantern rating: 4
Aesthetics of the stadium: EverBank Field is comprised mostly of large concrete ramps that run up to the upper levels of the stadium. It isn’t very colorful or particularly eye-grabbing. The open-air facility was very open indeed, and probably not conducive to allowing crowd noise to reverberate and bother the team you’re rooting against. Lantern rating: 1 Gameday atmosphere: There was a large tailgate party situated on a lawn outside of the stadium. Hundreds of fans attended, ate, drank and watched college football on a jumbo-sized television screen. The cost of admission to the tailgate was $10, but your “ticket” to enter was the official Gator Bowl patch — worn by both teams during the game — attached to a lanyard. The patch was a fine souvenir and the tailgate grounds gave fans the opportunity to meet and get pumped for the game. Lantern rating: 4.5 To visit or not to visit: All categories considered, EverBank Field garnered a 2.875. A trip to EverBank Field, which was built in 1995, could be justified for a college football bowl game. A trip to see the Jaguars, which finished the 2011 season with a 5-11 record, though? Probably not.

As students adjust to their schedules and settle back into college life, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra is busy readying itself for its first performance of the new year. Continuing its 61st season, CSO hopes to keep the momentum going after a successful 2011. The orchestra will hold its first program of 2012 at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Ohio Theater. The performances will explore the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and German composer and pianist Johannes Brahms. Conductor Matthias Bamert will lead the orchestra through sets including Mozart’s “Symphony No. 25 in G Minor,” “Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major” and Brahms-Schoenberg’s “Piano Quartet in G Minor.” Having previously served as resident conductor at the Cleveland Orchestra, Bamert is no stranger to Ohio. He has released more than 80 discs and has held many prestigious roles, including music director for the London Mozart Players and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Steven Wedell, full-time violist for CSO and lecturer at the Ohio State School of Music, said having a guest conductor is a great experience. “It gives us a new way of looking at things and it is fun for us,” Wedell said. “It’s an instant opportunity. We hope he will go back to his home city and tell them how great we were and he hopes we will do the same.” Featured in Mozart’s Violin Concerto will be Belgium-born violinist Yossif Ivanov. Only 23 years old, Ivanov has already built an impressive resume. At 16, he received First Prize at the Montreal International Music Competition. Two years later, he received Second Prize and Public Prize at the Queen Elizabeth Competition in Brussels. He currently serves as the youngest violin teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. The Stradivarius Society of Chicago lent Ivanov the 1699 “Lady Tennant” Stradivarius Violin. In 2005, the violin was purchased for more than $2 million at auction. WOSU’s Christopher Purdy will hold a free lecture about the program for all ticket holders at 7 p.m. Ticket prices range from $24.75-$68 and are available at the Ohio Theater Ticket Office and all Ticketmaster locations. Discount tickets are available for students with a valid BuckID for $13.

Taylor Swift has reportedly been offered the role of Eponine in the film adaptation of ‘Les Miserables.’
Director Tom Hooper must have been dropped on his head. When multiple media outlets reported Wednesday that Taylor Swift had beaten out Broadway veteran and “Glee” star Lea Michele for the role of Eponine in Hooper’s film version of the classic musical “Les Miserables,” fans of the show were outraged. While it’s hard to argue with Swift’s star power, she by no means has the Broadway-caliber voice necessary for the role. Michele, on the other hand, undoubtedly has the acting and vocal chops to take the role to a new level on the big screen. Swift, who also reportedly beat out Scarlett Johansson and Evan Rachel Wood for the part, will certainly bring with her many fans who would not have seen the movie otherwise. But Michele is a big enough star in her own right to have starred in a movie whose cast list already includes several other A-list actors. Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway will also star in the film. A role in “Valentine’s Day” and a slew of music videos hardly give Swift the acting experience needed for the role, while

Monster Jam 7:30 p.m. @ Nationwide Arena Josh Blue 8 p.m. @ Funny Bone
Michele has experience both onstage and onscreen. In fact, Michele began her acting career in the role of “Young Cosette” in the Broadway version of “Les Mis.” Wood, likewise, has proven herself, both vocally and actingwise. Her movie credits include “Across the Universe,” in which she sang beautifully, and critic darling “Thirteen.” What was Hooper thinking? Perhaps it was Swift’s likability or her large fan base that had Hooper hooked. Perhaps it was the probability that attaching Swift’s name to the film will help rake in big bucks. But whatever
led Hooper to this casting decision might very well lead to an uprising by musical theater fans, and as a result, perhaps the loss of a large group of the film’s targeted audience. Hooper undoubtedly was counting on long-time fans of the play to see the film, but his casting decision might turn off more fans than he expects. Even some of Swift’s fans are ripping the decision. One woman, Long Islander Katie Kendrick, who called herself both a fan of Swift and “Les Mis,” told MTV that while she loves Swift’s music, she’s not sure Swift has the experience or the talent needed for the role. To be sure, millions of Swift’s most loyal followers will most likely flock to the theater and the film will probably do well at the box office. But that doesn’t mean the film will do “Les Mis” justice. The English translation of “Les Miserables” is “the miserable ones.” While the title was not intended to refer to audience members, musical theater fans who see Swift’s performance in the well-loved role might soon have to count themselves among that group.

Bianca Briggs Lantern reporter briggs.243@osu.edu Bookcases are for books. Folders are for documents. But archives house more than that — they are home to pieces of history. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Ohio Historical Society has arranged two behind-the-scenes tours of the archives and two of the museum’s artifact storage facilities. The celebration began in April and will continue through 2015. The upcoming tours of the archives will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and Feb. 25 and the artifact
storage facilities tour will be at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 19 at the Ohio Historical Center. These tours will allow participants to explore the archives and artifact storage facilities with curators. They will be able to see artifacts that have not been on display and touch objects from the Civil War collections. Jason Crabill, curatorial services manager of the museum and library services division, said the archives are about providing access to the information they hold to the public. “Just because stuff is not on display does not mean it’s not historically significant,” Crabill said. The Ohio Historical Center has a strong collection of Civil War artifacts, Crabill said. The collections
facility of the Ohio Historical Society contains more than 2 million artifacts. Three floors of the building are archival material. Shayla Martin, a first-year in athletic training, said she likes the idea of touring the archives. “I’d definitely be interested in it,” Martin said. “I drive past it (the Ohio Historical Center) all the time, but I’ve never been there.” The cost for the archives tour is $99 and the collections museum tour is $149. Both collections can be toured for $209. For ticketing information and registration, contact the Ohio Historical Society at 1-800-686-1541.

Christian Bale’s Batman (left) and Tom Hardy’s Bane (right) will appear in the third Batman film in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ scheduled to be released in standard theaters and IMAX July 20.
The Lantern editors weigh in on ‘The Dark Knight Rises’: Will it meet expectations?
ALEX ANTONETZ antonetz.3@osu.edu But it’s not. And he’s wise not to make it so. If Nolan were looking to try to up the ante from “The Dark Knight,” he likely would have utilized Riddler, arguably the second-highest-profile villain in the Batman universe. Instead, he chose Bane, who’s recognizable in his own right, but certainly not in the same caliber as Joker. Even without Riddler or Joker, people shouldn’t expect less from “Rises.” Just because the
film might not feature an iconic, over-the-top villain doesn’t mean it can’t be great in its own right. Other franchises have gone on to produce follow-ups just as good, if not better, than entries perceived as “great.” Look at James Bond. The series has endured for 50 years now, and Daniel Craig’s “Casino Royale” is regarded by many as one of the finest films in the series, comparing favorably to the Sean Connery-era flicks. What’s to say “Rises” can’t do that as well, and that Hathaway and Hardy can’t live up to Ledger? The first theatrical trailer for the film and a six-minute prologue was released in December. With exploding football fields and mid-air heists, the scale on “Rises” looks bigger than ever, and that, along with Hathaway’s sultry take on Catwoman and Bane’s creepy confidence, make me think “Rises” has enough going for it to at least become “The Dark Knight’s” equal.
Though I am not one to admit it in public, I have a deep, dark love for movies and video games that bring my favorite comic book superheroes to life. I am an avid consumer of all things X-Men, Batman, Spiderman and just about any other tights-wearing vigilante. Predictably, my satisfaction with “The Dark Knight” could only be measured in the decibel level of my girlish squeals as I left the theater. “The Dark Knight” is arguably the apex of the comic book movie era — the trump card for all previous attempts at bringing these characters from the pages to the masses. It goes without saying that I immediately thirsted for director Christopher Nolan’s sequel to the most epic comic bookrelated event of my life, but in the more than three years that have passed since his superhero masterpiece, I’m more worried that lightning won’t strike twice.

A lot of folks don’t think Christopher Nolan’s next Batman film, “The Dark Knight Rises” can top its predecessor, “The Dark Knight.” That, my friends, is unfair to expect. The third and final film in Nolan’s Batman trilogy features Christian Bale’s Batman, of course, but also Bane (Tom Hardy), Catwoman (Anne Hathaway), and rumored appearances from Ra’s al Ghul, who was featured in “Batman Begins,” his daughter, Talia, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a cop. All that aside, it doesn’t feature Batman’s most famous arch-nemesis, Joker. Heath Ledger’s take on Joker in “The Dark Knight” has become a cultural staple. His involvement in the film undoubtedly helped it rake in north of $1 billion at the box office, whether it be because of his performance or his untimely death earlier in the year. Of course, it would be hard to top that if that’s what Nolan’s prerogative was.
Granted, there is no one better than Nolan to guide this franchise to its conclusion. He has proven himself worthy of resurrecting Gotham and all of its monsters against which a hard-edged Batman must struggle, but Nolan might have played his best hand a movie too soon. “The Dark Knight Rises,” Nolan’s concluding entry in the trilogy, features Bane as the
primary antagonist. Though this incarnation of Bane appears significantly more well-served than his disastrous feature in Joel Schumacher’s “Batman & Robin,” I know no villain from the darkest corners of the DC Universe could come near matching the realism and utter insanity with which Heath Ledger delivered his role as Joker. And unfortunately, his is the bar against which anyone will measure Tom Hardy’s Bane. Since Batman seems to be only as good as the evil he is fighting to stop — and with little help expected from Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman — I have already talked myself down from any hope of a greater or even comparable effort from “Rises.” I have no doubt it will be a fantastic movie, but I can’t shake the feeling that asking for a higher-quality follow-up to “The Dark Knight” is a bit like wishing for a miracle.
